Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is a detector array comprised by 988 5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm$\times$5$\;$cm TeO$_2$ crystals held below 20 mK, primarily searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{130}$Te. Unprecedented in size amongst cryogenic calorimetric experiments, CUORE provides a promising setting for the study of exotic through-going particles. Using the first tonne-year of CUORE's exposure, we perform a search for hypothesized fractionally charged particles (FCPs), which are well-motivated by various Standard Model extensions and would have suppressed interactions with matter. No excess of FCP candidate tracks is observed over background, setting leading limits on the underground FCP flux with charges between $e/24-e/5$ at 90\% confidence level. Using the low background environment and segmented geometry of CUORE, we establish the sensitivity of tonne-scale sub-Kelvin detectors to diverse signatures of new physics., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We present the model we developed to reconstruct the CUORE radioactive background based on the analysis of an experimental exposure of 1038.4 kg yr. The data reconstruction relies on a simultaneous Bayesian fit applied to energy spectra over a broad energy range. The high granularity of the CUORE detector, together with the large exposure and extended stable operations, allow for an in-depth exploration of both spatial and time dependence of backgrounds. We achieve high sensitivity to both bulk and surface activities of the materials of the setup, detecting levels as low as 10 nBq kg$^{-1}$ and 0.1 nBq cm$^{-2}$, respectively. We compare the contamination levels we extract from the background model with prior radio-assay data, which informs future background risk mitigation strategies. The results of this background model play a crucial role in constructing the background budget for the CUPID experiment as it will exploit the same CUORE infrastructure.

Abstract: The current experiments searching for neutrinoless double-$\beta$ ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay also collect large statistics of Standard Model allowed two-neutrino double-$\beta$ ($2\nu\beta\beta$) decay events. These can be used to search for Beyond Standard Model (BSM) physics via $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay spectral distortions. $^{100}$Mo has a natural advantage due to its relatively short half-life, allowing higher $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay statistics at equal exposures compared to the other isotopes. We demonstrate the potential of the dual read-out bolometric technique exploiting a $^{100}$Mo exposure of 1.47 kg $\times$ y, acquired in the CUPID-Mo experiment at the Modane underground laboratory (France). We set limits on $0\nu\beta\beta$ decays with the emission of one or more Majorons, on $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay with Lorentz violation, and $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay with a sterile neutrino emission. In this analysis, we investigate the systematic uncertainty induced by modeling the $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay spectral shape parameterized through an improved model, an effect never considered before. This work motivates searches for BSM processes in the upcoming CUPID experiment, which will collect the largest amount of $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay events among the next-generation experiments.

Abstract: The matter-antimatter asymmetry underlines the incompleteness of the current understanding of particle physics. Neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu \beta\beta$) decay may help explain this asymmetry, while unveiling the Majorana nature of the neutrino. The CUORE experiment searches for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te using a tonne-scale cryogenic calorimeter operated at milli-kelvin temperatures. We report no evidence for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay and place a lower limit on the half-life of T$_{1/2}$ $>$ 3.8 $\times$ 10$^{25}$ years (90% C.I.) with over 2 tonne$\cdot$year TeO$_2$ exposure. The tools and techniques developed for this result and the 5 year stable operation of nearly 1000 detectors demonstrate the infrastructure for a next-generation experiment capable of searching for $0\nu \beta\beta$ decay across multiple isotopes.

Abstract: Neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) is a yet unobserved nuclear process which would demonstrate Lepton Number violation, a clear evidence of beyond Standard Model physics. The process two neutrino double beta decay ($2\nu\beta\beta)$ is allowed by the Standard Model and has been measured in numerous experiments. In this letter, we report a measurement of $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru of $(7.07~\pm~0.02~\text{(stat.)}~\pm~0.11~\text{(syst.)})~\times~10^{18}$~yr by the CUPID-Mo experiment. With a relative precision of $\pm~1.6$ \% this is the most precise measurement to date of a $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay rate in $^{100}$Mo. In addition, we constrain higher-order corrections to the spectral shape which provides complementary nuclear structure information. We report a novel measurement of the shape factor $\xi_{3,1}=0.45~\pm 0.03~\text{(stat.)} \ \pm 0.05 \ \text{(syst.)}$, which is compared to theoretical predictions for different nuclear models. Abstract: We report on the results obtained with the global CUPID-0 background model, which combines the data collected in the two measurement campaigns for a total exposure of 16.6 kg$\times$yr. We identify with improved precision the background sources in the region of interest for neutrinoless double $\beta$-decay, making more solid the foundations for the background budget of the next-generation CUPID experiment. Relying on the excellent data reconstruction, we measure the two-neutrino double $\beta$-decay half-life of $^{82}$Se with unprecedented accuracy: $T_{1/2}^{2\nu} = [8.69 \pm 0.05 \textrm{(stat.)}~^{+0.09}_{-0.06} \textrm{(syst.)}] \times 10^{19}~\textrm{yr}$.

Abstract: CUPID-Mo, located in the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France), was a demonstrator for the next generation $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay experiment, CUPID. It consisted of an array of 20 enriched Li$_{2}$$ ^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometers and 20 Ge light detectors and has demonstrated that the technology of scintillating bolometers with particle identification capabilities is mature. Furthermore, CUPID-Mo can inform and validate the background prediction for CUPID. In this paper, we present a detailed model of the CUPID-Mo backgrounds. This model is able to describe well the features of the experimental data and enables studies of the $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay and other processes with high precision. We also measure the radio-purity of the Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals which are found to be sufficient for the CUPID goals. Finally, we also obtain a background index in the region of interest of 3.7$^{+0.9}_{-0.8}$(stat)$^{+1.5}_{-0.7}$(syst)$\times10^{-3}$counts/$\Delta$E$_{FWHM}$/mol$_{iso}$/yr, the lowest in a bolometric $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay experiment.

It will operate at $\sim$10 mK in a cryostat currently hosting a similar-scale bolometric array for the CUORE experiment at the Gran Sasso National Laboratory (Italy). CUPID will be based on large-volume scintillating bolometers consisting of $^{100}$Mo-enriched Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crystals, facing thin Ge-wafer-based bolometric light detectors. In the CUPID design, the detector structure is novel and needs to be validated. In particular, the CUORE cryostat presents a high level of mechanical vibrations due to the use of pulse tubes and the effect of vibrations on the detector performance must be investigated. In this paper we report the first test of the CUPID-design bolometric light detectors with NTD-Ge sensors in a dilution refrigerator equipped with a pulse tube in an above-ground lab. Light detectors are characterized in terms of sensitivity, energy resolution, pulse time constants, and noise power spectrum. Despite the challenging noisy environment due to pulse-tube-induced vibrations, we demonstrate that all the four tested light detectors comply with the CUPID goal in terms of intrinsic energy resolution of 100 eV RMS baseline noise. Indeed, we have measured 70--90 eV RMS for the four devices, which show an excellent reproducibility. We have also obtained outstanding energy resolutions at the 356 keV line from a $^{133}$Ba source with one light detector achieving 0.71(5) keV FWHM, which is -- to our knowledge -- the best ever obtained when compared to $\gamma$ detectors of any technology in this energy range., Comment: Prepared for submission to JINST; 16 pages, 7 figures, and 1 table

Abstract: An array of twelve 0.28 kg lithium molybdate (LMO) low-temperature bolometers equipped with 16 bolometric Ge light detectors, aiming at optimization of detector structure for CROSS and CUPID double-beta decay experiments, was constructed and tested in a low-background pulse-tube-based cryostat at the Canfranc underground laboratory in Spain. Performance of the scintillating bolometers was studied depending on the size of phonon NTD-Ge sensors glued to both LMO and Ge absorbers, shape of the Ge light detectors (circular vs. square, from two suppliers), in different light collection conditions (with and without reflector, with aluminum coated LMO crystal surface). Abstract: Radioactivity was recently discovered as a source of decoherence and correlated errors for the real-world implementation of superconducting quantum processors. In this work, we measure levels of radioactivity present in a typical laboratory environment (from muons, neutrons, and gamma's emitted by naturally occurring radioactive isotopes) and in the most commonly used materials for the assembly and operation of state-of-the-art superconducting qubits. We develop a GEANT-4 based simulation to predict the rate of impacts and the amount of energy released in a qubit chip from each of the mentioned sources. We finally propose mitigation strategies for the operation of next-generation qubits in a radio-pure environment.

Abstract: We present the first search for the Majoron-emitting modes of the neutrinoless double $\beta$ decay ($0\nu\beta\beta\chi_0$) using scintillating cryogenic calorimeters. We analysed the CUPID-0 Phase I data using a Bayesian approach to reconstruct the background sources activities, and evaluate the potential contribution of the $^{82}$Se $0\nu\beta\beta\chi_0$. We considered several possible theoretical models which predict the existence of a Majoron-like boson coupling to the neutrino. The energy spectra arising from the emission of such bosons in the neutrinoless double $\beta$ decay have spectral indices $n=$ 1, 2, 3 or 7. We found no evidence of any of these decay modes, setting a lower limit (90% of credibility interval) on the half-life of 1.2 $\times$ 10$^{23}$ yr in the case of $n=$ 1, 3.8 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ yr for $n=$ 2, 1.4 $\times$ 10$^{22}$ yr for $n=$ 3 and 2.2 $\times$ 10$^{21}$ yr for $n=$ 7. These are the best limits on the $0\nu\beta\beta\chi_0$ half-life of the $^{82}$Se, and demonstrate the potentiality of the CUPID-0 technology in this field.

Abstract: The CUPID-Mo experiment, located at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France), was a demonstrator experiment for CUPID. It consisted of an array of 20 Li$_2^{100}$MoO$_4$ (LMO) calorimeters each equipped with a Ge light detector (LD) for particle identification. In this work, we present the result of a search for two-neutrino and neutrinoless double beta decays of $^{100}$Mo to the first 0$^+$ and $2^+$ excited states of $^{100}$Ru using the full CUPID-Mo exposure (2.71 kg$\times$yr of LMO). We measure the half-life of $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay to the $0^{+}_1$ state as $T_{1/2}^{2\nu \rightarrow 0_1^+}=7.5\pm 0.8 \ \text{(stat.)} \ ^{+ 0.4}_{-0.3} \ \text{(syst.)} )\times 10^{20} \ \mathrm{yr}$. The bolometric technique enables measurement of the electron energies as well as the gamma rays from nuclear de-excitation and this allows us to set new limits on the two-neutrino decay to the $2_1^+$ state of $T^{2\nu \rightarrow 2_1^+}_{1/2}>4.4\times 10^{21} \ \mathrm{yr} \ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$ and on the neutrinoless modes of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu\rightarrow 2_1^+}>2.1\times10^{23} \ \mathrm{yr}\ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$, $T_{1/2}^{0\nu\rightarrow 0_1^+}>1.2\times10^{23} \ \mathrm{yr}\ \text{(90 % c.i.)}$. Information on the electrons spectral shape is obtained which allows us to make the first comparison of the single state (SSD) and higher state (HSD) $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay models for the $0_1^+$ excited state of $^{100}$Ru., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures

Abstract: CUPID-0, an array of Zn$^{82}$Se cryogenic calorimeters, was the first medium-scale demonstrator of the scintillating bolometers technology. The first project phase (March 2017 - December 2018) allowed the most stringent limit on the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of the isotope of interest, $^{82}$Se, to be set. After a six months long detector upgrade, CUPID-0 began its second and last phase (June 2019 - February 2020). In this letter, we describe the search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{82}$Se with a total exposure (phase I + II) of 8.82 kg$\times$yr of isotope. We set a limit on the half-life of $^{82}$Se to the ground state of $^{82}$Kr of T$^{0\nu}_{1/2}$($^{82}$Se)$>$ 4.6$\times \mathrm{10}^{24}$ yr (90\% credible interval), corresponding to an effective Majorana neutrino mass m$_{\beta\beta} <$ (263 -- 545) meV. We also set the most stringent lower limits on the neutrinoless decays of $^{82}$Se to the 0$_1^+$, 2$_1^+$ and 2$_2^+$ excited states of $^{82}$Kr, finding 1.8$\times$10$^{23}$ yr, 3.0$\times$10$^{23}$ yr, 3.2$\times$10$^{23}$ yr (90$\%$ credible interval) respectively.

15. Production of monochromatic $^{228}$Ra $\alpha$-sources for detector characterization

Abstract: The response of particle detectors to different types of radiation is not necessarily identical and, in some cases, neglecting this behavior can lead to a misinterpretation of the acquired data. While commercial radioactive sources are in general suitable to investigate the response to $\beta$'s and $\gamma$'s, in the case of $\alpha$'s the need for custom-made sources arises from the intrinsic properties of $\alpha$ radiation, which imposes that the emitter directly faces the detector. In this work, we show how to flexibly produce $\alpha$ sources to be employed in multiple studies of detector characterization. These are obtained starting from a set of primary sources obtained from the collection of radioactive $^{228}$Ra ions at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. We illustrate the potential of this technique with practical cases of application to scintillators and bolometric detectors and examples of the results obtained so far.

Abstract: One of the most energetic events in the Universe are core-collapse Supernovae (SNe), where almost all the star's binding energy is released as neutrinos. These particles are direct probes of the processes occurring in the stellar core and provide unique insights into the gravitational collapse. RES-NOVA will revolutionize how we detect neutrinos from astrophysical sources, by deploying the first ton-scale array of cryogenic detectors made from archaeological lead. Pb offers the highest neutrino interaction cross-section via coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS). Such process will enable RES-NOVA to be equally sensitive to all neutrino flavors. For the first time, we propose to use archaeological Pb as sensitive target material in order to achieve an ultra-low background level in the region of interest (\textit{O}(1keV)). All these features make possible the deployment of the first cm-scale neutrino telescope for the investigation of astrophysical sources. In this contribution, we will characterize the radiopurity level and the performance of a small-scale proof-of-principle detector of RES-NOVA, consisting in a PbWO$_4$ crystal made from archaeological-Pb operated as cryogenic detector.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the most sensitive experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in $^{130}\text{Te}$. CUORE uses a cryogenic array of 988 TeO$_2$ calorimeters operated at $\sim$10 mK with a total mass of 741 kg. To further increase the sensitivity, the detector response must be well understood. Here, we present a non-linear thermal model for the CUORE experiment on a detector-by-detector basis. We have examined both equilibrium and dynamic electro-thermal models of detectors by numerically fitting non-linear differential equations to the detector data of a subset of CUORE channels which are well characterized and representative of all channels. We demonstrate that the hot-electron effect and electric-field dependence of resistance in NTD-Ge thermistors alone are inadequate to describe our detectors' energy dependent pulse shapes. We introduce an empirical second-order correction factor in the exponential temperature dependence of the thermistor, which produces excellent agreement with energy-dependent pulse shape data up to 6 MeV. We also present a noise analysis using the fitted thermal parameters and show that the intrinsic thermal noise is negligible compared to the observed noise for our detectors., Comment: 34 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso of INFN in Italy is an experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta (0$\nu\beta\beta$) decay. Its main goal is to investigate this decay in $^{130}$Te, but its ton-scale mass and low background make CUORE sensitive to other rare processes as well. In this work, we present our first results on the search for \nbb decay of $^{128}$Te, the Te isotope with the second highest natural isotopic abundance. We find no evidence for this decay, and using a Bayesian analysis we set a lower limit on the $^{128}$Te \nbb decay half-life of T$_{1/2} > 3.6 \times 10^{24}$ yr (90\% CI). This represents the most stringent limit on the half-life of this isotope, improving by over a factor 30 the previous direct search results, and exceeding those from geochemical experiments for the first time.

Abstract: CUORE is a large scale cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in $^{130}$Te. The CUORE detector is made of natural tellurium, providing the possibility of rare event searches on isotopes other than $^{130}$Te. In this work we describe a search for neutrinoless positron emitting electron capture ($0\nu\beta^+EC$) decay in $^{120}$Te with a total TeO$_2$ exposure of 355.7 kg $\cdot$ yr, corresponding to 0.2405 kg $\cdot$ yr of $^{120}$Te. Albeit $0 \nu \beta\beta$ with two final state electrons represents the most promising channel, the emission of a positron and two 511-keV $\gamma$s make $0\nu\beta^+EC$ decay signature extremely clear. To fully exploit the potential offered by the detector modularity we include events with different topology and perform a simultaneous fit of five selected signal signatures. Using blinded data we extract a median exclusion sensitivity of $3.4 \cdot 10^{22}$ yr at 90% Credibility Interval (C.I.). After unblinding we find no evidence of $0\nu\beta^+EC$ signal and set a 90% C.I. Bayesian lower limit of $2.9 \cdot 10^{22}$ yr on $^{120}$Te half-life. This result improves by an order of magnitude the existing limit from the combined analysis of CUORE-0 and Cuoricino.

Abstract: Current experiments to search for broken lepton-number symmetry through the observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$) provide the most stringent limits on the Majorana nature of neutrinos and the effective Majorana neutrino mass ($m_{\beta\beta}$). The next-generation experiments will focus on the sensitivity to the $0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$ half-life of $\mathcal{O}(10^{27}$--$10^{28}$~years$)$ and $m_{\beta\beta}\lesssim15$~meV, which would provide complete coverage of the so-called Inverted Ordering region of the neutrino mass parameter space. By taking advantage of recent technological breakthroughs, new, future calorimetric experiments at the 1-ton scale can increase the sensitivity by at least another order of magnitude, exploring the large fraction of the parameter space that corresponds to the Normal neutrino mass ordering. In case of a discovery, such experiments could provide important insights toward a new understanding of the mechanism of $0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$. We present here a series of projects underway that will provide advancements in background reduction, cryogenic readout, and physics searches beyond $0\mathrm{\nu\beta\beta}$, all moving toward the next-to-next generation CUPID-1T detector., Comment: contribution to Snowmass 2021

Abstract: RES-NOVA is a newly proposed experiment for the detection of neutrinos from astrophysical sources, mainly Supernovae, using an array of cryogenic detectors made of PbWO$_4$ crystals produced from archaeological Pb. This unconventional material, characterized by intrinsic high radiopurity, enables to achieve low-background levels in the region of interest for the neutrino detection via Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE$\nu$NS). This signal lies at the detector energy threshold, O(1 keV), and it is expected to be hidden by naturally occurring radioactive contaminants of the crystal absorber. Here, we present the results of a radiopurity assay on a 0.84 kg PbWO$_4$ crystal produced from archaeological Pb operated as a cryogenic detector. The crystal internal radioactive contaminations are: $^{232}$Th $<$40 $\mu$Bq/kg, $^{238}$U $<$30 $\mu$Bq/kg, $^{226}$Ra 1.3 mBq/kg and $^{210}$Pb 22.5 mBq/kg. We present also a background projection for the final experiment and possible mitigation strategies for further background suppression. Abstract: The CUPID-Mo experiment to search for 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{100}$Mo has been recently completed after about 1.5 years of operation at Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France). It served as a demonstrator for CUPID, a next generation 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay experiment. CUPID-Mo was comprised of 20 enriched Li$_2$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating calorimeters, each with a mass of $\sim$ 0.2 kg, operated at $\sim$20 mK. We present here the final analysis with the full exposure of CUPID-Mo ($^{100}$Mo exposure of 1.47 kg$\times$yr) used to search for lepton number violation via 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay. We report on various analysis improvements since the previous result on a subset of data, reprocessing all data with these new techniques. We observe zero events in the region of interest and set a new limit on the $^{100}$Mo 0$\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $T^{0\nu}_{1/2} > 1.8 \times 10^{24}$ year (stat.+syst.) at 90% CI. Under the light Majorana neutrino exchange mechanism this corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\left < (0.28$--$0.49)$ eV, dependent upon the nuclear matrix element utilized.

Abstract: CUPID will be a next generation experiment searching for the neutrinoless double $\beta$ decay, whose discovery would establish the Majorana nature of the neutrino. Based on the experience achieved with the CUORE experiment, presently taking data at LNGS, CUPID aims to reach a background free environment by means of scintillating Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals coupled to light detectors. Indeed, the simultaneous heat and light detection allows us to reject the dominant background of $\alpha$ particles, as proven by the CUPID-0 and CUPID-Mo demonstrators. In this work we present the results of the first test of the CUPID baseline module. In particular, we propose a new optimized detector structure and light sensors design to enhance the engineering and the light collection, respectively. We characterized the heat detectors, achieving an energy resolution of (5.9 $\pm$ 0.2) keV FWHM at the $Q$-value of $^{100}$Mo (about 3034 keV). We studied the light collection of the baseline CUPID design with respect to an alternative configuration which features gravity-assisted light detectors' mounting. In both cases we obtained an improvement in the light collection with respect to past measures and we validated the particle identification capability of the detector, which ensures an $\alpha$ particle rejection higher than 99.9%, fully satisfying the requirements for CUPID., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: The past few decades have seen major developments in the design and operation of cryogenic particle detectors. This technology offers an extremely good energy resolution - comparable to semiconductor detectors - and a wide choice of target materials, making low temperature calorimetric detectors ideal for a variety of particle physics applications. Rare event searches have continued to require ever greater exposures, which has driven them to ever larger cryogenic detectors, with the CUORE experiment being the first to reach a tonne-scale, mK-cooled, experimental mass. CUORE, designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay, has been operational since 2017 at a temperature of about 10 mK. This result has been attained by the use of an unprecedentedly large cryogenic infrastructure called the CUORE cryostat: conceived, designed and commissioned for this purpose. In this article the main characteristics and features of the cryogenic facility developed for the CUORE experiment are highlighted. A brief introduction of the evolution of the field and of the past cryogenic facilities are given. The motivation behind the design and development of the CUORE cryogenic facility is detailed as are the steps taken toward realization, commissioning, and operation of the CUORE cryostat. The major challenges overcome by the collaboration and the solutions implemented throughout the building of the cryogenic facility will be discussed along with the potential improvements for future facilities. The success of CUORE has opened the door to a new generation of large-scale cryogenic facilities in numerous fields of science. Broader implications of the incredible feat achieved by the CUORE collaboration on the future cryogenic facilities in various fields ranging from neutrino and dark matter experiments to quantum computing will be examined., Comment: 45 pages, 14 figures

Abstract: Rare event physics demands very detailed background control, high-performance detectors, and custom analysis strategies. Cryogenic calorimeters combine all these ingredients very effectively, representing a promising tool for next-generation experiments. CUPID-0 is one of the most advanced examples of such a technique, having demonstrated its potential with several results obtained with limited exposure. In this paper, we present a further application. Exploiting the analysis of delayed coincidence, we can identify the signals caused by the $^{220}$Rn-$^{216}$Po decay sequence on an event-by-event basis. The analysis of these events allows us to extract the time differences between the two decays, leading to a new evaluation of $^{216}$ half-life, estimated as (143.3 $\pm$ 2.8) ms., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract: Localization and modeling of radioactive contaminations is a challenge that ultra-low background experiments are constantly facing. These are fundamental steps both to extract scientific results and to further reduce the background of the detectors. Here we present an innovative technique based on the analysis of $\alpha-\alpha$ delayed coincidences in $^{232}$Th and $^{238}$U decay chains, developed to investigate the contaminations of the ZnSe crystals in the CUPID-0 experiment. This method allows to disentangle surface and bulk contaminations of the detectors relying on the different probability to tag delayed coincidences as function of the $\alpha$ decay position.

Abstract: The possibility that neutrinos may be their own antiparticles, unique among the known fundamental particles, arises from the symmetric theory of fermions proposed by Ettore Majorana in 1937. Given the profound consequences of such Majorana neutrinos, among which is a potential explanation for the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe via leptogenesis, the Majorana nature of neutrinos commands intense experimental scrutiny globally; one of the primary experimental probes is neutrinoless double beta ($0 \nu \beta \beta$) decay. Here we show results from the search for $0 \nu \beta \beta$ decay of $^{130}$Te, using the latest advanced cryogenic calorimeters with the CUORE experiment. CUORE, operating just 10 millikelvin above absolute zero, has pushed the state of the art on three frontiers: the sheer mass held at such ultra-low temperatures, operational longevity, and the low levels of ionising radiation emanating from the cryogenic infrastructure. We find no evidence for $0 \nu \beta \beta$ decay and set a lower bound of $T_{1/2}^{0 \nu} > 2.2 \times 10^{25}$ years at a 90% credibility interval. We discuss potential applications of the advances made with CUORE to other fields such as direct dark matter, neutrino and nuclear physics searches and large-scale quantum computing, which can benefit from sustained operation of large payloads in a low-radioactivity, ultra-low temperature cryogenic environment.

Abstract: RES-NOVA is a new proposed experiment for the investigation of astrophysical neutrino sources with archaeological Pb-based cryogenic detectors. RES-NOVA will exploit Coherent Elastic neutrino-Nucleus Scattering (CE$\nu$NS) as detection channel, thus it will be equally sensitive to all neutrino flavors produced by Supernovae (SNe). RES-NOVA with only a total active volume of (60 cm)$^3$ and an energy threshold of 1 keV will probe the entire Milky Way Galaxy for (failed) core-collapse SNe with $> 3 \sigma$ detection significance. The high detector modularity makes RES-NOVA ideal also for reconstructing the main parameters (e.g. average neutrino energy, star binding energy) of SNe occurring in our vicinity, without deterioration of the detector performance caused by the high neutrino interaction rate. For the first time, distances $<3$ kpc can be surveyed, similarly to the ones where all known past galactic SNe happened. We discuss the RES-NOVA potential, accounting for a realistic setup, considering the detector geometry, modularity and background level in the region of interest. We report on the RES-NOVA background model and on the sensitivity to SN neutrinos as a function of the distance travelled by neutrinos.

Abstract: The CUORE experiment is a large bolometric array searching for the lepton number violating neutrino-less double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) in the isotope $\mathrm{^{130}Te}$. In this work we present the latest results on two searches for the double beta decay (DBD) of $\mathrm{^{130}Te}$ to the first $0^{+}_2$ excited state of $\mathrm{^{130}Xe}$: the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and the Standard Model-allowed two-neutrinos double beta decay ($2\nu\beta\beta$). Both searches are based on a 372.5 kg$\times$yr TeO$_2$ exposure. The de-excitation gamma rays emitted by the excited Xe nucleus in the final state yield a unique signature, which can be searched for with low background by studying coincident events in two or more bolometers. The closely packed arrangement of the CUORE crystals constitutes a significant advantage in this regard. The median limit setting sensitivities at 90\% Credible Interval (C.I.) of the given searches were estimated as $\mathrm{S^{0\nu}_{1/2} = 5.6 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the ${0\nu\beta\beta}$ decay and $\mathrm{S^{2\nu}_{1/2} = 2.1 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the ${2\nu\beta\beta}$ decay. No significant evidence for either of the decay modes was observed and a Bayesian lower bound at $90\%$ C.I. on the decay half lives is obtained as: $\mathrm{(T_{1/2})^{0\nu}_{0^+_2} > 5.9 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ mode and $\mathrm{(T_{1/2})^{2\nu}_{0^+_2} > 1.3 \times 10^{24} \: \mathrm{yr}}$ for the $2\nu\beta\beta$ mode. These represent the most stringent limits on the DBD of $^{130}$Te to excited states and improve by a factor $\sim5$ the previous results on this process., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: The nucleus is an extraordinarily complex object where fundamental forces are at work. The solution of this many-body problem has challenged physicists for decades: several models with complementary virtues and flaws have been adopted, none of which has a universal predictive capability. Double beta decay is a second-order weak nuclear decay whose precise measurement might steer fundamental improvements in nuclear theory. Its knowledge paves the way to a much better understanding of many-body nuclear dynamics and clarifies, in particular, the role of multiparticle states. This is a useful input to a complete understanding of the dynamics of neutrino-less double beta decay, the chief physical process whose discovery may shed light to the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe and unveil the true nature of neutrinos. Here, we report the study of $2\nu\beta\beta$-decay in $^{82}$Se with the CUPID-0 detector, an array of ZnSe crystals maintained at a temperature close to 'absolute zero' in an ultralow background environment. Thanks to the unprecedented accuracy in the measurement of the two electrons spectrum, we prove that the decay is dominated by a single intermediate state. We obtain also the most precise value for the $^{82}$Se $2\nu\beta\beta$-decay half-life of $T^{2{\nu}}_{1/2} = [8.6^{+0.2}_{-0.1}] \times 10^{19}$ yr.

Abstract: We measured two-neutrino double beta decay of $^{130}$Te using an exposure of 300.7 kg$\cdot$yr accumulated with the CUORE detector. Using a Bayesian analysis to fit simulated spectra to experimental data, it was possible to disentangle all the major background sources and precisely measure the two-neutrino contribution. The half-life is in agreement with past measurements with a strongly reduced uncertainty: $T^{2\nu}_{1/2} = 7.71^{+0.08}_{-0.06}\mathrm{(stat.)}^{+0.12}_{-0.15}\mathrm{(syst.)}\times10^{20}$ yr. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the refining procedure by measuring the internal contaminations of the purified zinc with a high-purity germanium detector at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. The total activity of cosmogenic activated nuclides is measured at the level of a few mBq/kg, as well as limits on naturally occurring radionuclides are set to less than mBq/kg. The excellent radiopurity of the zinc sample allows us to search for electron capture with positron emission and neutrinoless double electron capture of $^{64}$Zn, setting the currently most stringent lower limits on their half-lives, $T_{1/2}^{\varepsilon\beta^+} > 2.7 \times 10^{21}\text{yr}$ (90% C.I.), and $T_{1/2}^{0\nu2\varepsilon}> 2.6 \times 10^{21}\text{yr}$ (90% C.I.), respectively.

Abstract: A convincing observation of neutrino-less double beta decay (0$\nu$DBD) relies on the possibility of operating high energy-resolution detectors in background-free conditions. Scintillating cryogenic calorimeters are one of the most promising tools to fulfill the requirements for a next-generation experiment. Several steps have been taken to demonstrate the maturity of this technique, starting from the successful experience of CUPID-0. The CUPID-0 experiment demonstrated the complete rejection of the dominant alpha background measuring the lowest counting rate in the region of interest for this technique. Furthermore, the most stringent limit on the $^{82}$Se 0$\nu$DBD was established running 26 ZnSe crystals during two years of continuous detector operation. Abstract: A scintillating bolometer based on a large cubic Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal (45 mm side) and a Ge wafer (scintillation detector) has been operated in the CROSS cryogenic facility at the Canfranc underground laboratory in Spain. The dual-readout detector is a prototype of the technology that will be used in the next-generation $0\nu2\beta$ experiment CUPID. The measurements were performed at 18 and 12 mK temperature in a pulse tube dilution refrigerator. This setup utilizes the same technology as the CUORE cryostat that will host CUPID and so represents an accurate estimation of the expected performance. The Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometer shows a high energy resolution of 6 keV FWHM at the 2615 keV $\gamma$ line. The detection of scintillation light for each event triggered by the Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ bolometer allowed for a full separation ($\sim$8$\sigma$) between $\gamma$($\beta$) and $\alpha$ events above 2 MeV. The Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystal also shows a high internal radiopurity with $^{228}$Th and $^{226}$Ra activities of less than 3 and 8 $\mu$Bq/kg, respectively. Taking also into account the advantage of a more compact and massive detector array, which can be made of cubic-shaped crystals (compared to the cylindrical ones), this test demonstrates the great potential of cubic Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers for high-sensitivity searches for the $^{100}$Mo $0\nu2\beta$ decay in CROSS and CUPID projects., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures, 1 table

Abstract: The CUPID Collaboration is designing a tonne-scale, background-free detector to search for double beta decay with sufficient sensitivity to fully explore the parameter space corresponding to the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy scenario. One of the CUPID demonstrators, CUPID-Mo, has proved the potential of enriched Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals as suitable detectors for neutrinoless double beta decay search. In this work, we characterised cubic crystals that, compared to the cylindrical crystals used by CUPID-Mo, are more appealing for the construction of tightly packed arrays. We measured an average energy resolution of (6.7$\pm$0.6) keV FWHM in the region of interest, approaching the CUPID target of 5 keV FWHM. We assessed the identification of $\alpha$ particles with and without a reflecting foil that enhances the scintillation light collection efficiency, proving that the baseline design of CUPID already ensures a complete suppression of this $\alpha$-induced background contribution. We also used the collected data to validate a Monte Carlo simulation modelling the light collection efficiency, which will enable further optimisations of the detector.

Abstract: The CUPID-Mo experiment at the Laboratoire Souterrain de Modane (France) is a demonstrator for CUPID, the next-generation ton-scale cryogenic $0\nu\beta\beta$ experiment. It consists of a 4.2 kg array of 20 enriched Li$_{2}$$^{100}$MoO$_4$ scintillating bolometers to search for the lepton number violating process of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{100}$Mo. With more than one year of operation (2.16 kg$\times$yr of physics data), no event in the region of interest and hence no evidence for $0\nu\beta\beta$ is observed. We report a new limit on the half-life of $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay in $^{100}$Mo of $T_{1/2} > 1.5 \times 10^{24}\,$yr at 90 % C.I. The limit corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass $\langle m_{\beta\beta} \rangle$ $<$ (0.31--0.54)$\,$eV, dependent on the nuclear matrix element in the light Majorana neutrino exchange interpretation.

Abstract: Precise characterization of detector time resolution is of crucial importance for next-generation cryogenic-bolometer experiments searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay, such as CUPID, in order to reject background due to pile-up of two-neutrino double-beta decay events. In this paper, we describe a technique developed to study the pile-up rejection capability of cryogenic bolometers. Our approach, which consists of producing controlled pile-up events with a programmable waveform generator, has the benefit that we can reliably and reproducibly control the time separation and relative energy of the individual components of the generated pile-up events. The resulting data allow us to optimize and benchmark analysis strategies to discriminate between individual and pile-up pulses. We describe a test of this technique performed with a small array of detectors at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, in Italy; we obtain a 90% rejection efficiency against pulser-generated pile-up events with rise time of ~15ms down to time separation between the individual events of about 2ms.

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first cryogenic experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay that has been able to reach the one-ton scale. The detector, located at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso in Italy, consists of an array of 988 TeO$_2$ crystals arranged in a compact cylindrical structure of 19 towers. Following the completion of the detector construction in August 2016, CUORE began its first physics data run in 2017 at a base temperature of about 10 mK. Following multiple optimization campaigns in 2018, CUORE is currently in stable operating mode. In 2019, CUORE released its 2\textsuperscript{nd} result of the search for $0\nu\beta\beta$ with a TeO$_2$ exposure of 372.5 kg$\cdot$yr and a median exclusion sensitivity to a $^{130}$Te $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $1.7\cdot 10^{25}$ yr. We find no evidence for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and set a 90\% C.I. (credibility interval) Bayesian lower limit of $3.2\cdot 10^{25}$ yr on the $^{130}$Te $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life. In this work, we present the current status of CUORE's search for $0\nu\beta\beta$, as well as review the detector performance. Abstract: CUPID-Mo is a cryogenic detector array designed to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{100}$Mo. It uses 20 scintillating $^{100}$Mo-enriched Li$_2$MoO$_4$ bolometers instrumented with Ge light detectors to perform active suppression of $\alpha$ backgrounds, drastically reducing the expected background in the $0\nu\beta\beta$ signal region. As a result, pileup events and small detector instabilities that mimic normal signals become non-negligible potential backgrounds. These types of events can in principle be eliminated based on their signal shapes, which are different from those of regular bolometric pulses. We show that a purely data-driven principal component analysis based approach is able to filter out these anomalous events, without the aid of detector response simulations.

Abstract: CUPID-0 is the first pilot experiment of CUPID, a next-generation project searching for neutrino-less double beta decay. In its first scientific run, CUPID-0 operated 26 ZnSe cryogenic calorimeters coupled to light detectors in the underground Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso. In this work, we analyzed a ZnSe exposure of 11.34 kg$\times$yr to search for the neutrino-less double beta decay of $^{70}$Zn and for the neutrino-less positron-emitting electron capture of $^{64}$Zn. We found no evidence for these decays and set 90$\%$ credible interval limits of ${\rm T}_{1/2}^{0\nu\beta\beta}(^{70}{\rm Zn}) > 1.6 \times 10^{21}$ yr and ${\rm T}_{1/2}^{0\nu EC \beta+}(^{64}{\rm Zn}) > 1.2 \times 10^{22}$ yr, surpassing by almost two orders of magnitude the previous experimental results

Abstract: We report new results from the search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{130}$Te with the CUORE detector. This search benefits from a four-fold increase in exposure, lower trigger thresholds and analysis improvements relative to our previous results. We observe a background of $(1.38\pm0.07)\cdot10^{-2}$ counts$/($keV$\cdot$kg$\cdot$yr$)$ in the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay region of interest and, with a total exposure of 372.5 kg$\cdot$yr, we attain a median exclusion sensitivity of $1.7\cdot10^{25}$ yr. We find no evidence for $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay and set a $90\%$ CI Bayesian lower limit of $3.2\cdot10^{25}$ yr on the $^{130}$Te half-life for this process. In the hypothesis that $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay is mediated by light Majorana neutrinos, this results in an upper limit on the effective Majorana mass of 75-350 meV, depending on the nuclear matrix elements used., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Abstract: We report the measurement of the two-neutrino double-beta ($2\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{100}$Mo to the ground state of $^{100}$Ru using lithium molybdate (\crystal) scintillating bolometers. The detectors were developed for the CUPID-Mo program and operated at the EDELWEISS-III low background facility in the Modane underground laboratory. From a total exposure of $42.235$ kg$\times$d, the half-life of $^{100}$Mo is determined to be $T_{1/2}^{2\nu}=[7.12^{+0.18}_{-0.14}\,\mathrm{(stat.)}\pm0.10\,\mathrm{(syst.)}]\times10^{18}$ years. This is the most accurate determination of the $2\nu\beta\beta$ half-life of $^{100}$Mo to date. We also confirm, with the statistical significance of $>3\sigma$, that the single-state dominance model of the $2\nu\beta\beta$ decay of $^{100}$Mo is favored over the high-state dominance model., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables

Abstract: The CUPID-Mo experiment is searching for neutrinoless double beta decay in $^{100}$Mo, evaluating the technology of cryogenic scintillating Li$_{2}^{100}$MoO$_4$ detectors for CUPID (CUORE Upgrade with Particle ID). CUPID-Mo detectors feature background suppression using a dual-readout scheme with Li$_{2}$MoO$_4$ crystals complemented by Ge bolometers for light detection. The detection of both heat and scintillation light signals allows the efficient discrimination of $\alpha$ from $\gamma$&$\beta$ events. In this proceedings, we discuss results from the first 2 months of data taking in spring 2019. In addition to an excellent bolometric performance of 6.7$\,$keV (FWHM) at 2615$\,$keV and an $\alpha$ separation of better than 99.9\% for all detectors, we report on bulk radiopurity for Th and U. Finally, we interpret the accumulated physics data in terms of a limit of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu}\,> 3\times10^{23}\,$yr for $^{100}$Mo and discuss the sensitivity of CUPID-Mo until the expected end of physics data taking in early 2020., Comment: Proceedings for TAUP 2019, submitted to IOP Journal of Physics: Conference Series

Abstract: We present the search for Lorentz violation in the double beta decay of ^{82}Se~with CUPID-0, using an exposure of 9.95 kg x y. We found no evidence for the searched signal and set a limit on the isotropic components of the Lorentz violating coefficient of $\mathring{a}_{\text{of}}^{(3)} < 4.1\cdot10^{-6}$ GeV (90\% Credible Interval). This results is obtained with a Bayesian analysis of the experimental data and fully includes the systematic uncertainties of the model. This is the first limit on $\mathring{a}_{\text{of}}^{(3)}$ obtained with a scintillating bolometer, showing the potentiality of this technique.

Abstract: We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay of $^{82}$Se performed for the first time with cryogenic calorimeters, in the framework of the CUPID-0~experiment. With an exposure of 9.95 kg$\times$yr of Zn$^{82}$Se, we determine the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay half-life of $^{82}$Se with an unprecedented precision level, $T_{1/2}^{2\nu} = [8.60 \pm 0.03 \textrm{(stat.)}~^{+0.17}_{-0.10} \textrm{(syst.)}] \times 10^{19}~\textrm{yr}$. The very high signal-to-background ratio, along with the detailed reconstruction of the background sources allowed us to identify the single state dominance as the underlying mechanism of such process, demonstrating that the higher state dominance hypothesis is disfavored at the level of 5.5 $\sigma$.

Abstract: CUPID-Mo is a bolometric experiment to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) of $^{100}$Mo. In this article, we detail the CUPID-Mo detector concept, assembly, installation in the underground laboratory in Modane in 2018, and provide results from the first datasets. The demonstrator consists of an array of 20 scintillating bolometers comprised of $^{100}$Mo-enriched 0.2 kg Li$_2$MoO$_4$ crystals. The detectors are complemented by 20 thin cryogenic Ge bolometers acting as light detectors to distinguish $\alpha$ from $\gamma$/$\beta$ events by the detection of both heat and scintillation light signals. We observe good detector uniformity, facilitating the operation of a large detector array as well as excellent energy resolution of 5.3 keV (6.5 keV) FWHM at 2615 keV, in calibration (physics) data. Based on the observed energy resolutions and light yields a separation of $\alpha$ particles at much better than 99.9\% with equally high acceptance for $\gamma$/$\beta$ events is expected for events in the region of interest for $^{100}$Mo $0\nu\beta\beta$. We present limits on the crystals' radiopurity ($\leq$3 $\mu$Bq/kg of $^{226}$Ra and $\leq$2 $\mu$Bq/kg of $^{232}$Th). Based on these initial results we also discuss a sensitivity study for the science reach of the CUPID-Mo experiment, in particular, the ability to set the most stringent half-life limit on the $^{100}$Mo $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay after half a year of livetime. Abstract: CUPID-0 is the first pilot experiment of CUPID, a next-generation project for the measurement of neutrinoless double beta decay (0$\nu$DBD) with scintillating bolometers. The detector, consisting of 24 enriched and 2 natural ZnSe crystals, has been taking data at Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso from June 2017 to December 2018, collecting a $^{82}$Se exposure of 5.29 kg$\times$yr. In this paper we present the phase-I results in the search for 0$\nu$DBD. We demonstrate that the technology implemented by CUPID-0 allows us to reach the lowest background for calorimetric experiments: $(3.5^{+1.0}_{-0.9})\times10^{-3}$ counts/(keV kg yr). Monitoring 3.88$\times$10$^{25}$ $^{82}$Se nuclei$\times$yr we reach a 90% credible interval median sensitivity of $\rm{T}^{0\nu}_{1/2}>5.0\times10^{24} \rm{yr}$ and set the most stringent limit on the half-life of $^{82}$Se 0$\nu$DBD : $\rm{T}^{0\nu}_{1/2}>3.5\times10^{24} \rm{yr}$ (90% credible interval), corresponding to m$_{\beta\beta} <$ (311-638) meV depending on the nuclear matrix element calculations., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Abstract: The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso, Italy, is the world's largest bolometric experiment. The detector consists of an array of 988 TeO2 crystals, for a total mass of 742 kg. CUORE is presently in data taking, searching for the neutrinoless double beta decay of 130 Te. CUORE is operational since the spring of 2017. The initial science run already allowed to provide the most stringent limit on the neutrinoless double beta decay half-life of 130Te, and to perform the most precise measurement of the two-neutrino double beta decay half-life. Up to date, we have more than doubled the collected exposure. Abstract: CUPID-0 is the first large mass array of enriched Zn$^{82}$Se scintillating low temperature calorimeters, operated at LNGS since 2017. During its first scientific runs, CUPID-0 collected an exposure of 9.95 kg yr. Thanks to the excellent rejection of $\alpha$ particles, we attained the lowest background ever measured with thermal detectors in the energy region where we search for the signature of $^{82}$Se neutrinoless double beta decay. In this work we develop a model to reconstruct the CUPID-0 background over the whole energy range of experimental data. We identify the background sources exploiting their distinctive signatures and we assess their extremely low contribution (down to $\sim10^{-4}$ counts/(keV kg yr)) in the region of interest for $^{82}$Se neutrinoless double beta decay search. This result represents a crucial step towards the comprehension of the background in experiments based on scintillating calorimeters and in next generation projects such as CUPID., Comment: This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in Eur. 50. Resolution enhancement with light/heat decorrelation in CUPID-0 bolometric detector

Abstract: The CUPID-0 experiment searches for neutrinoless double beta decay ($0\nu\beta\beta$) using the first array of enriched Zn$^{82}$Se scintillating bolometers with double (heat and light) read-out. To further enhance the CUPID-0 detector performances, the heat-light correlation has been exploited to improve the energy resolution. Different decorrelation algorithms have been studied and the best result is the average reduction of the full width at half maximum (FWHM) energy resolution to $(90.5\pm0.6)~\%$ of its original value , corresponding to a change from $\text{FWHM}=(20.7\pm0.5)~\text{keV}$ to $\text{FWHM}=(18.7\pm0.5)~\text{keV}$ at the 2615 keV $\gamma$ line.
