2. Special Technology for Special Children: Computers as Prostheses to Serve Communication and Autonomy in the Education of Handicapped Children.

Abstract

Reviewed are uses of the computer for communication and access to valuable educational, vocational, and recreational activities for a large class of people with serious communication problems such as deafness, autism, or severe physical handicaps. Some uses of the computer to benefit children immediately and directions for future research and development are suggested. Reported is pilot work with 10 multiply handicapped children (5 to 16 years old) which is noted to indicate hope for clinicians and teachers involved in the education and rehabilitation of such children. 3. Metaphors for Understanding Graphs: What You See Is What You See.

Abstract

Computer graphing makes it easier for students and teachers to create and manipulate graphs. Scale issues are nearly unavoidable in the computer context. In interviews and protocol analysis with six students from grade 8, and 12 students from grades 11 and 12, it became apparent that some aspects of scale are clearly understood very early while other aspects remain confusing to even some of the most successful students in pre-calculus and calculus, and that there is a consistency and meaning in metaphors which students invoked in explaining their ideas to themselves and teachers. Three metaphors inferred from students' words and one metaphor supplied by the authors are discussed. These are: (1) the computer as automatic paper and pencil; (2) scaling is like using a magnifying glass; (3) scaling as a rubber sheet (supplied by the authors); and (4) the mathematical curve as a bead necklace. Some implications concerning the curriculum are discussed. (YP)

Abstract

This report summarizes the work of a two-year project which focused primarily on the problems that students have with algebra in general, and graphs in particular. The first of two major sections in the document deals with the use of computer software to assist in the teaching of graphing. It concludes that thoughtful design and use of graphing software presents new opportunities for teaching about graphing. The next section of the report centers on the development of research instruments that are intended to study scale in the context of graphs of function. It includes a set of problem-based teaching materials that were used as research tools. The appendices contain descriptions of probes designed to see if students can interpret and create graphs of real-world phenomena, along with instruments dealing with mapping, scale, and computer explorations.
