The separation of physical forces acting on the tip of a magnetic force microscope (MFM) is essential for correct magnetic imaging. Electrostatic forces can be modulated by varying the tip-sample potential and minimized to map the local Kelvin potential. However, distinguishing magnetic forces from van der Waals forces typically requires two measurements with opposite tip magnetizations under otherwise identical measurement conditions. Here, we present an inverted magnetic force microscope where the sample is mounted on a flat cantilever for force sensing, and the magnetic tip is attached to a miniaturized electromagnet that periodically flips the tip magnetization. This setup enables the extraction of magnetic tip-sample interactions from the sidebands occurring at the switching rate in the cantilever oscillation spectrum. Our method achieves the separation of magnetic signals from other force contributions in a single-scan mode. Future iterations of this setup may incorporate membrane, trampoline, or string resonators with ultra-high quality factors, potentially improving measurement sensitivity by up to three orders of magnitude compared to the state-of-the-art MFM systems using cantilevers., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures in Main and 3 pages, 3 figures in supplement

Several recent studies have investigated low-precision accumulation, reporting improvements in throughput, power, and area across various platforms. However, the accompanying proposals have only considered the quantization-aware training (QAT) paradigm, in which models are fine-tuned or trained from scratch with quantization in the loop. As models continue to grow in size, QAT techniques become increasingly more expensive, which has motivated the recent surge in post-training quantization (PTQ) research. To the best of our knowledge, ours marks the first formal study of accumulator-aware quantization in the PTQ setting. To bridge this gap, we introduce AXE, a practical framework of accumulator-aware extensions designed to endow overflow avoidance guarantees to existing layer-wise PTQ algorithms. We theoretically motivate AXE and demonstrate its flexibility by implementing it on top of two state-of-the-art PTQ algorithms: GPFQ and OPTQ. We further generalize AXE to support multi-stage accumulation for the first time, opening the door for full datapath optimization and scaling to large language models (LLMs). We evaluate AXE across image classification and language generation models, and observe significant improvements in the trade-off between accumulator bit width and model accuracy over baseline methods.

Nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging (NanoMRI) is an active area of applied research with potential use in structural biology and quantum engineering. The success of this technological vision hinges on improving the instrument's sensitivity and functionality. A particular challenge is the optimization of the magnetic field gradient required for spatial encoding, and of the radio-frequency field used for spin control, in analogy to the components used in clinical MRI. In this work, we present the fabrication and characterization of a magnet-in-microstrip device that yields a compact form factor for both elements. We find that our design leads to a number of advantages, among them a fourfold increase of the magnetic field gradient compared to those achieved with traditional fabrication methods. Large Language Models (LLMs) such as GPT-3.5, Bard, and Claude exhibit applicability across numerous tasks. One domain of interest is their use in algorithmic hiring, specifically in matching resumes with job categories. Yet, this introduces issues of bias on protected attributes like gender, race and maternity status. The seminal work of Bertrand & Mullainathan (2003) set the gold-standard for identifying hiring bias via field experiments where the response rate for identical resumes that differ only in protected attributes, e.g., racially suggestive names such as Emily or Lakisha, is compared. We replicate this experiment on state-of-art LLMs (GPT-3.5, Bard, Claude and Llama) to evaluate bias (or lack thereof) on gender, race, maternity status, pregnancy status, and political affiliation. We evaluate LLMs on two tasks: (1) matching resumes to job categories; and (2) summarizing resumes with employment relevant information. Overall, LLMs are robust across race and gender. They differ in their performance on pregnancy status and political affiliation. We use contrastive input decoding on open-source LLMs to uncover potential sources of bias.

Long and thin scanning force cantilevers are sensitive to small forces, but also vulnerable to detrimental non-contact interactions. Here we present an experiment with a cantilever whose spring constant and static deflection are dominated by the interaction between the tip and the surface, a regime that we refer to as ``overcoupled''. The interactions are an obstacle for ultrasensitive measurements like nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging (nanoMRI). We discuss several strategies to overcome the challenges presented by the overcoupling, and demonstrate proton nanoMRI measurements of individual influenza virus particles., Comment: 9 pages, 9 figures

The interaction of dust particles with the LHC proton beams accounts for a major fraction of irregular beam loss events observed in LHC physics operation. The events cease after a few beam revolutions because of the expulsion of dust particles from the beam once they become ionized in the transverse beam tails. Despite the transient nature of these events, the resulting beam losses can trigger beam aborts or provoke quenches of superconducting magnets. In this paper, we study the characteristics of beam-dust particle interactions in the cryogenic arcs by reconstructing key observables like nuclear collision rates, loss durations and integral losses per event. The study is based on events recorded during 6.5 TeV operation with stored beam intensities of up to $\sim 3\times 10{^{14}}$ protons per beam. We show that inelastic collision rates can reach almost $10^{12}$ collisions per second, resulting in a loss of up to $\sim 1.6\times 10^{8}$ protons per event. We demonstrate that the experimental distributions and their dependence on beam parameters can be described quantitatively by a previously developed simulation model if dust particles are assumed to be attracted by the beam. The latter finding is consistent with recent time profile studies and yields further evidence that dust particles carry a negative charge when entering the beam. We also develop different hypotheses regarding the absence of higher-loss events in the measurements, although such events are theoretically not excluded by the simulation model. The results provide grounds for predicting dust-induced beam losses in presence of higher-intensity beams in future runs of the High-Luminosity LHC., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures, to be submitted to Phys. We demonstrate that soft-clamped silicon nitride strings with large aspect ratio can be operated at \si{\milli\kelvin} temperatures. The quality factors ($Q$) of two measured devices show consistent dependency on the cryostat temperature, with soft-clamped mechanical modes reaching $Q > 10^9$ at $46~\mathrm{mK}$. For low optical readout power, $Q$ is found to saturate, indicating good thermalization between the sample and the stage it is mounted on. Our best device exhibits a force sensitivity of $9.6~\mathrm{zN}/\sqrt{\mathrm{Hz}}$ and a thermal decoherence time of $0.38~\mathrm{s}$ which bode well for future applications such as nanomechanical force sensing and beyond.

Link prediction is one of the central problems in graph mining. However, recent studies highlight the importance of higher-order network analysis, where complex structures called motifs are the first-class citizens. We first show that existing link prediction schemes fail to effectively predict motifs. To alleviate this, we establish a general motif prediction problem and we propose several heuristics that assess the chances for a specified motif to appear. To make the scores realistic, our heuristics consider - among others - correlations between links, i.e., the potential impact of some arriving links on the appearance of other links in a given motif. Finally, for highest accuracy, we develop a graph neural network (GNN) architecture for motif prediction. Our architecture offers vertex features and sampling schemes that capture the rich structural properties of motifs. While our heuristics are fast and do not need any training, GNNs ensure highest accuracy of predicting motifs, both for dense (e.g., k-cliques) and for sparse ones (e.g., k-stars). We consistently outperform the best available competitor by more than 10% on average and up to 32% in area under the curve. Importantly, the advantages of our approach over schemes based on uncorrelated link prediction increase with the increasing motif size and complexity. We also successfully apply our architecture for predicting more arbitrary clusters and communities, illustrating its potential for graph mining beyond motif analysis.

We report the development of a scanning force microscope based on an ultra-sensitive silicon nitride membrane transducer. Our development is made possible by inverting the standard microscope geometry - in our instrument, the substrate is vibrating and the scanning tip is at rest. We present first topography images of samples placed on the membrane surface. Our measurements demonstrate that the membrane retains an excellent force sensitivity when loaded with samples and in the presence of a scanning tip. We discuss the prospects and limitations of our instrument as a quantum-limited force sensor and imaging tool.

Magnetic resonance force microscopy (MRFM) is a scanning probe technique capable of detecting MRI signals from nanoscale sample volumes, providing a paradigm-changing potential for structural biology and medical research. Thus far, however, experiments have not reached suffcient spatial resolution for retrieving meaningful structural information from samples. In this work, we report MRFM imaging scans demonstrating a resolution of 0.9 nm and a localization precision of 0.6 nm in one dimension. Our progress is enabled by an improved spin excitation protocol furnishing us with sharp spatial control on the MRFM imaging slice, combined with overall advances in instrument stability. From a modeling of the slice function, we expect that our arrangement supports spatial resolutions down to 0.3 nm given suffcient signal-to-noise ratio. Our experiment demonstrates the feasibility of sub-nanometer MRI and realizes an important milestone towards the three-dimensional imaging of macromolecular structures., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

We analyse the flow curves of a two-dimensional assembly of granular particles which are interacting via frictional contact forces. For packing fractions slightly below jamming, the fluid undergoes a large scale instability, implying a range of stress and strainrates where no stationary flow can exist. Whereas small systems were shown previously to exhibit hysteretic jumps between the low and high stress branches, large systems exhibit continuous shear thickening arising from averaging unsteady, spatially heterogeneous flows. The observed large scale patterns as well as their dynamics are found to depend on strainrate: At the lower end of the unstable region, force chains merge to form giant bands that span the system in compressional direction and propagate in dilational direction. At the upper end, we observe large scale clusters which extend along the dilational direction and propagate along the compressional direction. Both patterns, bands and clusters, come in with infinite correlation length similar to the sudden onset of system-spanning plugs in impact experiments.

We describe recurring patterns of numbers that survive each wave of the Sieve of Eratosthenes, including symmetries, uniform subdivisions, and quantifiable, predictive cycles that characterize their distribution across the number line. We generalize these results to numbers that are relatively prime to arbitrary sets of prime numbers and derive additional insights about the distribution of integers counted by Euler's phi-function., Comment: 18 pages

The size of a website's active user base directly affects its value. Thus, it is important to monitor and influence a user's likelihood to return to a site. Essential to this is predicting when a user will return. Current state of the art approaches to solve this problem come in two flavors: (1) Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) based solutions and (2) survival analysis methods. We observe that both techniques are severely limited when applied to this problem. Survival models can only incorporate aggregate representations of users instead of automatically learning a representation directly from a raw time series of user actions. RNNs can automatically learn features, but can not be directly trained with examples of non-returning users who have no target value for their return time. We develop a novel RNN survival model that removes the limitations of the state of the art methods. We demonstrate that this model can successfully be applied to return time prediction on a large e-commerce dataset with a superior ability to discriminate between returning and non-returning users than either method applied in isolation., Comment: Accepted into ECML PKDD 2018; 8 figures and 1 table

We compare different approximations for the wait time in distribution networks, in which all warehouses use an (R,Q)-order policy. Reporting on the results of extensive computational experiments, we evaluate the quality of several approximations presented in the literature. In these experiments, we used a simulation framework that was set-up to replicate the behavior of the material flow in a real distribution network rather than to comply with the assumptions made in the literature for the different approximation. First, we used random demand data to analyze which approximation works best under which conditions. In a second step, we then checked if the results obtained for random data can be confirmed also for real-world demand data from our industrial partner. Eventually, we derive some guidelines which shall help practitioners to select approximations which are suited well for their application. Still, our results recommend further testing with the actual application's data to verify if a chosen wait time approximation is indeed appropriate in a specific application setting., Comment: 27 pages,11 figures

We present a "nanoladder" geometry that minimizes the mechanical dissipation of ultrasensitive cantilevers. A nanoladder cantilever consists of a lithographically patterned scaffold of rails and rungs with feature size $\sim$ 100 nm. Compared to a rectangular beam of the same dimensions, the mass and spring constant of a nanoladder are each reduced by roughly two orders of magnitude. We demonstrate a low force noise of $158 (+62)(-42)\,$zN and $190 (+42)(-33)\,$zN in a one-Hz bandwidth for devices made from silicon and diamond, respectively, measured at temperatures between 100--150 mK. As opposed to bottom-up mechanical resonators like nanowires or nanotubes, nanoladder cantilevers can be batch-fabricated using standard lithography, which is a critical factor for applications in scanning force microscopy.

Individual cells exhibit specific proliferative responses to changes in microenvironmental conditions. Whether such potential is constrained by the cell density throughout the growth process is however unclear. Here, we identify a theoretical framework that captures how the information encoded in the initial density of cancer cell populations impacts their growth profile. By following the growth of hundreds of populations of cancer cells, we found that the time they need to adapt to the environment decreases as the initial cell density increases. Moreover, the population growth rate shows a maximum at intermediate initial densities. With the support of a mathematical model, we show that the observed interdependence of adaptation time and growth rate is significantly at odds both with standard logistic growth models and with the Monod-like function that governs the dependence of the growth rate on nutrient levels. Our results (i) uncover and quantify a previously unnoticed heterogeneity in the growth dynamics of cancer cell populations; (ii) unveil how population growth may be affected by single-cell adaptation times; (iii) contribute to our understanding of the clinically-observed dependence of the primary and metastatic tumor take rates on the initial density of implanted cancer cells., Comment: 25 pages (13 main text + 12 supplementary information), 16 figures (5 main text + 11 supplementary information). The hyperfine spectra of $^{51,53-64}$Mn were measured in two experimental runs using collinear laser spectroscopy at ISOLDE, CERN. Laser spectroscopy was performed on the atomic $3d^5\ 4s^2\ ^{6}\text{S}_{5/2}\rightarrow 3d^5\ 4s4p\ ^{6}\text{P}_{3/2}$ and ionic $3d^5\ 4s\ ^{5}\text{S}_2 \rightarrow 3d^5\ 4p\ ^{5}\text{P}_3$ transitions, yielding two sets of isotope shifts. The mass and field shift factors for both transitions have been calculated in the multiconfiguration Dirac-Fock framework and were combined with a King plot analysis in order to obtain a consistent set of mean-square charge radii which, together with earlier work on neutron-deficient Mn, allow the study of nuclear structure changes from $N=25$ across $N=28$ up to $N=39$. A clear development of deformation is observed towards $N=40$, confirming the conclusions of the nuclear moments studies. From a Monte Carlo Shell Model study of the shape in the Mn isotopic chain, it is suggested that the observed development of deformation is not only due to an increase in static prolate deformation but also due to shape fluctuations and triaxiality. Collinear laser spectroscopy has been performed on the $^{79}_{30}$Zn$_{49}$ isotope at ISOLDE-CERN. The existence of a long-lived isomer with a few hundred milliseconds half-life was confirmed, and the nuclear spins and moments of the ground and isomeric states in $^{79}$Zn as well as the isomer shift were measured. From the observed hyperfine structures, spins $I = 9/2$ and $I = 1/2$ are firmly assigned to the ground and isomeric states. The magnetic moment $\mu$ ($^{79}$Zn) = $-$1.1866(10) $\mu_{\rm{N}}$, confirms the spin-parity $9/2^{+}$ with a $\nu g_{9/2}^{-1}$ shell-model configuration, in excellent agreement with the prediction from large scale shell-model theories. The magnetic moment $\mu$ ($^{79m}$Zn) = $-$1.0180(12) $\mu_{\rm{N}}$ supports a positive parity for the isomer, with a wave function dominated by a 2h-1p neutron excitation across the $N = 50$ shell gap. The large isomer shift reveals an increase of the intruder isomer mean square charge radius with respect to that of the ground state: $\delta \langle r^{2}_{c}\rangle^{79,79m}$ = +0.204(6) fm$^{2}$, providing first evidence of shape coexistence., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 table, Accepeted by Phys. A two-dimensional dense fluid of frictional grains is shown to exhibit time-chaotic, spatially heterogeneous flow in a range of stress values, $\sigma$, chosen in the unstable region of s-shaped flow curves. Stress controlled simulations reveal a phase diagram with reentrant stationary flow for small and large stress $\sigma$. In between no steady flow state can be reached, instead the system either jams or displays time dependent heterogeneous strain rates $\dot\gamma({\bf r},t)$. The results of simulations are in agreement with the stability analysis of a simple hydrodynamic model, coupling stress and microstructure which we tentatively associate with the frictional contact network.

When pulling a particle in a driven granular fluid with constant force $F_{ex}$, the probe particle approaches a steady-state average velocity $v$. This velocity and the corresponding friction coefficient of the probe $\zeta=F_{ex}/v$ are obtained within a schematic model of mode-coupling theory and compared to results from event-driven simulations. For small and moderate drag forces, the model describes the simulation results successfully for both the linear as well as the nonlinear region: The linear response regime (constant friction) for small drag forces is followed by shear thinning (decreasing friction) for moderate forces. For large forces, the model demonstrates a subsequent increasing friction in qualitative agreement with the data. The square-root increase of the friction with force found in [Fiege et al., Granular Matter $\boldsymbol{14}$, 247 (2012)] is explained by a simple kinetic theory., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We propose a phase diagram for the shear flow of dry granular particles in two dimensions based on simulations and a phenomenological Landau-theory for a nonequilibrium first order phase transition. Our approach incorporates both frictional as well as frictionless particles. The most important feature of the frictional phase diagram is re-entrant flow and a critical jamming point at finite stress. In the frictionless limit the regime of re-entrance vanishes and the jamming transition is continuous with a critical point at zero stress. The jamming phase diagrams derived from the model agree with the experiments of Bi et al. (Nature (2011)) and brings together previously conflicting numerical results.

A simple pathway to grow thin films of N-doped MgO (MgO:N), which has been found experimentally to be a ferromagnetic d0 insulator, is presented. It relies on the catalytic properties of a Mo(001) substrate using growth of Mg in a mixed atmosphere of O2 and N2. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy reveals that the films are insulating and exhibit an N-induced state slightly below the conduction band minimum.

Using high resolution spin- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we map the electronic structure and spin texture of the surface states of the topological insulator Sb2Te3. In combination with density functional calculations (DFT), we directly show that Sb2Te3 exhibits a partially occupied, single spin-Dirac cone around the Fermi energy, which is topologically protected. DFT obtains a spin polarization of the occupied Dirac cone states of 80-90%, which is in reasonable agreement with the experimental data after careful background subtraction. Furthermore, we observe a strongly spin-orbit split surface band at lower energy. This state is found at 0.8eV below the Fermi level at the gamma-point, disperses upwards, and disappears at about 0.4eV below the Fermi level into two different bulk bands. Along the gamma-K direction, the band is located within a spin-orbit gap. According to an argument given by Pendry and Gurman in 1975, such a gap must contain a surface state, if it is located away from the high symmetry points of the Brillouin zone. We investigate the dynamics of an intruder pulled by a constant force in a dense two-dimensional granular fluid by means of event-driven molecular dynamics simulations. In a first step, we show how a propagating momentum front develops and compactifies the system when reflected by the boundaries. To be closer to recent experiments \cite{candelier2010journey,candelier2009creep}, we then add a frictional force acting on each particle, proportional to the particle's velocity. We show how to implement frictional motion in an event-driven simulation. This allows us to carry out extensive numerical simulations aiming at the dependence of the intruder's velocity on packing fraction and pulling force. We identify a linear relation for small and a nonlinear regime for high pulling forces and investigate the dependence of these regimes on granular temperature.

In analogy to complex function theory we introduce a Szeg\"o metric in the context of hypercomplex function theory dealing with functions that take values in a Clifford algebra. In particular, we are dealing with Clifford algebra valued functions that are annihilated by the Euclidean Dirac operator in $\mathbb{R}^{m+1}$. These are often called monogenic functions. As a consequence of the isometry between two Hardy spaces of monogenic functions on domains that are related to each other by a conformal map, the generalized Szeg\"o metric turns out to have a pseudo-invariance under M\"obius transformations. This property is crucially applied to show that the curvature of this metric is always negative on bounded domains. Furthermore, it allows us to establish that this metric is complete on bounded domains., Comment: 21 pages

In this paper we deal with a new class of Clifford algebra valued automorphic forms on arithmetic subgroups of the Ahlfors-Vahlen group. The forms that we consider are in the kernel of the operator $D \Delta^{k/2}$ for some even $k \in {\mathbb{Z}}$. They will be called $k$-holomorphic Cliffordian automorphic forms. $k$-holomorphic Cliffordian functions are well equipped with many function theoretical tools. Furthermore, the real component functions have also the property that they are solutions to the homogeneous and inhomogeneous Weinstein equation. This function class includes the set of $k$-hypermonogenic functions as a special subset. While we have not been able so far to propose a construction for non-vanishing $k$-hypermonogenic cusp forms for $k \neq 0$, we are able to do so within this larger set of functions. After having explained their general relation to hyperbolic harmonic automorphic forms we turn to the construction of Poincar\'e series. These provide us with non-trivial examples of cusp forms within this function class. Then we establish a decomposition theorem of the spaces of $k$-holomorphic Cliffordian automorphic forms in terms of a direct orthogonal sum of the spaces of $k$-hypermonogenic Eisenstein series and of $k$-holomorphic Cliffordian cusp forms., Comment: 28 pages

Using a multi-resolution technique, we analyze large in-plane fracture fronts moving slowly between two sintered Plexiglas plates. We find that the roughness of the front exhibits two distinct regimes separated by a crossover length scale $\delta^*$. Below $\delta^*$, we observe a multi-affine regime and the measured roughness exponent $\zeta_{\parallel}^{-} = 0.60\pm 0.05$ is in agreement with the coalescence model. Above $\delta^*$, the fronts are mono-affine, characterized by a roughness exponent $\zeta_{\parallel}^{+} = 0.35\pm0.05$, consistent with the fluctuating line model. We relate the crossover length scale to fluctuations in fracture toughness and the stress intensity factor.

Ultrathin MgO films on Mo(100) with a thickness up to 12 ML are studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy at room temperature. The spatial variation of the work function within the MgO film is mapped by field emission resonance states (Gundlach oscillations) using dz/dU spectroscopy. We found circular spots with significantly reduced work function (DeltaPhi=0.6 eV), which are assigned to charged defects within the MgO film. On top of the MgO films, small Co cluster are deposited with an average contact area of 4 nm^2. These islands exhibit Coulomb oscillations in dI/dU spectra at room temperature. Good agreement with orthodox theory is achieved showing variations of the background charge Q_0 for islands at different positions, which are in accordance with the work function differences determined by the Gundlach oscillations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

We have investigated the influence of point defect disorder in the electronic properties of manganite films. Real-time mapping of ion irradiated samples conductivity was performed though conductive atomic force microscopy (CAFM). CAFM images show electronic inhomogeneities in the samples with different physical properties due to spatial fluctuations in the point defect distribution. As disorder increases, the distance between conducting regions increases and the metal-insulator transition shifts to lower temperatures. Transport properties in these systems can be interpreted in terms of a percolative model. The samples saturation magnetization decreases as the irradiation dose increases whereas the Curie temperature remains unchanged.

We have used oxygen ions irradiation to generate controlled structural disorder in thin manganite films. Conductive atomic force microscopy CAFM), transport and magnetic measurements were performed to analyze the influence of the implantation process in the physical properties of the films. CAFM images show regions with different conductivity values, probably due to the random distribution of point defect or inhomogeneous changes of the local Mn3+/4+ ratio to reduce lattice strains of the irradiated areas. The transport and magnetic properties of these systems are interpreted in this context. Metal-insulator transition can be described in the frame of a percolative model. Disorder increases the distance between conducting regions, lowering the observed TMI. Point defect disorder increases localization of the carriers due to increased disorder and locally enhanced strain field. Remarkably, even with the inhomogeneous nature of the samples, no sign of low field magnetoresistance was found. Point defect disorder decreases the system magnetization but doesn t seem to change the magnetic transition temperature. As a consequence, an important decoupling between the magnetic and the metal-insulator transition is found for ion irradiated films as opposed to the classical double exchange model scenario., Comment: 27 pages, 11 Figures

Using the spectroscopies based upon x-ray absorption, we have studied the structural and magnetic properties of Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O films ($x$ = 0.1 and 0.25) produced by reactive magnetron sputtering. These films show ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ above room temperature in bulk magnetization measurements. Our results show that the Co atoms are in a divalent state and in tetrahedral coordination, thus substituting Zn in the wurtzite-type structure of ZnO. However, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at the Co \textit{L}$_{2,3}$ edges reveals that the Co 3\textit{d} sublattice is paramagnetic at all temperatures down to 2 K, both at the surface and in the bulk of the films. The Co 3\textit{d} magnetic moment at room temperature is considerably smaller than that inferred from bulk magnetisation measurements, suggesting that the Co 3\textit{d} electrons are not directly at the origin of the observed ferromagnetism., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

This book is part of a series of case studies that demonstrate better ways to educate Ohio's students. The case study is part of the Transforming Learning Communities (TLC) Project, designed to support significant school-reform efforts among Ohio's elementary, middle, and high schools. This report describes the implementation of an innovative program at an elementary school in northern Ohio. The text focuses on the school's efforts in mathematics-instruction reform. It examines the research that structured the reform and its impact on school change. The reform efforts are further elaborated through a series of five vignettes that portray the changes occurring in mathematics instruction. The report then provides background information about the two principals who played significant parts in reform efforts and the dialectical relationship between tensions and reform that developed. It looks at the emergence of a critical mass of reform-minded teachers and the effort required to change the structure of leadership, instruction, and assessment. The last chapter describes the complexities of change, the alterations to epistemology, the presence of chaos, and the need for teachers and principals to believe in the reculturing of the school. Written feedback provided by the teacher to his or her students is an important aspect of formative assessment. After a theoretical introduction to teacher prerequisites for giving feedback and to the quality of written feedback in general, results from an implementation of feedback methods in classrooms will be described for the cases of Germany, Switzerland and Denmark. The focus will be on the inquiry method 'investigation in science' that requires from students such competences as planning and/or conducting experiments. This study examines the quality of written teacher feedback which was provided based on rubrics and templates for open comments. For this purpose, written teacher feedback itself, student artefacts and data from questionnaires were analysed. Furthermore, the benefits and challenges that teachers noticed in using written feedback will be examined. Finally, it will be discussed which means of support for teachers seem necessary in order to foster the implementation of written teacher feedback as part of formative assessment in inquiry-based science education. This chapter reports the results of three research studies on peer assessment carried out in different countries where it is an unusual practice (France, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic). The three research studies focus on different competences and different disciplines (sciences and mathematics), but they all involve inquiry-based approaches at primary and secondary school level. In the French study, the data reported in this chapter explore relationships between success in task processing and the ability to mark a peer's written artefact on the same task. The Swiss research study examines the type of peer feedback students offer their peers while assessing their models, based on a fine-grained analysis of peer feedback comments. In the Czech Republic, the study focuses on students' reflection on peer assessment in inquiry lessons. The three studies conclude the necessity of allowing the sharing of "knowledge authority" in the classroom to evolve and to be integrated into usual classroom practice. However, researchers have a divergent view on the sharing of responsibility for validation of knowledge between the student and the teacher. Moreover, we can conclude that peer assessment can be a way to trigger metacognitive work on knowledge and competences in science and on assessment criteria and teacher expectations, at a class level and individual student level. Sex differences in language use have been examined for many years, but no clear-cut conclusions exist. A meta-analysis of the existing literature was conducted regarding powerful/powerless language use, including 30 studies, with a total combined sample size of 3,012. The overall correlation indicated that men use more powerful language than women. Type of language feature and gender were found to be moderator variables. Findings suggest that: (1) since men are using more powerful language than women, men are also being perceived as more credible than women; and (2) powerful language is a skill that can be taught. Almost all of the participants in this review were university students--generally the classic 18-22-year-old group. It is possible that in other environments the effects would be more significant; in more "real-world" investigations, men would speak even more powerfully and women would speak even more "powerless-ly." Future research should focus on type of language feature, message elicitation, the dynamics of interaction, and naturally occurring language. Contains 1 table of data and 53 references. (Author/RS)

Demographic change in industrial countries will influence educational spending in potentially two ways. On the one hand, the decline in the number of school-age children should alleviate the financial pressure. On the other hand, the theoretical/empirical literature has established that the concomitantly increasing proportion of elderly in the population can influence the propensity of politicians to spend on education. Using a panel of the Swiss Cantons for the period from 1990 to 2002, we find that the education system has exhibited little elasticity in adjusting to changes in the school-age population, and that the share of the elderly population has a significantly negative influence on the willingness to spend on public education. This paper is a compilation of the major federal, legislative, administrative and statistical uses of the terms poverty, low income, and related expressions. The first section summarizes the most commonly used definitions of poverty. These are: (1) the official statistical poverty definition, (2) program eligibility guidelines of the Community Services Administration, (3) public assistance or independent eligibility in other welfare program guidelines, and (4) general types of poverty guidelines such as (a) a single dollar amount for all families, (b) higher percentages of the official Federal or Community Services Administration poverty lines, (c) percentage of median income, and (d) unspecified eligibility critera. It is noted that some programs use more than one type of definition of poverty. The remainder of the paper is organized by department or agency and describes, for each, the major poverty-related programs and their administrative guidelines and legislative usages. This paper does not list all programs which significantly benefit the poor, but only those that make use of poverty terminology. (Author/AM)

Fairleigh Dickinson University (New Jersey) students take four core general education courses from the second half of the freshman year through the first half of the junior year. All sections have the same syllabus, and faculty teaching them on separate campuses review and refine the courses together. Core course faculty participated actively in a program assessment after nine years. (MSE)

Examined two questions related to adolescents' perceived control, conceptualized as agentic representation persons construct for themselves: (1) To what extent is perceived control specific to particular domains? and (2) How many dimensions are involved in perceived control? Confirmatory factor analyses revealed a two-factor structure: an expectancy component and an appraisal component. (JBJ)
