The infrared absorption spectra of a number of gases found in planetary atmospheres were studied at high resolution. Absorption line measurements which can be of value for the interpretation of planetary spectra in terms of molecular abundances and conditions in the planetary atmospheres were provided. The high resolution spectra have yielded measurements of individual vibration rotation line parameters including positions, strengths, pressure broadened widths and, where assignments were unknown, the temperature sensitivity of the strengths. Such information allows the determinations of the absorption of a given molecular gas under planetary conditions of temperature and pressure and at the same time it provides the data necessary if the spectra are to be understood in terms of basic molecular theory. Thus this work has included spectral analysis in the form of line assignments as well as fitting of the data to Hamiltonian models. Such fitting is very useful in that it helps to confirm and extend the assignments.

A list of new methane line parameters for the 2385-3200 cm region included in the Air Force Geophysical Laboratory's compilation of molecular line parameters is presented. Line positions were determined by computer computations from Fourier transform spectrometer data using a Kitt Peak subroutine. With the exception of class IV lines, all line strengths were determined by the method of equivalent widths. Additional line strengths were measured from spectra taken at cold sample temperatures so that lower state transition energies could be determined experimentally. Observed line positions and strengths are given for 8076 absorptions with strengths greater than 3.3 x 10 to the -24 cm/molecule.

Individual strengths and wave numbers of 2080 methane absorption lines have been measured between 2700 and 2862 kaysers at an average resolution of 0.023 kayser using a grating spectrometer. The results include all lines with strengths greater than 0.00003 per sq cm/atm observable at 296 K with a maximum path of 32 m and a pressure of 4 torr.

The absorption spectra of methane at low temperature with application to Jupiter atmospheric methane absorption is discussed. Experiments were made between 11,900 and 11950/cm. Attempts were made to observe single lines and determine the intensity of the spectra.

The resolution enhancement procedure of Jansson et al. (1970) is applied to new high resolution spectra to obtain additional information about the tetrahedral fine structure. The effective vibration-rotation Hamiltonian given by Susskind (1972) is then used to interpret these data. It is found that virtually every detail of the observed spectrum is predicted. Many details of the deconvoluted spectra which were not evident in the observed spectrum are verified.
