We report the electrochemical investigation of 5% Al doped MoS$_2$@rGO composite as a high-performance anode for sodium (Na)-ion batteries. The x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy characterizations reveal that the Al doping increase the interlayer spacing of (002) plane of MoS$_2$ nanosheets and form a stable 1T phase. The galvanostatic charge-discharge measurements show the specific capacity stable around 450, 400, 350, 300 and 200 mAhg$^{-1}$ at current densities of 0.05, 0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 1~Ag$^{-1}$, respectively. Also, we observe the capacity retentions of 86% and 66% at 0.1 and 0.3 Ag$^{-1}$, respectively, over 200 cycles with a consistent Coulombic efficiency of nearly 100%. The cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy are used to find the kinetic behavior and the obtained value of diffusion coefficient falls in the range of 10$^{-10}$ to 10$^{-12}$ cm$^2$s$^{-1}$. Intriguingly, the in-situ EIS also explains the electrochemical kinetics of the electrode at different charge-discharge states with the variation of charge transfer resistance. Moreover, the post cycling investigation using ex-situ XRD and photoemission spectroscopy indicate the coexistence of 1T/2H phase and field-emission scanning electron microscopy confirm the stable morphology after 500 cycles. Also, the Na-ion transport properties are calculated for 1T Al--MoS$_2$@rGO interface and Al--MoS$_2$--MoS$_2$ interlayer host structure by theoretical calculations using density functional theory.

We study Na ion diffusion and electrochemical performance of NaVO$_3$ (NVO) as anode material in Li/Na--ion batteries with the specific capacity of $\approx$350 mAhg$^{-1}$ at the current density 11~mAg$^{-1}$ after 300 cycles. Remarkably, the capacity retains $\ge$200~mAhg$^{-1}$ even after 400~cycles at 44~mAg$^{-1}$ with Coulombic efficiency $>$99\%. The deduced diffusion coefficient from galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV) measurements for NVO as anode in Li--ion battery is in the range of 10$^{-10}$--10$^{-12}$~cm$^2$s$^{-1}$. In case of Na-ion batteries, the NVO electrode exhibits initial capacity of 385~mAhg$^{-1}$ at 7~mAg$^{-1}$ current rate, but the capacity degradation is relatively faster in subsequent cycles. We find the diffusion coefficient of NVO--Na cells similar to that of NVO--Li. On the other hand, our charge discharge measurements suggest that the overall performance of NVO anode is better in Li--ion battery than Na-ion. Moreover, we use the density functional theory to simulate the energetics of Na vacancy formation in the bulk of the NVO structure, which is found to be 0.88~eV higher than that of the most stable (100) surface. We report the electrochemical performance of nanostructures of Na$_{0.66}$V$_4$O$_{10}$ as cathode material for rechargeable batteries. The Rietveld refinement of room temperature x-ray diffraction pattern shows the monoclinic phase with C2/m space group. The cyclic voltammetry curves of prepared half-cells exhibit redox peaks at ~3.1 and 2.6~V, which are due to two-phase transition reaction between V$^{5+/4+}$ and can be assigned to the single step deintercalation/intercalation of Na-ion. We observe a good cycling stability with specific discharge capacity (measured vs. Na$^+$/Na) between 80 ($\pm$2) and 30 ($\pm$2) mAh g$^{-1}$ at a current density 3 and 50~mA g$^{-1}$, respectively. The electrochemical performance of Na$_{0.66}$V$_4$O$_{10}$ electrode was also tested with Li anode, which showed higher capacity, but decay faster than Na. Using density functional theory, we calculate the Na vacancy formation energies; 3.37~eV in the bulk of the material and 2.52~eV on the (100) surface, which underlines the importance of nanostructures., Comment: submitted

[Abriged] We discuss here the properties of the double cluster Abell 1758, at a redshift z~0.279, which shows strong evidence for merging. We analyse the optical properties of the North and South clusters of Abell 1758 based on deep imaging obtained with the CFHT archive Megaprime/Megacam camera in the g' and r' bands, covering a total region of about 1.05 x 1.16 deg^2. Our X-ray analysis is based on archive XMM-Newton images. Numerical simulations were performed using an N-body algorithm to treat the dark matter component, a semi-analytical galaxy formation model for the evolution of the galaxies and a grid-based hydrodynamic code with a PPM scheme for the dynamics of the intra-cluster medium. We have computed galaxy luminosity functions (GLFs) and 2D temperature and metallicity maps of the X-ray gas, which we then compared to the results of our numerical simulations. The GLFs of Abell 1758 North are well fit by Schechter functions in the g' and r' bands, but a small excess of bright galaxies, particularly in the r' band. On the contrary, the GLFs of Abell 1758 South are not well fit by Schechter functions: excesses of bright galaxies are seen in both bands. Comparing observational results to those derived from numerical simulations, we could mimic the most prominent features present in the metallicity map and propose an explanation for the dynamical history of the cluster. Particilarly, we found in particular that in the metal rich elongated regions of the North cluster, winds had been more efficient in transporting metal enriched gas to the outskirts than ram pressure stripping. It is discovered that the zero-dimensional character of the silicon atom dangling bond (DB) state allows controlled formation and occupation of a new form of quantum dot assemblies. Whereas on highly doped n-type substrates isolated DBs are negatively charged, it is found that Coulomb repulsion causes DBs separated by less than ~2 nm to experience reduced localized charge. The unoccupied states so created allow a previously unobserved electron tunnel-coupling of DBs, evidenced by a pronounced change in the time-averaged view recorded by scanning tunneling microscopy. Direct control over net electron occupation and tunnel-coupling of multi-DB ensembles through separation controlled is demonstrated. Through electrostatic control, it is shown that a pair of tunnel-coupled DBs can be switched from a symmetric bi-stable state to one exhibiting an asymmetric electron occupation. Similarly, the setting of an antipodal state in a square assembly of four DBs is achieved, demonstrating at room temperature the essential building block of a quantum cellular automata device., Comment: 19 pages, six figure - Supporting Information included
