Abstract: We measure for the first time the differential photoproduction cross section $d\sigma/dt$ of the $a_2(1320)$ meson at an average photon beam energy of 8.5~GeV, using data with an integrated luminosity of 104~pb$^{-1}$ collected by the GlueX experiment. We fully reconstruct the $\gamma p \to \eta\pi^0 p$ reaction and perform a partial-wave analysis in the $a_2(1320)$ mass region with amplitudes that incorporate the linear polarization of the beam. This allows us to separate for the first time the contributions of natural- and unnatural-parity exchanges. These measurements provide novel information about the photoproduction mechanism, which is critical for the search for spin-exotic states., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures plus supplemental material

Abstract: We present a measurement of the branching fraction and fraction of longitudinal polarization of $B^0 \to \rho^+ \rho^-$ decays, which have two $\pi^0$'s in the final state. We also measure time-dependent $CP$ violation parameters for decays into longitudinally polarized $\rho^+ \rho^-$ pairs. This analysis is based on a data sample containing $(387\pm6) \times 10^6$ \BBbar pairs collected with the Belle~II detector at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider in 2019-2022. We obtain ${B}(B^0\to\rho^+\rho^-) = (2.88 ^{+0.23}_{-0.22} {}^{+0.29}_{-0.27}) \times 10^{-5}, f_{L} = 0.921 ^{+0.024}_{-0.025} {}^{+0.017}_{-0.015}$, $S = -0.26\pm0.19\pm0.08$, and $C = -0.02\pm0.12^{+0.06}_{-0.05}$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. We use these results to perform an isospin analysis to constrain the CKM angle $\phi_2$ and obtain two solutions; the result consistent with other Standard Model constraints is $\phi_2 = (92.6^{+4.5}_{-4.8})^\circ$.

Abstract: We present the first search for the lepton flavor-violating decay modes $B^0 \rightarrow K_S^0 \tau^\pm \ell^\mp~(\ell=\mu, e)$ using the 711 fb$^{-1}$ and 365 fb$^{-1}$ data samples recorded by the Belle and Belle II detectors, respectively. We use a hadronic $B$-tagging technique, and search for the signal decay in the system recoiling against the fully reconstructed $B$ meson. We find no evidence for $B^0 \rightarrow K_S^0 \tau^\pm \ell^\mp$ decays and set 90\% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions in the range of $[0.8,\,3.6]\times10^{-5}$.

Abstract: We measure the branching fraction and $\it CP$-violating flavor-dependent rate asymmetry of $B^{0} \to \pi^{0} \pi^{0}$ decays reconstructed using the Belle II detector in an electron-positron collision sample containing $387 \times 10^{6}$ $B\overline{B}$ pairs. Using an optimized event selection, we find $126\pm 20$ signal decays in a fit to background-discriminating and flavor-sensitive distributions. The resulting branching fraction is $(1.25 \pm 0.23)\times 10^{-6}$ and the $\it CP$-violating asymmetry is $0.03 \pm 0.30$.

Abstract: We measure the branching fraction of the decay $B^0 \to J/\psi \omega$ using data collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. The data contain $(387 \pm 6) \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ meson pairs produced in energy-asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collisions at the $\Upsilon (4S)$ resonance. The measured branching fraction $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to J/\psi \omega) = \left( 2.16 \pm 0.30 \pm 0.14 \right) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic, is more precise than previous results and constitutes the first observation of the decay with a significance of $6.5$ standard deviations.

Abstract: Using data samples of 983.0~$\rm fb^{-1}$ and 427.9~$\rm fb^{-1}$ accumulated with the Belle and Belle~II detectors operating at the KEKB and SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ colliders, singly Cabibbo-suppressed decays $\Xi_c^{+} \to pK_{S}^{0}$, $\Xi_c^+ \to \Lambda \pi^+$, and $\Xi_c^+ \to \Sigma^{0} \pi^+$ are observed for the first time. The ratios of branching fractions of $\Xi_{c}^{+}\to p K_{S}^{0}$, $\Xi_{c}^{+}\to \Lambda \pi^{+}$, and $\Xi_{c}^{+}\to \Sigma^{0} \pi^{+}$ relative to that of $\Xi_c^+ \to \Xi^- \pi^{+} \pi^{+}$ are measured to be \begin{equation} \frac{{\cal B}(\Xi_c^+ \to pK_S^0)}{{\cal B}(\Xi_c^{+} \to \Xi^{-} \pi^+ \pi^+)} = (2.47 \pm 0.16 \pm 0.07)\% \notag, \end{equation} \begin{equation} \frac{{\cal B}(\Xi_c^+ \to \Lambda \pi^+)}{{\cal B}(\Xi_c^{+} \to \Xi^{-} \pi^+ \pi^+)} = (1.56 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.09)\% \notag, \end{equation} \begin{equation} \frac{{\cal B}(\Xi_c^+ \to \Sigma^0 \pi^+)}{{\cal B}(\Xi_c^{+} \to \Xi^{-} \pi^+ \pi^+)} = (4.13 \pm 0.26 \pm 0.22)\% \notag. \end{equation} Multiplying these values by the branching fraction of the normalization channel, ${\cal B}(\Xi_c^{+} \to \Xi^{-} \pi^+\pi^+) = (2.9 \pm 1.3)\%$, the absolute branching fractions are determined to be \begin{equation} {\cal B}(\Xi_c^{+} \to p K_{S}^{0}) = (7.16 \pm 0.46 \pm 0.20 \pm 3.21) \times 10^{-4} \notag, \end{equation} \begin{equation} {\cal B}(\Xi_c^{+} \to \Lambda \pi^+) = (4.52 \pm 0.41 \pm 0.26 \pm 2.03) \times 10^{-4} \notag, \end{equation} \begin{equation} {\cal B}(\Xi_c^{+} \to \Sigma^0 \pi^+) = (1.20 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.07 \pm 0.54) \times 10^{-3} \notag. \end{equation} The first and second uncertainties above are statistical and systematic, respectively, while the third ones arise from the uncertainty in ${\cal B}(\Xi_c^{+} \to \Xi^{-} \pi^{+} \pi^{+})$., Comment: 21 pages, 5 pages

During the last decade, it was shown that through the process of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) it is possible to up-convert spatial optical vortices that carry longitudinal OAM from the near-infrared into the extreme-ultraviolet (EUV), thereby producing vortices with distinct femtosecond and attosecond structure. In this work we demonstrate theoretically and experimentally the generation of EUV spatiotemporal and spatiospectral vortices using near infrared STOV driving laser pulses. We use analytical expressions for focused STOVs to perform macroscopic calculations of HHG that are directly compared to the experimental results. As STOV beams are not eigenmodes of propagation, we characterize the highly-charged EUV STOVs both in the near and far fields, to show that they represent conjugated spatiotemporal and spatiospectral vortex pairs. Our work provides high-frequency light beams topologically coupled at the nanometer/attosecond scales domains with transverse OAM, that could be suitable to explore electronic dynamics in magnetic materials, chiral media, and nanostructures., Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures

Abstract: We report measurements of the absolute branching fractions $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X)$, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X)$, and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^{\pm} X)$, where the latter is measured for the first time. The results are based on a 121.4\,fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected at the $\Upsilon(10860)$ resonance by the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We reconstruct one $B_s^0$ meson in $e^+e^- \to \Upsilon(10860) \to B_s^{*} \bar{B}_s^{*}$ events and measure yields of $D_s^+$, $D^0$, and $D^+$ mesons in the rest of the event. We obtain $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X) = (68.6 \pm 7.2 \pm 4.0)\%$, $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X) = (21.5 \pm 6.1 \pm 1.8)\%$, and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^{\pm} X) = (12.6 \pm 4.6 \pm 1.3)\%$, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. Averaging with previous Belle measurements gives $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D_s^{\pm} X) = (63.4 \pm 4.5 \pm 2.2)\%$ and $\mathcal{B}(B_s^0 \to D^0/\bar{D}^0 X) = (23.9 \pm 4.1 \pm 1.8)\%$. Abstract: We present measurements of $B \to K{}^{*}(892)\gamma$ decays using $365\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of data collected from 2019 to 2022 by the Belle~II experiment at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The data sample contains $(387 \pm 6) \times 10^6$ $B\overline{B}$ events. We measure branching fractions ($\mathcal{B}$) and $C\!P$ asymmetries ($\mathcal{A}_{C\!P}$) for both $B^{0}\to K{}^{*0}\gamma$ and $B^{+}\to K{}^{*+}\gamma$ decays. The difference in $C\!P$ asymmetries ($\Delta \mathcal{A}_{C\!P}$) and the isospin asymmetry ($\Delta_{0+}$) between these neutral and charged channels are also measured. We obtain the following branching fractions and $C\!P$ asymmetries: $\mathcal{B} (B^{0} \to K{}^{*0}\gamma) = (4.14 \pm 0.10 \pm 0.11 ) \times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{B} (B^{+} \to K{}^{*+}\gamma) = (4.02 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.13 )\times 10^{-5}$, $\mathcal{A}_{C\!P} (B^{0} \to K{}^{*0}\gamma) = (-3.3 \pm 2.3 \pm 0.4 )\%$, and $\mathcal{A}_{C\!P} (B^{+} \to K{}^{*+}\gamma) = (-0.7 \pm 2.9 \pm 0.6 )\%$. The measured difference in $C\!P$ asymmetries is $\Delta \mathcal{A}_{C\!P} = (+2.6 \pm 3.8 \pm 0.7 )\%$, and the measured isospin asymmetry is $\Delta_{0+} = (+5.0 \pm 2.0 \pm 1.5 )\%$. The first uncertainties listed are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are consistent with world-average values and theory predictions.

10. Planetary Nebulae of the Large Magellanic Cloud II: the connection with the progenitors' properties

Abstract: The study of planetary nebulae (PNe) offers the opportunity of evaluating the efficiency of the dust production mechanism during the very late asymptotic giant branch (AGB) phases. We study the relationship between the properties of PNe, particularly the gas and dust content, with the mass and metallicity of the progenitor stars, to understand how dust production works in the late AGB phases, and to shed new light on the physical processes occurring to the stars and the material in their surroundings since the departure from the AGB until the PN phase. We consider a sample of 9 PNe in the Large Magellanic Cloud, 7 out of which characterized by the presence of carbonaceous dust, the remaining 2 with silicates. For these stars the masses and the metallicity of the progenitor stars were estimated. We combine results from stellar evolution and dust formation modelling with those coming from the analysis of the spectral energy distribution, to find the relation between the dust and gas mass of the PNe considered and the The physical properties of carbon-rich PNe are influenced by the mass of the progenitor star. Specifically, the dust-to-gas ratio in the nebula increases from 5x10^{-4}to 6x10^{-3} as the progenitor star's mass increases from approximately 0.9Msun to 2Msun. This change is partly influenced by the effective temperature of the PNe, and it occurs because higher-mass carbon stars are more efficient at producing dust. Consequently, as the progenitor's mass increases, the gas mass of the PNe decreases, since the larger amounts of dust lead to greater effects from radiation pressure, which pushes the gas outwards. No meaningful conclusions can be drawn by the study of the PNe with silicate-type dust, because the sub-sample is made up of 2 PNe only, one of which is almost dust-free., Comment: accepted for publication on Astronomy and Astrophysics. 9 pages, 6 figures

Abstract: We present a study of atmospheric disturbances at Jezero Crater, Mars, using ground-based measurements of surface pressure by the Perseverance rover in combination with orbital images from the Mars Express and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter missions. The study starts at Ls $\sim$ 13.3{\deg} in MY36 (March 6th, 2021) and extends up to Ls $\sim$ 30.3{\deg} in MY37 (February 28th, 2023). We focus on the characterization of the major atmospheric phenomena at synoptic and planetary-scales. These are the thermal tides (measured up to the sixth component), long-period pressure oscillations (periods > 1 sol), the Aphelion Cloud Belt, and the occasional development of regional dust storms over Jezero. We present the seasonal evolution of the amplitudes and phases of the thermal tides and their relation with the atmospheric dust content (optical depth). Three regional dust storms and one polar storm extending over Jezero produced an increase in the diurnal and semidiurnal amplitudes but resulted in inverse responses in their phases. We show that the primary regular wave activity is due to baroclinic disturbances with periods of 2-4 sols and amplitudes $\sim$ 1-15 Pa increasing with dust content, in good agreement with theoretical predictions by model calculations. The spacecraft images show a number of arc-shaped, spiral and irregular cyclonic vortices, traced by dust and clouds at the edge of the North Polar Cap, that could be behind some of the pressure oscillations measured at Jezero.

12. Shedding Light on Naked Singularities

Abstract: Electromagnetic waves propagating in the background provided by a spacetime hosting a strong curvature, naked singularity, are fully studied. The analysis is performed not only in the realm of geometrical optics -- which, not surprisingly, proves to be inadequate in the strong field regime characterizing the vicinity of the singularity -- but also in the physical one in which the field amplitudes must necessarily be incorporated into the description. In addition to the expected divergent outcome with regard to the field amplitudes and power flux as the waves approach the singularity, we found a number of regular (bounded) solutions which seem to coexist with the unbridled effects of the spacetime curvature. In some of them, the singularity operates as a perfect mirror reflecting the surrounding fields. Strikingly, other solutions exhibit a perfectly well behaved, bounded power flux as they propagate towards the singularity, suggesting thus the possibility of having electromagnetic energy transference through it., Comment: 7 pages, 2 figures

13. ParaRev: Building a dataset for Scientific Paragraph Revision annotated with revision instruction

In this paper, we explore the impact of shifting from sentence-level to paragraph-level scope for the task of scientific text revision. The paragraph level definition of the task allows for more meaningful changes, and is guided by detailed revision instructions rather than general ones. To support this task, we introduce ParaRev, the first dataset of revised scientific paragraphs with an evaluation subset manually annotated with revision instructions. Abstract: As AI systems become more capable, widely deployed, and increasingly autonomous in critical areas such as cybersecurity, biological research, and healthcare, ensuring their safety and alignment with human values is paramount. Machine unlearning -- the ability to selectively forget or suppress specific types of knowledge -- has shown promise for privacy and data removal tasks, which has been the primary focus of existing research. More recently, its potential application to AI safety has gained attention. In this paper, we identify key limitations that prevent unlearning from serving as a comprehensive solution for AI safety, particularly in managing dual-use knowledge in sensitive domains like cybersecurity and chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) safety. In these contexts, information can be both beneficial and harmful, and models may combine seemingly harmless information for harmful purposes -- unlearning this information could strongly affect beneficial uses. We provide an overview of inherent constraints and open problems, including the broader side effects of unlearning dangerous knowledge, as well as previously unexplored tensions between unlearning and existing safety mechanisms. Finally, we investigate challenges related to evaluation, robustness, and the preservation of safety features during unlearning. By mapping these limitations and open challenges, we aim to guide future research toward realistic applications of unlearning within a broader AI safety framework, acknowledging its limitations and highlighting areas where alternative approaches may be required.

15. Chiral and isospin breaking in the 2-flavour Schwinger Model

Abstract: The Schwinger model with two massive fermions is a non-trivial theory for which no analytical solution is known. The strong coupling limit of the theory allows for different semiclassical approximations to extract properties of its low-lying spectrum. In particular, analytical results exist for the fermion condensate, the fermion mass dependence of the pseudoscalar meson mass or its decay constant. These approximations, nonetheless, are not able to quantitatively predict isospin breaking effects in the light spectrum, for example. In this paper we use lattice simulations to test various analytical predictions, and study isospin breaking effects from non-degenerate quark masses. We also introduce a low-energy effective field theory based on a non-linear sigma model with a dilaton field, which leads to the correct fermion mass dependence of the pion mass, the correct $\sigma$-to-$\pi$ mass ratio and a prediction of the isospin breaking effects, which we test numerically., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

Abstract: The Cygnus-X complex is a massive, nearby (1.4 kpc) star-forming region with several OB associations. As part of the Cygnus Allscale Survey of Chemistry and Dynamical Environments (CASCADE) program, we carried out 3.6 millimeter (mm) continuum and spectral line high-resolution observations ($\sim$ 3 - 4$''$) toward DR18, covering several molecular species with the Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) and the Institut de Radioastronomie Millim\'etrique (IRAM) 30m telescope. In addition, multi-wavelength archival datasets were used to provide a comprehensive analysis of the region. A comparison of the 3.6mm and 6 cm continuum emission confirms that a B2 star (DR18-05) shapes the cometary HII region in the DR18 cavity, with ionized gas escaping toward the OB2 association. On the other hand, the extended 3.6mm and 6 cm continuum emission are likely to trace photoevaporating ionized gas from ultraviolet radiation from the Cyg OB2 association, not from DR18-05. The shell structure around DR18-05 indicates photodissociation regions (PDRs) formed by the expanding HII region and photo-erosion from DR18-05 and OB2 stars. We also identified 18 compact cores with N$_2$H$^+$ emission, half of which are gravitationally bound and mostly located in colder regions behind the PDRs. The SiO emission is found only in PDRs, with narrow-line widths ( 0.8 - 2.0 km s$^{-1}$) and lower abundances (X(SiO) $\sim$ 5$\times$10$^{-11}$ - 1$\times$10$^{-10}$). Comparing with the UV irradiated shock models, we suggest that the SiO emission partially encompassing the HII region arises from the molecular gas region, marginally compressed by low-velocity shocks with $\sim$ 5 km s$^{-1}$, irradiated by external UV radiation (G$_{\rm 0} \sim 10^{2} - 10^{3}$), as they traverse through a medium with $n_{\rm H} \sim 10^{4}$ to 10$^5$ cm$^{-3}$., Comment: 25 pages, 21 figures, and 4 tables. Abstract: We present 50-fs, single-shot measurements of the x-ray thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) from copper foils that have been shocked via nanosecond laser-ablation up to pressures above 135~GPa. We hence deduce the x-ray Debye-Waller (DW) factor, providing a temperature measurement. The targets were laser-shocked with the DiPOLE 100-X laser at the High Energy Density (HED) endstation of the European X-ray Free-Electron Laser (EuXFEL). Single x-ray pulses, with a photon energy of 18 keV, were scattered from the samples and recorded on Varex detectors. Despite the targets being highly textured (as evinced by large variations in the elastic scattering), and with such texture changing upon compression, the absolute intensity of the azimuthally averaged inelastic TDS between the Bragg peaks is largely insensitive to these changes, and, allowing for both Compton scattering and the low-level scattering from a sacrificial ablator layer, provides a reliable measurement of $T/\Theta_D^2$, where $\Theta_D$ is the Debye temperature. We compare our results with the predictions of the SESAME 3336 and LEOS 290 equations of state for copper, and find good agreement within experimental errors. 19. Testing disc reprocessing models for AGN optical variability by comparison of X-ray and optical power spectra of NGC 4395

Abstract: It is generally thought that AGN optical variability is produced, at least in part, by reprocessing of central X-rays by a surrounding accretion disc, resulting in wavelength-dependent lags between bands. Any good model of AGN optical variability should explain not only these lags, but also the overall pattern of variability as quantified by the power spectral density (PSD). Here we present $\sim$daily g'-band monitoring of the low-mass AGN NGC\,4395 over 3 years. Together with previous TESS and GTC/HiPERCAM observations we produce an optical PSD covering an unprecedented frequency range of $\sim7$ decades allowing excellent determination of PSD parameters. The PSD is well fitted by a bending power law with low-frequency slope $\alpha_{L} = 1.0 \pm 0.2$, high-frequency slope $2.1^{+0.2}_{-0.4}$ and bend timescale $3.0^{+6.6}_{-1.7}\,$\,d. This timescale is close to that derived previously from a damped random walk (DRW) model fitted to just the TESS observations, although $\alpha_{L}$ is too steep to be consistent with a DRW. We compare the observed PSD with one made from light curves synthesized assuming reprocessing of X-rays, as observed by \xmm and Swift, in a disc defined by the observed lags. The simulated PSD is also well described by a bending power law but with a bend two decades higher in frequency. We conclude that the large-amplitude optical variations seen on long-timescales are not due to disc reprocessing but require a second source of variability whose origin is unknown but could be propagating disc accretion rate variations.

21. Slow spatial migration can help eradicate cooperative antimicrobial resistance in time-varying environments

Abstract: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global threat and combating its spread is of paramount importance. AMR often results from a cooperative behaviour with shared protection against drugs. Microbial communities generally evolve in volatile environments and spatial structures. Migration, fluctuations, and environmental variability thus have significant impacts on AMR, whose maintenance in static environments is generally promoted by migration. Here, we demonstrate that this picture changes dramatically in time-fluctuating spatially structured environments. To this end, we consider a two-dimensional metapopulation model consisting of demes in which drug-resistant and sensitive cells evolve in a time-changing environment in the presence of a toxin against which protection can be shared. Cells migrate between neighbouring demes and hence connect them. When the environment varies neither too quickly nor too slowly, the dynamics is characterised by bottlenecks causing fluctuation-driven local extinctions, a mechanism countered by migration that rescues AMR. Through simulations and mathematical analysis, we investigate how migration and environmental variability influence the probability of resistance eradication. We determine the near-optimal conditions for the fluctuation-driven AMR eradication, and show that slow but non-zero migration speeds up the clearance of resistance and can enhance its eradication probability. 22. Evaluation of Rail Decarbonization Alternatives: Framework and Application

Abstract: The Northwestern University Freight Rail Infrastructure and Energy Network Decarbonization (NUFRIEND) framework is a comprehensive industry-oriented tool for simulating the deployment of new energy technologies including biofuels, e-fuels, battery-electric, and hydrogen locomotives. By classifying fuel types into two categories based on deployment requirements, the associated optimal charging/fueling facility location and sizing problem are solved with a five-step framework. Life cycle analyses (LCA) and techno-economic analyses (TEA) are used to estimate carbon reduction, capital investments, cost of carbon reduction, and operational impacts, enabling sensitivity analysis with operational and technological parameters. The framework is illustrated on lower-carbon drop-in fuels as well as battery-electric technology deployments for US Eastern and Western Class I railroad networks. Drop-in fuel deployments are modeled as admixtures with diesel in existing locomotives, while battery-electric deployments are shown for varying technology penetration levels and locomotive ranges. When mixed in a 50 percent ratio with diesel, results show biodiesel's capacity to reduce emissions at 36 percent with a cost of 0.13 USD per kilogram of CO2 reduced, while e-fuels offer a 50 percent emissions reduction potential at a cost of 0.22 USD per kilogram of CO2 reduced. Battery-electric results for 50 percent deployment over all ton-miles highlight the value of future innovations in battery energy densities as scenarios assuming 800-mile range locomotives show an estimated emissions reduction of 46 percent with a cost of 0.06 USD per kilogram of CO2 reduced, compared to 16 percent emissions reduction at a cost of 0.11 USD per kilogram of CO2 reduced for 400-mile range locomotives., Comment: 29 pages, 17 figures. Abstract: Continuous gravitational waves (CWs) emission from neutron stars carries information about their internal structure and equation of state, and it can provide tests of General Relativity. We present a search for CWs from a set of 45 known pulsars in the first part of the fourth LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA observing run, known as O4a. We conducted a targeted search for each pulsar using three independent analysis methods considering the single-harmonic and the dual-harmonic emission models. We find no evidence of a CW signal in O4a data for both models and set upper limits on the signal amplitude and on the ellipticity, which quantifies the asymmetry in the neutron star mass distribution. For the single-harmonic emission model, 29 targets have the upper limit on the amplitude below the theoretical spin-down limit. The lowest upper limit on the amplitude is $6.4\!\times\!10^{-27}$ for the young energetic pulsar J0537-6910, while the lowest constraint on the ellipticity is $8.8\!\times\!10^{-9}$ for the bright nearby millisecond pulsar J0437-4715. Additionally, for a subset of 16 targets we performed a narrowband search that is more robust regarding the emission model, with no evidence of a signal. 24. Predicting Barge Presence and Quantity on Inland Waterways using Vessel Tracking Data: A Machine Learning Approach

Abstract: This study presents a machine learning approach to predict the number of barges transported by vessels on inland waterways using tracking data from the Automatic Identification System (AIS). While AIS tracks the location of tug and tow vessels, it does not monitor the presence or number of barges transported by those vessels. Understanding the number and types of barges conveyed along river segments, between ports, and at ports is crucial for estimating the quantities of freight transported on the nation's waterways. This insight is also valuable for waterway management and infrastructure operations impacting areas such as targeted dredging operations, and data-driven resource allocation. Labeled sample data was generated using observations from traffic cameras located along key river segments and matched to AIS data records. A sample of 164 vessels representing up to 42 barge convoys per vessel was used for model development. The methodology involved first predicting barge presence and then predicting barge quantity. Features derived from the AIS data included speed measures, vessel characteristics, turning measures, and interaction terms. For predicting barge presence, the AdaBoost model achieved an F1 score of 0.932. For predicting barge quantity, the Random Forest combined with an AdaBoost ensemble model achieved an F1 score of 0.886. Bayesian optimization was used for hyperparameter tuning. By advancing predictive modeling for inland waterways, this study offers valuable insights for transportation planners and organizations, which require detailed knowledge of traffic volumes, including the flow of commodities, their destinations, and the tonnage moving in and out of ports.

Abstract: Context: The C-19 stellar stream is the most metal-poor stream known to date. While its width and velocity dispersion indicate a dwarf galaxy origin, its metallicity spread and abundance patterns are more similar to those of globular clusters (GCs). If it is indeed of GC origin, its extremely low metallicity ([Fe/H]=-3.4, estimated from giant stars) implies that these stellar systems can form out of gas that is as extremely poor in metals as this. Previously, only giant stream stars were observed spectroscopically, although the majority of stream stars are unevolved stars. Aims: We pushed the spectroscopic observations to the subgiant branch stars ($G\approx 20$) in order to consolidate the chemical and dynamical properties of C-19. Methods: We used the high-efficiency spectrograph X-shooter fed by the ESO 8.2 m VLT telescope to observe 15 candidate subgiant C-19 members. The spectra were used to measure radial velocities and to determine chemical abundances using the \mygi\ code. Results; We developed a likelihood model that takes metallicity and radial velocities into account. We conclude that 12 stars are likely members of C-19, while 3 stars (S05, S12, and S13) are likely contaminants. When these 3 stars are excluded, our model implies a mean metallicity $\rm \langle [Fe/H]\rangle = -3.1\pm 0.1$, the mean radial velocity is $\langle v_r\rangle = -192\pm3$ kms$^{-1}$, and the velocity dispersion is $\sigma_{vr} = 5.9^{+3.6}_{-5.9}$ kms$^{-1}$. This all agrees within errors with previous studies. The A(Mg) of a sample of 15 C-19 members, including 6 giant stars, shows a standard deviation of 0.44 dex, and the mean uncertainty on Mg is 0.25 dex. Conclusions: Our preferred interpretation of the current data is that C-19 is a disrupted GC. We cannot completely rule out the possibility that the GC could have belonged to a dwarf galaxy that contained more metal-rich stars, however. This scenario would explain the radial velocity members at higher metallicity, as well as the width and velocity dispersion of the stream. In either case, a GC formed out of gas as poor in metals as these stars seems necessary to explain the existence of C-19. Abstract: Using the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), the gravitationally lensed rings around the supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in Messier 87 (M87) and Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*) have now been successfully imaged at a resolution under 10 gravitational radii (R$_{\rm g}$ $ = \rm{GM/c^2}$). To expand studies beyond M87 and Sgr A*, we have constructed the Event Horizon and Environs (ETHER) sample, a comprehensive database encompassing approximately 3.15 million SMBH mass estimates, $\sim$ 20,000 Very-Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) radio flux densities, and $\sim$ 36,000 hard X-ray flux densities. This database is designed to identify and optimize target selection for the EHT and its upgrades on the ground and in space. We have identified a Gold Sample (GS) of nearby low-luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) within it that are ideal for studying jet bases and potentially imaging black hole shadows. We observed 27 of these AGNs using the EHT from 2022 to 2024, providing an opportunity to resolve and image accretion flows and jets at resolutions of $\leq$ 100 R$_{\rm g}$. Only a few SMBHs have sufficiently high enough flux density to be imaged at scales of $\leq$ 50 R$_{\rm g}$ with the present EHT. Among these are M87, Sgr A*, NGC4594 (Sombrero/M104), NGC4261, and NGC4374 (Messier 84/M84). Of these, NGC4261, Sombrero, and M84 have been observed and/or are scheduled for deep imaging with EHT+ALMA from 2023 to 2025. Sombrero, NGC4261, M84, NGC4278, and NGC5232 are clearly detected in our EHT+ALMA observations in 2022, indicating that the 230 GHz flux density from the accretion flows is significantly high. Abstract: Cocoa is a multi-billion-dollar industry but research on improving yields through pollination remains limited. New embedded hardware and AI-based data analysis is advancing information on cocoa flower visitors, their identity and implications for yields. We present the first cocoa flower visitor dataset containing 5,792 images of Ceratopogonidae, Formicidae, Aphididae, Araneae, and Encyrtidae, and 1,082 background cocoa flower images. This dataset was curated from 23 million images collected over two years by embedded cameras in cocoa plantations in Hainan province, China. We exemplify the use of the dataset with different sizes of YOLOv8 models and by progressively increasing the background image ratio in the training set to identify the best-performing model. The medium-sized YOLOv8 model achieved the best results with 8% background images (F1 Score of 0.71, mAP50 of 0.70). Overall, this dataset is useful to compare the performance of deep learning model architectures on images with low contrast images and difficult detection targets. 29. Trading Off Energy Storage and Payload -- An Analytical Model for Freight Train Configuration

Abstract: To support planning of alternative fuel technology (e.g., battery-electric locomotives) deployment for decarbonizing non-electrified freight rail, we develop a convex optimization formulation with a closed-form solution to determine the optimal number of energy storage tender cars in a train. The formulation shares a similar structure to an Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) model. For given market characteristics, cost forecasts, and technology parameters, our model captures the trade-offs between inventory carrying costs associated with trip times (including delays due to charging/refueling) and ordering costs associated with train dispatch and operation (energy, amortized equipment, and labor costs). To illustrate the framework, we find the optimal number of battery-electric energy tender cars in 22,501 freight markets (origin-destination pairs and commodities) for U.S. Class I railroads. The results display heterogeneity in optimal configurations with lighter, yet more time-sensitive shipments (e.g., intermodal) utilizing more battery tender cars. For heavier commodities (e.g., coal) with lower holding costs, single battery tender car configurations are generally optimal. 30. The lack of influence of the scalar hair on the DC conductivity

Abstract: Recently obtained black hole solutions within the framework of beyond-Horndeski theories, which have the advantage of featuring primary hair, are generalized in the presence of two axionic fields. In order to induce a momentum dissipation, the axionic field solutions are homogeneously distributed along the horizon coordinates of the planar base manifold. We show that, despite the explicit dependence of the scalar field and the metric on the primary hair, this latter does not directly affect the calculation of transport properties. Its influence is indirect, modifying the horizon location, but the transport properties themselves do not explicitly depend on the hair parameter. We take a step further and show that even within a more general class of beyond-Horndeski theories, where the scalar field depends linearly on the hair parameter, the scalar hair still has no direct impact on the DC conductivity. Abstract: Although the search for quantum many-body phenomena in magnetic materials has a strong focus on highly frustrated systems, even unfrustrated quantum magnets show a multitude of unconventional phenomena in their spin excitation spectra. YbBr$_3$ is an excellent realization of the $S = 1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice, and we have performed detailed spectroscopic experiments with both unpolarized and polarized neutrons at all applied magnetic fields up to saturation. We observe extensive excitation continua, which cause strong renormalization and the decay of single magnons at higher fields, while coherent features include field-induced ``shadows'' of the single magnons and the spectacular emergence of a roton-like excitation. To guide and interpret our experiments, we performed systematic calculations by the method of cylinder matrix-product states that provide quantitative agreement with the neutron scattering data and a qualitative benchmark for the spectral signatures of strong quantum fluctuations even in the absence of magnetic frustration., Comment: 7+8 pages, 4+7 figures

Abstract: The o1 model series is trained with large-scale reinforcement learning to reason using chain of thought. These advanced reasoning capabilities provide new avenues for improving the safety and robustness of our models. In particular, our models can reason about our safety policies in context when responding to potentially unsafe prompts, through deliberative alignment. This leads to state-of-the-art performance on certain benchmarks for risks such as generating illicit advice, choosing stereotyped responses, and succumbing to known jailbreaks. Training models to incorporate a chain of thought before answering has the potential to unlock substantial benefits, while also increasing potential risks that stem from heightened intelligence. Our results underscore the need for building robust alignment methods, extensively stress-testing their efficacy, and maintaining meticulous risk management protocols. This report outlines the safety work carried out for the OpenAI o1 and OpenAI o1-mini models, including safety evaluations, external red teaming, and Preparedness Framework evaluations.

Abstract: We present a study of low-concentration Zn (II) impurities in L-Alanine Single Crystal (ZNLA) employing resonant Raman scattering and optical absorption spectroscopy. By analyzing the relative integrated intensity of the selective vibrational modes, we observe a resonant enhancement of Raman-active modes near the UV absorption band, associated with vibrations of the amino and carboxyl groups in ZNLA. These findings suggest that zinc cations occupy an interstitial position coordinated by amino and carboxyl groups. Also, ZNLA single crystal shows a strong antiresonance behavior for some modes associated with amino and carboxyl groups. The antiresonance model in the cross-section allowed the estimation of the bandgap to be 3.8 eV, which perfectly agrees with the direct bandgap obtained from the absorption spectrum (3.75 eV). Finally, our approach proves to be useful for detecting interactions between transition metal ion impurities and intramolecular structures in other transition metal-doped organic amino acid systems.

Abstract: In this paper we characterize different fractional caloric capacities with fractional parabolic $\text{BMO}$ and $\text{Lip}_\alpha$ normalization conditions. That is, we characterize geometrically removable sets for functions solving the fractional heat equation under fractional parabolic $\text{BMO}$ or $\text{Lip}_\alpha$ constraints. Ultimately, we compare all capacities to a certain parabolic Hausdorff content.

Abstract: Magnetic fields are ubiquitous across different physical systems of current interest; from the early Universe, compact astrophysical objects and heavy-ion collisions to condensed matter systems. A proper treatment of the effects produced by magnetic fields during the dynamical evolution of these systems, can help to understand observables that otherwise show a puzzling behavior. Furthermore, when these fields are comparable to or stronger than \Lambda_QCD, they serve as excellent probes to help elucidate the physics of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions of temperature and density. In this work we provide a comprehensive review of recent developments on the description of QED and QCD systems where magnetic field driven effects are important. These include the modification of meson static properties such as masses and form factors, the chiral magnetic effect, the description of anomalous transport coefficients, superconductivity in extreme magnetic fields, the properties of neutron stars, the evolution of heavy-ion collisions, as well as effects on the QCD phase diagram. We describe recent theory and phenomenological developments using effective models as well as LQCD methods. 40. Multi-object operational tasks for measurement incompatibility

Abstract: We introduce multi-object operational tasks for measurement incompatibility in the form of multi-object quantum subchannel discrimination and exclusion games with prior information, where a player can simultaneously harness the resources contained within both a quantum state and a set of measurements. We show that any fully or partially resourceful pair of objects is useful for a suitably chosen multi-object subchannel discrimination and exclusion game with prior information. The advantage provided by a fully or partially resourceful object against all possible fully free objects in such a game can be quantified in a multiplicative manner by the resource quantifiers of generalised robustness and weight of resource for discrimination and exclusion games, respectively. These results hold for arbitrary properties of quantum states as well as for arbitrary properties of sets of measurements closed under classical pre and post-processing and, consequently, include measurement incompatibility as a particular case. 41. Mamba2D: A Natively Multi-Dimensional State-Space Model for Vision Tasks

Abstract: State-Space Models (SSMs) have recently emerged as a powerful and efficient alternative to the long-standing transformer architecture. However, existing SSM conceptualizations retain deeply rooted biases from their roots in natural language processing. This constrains their ability to appropriately model the spatially-dependent characteristics of visual inputs. In this paper, we address these limitations by re-deriving modern selective state-space techniques, starting from a natively multidimensional formulation. Currently, prior works attempt to apply natively 1D SSMs to 2D data (i.e. images) by relying on arbitrary combinations of 1D scan directions to capture spatial dependencies. In contrast, Mamba2D improves upon this with a single 2D scan direction that factors in both dimensions of the input natively, effectively modelling spatial dependencies when constructing hidden states. Mamba2D shows comparable performance to prior adaptations of SSMs for vision tasks, on standard image classification evaluations with the ImageNet-1K dataset.

42. Meaurement of spin vs. TKE of $^{144}$Ba produced in spontaneous fission of $^{252}$Cf

Abstract: We measure the average spin of $^{144}$Ba, a common fragment produced in $^{252}$Cf(sf), as a function of the total kinetic energy (TKE). We combined for the first time a twin Frisch-gridded ionization chamber with a world-class $\gamma$-ray spectrometer that was designed to measure high-multiplicity $\gamma$-ray events, Gammasphere. The chamber, loaded with a $^{252}$Cf(sf) source, provides a fission trigger, the TKE of the fragments, the approximate fragment masses, and the polar angle of the fission axis. Gammasphere provides the total $\gamma$-ray yield, fragment identification through the tagging of decay $\gamma$ rays, and the feeding of rotational bands in the fragments. We determine the dependence of the average spin of $^{144}$Ba on the fragments' TKE by correlating the fragment properties with the distribution of discrete levels that are fed. We find that the average spin only changes by about $0.5$ $\hbar$ across the TKE range of 158-203 MeV. The virtual independence of the spin on TKE suggests that spin is not solely generated through the statistical excitation of rotational modes, and more complex mechanisms are required., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. 43. A Methodological Framework for Solving Einsteins Equations in Axially Symmetric Spacetimes

Abstract: This work presents a novel methodology for deriving stationary and axially symmetric solutions to Einstein field equations using the 1+3 tetrad formalism. This approach reformulates the Einstein equations into first order scalar equations, enabling systematic resolution in vacuum scenarios. We derive two distinct solutions in polar and hyperbolic geometries by assuming the separability of a key metric function. Our method reproduces well known solutions such as Schwarzschild and Kerr metrics and extends the case of rotating spacetimes to hyperbolic configurations. Additionally, we explore the role of Killing tensors in enabling separable metric components, simplifying analyses of geodesic motion and physical phenomena. This framework demonstrates robustness and adaptability for addressing the complexities of axially symmetric spacetimes, paving the way for further applications to Kerr like solutions in General Relativity.

44. Assessing treatment effects in observational data with missing confounders: A comparative study of practical doubly-robust and traditional missing data methods

Abstract: In pharmacoepidemiology, safety and effectiveness are frequently evaluated using readily available administrative and electronic health records data. In these settings, detailed confounder data are often not available in all data sources and therefore missing on a subset of individuals. Multiple imputation (MI) and inverse-probability weighting (IPW) are go-to analytical methods to handle missing data and are dominant in the biomedical literature. Doubly-robust methods, which are consistent under fewer assumptions, can be more efficient with respect to mean-squared error. We discuss two practical-to-implement doubly-robust estimators, generalized raking and inverse probability-weighted targeted maximum likelihood estimation (TMLE), which are both currently under-utilized in biomedical studies. We compare their performance to IPW and MI in a detailed numerical study for a variety of synthetic data-generating and missingness scenarios, including scenarios with rare outcomes and a high missingness proportion. Further, we consider plasmode simulation studies that emulate the complex data structure of a large electronic health records cohort in order to compare anti-depressant therapies in a rare-outcome setting where a key confounder is prone to more than 50\% missingness. Abstract: Observational and/or astrophysical systematics modulating the observed number of luminous tracers can constitute a major limitation in the cosmological exploitation of surveys of the large scale structure of the universe. Part of this limitation arises on top of our ignorance on how such systematics actually impact the observed galaxy/quasar fields. In this work we develop a generic, hybrid model for an arbitrary number of systematics that may modulate observations in both an additive and a multiplicative way. This model allows us devising a novel algorithm that addresses the identification and correction for either additive and/or multiplicative contaminants. We test this model on galaxy mocks and systematics templates inspired from data of the third data release of the {\it Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey} (J-PLUS). We find that our method clearly outperforms standard methods that assume either an additive or multiplicative character for all contaminants in scenarios where both characters are actually acting on the observed data. In simpler scenarios where only an additive or multiplicative imprint on observations is considered, our hybrid method does not lie far behind the corresponding simplified, additive/multiplicative methods. Nonetheless, in scenarios of mild/low impact of systematics, we find that our hybrid approach converges towards the standard method that assumes additive contamination, as predicted by our model describing systematics. Our methodology also allows for the estimation of biases induced by systematics residuals on different angular scales and under different observational configurations, although these predictions necessarily restrict to the subset of {\em known/identified} potential systematics, and say nothing about ``unknown unknowns" possibly impacting the data., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, to be submitted to the Open Journal for Astrophysics. Abstract: The {\it Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey} (J-PLUS) is a {\it spectro-photometric} survey covering about 3,000~deg$^2$ in its third data release (DR3), and containing about 300,000 galaxies with high quality ({\it odds}$>0.8$) photometric redshifts (hereafter photo-$z$s). We use this galaxy sample to conduct a tomographic study of the counts and redshift angular fluctuations under Gaussian shells sampling the redshift range $z\in[0.05,0.25]$. We confront the angular power spectra of these observables measured under shells centered on 11 different redshifts with theoretical expectations derived from a linear Boltzmann code ({\tt ARFCAMB}). Overall we find that J-PLUS DR3 data are well reproduced by our linear, simplistic model. We obtain that counts (or density) angular fluctuations (hereafter ADF) are very sensitive to the linear galaxy bias $b_g(z)$, although weakly sensitive to radial peculiar velocities of the galaxy field, while suffering from systematics residuals for $z>0.15$. Angular redshift fluctuations (ARF), instead, show higher sensitivity to radial peculiar velocities and also higher sensitivity to the average uncertainty in photo-$z$s ($\sigma_{\rm Err}$), with no obvious impact from systematics. For $z<0.15$ both ADF and ARF agree on measuring a monotonically increasing linear bias varying from $b_g(z=0.05)\simeq 0.9\pm 0.06$ up to $b_g(z=0.15)\simeq 1.5\pm 0.05$, while, by first time, providing consistent measurements of $\sigma_{\rm Err}(z)\sim 0.014$ that are $\sim 40~\%$ higher than estimates from the photo-$z$ code {\tt LePhare}, ($\sigma_{\rm Err}^{\rm LePhare}=0.010$). 47. Fractional Skyrmion Tubes in Chiral-Interfaced Three-Dimensional Magnetic Nanowires

Abstract: Magnetic skyrmions are chiral spin textures with rich physics and great potential for unconventional computing. Typically, skyrmions form in bulk crystals with reduced symmetry or ultrathin film multilayers involving heavy metals. Here, we demonstrate the formation of fractional Bloch skyrmion tubes at room temperature by 3D printing ferromagnetic double-helix nanowires with two regions of opposite chirality. Using X-ray microscopy and micromagnetic simulations, we show that the coexistence of vortex and anti-parallel spin states induces the formation of fractional skyrmion tubes at zero magnetic fields, minimising the energy cost of breaking the coupling between geometric and magnetic chirality. We also demonstrate control over zero-field states, including pure vortex, or mixed skyrmion-vortex states, highlighting the magnetic reconfigurability of these 3D nanowires. This work shows how interfacing chiral geometries at the nanoscale can enable advanced forms of topological spintronics.

Abstract: The iterative bleaching extends multiplexity (IBEX) Knowledge-Base is a central portal for researchers adopting IBEX and related 2D and 3D immunofluorescence imaging methods. The design of the Knowledge-Base is modeled after efforts in the open-source software community and includes three facets: a development platform (GitHub), static website, and service for data archiving. The Knowledge-Base facilitates the practice of open science throughout the research life cycle by providing validation data for recommended and non-recommended reagents, e.g., primary and secondary antibodies. In addition to reporting negative data, the Knowledge-Base empowers method adoption and evolution by providing a venue for sharing protocols, videos, datasets, software, and publications. A dedicated discussion forum fosters a sense of community among researchers while addressing questions not covered in published manuscripts. Together, scientists from around the world are advancing scientific discovery at a faster pace, reducing wasted time and effort, and instilling greater confidence in the resulting data.

Abstract: The paper introduces a novel approach for estimating soil moisture in vegetated surfaces, specifically focusing on sugarcane crops throughout various growth stages in agriculture applications. While existing models typically address bare soil scenarios, this model utilizes data from P-, L-, and C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) to estimate soil moisture. The semi-empirical Dubois model forms the basis of the proposed model, which has been adapted to accommodate multiband operation and crop height variations. Synthetic datasets are generated using the adjusted model to train two neural networks incorporated into the overall model. Additionally, a linear expression for estimating crop height is integrated into the model. The model is validated in an Experimental Site at the School of Agricultural Engineering, UNICAMP, and an independent area at the Sugarcane Technology Center in Piracicaba, Brazil. The model utilizes a multiband drone-borne SAR system with a 3-meter image resolution and radiometric accuracy of 0.5 dB. Abstract: Leaf-cutting ants, notorious for causing defoliation in commercial forest plantations, significantly contribute to biomass and productivity losses, impacting forest producers in Brazil. These ants construct complex underground nests, highlighting the need for advanced monitoring tools to extract subsurface information across large areas. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) systems provide a powerful solution for this challenge. This study presents the results of electromagnetic simulations designed to detect leaf-cutting ant nests in industrial forests. The simulations modeled nests with 6 to 100 underground chambers, offering insights into their radar signatures. Following these simulations, a field study was conducted using a drone-borne SAR operating in the P-band. A helical flight pattern was employed to generate high-resolution ground tomography of a commercial eucalyptus forest. A convolutional neural network (CNN) was implemented to detect ant nests and estimate their sizes from tomographic data, delivering remarkable results. The method achieved an ant nest detection accuracy of 100%, a false alarm rate of 0%, and an average error of 21% in size estimation.
