2. Biased News in the 1972 Campaign: A Multi-Media Analysis.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to present systematic findings concerning bias in TV news coverage of the 1972 presidential campaign and to describe the kinds of coverage that the candidates and parties received during the campaign. News about the election was analyzed from weekday network evening news programs, AP day and night wire coverage, a daily newspaper that endorsed McGovern ("Washington Post"), and a daily that endorsed Nixon ("Chicago Tribune"). The first section of the document is an introduction to the study. The second section is a listing of the findings of the study. The third section examines perceptions of bias in the news including bases of perceptions of bias in television news, partisan choice and perceived bias, and cognitions about news and perceived bias. The final section is a discussion of the findings: structural bias was clearly evident in much of the analysis; each candidate benefited from the way sources of news were handled; if either candidate gained from issue coverage during the 1972 election, it was Nixon; issues were covered differently on television and in newspapers; and perceptions of biased TV news coverage had a variety of effects on voting behavior and attitudes about the medium. Abstract

This paper presents a conceptual analysis of bias and outlines the complexity and subtlety of the questions engulfing bias by sorting out views of bias that have been implicit in debates about the media, assessing the scientific value of these competing views in identifying and understanding bias in the media, offering an alternative view which is more useful in scientific investigation, suggesting where and under what conditions bias might be likely to occur in the mass media, providing some analytic concerns of news reports using the conceptual and theoretical framework that is developed, and suggesting some implications and consequences that politically biased media may hold for American society. Much of the analysis, intended to represent results which are general, concerns bias in television news coverage, although other media are mentioned as appropriate. A list of references is included. Abstract

This book analyzes the coverage of the 1972 presidential election campaign by the three major television networks, focusing on weekday-evening news broadcasts from 10 July to 6 November 1972. The study's two objectives are to identify and explain discernible patterns of campaign news coverage and to show how these patterns relate to the candidates, issues, parties, and campaign activities, how they relate to each of the networks, and how they persist or vary as the campaign progresses. Chapter topics include considerations for the study's design; individual network coverage of the candidates, the issues, and the political parties during the 1972 campaign; ratings and themes as alternative techniques of analysis; specific issues and sources in news coverage; and conclusions from the study. Thirty-six tables of data illustrate the text. (RL)

5. Communication Media and Perceptions of Undocumented Immigrants: The Case of San Diego.

Abstract

A telephone survey of 500 adults in the San Diego, California, area was conducted to examine the role of mass media in shaping views of the respondents toward undocumented immigrants from Mexico. The sample, designed to reflect all adults in the area, was distorted somewhat by a refusal rate of approximately 30%. The results showed that the most significant contribution of media coverage concerning undocumented immigrants was to increase levels of information about Mexico and about the immigrants. Print media were found to have the greatest influence on increasing information, discussion was the next most influential, and television programing was the least influential. Although exposure to media was associated with level of information, the media apparently had no influence on the content of either perceptions or attitudes about immigrants. The findings suggest that the media increased both information and cognitive consistency in relation to undocumented immigrants, but did not change basic evaluations or perceptions about them. (FL)

Abstract

The television networks nightly news coverage of the 1972 Presidential campaign was examined between July 10 and November 6, 1972 to assess the nature and impact of political bias in news coverage. The campaign news coverage of two newspapers and one wire service was also compared with respect to the content and length of each medium's news about the candidates, parties, and political issues to discern differences in the ways that the three media handled their news reports of the campaign. The types of bias investigated were those involved in the news selection process: whether the news was selected because of the peculiar characteristics of the medium (structural bias); because of influence by particular situations, such as political issues (situational bias); or because of the political prejudices of news personnel (political or partisan bias). The analysis showed that structural bias was clearly evident in much of the coverage; newspapers provided greater depth and included greater complexity in their campaign stories, while television news was biased toward visually exciting campaign events easily covered by film crews. No clear evidence, however, was found to suggest that the news coverage by any medium was situationally or politically biased. (RL)
