As a fundamental structural feature, the symmetry of materials determines the exotic quantum properties in transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with charge density wave (CDW). Breaking the inversion symmetry, the Janus structure, an artificially constructed lattice, provides an opportunity to tune the CDW states and the related properties. However, limited by the difficulties in atomic-level fabrication and material stability, the experimental visualization of the CDW states in 2D TMDs with Janus structure is still rare. Here, using surface selenization of VTe2, we fabricated monolayer Janus VTeSe. With scanning tunneling microscopy, an unusual root13-root13 CDW state with threefold rotational symmetry breaking was observed and characterized. Combined with theoretical calculations, we find this CDW state can be attributed to the charge modulation in the Janus VTeSe, beyond the conventional electron-phonon coupling. Our findings provide a promising platform for studying the CDW states and artificially tuning the electronic properties toward the applications.

Chirality is essential for various amazing phenomena in life and matter. However,chirality and its switching in electronic superlattices, such as charge density wave(CDW) arrays, remain elusive. In this study, we characterize the chirality transition with atom-resolution imaging in a single-layer NbSe2 CDW pattern by technique of scanning tunneling microscopy. The atomic lattice of the CDW array is found continuous and intact although its chirality is switched. Several intermediate states are tracked by time-resolved imaging, revealing the fast and dynamic chirality transition. Importantly, the switching is reversibly realized with an external electric-field. Our findings unveil the delicate transition process of chiral CDW array in a 2D crystal down to the atomic scale and may be applicable for future nanoscale devices.

The low-energy excitations of graphene are relativistic massless Dirac fermions with opposite chiralities at valleys K and K'. Breaking the chiral symmetry could lead to gap opening in analogy to dynamical mass generation in particle physics. Here we report direct experimental evidences of chiral symmetry breaking (CSB) from both microscopic and spectroscopic measurements in a Li-intercalated graphene. The CSB is evidenced by gap opening at the Dirac point, Kekul\'e-O type modulation, and chirality mixing near the gap edge. Understanding Mott insulators and charge density waves (CDW) is critical for both fundamental physics and future device applications. However, the relationship between these two phenomena remains unclear, particularly in systems close to two-dimensional (2D) limit. In this study, we utilize scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy to investigate monolayer 1T-NbSe2 to elucidate the energy of the Mott upper Hubbard band (UHB), and reveal that the spin-polarized UHB is spatially distributed away from the dz2 orbital at the center of the CDW unit. Moreover, the UHB shows a root3 x root3 R30{\deg} periodicity in addition to the typically observed CDW pattern. Furthermore, a pattern similar to the CDW order is visible deep in the Mott gap, exhibiting CDW without contribution of the Mott Hubbard band. Based on these findings in monolayer 1T-NbSe2, we provide novel insights into the relation between the correlated and collective electronic structures in monolayer 2D systems.

Two-dimensional topological insulators (2DTI) have attracted increasing attention during the past few years. New 2DTI with increasing larger spin-orbit coupling (SOC) gaps have been predicted by theoretical calculations and some of them have been synthesized experimentally. In this review, the 2DTI, ranging from single element graphene-like materials to bi-elemental TMDs and to multi-elemental materials, with different thicknesses, structures and phases, have been summarized and discussed. The topological properties (especially the quantum spin Hall effect and Dirac fermion feature) and potential applications have been summarized.
