KIC 10685175 is a roAp star whose polar magnetic field is predicted to be 6 kG through a non-adiabatic axisymmetric pulsation theoretical model. In this work, we aim to measure the magnetic field strength of KIC 10685175 using high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations, and compare it with the one predicted by the theoretical model. From the study of two high-resolution unpolarized spectra, we obtained [$T_{\rm eff}$, $\log g$, [Fe/H], [$\alpha$/Fe], $V_{mic}$]=[8250 $\pm$ 200\,K, 4.4 $\pm$ 0.1, -0.4 $\pm$ 0.2, 0.16 $\pm$ 0.1, 1.73 $\pm$ 0.2\,km~s$^{-1}$]. Although the Fe absorption lines appear relatively weak in comparison to typical Ap stars with similar $T_{\rm eff}$, the lines belonging to rare earth elements (Eu and Nd) are stronger than that in chemically normal stars, indicating the peculiar nature of KIC~10685175. The mean longitudinal magnetic field $\langle B_\ell \rangle=-226\pm39$\,G has been measured in the polarized spectrum, but magnetically split lines were not detected. No significant line profile variability was evident in our spectra. Also the longitudinal magnetic field strengths measured using line masks constructed for different elements have been rather similar. Due to a poor rotation phase coverage of our data, additional spectroscopic and polarimetric observations are needed to allow us to conclude on the inhomogeneous element distribution over the stellar surface. The estimated polar magnetic field is $4.8 \pm 0.8$\,kG, which is consistent with the predicted polar magnetic field strength of about 6\,kG within 3$\sigma$. This work therefore provides support for the pulsation theoretical model.

Studies of the magnetic characteristics of massive stars have recently received significant attention because they are progenitors of highly magnetised compact objects. Stars initially more massive than about 8M_sun leave behind neutron stars and black holes by the end of their evolution. The merging of binary compact remnant systems produces astrophysical transients detectable by gravitational wave observatories. Studies of magnetic fields in massive stars with low metallicities are of particular interest because they provide important information on the role of magnetic fields in the star formation of the early Universe. While several detections of massive Galactic magnetic stars have been reported in the last few decades, the impact of a low-metallicity environment on the occurrence and strength of stellar magnetic fields has not yet been explored. Because of the similarity between Of?p stars in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs) and Galactic magnetic Of?p stars, which possess globally organised magnetic fields, we searched for magnetic fields in Of?p stars in the MCs. Additionally, we observed the massive contact binary Cl* NGC 346 SSN7 in the Small Magellanic Cloud to test the theoretical scenario that the origin of magnetic fields involves a merger event or a common envelope evolution. We obtained and analysed measurements of the magnetic field in four massive Of?p stars in the MCs and the binary Cl* NGC 346 SSN7 using the ESO/VLT FORS2 spectrograph in spectropolarimetric mode. We detected kilogauss-scale magnetic fields in two Of?p-type stars and in the contact binary Cl* NGC 346 SSN7. These results suggest that the impact of low metallicity on the occurrence and strength of magnetic fields in massive stars is low. We establish a new tool for studying strongly coupled matter: an effective theory of black holes in gravity, which maps to a hydrodynamic description of field theories via the gauge-gravity duality. Our approach is inspired by previously known effective theories found in the limit of high number of dimensions. We argue that the new approach can accurately describe phase transitions in a wide class of theories, such as the Yang-Mills and other nearly critical field theories. Context. In chemically peculiar Ap/Bp stars with large-scale organised magnetic fields with a simple centred dipole configuration, the ratio between the maximum and the minimum of the mean magnetic field modulus is of the order of 1.25. Values of 2 or more are observed only for very few Ap/Bp stars and are indicative of a very unusual magnetic field geometry. Aims. Determining the magnetic field structure of Ap/Bp stars is bound to provide a different insight into the physics and the origin of the magnetic fields in early-type stars. In this respect, the Bp star HD 57372 is of particular interest because strongly variable magnetically split lines are observed in HARPS and APOGEE spectra. Methods. We obtained and analysed measurements of the mean magnetic field modulus and of the mean longitudinal magnetic field using near-infrared spectra and optical polarimetric spectra distributed over the stellar rotation period. Results. The mean magnetic field modulus of HD 57372, as estimated from absorption lines that are split via the Zeeman effect and resolved in both optical and near-infrared spectra, is found to vary by an extraordinary amount of about 10 kG. The exceptional value of 3 for the ratio between the maximum and the minimum of the field modulus is indicative of a very unusual geometry of HD 57372's magnetic field. All observable quantities are found to vary in phase with the photometric period of 7.889 days. This includes the longitudinal magnetic field , which varies from -6 kG up to 1.7 kG in FORS2 spectra as well as the metal line strengths, whose equivalent widths change by up to 50% of their mean values over the course of the rotation period. The B8 temperature class of HD 57372 also places it among the hottest stars known to exhibit resolved, magnetically split lines.

We present evidence for a spatially modulated instability within the deconfined quark-gluon plasma phase of QCD. This evidence is based on robust predictions from generic holographic models, accurately fitted to lattice data, where the instability is driven by the Chern-Simons term mandated by the flavor anomalies of QCD. Such an instability occurs universally across holographic models at surprisingly low densities, within the crossover region amenable to lattice and experimental studies, therefore inviting further explorations of inhomogeneous phases in this region., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

This work successfully generates an uncertainty-aware surrogate model of the EuroPED plasma pedestal model using the Bayesian neural network with noise contrastive prior (BNN-NCP) technique. This model is trained using data from the JET-ILW pedestal database and subsequent model evaluations, conforming to EuroPED-NN. The BNN-NCP technique has been proven to be a suitable method for generating uncertainty-aware surrogate models. It matches the output results of a regular neural network while providing confidence estimates for predictions as uncertainties. Additionally, it highlights out-of-distribution (OOD) regions using surrogate model uncertainties. This provides critical insights into model robustness and reliability. EuroPED-NN has been physically validated, first, analyzing electron density $n_e\!\left(\psi_{\text{pol}}=0.94\right)$ with respect to increasing plasma current, $I_p$, and second, validating the $\Delta-\beta_{p,ped}$ relation associated with the EuroPED model. This affirms the robustness of the underlying physics learned by the surrogate model. On top of that, the method was used to develop a EuroPED-like model fed with experimental data, i.e. an uncertainty aware experimental model, which is functional in JET database. Both models have been also tested in $\sim 50$ AUG shots.

Numerous delta Sct and gamma Dor pulsators are identified in the region of the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram that is occupied by chemically peculiar magnetic Ap stars. The connection between delta Sct and gamma Dor pulsations and the magnetic field in Ap stars is however not clear: theory suggests for magnetic Ap stars some critical field strengths for pulsation mode suppression by computing the magnetic damping effect for selected p and g modes. To test these theoretical considerations, we obtained PEPSI spectropolarimetric snapshots of the typical Ap star HD340577, for which delta Sct-like pulsations were recently detected in TESS data, and the gamma Dor pulsator HR8799, which is a remarkable system with multiple planets and two debris disks. Our measurements reveal the presence of a magnetic field with a strength of several hundred Gauss in HD340577. The measured mean longitudinal field would be the strongest field measured so far in a delta Sct star if the pulsational character of HD340577 is confirmed spectroscopically. The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) is an ESA-CAS joint mission. Primary goals are investigating the dynamic response of the Earth's magnetosphere to the solar wind (SW) impact via simultaneous in situ magnetosheath (MS) plasma and magnetic field measurements, X-Ray images of the magnetosheath and magnetic cusps, and UV images of global auroral distributions. Magnetopause (MP) deformations associated with MS high speed jets (HSJs) under a quasi-parallel interplanetary magnetic field condition are studied using a three-dimensional (3-D) global hybrid simulation. Soft X-ray intensity calculated based on both physical quantities of solar wind proton and oxygen ions is compared. We obtain key findings concerning deformations at the MP: (1) MP deformations are highly coherent with the MS HSJs generated at the quasiparallel region of the bow shock, (2) X-ray intensities estimated using solar wind H+ and self-consistent O7+ ions are consistent with each other, (3) Visual spacecraft are employed to check the discrimination ability for capturing MP deformations on Lunar and polar orbits, respectively. The SMILE spacecraft on the polar orbit could be expected to provide opportunities for capturing the global geometry of the magnetopause in the equatorial plane. A striking point is that SMILE has the potential to capture small-scale MP deformations and MS transients, such as HSJs, at medium altitudes on its orbit.

The gauge/gravity duality, combined with information from lattice QCD, nuclear theory, and perturbative QCD, can be used to constrain the equation of state of hot and dense QCD. I discuss an approach based on the holographic V-QCD model. I start by reviewing the results from the construction of the V-QCD baryon as a soliton of the gauge fields in the model. Then I discuss implementing nuclear matter in the model by using a homogeneous approach. The model predicts a strongly first order phase transition from nuclear to quark matter with a critical endpoint. By using the model in state-of-the-art simulations of neutron star binaries with parameters consistent with GW170817, I study the formation of quark matter during the merger process., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. Although significant progress has been achieved in recent surveys of the magnetism in massive stars, the origin of the detected magnetic fields remains to be the least understood topic in their studies. We present an analysis of 61 high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of 36 systems with O-type primaries, among them ten known particle-accelerating colliding-wind binaries exhibiting synchrotron radio emission. Our sample consists of multiple systems with components at different evolutionary stages with wide and tight orbits and different types of interactions. For the treatment of the complex composite spectra of the multiple systems, we used a special procedure involving different line masks populated for each element separately. Out of the 36 systems, 22 exhibit in their LSD Stokes V profiles definitely detected Zeeman features, among them seven systems with colliding winds. For fourteen systems the detected Zeeman features are most likely associated with O-type components whereas for three systems we suggest an association with an early B-type component. For the remaining five systems the source of the field is unclear. Marginal evidence for the detection of a Zeeman feature is reported for eleven systems and non-detection for three systems. The large number of systems with definitely detected Zeeman features presents a mystery, but probably indicates that multiplicity plays a definite role in the generation of magnetic fields in massive stars. Solving the properties of dense QCD matter is an extremely challenging problem because standard theoretical tools do not work at intermediate densities. The gauge/gravity duality may help to provide answers in this region. I give a brief review of recent progress in this field, focusing on the V-QCD model, which is one of the most sophisticated holographic models of QCD. I discuss predictions for the phase diagram, the equation of state, and properties of baryons. The entanglement wedge cross sections (EWCSs) are postulated as dual gravity probes to certain measures for the entanglement of multiparty systems. We test various proposed inequalities for EWCSs. As it turns out, contrary to expectations, the EWCS is not clearly monogamous nor polygamous for tripartite systems but the results depend on the details and dimensionality of the geometry of the gravity solutions. We propose weaker monogamy relations for dual entanglement measures, which lead to a new lower bound on EWCS. We present the results of high-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the optically dominant component in the rare hydrogen-deficient binary system upsilon Sgr. Only a small number of such systems in a very late phase of helium shell burning are currently known. The mass transfer from the donor star in binary systems usually leads to the stripping of its hydrogen envelope. Consequently, since the mass of the secondary increases, it appears rejuvenated. Using a few ESO FORS1 low-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of this system, Hubrig et al. announced in 2009 the presence of a magnetic field of the order of -70 - -80G. Here we report on more recent high-resolution ESO HARPS spectropolarimetric observations showing that the primary in upsilon Sgr is a spectrum variable star and possesses a weak magnetic field of the order of a few tens of Gauss. The detection of a magnetic field in this rare hydrogen-deficient binary is of particular interest, as such systems are frequently discussed as probable progenitors of core-collapse supernovae and gravitational-wave sources. Radio waves provide a useful diagnostic tool to investigate the properties of the ionosphere because the ionosphere affects the transmission and properties of High Frequency (HF) electromagnetic waves. We have conducted a transionospheric HF-propagation research campaign with a nanosatellite on a low-Earth polar orbit and the EISCAT HF transmitter facility in Troms{\o}, Norway, in December 2020. In the active measurement, the EISCAT HF facility transmitted sinusoidal 7.953 MHz signal which was received with the HEARER radio spectrometer onboard 1 Unit (size: 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm) Suomi 100 space weather nanosatellite. Data analysis showed that the EISCAT HF signal was detected with the satellite's radio spectrometer when the satellite was the closest to the heater along its orbit. Part of the observed variations seen in the signal was identified to be related to the heater's antenna pattern and to the transmitted pulse shapes. Other observed variations can be related to the spatial and temporal variations of the ionosphere and its different responses to the used transmission frequencies and to the transmitted O- and X-wave modes. Some trends in the observed signal may also be associated to changes in the properties of ionospheric plasma resulting from the heater's electromagnetic wave energy. Auroras can be regarded as the most fascinating manifestation of space weather and they are continuously observed by ground-based and, nowadays more and more, also by space-based measurements. Investigations of auroras and geospace comprise the main research goals of the Suomi 100 nanosatellite, the first Finnish space research satellite, which has been measuring the Earth's ionosphere since its launch on Dec. 3, 2018. In this work, we present a case study where the satellite's camera observations of an aurora over Northern Europe are combined with ground-based observations of the same event. The analyzed image is, to the authors' best knowledge, the first auroral image ever taken by a cubesat. Our data analysis shows that a satellite vantage point provides complementary, novel information of such phenomena. The 3D auroral location reconstruction of the analyzed auroral event demonstrates how information from a 2D image can be used to provide location information of auroras under study. The location modelling also suggests that the Earth's limb direction, which was the case in the analyzed image, is an ideal direction to observe faint auroras. Although imaging on a small satellite has some large disadvantages compared with ground-based imaging (the camera cannot be repaired, a fast moving spinning satellite), the data analysis and modelling demonstrate how even a small 1-Unit (size: 10 cm x 10 cm x 10 cm) CubeSat and its camera, build using cheap commercial off-the-shelf components, can open new possibilities for auroral research, especially, when its measurements are combined with ground-based observations., Comment: Accepted manuscript 34 pages, 17 figures

We show that for a range of strongly coupled theories with a first order phase transition, the domain wall or bubble velocity can be expressed in a simple way in terms of a perfect fluid hydrodynamic formula, and thus in terms of the equation of state. I review holographic models for (dense and cold) nuclear matter, neutron stars, and their mergers. I start by a brief general discussion on current knowledge of cold QCD matter and neutron stars, and go on discussing various approaches to model cold nuclear and quark matter by using gauge/gravity duality, pointing out their strengths and weaknesses. Then I focus on recent results for a complex bottom-up holographic framework (V-QCD), which also takes input from lattice QCD results, effective field theory, and perturbative QCD. Dense nuclear matter is modeled in V-QCD through a homogeneous non-Abelian bulk gauge field. Feasible "hybrid" equations of state for cold nuclear (and quark) matter can be constructed by using traditional methods (e.g., effective field theory) at low densities and the holographic V-QCD model at higher densities. I discuss the constraints from this approach to the properties of the nuclear to quark matter transition as well as to properties of neutron stars. Cybersecurity is increasingly a concern for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and there exist many awareness training programs and tools for them. The literature mainly studies SMEs as a unitary type of company and provides one-size-fits-all recommendations and solutions. However, SMEs are not homogeneous. They are diverse with different vulnerabilities, cybersecurity needs, and competencies. Few studies considered such differences in standards and certificates for security tools adoption and cybersecurity tailoring for these SMEs. This study proposes a classification framework with an outline of cybersecurity improvement needs for each class. The framework suggests five SME types based on their characteristics and specific security needs: cybersecurity abandoned SME, unskilled SME, expert-connected SME, capable SME, and cybersecurity provider SME. In addition to describing the five classes, the study explains the framework's usage in sampled SMEs. The framework proposes solutions for each class to approach cybersecurity awareness and competence more consistent with SME needs. We present the first short time scale observations of the roAp star gamma Equ in linear polarized light obtained with the PEPSI polarimeter installed at the LBT. These observations are used to search for pulsation variability in Stokes Q and U line profiles belonging to different elements. The atmospheres of roAp stars are significantly stratified with spectral lines of different elements probing different atmospheric depths. roAp stars with strong magnetic fields, such as gamma Equ with a magnetic field modulus of 4kG and a pulsation period of 12.21min, are of special interest because the effect of the magnetic field on the structure of their atmospheres can be studied with greatest detail and accuracy. Our results show that we may detect changes in the transversal field component in Fe I and rare-earth lines possessing large second-order Lande factors. Such variability can be due to the impact of pulsation on the transverse magnetic field, causing changes in the obliquity angles of the magnetic force lines. In the context of theories with a first order phase transition, we propose a general covariant description of coexisting phases separated by domain walls using an additional order parameter-like degree of freedom. In the case of a holographic Witten model with a confining and deconfined phase, the resulting model extends hydrodynamics and has a simple formulation in terms of a spacetime action with corresponding expressions for the energy-momentum tensor. The proposed description leads to simple analytic profiles of domain walls, including expressions for surface tension density, which agree nicely with holographic numerical solutions, despite the apparent complexity of those gravitational backgrounds., Comment: 51 pages, 11 figures. v2: references updated

The ion escape of Mars' CO$_2$ atmosphere caused by its dissociation products C and O atoms is {simulated} from present time to $\sim 4.1$ billion years ago (Ga) by {numerical models of the upper atmosphere and its interaction with the solar wind}. The planetward-scattered pick-up ions are used for sputtering estimates of exospheric particles including $^{36}$Ar and $^{38}$Ar isotopes. Total ion escape, sputtering and photochemical escape rates are compared. For solar EUV fluxes $\geq$\,3 times that of today's Sun (earlier than $\sim 2.6$ Ga) ion escape becomes the dominant atmospheric non-thermal loss process until thermal escape takes over during the pre-Noachian eon (earlier than $\sim 4.0\,-\,4.1$ Ga). If we extrapolate the total escape of CO$_2$-related dissociation products back in time until $\sim$ 4.1 Ga we obtain a {maximum} theoretical equivalent to CO$_2$ partial pressure of more than {$\sim 0.4$ bar through non-thermal escape during quiet solar wind conditions}. {However, surface-atmosphere interaction and/or extreme solar events such as frequent CMEs could have increased this value even further. By including the surface as a sink, up to 0.9\,bar, or even up to 1.8\,bar in case of hidden carbonate reservoirs, could have been present at 4.1\,Ga} The fractionation of $^{36}$Ar/$^{38}$Ar isotopes through sputtering and volcanic outgassing from its initial chondritic value of 5.3, as measured in the 4.1 billion years old Mars meteorite ALH 84001, until the present day, however, can be reproduced for assumed CO$_2$ partial pressures of {$\sim0.01 -- 0.4$\,bar without, and $\sim0.4 -- 1.8$\,bar including surface sinks, and} depending on the cessation time of the Martian dynamo (assumed between 3.6\,--\,4.0 Ga) - if atmospheric sputtering of Ar started afterwards., Comment: 63 pages (including 8 pages of supplement), 21 figures and 20 tables (including 12 figures and 15 tables in the supplement), resubmitted to Icarus

Nuclear matter at large number of colors is necessarily in a solid phase. In particular holographic nuclear matter takes the form of a crystal of instantons of the flavor group. In this article we initiate the analysis of the three-dimensional crystal structures and the orientation patterns for the two-body potential that follows from holographic duality. The outcome of the analysis includes several unexpected results. We perform simulations of ensembles of O(10000) instantons whereby we identify the lattice structure and orientations for the different values of the weight factors of the non-Abelian orientation terms in the two-body potential. The resulting phase diagram is surprisingly complex, including a variety of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic crystals with various global orientation patterns, and various "non-Abelian" crystals where orientations have no preferred direction. The latter include variants of face-centered-cubic, hexagonal, and simple cubic crystals which may have remarkably large or small aspect ratios. Magnetic fields in Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars are not well explored, although there is indirect evidence, e.g. from spectral variability and X-ray emission, that magnetic fields should be present in these stars. Being in an advanced stage of their evolution, WR stars have lost their hydrogen envelope, but their dense winds make the stellar core almost unobservable. To substantiate the expectations on the presence of magnetic fields in the most-evolved massive stars, we selected two WR stars, WR46 and WR55, for the search of the presence of magnetic fields using FORS2 spectropolarimetric observations. We achieve a formally definite detection of a variable mean longitudinal magnetic field of the order of a few hundred Gauss in WR55. The field detection in this star, which is associated with the ring nebula RCW78 and the molecular environment, is of exceptional importance for our understanding of star formation. No field detection at a significance level of 3sigma was achieved for WR46, but the variability of the measured field strengths can be rather well phased with the rotation period of 15.5h previously suggested by FUSE observations., Comment: 5 pages, 1 table, 3 figures, accepted for publication as a letter to MNRAS

The Bp star HD94660 is a single-lined spectroscopic binary. Some authors have suggested that the unseen companion of at least 2M_sun may be a compact object. We intend to study this multiple system in detail, especially to learn more about the so-far unseen companion. We have collected and analyzed PIONIER H-band data from the Very Large Telescope Interferometer, TESS visible photometric data, and X-ray observations with Chandra of HD94660. Using PIONIER, we were able to detect the companion to HD94660, which is absent from high quality spectra at visible wavelengths, with a magnitude difference of 1.8 in the H band at a separation of 18.72mas. The TESS light curve shows variations with a period of 2.1d and also flaring. The Chandra spectrum is well described by emission from hot thermal plasma, yet might include a non-thermal component. The X-ray properties are compatible with a magnetically active companion, while some magnetospheric contribution from the primary is also possible. We can rule out that the companion to HD94660 is a compact source. It is also very unlikely that this companion is a single star, as the estimated mass of more than 2M_sun, the magnitude difference of 1.8 in the H band, and its non-detection in visible spectra are difficult to realize in a single object. One alternative could be a pair of late F stars, which would also be responsible for the detected photometric variations. Ab initio methods using weakly interacting nucleons give a good description of condensed nuclear matter up to densities comparable to the nuclear saturation density. At higher densities palpable strong interactions between overlapping nucleons become important; we propose that the interactions will continuously switch over to follow a holographic model in this region. In order to implement this, we construct hybrid equations of state (EoSs) where various models are used for low density nuclear matter, and the holographic V-QCD model is used for non-perturbative high density nuclear matter as well as for quark matter. We carefully examine all existing constraints from astrophysics of compact stars and discuss their implications for the hybrid EoSs. Thanks to the stiffness of the V-QCD EoS for nuclear matter, we obtain a large family of viable hybrid EoSs passing the constraints. We find that quark matter cores in neutron stars are unstable due to the strongly first order deconfinement transition, and predict bounds on the tidal deformability as well as on the radius of neutron stars. Motivated by the possible presence of deconfined quark matter in neutron stars and their mergers and the important role of transport phenomena in these systems, we perform the first-ever systematic study of different viscosities and conductivities of dense quark matter using the gauge/gravity duality. The main-sequence mercury-manganese (HgMn) stars are known to exhibit large overabundances of exotic elements and, similar to magnetic Ap/Bp stars, are spectrum variables, implying the presence of an inhomogeneous element distribution over the stellar surface. A number of magnetic field studies have been attempted in the last decades, indicating that magnetic fields in HgMn stars, if they exist, should be rather weak. The presence of tangled magnetic fields was suggested by several authors who detected quadratic magnetic fields using the moment technique. We employ the least-squares deconvolution technique to carry out a sensitive search for weak magnetic fields in spectropolarimetric observations of three HgMn stars, HD221507, HD65949, and HD101189, which have different fundamental parameters and spectral characteristics. A definite weak longitudinal field is discovered in HD221507 and HD65949 on single epochs, while only marginal field detections were achieved for HD101189. The new measurements indicate that the structure of the magnetic fields is probably rather complex: our analysis reveals the presence of reversed Stokes V profiles at the same observational epoch if individual elements are used in the measurements. We present an experimental study of the Dynamic Nuclear Polarization (DNP) of \si{} nuclei in silicon crystals of natural abundance doped with As in the temperature range 0.1-1 K and in strong magnetic field of 4.6 T. This ensures very high degree of electron spin polarization, extremely slow nuclear relaxation and optimal conditions for realization of Overhauser and resolved solid effects. We found that the solid effect DNP leads to an appearance of a pattern of holes and peaks in the ESR line, separated by the super-hyperfine interaction between the donor electron and \si{} nuclei closest to the donor. On the contrary, the Overhauser effect DNP mainly affects the remote \si{} nuclei having the weakest interaction with the donor electron. This leads to an appearance of a very narrow ($\approx$ 3 mG wide) hole in the ESR line. We studied relaxation of the holes after burning, which is caused by the nuclear spin diffusion. Analyzing the spin diffusion data with a simple one-dimensional spectral diffusion model leads to a value of the spectral diffusion coefficient $D=8(3)\times 10^{-3}$ mG$^2$/s. Our data indicate that the spin diffusion is not completely prevented even in the frozen core near the donors. The emergence of the narrow hole after the Overhauser DNP may be explained by a partial "softening" of the frozen core caused by Rabi oscillations of the electron spin., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

The first FORS2 spectropolarimetric observation of the longitudinal magnetic field of HD54879 of the order of -600G with a lower limit of the dipole strength of ~2kG dates back to 2014. Since then observations showed a gradual decrease of the absolute value of the mean longitudinal magnetic field. In the course of the most recent monitoring of HD54879 using FORS2 spectropolarimetric observations from 2017 October to 2018 February, a longitudinal magnetic field strength change from about -300G down to about -90G was reported. A sudden increase of the absolute value of the mean longitudinal magnetic field and an accompanying spectral variability was detected on 2018 February 17. New FORS2 spectropolarimetric data obtained from 2018 December to 2019 February confirm the very slow magnetic field variability, with the field decreasing from about 150G to -100G over two months. Such a slow magnetic field variability, related to the extremely slow rotation of HD54879, is also confirmed using high-resolution HARPSpol and ESPaDOnS spectropolarimetry. The re-analysis of the FORS2 polarimetric spectra from 2018 February indicates that the previously reported field increase and the change of the spectral appearance was caused by improper spectra extraction and wavelength calibration using observations obtained at an insufficient signal-to-noise ratio. We investigate the stellar atmospheres of the two components of the Herbig Ae SB2 system AK Sco to determine the elements present in the stars and their abundance. Equal stellar parameters T_eff = 6500K and log g = 4.5 were used for both stars. We studied HARPSpol spectra (resolution 110,000) that were previously used to state the presence of a weak magnetic field in the secondary. A composite synthetic spectrum was compared in the whole observed region lambda 3900-6912A with the observed spectrum. The abundances were derived mostly from unblended profiles, in spite of their sparsity, owing to the complexity of the system and to the not negligible v sin i of 18km/s and 21km/s adopted for the two components, respectively. The identified elements are those typical of stars with spectral type F5IV-V, except for Li I at 6707A and He I at 5875.61A, whose presence is related with the Herbig nature of the two stars. Furthermore, overabundances were determined in both stars for Y, Ba, and La. Zirconium is overabundant only in the primary, while sulfur is overabundant outside the adopted error limits only in the secondary. In contrast to previous results showing a high occurrence rate of lambda Boo peculiarities or normal chemical composition among the Herbig Ae/Be stars, the abundance pattern of AK Sco is similar to that of only few other Herbig stars displaying weak Ap/Bp peculiarities. Intrinsic magnetic fields have long been thought to shield planets from atmospheric erosion via stellar winds; however, the influence of the plasma environment on atmospheric escape is complex. Here we study the influence of a weak intrinsic dipolar planetary magnetic field on the plasma environment and subsequent ion escape from a Mars sized planet in a global three-dimensional hybrid simulation. We find that increasing the strength of a planet's magnetic field enhances ion escape until the magnetic dipole's standoff distance reaches the induced magnetosphere boundary. After this point increasing the planetary magnetic field begins to inhibit ion escape. This reflects a balance between shielding of the southern hemisphere from ``misaligned" ion pickup forces and trapping of escaping ions by an equatorial plasmasphere. Thus, the planetary magnetic field associated with the peak ion escape rate is critically dependent on the stellar wind pressure. Planetary habitability is in part determined by the atmospheric evolution of a planet; one key component of such evolution is escape of heavy ions to space. Ion loss processes are sensitive to the plasma environment of the planet, dictated by the stellar wind and stellar radiation. These conditions are likely to vary from what we observe in our own solar system when considering a planet in the habitable zone around an M-dwarf. Here we use a hybrid global plasma model to perform a systematic study of the changing plasma environment and ion escape as a function of stellar input conditions, which are designed to mimic those of potentially habitable planets orbiting M-dwarfs. We begin with a nominal case of a solar wind experienced at Mars today, and incrementally modify the interplanetary magnetic field orientation and strength, dynamic pressure, and Extreme Ultraviolet input. We find that both ion loss morphology and overall rates vary significantly, and in cases where the stellar wind pressure was increased, the ion loss began to be diffusion or production limited with roughly half of all produced ions being lost. Models of magnetically driven accretion and outflows reproduce many observational properties of T Tauri stars. For the more massive Herbig Ae/Be stars, the corresponding picture is not well established. Nonetheless, it is expected that accretion flows in pre-main-sequence stars are guided from the circumstellar disk to stellar regions of high latitude along the magnetic field lines inside a magnetosphere. Using near-infrared multi-epoch spectroscopic data obtained with ISAAC, CRIRES, and X-shooter on the VLT, we examined magnetospheric accretion in the two Herbig Ae stars HD101412 and HD104237. Spectroscopic signatures in He I 10830 and Pa_gamma, two near-infrared lines that are formed in a Herbig star's accretion region, show temporal modulation in both objects. For HD101412, this modulation is governed by its rotation period, which we could recover from the data. We could show that our spectroscopic observations can be explained within the magnetic geometry that we established earlier from magnetic field measurements. For HD104237, we struggled to clearly identify a rotation period. Only eleven O-type stars have been confirmed to possess large-scale organized magnetic fields. The presence of a -600G longitudinal magnetic field in the O9.7V star HD54879 with a lower limit of the dipole strength of ~2kG, was discovered a few years ago in the framework of the ESO large program "B-fields in OB stars". Our FORS2 spectropolarimetric observations from 2017 October 4 to 2018 February 21 reveal the presence of short and long-term spectral variability and a gradual magnetic field decrease from about -300G down to about -90G. Surprisingly, we discover on the night of 2018 February 17 a sudden, short-term increase of the magnetic field strength and measure a longitudinal magnetic field of -833G. The inspection of the FORS2 spectrum acquired during the observed magnetic field increase indicates a very strong change in spectral appearance with a significantly lower photospheric temperature and a decrease of the radial velocity by several 10km/s. Different scenarios are discussed in an attempt to interpret our observations. Models of magnetically driven accretion reproduce many observational properties of T Tauri stars. For the more massive Herbig Ae/Be stars, the corresponding picture has been questioned lately, in part driven by the fact that their magnetic fields are typically one order of magnitude weaker. Indeed, the search for magnetic fields in Herbig Ae/Be stars has been quite time consuming, with a detection rate of about 7%, also limited by the current potential to detect weak magnetic fields. Over the last two decades, magnetic fields were found in about twenty objects and for only two Herbig Ae/Be stars was the magnetic field geometry constrained. Further, studies were undertaken to investigate the time dependence of spectroscopic tracers of magnetospheric accretion. A fraction of high-mass X-ray binaries are supergiant fast X-ray transients. These systems have on average low X-ray luminosities, but display short flares during which their X-ray luminosity rises by a few orders of magnitude. The leading model for the physics governing this X-ray behaviour suggests that the winds of the donor OB supergiants are magnetized. In agreement with this model, the first spectropolarimetric observations of the SFXT IGR J11215-5952 using the FORS2 instrument at the Very Large Telescope indicate the presence of a kG longitudinal magnetic field. Previous circular polarization observations obtained with the ESO FOcal Reducer low dispersion spectrograpgh at the VLT in 2007-2008 revealed the presence of a weak longitudinal magnetic field on the surface of the optical component of the X-ray binary Cyg X-1, which contains a black hole and an O9.7Iab supergiant on a 5.6d orbit. Almost three decades ago, Mathys (1990) demonstrated the importance of studying Ap stars showing resolved Zeeman split Fe II 6147.7 and 6149.2 lines. Such Zeeman split lines can be seen in stars whose projected rotational velocity is sufficiently small and whose magnetic field is strong enough to exceed the rotational Doppler broadening. Observations of resolved Zeeman split lines permit the diagnosis of the average of the modulus of the magnetic field over the visible stellar hemisphere. We investigate the effects of anisotropy on the chiral condensate in a holographic model of QCD with a fully backreacted quark sector at vanishing chemical potential. The high temperature deconfined phase is a neutral and anisotropic plasma showing different pressure gradients along different spatial directions, similar to the state produced in noncentral heavy-ion collisions. We find that the chiral transition occurs at a lower temperature in the presence of anisotropy. Equivalently, we find that anisotropy acts destructively on the chiral condensate near the transition temperature. These are precisely the same footprints as the "inverse magnetic catalysis" i.e. the destruction of the condensate with increasing magnetic field observed earlier on the lattice, in effective field theory models and in holography. Based on our findings we suggest, in accordance with the conjecture of [1], that the cause for the inverse magnetic catalysis may be the anisotropy caused by the presence of the magnetic field instead of the charge dynamics created by it. We conclude that the weakening of the chiral condensate due to anisotropy is more general than that due to a magnetic field and we coin the former "inverse anisotropic catalysis". Finally, we observe that any amount of anisotropy changes the IR physics substantially: the geometry is $\text{AdS}_4 \times \mathbb{R}$ up to small corrections, confinement is present only up to a certain scale, and the particles acquire finite widths., Comment: 41 pages, 11 figures

We use the holographic V-QCD models to analyse the physics of dense QCD and neutron stars. Accommodating lattice results for thermodynamics of QCD enables us to make generic predictions for the Equation of State (EoS) of the quark matter phase in the cold and dense regime. We demonstrate that the resulting pressure in V-QCD matches well with a family of neutron-star-matter EoSs that interpolate between state-of-the-art theoretical results for low and high density QCD. After implementing the astrophysical constraints, i.e., the largest known neutron star mass and the recent LIGO/Virgo results for the tidal deformability, we analyse the phase transition between the baryonic and quark matter phases. We find that the baryon density $n_B$ at the transition is at least 2.9 times the nuclear saturation density $n_s$. Test-Driven Development (TDD) has been claimed to increase external software quality. However, the extent to which TDD increases external quality has been seldom studied in industrial experiments. We conduct four industrial experiments in two different companies to evaluate the performance of TDD on external quality. We study whether the performance of TDD holds across premises within the same company and across companies. We identify participant-level characteristics impacting results. Iterative-Test Last (ITL), the reverse approach of TDD, outperforms TDD in three out of four premises. ITL outperforms TDD in both companies. The larger the experience with unit testing and testing tools, the larger the difference in performance between ITL and TDD (in favour of ITL). Technological environment (i.e., programming language and testing tool) seems not to impact results. Evaluating participant-level characteristics impacting results in industrial experiments may ease the understanding of the performance of TDD in realistic settings.

Since its discovery more than half a century ago Przybylski's star (HD101065) continues to excite the astronomical community by the unusual nature of its spectrum, exhibiting exotic element abundances. This star was also the first magnetic chemically peculiar A-type star for which the presence of rapid oscillations was established. Our analysis of newly acquired and historic longitudinal magnetic field measurements indicates that Przybylski's star is also unusual with respect to its extremely slow rotation. Adopting a dipolar structure for the magnetic field and using a sine wave fit to all reported longitudinal magnetic field values over the last 43yr, we find a probable rotation period P_rot ~ 188yr, which however has to be considered tentative as it does not represent a unique solution and has to be verified by future observations. Additionally, based on our own spectropolarimetric material obtained with HARPSpol, we discuss the impact of the anomalous structure of its atmosphere, in particular of the non-uniform horizontal and vertical distributions of chemical elements on the magnetic field measurements and the pulsational variability. We report on an electron spin resonance study of atomic hydrogen stabilized in a solid Ne matrices carried out at a high field of 4.6 T and temperatures below 1 K. The films of Ne, slowly deposited on the substrate at the temperature $\sim$1 K, exhibited a high degree of porosity. We found that H atoms may be trapped in two different substitutional positions in the Ne lattice as well as inside clusters of pure molecular H$_{2}$ in the pores of the Ne film. The latter type of atoms was very unstable against recombination at temperatures 0.3-0.6$\,$K. Based on the observed nearly instant decays after rapid small increase of temperature, we evaluate the lower limit of the recombination rate constant $k_{r}\geq5\cdot10^{-20}\,$cm$^{3}$s$^{-1}$ at 0.6$\,$K, five orders of magnitude larger than that previously found in the thin films of pure H$_{2}$ at the same temperature. Such behavior assumes a very high mobility of atoms and may indicate a solid-to-liquid transition for H$_{2}$ clusters of certain sizes, similar to that observed in experiments with H$_{2}$ clusters inside helium droplets (Phys. Rev. Lett 101, 205301 (2008)). We found that the efficiency of dissociation of H$_{2}$ in neon films is enhanced by 2 orders of magnitude compared to that in pure H$_{2}$, which is instigated by a strong emission of secondary electrons., Comment: 13 pages, 12 Figures

A significant fraction of high-mass X-ray binaries are supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs). The prime model for the physics governing their X-ray behaviour suggests that the winds of donor OB supergiants are magnetized. To investigate if magnetic fields are indeed present in the optical counterparts of such systems, we acquired low-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of the two optically brightest SFXTs, IGR J08408-4503 and IGR J11215-5952 with the ESO FORS2 instrument during two different observing runs. No field detection at a significance level of 3sigma was achieved for IGR J08408-4503. For IGR J11215-5952, we obtain 3.2sigma and 3.8sigma detections (_hydr = -978+-308G and _hydr = 416+-110G) on two different nights in 2016. These results indicate that the model involving the interaction of a magnetized stellar wind with the neutron star magnetosphere can indeed be considered to characterize the behaviour of SFXTs. We detected long-term spectral variability in IGR J11215-5952, while for IGR J08408-4503 we find an indication of the presence of short-term variability on a time scale of minutes., Comment: 5 pages, 1 table, 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In a holographic probe-brane model exhibiting a spontaneously spatially modulated ground state, we introduce explicit sources of symmetry breaking in the form of ionic and antiferromagnetic lattices. For the first time in a holographic model, we demonstrate pinning, in which the translational Goldstone mode is lifted by the introduction of explicit sources of translational symmetry breaking. The numerically computed optical conductivity fits very well to a Drude-Lorentz model with a small residual metallicity, precisely matching analytic formulas for the DC conductivity. The magnetic field of CPD -57 3509 was recently detected in the framework of the BOB (B fields in OB stars) collaboration. We acquired low-resolution spectropolarimetric observations of CPD -57 3509 with FORS2 and high-resolution UVES observations randomly distributed over a few months to search for periodicity, to study the magnetic field geometry, and to determine the surface distribution of silicon and helium. We also obtained supplementary photometric observations at a timeline similar to the spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric observations. A period of 6.36d was detected in the measurements of the mean longitudinal magnetic field. A sinusoidal fit to our measurements allowed us to constrain the magnetic field geometry and estimate the dipole strength in the range of 3.9-4.5kG. Our application of the Doppler imaging technique revealed the presence of He I spots located around the magnetic poles, with a strong concentration at the positive pole and a weaker one around the negative pole. In contrast, high concentration Si III spots are located close to the magnetic equator. Further, our analysis of the spectral variability of CPD -57 3509 on short time scales indicates distinct changes in shape and position of line profiles possibly caused by the presence of beta Cep-like pulsations. We investigate the phase diagram of QCD-like gauge theories at strong coupling at finite magnetic field $B$, temperature $T$ and baryon chemical potential $\mu$ using the improved holographic QCD model including the full backreaction of the quarks in the plasma. In addition to the phase diagram we study the behavior of the quark condensate as a function of $T$, $B$ and $\mu$ and discuss the fate of (inverse) magnetic catalysis at finite $\mu$. In particular we observe that inverse magnetic catalysis exists only for small values of the baryon chemical potential. The speed of sound in this holographic quark-gluon plasma exhibits interesting dependence on the thermodynamic parameters., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

Strong electron cooling on the neutral gas in cometary comae has been predicted for a long time, but actual measurements of low electron temperature are scarce. We present in situ measurements of plasma density, electron temperature and spacecraft potential by the Rosetta Langmuir probe instrument, LAP. Data acquired within a few hundred km from the nucleus are dominated by a warm component with electron temperature typically 5--10 eV at all heliocentric distances covered (1.25 to 3.83 AU). A cold component, with temperature no higher than about 0.1 eV, appears in the data as short (few to few tens of seconds) pulses of high probe current, indicating local enhancement of plasma density as well as a decrease in electron temperature. These pulses first appeared around 3 AU and were seen for longer periods close to perihelion. The general pattern of pulse appearance follows that of neutral gas and plasma density. We have not identified any periods with only cold electrons present. The electron flux to Rosetta was always dominated by higher energies, driving the spacecraft potential to order -10 V. The warm (5--10 eV) electron population is interpreted as electrons retaining the energy they obtained when released in the ionisation process. The sometimes observed cold populations with electron temperatures below 0.1 eV verify collisional cooling in the coma. The cold electrons were only observed together with the warm population. The general appearance of the cold population appears to be consistent with a Haser-like model, implicitly supporting also the coupling of ions to the neutral gas. The expanding cold plasma is unstable, forming filaments that we observe as pulses.

A longitudinal magnetic field with a strength of 5.2kG was recently detected in CPD -62 2124, which has a fractional main-sequence lifetime of about 60%. Strongly magnetic early-B type chemically peculiar stars in an advanced evolutionary state are of special interest to understand the evolution of the angular momentum and spin-down timescales in the presence of a global magnetic field. We exploited 17 FORS2 low-resolution spectropolarimetric observations and 844 ASAS3 photometric measurements for the determination of the rotation period, pulsations, and the magnetic field geometry of the star. We calculated periodograms and applied phenomenological models of photometric, spectral and spectropolarimetric variability. We found that all quantities studied, specifically equivalent widths, the mean longitudinal magnetic field , and the flux in the V filter, vary with the same period P = 2.628d, which was identified as the rotation period. The observed variations can be fully explained by a rigidly rotating main-sequence star with an uneven distribution of chemical elements, photometric spots, and a stable, nearly dipolar magnetic field with a polar field strength of about 21kG, frozen into the body of the star. The magnetic field of CPD -62 2124 is tilted to the rotation axis by beta=28+-7deg, while the inclination of the rotation axis towards the line of sight is only i=20+-5deg. In the acquired FORS2 spectra, we detect short-term line profile variations indicating the presence of beta Cephei type pulsations. HD 164492C is a spectroscopic triple stellar system that has been recently detected to possess a strong magnetic field. We have obtained high-resolution spectroscopic and spectropolarimetric observations over a timespan of two years and derived physical, chemical, and magnetic properties for this object. The system is formed by an eccentric close spectroscopic binary (Ca1-Ca2) with a period of 12.5 days, and a massive tertiary Cb. We calculated the orbital parameters of the close pair, reconstructed the spectra of the three components, and determined atmospheric parameters and chemical abundances by spectral synthesis. From spectropolarimetric observations, multi-epoch measurements of the longitudinal magnetic fields were obtained. The magnetic field is strongly variable on timescales of a few days, with a most probable period in the range of 1.4-1.6 days. Star Cb with Teff~25000 K is the apparently fastest rotator and the most massive star of this triple system and has anomalous chemical abundances with a marked overabundance of helium, 0.35+/-0.04 by number. We identified this star as being responsible for the observed magnetic field, although the presence of magnetic fields in the components of the Ca pair cannot be excluded. Star Ca1 with a temperature of about 24000 K presents a normal chemical pattern, while the least massive star Ca2 is a mid-B type star (Teff~15000 K) with an overabundance of silicon.
