Efficient sound transmission across the water-air interface has always been expected in the field of ocean exploration. However, the existing researches are mainly concentrated on the narrow-band transmission based on resonance, which greatly limits the transmission capacity and efficiency. Here, we combined the air-based and water-based metafluids to realize an exponential gradient impedance matching layer for broadband water-air sound transmission. By cooperatively adjusting the sound velocity and thickness in the matching layers, we modulated the required acoustic parameters of each layer into a reasonable range, which can be conveniently achieved by the proposed metafluids. A matching layer sample was constructed and validated in a water tank. Experimental results show that the proposed matching layer can achieve an average sound energy transmission enhancement above 16.7dB from 880Hz to 1760Hz across the water-air interface. Moreover, we use the proposed matching layer to demonstrate a multicolor picture transmission from air to water, which shows extremely high communication capacity and accuracy. Our work is promising for more applications based on water-air transmission and opens a new avenue to the design and implementation of the extreme impedance matching case.

Tuning the mass density and bulk modulus independently is the key to manipulate the propagation of sound wave. Acoustic metamaterials provide a feasible method to realize various acoustic parameters. However, the relevant studies are mainly concentrated in air, and the huge impedance difference makes it difficult to directly extend these airborne structures to underwater application. Here, we propose a metafluid to realize independent manipulation of the mass density and bulk modulus underwater. The metafluid is composed of hollow regular polygons immersed in the water. By adjusting the side number of the hollow regular polygons and choosing proper materials, the effective mass density and bulk modulus of the metafluid could be modulated independently. Based on the flexible adjustment method, metafluids with same impedance but different sound velocities are designed and used to realize an underwater impedance-matched gradient index lens. In addition, by combining the proposed metafluid with other artificial structures, acoustic parameters with great anisotropy can be achieved, which is exemplified by the design and demonstration of an impedance-matched underwater acoustic carpet cloak. This work can expand the practicability of underwater metamaterials and pave the way for future potential engineering applications in the practical underwater devices.

Most causal discovery procedures assume that there are no latent confounders in the system, which is often violated in real-world problems. In this paper, we consider a challenging scenario for causal structure identification, where some variables are latent and they form a hierarchical graph structure to generate the measured variables; the children of latent variables may still be latent and only leaf nodes are measured, and moreover, there can be multiple paths between every pair of variables (i.e., it is beyond tree structure). We propose an estimation procedure that can efficiently locate latent variables, determine their cardinalities, and identify the latent hierarchical structure, by leveraging rank deficiency constraints over the measured variables. We show that the proposed algorithm can find the correct Markov equivalence class of the whole graph asymptotically under proper restrictions on the graph structure.

From ancient to modern times, acoustic structures have been used to control the propagation of acoustic waves. However, the design of the acoustic structures has remained widely a time-consuming and computational resource-consuming iterative process. In recent years, Deep Learning has attracted unprecedented attention for its ability to tackle hard problems with huge datasets, which has achieved state-of-the-art results in various tasks. In this work, an acoustic structure design method is proposed based on deep learning. Taking the design of multi-order Helmholtz resonator for instance, we experimentally demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. Our method is not only able to give a very accurate prediction of the geometry of the acoustic structures with multiple strong-coupling parameters, but also capable of improving the performance of evolutionary approaches in optimization for a desired property. Compared with the conventional numerical methods, our method is more efficient, universal and automatic, which has a wide range of potential applications, such as speech enhancement, sound absorption and insulation.

As the dominant information carrier in water, acoustic wave is widely used for underwater detection, communication and imaging. Even though underwater acoustic communication has been greatly improved in the past decades, it still suffers from the slow transmission speed and low information capacity. The recently developed acoustic orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing communication promises a high efficiency, large capacity and fast transmission speed for acoustic communication. However, the current works on OAM multiplexing communication mainly appears in airborne acoustics. The application of acoustic OAM for underwater communication remains to be further explored and studied. In this paper, an impedance matching pentamode demultiplexing metasurface is designed to realize multiplexing and demultiplexing in underwater acoustic communication. The impedance matching of the metasurface ensures high transmission of the transmitted information. The information encoded into two different OAM beams as two independent channels is numerically demonstrated by realizing real-time picture transfer. The simulation shows the effectiveness of the system for underwater acoustic multiplexing communication. This work paves the way for experimental demonstration and practical application of OAM multiplexing for underwater acoustic communication

In PT-symmetric gratings, asymmetric diffraction can be generated by modulating the ratio between imaginary and real refractive indices. In this paper, a rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) has been developed to analyze the diffraction properties of acoustic PT-symmetric gratings with two kinds of modulating approaches, including modulating the effective modulus and the effective density. Asymmetric diffraction with both Bragg incident angles and perpendicular incident angles is discussed by using the RCWA method. Results show that the modulation ratio for the diffraction vanishing point changes with the modulation amplitude differently for two kinds of modulating approaches. Moreover, the sound energy will be weaken or be enhanced at Bragg incident angles depending on the sign of incident angles and the modulation ratio.

Conventional approaches to sound localization and separation are based on microphone arrays in artificial systems. Inspired by the selective perception of human auditory system, we design a multi-source listening system which can separate simultaneous overlapping sounds and localize the sound sources in three-dimensional space, using only a single microphone with a metamaterial enclosure. The enclosure modifies the frequency response of the microphone in a direction-dependent way by giving each direction a signature. Thus, the information about the location and audio content of sound sources can be experimentally reconstructed from the modulated mixed signals using compressive sensing algorithm. Owing to the low computational complexity of the proposed reconstruction algorithm, the designed system can also be applied in source identification and tracking. The effectiveness of the system in multiple real scenarios has been proved through multiple random listening tests. The proposed metamaterial-based single-sensor listening system opens a new way of sound localization and separation, which can be applied to intelligent scene monitoring and robot audition.

Passive parity-time-symmetric medium provides a feasible scheme to investigate non-Hermitian systems experimentally. Here, we design a passive PT-symmetric acoustic grating with a period equal to exact PT-symmetric medium. This treatment enhances the diffraction ability of a passive PT-symmetric grating with more compact modulation. Above all, it eliminates the first-order disturbance of previous design in diffraction grating. Additional cavities and small leaked holes on top plate in a 2D waveguide are used to construct a parity-time-symmetric potential. The combining between additional cavities and leaked holes makes it possible to modulate the real and imaginary parts of refractive index simultaneously. When the real and imaginary parts of refractive index are balanced in modulation, asymmetric diffraction can be observed between a pair of oblique incident waves. This demonstration provides a feasible way to construct passive parity-time-symmetric acoustic medium. It opens new possibilities for further investigation of acoustic wave control in non-Hermitian systems.

In this work, we present a practical design of quasi isotropic underwater acoustic carpet cloak with pentamode microstructure. The quasi conformal transformation is not only used to obtain the required parameters, but also used to deform the retrieved regular pentamode material structure to the desired carpet, during which the effective parameters can be considered as not being affected too much. The nice and broadband cloak effect shows the success of the design. This work will contribute to the experimental demonstration of pentamode acoustic carpet cloak. We present the design, architecture and detailed performance of a three-dimensional (3D) underwater acoustic carpet cloak (UACC). The proposed system of the 3D UACC is an octahedral pyramid which is composed of periodical steel strips. This underwater acoustic device, placed over the target to hide, is able to manipulate the scattered wavefront to mimic a reflecting plane. The effectiveness of the prototype is experimentally demonstrated in an anechoic tank. The measured acoustic pressure distributions show that the 3D UACC can work in all directions in a wide frequency range. This experimental verification of 3D device paves the way for guidelines on future practical applications.

We design an impedance matching underwater acoustic bend with pentamode microstructure. The proposed bend is assembled by pentamode lattice. The effective density and compressive mod- ulus of each unit cell can be tuned simultaneously, which are modulated to guarantee both the bending effect and high transmission. The standard deviations of transmitted phase are calculated to quantitatively evaluate the degree of the distortion of the transmitted wavefront, while the trans- mission is calculated to appraise the degree of acoustic impedance matching. The low standard deviations and high transmission indicate that the designed bend has a nice broadband bending effect and is impedance-matched to water. We propose the design of an impedance matching acoustic bend in this article. The bending structure is composed of sub-wavelength unit cells with perforated plates and side pipes, whose mass density and bulk modulus can be tuned simultaneously. So the refraction index and the impedance of the acoustic bend can be modulated simultaneously to guarantee both the bending effect and the high transmission. The simulation results of sound pressure field distribution show that the bending effect of the impedance matching acoustic bend is very good. Transmission spectra of the impedance matching acoustic bend and the acoustic bend composed of perforated plates only are both calculated for comparison. The results indicate that the impedance matching acoustic bend is successful in improving the impedance ratio and increasing the transmission obviously.

In this paper, we design, fabricate and experimentally characterize a broadband acoustic right-angle bend device in air. Perforated panels with various hole-sizes are used to construct the bend structure. Both the simulated and the experimental results verify that acoustic beam can be rotated effectively through the acoustic bend in a wide frequency range. Based on the Huygens-Fresnel principle, a metasurface structure is designed to generate a sound vortex beam in airborne environment. The metasurface is constructed by a thin planar plate perforated with a circular array of deep subwavelength resonators with desired phase and amplitude responses. The metasurface approach in making sound vortices is validated well by full-wave simulations and experimental measurements. Potential applications of such artificial spiral beams can be anticipated, as exemplified experimentally by the torque effect exerting on an absorbing disk.

Time reversal (T) invariant topological insulator is widely recognized as one of the fundamental discoveries in condensed matter physics, for which the most fascinating hallmark is perhaps a spin based topological protection, the total cancellation of scattering of conduction electrons with certain spins on matter surface. Recently, it has created a paradigm shift for topological insulators, from electronics to photonics, phononics as well as mechanics, bringing about not only involved new physics but also potential applications in robust wave transport. Despite the growing interests in realizing topologically protected acoustic wave transport, T-invariant acoustic topological insulator has not yet been achieved. Here, we report the first demonstration of acoustic topological insulator: a strongly coupled metamaterial ring lattice that supports one-way propagation of helical edge states under T-symmetry, backscattering immune to boundary abrupt variations. The very unique thing is the formation of spin-filtered interface states due to lattice dislocations. We report both experimentally and theoretically that the enhanced acoustic transmission can occur in the subwavelength region through a thin but stiff structured-plate without any opening. This exotic acoustic phenomenon is essentially distinct from the previous related studies originated from, either collectively or individually, the interaction of the incident wave with openings in previous structures. It is attributed to the structure-induced resonant excitation of the non-leaky Lamb modes that exist intrinsically in the uniform elastic plate.
