Search

Complementary to high-energy experimental efforts, indirect astrophysical searches of particles beyond the standard model have long been pursued. The present article follows the latter approach and considers, for the first time, the self-consistent treatment of the energy losses from dark flavoured particles produced in the decay of hyperons during a core-collapse supernova (CCSN). To this end, general relativistic supernova simulations in spherical symmetry are performed, featuring six-species Boltzmann neutrino transport, and covering the long-term evolution of the nascent remnant proto-neutron star (PNS) deleptonization for several tens of seconds. A well-calibrated hyperon equation of state (EOS) is therefore implemented into the supernova simulations and tested against the corresponding nucleonic model. It is found that supernova observables, such as the neutrino signal, are robustly insensitive to the appearance of hyperons for the simulation times considered in the present study. The presence of hyperons enables an additional channel for the appearance of dark sector particles, which is considered at the level of the $\Lambda$ hyperon decay. Assuming massless particles that escape the PNS after being produced, these channels expedite the deleptonizing PNS and the cooling behaviour. This, in turn, shortens the neutrino emission timescale. The present study confirms the previously estimated upper limits on the corresponding branching ratios for low and high mass PNS, by effectively reducing the neutrino emission timescale by a factor of two. We perform a combined analysis of stellar kinematics and line-of-sight accelerations of millisecond pulsars to investigate the mass contents of Omega Centauri. We consider multiple mass components: the visible photometric distribution, a central cluster of dark remnants, an intermediate-mass black hole, and a distribution of intermediate extension traced by the pulsars. By self-consistently incorporating multiple independent datasets, including the effects of different centers, we obtain significant constraints on these mass distributions. Our results strongly favor an extended central mass of ~ 2 - 3 x 10^5 Msun, emulating a cluster of heavy stellar remnants, over an IMBH, with a 3-sigma upper limit of 6 x 10^3 Msun on its mass. Pulsar timing observations provide significant constraints, favoring a central mass distribution that is ~ 20% more massive and extended. Notably, we observe a clear linear scaling between the pulsar distribution and stellar encounter rates, showing excellent agreement with the expectation from millisecond pulsar formation models and motivating a profile for their distribution, providing the first validation of its kind where positions are linked to their place of formation in globular clusters. Our findings highlight the effectiveness of this novel methodology in exploring the structure of star clusters, setting a promising precedent amid the advent of the rapidly growing number of observations and discoveries currently being experienced in this field.

Selective, accurate, fast, and with minimal usage of instrumentation has become paramount nowadays in areas of environmental monitoring. Here, we chemically modified fluorescent graphene quantum dots (GQDs) and trained a Machine Learning (ML) algorithm for the selective quantification of Hg2+ and Fe3+ ions present within real water samples. The probe is obtained by an electrosynthesis of CVD graphene in the presence of urea, followed by the functionalization with 1-nitroso-2-naphthol (NN). The functionalization with NN moieties dramatically improve selectivity and sensitivity toward Hg2+ and Fe3+, as demonstrated by LODs as low as 0.001 mg L-1 and 0.003 mg L-1; respectively. Time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) reveals that the NN molecules within the GQDs are responsible of the florescence emission of the probe. The emission spectra profiles exhibited distinct characteristics between Hg2+ and Fe3+ enabling the ML model to precisely quantify and differentiate between both analytes present in natural and drinking waters. The ML results were further validated by measurements via cold vapor-atomic fluorescence spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy. The efficiency of the ML model eliminates the necessity of extensive training values and validations, making it a reliable tool for precisely quantifying the presence of Fe and Hg ions in real water samples.

The study of the rare decays $B\to K^{(*)} \nu \bar\nu$ offers a window into the dynamics operating at the electroweak scale, allowing studies of the Standard Model and searches for heavy new physics. However, the analysis of these decays is also potentially sensitive to the on-shell production of new light bosons $X$ through the process $B\to K^{(*)} X$. In particular, Belle~II has recently measured $B^+\to K^+\nu\bar\nu$, finding a $2.8\sigma$ excess under the assumption of heavy new physics. Since this excess is rather localized in the kaon energy, a fit that includes the decay mode $B^+\to K^+ X$ to the kinematic distributions prefers $m_X\approx2\,$GeV with branching fraction Br$[B\to KX]=(8.8\pm2.5)\times 10^{-6}$ and a significance of $\approx3.6\sigma$. However, no excess was found in the BaBar measurements of $B\to K^{(*)} \nu \bar\nu$, and a global analysis of the Belle II and BaBar data leads to Br$[B\to KX]=(5.1\pm2.1)\times 10^{-6}$ with a reduced significance of $\approx2.4\sigma$. We then study various simplified dark-flavoured models and present a possible UV completion based on a gauged $B_3-L_3$ symmetry, highlighting the discovery potential of dedicated searches for $B\to K^{(*)}X$ at Belle II., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

In magnetic tunnel junctions based on iron oxide nanoparticles the disorder and the oxidation state of the surface spin as well as the nanoparticles functionalization play a crucial role in the magnetotransport properties. In this work, we report a systematic study of the effects of vacuum annealing on the structural, magnetic and transport properties of self-assembled ~10 nm Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The high temperature treatment (from 573 to 873 K) decomposes the organic coating into amorphous carbon, reducing the electrical resistivity of the assemblies by 4 orders of magnitude. At the same time, the 3Fe2+/(Fe3++Fe2+) ratio is reduced from 1.11 to 0.13 when the annealing temperature of the sample increases from 573 to 873 K, indicating an important surface oxidation. Although the 2 nm physical gap remains unchanged with the thermal treatment, a monotonous decrease of tunnel barrier width was obtained from the electron transport measurements when the annealing temperature increases, indicating an increment in the number of defects and hot-spots in the gap between the nanoparticles. This is reflected in the reduction of the spin dependent tunneling, which reduces the interparticle magnetoresistance. This work shows new insights about influence of the nanoparticle interfacial composition, as well their the spatial arrangement, on the tunnel transport of self-assemblies, and evidence the importance of optimizing the nanostructure fabrication for increasing the tunneling current without degrading the spin polarized current.

Proto-neutron stars formed during core-collapse supernovae are hot and dense environments that contain a sizable population of muons. If these interact with new long-lived particles with masses up to roughly 100 MeV, the latter can be produced and escape from the stellar plasma, causing an excessive energy loss constrained by observations of SN 1987A. In this article we calculate the emission of light dark fermions that are coupled to leptons via a new massive vector boson, and determine the resulting constraints on the general parameter space. We apply these limits to the gauged $L_\mu-L_\tau$ model with dark fermions, and show that the SN 1987A constraints exclude a significant portion of the parameter space targeted by future experiments. We also extend our analysis to generic effective four-fermion operators that couple dark fermions to muons, electrons, or neutrinos. We investigate phenomenologically the viability of fuzzy dark matter (FDM). We do this by confronting the predictions of the model, in particular, the formation of a solitonic core at the center of dark matter halos, with a homogeneous and robust sample of high-resolution rotation curves from the "LITTLE THINGS in 3D" catalog. This comprises a collection of isolated, dark matter dominated dwarf-irregular galaxies that provides an optimal benchmark for cosmological studies. We use a statistical framework based on Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques that allows us to extract relevant parameters such as the axion mass, the mass of the solitonic core, the mass of the dark matter halo and its concentration parameter with a rather loose set of priors except for the implementation of a core-halo relation that is predicted by simulations. The results of the fits are used to perform various diagnostics on the predictions of the model. FDM provides an excellent fit to the rotation curves of the "LITTLE THINGS in 3D" catalog, with axion masses determined from different galaxies clustering around $m_a\approx2\times10^{-23}$ eV. However, we find two major problems in our analysis. First, the data follow scaling relations of the properties of the core which are not consistent with the predictions of the soliton. This problem is particularly acute in the core radius - mass relation with a tension that, at face value, has a significance $\gtrsim5\sigma$. The second problem is related to the strong suppression of the linear power spectrum that is predicted by FDM for the axion mass preferred by the data. This can be constrained very conservatively by the galaxy counts in our sample, which leads to a tension exceeding again $5\sigma$. We compute the axion-pion scattering $a \pi \to \pi \pi$, relevant for the axion thermalization rate in the early universe, within unitarized NLO chiral perturbation theory. The latter extends the range of validity of the chiral expansion of axion-pion scattering and thus provides a crucial ingredient for the reliable determination of the relic density of thermal axions, whenever the axion decoupling temperature is below that of the QCD phase transition. Recent trends in robotic services propose offloading robot functionalities to the Edge to meet the strict latency requirements of networked robotics. However, the Edge is typically an expensive resource and sometimes the Cloud is also an option, thus, decreasing the cost. Following this idea, we propose Don't Let Me Down! (DLMD), an algorithm that promotes offloading robot functions to the Cloud when possible to minimize the consumption of Edge resources. Additionally, DLMD takes the appropriate migration, traffic steering, and radio handover decisions to meet robotic service requirements as strict latency constraints. In the paper, we formulate the optimization problem that DLMD aims to solve, compare DLMD performance against state of art, and perform stress tests to assess DLMD performance in small & large networks. The discrepancies between $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ data and the corresponding Standard Model predictions constitute the most significant hints for new physics (at the TeV scale or below) currently available. In fact, many scenarios that can account for these anomalies have been proposed in the literature. However, only a single light new physics explanation, i.e. with a mass below the $B$ meson scale, is possible: a light $Z^\prime$ boson. In this article, we point out that improved limits on $B\to K^{(*)}\nu\nu$, including the experimental sensitivities required for a proper treatment of the necessarily sizable $Z^\prime$ width, together with the forthcoming Belle~II analyses of $e^+e^-\to\mu^+\mu^-+{\rm invisible}$, can rule out a $Z^\prime$ explanation of $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ data with a mass below $\approx4\,$GeV. Importantly, such a light $Z^\prime$ is the only viable single particle solution to the $b\to s\ell^+\ell^-$ anomalies predicting $R(K^{(*)})>0$ in high $q^2$ bins, therefore providing an essential consistency test of data., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Rare meson decays are among the most sensitive probes of both heavy and light new physics. Among them, new physics searches using kaons benefit from their small total decay widths and the availability of very large datasets. On the other hand, useful complementary information is provided by hyperon decay measurements. We summarize the relevant phenomenological models and the status of the searches in a comprehensive list of kaon and hyperon decay channels. We investigate the potential of rare hyperon decays to probe the short distance structure in the $s\to d\nu\bar\nu$ and $s\to d\ell^+\ell^-$ transitions. Hyperon decays into neutrinos ($B_1\to B_2\nu\bar\nu$) can be reliably predicted by using form factors determined in baryon chiral perturbation theory. Their decay rates are sensitive to different short-distance operators, as compared to their kaon counterparts, and the corresponding branching fractions are in the range of $10^{-14}\sim10^{-13}$ in the standard model. In the context of the low-energy effective theory, we find that the anticipated BESIII measurements of the $B_1\to B_2\nu\bar\nu$ decays would lead to constraints on new physics in the purely axial vector $\bar d \gamma_\mu\gamma_5 s$ current that are stronger than the present limits from their kaon siblings $K\to \pi\pi\nu\bar\nu$. On the other hand, although hyperon decays into charged leptons are dominated by long-distance hadronic contributions, angular observable such as the leptonic forward-backward asymmetry is sensitive to the interference between long- and short-distance contributions. We discuss the sensitivity to new physics of a potential measurement of this observable in comparison with observables in the kaon decays $K_L\to\mu^+\mu^-$ and $K^+\to\pi^+\mu^+\mu^-$. We conclude that the current kaon bounds are a few orders of magnitude better than those that could be obtained from $\Sigma^+\to p\mu^+\mu^-$ except for two scenarios with new physics in the $(\bar d \gamma^\mu s)(\bar\ell\gamma_\mu\gamma_5\ell)$ and $(\bar d \gamma^\mu \gamma_5s)(\bar\ell\gamma_\mu\ell)$ currents. Dark sector particles at the GeV scale carrying baryon number provide an attractive framework for understanding the origin of dark matter and the matter-antimatter asymmetry of the universe. We demonstrate that dark decays of hadronic states containing strange quarks -- hyperons -- offer excellent prospects for discovering such dark baryons. Building up on novel calculations of the matrix elements relevant for hyperon dark decays, and in view of various collider, flavor, and astrophysical constraints, we determine the expected rates at hyperon factories like BESIII and LHCb. Motivated by renewed evidence for new physics in $b \to s\ell\ell$ transitions in the form of LHCb's new measurements of theoretically clean lepton-universality ratios and the purely leptonic $B_s\to\mu^+\mu^-$ decay, we quantify the combined level of discrepancy with the Standard Model and fit values of short-distance Wilson coefficients. A combination of the clean observables $R_K$, $R_{K^*}$, and $B_s\to \mu\mu$ alone results in a discrepancy with the Standard Model at $4.0\sigma$, up from $3.5\sigma$ in 2017. One-parameter scenarios with purely left-handed or with purely axial coupling to muons fit the data well and result in a $\sim 5 \sigma$ pull from the Standard Model. In a two-parameter fit of %$C_9$ and $C_{10}$, new-physics contributions with both vector and axial-vector couplings to muons the allowed region is much more restricted than in 2017, principally due to the much more precise result on $B_s \to \mu^+ \mu^-$, which probes the axial coupling to muons.Including angular observables data restricts the allowed region further.A by-product of our analysis is an updated average of $\text{BR}(B_s \to \mu^+ \mu^-) = (2.8\pm 0.3) \times 10^{-9}$., Comment: In the Appendix, we update the clean fits by considering the latest measurements of the branching fraction ratios $R_{K^0_s}$ and $R_{K^{*+}}$ by the LHCb Collaboration and show that two one-parameter scenarios and a two-parameter scenario fit the data well and result in a pull from the SM crossing the 5.0$\sigma$ threshold

Proto-neutron stars forming a few seconds after core-collapse supernovae are hot and dense environments where hyperons can be efficiently produced by weak processes. By making use of various state-of-the-art supernova simulations combined with the proper extensions of the equations of state including $\Lambda$ hyperons, we calculate the cooling of the star induced by the emission of dark bosons $X^0$ through the decay $\Lambda\to n X^0$. Comparing this novel energy-loss process to the neutrino cooling of SN 1987A allows us to set stringent constraints on massless dark photons and axions with flavor-violating couplings to quarks. A method to unitarize the scattering amplitude produced by infinite-range forces is developed and applied to Born terms. In order to apply $S$-matrix techniques, based on unitarity and analyticity, we first derive an $S$-matrix free of infrared divergences. This is achieved by removing a divergent phase factor due to the interactions mediated by the massless particles in the crossed channels, a procedure that is related to previous formalisms to treat infrared divergences. We apply this method in detail by unitarizing the Born terms for graviton-graviton scattering in pure gravity and we find a scalar graviton-graviton resonance with vacuum quantum numbers ($J^{PC}=0^{++}$) that we call the \textit{graviball}. Remarkably, this resonance is located below the Planck mass but deep in the complex $s$-plane (with $s$ the usual Mandelstam variable), so that its effects along the physical real $s$ axis peak for values significantly lower than this scale. We argue that the position and width of the graviball are reduced when including extra light fields in the theory. This could lead to phenomenological consequences in scenarios of quantum gravity with a large number of such fields or, in general, with a low-energy ultraviolet completion. We also apply this formalism to two non-relativistic potentials with exact known solutions for the scattering amplitudes: Coulomb scattering and an energy-dependent potential obtained from the Coulomb one with a zero at threshold. This latter case shares the same $J=0$ partial-wave projected Born term as the graviton-graviton case, except for a global factor. The meson decays $B\to D\tau\nu$ and $B\to D^* \tau \nu$ are sensitive probes of the $b\to c\tau\nu$ transition. In this work we present a complete framework to obtain the maximum information on the physics of $B\to D^{(*)}\tau\nu$ with polarized $\tau$ leptons and unpolarized $D^{(*)}$ mesons. Focusing on the hadronic decays $\tau\to \pi\nu$ and $\tau\to\rho\nu$, we show how to extract seven $\tau$ asymmetries from a fully differential analysis of the final-state kinematics. At Belle II with $50~\text{ab}^{-1}$ of data, these asymmetries could potentially be measured with percent level statistical uncertainty. This would open a new window into possible new physics contributions in $b\to c\tau\nu$ and would allow us to decipher its Lorentz and gauge structure., Comment: 20 pages + appendices, 5 figures

We present a systematic survey of possible short-distance new-physics effects in (semi)leptonic charged- and neutral-current charmed meson decays. Using the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) to analyze the most relevant experimental data at low and high energies, we demonstrate a striking complementarity between charm decays and high invariant mass lepton tails at the LHC. Interestingly enough, high-$p_T$ Drell-Yan data offer competitive constraints on most new physics scenarios. Furthermore, the full set of correlated constraints from $K$, $\pi$ and $\tau$ decays imposed by $SU(2)_L$ gauge invariance is considered. Axion models with generation-dependent Peccei-Quinn charges can lead to flavor-changing neutral currents, thus motivating QCD axion searches at precision flavor experiments. We rigorously derive limits on the most general effective flavor-violating couplings from current measurements and assess their discovery potential. For two-body decays we use available experimental data to derive limits on $q\to q' a$ decay rates for all flavor transitions. Axion contributions to neutral-meson mixing are calculated in a systematic way using chiral perturbation theory and operator product expansion. We also discuss in detail baryonic decays and three-body meson decays, which can lead to the best search strategies for some of the couplings. For instance, a strong limit on the $\Lambda\to n a$ transition can be derived from the supernova SN 1987A. In the near future, dedicated searches for $q\to q' a$ decays at ongoing experiments could potentially test Peccei-Quinn breaking scales up to $10^{12}$ GeV at NA62 or KOTO, and up to $10^{9}$ GeV at Belle II or BES III., Comment: 23 pages, 4 tables, 4 figures

We revisit the status of the new-physics interpretations of the anomalies in semileptonic $B$ decays in light of the new data reported by Belle on the lepton-universality ratios $R_{D^{(*)}}$ using the semileptonic tag and on the longitudinal polarization of the $D^*$ in $B\to D^*\tau\nu$, $F_L^{D^*}$. The preferred solutions involve new left-handed currents or tensor contributions. Interpretations with pure right-handed currents are disfavored by the LHC data, while pure scalar models are disfavored by the upper limits derived either from the LHC or from the $B_c$ lifetime. The observable $F_L^{D^*}$ also gives an important constraint leading to the exclusion of large regions of parameter space. Finally, we investigate the sensitivity of different observables to the various scenarios and conclude that a measurement of the tau polarization in the decay mode $B\to D\tau\nu$ would effectively discriminate among them., Comment: matches publised version

We investigate the crossing-symmetry relation between $b\to c\tau^-\bar\nu$ decay and $b\bar c\to \tau^-\bar\nu$ scattering to derive direct correlations of New Physics in semi-tauonic $B$-meson decays and the mono-tau signature at the LHC ($pp\to\tau_h X$ + MET). Using an exhaustive set of effective operators and heavy mediators we find that the current ATLAS and CMS data constrain scenarios addressing anomalies in $B$-decays. Pure tensor solutions, completed by leptoquark, and right-handed solutions, completed by $W^\prime_R$ or leptoquark, are challenged by our analysis. Furthermore, the sensitivity that will be achieved in the high-luminosity phase of the LHC will probe $all$ the possible scenarios that explain the anomalies. Finally, we note that the LHC is also competitive in the $b\to u$ transitions and bounds in some cases are currently better than those from $B$ decays., Comment: No comments

This article summarizes recent developments in $B\to D^{(\ast)}\tau\nu$ decays. We explain how to extract the tau lepton's production properties from the kinematics of its decay products. The focus is on hadronic tau decays, which are most sensitive to the tau polarizations. We introduce a set of clockwork models of flavor that can naturally explain the large hierarchies of the Standard Model quark masses and mixing angles. Since the clockwork only contains chains of new vector-like fermions without any other dynamical fields, the flavor constraints allow for relatively light new physics scale. For two benchmarks with gear masses just above 1 TeV, allowed by flavor constraints, we discuss the collider searches and the possible ways of reconstructing gear spectra at the LHC. We also examine the similarities and differences with the other common solutions to the SM flavor puzzle, i.e., with the Froggatt-Nielsen models, where we identify a new {\it clockworked } version, and with the Randall-Sundrum models.

Recent anomalies in $B\to K^{(*)}\ell\ell$ meson decays are consistent with exchange of a heavy $Z'$ vector boson. Here we try to connect such new physics to understanding the origin of flavor, by gauging generation number. Phenomenological and theoretical considerations suggest that the smallest viable flavor symmetry (not including any extra U(1) factors) is chiral ${\rm SU(3)}_L\times{\rm SU(3)}_R$, which acts only on generation indices and does not distinguish between quarks and leptons. Spontaneous breaking of the symmetry gives rise to the standard model Yukawa matrices, and masses for the 16 $Z'$-like gauge bosons, one of which is presumed to be light enough to explain the $B\to K^{(*)}\ell\ell$ anomalies. We perform a bottom-up study of this framework, showing that it is highly constrained by LHC dilepton searches, meson mixing, $Z$ decays and CKM unitarity. Similar anomalies are predicted for semileptonic decays of $B$ to lighter mesons, with excesses in the $ee,\tau\tau$ channels and deficits in $\mu\mu$, but no deviation in $\nu\nu$. We study the renormalization group evolution (RGE) of new physics contributions to (semi)leptonic charged-current meson decays, focusing on operators involving a chirality flip at the quark level. We calculate their evolution under electroweak and electromagnetic interactions, including also the three-loop QCD running and provide numerical formulas that allow us to connect the values of the corresponding Wilson coefficients from scales at the TeV to the low-energy scales. The large mixing of the tensor operator into the (pseudo)scalar ones has important phenomenological implications, such as the RGE of new physics bounds obtained from light quark decays or in $b\to c\ell\nu$ transitions. For instance, we study scenarios involving tensor effective operators, which have been proposed in the literature to address the $B$-decay anomalies, most notably those concerning the $R_{D^{(*)}}$ ratios. Tests of lepton-universality as rate ratios in $b\to s \ell\ell$ transitions can be predicted very accurately in the Standard Model. The deficits with respect to expectations reported by the LHCb experiment in muon-to-electron ratios of the $B\to K^{(*)}\ell\ell$ decay rates thus point to genuine manifestations of lepton non-universal new physics. In this paper, we analyse these measurements in the context of effective field theory. First, we discuss the interplay of the different operators in $R_K$ and $R_{K^*}$ and provide predictions for $R_{K^*}$ in the Standard Model and in new-physics scenarios that can explain $R_K$. We also provide approximate numerical formulas for these observables in bins of interest as functions of the relevant Wilson coefficients. Secondly, we perform frequentist fits to $R_{K}$ and $R_{K^*}$. The SM disagrees with these measurements at $3.7\sigma$ significance. We find excellent fits in scenarios with combinations of $\mathcal O_{9(10)}^\ell=\bar s\gamma^\mu b_L~\ell\gamma_\mu(\gamma_5) \ell$ operators, with pulls relative to the Standard Model in the region of $4\sigma$. An important conclusion of our analysis is that a lepton-specific contribution to $\mathcal O_{10}$ is essential to understand the data. Under the hypothesis that new-physics couples selectively to the muons, we also present fits to other $b\to s\mu\mu$ data with a conservative error assessment, and comment on more general scenarios. Finally, we discuss new lepton universality ratios that, if new physics is the origin of the observed discrepancy, should contribute to the statistically significant discovery of new physics in the near future., Comment: Matches published version

In semi-leptonic $B$ decays with a tau lepton, features of the production process are imprinted on the tau helicity states. Since the tau momentum cannot be fully reconstructed experimentally, the available information on the tau properties is encoded in its visible decay products. Focusing on the process $B\to D\tau\nu$, we find explicit relations between the tau properties and the kinematics of the charged particles in the decays $\tau\to\pi\nu$, $\tau\to\rho\nu$, and $\tau\to\ell\nu\bar{\nu}$. In particular, we show that the perpendicular polarization, $P_\perp$, and the forward-backward asymmetry, $A_\tau$, of the tau lepton can simultaneously be extracted from an angular asymmetry of the charged particle against the $D$ meson. For the most sensitive decay channel, $\tau\to\pi\nu$, we expect a relative statistical precision of about $10\%$ for $P_\perp$ and $A_\tau$ in a measurement based on $50\,$ab$^{-1}$ of data at BELLE II., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We investigate a new constraint on new-physics interpretations of the anomalies observed in $B\to D^{(*)}\tau\nu$ decays making use of the lifetime of the $B_c^-$ meson. A constraint is obtained by demanding that the rate for $B_c^-\to\tau^-\bar\nu$ does not exceed the fraction of the total width that is allowed by the calculation of the lifetime in the standard model. This leads to a very strong bound on new-physics scenarios involving scalar operators since they lift the slight, but not negligible, chiral suppression of the $B_c^-\to\tau^-\bar\nu$ amplitude in the standard model. The new constraint renders a scalar interpretation of the enhancement measured in $R_{D^*}$ implausible, including explanations implementing extra Higgs doublets or certain classes of leptoquarks. We analyze the decays $K\to\pi\ell\nu$ and $P\to\ell\nu$ ($P=K,\pi$, $\ell=e,\,\mu$) using a low-energy Effective-Field-Theory approach to parametrize New Physics and study the complementarity with baryon $\beta$ decays. We then provide a road map for a global analysis of the experimental data, with all the Wilson coefficients simultaneously, and perform a fit leading to numerical bounds for them and for $V_{us}$. A prominent result of our analysis is a reinterpretation of the well-known $V_{ud}-V_{us}$ diagram as a strong constraint on new physics. We investigate the experimentally-accessible kinematic distributions of the $\bar B\to D^{(*)}\tau^-(\to\ell^-\bar\nu_\ell\nu_\tau)\bar\nu_\tau$ decays. Specifically, we study the decay rates as functions of the $B\to D^{(*)}$ transferred squared momentum, the energy of the final charged lepton and the angle of its 3-momentum relative to the 3-momentum of the recoiling $D^{(*)}$. The angular distribution allows to introduce new observables, like a forward-backward asymmetry, which are complementary to the total rates. We investigate the decays of the excited $(b\bar q)$ mesons as probes of the short-distance structure of the weak $\Delta B=1$ transitions. These states are unstable under the electromagnetic or strong interactions although their widths are typically suppressed by phase space. As compared to the pseudoscalar $B$ meson, the purely leptonic decays of the vector $B^*$ are not chirally suppressed and are sensitive to different combinations of the underlying weak effective operators. An interesting example is $B^*_s\to \ell^+\ell^-$, which has a rate that can be accurately predicted in the standard model. The branching fraction is $\mathcal{B}\sim10^{-11}$, irrespective of the lepton flavor and where the main uncertainty stems from the unmeasured and theoretically not-well known $B_s^*$ width. We discuss the prospects for producing this decay mode at the LHC and explore the possibility of measuring the $B_s^*\to\ell\ell$ amplitude, instead, through scattering experiments at the $B_s^*$ resonance peak. Finally we also discuss the charged-current $B_{u,c}^*\to\ell\nu$ decay which can provide complementary information on the $b\to u\ell\nu$ and $b\to c\ell\nu$ transitions., Comment: 21 pages

Anomalies in (semi)leptonic $B$-meson decays present interesting patterns that might be revealing the shape of the new physics to come. In order to understand the experimental data, we explore symmetry arguments that lead to the hypothesis of minimal flavor violation. In particular, under the assumption of negligible neutrino mass effects in charged lepton processes, the presence of lepton universality violation without lepton flavor violation naturally arises. This can account for a deficit of $B^+\to K^+\mu\mu$ over $B^+\to K^+ee$ decays with new physics coupled predominantly to muons and a new physics scale of a few TeV. A prediction of this scenario is the modification of processes involving the third generation. In particular, accounting for the above ratio implies a large enhancement, by a factor $\sim10^3$ with respect to the standard model, of all the $b\to s\tau\tau$ decay rates. Although these are still below current experimental limits, they should be easily at reach in future experiments at $B$-factories. Another important consequence is the prediction of sizable effects in charge-current $B$ tauonic decays which could also explain the enhancements that have been observed in the $B\to D^{(*)}\tau\bar \nu$ and $B^-\to\tau^-\bar \nu$ decays. For the most part, the study is carried out in an effective field theory framework with an underlying $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ symmetry that emphasizes the model-independent correlations arising between low- and high-energy observables. For example, a connection between $B$-decays and top physics is pointed out. To complement the discussion, all possible (spin 0 and 1) leptoquark models are matched to the low-energy field theory so that the effective analysis can be used to survey these candidates for new physics. We investigate the discovery potential of semileptonic hyperon decays in terms of searches of new physics at teraelectronvolt scales. These decays are controlled by a small $SU(3)$-flavor breaking parameter that allows for systematic expansions and accurate predictions in terms of a reduced dependence on hadronic form factors. We find that muonic modes are very sensitive to non-standard scalar and tensor contributions and demonstrate that these could provide a powerful synergy with direct searches of new physics at the LHC., Comment: v2. We critically examine the potential to disentangle Standard Model (SM) and New Physics (NP) in $B \to K^* \mu^+\mu^-$ and $B\to K^* e^+ e^-$ decays, focusing on $(i)$ the LHCb anomaly, $(ii)$ the search for right-handed currents, and $(iii)$ lepton-universality violation. Restricting ourselves to the large-recoil region, we advocate a parameterisation of the hadronic matrix elements that separates model-independent information about nonperturbative QCD from the results of model calculations. We clarify how to estimate corrections to the heavy-quark limit that would generate a right-handed (virtual) photon in the $b\to s\gamma$ contribution to the decay. We then apply this approach to the discussion of various sets of observables of increasing theoretical cleanness. First, we show that angular observables in the optimized $P_i^{(\prime)}$ basis are, in general, not robust against the long-distance QCD effects. While a fit to data favours a NP contribution to the semileptonic operators of the type $\delta C_9\simeq-1.5$, this comes at a relatively small statistical significance of $\lesssim2 \sigma$, once power corrections are properly accounted for. Second, two of these observables, $P_1$ and $P_3^{CP}$ are particularly clean at very low $q^2$ and sensitive probes of right-handed quark currents. We discuss their potential to set stringent bounds on the Wilson coefficient $C_7^\prime$, especially using data of the electronic mode. Finally, in light of the recent hint of lepton-universality violation in $B^+\to K^+\ell\ell$, we introduce and investigate new lepton-universality observables involving angular observables of the muonic and electronic modes and their zero crossings, and show that, if the effect is of the size suggested by experiment, these can clearly distinguish between different NP explanations in terms of underlying semileptonic operators., Comment: We recalculated the results with some updated theoretical input parameters which cause mild changes in some central values and a slight increase of the significance of tensions with the SM. New physics effects in $B$ decays are routinely modeled through operators invariant under the strong and electromagnetic gauge symmetries. Assuming the scale for new physics is well above the electro-weak scale, we further require invariance under the full Standard-Model gauge symmetry group. Retaining up to dimension-6 operators, we unveil new constraints between different new-physics operators that are assumed to be independent in the standard phenomenological analyses. We discuss the consequences of the approximate conservation of the vector and axial currents for the hadronic matrix elements appearing in beta decay if non-standard interactions are present. In particular the isovector (pseudo)scalar charge g_S(P) of the nucleon can be related to the difference (sum) of the nucleon masses in the absence of electromagnetic effects. Using recent determinations of these quantities from phenomenological and lattice QCD studies we obtain the accurate values g_S=1.02(11) and g_P=349(9) in the MS-bar scheme at mu=2 GeV. The consequences for searches of non-standard scalar interactions in nuclear beta decays are studied, finding epsilon_S=0.0012(24) at 90%CL, which is significantly more stringent than current LHC bounds and previous low-energy bounds using less precise g_S values. We argue that our results could be rapidly improved with updated computations and the direct calculation of certain ratios in lattice QCD. Finally we discuss the pion-pole enhancement of g_P, which makes beta decays much more sensitive to non-standard pseudoscalar interactions than previously thought., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We investigate rare semileptonic \bar B -> \bar K^* l^+ l^- decays, providing a comprehensive treatment of theoretical uncertainties in the low-q^2 region as needed for interpreting current and future LHCb and B-factory data in terms of the new physics search. We go beyond the usual focus on form-factor uncertainties, paying proper attention to non-factorizable terms. A central point is the systematic exploitation of the V-A structure of SM weak interactions, which leads to the suppression of two helicity amplitudes and some of the angular coefficients. We review how this works at the level of (helicity) form factors, and show that the hierarchies extend to non-factorizable terms. For virtual charm effects, we give an argument for it in terms of light-cone QCD sum rules that continues to hold at the level of "long-distance" Lambda_QCD^2/m_c^2 power corrections, reducing an important source of theoretical uncertainty in any \bar B, \bar B_s -> V l^+ l^- (or \bar B -> V gamma) decay. The contributions of the remaining hadronic weak Hamiltonian respect a similar hierarchy. We employ a resonance model to preclude (in the \bar B -> \bar K^* case) large long-distance corrections to this. A phenomenological part pays particular attention to the region of lowest dilepton mass, 4 m_l^2 <= q^2 <= 2 GeV^2. Two observables remain theoretically clean, implying a (theoretical) sensitivity to the real (imaginary) part of the "right-handed" Wilson coefficient C_7' to 10% (1%) of C_7^SM, both in the muonic and the electronic mode.
