Mouse and human brains have different functions that depend on their neuronal networks. In this study, we analyzed nanometer-scale three-dimensional structures of brain tissues of the mouse medial prefrontal cortex and compared them with structures of the human anterior cingulate cortex. The obtained results indicated that mouse neuronal somata are smaller and neurites are thinner than those of human neurons. These structural features allow mouse neurons to be integrated in the limited space of the brain, though thin neurites should suppress distal connections according to cable theory. We implemented this mouse-mimetic constraint in convolutional layers of a generative adversarial network (GAN) and a denoising diffusion implicit model (DDIM), which were then subjected to image generation tasks using photo datasets of cat faces, cheese, human faces, and birds. The mouse-mimetic GAN outperformed a standard GAN in the image generation task using the cat faces and cheese photo datasets, but underperformed for human faces and birds. The mouse-mimetic DDIM gave similar results, suggesting that the nature of the datasets affected the results. Analyses of the four datasets indicated differences in their image entropy, which should influence the number of parameters required for image generation. The preferences of the mouse-mimetic AIs coincided with the impressions commonly associated with mice. We consider a free boundary problem for the heat equation with a given non-negative external heat source. On the free boundary, we impose the zero Dirichlet condition and the fixed normal derivative so that heat escapes from the boundary. In various settings, we show that there exist no solutions when the initial temperature equals the fixed temperature no matter where the initial location of the free boundary is given provided that the external heat source is bounded from above. This study proposes a simple controller design approach to achieve a class of robustness, the so-called iso-damping property. The proposed approach can be executed using only one-shot input/output data. An accurate mathematical model of a controlled plant is not required. The model-reference control problem is defined to achieve the desired closed-loop specifications, including the iso-damping, and the reference model is designed on the basis of fractional-order calculus. The optimization problem for the model-reference control is formulated using the one-shot input/output data while considering the bounded-input bounded-output (BIBO) stability from a bounded reference input to a bounded output. The iso-damping robust controller is obtained by solving the optimization problem. The representative advantages of the proposed approach over the conventional methods are the simplicity, practicality, and reliability from the viewpoint of the unnecessity of the plant model and explicit consideration of the BIBO stability from a bounded reference input to a bounded output. We propose edit operation based lexically constrained decoding for sentence simplification. In sentence simplification, lexical paraphrasing is one of the primary procedures for rewriting complex sentences into simpler correspondences. While previous studies have confirmed the efficacy of lexically constrained decoding on this task, their constraints can be loose and may lead to sub-optimal generation. We address this problem by designing constraints that replicate the edit operations conducted in simplification and defining stricter satisfaction conditions. In this study, we propose a method that distils representations of word meaning in context from a pre-trained masked language model in both monolingual and crosslingual settings. Word representations are the basis for context-aware lexical semantics and unsupervised semantic textual similarity (STS) estimation. Different from existing approaches, our method does not require human-annotated corpora nor updates of the parameters of the pre-trained model. The latter feature is appealing for practical scenarios where the off-the-shelf pre-trained model is a common asset among different applications. Specifically, our method learns to combine the outputs of different hidden layers of the pre-trained model using self-attention. Our auto-encoder based training only requires an automatically generated corpus. To evaluate the performance of the proposed approach, we performed extensive experiments using various benchmark tasks. The results on the monolingual tasks confirmed that our representations exhibited a competitive performance compared to that of the previous study for the context-aware lexical semantic tasks and outperformed it for STS estimation. The results of the crosslingual tasks revealed that the proposed method largely improved crosslingual word representations of multilingual pre-trained models.

In this paper, we consider the self-affinity of planar curves. It is regarded as an important property to characterize the log-aesthetic curves which have been studied as reference curves or guidelines for designing aesthetic shapes in CAD systems. We reformulate the two different self-affinities proposed in the development of log-aesthetic curves. We give rigorous proof that one self-affinity actually characterizes log-aesthetic curves, while another one characterizes parabolas. We then propose a new self-affinity which, in equiaffine geometry, characterizes the constant curvature curves (the quadratic curves). We introduce a novel laser-scanning optical microscopy technique that employs optical-frequency-comb (OFC) lasers. This method facilitates multimodal spectroscopic imaging by analyzing interferograms produced via a dual-comb spectroscopic approach. Such interferograms capture comprehensive light information, including amplitude, phase, polarization, frequency, and time of flight information, enabling multimodal imaging from a single measurement. Inverse kinematics is an important and challenging problem in the operation of industrial manipulators. This study proposes a simple inverse kinematics calculation scheme for an industrial serial manipulator. The proposed technique can calculate appropriate values of the joint variables to realize the desired end-effector position and orientation while considering the motion costs of each joint. Two scalar functions are defined for the joint variables: one is to evaluate the end-effector position and orientation, whereas the other is to evaluate the motion efficiency of the joints. By combining the two scalar functions, the inverse kinematics calculation of the manipulator is formulated as a numerical optimization problem. Furthermore, a simple algorithm for solving the inverse kinematics via the aforementioned optimization is constructed on the basis of the simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation with a norm-limited update vector (NLSPSA). The proposed scheme considers not only the accuracy of the position and orientation of the end-effector but also the efficiency of the robot movement. Therefore, it yields a practical result of the inverse problem. Moreover, the proposed algorithm is simple and easy to implement owing to the high calculation efficiency of NLSPSA. This study proposes a one-shot data-driven tuning method for a fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) controller. The proposed method tunes the FOPID controller in the model-reference control formulation. A loss function is defined to evaluate the match between a given reference model and the closed-loop response while explicitly considering the closed-loop stability. A loss function value is based on the fictitious reference signal computed using the input/output data. Model matching is achieved via loss function minimization. The proposed method is simple and practical: it needs only one-shot input/output data of a plant (no plant model required), considers the bounded-input bounded-output stability of the closed-loop system from a bounded reference input to a bounded output, and automatically determines the appropriate parameter value via optimization. Translation quality estimation (TQE) is the task of predicting translation quality without reference translations. Due to the enormous cost of creating training data for TQE, only a few translation directions can benefit from supervised training. To address this issue, unsupervised TQE methods have been studied. In this paper, we extensively investigate the usefulness of synthetic TQE data and pre-trained multilingual encoders in unsupervised sentence-level TQE, both of which have been proven effective in the supervised training scenarios. Our experiment on WMT20 and WMT21 datasets revealed that this approach can outperform other unsupervised TQE methods on high- and low-resource translation directions in predicting post-editing effort and human evaluation score, and some zero-resource translation directions in predicting post-editing effort.

We consider the configuration space of points on the two-dimensional sphere that satisfy a specific system of quadratic equations. We construct periodic orbits in this configuration space using elliptic theta functions and show that they satisfy semi-discrete analogues of mKdV and sine-Gordon equations. The configuration space we investigate corresponds to the state space of a linkage mechanism known as the Kaleidocycle, and the constructed orbits describe the characteristic motion of the Kaleidocycle. Our approach is founded on the relationship between the deformation of spatial curves and integrable systems, offering an intriguing example where an integrable system generates an orbit in the space of real solutions to polynomial equations defined by geometric constraints.

One of the key enablers for the realization of a variety of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-based systems is the high-performance communication system linking many UAVs and ground station. We have proposed a spectrum-efficient full-duplex directional-antennas-equipped multi-UAV communication system with low hardware complexity to address the issues of low spectrum efficiency caused by co-channel interference in areal channels. In this paper, by using the prototype system including UAVs and ground station, field experiments are carried out to confirm the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed system's key feature, i.e., co-channel interference cancellation among UAVs by directional antennas and UAV relative position control, instead of energy-consuming dedicated self-interference cancellers on UAVs in traditional full-duplex systems. Both uplink and downlink performance are tested. Specially, in downlink experiment, channel power of interference between a pair of two UAVs is measured when UAVs are in different positional relationships. Controllable text simplification is a crucial assistive technique for language learning and teaching. One of the primary factors hindering its advancement is the lack of a corpus annotated with sentence difficulty levels based on language ability descriptions. To address this problem, we created the CEFR-based Sentence Profile (CEFR-SP) corpus, containing 17k English sentences annotated with the levels based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages assigned by English-education professionals. In addition, we propose a sentence-level assessment model to handle unbalanced level distribution because the most basic and highly proficient sentences are naturally scarce. In the experiments in this study, our method achieved a macro-F1 score of 84.5% in the level assessment, thus outperforming strong baselines employed in readability assessment., Comment: EMNLP 2022

We present an algorithm to fair a given planar curve by a log-aesthetic curve (LAC). We show how a general LAC segment can be uniquely characterized by seven parameters and present a method of parametric approximation based on this fact. This work aims to provide tools to be used in reverse engineering for computer aided geometric design. Finally, we show an example of usage by applying this algorithm to the point data obtained from 3D scanning a car's roof.

We construct the fine moduli space of log abelian varieties with PEL structure, which gives a toroidal compactification of the moduli space of abelian varieties with PEL structure.

In this paper we give a solution formula for the two-phase Stokes equations with and without surface tension and gravity in the whole space with flat interface. The solution formula has already considered by Shibata-Shimizu. However we reconstruct the formula so that we are able to prove resolvent estimate and maximal regularity estimate. In the previous work, they needed to assume additional conditions on normal components. We also take care of normal components, while the assumption becomes weaker than before. In response to the declining population and aging infrastructure in Japan, local governments are implementing compact city policies such as the location normalization plan. To optimize the reorganization of urban public infrastructure, it is important to provide detailed and accurate forecasts of the distribution of urban populations and households. However, many local governments do not have the necessary data and forecasting capability. Moreover, current forecasts of gender- and age-based population data only exist at the municipal level, and household data are only available by family type at the prefecture level. Meanwhile, the accuracy is limited with an assumption of same change rate of population in all municipalities and within each city. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop an agent-based microsimulation household transition model, with the household as the unit and agent, and household data was estimated for all cities in Japan from 2015. Estimated household data comprised the family type, house type, and address, age, and gender of household members, obtained from the national census, and building data. The resulting household transition model was used to forecast the attributes of each household every five years. Simulations in Toyama and Shizuoka Prefectures, Japan from 1980 to 2010 provided highly accurate estimates of municipal-level population by age and household volume by family type. The proposed model was also applied to predict the future distribution of disappearing villages and vacant houses in Japan.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)-based applications, such as surveillance systems and wireless relays, are attracting increasing attention from academia and industrial fields. The high-performance aerial communication system is one of the key enablers for them. However, due to the low attenuation of radio waves in the air-to-ground channels, the interference between aerial and terrestrial communication systems would significantly deteriorate their communication performance and greatly limit the potential UAV applications. To address the problem, in this paper, the spectrum sharing strategy between a multiple UAV communication system, in which both UAVs and ground station (GS) are equipped with directional antennas, and terrestrial systems is proposed. The GS position is selected and the flyable areas of the UAVs using certain spectrum resources are defined in advance using prior knowledge from spectrum monitoring on terrestrial communication systems to minimize interference and maximize the flyable areas of the UAVs instead of the low-efficient dynamic channel sensing and allocation for interference elimination. The simulations are conducted through a case study of the spectrum sharing between a multi-UAV video transmission system and the terrestrial wireless local area network (WLAN) system in the 5.7GHz band. We prove resolvent $L_p$ estimates and maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity estimates for the Stokes equations with Dirichlet, Neumann and Robin boundary conditions in the half space. Each solution is constructed by a Fourier multiplier of $x'$-direction and an integral of $x_N$-direction. We decompose the solution such that the symbols of the Fourier multipliers are bounded and holomorphic. We see that the operator norms are dominated by a homogeneous function of order $-1$ for $x_N$-direction. The basis are Weis's operator-valued Fourier multiplier theorem and a boundedness of a kernel operator. We give a new simple approach to get maximal regularity in the half space., Comment: 31 pages

We report multiwavelength observations of the gravitationally lensed blazar QSO B0218+357 in 2016-2020. Optical, X-ray and GeV flares were detected. The contemporaneous MAGIC observations do not show significant very-high-energy (VHE, >= 100 GeV) gamma-ray emission. The lack of enhancement in radio emission measured by OVRO indicates the multi-zone nature of the emission from this object. We constrain the VHE duty cycle of the source to be < 16 2014-like flares per year (95% confidence). For the first time for this source, a broadband low-state SED is constructed with a deep exposure up to the VHE range. A flux upper limit on the low-state VHE gamma-ray emission of an order of magnitude below that of the 2014 flare is determined. The X-ray data are used to fit the column density of (8.10 +- 0.93 stat ) x 10^21 cm^-2 of the dust in the lensing galaxy. VLBI observations show a clear radio core and jet components in both lensed images, yet no significant movement of the components is seen. The radio measurements are used to model the source-lens-observer geometry and determine the magnifications and time delays for both components. The quiescent emission is modeled with the high-energy bump explained as a combination of synchrotron-self-Compton and external Compton emission from a region located outside of the broad line region. We construct a method to fair a given discrete planar curve by using the integrable discrete analogue of Euler's elastica, which is a discrete version of the approximation algorithm presented by D. To elucidate the key factor for the quantitative prediction of the shear-thickening in suspensions in viscoelastic fluids, direct numerical simulations of many-particle suspensions in a multi-mode Oldroyd-B fluid are performed using the smoothed profile method. Suspension flow under simple shear flow is solved under periodic boundary conditions by using Lees--Edwards boundary conditions for particle dynamics and a time-dependent oblique coordinate system that evolves with mean shear flow for fluid dynamics. Semi-dilute many-particle suspensions up to a particle volume fraction of 0.1 are investigated. The presented numerical results regarding the bulk rheological properties of the shear-thickening behavior agree quantitatively with recent experimental results of semi-dilute suspensions in a Boger fluid. The presented result clarifies that an accurate estimation of the first normal stress difference of the matrix in the shear-rate range where the shear-thickening starts to occur is crucial for the quantitative prediction of the suspension shear-thickening in a Boger fluid matrix at around the Weissenberg number $\rm{Wi}=1$ by an Oldroyd-B model. Additionally, the effect of suspension microstructures on the suspension viscosity is examined. The paper concludes with a discussion on how the flow pattern and the elastic stress development change with the volume fraction and Weissenberg number.

PSR J0218+4232 is one of the most energetic millisecond pulsars known and has long been considered as one of the best candidates for very high-energy (VHE; >100 GeV) gamma-ray emission. Using 11.5 years of Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) data between 100 MeV and 870 GeV, and ~90 hours of MAGIC observations in the 20 GeV to 20 TeV range, we have searched for the highest energy gamma-ray emission from PSR J0218+4232. Based on the analysis of the LAT data, we find evidence for pulsed emission above 25 GeV, but see no evidence for emission above 100 GeV (VHE) with MAGIC. We present the results of searches for gamma-ray emission, along with theoretical modeling, to interpret the lack of VHE emission. We conclude that, based on the experimental observations and theoretical modeling, it will remain extremely challenging to detect VHE emission from PSR J0218+4232 with the current generation of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACTs), and maybe even with future ones, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA)., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, Accepted to ApJ

We report here on the first multi-wavelength (MWL) campaign on the blazar TXS 1515-273, undertaken in 2019 and extending from radio to very-high-energy gamma rays (VHE). Up until now, this blazar had not been the subject of any detailed MWL observations. It has a rather hard photon index at GeV energies and was considered a candidate extreme high-synchrotronpeaked source. MAGIC observations resulted in the first-time detection of the source in VHE with a statistical significance of 7.6$\sigma$. The average integral VHE flux of the source is 6 $\pm$ 1% of the Crab nebula flux above 400 GeV. X-ray coverage was provided by Swift-XRT, XMMNewton, and NuSTAR. The long continuous X-ray observations were separated by $\sim$ 9 h, both showing clear hour scale flares. In the XMM-Newton data, both the rise and decay timescales are longer in the soft X-ray than in the hard X-ray band, indicating the presence of a particle cooling regime. The X-ray variability timescales were used to constrain the size of the emission region and the strength of the magnetic field. The data allowed us to determine the synchrotron peak frequency and classify the source as a flaring high, but not extreme, synchrotron peaked object. Considering the constraints and variability patterns from the X-ray data, we model the broad-band spectral energy distribution. We applied a simple one-zone model, which could not reproduce the radio emission and the shape of the optical emission, and a two-component leptonic model with two interacting components, enabling us to reproduce the emission from radio to VHE band.

We present a detailed characterisation and theoretical interpretation of the broadband emission of the paradigmatic TeV blazar Mrk 421, with special focus on the multi-band flux correlations. The dataset has been collected through an extensive multiwavelength campaign organised between 2016 December and 2017 June. The instruments involved are MAGIC, FACT, Fermi-LAT, Swift, GASP-WEBT, OVRO, Medicina and Mets\"ahovi. Additionally, four deep exposures (several hours long) with simultaneous MAGIC and NuSTAR observations allowed a precise measurement of the falling segments of the two spectral components. The very-high-energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) gamma rays and X-rays are positively correlated at zero time lag, but the strength and characteristics of the correlation change substantially across the various energy bands probed. The VHE versus X-ray fluxes follow different patterns, partly due to substantial changes in the Compton dominance during a few days without a simultaneous increase in the X-ray flux (i.e. orphan gamma-ray activity). Studying the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) during the days including NuSTAR observations, we show that these changes can be explained within a one-zone leptonic model with a blob that increases its size over time. Our multi-band correlation study also hints at an anti-correlation between UV/optical and X-ray at a significance higher than 3 sigmas. A VHE flare observed on 2017 February 4 shows gamma-ray variability on multi-hour timescales, with a factor 10 increase in the TeV flux but only a moderate increase in the keV flux. The related broadband SED is better described by a two-zone leptonic scenario rather than by a one-zone scenario. A neutron decays into a proton, an electron, and an anti-neutrino through the beta-decay process. The decay lifetime ($\sim$880 s) is an important parameter in the weak interaction. For example, the neutron lifetime is a parameter used to determine the |$V_{\rm ud}$| parameter of the CKM quark mixing matrix. The lifetime is also one of the input parameters for the Big Bang Nucleosynthesis, which predicts light element synthesis in the early universe. However, experimental measurements of the neutron lifetime today are significantly different (8.4 s or 4.0$\sigma$) depending on the methods. One is a bottle method measuring surviving neutron in the neutron storage bottle. The other is a beam method measuring neutron beam flux and neutron decay rate in the detector. There is a discussion that the discrepancy comes from unconsidered systematic error or undetectable decay mode, such as dark decay. A new type of beam experiment is performed at the BL05 MLF J-PARC. This experiment measured neutron flux and decay rate simultaneously with a time projection chamber using a pulsed neutron beam. Context. QSO B1420+326 is a blazar classified as a Flat Spectrum Radio Quasar (FSRQ). In the beginning of 2020 it underwent an enhanced flux state. An extensive multiwavelength campaign allowed us to trace the evolution of the flare. Aims. We search for VHE gamma-ray emission from QSO B1420+326 during this flaring state. We aim to characterize and model the broadband emission of the source over different phases of the flare. Methods. The source was observed with a number of instruments in radio, near infrared, optical (including polarimetry and spectroscopy), ultra-violet, X-ray and gamma-ray bands. We use dedicated optical spectroscopy results to estimate the accretion disk and the dust torus luminosity. We perform spectral energy distribution modeling in the framework of combined Synchrotron-Self-Compton and External Compton scenario in which the electron energy distribution is partially determined from acceleration and cooling processes. Results. During the enhanced state the flux of both SED components drastically increased and the peaks were shifted to higher energies. Follow up observations with the MAGIC telescopes led to the detection of very-high-energy gamma-ray emission from this source, making it one of only a handful of FSRQs known in this energy range. Modeling allows us to constrain the evolution of the magnetic field and electron energy distribution in the emission region. The gamma-ray flare was accompanied by a rotation of the optical polarization vector during a low polarization state. Also, a new, superluminal radio knot contemporaneously appeared in the radio image of the jet. The flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) PKS 1510-089 is known for its complex multiwavelength behavior, and is one of only a few FSRQs detected at very high energy (VHE, $E>100\,$GeV) $\gamma$-rays. VHE $\gamma$-ray observations with H.E.S.S. and MAGIC during late May and early June 2016 resulted in the detection of an unprecedented flare, which reveals for the first time VHE $\gamma$-ray intranight variability in this source. While a common variability timescale of $1.5\,$hr is found, there is a significant deviation near the end of the flare with a timescale of $\sim 20\,$min marking the cessation of the event. The peak flux is nearly two orders of magnitude above the low-level emission. For the first time, curvature is detected in the VHE $\gamma$-ray spectrum of PKS 1510-089, which is fully explained through absorption by the extragalactic background light. Optical R-band observations with ATOM reveal a counterpart of the $\gamma$-ray flare, even though the detailed flux evolution differs from the VHE ightcurve. Interestingly, a steep flux decrease is observed at the same time as the cessation of the VHE flare. In the high energy (HE, $E>100\,$MeV) $\gamma$-ray band only a moderate flux increase is observed with Fermi-LAT, while the HE $\gamma$-ray spectrum significantly hardens up to a photon index of 1.6. A search for broad-line region (BLR) absorption features in the $\gamma$-ray spectrum indicates that the emission region is located outside of the BLR. Radio VLBI observations reveal a fast moving knot interacting with a standing jet feature around the time of the flare. As the standing feature is located $\sim 50\,$pc from the black hole, the emission region of the flare may have been located at a significant distance from the black hole. We investigate previously unclarified effects of fluid elasticity on shear-thickening in dilute suspensions in an Oldroyd-B viscoelastic fluid using a novel direct numerical simulation based on the smoothed profile method. Fluid elasticity is determined by the Weissenberg number Wi and by viscosity ratio $1-\beta=\eta_p/(\eta_s+\eta_p)$ which measures the coupling between the polymer stress and flow: $\eta_p$ and $\eta_s$ are the polymer and solvent viscosity, respectively.As $1-\beta$ increases, while the stresslet does not change significantly compared to that in the $\beta\to 1$ limit, the growth rate of the normalized polymer stress with Wi was suppressed.Analysis of flow and conformation dynamics around a particle for different $\beta$ reveals that at large $1-\beta$, polymer stress modulates flow, leading to suppression of polymer stretch.This effect of $\beta$ on polymer stress development indicates complex coupling between fluid elasticity and flow, and is essential to understand the rheology and hydrodynamic interactions in suspensions in viscoelastic media.

The coincident detection of GW170817 in gravitational waves and electromagnetic radiation spanning the radio to MeV gamma-ray bands provided the first direct evidence that short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) can originate from binary neutron star (BNS) mergers. On the other hand, the properties of short GRBs in high-energy gamma rays are still poorly constrained, with only $\sim$20 events detected in the GeV band, and none in the TeV band. GRB~160821B is one of the nearest short GRBs known at $z=0.162$. Recent analyses of the multiwavelength observational data of its afterglow emission revealed an optical-infrared kilonova component, characteristic of heavy-element nucleosynthesis in a BNS merger. Aiming to better clarify the nature of short GRBs, this burst was automatically followed up with the MAGIC telescopes, starting from 24 seconds after the burst trigger. Evidence of a gamma-ray signal is found above $\sim$0.5 TeV at a significance of $\sim3\,\sigma$ during observations that lasted until 4 hours after the burst. Assuming that the observed excess events correspond to gamma-ray emission from GRB 160821B, in conjunction with data at other wavelengths, we investigate its origin in the framework of GRB afterglow models. The simplest interpretation with one-zone models of synchrotron-self-Compton emission from the external forward shock has difficulty accounting for the putative TeV flux. Alternative scenarios are discussed where the TeV emission can be relatively enhanced. We report a characterization of the multi-band flux variability and correlations of the nearby (z=0.031) blazar Markarian 421 (Mrk 421) using data from Mets\"{a}hovi, Swift, Fermi-LAT, MAGIC, FACT and other collaborations and instruments from November 2014 till June 2016. Mrk 421 did not show any prominent flaring activity, but exhibited periods of historically low activity above 1 TeV (F$_{>1\mathrm{TeV}}<$ 1.7$\times$10$^{-12}$ ph cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$) and in the 2-10 keV (X-ray) band (F$_{2-10 \mathrm{keV}}<$3.6$\times$10$^{-11}$ erg cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$), during which the Swift-BAT data suggests an additional spectral component beyond the regular synchrotron emission. The highest flux variability occurs in X-rays and very-high-energy (E$>$0.1 TeV) $\gamma$-rays, which, despite the low activity, show a significant positive correlation with no time lag. The HR$_\mathrm{keV}$ and HR$_\mathrm{TeV}$ show the harder-when-brighter trend observed in many blazars, but the trend flattens at the highest fluxes, which suggests a change in the processes dominating the blazar variability. Enlarging our data set with data from years 2007 to 2014, we measured a positive correlation between the optical and the GeV emission over a range of about 60 days centered at time lag zero, and a positive correlation between the optical/GeV and the radio emission over a range of about 60 days centered at a time lag of $43^{+9}_{-6}$ days.This observation is consistent with the radio-bright zone being located about 0.2 parsec downstream from the optical/GeV emission regions of the jet. The flux distributions are better described with a LogNormal function in most of the energy bands probed, indicating that the variability in Mrk 421 is likely produced by a multiplicative process., Comment: 45 pages, 30 figures, 6 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper we prove higher regularity for 2m-th order parabolic equations with general boundary conditions. This is a kind of maximal L_p-L_q regularity with differentiability, i.e. the main theorem is isomorphism between the solution space and the data space using Besov and Triebel--Lizorkin spaces. The key is compatibility conditions for the initial data. We are able to get a unique smooth solution if the data satisfying compatibility conditions are smooth.

We report the detection of pulsed gamma-ray emission from the Geminga pulsar (PSR J0633+1746) between $15\,$GeV and $75\,$GeV. This is the first time a middle-aged pulsar has been detected up to these energies. Observations were carried out with the MAGIC telescopes between 2017 and 2019 using the low-energy threshold Sum-Trigger-II system. After quality selection cuts, $\sim 80\,$hours of observational data were used for this analysis. To compare with the emission at lower energies below the sensitivity range of MAGIC, $11$ years of Fermi-LAT data above $100\,$MeV were also analysed. From the two pulses per rotation seen by Fermi-LAT, only the second one, P2, is detected in the MAGIC energy range, with a significance of $6.3\,\sigma$. The spectrum measured by MAGIC is well-represented by a simple power law of spectral index $\Gamma= 5.62\pm0.54$, which smoothly extends the Fermi-LAT spectrum. A joint fit to MAGIC and Fermi-LAT data rules out the existence of a sub-exponential cut-off in the combined energy range at the $3.6\,\sigma$ significance level. Context. Diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) is the most promising mechanism to accelerate Galactic cosmic rays (CRs) in the shocks of supernova remnants (SNRs). The turbulence upstream is supposedly generated by the CRs, but this process is not well understood. The dominant mechanism may depend on the evolutionary state of the shock and can be studied via the CRs escaping upstream into the interstellar medium (ISM). Aims. Previous observations of the $\gamma$-Cygni SNR showed a difference in morphology between GeV and TeV energies. Since this SNR has the right age and is at the evolutionary stage for a significant fraction of CRs to escape, we aim to understand $\gamma$-ray emission in the vicinity of the $\gamma$-Cygni SNR. Methods. We observed the region of the $\gamma$-Cygni SNR with the MAGIC Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes between May 2015 and September 2017 recording 87 h of good-quality data. Additionally we analysed Fermi-LAT data to study the energy dependence of the morphology as well as the energy spectrum in the GeV to TeV range. The energy spectra and morphology were compared against theoretical predictions, which include a detailed derivation of the CR escape process and their $\gamma$-ray generation. Results. The MAGIC and Fermi-LAT data allowed us to identify three emission regions, which can be associated with the SNR and dominate at different energies. Our hadronic emission model accounts well for the morphology and energy spectrum of all source components. It constrains the time-dependence of the maximum energy of the CRs at the shock, the time-dependence of the level of turbulence, and the diffusion coefficient immediately outside the SNR shock. While in agreement with the standard picture of DSA, the time-dependence of the maximum energy was found to be steeper than predicted and the level of turbulence was found to change over the lifetime of the SNR., Comment: 20 pages, 10 figures. We construct the fine moduli space of log abelian varieties, which gives a compactification of the moduli space of abelian varieties.

We investigate the physical nature and origin of the gamma-ray emission from the extended source HESS J1841-055 observed at TeV and GeV energies. We observed HESS J1841-055 at TeV energies for a total effective time of 43 hours with the MAGIC telescopes, in 2012 and 2013. Additionally, we analysed the GeV counterpart making use of about 10 years of Fermi-LAT data. Using both Fermi-LAT and MAGIC, we study both the spectral and energy-dependent morphology of the source for almost four decades of energy. The origin of the gamma-ray emission from this region is investigated using multi-waveband information on sources present in this region, suggested to be associated with this unidentified gamma-ray source. We find that the extended emission at GeV-TeV energies is best described by more than one source model. We also perform the first energy-dependent analysis of the HESS J1841-055 region at GeV-TeV. We find that the emission at lower energies comes from a diffuse or extended component, while the major contribution of gamma rays above 1 TeV arises from the southern part of the source. Moreover, we find that a significant curvature is present in the combined observed spectrum of MAGIC and Fermi-LAT. The first multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution of this unidentified source shows that the emission at GeV-TeV energies can be well explained with both leptonic and hadronic models. For the leptonic scenario, bremsstrahlung is the dominant emission compared to inverse Compton. On the other hand, for the hadronic model, gamma-ray resulting from the decay of neutral pions ($\pi^0$) can explain the observed spectrum. The presence of dense molecular clouds overlapping with HESS J1841-055 makes both bremsstrahlung and $\pi^0$-decay processes the dominant emission mechanisms for the source., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, 5 tables. Extreme High-frequency BL~Lacs (EHBL) feature their synchrotron peak of the broadband spectral energy distribution (SED) at $\nu_{\rm s} \geq $10$^{17}$\,Hz. The BL~Lac object 1ES~2344+514 was included in the EHBL family because of its impressive shift of the synchrotron peak in 1996. During the following years, the source appeared to be in a low state without showing any extreme behaviours. In August 2016, 1ES~2344+514 was detected with the ground-based $\gamma$-ray telescope FACT during a high $\gamma$-ray state, triggering multi-wavelength (MWL) observations. We studied the MWL light curves of 1ES~2344+514 during the 2016 flaring state, using data from radio to VHE $\gamma$ rays taken with OVRO, KAIT, KVA, NOT, some telescopes of the GASP-WEBT collaboration at the Teide, Crimean, and St. Petersburg observatories, \textit{Swift}-UVOT, \textit{Swift}-XRT, \textit{Fermi}-LAT, FACT and MAGIC. With simultaneous observations of the flare, we built the broadband SED and studied it in the framework of a leptonic and an hadronic model. The VHE $\gamma$-ray observations show a flux level of 55\% of the Crab Nebula flux above 300\,GeV, similar to the historical maximum of 1995. The combination of MAGIC and \textit{Fermi}-LAT spectra provides an unprecedented characterization of the inverse-Compton peak for this object during a flaring episode. The $\Gamma$ index of the intrinsic spectrum in the VHE $\gamma$-ray band is $2.04\pm0.12_{\rm stat}\pm0.15_{\rm sys}$. We find the source in an extreme state with a shift of the position of the synchrotron peak to frequencies above or equal to $10^{18}$\,Hz, Comment: Accepted in MNRAS. Corresponding authors: M. Context. It has become evident that one-zone synchrotron self-Compton models are not always adequate for very-high-energy (VHE) gamma-ray emitting blazars. While two-component models are performing better, they are difficult to constrain due to the large number of free parameters. Aims. In this work, we make a first attempt to take into account the observational constraints from Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) data, long-term light curves (radio, optical, and X-rays) and optical polarisation to limit the parameter space for a two-component model and test if it can still reproduce the observed spectral energy distribution (SED) of the blazars. Methods. We selected five TeV BL Lac objects based on the availability of VHE gamma-ray and optical polarisation data. We collected constraints for the jet parameters from VLBI observations. We evaluated the contributions of the two components to the optical flux by means of decomposition of long-term radio and optical light curves as well as modeling of the optical polarisation variability of the objects. We selected eight epochs for these five objects, based on the variability observed at VHE gamma rays, for which we constructed the SEDs that we then modeled with a two-component model. Results. We found parameter sets which can reproduce the broadband SED of the sources in the framework of two-component models considering all available observational constraints from VLBI observations. Moreover, the constraints obtained from the long-term behavior of the sources in the lower energy bands could be used to determine the region where the emission in each band originates. Finally, we attempted to use optical polarisation data to shed new light on the behavior of the two components in the optical band. Our observationally constrained two zone model allows explanation of the entire SED from radio to VHE with two co-located emission regions.

Twisted bilayer graphene (TBG), in which two monolayer graphene are stacked with an in-plane rotation angle, has recently become a hot topic due to unique electronic structures. TBG is normally produced in air by the tear-and-stack method of mechanical exfoliation and transferring graphene flakes, by which a sizable, millimeter-order area, and importantly clean interface between layers are hard to obtain. In this study, we resolved these problems by directly transferring the easy-to-exfoliate CVD-grown graphene on SiC substrate to graphene in a high vacuum without using any transfer assisting medium and observed electronic band modulations due to the strong interlayer coupling.

In this paper we consider maximal regularity for the vector-valued quasi-steady linear elliptic problems. The equations are the elliptic equation in the domain and the evolution equations on its boundary. We prove the maximal $L_p$-$L_q$ regularity for these problems and give examples that our results are applicable. On January 14, 2019, the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov telescopes detected GRB 190114C above 0.2 TeV, recording the most energetic photons ever observed from a gamma-ray burst. We use this unique observation to probe an energy dependence of the speed of light in vacuo for photons as predicted by several quantum gravity models. We report on a multi-band variability and correlation study of the TeV blazar Mrk 421 during an exceptional flaring activity observed from 2013 April 11 to 2013 April 19. The study uses, among others, data from GASP-WEBT, Swift, NuSTAR, Fermi-LAT, VERITAS, and MAGIC. The large blazar activity, and the 43 hours of simultaneous NuSTAR and MAGIC/VERITAS observations, permitted variability studies on 15 minute time bins, and over three X-ray bands (3-7 keV, 7-30 keV and 30-80 keV) and three very-high-energy (>0.1 TeV, hereafter VHE) gamma-ray bands (0.2-0.4 TeV, 0.4-0.8 TeV and >0.8 TeV). We detected substantial flux variations on multi-hour and sub-hour timescales in all the X-ray and VHE gamma-ray bands. The characteristics of the sub-hour flux variations are essentially energy-independent, while the multi-hour flux variations can have a strong dependence on the energy of the X-ray and the VHE gamma rays. The three VHE bands and the three X-ray bands are positively correlated with no time-lag, but the strength and the characteristics of the correlation changes substantially over time and across energy bands. Our findings favour multi-zone scenarios for explaining the achromatic/chromatic variability of the fast/slow components of the light curves, as well as the changes in the flux-flux correlation on day-long timescales. We interpret these results within a magnetic reconnection scenario, where the multi-hour flux variations are dominated by the combined emission from various plasmoids of different sizes and velocities, while the sub-hour flux variations are dominated by the emission from a single small plasmoid moving across the magnetic reconnection layer., Comment: 46 pages, 17 figures, 9 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ Supplements

After characterizing the integrable discrete analogue of the Euler's elastica, we focus our attention on the problem of approximating a given discrete planar curve by an appropriate discrete Euler's elastica. We carry out the fairing process via a $L^2\!$-distance minimization to avoid the numerical instabilities. The optimization problem is solved via a gradient-driven optimization method (IPOPT). This problem is non-convex and the result strongly depends on the initial guess, so that we use a discrete analogue of the algorithm provided by Brander et al., which gives an initial guess to the optimization method.

The discrete power function on the hexagonal lattice proposed by Bobenko et al is considered, whose defining equations consist of three cross-ratio equations and a similarity constraint. We introduce the metric using BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) (Devlin et al., 2019) for automatic machine translation evaluation. The experimental results of the WMT-2017 Metrics Shared Task dataset show that our metric achieves state-of-the-art performance in segment-level metrics task for all to-English language pairs., Comment: 6 pages

Dukes (2014) and Konno, Shimizu, and Takei (2017) studied the periodicity for 2-state quantum walks whose coin operator is the Hadamard matrix on cycle graph C_N with N vertices. The present paper treats the periodicity for 3-state quantum walks on C_N. Our results follow from a new method based on cyclotomic field. This method shows a necessary condition for the coin operator of quantum walks to have the finite period. Moreover, we reveal the period T_N of two kinds of typical quantum walks, the Grover and Fourier walks. We prove that both walks do not have any finite period except for N=3, in which case T_3=6 (Grover), =12 (Fourier)., Comment: 6 pages

We work on the task of automatically designing a treatment plan from the findings included in the medical certificate written by the dentist. To develop an artificial intelligence system that deals with free-form certificates written by dentists, we annotate the findings and utilized the natural language processing approach. As a result of the experiment using 990 certificates, 0.585 F1-score was achieved for the task of extracting orthodontic problems from findings, and 0.584 correlation coefficient with the human ranking was achieved for the treatment prioritization task.

This is Part VI of our series of papers on log abelian varieties. In this part, we study local moduli and GAGF of log abelian varieties.

A linkage mechanism consists of rigid bodies assembled by joints which can be used to translate and transfer motion from one form in one place to another. In this paper, we are particularly interested in a family of spacial linkage mechanisms which consist of $n$-copies of a rigid body joined together by hinges to form a ring. Each hinge joint has its own axis of revolution and rigid bodies joined to it can be freely rotated around the axis. The family includes the famous threefold symmetric Bricard6R linkage also known as the Kaleidocycle, which exhibits a characteristic "turning over" motion. We can model such a linkage as a discrete closed curve in $\mathbb{R}^3$ with a constant torsion up to sign. Then, its motion is described as the deformation of the curve preserving torsion and arc length. We describe certain motions of this object that are governed by the semi-discrete mKdV equations, where infinitesimally the motion of each vertex is confined in the osculating plane.
