Ambient magnetic skyrmions stabilized in multilayer nanostructures are of immense interest due to their relevance to magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ) devices for memory and unconventional computing applications. However, existing skyrmionic nanostructures built using conventional metallic or oxide multilayer nanodots are unable to concurrently fulfill the requirements of nanoscale skyrmion stability and feasibility of all-electrical readout and manipulation. Here, we develop a few-repeat hybrid multilayer platform consisting of metallic [Pt/CoB/Ir]3 and oxide [Pt/CoB/MgO] components that are coupled to evolve together as a single, composite stack. Zero-field (ZF) skyrmions with sizes as small as 50 nm are stabilized in the hybrid multilayer nanodots, which are smoothly modulated by up to 2.5x by varying CoB thickness and dot sizes. Meanwhile, skyrmion multiplets are also stabilized by small bias fields. Crucially, we observe higher order 'target' skyrmions with varying magnetization rotations in moderately-sized, low anisotropy nanodots. These results provide a viable route to realize long-sought skyrmionic MTJ devices and new possibilities for multi-state skyrmionic device concepts.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have aroused considerable research interests owing to their potential applications in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics. Thermodynamic stability of 2D structures inevitably affects the performance and power consumption of the fabricated nanodevices. Black arsenic (b-As), as a cousin of black phosphorus, has presented the extremely high anisotropy in physical properties. However, the systematic research on structural stability of b-As is still lack. Herein, we demonstrated the detailed analysis on structural metastability of the natural b-As, and determined its existence conditions in terms of two essential thermodynamic variables as hydrostatic pressure and temperature. Our results confirmed that b-As can only survive below 0.7 GPa, and then irreversibly transform to gray arsenic, in consistent with our theoretical calculations. Furthermore, thermal annealing strategy was developed to precisely control the thickness of b-As flake, and it sublimates at 300 oC. Longitudinal tracking of skin lesions - finding correspondence, changes in morphology, and texture - is beneficial to the early detection of melanoma. However, it has not been well investigated in the context of full-body imaging. We propose a novel framework combining geometric and texture information to localize skin lesion correspondence from a source scan to a target scan in total body photography (TBP). Body landmarks or sparse correspondence are first created on the source and target 3D textured meshes. Every vertex on each of the meshes is then mapped to a feature vector characterizing the geodesic distances to the landmarks on that mesh. Then, for each lesion of interest (LOI) on the source, its corresponding location on the target is first coarsely estimated using the geometric information encoded in the feature vectors and then refined using the texture information. We evaluated the framework quantitatively on both a public and a private dataset, for which our success rates (at 10 mm criterion) are comparable to the only reported longitudinal study. As full-body 3D capture becomes more prevalent and has higher quality, we expect the proposed method to constitute a valuable step in the longitudinal tracking of skin lesions., Comment: MICCAI-2023

Lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) is caused by the compression of the nerve root or cauda equina nerve by stenosis of the lumbar spinal canal or intervertebral foramen, and is manifested as chronic low back and leg pain. Danlu Tongdu (DLTD) tablets can relieve chronic pain caused by LSS, but the molecular mechanism remains largely unknown. In this study, the potential molecular mechanism of DLTD tablets in the treatment of LSS was firstly predicted by network pharmacology method. Results showed that DLTD functions in regulating anti-oxidative, apoptosis, and inflammation signaling pathways. Furthermore, the flow cytometry results showed that DLTD tablets efficiently reduced ROS content and inhibited rat neural stem cell apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide. DLTD also inhibited the mitochondrial membrane potential damage induced by hydrogen peroxide. Elisa analysis showed that DLTD induced cell cycle related protein, CDK2 and CDK4 and reduced CDKN1A protein expression level. Taken together, our study provided new insights of DLTD in treating LSS through reducing ROS content, decreasing apoptosis by inhibiting CDKN1A and promoting CDK2 and CDK4 expression levels.

Quantum Hall effect (QHE), the ground to construct modern conceptual electronic systems with emerging physics, is often much influenced by the interplay between the host two-dimensional electron gases and the substrate, sometimes predicted to exhibit exotic topological states. Yet the understanding of the underlying physics and the controllable engineering of this paradigm of interaction remain challenging. Here we demonstrate the observation of an unusual QHE, which differs markedly from the known picture, in graphene samples in contact with an anti-ferromagnetic insulator CrOCl equipped with dual gates. Owing to the peculiar interfacial coupling, Landau levels in monolayer graphene remain intact at negative filling fractions, but largely deviated for the positive gate-doping range. The latter QHE phase even presents in the limit of zero magnetic field, with the consequential Landau quantization following a parabolic relation between the displacement field $D$ and the magnetic field $B$. This characteristic prevails up to 100 K in a sufficiently wide effective doping range from 0 to 10$^{13}$ cm$^{-2}$. Spin Hall effect, an electric generation of spin current, allows for efficient control of magnetization. Recent theory revealed that orbital Hall effect creates orbital current, which can be much larger than spin Hall-induced spin current. However, orbital current cannot directly exert a torque on a ferromagnet, requiring a conversion process from orbital current to spin current. Here, we report two effective methods of the conversion through spin-orbit coupling engineering, which allows us to unambiguously demonstrate orbital-current-induced spin torque, or orbital Hall torque. We find that orbital Hall torque is greatly enhanced by introducing either a rare-earth ferromagnet Gd or a Pt interfacial layer with strong spin-orbit coupling in Cr/ferromagnet structures, indicating that the orbital current generated in Cr is efficiently converted into spin current in the Gd or Pt layer. Furthermore, we show that the orbital Hall torque can facilitate the reduction of switching current of perpendicular magnetization in spin-orbit-torque-based spintronic devices., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

Properties of semiconductors are largely defined by crystal imperfections including native defects. Van der Waals (vdW) semiconductors, a newly emerged class of materials, are no exception: defects exist even in the purest materials and strongly affect their electrical, optical, magnetic, catalytic and sensing properties. However, unlike conventional semiconductors where energy levels of defects are well documented, they are experimentally unknown in even the best studied vdW semiconductors, impeding the understanding and utilization of these materials. Here, we directly evaluate deep levels and their chemical trends in the bandgap of MoS2, WS2 and their alloys by transient spectroscopic study. One of the deep levels is found to follow the conduction band minimum of each host, attributed to the native sulfur vacancy. A switchable, DX center - like deep level has also been identified, whose energy lines up instead on a fixed level across different hosts, explaining a persistent photoconductivity above 400K.

Two-dimensional (2D) Dirac cone materials exhibit linear energy dispersion at the Fermi level, where the effective masses of carriers are very close to zero and the Fermi velocity is ultrahigh, only 2 ~ 3 orders of magnitude lower than the light velocity. Such the Dirac cone materials have great promise in high-performance electronic devices. Herein, we have employed the genetic algorithms methods combining with first-principles calculations to propose a new 2D anisotropic Dirac cone material, that is, orthorhombic boron phosphide (BP) monolayer named as borophosphene. Molecular dynamics simulation and phonon dispersion have been used to evaluate the dynamic and thermal stability of borophosphene. Because of the unique arrangements of B-B and P-P dimers, the mechanical and electronic properties are highly anisotropic. Of great interest is that the Dirac cone of the borophosphene is robust, independent of in-plane biaxial and uniaxial strains, and can also be observed in its one-dimensional (1D) zigzag nanoribbons and armchair nanotubes. The Fermi velocities are ~ 105 m/s, the same order of magnitude with that of graphene. By using a tight-binding model, the origin of the Dirac cone of borophosphene is analyzed. Moreover, a unique feature of self-doping can be induced by the in-plane biaxial and uniaxial strains of borophosphene and the Curvature effect of nanotubes, which is great beneficial to realizing high speed carriers (holes). Our results suggest that the borophosphene holds a great promise in high-performance electronic devices, which could promote the experimental and theoretical studies to further explore the potential applications of other 2D Dirac cone sheets.

We introduce entity post-modifier generation as an instance of a collaborative writing task. Given a sentence about a target entity, the task is to automatically generate a post-modifier phrase that provides contextually relevant information about the entity. For example, for the sentence, "Barack Obama, _______, supported the #MeToo movement.", the phrase "a father of two girls" is a contextually relevant post-modifier. To this end, we build PoMo, a post-modifier dataset created automatically from news articles reflecting a journalistic need for incorporating entity information that is relevant to a particular news event. PoMo consists of more than 231K sentences with post-modifiers and associated facts extracted from Wikidata for around 57K unique entities. We use crowdsourcing to show that modeling contextual relevance is necessary for accurate post-modifier generation. We adapt a number of existing generation approaches as baselines for this dataset. Our results show there is large room for improvement in terms of both identifying relevant facts to include (knowing which claims are relevant gives a >20% improvement in BLEU score), and generating appropriate post-modifier text for the context (providing relevant claims is not sufficient for accurate generation). Employing density functional theory based calculations, we investigate structural, vibrational and strain-dependent electronic properties of an ultra-thin CdTe crystal structure that can be de- rived from its bulk counterpart. It is found that this ultra-thin crystal has an 8-atom primitive unit cell with considerable surface reconstructions. Dynamic stability of the structure is predicted based on its calculated vibrational spectrum. Electronic band structure calculations reveal that both electrons and holes in single layer CdTe possess anisotropic in-plane masses and mobilities. Moreover, we show that the ultra-thin CdTe has some interesting electromechanical features, such as strain-dependent anisotropic variation of the band gap value, and its rapid increase under per- pendicular compression. The direct band gap semiconducting nature of the ultra-thin CdTe crystal remains unchanged under all types of applied strain. With a robust and moderate direct band gap, single-layer CdTe is a promising material for nanoscale strain dependent device applications.

In this paper, we emphasize the need for data cleansing when clustering large-scale transaction databases and propose a new data cleansing method that improves clustering quality and performance. We evaluate our data cleansing method through a series of experiments. As a result, the clustering quality and performance were significantly improved by up to 165% and 330%, respectively., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

Over the past two decades, endowments have become an increasingly important component of the typical university's resource base. We examine how U.S. doctoral institutions' endowment payout policies and spending decisions are affected by financial market shocks to endowments. While most endowments have formal payout policies intended to smooth payouts over time, we find that universities are more likely to deviate from these policies following negative (but not positive) shocks. These negative shocks have important economic effects on university activities. Specifically, we find that universities with larger negative endowment shocks are relatively more likely to: (1) reduce support staff (e.g., secretaries) and maintenance, but not administrators; (2) among less selective institutions, reduce expenditures on tenure-system faculty while increasing the average salary of adjuncts/lecturers; (3) make larger cuts to tenure-system faculty and secretarial support when their endowment portfolio is less liquid (i.e. higher allocations to alternative assets such as hedge funds); and (4) among more selective universities, reduce financial aid for students the following Fall and enroll fewer freshmen. We also find that universities increase hiring when there are negative endowment shocks to their peers. Thus, financial shocks have real effects on university operations, but with cross-sectional variation in how universities respond.
