Almahata Sitta (AhS) 202 from the UoK collection represents a clast from the polymict breccia asteroid 2008 TC3. AhS 202 was recognized as a unique carbonaceous chondrite (CC) with a high magnetite content. Here we report that it also contains a significant amount of amphibole, a mineral that is very rare in chondrites and has not previously been reported in significant abundance in a CC. We present new petrographic, oxygen isotope, and micro-FTIR data. We discuss petrogenesis and possible relationships to known CC.

Polymict ureilites contain a variety of Less than or equal to mm to cm sized non-ureilitic clasts, many of which can be identifed as chondritic and achondritic meteorite types. Among them, dark clasts have been observed in polymict ureilites that are similar to CI chondrites in mineralogy, containing phyllosilicates, magnetite, sulfide and carbonates. Bulk oxygen isotope analyses of a dark clast in Nilpena plot along the CCAM line and above the terrestrial fractionation line, on the O-poor extension of the main group ureilite trend and clearly different from bulk CI chondrites. One possible origins of such dark clast is that they represent aqueously altered precursors of ureilite parent body (UPB) that were preserved on the cold surface of the UPB. Oxygen isotope analyses of dark clasts are key to better understanding their origins. Oxygen isotope ratios of magnetite are of special interest because they reflect the compositions of the fluids in asteroidal bodies. In primitive chondrites, Delta O (= Delta O - 0.52× Delta O) values of magnetites are always higher than those of the bulk meteorites and represent minimum Delta O values of the initial O-poor aqueous fluids in the parent body. Previous SIMS analyses on magnetite and fayalite in dark clasts from the DaG 319 polymict ureilite were analytically difficult due to small grain sizes, though data indicated positive Delta O values of 3-4 per mille, higher than that of the dark clast in Nilpena (1.49per mille).

Almahata Sitta (AhS) is the first meteorite to originate from an asteroid (2008 TC3) that had been studied in space before it hit Earth [1,2]. It is also unique because the fallen fragments comprise a variety of types: approximately 69% ureilites (achondrites) and 31% chondrites [3]. Two models have been proposed for the origin 2008 TC3: 1) an accretionary model [3,4]; or 2) a regolith model [5,6]. Typical polymict ureilites are interpreted to represent regolith, and contain a few % foreign clasts [7,8]. The most common are dark (CC matrix-like) clasts similar to those in many meteoritic breccias [9]. A variety of other chondrites, as well as achondrites (angrites), have also been reported [7,9,10]. We have been working to determine the full diversity of these clasts [10-13] for comparison with AhS. We discuss implications for mixing of materials in the early solar system and the origin of 2008 TC3.

One of the important discoveries from the Stardust mission is the observation of crystalline silicate particles that resemble Ca, Al-rich inclusions (CAIs) and chondrules in carbonaceous chondrites], which suggests radial transport of high temperature solids from the inner to the outer solar nebula regions and capture by accreting cometary objects. The Al-Mg isotope analyses of CAI-like and type II chondrule-like particles revealed no excess of Mg-26 derived from in-situ decay of Al-26 (Tau)(sub 1/2) = 0.705Myr; ), suggesting late formation of these particles. However, the number of Wild 2 particles analyzed for Al-Mg isotopes is still limited (n = 3). In order to better understand the timing of the formation of Wild 2 particles and possible radial transport in the protoplanetary disk, we performed SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer) Al-Mg isotope analyses of plagioclase in a FeO-poor ferromagnesian Wild 2 particle, which is the most abundant type among crystalline Wild 2 particles.

One of the most important discoveries from comet Wild-2 samples was observation of crystalline silicate particles that resemble chondrules and CAIs in carbonaceous chondrites. Previous oxygen isotope analyses of crystalline silicate terminal particles showed heterogeneous oxygen isotope ratios with delta(sup 18)O to approx. delta(sup 17)O down to -50% in the CAI-like particle Inti, a relict olivine grain in Gozen-sama, and an olivine particle. However, many Wild-2 particles as well as ferromagnesian silicates in anhydrous interplanetary dust particles (IDPs) showed Delta(sup 17)O values that cluster around -2%. In carbonaceous chondrites, chondrules seem to show two major isotope reservoirs with Delta(sup 17)O values at -5% and -2%. It was suggested that the Delta(sup 17)O = -2% is the common oxygen isotope reservoir for carbonaceous chondrite chondrules and cometary dust, from the outer asteroid belt to the Kuiper belt region. However, a larger dataset with high precision isotope analyses (+/-1-2%) is still needed to resolve the similarities or distinctions among Wild-2 particles, IDPs and chondrules in meteorites. We have made signifi-cant efforts to establish routine analyses of small particles (< or =10micronsm) at 1-2% precision using IMS-1280 at WiscSIMS laboratory. Here we report new results of high precision oxygen isotope analyses of Wild-2 particles and anhydrous chondritic IDPs, and discuss the relationship between the cometary dust and carbonaceous chondrite chondrules.

The Almahata Sitta (hereafter "AHS") meteorite was derived from an impact of asteroid 2008TC3 on Earth and is classified as an anomalous polymict ureilite. More than 600 meteorite fragments have been recovered from the strewnfield. Previous reports indicate that these fragments consist mainly of ureilitic materials with textures and compositions, while some fragments are found to be chondrites of a wide range of chemical classes. Bulk oxygen three isotope analyses of ureilitic fragments from AHS fall close to the CCAM (Carbonaceous Chondrite Anhydrous Mineral) line similar to ureilites. In order to further compare AHS with known ureilites, we performed high precision SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer) oxygen isotope analyses of some AHS samples

Oxygen isotope compositions of bulk chondrules and their mineral separates in type 3 ordinary chondrites (UOC) show several % variability in the oxygen three isotope diagram with slope of approx.0.7 [1]. In contrast, ion microprobe analyses of olivine and pyroxene phenocrysts in ferromagnesian chondrules from LL 3.0-3.1 chondrites show mass dependent isotopic fractionation as large as 5% among type I (FeO-poor) chondrules, while type II (FeO-rich) chondrules show a narrow range (less than or equal to 1%) of compositions [2]. The .Delta(exp 17)O (=delta(exp 17)O-0.52xdelta(exp 18)O) values of olivine and pyroxene in these chondrules show a peak at approx.0.7% that are systematically lower than those of bulk chondrule analyses as well as the bulk LL chondrites [2]. Further analyses of glass in Semarkona chondrules show .17O values as high as +5% with highly fractionated d18O (max +18%), implying O-16-poor glass in chondrules were altered as a result of hydration in the parent body at low temperature [3]. Thus, chondrules in LL3.0-3.1 chondrites do not provide any direct evidence of oxygen isotope exchange between solid precursor and O-16-depleted gas during chondrule melting events. To compare the difference and/or similarity between chondrules from LL and H chondrites, we initiated systematic investigations of oxygen isotopes in chondrules from Yamato 793408 (H3.2), one of the least equilibrated H chondrite [4]. In our preliminary study of 4 chondrules, we reported distinct oxygen isotope ratios from dusty olivine and refractory forsterite (RF) grains compared to their host chondrules and confirmed their relict origins [5].

Preliminary examinations of small dust particles from comet 82P/Wild 2 revealed many expected and unexpected features. Among them the most striking feature is the presence of abundant crystalline material in the comet. Synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction and microtomography are the most efficient methods to detect and describe bulk mineralogical features of crystalline cometary particles. In the present study, in addition to these two non-destructive techniques, electron microscopy and ion-probe mass spectrometry were carried out on the four crystalline particles.

Chronometer using the short-lived extinct-nuclide (26)Al has been applied to chondrules in order to obtain of their formation ages. Previous studies were mostly performed on Al-rich chondrules, which constitute only 1% of all chondrules, because of their high Al/Mg ratios. Recently, (26)Al ages of major ferromagnesian chondrules in least equilibrated ordinary chondrites (OC) have been obtained. However, (26)Al ages of ferromagnesian chondrules in least equilibrated carbonaceous chondrites (CC) are very limited. Particularly, age data of FeO-poor (Type I) chondrules in CC have been scarcely obtained, because of their fine textures and lack of phases with high Al/Mg (>100) ratios. In order to clarify the origin and formation processes of chondrules, we started systematic investigations on Type I chondrules in the most pristine CC (CO3.0 Yamato-81020), by examining textures, bulk chemical compositions, (26)Al ages and oxygen isotopic compositions. We find Type I chondrules in CC formed contemporaneously with ferromagnesian chondrules in OC.

In order to understand the timing of events in the early solar system, we rely on the radio-nuclide-based chronometers applied to materials in primitive meteorites. Because the time scale of early-solar system evolution was on the order of a few million years (Myr), we focus on so-called "short-lived radionuclides" with mean lives of less than 10 Myr (Table 1), as well as on the long-lived U-Pb system where high precision 207Pb-206Pb ages are applied. Note that the validity of some systems as chronometers (e.g., Be-B, Fe-Ni) has yet to be established. We summarize literature data for chondrules and CAIs and discuss how these chronometers constrain formation time scales in the early solar system.
