Search

Photoproduction of charged pions pairs off protons is studied within the invariant masses of the final state hadrons from 1.6 to 2.4 GeV at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility with the CLAS detector. The data are included in the Bonn-Gatchina coupled-channel analysis and provide the information necessary to determine the branching fractions for most known nucleon and Delta resonances. Branching ratios are obtained here from an event based likelihood fit., Comment: 19 pages, 19 Figures

LHCb data on $B^0\to\jpsi \pi^+\pi^-$, $B_{s} ^0\to\jpsi \pi^+\pi^-$ and $B_{s} ^0\to\jpsi K^+K^-$ are fitted in a coupled-channel analysis jointly with data on radiative $\jpsi$ decays, $\pi\pi$ elastic scattering and further data sets. Branching ratios for $B_{(s)} ^0\to\jpsi f_0,f_2$ are determined and compared to branching ratios from radiative $J/\psi$ decays. Above 1500\,MeV, only little intensity is observed in $B_{(s)} ^0\to\jpsi f_0,f_2$ decays while in radiative $\jpsi$ decays the intensities peak at 1865\,MeV in the scalar, and at 2210\,MeV in the tensor wave. This pattern is interpreted as further support for the glueball interpretation of $G_0(1865)$ and $G_2(2210)$., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables, revised

Branching ratios for the decay of hadrons with large width or near thresholds depend on their definition. We test different definitions and show that rather different branching ratios can be obtained. For wide resonances and for sequential decays with wide intermediate resonances, integration over the spectral functions is mandatory. The tests are performed exploiting the latest solution of the Bonn-Gatchina multi-channel analysis and published values for residues of light scalar mesons. For a resonance overlapping with a threshold, in case its pole lies in a non-adjacent sheet, we show how the total width, needed for the branching ratios, does not correspond to the imaginary part of the pole position. We use the Madrid-Krakow dispersive parameterizations to illustrate this situation with the $f_0(980)$., Comment: Report, 9 pages (extended to light scalar mesons)

Measurements of target asymmetries and double-polarization observables for the reaction $\gamma p\to p\pi^0\pi^0$ are reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility (Bonn University) using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol (C$_4$H$_9$OH) target, which provided transversely polarized protons. Linearly polarized photons were produced via bremsstrahlung off a diamond crystal. The data cover the photon energy range from $E_{\gamma}$=650 MeV to $E_{\gamma}$=2600 MeV and nearly the complete angular range. The results have been included in the BnGa partial wave analysis. Experimental results and the fit agree very well. Observed systematic differences in the branching ratios for decays of $N^*$ and $\Delta^*$ resonances are attributed to the internal structure of these excited nucleon states. Resonances which can be assigned to SU(6)$\times$O(3) two-oscillator configurations show larger branching ratios to intermediate states with non-zero intrinsic orbital angular momenta than resonances assigned to one-oscillator configurations., Comment: 21 pages, 27 figures

The tensor glueball is searched for in BESIII data on radiative $J/\psi$ decays into $\pi^0\pi^0$ and $K_sK_s$. The $\pi\pi$ invariant mass distribution exhibits an enhancement that can be described by a pole at $(2210\pm 60) -i(180\pm 60)$\,MeV. We speculate if the tensor glueball could be distributed among high-mass tensor mesons., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 2 Tables

The spectrum of $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$ excitations is reviewed taking into account (nearly) all hyperon resonances which were seen in early analyses or in one of the recent partial-wave analyses. The spectrum is compared with the old Isgur-Karl model and the Bonn model. These models allows us to discuss the SU(3) structure of the observed resonances. The SU(3) decomposition is compared with SU(6) relations between the different decay modes. Seven $\Lambda$ states are proposed to be classified as SU(3) singlet states. The hyperon spectrum is compared with the spectrum of $N$ and $\Delta$ resonances., Comment: 14 pages, 2 figures

The polarization observables $T, E, P, H$, and $G$ in photoproduction of $\eta$ mesons off protons are measured for photon energies from threshold to $W=2400\,$MeV ($T$), 2280 MeV ($E$), 1620 MeV ($P, H$), or 1820 MeV ($G$), covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, J\"uBo, and BnGa partial-wave analyses. A refit within the BnGa approach including further data yields precise branching ratios for the $N\eta$ decay of nucleon resonances. A $N\eta$-branching ratio of $0.33\pm 0.04$ for $N(1650)1/2^-$ is found, which reduces the large and controversially discussed $N\eta$-branching ratio difference of the two lowest mass $J^P=1/2^-$-resonances significantly., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures

We report properties of $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$ hyperon resonances formed in $K^-$ induced reactions. Special emphasis is laid on the analysis of the three-body final states $2\pi^0\Lambda$ and $2\pi^0\Sigma$ and of the quasi-two-body final states $\pi\Lambda(1520)$, $\bar K\Delta(1232)$, $\pi\Sigma(1385)$, $\bar K^*N$, and $\omega\Lambda$. We give pole positions of $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$ hyperon resonances and transition residues from the $K^-p$ initial to various final states as well as Breit-Wigner masses and widths and decay branching ratios. Twenty resonances and "bumps" reported in the Review of Particle Physics are not required in our fits, evidence for five new resonances is reported. The observed mass spectrum is compared to the spectrum calculated in the Bonn quark model. Three spin doublets, six $\Lambda$ hyperons, are tentatively assigned to the SU(3) singlet system., Comment: 18 pages, 10 Figures, 3 Tables

Early data on $K^-$ induced reactions off protons are collected and used in a coupled-channel partial wave analysis (PWA). Data which had been published in the form of Legendre coefficients are included in the PWA. In a {\it primary} fit using 3* and 4* resonances only, we observe some significant discrepancies with the data. In a systematic search for new $\Lambda$ and $\Sigma$ hyperon resonances, additional candidates are found. The significance of the known and of the additional resonances is evaluated. Seventeen resonances listed with 1* or 2* and one resonance listed with 3* in the Review of Particle Properties cannot be confirmed, five new hyperons are suggested. Low-energy data on the three charge states in $\gamma p \to K^+(\Sigma\pi)$ from CLAS at JLab, on $K^-p\to \pi^0\pi^0\Lambda$ and $\pi^0\pi^0\Sigma$ from the Crystal Ball at BNL, bubble chamber data on $K^-p\to\pi^-\pi^+\pi^{\pm}\Sigma^{\mp}$, low-energy total cross sections on $K^-$ induced reactions, and data on the $K^-p$ atom are fitted with the BnGa partial-wave-analysis program. We find that the data can be fitted well with just one isoscalar spin-1/2 negative-parity pole, the $\Lambda(1405)$, and background contributions., Comment: 9 pages, 10 figures

A measurement of the double-polarization observable $E$ for the reaction $\gamma p\to \pi^0 p$ is reported. The data were taken with the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA facility in Bonn using the Bonn frozen-spin butanol (C$_4$H$_9$OH) target, which provided longitudinally-polarized protons. Circularly-polarized photons were produced via bremsstrahlung of longitudinally-polarized electrons. First measurements of double-polarization observables in $\omega$ photoproduction off the proton are presented using transverse target polarization and data from the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) FROST experiment at Jefferson Lab. The beam-target asymmetry $F$ has been measured using circularly polarized, tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2700 MeV, and the beam-target asymmetries $H$ and $P$ have been measured using linearly polarized tagged photons in the energy range 1200 - 2000 MeV. These measurements significantly increase the database on polarization observables. The results are included in two partial-wave analyses and reveal significant contributions from several nucleon ($N^\ast$) resonances. In particular, contributions from new $N^\ast$ resonances listed in the Review of Particle Properties are observed, which aid in reaching the goal of mapping out the nucleon resonance spectrum., Comment: Two authors added, figures updated

We report the first measurements of the $E$ beam-target helicity asymmetry for the $\vec{\gamma} \vec{n} \to K^{0}\Lambda$, and $K^{0}\Sigma^{0}$ channels in the energy range 1.70$\leq W\leq$2.34 GeV. The CLAS system at Jefferson Lab uses a circularly polarized photon beam and a target consisting of longitudinally polarized solid molecular hydrogen deuteride with low background contamination for the measurements. The multivariate analysis method boosted decision trees was used to isolate the reactions of interest. Comparisons with predictions from the KaonMAID, SAID, and Bonn-Gatchina models are presented. These results will help separate the isospin $I=0$ and $I=1$ photo-coupling transition amplitudes in pseudoscalar meson photoproduction., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures; Revised to match published version

Recent data on photoproduction of $\eta'$ mesons off protons have been included in the data base for the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis. The real and imaginary parts of the $S$-wave $\eta^\prime p\to \eta^\prime p$ scattering amplitude in the threshold region were fit to yield the $\eta^\prime p$ scattering length and the interaction range. This new analysis found $|a_{\eta^\prime p}|= (0.403\pm 0.015\pm 0.060)$ fm and a phase $\phi=(87\pm2)^\circ$, while the range parameter is not well-constrained. The striking behavior of the GRAAL data on the beam asymmetry in the threshold region suggests that a narrow proton-$\eta'$ resonance might exist. However, the scattering length was found to be relatively insensitive to the possible existence of this narrow resonance., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Data on the reaction $\gamma p\to K^+\Lambda$ from the CLAS experiments are used to derive the leading multipoles, $E_{0+}$, $M_{1-}$, $E_{1+}$, and $M_{1+}$, from the production threshold to 2180\,MeV in 24 slices of the invariant mass. The four multipoles are determined without any constraints. The multipoles are fitted using a multichannel $L+P$ model which allows us to search for singularities and to extract the positions of poles on the complex energy plane in an almost model-independent method. The multipoles are also used as additional constraints in an energy-dependent analysis of a large body of pion and photo-induced reactions within the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa) partial wave analysis. The study confirms the existence of poles due to nucleon resonances with spin-parity $J^P = 1/2^-; 1/2^+$, and $3/2^+$ in the region at about 1.9\,GeV., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures

The two reactions $\gamma p\to K^+\Lambda$ and $\pi^-p\to K^0\Lambda$ are analyzed to determine the leading photoproduction multipoles and the pion-induced partial wave amplitudes in slices of the invariant mass. The multipoles and the partial-wave amplitudes are simultaneously fitted in a multichannel Laurent+Pietarinen model (L+P model), which determines the poles in the complex energy plane on the second Riemann sheet close to the physical axes. The results from the L+P fit are compared with the results of an energy-dependent fit based on the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa) approach. The study confirms the existence of several poles due to nucleon resonances in the region at about 1.9\,GeV with quantum numbers $J^P = 1/2^+$, $3/2^+, 1/2^-, 3/2^-, 5/2^-$., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures

The photoproduction of $\omega$ mesons off the proton has been studied in the reaction $\gamma p\to p\,\omega$ using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) and the frozen-spin target (FROST) in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. For the first time, the target asymmetry, $T$, has been measured in photoproduction from the decay $\omega\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$, using a transversely-polarized target with energies ranging from just above the reaction threshold up to 2.8 GeV. Significant non-zero values are observed for these asymmetries, reaching about 30-40% in the third-resonance region. New measurements for the photon-beam asymmetry, $\Sigma$, are also presented, which agree well with previous CLAS results and extend the world database up to 2.1 GeV. These data and additional $\omega$-photoproduction observables from CLAS were included in a partial-wave analysis within the Bonn-Gatchina framework. The double-polarization observable $E$ was studied for the reaction $\gamma p\to p\omega$ using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility and the longitudinally-polarized frozen-spin target (FROST). The observable was measured from the charged decay mode of the meson, $\omega\to\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0$, using a circularly-polarized tagged-photon beam with energies ranging from the $\omega$ threshold at 1.1 to 2.3 GeV. A partial-wave analysis within the Bonn-Gatchina framework found dominant contributions from the $3/2^+$ partial wave near threshold, which is identified with the sub-threshold $N(1720)\,3/2^+$ nucleon resonance. To describe the entire data set, which consisted of $\omega$ differential cross sections and a large variety of polarization observables, further contributions from other nucleon resonances were found to be necessary. With respect to non-resonant mechanisms, $\pi$ exchange in the $t$-channel was found to remain small across the analyzed energy range, while pomeron $t$-channel exchange gradually grew from the reaction threshold to dominate all other contributions above $W \approx 2$ GeV., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

A study of the partial-wave content of the $\gamma p\to \eta^\prime p$ reaction in the fourth resonance region is presented, which has been prompted by new measurements of polarization observables for that process. Using the Bonn-Gatchina partial-wave formalism, the incorporation of new data indicates that the $N(1895)1/2^-$, $N(1900)3/2^+$, $N(2100)1/2^+$, and $N(2120)3/2^-$ are the most significant contributors to the photoproduction process. New results for the branching ratios of the decays of these more prominent resonances to $N\eta^\prime$ final states are provided; such branches have not been indicated in the most recent edition of the Review of Particle Properties. Based on the analysis performed here, predictions for the helicity asymmetry $E$ for the $\gamma p\to \eta^\prime p$ reaction are presented., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables

We report the first measurement of differential and total cross sections for the ${\gamma}d \to K^0{\Lambda}(p)$ reaction, using data from the CLAS detector at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. Data collected during two separate experimental runs were studied with photon-energy coverage 0.8 - 3.6 GeV and 0.5 - 2.6 GeV, respectively. The two measurements are consistent giving confidence in the method and determination of systematic uncertainties. The cross sections are compared with predictions from the KAON-MAID theoretical model (without kaon exchange), which deviate from the data at higher W and at forward kaon angles. These data, along with previously published cross sections for $K^+ {\Lambda}$ photoproduction, provide essential constraints on the nucleon resonance spectrum. Photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ measurements for $\omega$ photoproduction in the reaction $\vec{\gamma} p \to \omega p$ are reported for photon energies from 1.152 to 1.876 GeV. Data were taken using a linearly-polarized tagged photon beam, a cryogenic hydrogen target, and the CLAS spectrometer in Hall B at Jefferson Lab. The measurements obtained markedly increase the size of the database for this observable, extend coverage to higher energies, and resolve discrepancies in previously published data. Comparisons of these new results with predictions from a chiral-quark-based model and from a dynamical coupled-channels model indicate the importance of interferences between $t$-channel meson exchange and $s$- and $u$-channel contributions, underscoring sensitivity to the nucleon resonances included in those descriptions. Comparisons with the Bonn-Gatchina partial-wave analysis indicate the $\Sigma$ data reported here help to fix the magnitudes of the interference terms between the leading amplitudes in that calculation (Pomeron exchange and the resonant portion of the $J^P=3/2^+$ partial wave), as well as the resonant portions of the smaller partial waves with $J^P$= $1/2^-$, $3/2^-$, and $5/2^+$., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

We report the first beam-target double-polarization asymmetries in the $\gamma + n(p) \rightarrow \pi^- + p(p)$ reaction spanning the nucleon resonance region from invariant mass $W$= $1500$ to $2300$ MeV. Circularly polarized photons and longitudinally polarized deuterons in $H\!D$ have been used with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The exclusive final state has been extracted using three very different analyses that show excellent agreement, and these have been used to deduce the {\it{E}} polarization observable for an effective neutron target. These results have been incorporated into new partial wave analyses, and have led to significant revisions for several $\gamma nN^*$ resonance photo-couplings., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; Physical Review Letters - in press

Measurements of the linearly-polarized photon beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for photoproduction from the proton of $\eta$ and $\eta^\prime$ mesons are reported. A linearly-polarized tagged photon beam produced by coherent bremsstrahlung was incident on a cryogenic hydrogen target within the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer. Results are presented for the $\gamma p \to \eta p$ reaction for incident photon energies from 1.070 to 1.876 GeV, and from 1.516 to 1.836 GeV for the $\gamma p \to \eta^\prime p$ reaction. For $\gamma p \to \eta p$, the data reported here considerably extend the range of measurements to higher energies, and are consistent with the few previously published measurements for this observable near threshold. For $\gamma p \to \eta^\prime p$, the results obtained are consistent with the few previously published measurements for this observable near threshold, but also greatly expand the incident photon energy coverage for that reaction. Initial analysis of the data reported here with the Bonn-Gatchina model strengthens the evidence for four nucleon resonances -- the $N(1895)1/2^-$, $N(1900)3/2^+$, $N(2100)1/2^+$ and $N(2120)3/2^-$ resonances -- which presently lack the "four-star" status in the current Particle Data Group compilation, providing examples of how these new measurements help refine models of the photoproduction process., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures

The helicity-dependent observable $E$ for the reaction $\gamma d\to \eta n (p)$ with a spectator proton was recently measured by the A2 Collaboration at MAMI in Mainz. The data were interpreted as further evidence for a narrow resonance with spin and parity $J^P=1/2^+$ ($P_{11}$ wave). However, a full partial wave analysis without any narrow resonance leads to an excellent description of the data, imposing a narrow resonance with the properties suggested by the A2 Collaboration leads to a significant deterioration of the fit quality: there is no need for a narrow resonance., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

New data on pion-photoproduction off the proton have been included in the partial wave analyses Bonn-Gatchina and SAID and in the dynamical coupled-channel approach J\"ulich-Bonn. All reproduce the recent new data well: the double polarization data for E, G, H, P and T in $\gamma p \to \pi^0 p$ from ELSA, the beam asymmetry $\Sigma$ for $\gamma p \to \pi^0 p$ and $\pi^+ n$ from Jefferson Laboratory, and the precise new differential cross section and beam asymmetry data $\Sigma$ for $\gamma p \to \pi^0 p$ from MAMI. The new fit results for the multipoles are compared with predictions not taking into account the new data. The mutual agreement is improved considerably but still far from being perfect.

This paper reports on a measurement of the double-polarization observable G in $\pi^0$ photoproduction off the proton using the CBELSA/TAPS experiment at the ELSA accelerator in Bonn. The observable G is determined from reactions of linearly-polarized photons with longitudinally-polarized protons. The polarized photons are produced by bremsstrahlung off a properly oriented diamond radiator. A frozen spin butanol target provides the polarized protons. The data cover the photon energy range from 617 to 1325 MeV and a wide angular range. The experimental results for G are compared to predictions by the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa), J\"ulich-Bonn (J\"uBo), MAID and SAID partial wave analyses. Implications of the new data for the pion photoproduction multipoles are discussed.

Data on the reaction $\gamma p\to \omega p$ with $\omega\to\pi^0\gamma$, taken with unpolarized or polarized beams in combination with an unpolarized or polarized proton-target, were analyzed within the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa) partial wave analysis. Differential cross sections, several spin density matrix elements, the beam asymmetry $\Sigma$, the normalized helicity difference $E$, and the correlation $G$ between linear photon and longitudinal target polarization were included in a large data base on pion and photo-induced reactions. The data on $\omega$ photoproduction are used to determine twelve $N^*\to N\omega$ branching ratios; most of these are determined for the first time., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables

The differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements for the reaction $\gamma p\to p\omega$ were measured using the CBELSA/TAPS experiment for initial photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 2.5 GeV. These observables were measured from the radiative decay of the $\omega$ meson, $\omega\to\pi^0\gamma$. The cross sections cover the full angular range and show the full extent of the $t$-channel forward rise. The overall shape of the angular distributions in the differential cross sections and unpolarized spin-density matrix elements are in fair agreement with previous data. In addition, for the first time, a beam of linearly-polarized tagged photons in the energy range from 1150 MeV to 1650 MeV was used to extract polarized spin-density matrix elements. These data were included in the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis (PWA). The dominant contribution to $\omega$ photoproduction near threshold was found to be the $3/2^+$ partial wave, which is primarily due to the sub-threshold $N(1720)\,3/2^+$ resonance. At higher energies, pomeron-exchange was found to dominate whereas $\pi$-exchange remained small. These $t$-channel contributions as well as further contributions from nucleon resonances were necessary to describe the entire dataset: the $1/2^-$, $3/2^-$, and $5/2^+$ partial waves were also found to contribute significantly., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Physics Letters B

The photoproduction of 2$\pi^0$ mesons off protons was studied with the Crystal Barrel/TAPS experiment at the electron accelerator ELSA in Bonn. The energy of photons produced in a radiator was tagged in the energy range from 600\,MeV to 2.5\,GeV. Differential and total cross sections and $p\pi^0\pi^0$ Dalitz plots are presented. Part of the data was taken with a diamond radiator producing linearly polarized photons, and beam asymmetries were derived. Properties of nucleon and $\Delta$ resonances contributing to the $p\pi^0\pi^0$ final state were determined within the BnGa partial wave analysis. The data presented here allow us to determine branching ratios of nucleon and $\Delta$ resonances for their decays into $p\pi^0\pi^0$ via several intermediate states. Most prominent are decays proceeding via $\Delta(1232)\pi$, $N(1440)1/2^+\pi$, $N(1520)3/2^-\pi$, $N(1680)5/2^+\pi$, but also $pf_0(500)$, $pf_0(980)$, and $pf_2(1270)$ contribute to the reaction., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures, 7 tables

Data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction $\gamma p\to p\pi^0$ are reported. Compared to earlier data from other experiments, our data are more precise and extend the covered range in energy and angle substantially. The results were extracted from azimuthal asymmetries measured using a transversely polarized target and linearly polarized photons. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA with the CBELSA/TAPS detector. Within the Bonn-Gatchina partial wave analysis, the new polarization data lead to a significant narrowing of the error band for the multipoles for neutral-pion photoproduction.

The first measurements of the beam-target-helicity-asymmetries $E$ and $G$ in the photoproduction of $\omega$-mesons off protons at the CBELSA/TAPS experiment are reported. $E$ ($G$) was measured using circularly (linearly) polarised photons and a longitudinally polarised target. $E$ was measured over the photon energy range from close to threshold ($E_\gamma = 1108$~MeV) to $E_\gamma = 2300$~MeV and $G$ at a single energy interval of $1108 < E_\gamma <1300$~MeV. Both measurements cover the full solid angle. The observables $E$ and $G$ are highly sensitive to the contribution of baryon resonances, with $E$ acting as a helicity filter in the $s$-channel. The new results indicate significant $s$-channel resonance contributions together with contributions from $t$-channel exchange processes. A partial wave analysis reveals strong contributions from the partial waves with spin-parity $J^P=3/2^+, 5/2^+$, and $3/2^-$., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We report a partial-wave analysis of new data on the double-polarization variable $E$ for the reactions $\gamma p\to \pi^+ n$ and $\gamma p\to \pi^0 p$ and of further data published earlier. The analysis within the Bonn-Gatchina (BnGa) formalism reveals evidence for a poorly known baryon resonance, the one-star $\Delta(2200)7/2^-$. This is the lowest-mass $\Delta^*$ resonance with spin-parity $J^P=7/2^-$. Its mass is significantly higher than the mass of its parity partner $\Delta(1950)7/2^+$ which is the lowest-mass $\Delta^*$ resonance with spin-parity $J^P=7/2^+$. It has been suggested that chiral symmetry might be restored in the high-mass region of hadron excitations, and that these two resonances should be degenerate in mass. First results from the longitudinally polarized frozen-spin target (FROST) program are reported. The double-polarization observable E, for the reaction $\vec \gamma \vec p \to \pi^+n$, has been measured using a circularly polarized tagged-photon beam, with energies from 0.35 to 2.37 GeV. The final-state pions were detected with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer in Hall B at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. These polarization data agree fairly well with previous partial-wave analyses at low photon energies. Over much of the covered energy range, however, significant deviations are observed, particularly in the high-energy region where high-L multipoles contribute. The data have been included in new multipole analyses resulting in updated nucleon resonance parameters. The recent precise experimental results for the photoproduction of $\eta$-mesons off the neutron measured with the Crystal Ball/TAPS calorimeter at the MAMI accelerator have been investigated in detail in the framework of the Bonn-Gatchina coupled channel model. The main result is that the narrow structure observed in the excitation function of $\gamma n \rightarrow n\eta$ can be reproduced fully with a particular interference pattern in the $J^P=1/2^-$ partial wave. Introduction of the narrow resonance $N(1685)$ with the properties reported in earlier publications deteriorates the quality of the fit., Comment: 10 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in EPJA

New data on the polarization observables T, P, and H for the reaction $\gamma p \to p\pi^0$ are reported. The results are extracted from azimuthal asymmetries when a transversely polarized butanol target and a linearly polarized photon beam are used. The data were taken at the Bonn electron stretcher accelerator ELSA using the CBELSA/TAPS detector. These and earlier data are used to perform a truncated energy-independent partial wave analysis in sliced-energy bins. This energy-independent analysis is compared to the results from energy-dependent partial wave analyses.

The reaction $\gamma \, p \rightarrow K^0_S\,\Sigma^+$ is studied in the photon energy range from threshold. Linearly polarised photon beams from coherent bremsstrahlung enabled the first measurement of photon beam asymmetries in this reaction up to $E_\gamma = 2250$ MeV. In addition, the recoil hyperon polarisation was determined through the asymmetry in the weak decay $\Sigma^+ \rightarrow p \pi^0$ up to $E_\gamma = 1650$ MeV. The data are compared to partial wave analyses, and the possible impact on the interpretation of a recently observed cusp-like structure near the $K^*$ thresholds is discussed., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. Using all recent data on the differential cross sections and spin observables for the reaction $\gamma p \to K^+ \Lambda$, an energy-independent partial-wave analysis is performed. The analysis requires multipoles up to $L = 2$; there is no evidence that the fit requires multipoles with $L=3$. At present the available data allow us to extract the dominant multipoles only. These are compatible with the multipoles obtained in the energy-dependent fit. This result supports the reliability of the Bonn-Gatchina energy-dependent results., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

The first measurement of the helicity dependence of the photoproduction cross section of single neutral pions off protons is reported for photon energies from 600 to 2300\,MeV, covering nearly the full solid angle. The data are compared to predictions from the SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses. Strikingly large differences between data and predictions are observed which are traced to differences in the helicity amplitudes of well known and established resonances. Precise values for the helicity amplitudes of several resonances are reported.

The excitation function and momentum distribution of $\eta^\prime$ mesons have been measured in photon induced reactions on $^{12}{}$C in the energy range of 1250-2600 MeV. The experiment was performed with tagged photon beams from the ELSA electron accelerator using the Crystal Barrel and TAPS detectors. The data are compared to model calculations to extract information on the sign and magnitude of the real part of the $\eta^\prime$-nucleus potential. Within the model, the comparison indicates an attractive potential of -($37 \pm 10(stat)\pm10(syst)$) MeV depth at normal nuclear matter density. Since the modulus of this depth is larger than the modulus of the imaginary part of the $\eta^\prime$-nucleus potential of -($10\pm2.5$) MeV, determined by transparency ratio measurements, a search for resolved $\eta^\prime$-bound states appears promising., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Ambiguities of the signs of $N\to \Sigma K$ coupling constants are studied in a multichannel partial wave analysis of a large body of pion and photo-induced reactions. It is shown that the signs are not free from some ambiguities, and further experimental data are needed. Data on the reactions $\pi^+p\to \Sigma^+K^+$ and $\gamma p\to K^+\Sigma^0$ define rather well the isospin 3/2 contributions to these channels. However the lack of information on polarization observables for the reactions $\pi^-p\to \Sigma^0K^0$, $\pi^-p\to \Sigma^-K^+$ and $\gamma p\to K^0\Sigma^+$ does not allow us to fix uniquely the signs of $N\to \Sigma K$ coupling constants. As a consequence, also the contributions of nucleon resonances to these channels remain uncertain., Comment: 8 pages, 12 figures

Amplitudes for the reaction $\pi^-p\to \Lambda K^0$ are reconstructed from data on the differential cross section $d\sigma/d\Omega$, the recoil polarization $P$, and on the spin rotation parameter $\beta$. At low energies, no data on $\beta$ exist, resulting in ambiguities. An approximation using $S$ and $P$ waves leads only to a fair description of the data on $d\sigma/d\Omega$ and $P$; in this case, there are two sets of amplitudes. Including $D$ waves, the data on $d\sigma/d\Omega$ and $P$ are well reproduced by the fit but now, there are several distinct solutions which describe the data with identical precision. In the range where the spin rotation parameter $\beta$ was measured, a full and unambiguous reconstruction of the partial wave amplitudes is possible. The energy-independent amplitudes are compared to the energy dependent amplitudes which resulted from a coupled channel fit (BnGa2011-02) to a large data set including both pion and photo-induced reactions. Significant deviations are observed. Consistency between energy dependent and energy independent solutions by choosing the energy independent solution which is closest to the energy dependent solution. In a second step, the {\it known} energy dependent solution for low (or high) partial waves is imposed and only the high (or low) partial waves are fitted leading to smaller uncertainties.

The helicity amplitudes $A^{1/2}_n$ and $A^{3/2}_n$ for the photoexcitation of nucleon resonances off neutrons are determined in a multi-channel partial-wave analysis., Comment: submitted to EPJ A

The first measurement is reported of the double-polarization observable G in photoproduction of neutral pions off protons, covering the photon energy range from 620 to 1120 MeV and the full solid angle. G describes the correlation between the photon polarization plane and the scattering plane for protons polarized along the direction of the incoming photon. The observable is highly sensitive to contributions from baryon resonances. The new results are compared to the predictions from SAID, MAID, and BnGa partial wave analyses. In spite of the long-lasting efforts to understand {\gamma}p -> p{\pi} 0 as the simplest photoproduction reaction, surprisingly large differences between the new data and the latest predictions are observed which are traced to different contributions of the N (1535) with spin-parity J^P = 1/2^- and N (1520) with J^P = 3/2^- . In the third resonance region, where N (1680) with J^P = 5/2^+ production dominates, the new data are reasonably close to the predictions., Comment: Submitted for publication in PRL

The photoproduction of \eta'-mesons off different nuclei has been measured with the CBELSA/TAPS detector system for incident photon energies between 1500 - 2200 MeV. The transparency ratio has been deduced and compared to theoretical calculations describing the propagation of \eta'-mesons in nuclei. The comparison indicates a width of the \eta' -meson of the order of \Gamma= 15-25 MeV at \rho =\rho_0 for an average momentum p_{\eta'} = 1050 MeV/c, at which the \eta'-meson is produced in the nuclear rest frame. The inelastic \eta' N cross section is estimated to be 3 - 10 mb. Parameterizing the photoproduction cross section of \eta'-mesons by \sigma(A) = \sigma_0 A^{\alpha}, a value of \alpha = 0.84\pm0.03 has been deduced., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

The $\gamma + p \rightarrow K^0 + \Sigma^+$ photoproduction reaction is investigated in the energy region from threshold to $E_\gamma = 2250$\,MeV. The differential cross section exhibits increasing forward-peaking with energy, but only up to the $K^*$ threshold. Beyond, it suddenly returns to a flat distribution with the forward cross section dropping by a factor of four. In the total cross section a pronounced structure is observed between the $K^*\Lambda$ and $K^*\Sigma$ thresholds. It is speculated whether this signals the turnover of the reaction mechanism from t-channel exchange below the $K^*$ production threshold to an s-channel mechanism associated with the formation of a dynamically generated $K^*$-hyperon intermediate state., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Evidence is reported for two nucleon resonances with spin-parity $J^P=1/2^-$ and $J^P=3/2^-$ at a mass just below 1.9\,GeV. The evidence is derived from a coupled-channel analysis of a large number of pion and photo-produced reactions. The two resonances are nearly degenerate in mass with two resonances of the same spin but positive parity. Such parity doublets are predicted in models claiming restoration of chiral symmetry in high-mass excitations of the nucleon. Further examples of spin parity doublets are found in addition. Alternatively, the spin doublet can be interpreted as member of the 56-plet expected in the third excitation band of the nucleon.
