Search

Magnetic nanoparticles play a crucial role in different fields such as biomedicine or information and quantum technologies. These applications require nanoparticles with a single, well-defined energy minimum, free of metastable states, and characterized by narrow switching field distributions. Here, we demonstrate that high-transition-temperature nanoSQUIDs can be successfully applied to the characterization of individual nanodiscs hosting magnetic vortices. We present measurements performed under varying temperature and external magnetic field, revealing signatures of ubiquitous, multiple metastable configurations. We also demonstrate that metastability can be reduced by introducing an intended asymmetry. NanoSQUID measurements can be applied to optimize the fabrication of on-demand spin-texture states, such as degenerated vortices or particles with fixed circulation and deterministic and narrow switching probabilities.

We investigate the coupling factor $\phi_\mu$ that quantifies the magnetic flux $\Phi$ per magnetic moment $\mu$ of a point-like magnetic dipole that couples to a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID). Representing the dipole by a current-carrying loop, the reciprocity of mutual inductances of SQUID and loop provides a way of calculating $\phi_\mu(\vec{r}, \vec{e}_\mu)$ vs.~position $\vec{r}$ and orientation $\vec{e}_\mu$ of the dipole anywhere in space from the magnetic field $B(\vec{r})$ produced by a supercurrent circulating in the SQUID loop. We use numerical simulations based on London and Ginzburg-Landau theory to calculate $\phi_\mu$ from the supercurrent density distributions in various SQUID geometries. We treat the far-field regime ($r\gtrsim a=$ inner size of the SQUID loop) with the dipole placed on the symmetry axis of circular or square shaped loops. We compare expressions for $\phi_\mu$ from filamentary loop models with simulation results for loops with finite width $w$ (outer size $A>a$), thickness $d$ and London penetration depth $\lambda_L$ and show that for thin ($d\ll a$) and narrow ($w < a$) loops the introduction of an effective loop size $a_{\rm eff}$ in the filamentary loop-model expressions results in agreement with simulations. For a dipole placed in the center of the loop, simulations provide an expression $\phi_\mu(a,A,d,\lambda_L)$ that covers a wide parameter range. In the near-field regime (dipole centered at small distance $z$ above one SQUID arm) only coupling to a single strip representing the SQUID arm has to be considered. Here, we compare simulations with an analytical expression derived for a homogeneous current density distribution, which yields excellent agreement for $\lambda_L>w,d$. Moreover, we analyze $\phi_\mu$ provided by the introduction of a constriction in the SQUID arm below the magnetic dipole.

Using a $30\,\mathrm{keV}$ focused He ion beam (He-FIB) with a wide range of irradiation doses $D=100$ to $1000\,\mathrm{ions/nm}$ we fabricated Josephson and resistive barriers within microbridges of epitaxially grown single crystalline YBCO thin films and investigated the change of their electric transport properties with time. One set of samples (#1A) was simply stored at room temperature under nitrogen atmosphere. A second set (#2D) was post-annealed at $90^\circ\,\mathrm{C}$ using high oxygen pressures and a third set (#2E) at low oxygen pressures. We found that for #1A the critical current density $j_c$ at $4.2\,\mathrm{K}$ changes as $j_c\propto\exp(-\sqrt{t/\tau})$ with time $t$, where the relaxation times $\tau$ increases exponentially with $D$, which can be described within a limited diffusion based model. In order to increase the diffusion rate we annealed the junctions from #2D at $90^\circ\,\mathrm{C}$ for $30\,\mathrm{min}$ in oxygen environment. Directly after annealing the critical current density $j_c$ increased, while the normal state resistance $R_n$ decreased. Repeated measurements showed that within a week the junctions relaxed to a quasi-stable state, in which the time scale for junction parameter variations increased to several weeks, making this a feasible option to achieve temporal stability of parameters of He-FIB Josephson junctions in YBCO.

We introduce an equivalent-circuit element based on the theory of interface pinning in random systems, to analyze the contribution of domain wall motion below the coercive field to the impedance of a ferroelectric, as a function of amplitude $E_0$ and frequency $f$ of an applied ac electric field. We investigate capacitor stacks, containing ferroelectric 0.5(Ba$_{0.7}$Ca$_{0.3}$)TiO$_{3}$--0.5Ba(Zr$_{0.2}$Ti$_{0.8}$)O$_{3}$ (BCZT) thin films, epitaxially grown by pulsed laser deposition on Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$ single crystal substrates and covered with Au electrodes. Impedance spectra from $f=10$\,Hz to 1\,MHz were collected at different $E_0$. Deconvolution of the spectra is achieved by fitting the measured impedance with an equivalent-circuit model of the capacitor stacks, and we extract the domain-wall-motion induced amplitude- and frequency-dependent dielectric response of the BCZT films from the obtained fit parameters. From an extended Rayleigh analysis, we quantify the coupling strength between dielectric nonlinearity and dielectric dispersion in the BCZT films and identify different domain-wall-motion regimes. Finally, we construct a schematic diagram of the different domain-wall-motion regimes and discuss the corresponding domain-wall dynamics.

We report on the fabrication and characterization of nanopatterned dc SQUIDs with grain boundary Josephson junctions based on heteroepitaxially grown YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO)/ SiTrO$_3$ (STO) superlattices on STO bicrystal substrates. Nanopatterning is performed by Ga focused-ion-beam milling. The electric transport properties and thermal white flux noise of superlattice nanoSQUIDs are comparable to single layer YBCO devices on STO bicrystals. However, we find that the superlattice nanoSQUIDs have more than an order of magnitude smaller low-frequency excess flux noise, with root-mean-square spectral density $S_\Phi^{1/2}\sim 5-6\,\mu\Phi_0/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ at 1 Hz ($\Phi_0$ is the magnetic flux quantum). We attribute this improvement to an improved microstructure at the grain boundaries forming the Josephson junctions in our YBCO nanoSQUDs., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

Phase-locking of oscillators leads to superradiant amplification of the emission power. This is particularly important for development of THz sources, which suffer from low emission efficacy. In this work we study large Josephson junction arrays containing several thousands of Nb-based junctions. Using low-temperature scanning laser microscopy we observe that at certain bias conditions two-dimensional standing-wave patterns are formed, manifesting global synchronization of the arrays. Analysis of standing waves indicates that they are formed by surface plasmon type electromagnetic waves propagating at the electrode/substrate interface. Thus we demonstrate that surface waves provide an effective mechanism for long-range coupling and phase-locking of large junction arrays., Comment: 6 pages, 3 Figures

We present a method for the simultaneous observation of heteronuclear multi-quantum coherences (up to the 3rd order), which give an additional degree of freedom for ultralow magnetic field (ULF) MR experiments, where the chemical shift is negligible. The nonequilibrium spin state is generated by Signal Amplification By Reversible Exchange (SABRE) and detected at ULF with SQUID-based NMR. We compare the results obtained by the heteronuclei Correlated SpectroscopY (COSY) with a Flip Angle FOurier Series (FAFOS) method. COSY allows a quantitative analysis of homo- and heteronuclei quantum coherences.

By scanning with a $30\, \mathrm{keV}$ focused He ion beam (He-FIB) across YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) thin film microbridges, we create Josephson barriers with critical current density $j_\mathrm{c}$ adjustable by irradiation dose $D$. The dependence $j_\mathrm{c} (D)$ yields an exponential decay. At $4.2\, \mathrm{K}$, a transition from flux-flow to Josephson behavior occurs when $j_\mathrm{c}$ decreases below $\approx 2\, \mathrm{MA/cm^2}$. The Josephson junctions exhibit current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) that are well described by the resistively and capacitively shunted junction model, without excess current for characteristic voltages $V_\mathrm{c} \lesssim 1\, \mathrm{mV}$. Devices on MgO and LSAT substrates show non-hysteretic IVCs, while devices on SrTiO$_3$ show a small hysteresis. For all junctions an approximate scaling $V_\mathrm{c} \propto j_\mathrm{c}^{1/2}$ is found. He-FIB irradiation with high dose produces barriers with $j_\mathrm{c}=0$ and high resistances of $10\, \mathrm{k\Omega} \ldots 1\, \mathrm{G\Omega}$. This provides the possibility to write highly resistive walls or areas into YBCO using a He-FIB. Transmission electron microscopy reveals an amorphous phase within the walls, whereas for lower doses the YBCO stays crystalline. We have also ``drawn'' superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) by using a He-FIB for definition of the SQUID hole and the junctions. The SQUIDs show high performance, with flux noise $< 500\, \mathrm{n \Phi_0/Hz^{1/2}}$ in the thermal white noise limit for a device with $19\, \mathrm{pH}$ inductance.

We report on direct, real-space imaging of the stray magnetic field above a micro-scale disc of a thin film of the high-temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-\delta}$ (YBCO) using scanning single spin magnetometry. Our experiments yield a direct measurement of the sample's local London penetration depth and allow for a quantitative reconstruction of the supercurrents flowing in the sample as a result of Meissner screening. These results show the potential of scanning single spin magnetometry for studies of the nanoscale magnetic properties of thin-film superconductors, which could be readily extended to elevated temperatures or magnetic fields., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate coupling of magnetically trapped ultracold $^87$Rb ground state atoms to a coherently driven superconducting coplanar resonator on an integrated atom chip. We measure the microwave field strength in the cavity through observation of the AC shift of the hyperfine transition frequency when the cavity is driven off-resonance from the atomic transition. The measured shifts are used to reconstruct the field in the resonator, in close agreement with transmission measurements of the cavity, giving proof of the coupling between atoms and resonator. When driving the cavity in resonance with the atoms, we observe Rabi oscillations between atomic hyperfine states, demonstrating coherent control of the atomic states through the cavity field. The observation of two-photon Rabi oscillations using an additional external radio frequency enables the preparation of magnetically trapped coherent superposition states near the superconducting cavity, which are required for the implementation of an atomic quantum memory., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures + Supplementary Materials (9 pages, 9 figures)

We demonstrate the operation of low-noise nano superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) based on the high critical field and high critical temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ (YBCO) as ultra-sensitive magnetometers for single magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs). The nanoSQUIDs exploit the Josephson behavior of YBCO grain boundaries and have been patterned by focused ion beam milling. This allows to precisely define the lateral dimensions of the SQUIDs so as to achieve large magnetic coupling between the nanoloop and individual MNPs. By means of focused electron beam induced deposition, cobalt MNPs with typical size of several tens of nm have been grown directly on the surface of the sensors with nanometric spatial resolution. Remarkably, the nanoSQUIDs are operative over extremely broad ranges of applied magnetic field (-1 T $< \mu_0 H <$ 1 T) and temperature (0.3 K $< T<$ 80 K). All these features together have allowed us to perform magnetization measurements under different ambient conditions and to detect the magnetization reversal of individual Co MNPs with magnetic moments (1 - 30) $\times 10^6\,\mu_{\rm B}$. Depending on the dimensions and shape of the particles we have distinguished between two different magnetic states yielding different reversal mechanisms. The magnetization reversal is thermally activated over an energy barrier, which has been quantified for the (quasi) single-domain particles. Our measurements serve to show not only the high sensitivity achievable with YBCO nanoSQUIDs, but also demonstrate that these sensors are exceptional magnetometers for the investigation of the properties of individual nanomagnets.

Superconducting Quantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) are one of the most popular devices in superconducting electronics. They combine the Josephson effect with the quantization of magnetic flux in superconductors. This gives rise to one of the most beautiful manifestations of macroscopic quantum coherence in the solid state. In addition, SQUIDs are extremely sensitive sensors allowing to transduce magnetic flux into measurable electric signals. As a consequence, any physical observable that can be converted into magnetic flux, e.g., current, magnetization, magnetic field or position, becomes easily accessible to SQUID sensors. In the late 1980's it became clear that downsizing the dimensions of SQUIDs to the nanometric scale would encompass an enormous increase of their sensitivity to localized tiny magnetic signals. Indeed, nanoSQUIDs opened the way to the investigation of, e.g., individual magnetic nanoparticles or surface magnetic states with unprecedented sensitivities. The purpose of this review is to present a detailed survey of microscopic and nanoscopic SQUID sensors. We will start by discussing the principle of operation of SQUIDs, placing the emphasis on their application as ultrasensitive detectors for small localized magnetic signals. We will continue by reviewing a number of existing devices based on different kinds of Josephson junctions and materials, focusing on their advantages and drawbacks. The last sections are left for applications of nanoSQUIDs in the fields of scanning SQUID microscopy and magnetic particle characterization, putting special stress on the investigation of individual magnetic nanoparticles.

We demonstrate experimentally the operation of a deterministic Josephson ratchet with tunable asymmetry. The ratchet is based on a $\varphi$ Josephson junction with a ferromagnetic barrier operating in the underdamped regime. The system is probed also under the action of an additional dc current, which acts as a counter force trying to stop the ratchet. Under these conditions the ratchet works against the counter force, thus producing a non-zero output power. Finally, we estimate the efficiency of the $\varphi$ Josephson junction ratchet.

We propose simple models for the current-voltage characteristics of typical Josephson ratchets. We consider the case of a ratchet working against a constant applied counter force and derive analytical expressions for the key characteristics of such a ratchet: rectification curve, stopping force, input and output powers and rectification efficiency. Optimization of the ratchet performance is discussed.

We present the design, realization and performance of a three-axis vector nano Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (nanoSQUID). It consists of three mutually orthogonal SQUID nanoloops that allow distinguishing the three components of the vector magnetic moment of individual nanoparticles placed at a specific position. The device is based on Nb/HfTi/Nb Josephson junctions and exhibits linewidths of $\sim 250$ nm and inner loop areas of $600 \times 90$ nm$^2$ and $500 \times 500$ nm$^2$. Operation at temperature $T=4.2$ K, under external magnetic fields up to $\sim 50$ mT is demonstrated. The experimental flux noise below $\sim 250$ ${\rm n}\Phi_0/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ in the white noise limit and the reduced dimensions lead to a total calculated spin sensitivity of $\sim 630$ $\mu_{\rm B}/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ and $\sim 70$ $\mu_{\rm B}/\sqrt{\rm Hz}$ for the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the vector magnetic moment, respectively. The potential of the device for studying tridimensional properties of individual nanomagnets is discussed.

We investigate the magnetization reversal mechanism in an individual permalloy (Py) nanotube (NT) using a hybrid magnetometer consisting of a nanometer-scale SQUID (nanoSQUID) and a cantilever torque sensor. The Py NT is affixed to the tip of a Si cantilever and positioned in order to optimally couple its stray flux into a Nb nanoSQUID. We are thus able to measure both the NT's volume magnetization by dynamic cantilever magnetometry and its stray flux using the nanoSQUID. We observe a training effect and temperature dependence in the magnetic hysteresis, suggesting an exchange bias. We find a low blocking temperature $T_B = 18 \pm 2$ K, indicating the presence of a thin antiferromagnetic native oxide, as confirmed by X-ray absorption spectroscopy on similar samples. Furthermore, we measure changes in the shape of the magnetic hysteresis as a function of temperature and increased training. These observations show that the presence of a thin exchange-coupled native oxide modifies the magnetization reversal process at low temperatures. Complementary information obtained via cantilever and nanoSQUID magnetometry allows us to conclude that, in the absence of exchange coupling, this reversal process is nucleated at the NT's ends and propagates along its length as predicted by theory., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

We consider a short Josephson junction with a phase discontinuity $\kappa$ created, e.g., by a pair of tiny current injectors, at some point $x_0$ along the length of the junction. We derive the effective current-phase relation (CPR) for the system as a whole, i.e., reduce it to an effective point-like junction. From the effective CPR we obtain the ground state of the system and predict the dependence of its critical current on $\kappa$. We show that in a large range of $\kappa$ values the effective junction behaves as a $\varphi_0$ Josephson junction, i.e., has a unique ground state phase $\varphi_0$ within each $2\pi$ interval. For $\kappa\approx\pi$ and $x_0$ near the middle of the junction one obtains a $\varphi_0\pm\varphi$ junction, i.e., the Josephson junction with degenerate ground state phase $\varphi_0\pm\varphi$ within each $2\pi$ interval. Further, in view of possible escape experiments especially in the quantum domain, we investigate the scaling of the energy barrier and eigenfrequency close to the critical currents and predict the behavior of the escape histogram width $\sigma(\kappa)$ in the regime of the macroscopic quantum tunneling.

We study a 0-$\pi$ dc superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) with asymmetric inductances and critical currents of the two Josephson junctions (JJs). By considering such a dc SQUID as a black box with two terminals, we calculate its effective current-phase relation $I_s(\psi)$ and the Josephson energy $U(\psi)$, where $\psi$ is the Josephson phase across the terminals. We show that there is a domain of parameters where the black box has the properties of a $\varphi$ JJ with degenerate ground state phases $\psi=\pm\varphi$. The $\varphi$ domain is rather large, so one can easily construct a $\varphi$ JJ experimentally. We derive the current phase relation and show that it can be tuned \emph{in situ} by applying an external magnetic flux resulting in a continuous transition between the systems with static solutions $\psi=\pm\varphi$, $\psi=\varphi_0$ ($\varphi_0 \neq 0,\pi$) and even $\psi=\varphi_0\pm\varphi$. We report on the magnetic trapping of an ultracold ensemble of $^{87}$Rb atoms close to a superconducting ring prepared in different states of quantized magnetic flux. The niobium ring of 10 $\mu$m radius is prepared in a flux state $n \Phi_0$, with $\Phi_0 = h / 2e$ the flux quantum and $n$ varies between $\pm 5$. An atomic cloud of 250 nK temperature is positioned with a harmonic magnetic trapping potential at $\sim 18 \mu$m distance below the ring. The inhomogeneous magnetic field of the supercurrent in the ring contributes to the magnetic trapping potential of the cloud. The induced deformation of the magnetic trap impacts the shape of the cloud, the number of trapped atoms as well as the center-of-mass oscillation frequency of Bose-Einstein condensates. When the field applied during cooldown of the chip is varied, the change of these properties shows discrete steps that quantitatively match flux quantization., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We used one-dimensional coupled sine-Gordon equations combined with heat diffusion equations to numerically investigate the thermal and electromagnetic properties of a $300\,\mu\mathrm{m}$ long intrinsic Josephson junction stack consisting of $N = 700$ junctions. The junctions in the stack are combined to $M$ segments where we assume that inside a segment all junctions behave identically. Most simulations are for $M = 20$. For not too high bath temperatures there is the appearence of a hot spot at high bias currents. In terms of electromagnetic properties, robust standing wave patterns appear in the current density and electric field distributions. These patterns come together with vortex/antivortex lines across the stack that correspond to $\pi$ kink states, discussed before in the literature for a homogeneous temperature distribution in the stack. We also discuss scaling of the thermal and electromagnetic properties with $M$, on the basis of simulations with $M$ between 10 and 350., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures

We demonstrate a high-frequency generator operating at ~200GHz based on flipping a semifluxon in a Josephson junction of moderate normalized length. The semifluxon spontaneously appears at the $\pi$ discontinuity of the Josephson phase artificially created by means of two tiny current injectors. The radiation is detected by an on-chip detector (tunnel junction). The estimated radiation power (at the detector) is ~8nW and should be compared with the dc power of ~100nW consumed by the generator. The measured radiation linewidth, as low as 1.1MHz, is typical for geometrical (Fiske) resonances although we tried to suppress such resonances by placing well-matched microwave transformers at its both ends. Making use of a phase-locking feedback loop we are able to reduce the radiation linewidth to less than 1Hz measured relative to the reference oscillator and defined just by the resolution of our measurement setup.

Knowledge of the electron sampling depth and related saturation effects is important for quantitative analysis of X-ray absorption spectroscopy data, yet for oxides with the perovskite structure no quantitative values are so far available. Here we study absorption saturation in films of two of the most-studied perovskites, LCMO and YBCO, at the L2,3 edge of Mn and Cu, respectively. By measuring the electron-yield intensity as a function of photon incidence angle and film thickness, the sampling depth d, photon attenuation length, lambda, and the ratio lambda/d have been independently determined between 50 and 300 K. The extracted sampling depth dLCMO=3 nm for LCMO at high temperatures in its polaronic insulator state (150-300K) is not much larger than values reported for pure transition metals (d Co or Ni=2-2.5nm) at room temperature, but it is smaller than dYBCO=3.9 nm for metallic YBCO that is in turn smaller than the value reported for Fe3O4 (d=4.5 nm) The measured dLCMO increases to 4.5 nm when LCMO is in the metallic state at low temperatures. These results indicate that a universal rule of thumb for the sampling depth in oxides cannot be assumed, and that it can be measurably influenced by electronic phase transitions that derive from strong correlations., Comment: 19 pages, 7 figures

Using the Usadel equation approach, we provide a compact formalism to calculate the critical current density of 21 different types of ferromagnetic (F) Josephson junctions containing insulating (I) and normal metal (N) layers in the weak link regions. In particular, we obtain that even a thin additional N layer may shift the 0-$\pi$ transitions to larger or smaller values of the thickness $d_F$ of the ferromagnet, depending on its conducting properties. For certain values of $d_F$, a 0-$\pi$ transition can even be achieved by changing only the N layer thickness. We use our model to fit experimental data of SIFS and SINFS tunnel junctions, where S is a superconducting electrode.

We describe the preparation of ultra cold atomic clouds in a dilution refrigerator. The closed cycle 3He/4He cryostat was custom made to provide optical access for laser cooling, optical manipulation and detection of atoms. We show that the cryostat meets the requirements for cold atom experiments, specifically in terms of operating a magneto-optical trap, magnetic traps and magnetic transport under ultra high vacuum conditions. The presented system is a step towards the creation of a quantum hybrid system combining ultra cold atoms and solid state quantum devices., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We report on the observation of dendritic flux avalanches in a large Niobium single crystal. In contrast to avalanches observed in thin films, they appear only in a very narrow temperature interval of about a tenth of a Kelvin near the critical temperature of Nb. At a fixed temperature, we find two sets of dendritic structures, which differ by the magnetic field required for their formation and by the maximum distance the dendrites penetrate into the sample. The effect is caused by dendritic flux penetration into thin superconducting surface layers formed in the single crystal close to the critical temperature.

We consider a $\varphi$ Josephson junction, which has a bistable zero-voltage state with the stationary phases $\psi=\pm\varphi$. In the non-zero voltage state the phase "moves" viscously along a tilted periodic double-well potential. When the tilting is reduced quasistatically, the phase is retrapped in one of the potential wells. We study the viscous phase dynamics to determine in which well ($-\varphi$ or $+\varphi$) the phase is retrapped for a given damping, when the junction returns from the finite-voltage state back to zero-voltage state. In the limit of low damping the $\varphi$ Josephson junction exhibits a butterfly effect --- extreme sensitivity of the destination well on damping. This leads to an impossibility to predict the destination well.

Recently it has been found that, when operated at large input power, the linewidth of terahertz radiation emitted from intrinsic Josephson junction stacks can be as narrow as some megahertz. In this high-bias regime a hot spot coexists with regions which are still superconducting. Surprisingly, the linewidth was found to decrease with increasing bath temperature. We present a simple model describing the dynamics of the stack in the presence of a hot spot by two parallel arrays of pointlike Josephson junctions and an additional shunt resistor in parallel. Heat diffusion is taken into account by thermally coupling all elements to a bath at temperature T_b. We present current-voltage characteristics of the coupled system and calculations of the linewidth of the radiation as a function of T_b. In the presence of a spatial gradient of the junction parameters critical current and resistance, the linewidth deceases with increasing T_b, similar to the experimental observation., Comment: accepted in PRB

The $\varphi$ Josephson junction has a doubly degenerate ground state with the Josephson phases $\pm\varphi$. We demonstrate the use of such a $\varphi$ Josephson junction as a memory cell (classical bit), where writing is done by applying a magnetic field and reading by applying a bias current. Using an optimally coupled nanometer-scale superconducting quantum interference device, we measure the magnetic flux originating from an individual ferromagnetic Ni nanotube attached to a Si cantilever. At the same time, we detect the nanotube's volume magnetization using torque magnetometry. We observe both the predicted reversible and irreversible reversal processes. A detailed comparison with micromagnetic simulations suggests that vortex-like states are formed in different segments of the individual nanotube. Nanoscale magnets might form the building blocks of next generation memories. To explore their functionality, magnetic sensing at the nanoscale is key. We present a multifunctional combination of a scanning nanometer-sized superconducting quantum interference device (nanoSQUID) and a Ni nanotube attached to an ultrasoft cantilever as a magnetic tip. We map out and analyze the magnetic coupling between the Ni tube and the Nb nanoSQUID, demonstrate imaging of an Abrikosov vortex trapped in the SQUID structure - which is important in ruling out spurious magnetic signals - and reveal the high potential of the nanoSQUID as an ultrasensitive displacement detector. We consider an infinitely long 0-$\pi$ Josephson junction consisting of 0 and $\pi$ regions having different critical current densities $j_{c,0}$ and $j_{c,\pi}$. The ground state of such a junction corresponds to a spontaneosly formed asymmetric semifluxon with tails decaying on different length scales. We calculate the depinning current of such a fractional vortex and show that it is different for positive and negative bias polarity. We also show that upon application of a bias current, the fractional flux (topological charge) associated with the vortex changes. We calculate the range of fractional flux associated with the vortex when the bias changes from negative to positive critical (depinning) values., Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev. B

The coherence of quantum systems is crucial to quantum information processing. While it has been demonstrated that superconducting qubits can process quantum information at microelectronics rates, it remains a challenge to preserve the coherence and therefore the quantum character of the information in these systems. An alternative is to share the tasks between different quantum platforms, e.g. cold atoms storing the quantum information processed by superconducting circuits. In our experiment, we characterize the coherence of superposition states of 87Rb atoms magnetically trapped on a superconducting atom-chip. We load atoms into a persistent-current trap engineered in the vicinity of an off-resonance coplanar resonator, and observe that the coherence of hyperfine ground states is preserved for several seconds. We show that large ensembles of a million of thermal atoms below 350 nK temperature and pure Bose-Einstein condensates with 3.5 x 10^5 atoms can be prepared and manipulated at the superconducting interface. We calculate the current phase relation of a planar Josephson junction with a ferromagnetic weak link located on top of a thin normal metal film. Following experimental observations we assume transparent superconductor-ferromagnet interfaces. This provides the best interlayer coupling and a low suppression of the superconducting correlations penetrating from the superconducting electrodes into the ferromagnetic layer. We show that this Josephson junction is a promising candidate for an experimental {\phi} junction realization., Comment: References updated

We propose to create pairs of semifluxons starting from a flat-phase state in long, optical 0-pi-0 Josephson junctions formed with internal electronic states of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates. In this optical system, we can dynamically tune the length of the pi-junction, the detuning of the optical transition, or the strength of the laser-coupling, to induce transitions from the flat-phase state to such a semifluxon-pair state. Similarly as in superconducting 0-pi-0 junctions, there are two, energetically degenerate semifluxon-pair states. A linear mean-field model with two internal electronic states explains this degeneracy and shows the distinct static field configuration in a phase-diagram of the junction parameters. This optical system offers the possibility to dynamically create a coherent superposition of the distinct semifluxon-pair states and observe macroscopic quantum oscillation., Comment: 5 pages latex, 4 eps figures

We have measured the electrical properties of a V2O3 thin film micro bridge at the insulator metal transition (IMT). Discontinuous jumps to lower voltages in the current voltage characteristic (IV) followed by an approximately constant voltage progression for high currents indicate an electrical breakdown of the device. In addition, the IV curve shows hysteresis and a training effect, i.e. the subsequent IV loops are different from the first IV loop after thermal cycling. Low temperature scanning electron microscopy (LTSEM) reveals that the electrical breakdown over the whole device is caused by the formation of electro-thermal domains (ETDs), i.e. the current and temperature redistribution in the device. On the contrary, at the nanoscale, the electrical breakdown causes the IMT of individual domains. In a numerical model we considered these domains as a network of resistors and we were able to reproduce the electro-thermal breakdown as well as the hysteresis and the training effect in the IVs.

For high-performance superconducting quantum devices based on Josephson junctions (JJs) decreasing lateral sizes is of great importance. Fabrication of sub-\mu m JJs is challenging due to non-flat surfaces with step heights of up to several 100 nm generated during the fabrication process. We have refined a fabrication process with significantly decreased film thicknesses, resulting in almost flat surfaces at intermediate steps during the JJ definition. In combination with a mix-&-match process, combining electron-beam lithography (EBL) and conventional photolithography, we can fabricate JJs with lateral dimensions down to 0.023 \mu m^2. We propose this refined process as an alternative to the commonly used chemical-mechanical polishing (CMP) procedure. We present transport measurements of JJs at 4.2 K that yield critical-current densities in the range from 50 to 10^4 A/cm^2. Our JJ process yields excellent quality parameters, Rsg/Rn up to ~50 and Vgap up to 2.81 mV, and also allows the fabrication of high-quality sub-\mu m wide long JJs (LJJs) for the study of Josephson vortex behavior. The developed technique can also be used for similar multilayer processes and is very promising for fabricating sub-\mu m JJs for quantum devices such as SQUIDs, qubits and SIS mixers.

We present non-conventional electron spin resonance (ESR) experiments using microfabricated superconducting waveguides. We show that a very broad frequency range, from 0.5 to 40 GHz, becomes accessible with a high frequency accuracy of less than 1 MHz at low temperatures down to 1.6 K and in fields up to 1.4 T. This allows an accurate inspection of the ESR absorption position in the frequency domain, in contrast to the more common observation in the field domain. We demonstrate the applicability of frequency-swept ESR on Cr3+ atoms in ruby as well as on organic radicals of the Nitronyl-nitroxide family (using the 2-(4'-methoxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetra-methylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide, a.k.a. NitPhOMe). Measurements between 1.6 and 30 K reveal a small frequency shift of the ESR and a resonance broadening below the critical temperature, which we both attribute to a modification of the magnetic field configuration due to the appearance of shielding currents.

We propose a tunable macroscopic quantum system based on two fractional vortices. Our analysis shows that two coupled fractional vortices pinned at two artificially created \kappa\ discontinuities of the Josephson phase in a long Josephson junction can reach the quantum regime where coherent quantum oscillations arise. For this purpose we map the dynamics of this system to that of a single particle in a double-well potential. By tuning the \kappa\ discontinuities with injector currents we are able to control the parameters of the effective double-well potential as well as to prepare a desired state of the fractional vortex molecule. The values of the parameters derived from this model suggest that an experimental realisation of this tunable macroscopic quantum system is possible with today's technology., Comment: We updated our manuscript due to a change of the focus from qubit to macroscopic quantum effects

We consider a 0-$\pi$ Josephson junction consisting of asymmetric 0 and $\pi$ regions of different lengths $L_0$ and $L_\pi$ having different critical current densities $j_{c,0}$ and $j_{c,\pi}$. If both segments are rather short, the whole junction can be described by an \emph{effective} current-phase relation for the spatially averaged phase $\psi$, which includes the usual term $\propto\sin(\psi)$, a \emph{negative} second harmonic term $\propto\sin(2\psi)$ as well as the unusual term $\propto H \cos\psi$ tunable by magnetic field $H$. Thus one obtains an electronically tunable current-phase relation. At H=0 this corresponds to the $\varphi$ Josephson junction., Comment: extension of already published theory to the case of unequal critical current densities

We study the critical current I_c dependence on applied magnetic field H for multifacet YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-\delta}-Au-Nb ramp-type zigzag Josephson junctions. For many experiments one would like to apply a homogeneous field in the junction plane. However, even tiny misalignments can cause drastic deviations from homogeneity. We show this explicitly by measuring and analyzing I_c vs. H for an 8 facet junction, forming an array of 4\times(0-\pi)-segments. The ramp angle is \theta_r=8^\circ. The facet width is 10\,\mum. H is applied under different angles \theta relative to the substrate plane and different angles \phi relative to the in-plane orientation of the zigzags. We find that a homogeneous flux distribution is only achieved for an angle \theta_h\approx 1^\circ - 2^\circ and that even a small misalignment \sim 0.1^\circ relative to \theta_h can cause a substantial inhomogeneity of the flux density inside the junction, drastically altering its I_c vs. H interference pattern. We also show, that there is a dead angle \theta^*_d relative to \theta_h of similar magnitude, where the average flux density completely vanishes., Comment: in press (PRB), 11 pages, 9 figures

We demonstrate experimentally the existence of Josephson junctions having a doubly degenerate ground state with an average Josephson phase \psi=\pm{\phi}. The value of {\phi} can be chosen by design in the interval 0<{\phi}<\pi. The junctions used in our experiments are fabricated as 0-{\pi} Josephson junctions of moderate normalized length with asymmetric 0 and {\pi} regions. We show that (a) these {\phi} Josephson junctions have two critical currents, corresponding to the escape of the phase {\psi} from -{\phi} and +{\phi} states; (b) the phase {\psi} can be set to a particular state by tuning an external magnetic field or (c) by using a proper bias current sweep sequence. The experimental observations are in agreement with previous theoretical predictions.

We have investigated asymmetrically shunted Nb/Al-AlO$_x$/Nb direct current (dc) superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs). While keeping the total resistance $R$ identical to a comparable symmetric SQUID with $R^{-1} = R_1^{-1} + R_2^{-1}$, we shunted only one of the two Josephson junctions with $R = R_{1,2}/2$. Simulations predict that the optimum energy resolution $\epsilon$ and thus also the noise performance of such an asymmetric SQUID can be 3--4 times better than that of its symmetric counterpart. Experiments at a temperature of 4.2\,K yielded $\epsilon \approx 32\,\hbar$ for an asymmetric SQUID with an inductance of $22\,\rm{pH}$. For a comparable symmetric device $\epsilon = 110\,\hbar$ was achieved, confirming our simulation results., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We have studied experimentally and numerically temperature profiles and the formation of hot spots in intrinsic Josephson junction stacks in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (BSCCO). The superconducting stacks are biased in a state where all junctions are resistive. The formation of hot spots in this system is shown to arise mainly from the strongly negative temperature coefficient of the c-axis resistivity of BSCCO at low temperatures. This leads to situations where the maximum temperature in the hot spot can be below or above the superconducting transition temperature Tc. The numerical simulations are in good agreement with the experimental observations.

We experimentally investigate the magnetic field $B$ dependence of the critical current I_c and the transition temperature T_c, i.e. the I_c(B)-T_c(B) phase boundary, of superconducting niobium thin films patterned with periodic and quasiperiodic antidot arrays on the submicron scale. For this purpose we monitor current-voltage characteristics at different values of B and T. We investigate samples with antidots positioned at the vertices of two different tilings with quasiperiodic symmetry, namely the Shield Tiling and the Tuebingen Triangle Tiling. For reference we investigate a sample with a triangular antidot lattice. We find modulations of the phase boundary for both quasiperiodic tilings, which were predicted by numerical simulations but not observed in experiments yet. The particularity of these commensurability effects is that they correspond to excess flux densities, which are slightly higher than the matching flux. The observed matching effects can be explained by quasiperiodic caging of interstitial vortices and/or the formation of symmetry induced giant vortices.

We report on measurements of the linewidth {\Delta}f of THz radiation emitted from intrinsic Josephson junction stacks, using a Nb/AlN/NbN integrated receiver for detection. Previous resolution limited measurements indicated that {\Delta}f may be below 1 GHz - much smaller than expected from a purely cavity-induced synchronization. While at low bias we found {\Delta}f to be not smaller than ? 500 MHz, at high bias, where a hotspot coexists with regions which are still superconducting, {\Delta}f turned out to be as narrow as 23 MHz. We attribute this to the hotspot acting as a synchronizing element. {\Delta}f decreases with increasing bath temperature, a behavior reminiscent of motional narrowing in NMR or ESR, but hard to explain in standard electrodynamic models of Josephson junctions., Comment: 4 figures, 5 pages

We investigate the nucleation of superconductivity in a superconducting Al strip under the influence of the magnetic field generated by a current-carrying Nb wire, perpendicularly oriented and located underneath the strip. The inhomogeneous magnetic field, induced by the Nb wire, produces a spatial modulation of the critical temperature T_c, leading to a controllable localization of the superconducting order parameter (OP) wave function. We demonstrate that close to the phase boundary T_c(B_ext) the localized OP solution can be displaced reversibly by either applying an external perpendicular magnetic field B_ext or by changing the amplitude of the inhomogeneous field., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures

Even after 25 years of research the pairing mechanism and - at least for electron doped compounds - also the order parameter symmetry of the high transition temperature (high-Tc) cuprate superconductors is still under debate. One of the reasons is the complex crystal structure of most of these materials. An exception are the infinite layer (IL) compounds consisting essentially of CuO2 planes. Unfortunately, these materials are difficult to grow and, thus, there are only few experimental investigations. Recently, we succeeded in depositing high quality films of the electron doped IL compound Sr1-xLaxCuO2 (SLCO), with x approximately 0.15, and on the fabrication of well-defined grain boundary Josephson junctions (GBJs) based on such SLCO films. Here we report on a phase sensitive study of the superconducting order parameter based on GBJ SQUIDs from a SLCO film grown on a tetracrystal substrate. Our results show that also the parent structure of the high-Tc cuprates has dx2-y2-wave symmetry, which thus seems to be inherent to cuprate superconductivity., Comment: Submitted to PRL, 5 pages, 3 figures, supplementary information included (4 pages, 4 figures)

The resistance $R$ vs perpendicular external magnetic field $H$ was measured for superconducting Nb thin--film microbridges with and without microholes [antidots (ADs)]. Well below the transition temperature, integral $R(H)$ measurements of the resistive transition to the normal state on the plain bridge show two distinct regions, which can be identified as bulk and edge superconductivity, respectively. The latter case appears when bulk superconductivity becomes suppressed at the upper critical field $H_{c2}$ and below the critical field of edge superconductivity $H_{c3}\approx 1.7\, H_{c2}$. The presence of additional edges in the AD bridge leads to a different shape of the $R(H)$ curves. We used low-temperature scanning laser microscopy (LTSLM) to visualize the current distribution in the plain and AD bridge upon sweeping $H$. While the plain bridge shows a dominant LTSLM signal at its edges for $H > H_{c2}$ the AD bridge also gives a signal from the inner parts of the bridge due to the additional edge states around the ADs. LTSLM reveals an asymmetry in the current distribution between left and right edges, which confirms theoretical predictions. Furthermore, the experimental results are in good agreement with our numerical simulations (based on the time-dependent Ginzburg--Landau model) yielding the spatial distribution of the order parameter and current density for different bias currents and $H$ values., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures

We experimentally investigate the vortex induced energy losses in niobium coplanar waveguide resonators with and without quasihexagonal arrays of nanoholes (antidots), where large-area antidot patterns have been fabricated using self-assembling microsphere lithography. We perform transmission spectroscopy experiments around 6.25 and 12.5 GHz in magnetic field cooling and zero field cooling procedures with perpendicular magnetic fields up to B=27 mT at a temperature T=4.2 K. We find that the introduction of antidot arrays into resonators reduces vortex induced losses by more than one order of magnitude.

In long Josephson junctions with multiple discontinuities of the Josephson phase, fractional vortex molecules are spontaneously formed. At each discontinuity point a fractional Josephson vortex carrying a magnetic flux $|\Phi|<\Phi_0$, $\Phi_0\approx 2.07\times 10^{-15}$ Wb being the magnetic flux quantum, is pinned. Each vortex has an oscillatory eigenmode with a frequency that depends on $\Phi/\Phi_0$ and lies inside the plasma gap. We experimentally investigate the dependence of the eigenfrequencies of a two-vortex molecule on the distance between the vortices, on their topological charge $\wp=2\pi\Phi/\Phi_0$ and on the bias current $\gamma$ applied to the Josephson junction. We find that with decreasing distance between vortices, a splitting of the eigenfrequencies occurs, that corresponds to the emergence of collective oscillatory modes of both vortices.
