The $4f$-electron system YbAl$_3$C$_3$ with a non-magnetic spin-dimer ground state has been studied by neutron diffraction in an applied magnetic field. A long-range magnetic order involving both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic components has been revealed above the critical field H$_C\sim $ 6T at temperature T=0.05K. The magnetic structure indicates that the geometrical frustration of the prototype hexagonal lattice is not fully relieved in the low-temperature orthorhombic phase. The suppression of magnetic ordering by the remanent frustration is the key factor stabilizing the non-magnetic singlet ground state in zero field. Temperature dependent measurements in the applied field H=12T revealed that the long-range ordering persists up to temperatures significantly higher than the spin gap indicating that this phase is not directly related to the singlet-triplet excitation. Combining our neutron diffraction results with the previously published phase diagram, we support the existence of an intermediate disordered phase as the first excitation from the non-magnetic singlet ground state. Based on our results, we propose YbAl$_3$C$_3$ as a new material for studying the quantum phase transitions of heavy-fermion metals under the influence of geometrical frustration.

We report the electronic structure of a prototypical valence fluctuation system, YbAl2, using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The observed band dispersions and Fermi surfaces are well described in terms of band structure calculations based on local density approximation. Strong hybridization between the conduction and 4f bands is identified on the basis of the periodic Anderson model. The evaluated small mass enhancement factor and the high Kondo temperature qualitatively agree with those obtained from thermodynamic measurements. Such findings suggest that the strong hybridization suppresses band renormalization and is responsible for the valence fluctuations in YbAl2.

We use hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy (HAXPES) to investigate the electronic structure of YbAl2, for which the Yb valence has not been consistently reported to date. The bulk sensitivity and the analytical simplicity provided by the Yb 3d core-level HAXPES allow a reliable determination of the mean valence of Yb ions. For YbAl2, it is evaluated to be +2.20, which remains nearly unchanged below 300 K. The Kondo resonance peak with an extremely high Kondo temperature (above 2000 K) is clearly identified in the valence-band spectra. The results indicate that a coherent Kondo state can be robust even in a nearly divalent system.

We have demonstrated that ferroelectric polarization in a spin-driven multiferroic CuFe1-xGaxO2 with x = 0.035 can be controlled by the application of uniaxial pressure. Our neutron diffraction and in-situ ferroelectric polarization measurements have revealed that the pressure dependence of the ferroelectric polarization is explained by repopulation of three types of magnetic domains originating from the trigonal symmetry of the crystal. We conclude that the spin-driven anisotropic lattice distortion and the fixed relationship between the directions of the magnetic modulation wave vector and the ferroelectric polarization are the keys to this spin-mediated piezoelectric effect., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

A Pb-salt tunable diode laser (TDL) has found many applications in the field of atmospheric gas analysis. Its continuous tunablility and fine spectral purity in the mid infrared region are outstanding from other lasers. The only shortcoming is that it requires cryogenic operating temperatures, though, it is improved year by year towards the room temperature operation. A repeated pulse operation of Pb salt diode lasers is possible with a thermoelectric cooling device, which allows an instrument a portable geometry disusing a heavy, bulky and power consuming mechanical refrigerator. A derivative spectrometry was exploiting the quick tunability of Pb salt diode lasers, though they are continuous wave (cw) operated with refrigerator or liquid nitrogen so far. A new system for derivative spectrometry with a pulsed diode laser will extend its field of applications because of reduced weights and size of measuring instruments. A preliminary results is shown that demonstrates the feasibility of an attempt to implement the derivative spectrmetry with repeatedly pulse driven diode lasers. Atmospheric methane was measured with 8 ppm/m sensitivity. Further results of parametric optimization for the best signal to noise ratios under any given device characteristics as well as for available real devices is given.
