The article focuses on the licensing regulation in Canada. Spending on research and development (R&D) centers on telecommunications, biotechnology, transport and resource development. Statistics Canada estimated that R&D spending in manufacturing will exceed 52% of total spending in 2009. Factors such as the estimated size of the potential market may affect decisions on whether to license a technology or make a direct investment. The protection of intellectual property is discussed, as well as the process for property registration.
