The Q $\&$ U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) is a novel kind of polarimeter optimized for the measurement of the B-mode polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), which is one of the major challenges of observational cosmology. The signal is expected to be of the order of a few tens of nK, prone to instrumental systematic effects and polluted by various astrophysical foregrounds which can only be controlled through multichroic observations. QUBIC is designed to address these observational issues with a novel approach that combines the advantages of interferometry in terms of control of instrumental systematic effects with those of bolometric detectors in terms of wide-band, background-limited sensitivity. The QUBIC synthesized beam has a frequency-dependent shape that results in the ability to produce maps of the CMB polarization in multiple sub-bands within the two physical bands of the instrument (150 and 220 GHz). These features make QUBIC complementary to other instruments and makes it particularly well suited to characterize and remove Galactic foreground contamination. In this article, first of a series of eight, we give an overview of the QUBIC instrument design, the main results of the calibration campaign, and present the scientific program of QUBIC including not only the measurement of primordial B-modes, but also the measurement of Galactic foregrounds. We give forecasts for typical observations and measurements: with three years of integration on the sky and assuming perfect foreground removal as well as stable atmospheric conditions from our site in Argentina, our simulations show that we can achieve a statistical sensitivity to the effective tensor-to-scalar ratio (including primordial and foreground B-modes) $\sigma(r)=0.015$., Comment: 34 pages, 16 figures, accepted for publication by JCAP. (Abridged) It is well known that the tidal deformability of a compact star carries important information about the interior equation-of-state (EOS) of the star. The first gravitational-wave event GW170817 from a binary compact star merger observed by the LIGO/VIRGO detectors have already put limits on the tidal deformability and provided constraints on the ultra-high nuclear density EOS. In view of this ground breaking discovery, we revisit and extend our previous work [Phys. Rev. D 95, 101302(R) (2017)] which found that taking the effect of elasticity into account in the calculation of the tidal deformability of compact star models composed of crystalline color-superconducting (CCS) quark matter can break the universal I-Love relation discovered for fluid compact stars. In this paper, we present our formulation in detail and provide more analysis to complement our previous findings. We focus and extend the study of the screening effect on the tidal deformability, which we found previously for hybrid star models, to various theoretical two-layer compact star models. We show that the screening effect of these two-layer models in general depends on the thickness of the envelope and the ratio between the density gap and the core density at the core-envelope interface. However, for models with a fluid envelope and a vanishing small density gap, the screening effect remains strong even as the thickness of the envelops tends to zero if the quark matter core has a fairly uniform density. The relevance of our study to GW170817 is also discussed. We study the tidal deformability of bare quark stars and hybrid compact stars composed of a quark matter core in general relativity, assuming that the deconfined quark matter exists in a crystalline color superconducting phase. We find that taking the elastic property of crystalline quark matter into account in the calculation of the tidal deformability can break the universal I-Love relation discovered for fluid compact stars, which connects the moment of inertia and tidal deformability. Our result suggests that measurements of the moment of inertia and tidal deformability can in principle be used to test the existence of solid quark stars, despite our ignorance of the high density equation of state (EOS). Assuming that the moment of inertia can be measured to 10% level, one can then distinguish a 1.4 (1) $M_\odot$ solid quark star described by our quark matter EOS model with a gap parameter $\Delta=25$ MeV from a fluid compact star if the tidal deformability can be measured to about 10% (45%) level. On the other hand, we find that the nuclear matter fluid envelope of a hybrid star can screen out the effect of the solid core significantly so that the resulting I-Love relation for hybrid stars still agrees with the universal relation for fluid stars to about 1% level., Comment: 6 pages; accepted for publication in PRD (Rapid Communication)

We report the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, in TlNi$_2$Se$_{2-x}$S$_x$ detected via the AC susceptibility method. The pressure-temperature phase diagram constructed for TlNi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$, TlNi$_{2}$S$_{2}$ and TlNi$_{2}$SeS exhibits two unexpected features: (a) a sudden collapse of the superconducting state at moderate pressure for all three compositions and (b) a dome-shaped pressure dependence of $T_c$ for TlNi$_{2}$SeS. These results point to the nontrivial role of S substitution and its subtle interplay with applied pressure, as well as novel superconducting properties of the TlNi$_2$Se$_{2-x}$S$_x$ system., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

For a two-surface B tending to an infinite--radius round sphere at spatial infinity, we consider the Brown--York boundary integral H_B belonging to the energy sector of the gravitational Hamiltonian. Assuming that the lapse function behaves as N \sim 1 in the limit, we find agreement between H_B and the total Arnowitt--Deser--Misner energy, an agreement first noted by Braden, Brown, Whiting, and York. However, we argue that the Arnowitt--Deser--Misner mass--aspect differs from a gauge invariant mass--aspect by a pure divergence on the unit sphere. We also examine the boundary integral H_B corresponding to the Hamiltonian generator of an asymptotic boost, in which case the lapse N \sim x^k grows like one of the asymptotically Cartesian coordinate functions. Such an integral defines the kth component of the center of mass for a Cauchy surface \Sigma bounded by B. In the large--radius limit, we find agreement between H_B and an integral introduced by Beig and O'Murchadha. Although both H_B and the Beig--O'Murchadha integral are naively divergent, they are in fact finite modulo the Hamiltonian constraint. Furthermore, we examine the relationship between H_B and a certain two--surface integral linear in the spacetime Riemann curvature tensor. Similar integrals featuring the curvature appear in works by Ashtekar and Hansen, Penrose, Goldberg, and Hayward. We present a detailed examination of the variational principle for metric general relativity as applied to a ``quasilocal'' spacetime region $\M$ (that is, a region that is both spatially and temporally bounded). Our analysis relies on the Hamiltonian formulation of general relativity, and thereby assumes a foliation of $\M$ into spacelike hypersurfaces $\Sigma$. We allow for near complete generality in the choice of foliation. Using a field--theoretic generalization of Hamilton--Jacobi theory, we define the quasilocal stress-energy-momentum of the gravitational field by varying the action with respect to the metric on the boundary $\partial\M$. The gravitational stress-energy-momentum is defined for a two--surface $B$ spanned by a spacelike hypersurface in spacetime. We examine the behavior of the gravitational stress-energy-momentum under boosts of the spanning hypersurface. The boost relations are derived from the geometrical and invariance properties of the gravitational action and Hamiltonian. Finally, we present several new examples of quasilocal energy--momentum, including a novel discussion of quasilocal energy--momentum in the large-sphere limit towards spatial infinity., Comment: To be published in Annals of Physics. We give an explicit expression for gravitational energy, written solely in terms of physical spacetime geometry, which in suitable limits agrees with the total Arnowitt-Deser-Misner and Trautman-Bondi-Sachs energies for asymptotically flat spacetimes and with the Abbot-Deser energy for asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. Our expression is a boundary value of the standard gravitational Hamiltonian. Consider the definition E of quasilocal energy stemming from the Hamilton-Jacobi method as applied to the canonical form of the gravitational action. We examine E in the standard "small-sphere limit," first considered by Horowitz and Schmidt in their examination of Hawking's quasilocal mass. By the term "small sphere" we mean a cut S(r), level in an affine radius r, of the lightcone belonging to a generic spacetime point. As a power series in r, we compute the energy E of the gravitational and matter fields on a spacelike hypersurface spanning S(r). Much of our analysis concerns conceptual and technical issues associated with assigning the zero-point of the energy. For the small-sphere limit, we argue that the correct zero-point is obtained via a "lightcone reference," which stems from a certain isometric embedding of S(r) into a genuine lightcone of Minkowski spacetime. Choosing this zero-point, we find agreement with Hawking's quasilocal mass expression, up to and including the first non-trivial order in the affine radius. Within a first-order framework, we comprehensively examine the role played by boundary conditions in the canonical formulation of a completely general two-dimensional gravity model. Our analysis particularly elucidates the perennial themes of mass and energy. The gravity models for which our arguments are valid include theories with dynamical torsion and so-called generalized dilaton theories (GDTs). Our analysis of the canonical action principle (i) provides a rigorous correspondence between the most general first-order two-dimensional Einstein-Cartan model (ECM) and GDT and (ii) allows us to extract in a virtually simultaneous manner the ``true degrees of freedom'' for both ECMs and GDTs. For all such models, the existence of an absolutely conserved (in vacuo) quantity C is a generic feature, with (minus) C corresponding to the black-hole mass parameter in the important special cases of spherically symmetric four-dimensional general relativity and standard two-dimensional dilaton gravity. The mass C also includes (minimally coupled) matter into a ``universal mass function.'' We define the energy of a perfectly isolated system at a given retarded time as the suitable null limit of the quasilocal energy $E$. The result coincides with the Bondi-Sachs mass. Our $E$ is the lapse-unity shift-zero boundary value of the gravitational Hamiltonian appropriate for the partial system $\Sigma$ contained within a finite topologically spherical boundary $B = \partial \Sigma$. Moreover, we show that with an arbitrary lapse and zero shift the same null limit of the Hamiltonian defines a physically meaningful element in the space dual to supertranslations. Mediation by self-monitoring of the relationship between perceived approval from others and delinquent behavior was studied for 828 Hong Kong students in grades 7 through 9. Analyses indicate that self-monitoring is an interacting factor and that the relationship is more apparent for high self-monitors. (SLD)

Prior to the discovery of nanotubes, no other material known to mankind possessed such a unique combination of extraordinary properties. However, most of the past research work has primarily explored the science involved in the measurement of the properties of nanotubes while leaving the issue of utilizing these properties in real engineering applications unaddressed for the most part. Therefore, this work attempts to bridge the gap between the science that has been developed so far on nanotube technology and their practical implementations in textile engineering applications. From the experimental results conducted so far, it has been shown that the addition of CNTs in the polymer could lead to a significant enhancemtn in e-textiles. On the other hand, the increasing trend in automation and use of closed-loop control in many systems has tremendously boosted the need for better and improved sensors for providing reliable and accurate feedback information. This annual report briefly covers our previous reports and discusses the major work performed recently on fabricating e-textiles. It also covers our future plans for designing and developing a manipulation and characterization framework for nanofibrous materials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
