In this work, we investigate the influence of interlayer distance in a heterostructure containing both Kondo effects and short-range magnetic correlations. Our proposed heterostructure comprises three coupled square lattice layers. The first layer is governed by the Kondo-Heisenberg lattice model involving $f$- and $d$-electrons, which interact via Kondo and Heisenberg couplings, $J_{K}$ and $J_{H}$, respectively. The other two layers consist of non-interacting itinerant electrons, where coupling with the first layer is determined by two perpendicular hopping parameters. We find that varying the interlayer couplings induces electronic dynamics at the interface, altering the behavior of mean-field parameters describing the Kondo effect and short-range magnetic correlations. The system's temperature - interlayer hopping parameter phase diagram exhibits a sequence of discontinuous and continuous transitions. In the cases, $|J_{K}|<|J_{H}|$ and $|J_{K}|>|J_{H}|$ rich phase diagrams are found which include Kondo, ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations. Artificial intelligence (AI) has driven many information and communication technology (ICT) breakthroughs. Nonetheless, the scope of ICT systems has expanded far beyond AI since the Turing test proposal. Critically, recent AI regulation proposals adopt AI definitions affecting ICT techniques, approaches, and systems that are not AI. In some cases, even works from mathematics, statistics, and engineering would be affected. Worryingly, AI misdefinitions are observed from Western societies to the Global South. In this paper, we propose a framework to score how validated as appropriately-defined for regulation (VADER) an AI definition is. Our online, publicly-available VADER framework scores the coverage of premises that should underlie AI definitions for regulation, which aim to (i) reproduce principles observed in other successful technology regulations, and (ii) include all AI techniques and approaches while excluding non-AI works. Regarding the latter, our score is based on a dataset of representative AI, non-AI ICT, and non-ICT examples. We demonstrate our contribution by reviewing the AI regulation proposals of key players, namely the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Brazil. Importantly, none of the proposals assessed achieve the appropriateness score, ranging from a revision need to a concrete risk to ICT systems and works from other fields.

We use Kostant and Kumar's twisted group ring and its dual to formulate and prove a generalization of Nakada's colored hook formula for any Coxeter groups. For dominant minuscule elements of the Weyl group of a Kac--Moody algebra, this provides another short proof of Nakada's colored hook formula., Comment: 12 pages

We prove a Chevalley formula to multiply the motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in a generalized flag manifold $G/P$ by the class of any line bundle $\mathcal{L}_\lambda$. Our formula is given in terms of the $\lambda$-chains of Lenart and Postnikov. Its proof relies on a change of basis formula in the affine Hecke algebra due to Ram, and on the Hecke algebra action on torus-equivariant K-theory of the complete flag manifold $G/B$ via left Demazure--Lusztig operators. We revisit some wall-crossing formulae for the stable envelopes in $T^*(G/B)$. We use our Chevalley formula, and the equivalence between motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells and K-theoretic stable envelopes in $T^*(G/B)$, to give formulae for the change of polarization, and for the change of slope for stable envelopes. We prove several additional applications, including Serre, star, and Dynkin, dualities of the Chevalley coefficients, new formulae for the Whittaker functions, and for the Hall--Littlewood polynomials. In a recent paper, we stated conjectural presentations for the equivariant quantum K ring of partial flag varieties, motivated by physics considerations. In this companion paper, we analyze these presentations mathematically. We prove that if the conjectured relations hold, then they must form a complete set of relations. Our main result is a proof of the conjectured presentation in the case of the incidence varieties. Let $G/P$ be a complex cominuscule flag manifold of type $E_6,E_7$. We prove that each characteristic cycle of the intersection homology (IH) complex of a Schubert variety in $G/P$ is irreducible. The proof utilizes an earlier algorithm by the same authors which calculates local Euler obstructions, then proceeds by direct computer calculation using Sage. This completes to the exceptional Lie types the characterization of irreducibility of IH sheaves of Schubert varieties in cominuscule $G/P$ obtained by Boe and Fu. As a by-product, we also obtain that the Mather classes, and the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells in cominuscule $G/P$ of type $E_6,E_7$, are strongly positive., Comment: 14 pages, comments welcome!

Mammography images are widely used to detect non-palpable breast lesions or nodules, preventing cancer and providing the opportunity to plan interventions when necessary. The identification of some structures of interest is essential to make a diagnosis and evaluate image adequacy. Thus, computer-aided detection systems can be helpful in assisting medical interpretation by automatically segmenting these landmark structures. In this paper, we propose a deep learning-based framework for the segmentation of the nipple, the pectoral muscle, the fibroglandular tissue, and the fatty tissue on standard-view mammography images. We introduce a large private segmentation dataset and extensive experiments considering different deep-learning model architectures. Our experiments demonstrate accurate segmentation performance on variate and challenging cases, showing that this framework can be integrated into clinical practice., Comment: 6 pages

The equivariant motivic Chern class of a Schubert cell in a `complete' flag manifold $X=G/B$ is an element in the equivariant K theory ring of $X$ to which one adjoins a formal parameter $y$. In this paper we prove several `folklore results' about the motivic Chern classes, including finding specializations at $y=-1$ and $y=0$; the coefficient of the top power of $y$; how to obtain Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) classes as leading terms of motivic classes; divisibility properties of the Schubert expansion of motivic Chern classes. We collect several conjectures about the positivity, unimodality, and log concavity of CSM and motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells, including a conjectural positivity of structure constants of the multiplication of Poincar\'e duals of CSM classes. In addition, we prove a `star duality' for the motivic Chern classes. We utilize the motivic Chern transformation to define two equivariant variants of the Hirzebruch transformation, which appear naturally in the Grothendieck-Hirzebruch-Riemann-Roch formalism. We utilize the Demazure-Lusztig recursions from the motivic Chern class theory to find similar recursions giving the Hirzebruch classes of Schubert cells, their Poincar{\'e} duals, and their Segre versions. The ${\bf E}\times{\bf B}$ drift motion of particles in tokamaks provides valuable information on the turbulence-driven anomalous transport. One of the characteristic features of the drift motion dynamics is the presence of chaotic orbits for which the guiding center can experience large-scale drifts. If one or more exits are placed within that chaotic orbit, the corresponding escape basins structure is complicated and, indeed, exhibits fractal structures. We investigate those structures through a number of numerical diagnostics, tailored to quantify the final-state uncertainty related to the fractal escape basins. We estimate the escape basin boundary dimension through the uncertainty exponent method, and quantify final-state uncertainty by the basin entropy and the basin boundary entropy. Finally, we describe the so-called Wada property, for the case of three or more escape basins. We prove a `Whitney' presentation, and a `Coulomb branch' presentation, for the torus equivariant quantum K theory of the Grassmann manifold $\mathrm{Gr}(k;n)$, inspired from physics, and stated in an earlier paper. The first presentation is obtained by quantum deforming the product of the Hirzebruch $\lambda_y$ classes of the tautological bundles. In physics, the $\lambda_y$ classes arise as certain Wilson line operators. The second presentation is obtained from the Coulomb branch equations involving the partial derivatives of a twisted superpotential from supersymmetric gauge theory. This is closest to a presentation obtained by Gorbounov and Korff, utilizing integrable systems techniques. Algebraically, we relate the Coulomb and Whitney presentations utilizing transition matrices from the (equivariant) Grothendieck polynomials to the (equivariant) complete homogeneous symmetric polynomials. Due to its ultra-thin nature, the study of graphene quantum optoelectronics, like gate-dependent graphene Raman properties, is obscured by interactions with substrates and surroundings. For instance, the use of doped silicon with a capping thermal oxide layer limited the observation to low temperatures of a well-defined Kohn-anomaly behavior, related to the breakdown of the adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer approximation. Here, we design an optoelectronic device consisting of single-layer graphene electrically contacted with thin graphite leads, seated on an atomically flat hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate and gated with an ultra-thin gold (Au) layer. We show that this device is optically transparent, has no background optical peaks and photoluminescence from the device components, and no generation of laser-induced electrostatic doping (photodoping). This allows for room-temperature gate-dependent Raman spectroscopy effects that have only been observed at cryogenic temperatures so far, above all the Kohn-anomaly phonon energy normalization. The new device architecture by decoupling graphene optoelectronic properties from the substrate effects, allows for the observation of quantum phenomena at room temperature.

We prove that the Schubert structure constants of the quantum $K$-theory ring of any minuscule flag variety or quadric hypersurface have signs that alternate with codimension. We also prove that the powers of the deformation parameter $q$ that occur in the product of two Schubert classes in the quantum cohomology or quantum $K$-theory ring of a cominuscule flag variety form an integer interval. Our proofs are based on several new results, including an explicit description of the most general non-empty intersection of two Schubert varieties in an arbitrary flag manifold, and a computation of the cohomology groups of any negative line bundle restricted to a Richardson variety in a cominuscule flag variety. We also give a type-uniform proof of the quantum-to-classical theorem, which asserts that the (3-point, genus 0) Gromov-Witten invariants of any cominuscule flag variety are classical triple-intersection numbers on an associated flag variety. Finally, we prove several new results about the geometry and combinatorics related to this theorem.

Nakada's colored hook formula is a vast generalization of many important formulae in combinatorics, such as the classical hook length formula and the Peterson's formula for the number of reduced expressions of minuscule Weyl group elements. In this paper, we utilize cohomological properties of Segre-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells and varieties to prove a generalization of a cohomological version of Nakada's formula, in terms of smoothness properties of Schubert varieties. A key ingredient in the proof is the study of a decorated version of the Bruhat graph. Summing over weighted paths of this graph give the terms in the generalized Nakada's formula, and also provide algorithms to calculate structure constants of multiplications of Segre-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells. For simply laced Weyl groups, we also show the equality of `skew' and `straight' Nakada's formulae. This article describes the setup and performance of the near and far detectors in the Double Chooz experiment. The electron antineutrinos of the Chooz nuclear power plant were measured in two identically designed detectors with different average baselines of about 400 m and 1050 m from the two reactor cores. Over many years of data taking the neutrino signals were extracted from interactions in the detectors with the goal of measuring a fundamental parameter in the context of neutrino oscillation, the mixing angle {\theta}13. The central part of the Double Chooz detectors was a main detector comprising four cylindrical volumes filled with organic liquids. From the inside towards the outside there were volumes containing gadolinium-loaded scintillator, gadolinium-free scintillator, a buffer oil and, optically separated, another liquid scintillator acting as veto system. Above this main detector an additional outer veto system using plastic scintillator strips was installed. The technologies developed in Double Chooz were inspiration for several other antineutrino detectors in the field. The detector design allowed implementation of efficient background rejection techniques including use of pulse shape information provided by the data acquisition system. In this work, we study the Raman spectra of twisted bilayer graphene samples as a function of their twist-angles ($\theta$), ranging from 0.03$^\circ$ to 3.40$^\circ$, where local $\theta$ are determined by analysis of their associated moire superlattices, as imaged by scanning microwave impedance microscopy. Three standard excitation laser lines are used (457, 532, and 633 nm wavelengths), and the main Raman active graphene bands (G and 2D) are considered. Our results reveal that electron-phonon interaction influences the G band's linewidth close to the magic angle regardless of laser excitation wavelength. Also, the 2D band lineshape in the $\theta$ < 1$^\circ$ regime is dictated by crystal lattice and depends on both the Bernal (AB and BA) stacking bilayer graphene and strain soliton regions (SP). We propose a geometrical model to explain the 2D lineshape variations, and from it, we estimate the SP width when moving towards the magic angle.

With the logistic challenges faced by most countries for the production, distribution, and application of vaccines for the novel coronavirus disease~(COVID-19), social distancing~(SD) remains the most tangible approach to mitigate the spread of the virus. To assist SD monitoring, several tech companies have made publicly available anonymized mobility data. In this work, we conduct a multi-objective mobility reduction rate comparison between the first and second COVID-19 waves in several localities from America and Europe using Google community mobility reports~(CMR) data. Through multi-dimensional visualization, we are able to compare in a Pareto-compliant way the reduction in mobility from the different lockdown periods for each locality selected, simultaneously considering all place categories provided in CMR. In addition, our analysis comprises a 56-day lockdown period for each locality and COVID-19 wave, which we analyze both as 56-day periods and as 14-day consecutive windows. Results vary considerably as a function of the locality considered, particularly when the temporal evolution of the mobility reduction is considered. We thus discuss each locality individually, relating social distancing measures and the reduction observed.

Social distancing (SD) has been critical in the fight against the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19). To aid SD monitoring, many technology companies have made available mobility data, the most prominent example being the community mobility reports (CMR) provided by Google. Given the wide range of research fields that have been drawing insights from CMR data, there has been a rising concern for methodological discussion on how to use them. Indeed, Google recently released their own guidelines, concerning the nature of the place categories and the need for calibrating regional values. In this work, we discuss how measures developed in the field of multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) might benefit researchers analyzing this data. Concretely, we discuss how Pareto dominance and performance measures adopted in MCDM enable the mobility evaluation for (i) multiple categories for a given time period and (ii) multiple categories over multiple time periods. We empirically demonstrate these approaches conducting both a region- and country-level analysis, comparing some of the most relevant outbreak examples from different continents.

We study the Demazure-Lusztig operators induced by the left multiplication on partial flag manifolds $G/P$. We prove that they generate the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson classes of Schubert cells (in equivariant cohomology), respectively their motivic Chern classes (in equivariant K theory), in any partial flag manifold. Along the way we advertise many properties of the left and right divided difference operators in cohomology and K theory, and their actions on Schubert classes. Molecular and atomic imaging required the development of electron and scanning probe microscopies to surpass the physical limits dictated by diffraction. Nano-infrared experiments and pico-cavity tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy imaging later demonstrated that radiation in the visible range can surpass this limit by using scanning probe tips to access the near-field regime. Here we show that ultimate resolution can be obtained by using scanning microwave imaging microscopy to reveal structures with feature sizes down to 1~nm using a radiation of 0.1~m in wavelength. As a test material we use twisted bilayer graphene, which is not only a very important recent topic due to the discovery of correlated electron effects such as superconductivity, but also because it provides a sample where we can systematically tune a superstructure Moir\'e patterns modulation from below one up to tens of nanometers. By analyzing the tip-sample distance dynamics, we demonstrate that this ultimate 10$^8$ probe-to-pattern resolution can be achieved by using liquid immersion microscopy concepts and exquisite force control exerted on nanoscale water menisci., Comment: suppl. mat included, movies not included and available upon request by email to gilberto@dcc.ufmg.br

Non-volatile memory devices have been limited to flash architectures that are complex devices. Here, we present a unique photomemory effect in MoS$_2$ transistors. The photomemory is based on a photodoping effect - a controlled way of manipulating the density of free charges in monolayer MoS$_2$ using a combination of laser exposure and gate voltage application. The photodoping promotes changes on the conductance of MoS$_2$ leading to photomemory states with high memory on/off ratio. Such memory states are non-volatile with an expectation of retaining up to 50 % of the information for tens of years. Furthermore, we show that the photodoping is gate-tunable, enabling control of the recorded memory states. Finally, we propose a model to explain the photodoping, and we provide experimental evidence supporting such a phenomenon. In summary, our work includes the MoS$_2$ phototransistors in the non-volatile memory devices and expands the possibilities of memory application beyond conventional memory architectures.

Inducing electrostatic doping in 2D materials by laser exposure (photodoping effect) is an exciting route to tune optoelectronic phenomena. However, there is a lack of investigation concerning in what respect the action of photodoping in optoelectronic devices is local. Here, we employ scanning photocurrent microscopy (SPCM) techniques to investigate how a permanent photodoping modulates the photocurrent generation in MoS2 transistors locally. We claim that the photodoping fills the electronic states in MoS2 conduction band, preventing the photon-absorption and the photocurrent generation by the MoS2 sheet. Moreover, by comparing the persistent photocurrent (PPC) generation of MoS2 on top of different substrates, we elucidate that the interface between the material used for the gate and the insulator (gate-insulator interface) is essential for the photodoping generation. Our work gives a step forward to the understanding of the photodoping effect in MoS2 transistors and the implementation of such an effect in integrated devices.

A low twist angle between the two stacked crystal networks in bilayer graphene enables self-organized lattice reconstruction with the formation of a periodic domain. This superlattice modulates the vibrational and electronic structures, imposing new rules for electron-phonon coupling and the eventual observation of strong correlation and superconductivity. Direct optical images of the crystal superlattice in reconstructed twisted bilayer graphene are reported here, generated by the inelastic scattering of light in a nano-Raman spectroscope. The observation of the crystallographic structure with visible light is made possible due to lattice dynamics localization, the images resembling spectral variations caused by the presence of strain solitons and topological points. The results are rationalized by a nearly-free-phonon model and electronic calculations that highlight the relevance of solitons and topological points, particularly pronounced for structures with small twist angles. We anticipate our discovery to play a role in understanding Jahn-Teller effects and electronic Cooper pairing, among many other important phonon-related effects, and it may be useful for characterizing devices in the most prominent platform for the field of twistronics., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

Let $G/P$ be a complex cominuscule flag manifold. We prove a type independent formula for the torus equivariant Mather class of a Schubert variety in $G/P$, and for a Schubert variety pulled back via the natural projection $G/Q \to G/P$. We apply this to find formulae for the local Euler obstructions of Schubert varieties, and for the torus equivariant localizations of the conormal spaces of these Schubert varieties. We conjecture positivity properties for the local Euler obstructions and for the Schubert expansion of Mather classes. We check the conjectures in many cases, by utilizing results of Boe and Fu about the characteristic cycles of the intersection homology sheaves of Schubert varieties. This work presents a detailed experimental investigation of the interaction between molecular hydrogen (H$_2$) and monolayer MoS$_2$ field effect transistors (MoS$_2$ FET), aiming for sensing application. The MoS$_2$ FET exhibits a response to H$_2$ that covers a broad range of concentration (0.1 - 90%) at a relatively low operating temperature range (300-473 K). Most important, H$_2$ sensors based on MoS$_2$ FETs show desirable properties such as full reversibility and absence of catalytic metal dopants (Pt or Pd). The experimental results indicate that the conductivity of MoS$_2$ monotonically increases as a function of the H$_2$ concentration due to a reversible charge transferring process. It is proposed that such process involves dissociative H$_2$ adsorption driven by interaction with sulfur vacancies in the MoS$_2$ surface (VS). This description is in agreement with related density functional theory studies about H$_2$ adsorption on MoS$_2$. Finally, measurements on partially defect-passivated MoS$_2$ FETs using atomic layer deposited aluminum oxide consist of an experimental indication that the VS plays an important role in the H$_2$ interaction with the MoS$_2$. These findings provide insights for futures applications in catalytic process between monolayer MoS$_2$ and H$_2$ and also introduce MoS$_2$ FETs as promising H$_2$ sensors.

We prove a `motivic' analogue of the Weyl character formula, computing the Euler characteristic of a line bundle on a generalized flag manifold $G/B$ multiplied either by a motivic Chern class of a Schubert cell, or a Segre analogue of it. The result, given in terms of Demazure-Lusztig (D-L) operators, recovers formulas found by Brubaker, Bump and Licata for the Iwahori-Whittaker functions of the principal series representation of a $p$-adic group. In particular, we obtain a new proof of the classical Casselman-Shalika formula for the spherical Whittaker function. The proofs are based on localization in equivariant K theory, and require a geometric interpretation of how the Hecke dual (or inverse) of a D-L operator acts on the class of a point. We prove that the Hecke dual operators give Grothendieck-Serre dual classes of the motivic classes, a result which might be of independent interest. In an Appendix joint with Dave Anderson we show that if the line bundle is trivial, we recover a generalization of a classical formula by Kostant, Macdonald, Shapiro and Steinberg for the Poincar{\'e} polynomial of $G/B$; the generalization we consider is due to Aky{\i}ld{\i}z and Carrell and replaces $G/B$ by any smooth Schubert variety., Comment: 17 pages

We prove that the sheaf Euler characteristic of the product of a Schubert class and an opposite Schubert class in the quantum $K$-theory ring of a (generalized) flag variety $G/P$ is equal to $q^d$, where $d$ is the smallest degree of a rational curve joining the two Schubert varieties. This implies that the sum of the structure constants of any product of Schubert classes is equal to 1. Motivic Chern classes are elements in the K-theory of an algebraic variety $X$, depending on an extra parameter $y$. They are determined by functoriality and a normalization property for smooth $X$. In this paper we calculate the motivic Chern classes of Schubert cells in the (equivariant) K-theory of flag manifolds $G/B$. We show that the motivic class of a Schubert cell is determined recursively by the Demazure-Lusztig operators in the Hecke algebra of the Weyl group of $G$, starting from the class of a point. The resulting classes are conjectured to satisfy a positivity property. We use the recursions to give a new proof that they are equivalent to certain K-theoretic stable envelopes recently defined by Okounkov and collaborators, thus recovering results of Feh\'er, Rim\'anyi and Weber. The Hecke algebra action on the K-theory of the Langlands dual flag manifold matches the Hecke action on the Iwahori invariants of the principal series representation associated to an unramified character for a group over a nonarchimedean local field. This gives a correspondence identifying the duals of the motivic Chern classes to the standard basis in the Iwahori invariants, and the fixed point basis to Casselman's basis. Let $X$ be a complex nonsingular variety with globally generated tangent bundle. We prove that the signed Segre-MacPherson (SM) class of a constructible function on $X$ with effective characteristic cycle is effective. This observation has a surprising number of applications to positivity questions in classical situations, unifying previous results in the literature and yielding several new results. We survey a selection of such results in this paper. For example, we prove general effectivity results for SM classes of subvarieties which admit proper (semi-)small resolutions and for regular or affine embeddings. Among these, we mention the effectivity of (signed) Segre-Milnor classes of complete intersections if $X$ is projective and an alternation property for SM classes of Schubert cells in flag manifolds; the latter result proves and generalizes a variant of a conjecture of Feh\'er and Rim\'anyi. Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) classes generalize to singular and/or noncompact varieties the classical total homology Chern class of the tangent bundle of a smooth compact complex manifold. The theory of CSM classes has been extended to the equivariant setting by Ohmoto. We prove that for an arbitrary complex projective manifold $X$, the homogenized, torus equivariant CSM class of a constructible function $\varphi$ is the restriction of the characteristic cycle of $\varphi$ via the zero section of the cotangent bundle of $X$. This extends to the equivariant setting results of Ginzburg and Sabbah. We specialize $X$ to be a (generalized) flag manifold $G/B$. In this case CSM classes are determined by a Demazure-Lusztig (DL) operator. We prove a `Hecke orthogonality' of CSM classes, determined by the DL operator and its Poincar{\'e} adjoint. We further use the theory of holonomic $\mathcal{D}_X$-modules to show that the characteristic cycle of a Verma module, restricted to the zero section, gives the CSM class of the corresponding Schubert cell. Since the Verma characteristic cycles naturally identify with the Maulik and Okounkov's stable envelopes, we establish an equivalence between CSM classes and stable envelopes; this reproves results of Rim{\'a}nyi and Varchenko. As an application, we obtain a Segre type formula for CSM classes. In the non-equivariant case this formula is manifestly positive, showing that the expansion in the Schubert basis of the CSM class of a Schubert cell is effective. This proves a previous conjecture by Aluffi and Mihalcea, and it extends previous positivity results by J. Huh in the Grassmann manifold case. Let $\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+1)$ be the odd-symplectic Grassmannian. Property $\mathcal{O}$, introduced by Galkin, Golyshev and Iritani for arbitrary complex, Fano manifolds $X$, is a statement about the eigenvalues of the linear operator obtained by the quantum multiplication by the anticanonical class of $X$. We prove that property $\mathcal{O}$ holds in the case when $X= \mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+1)$ is an odd-symplectic Grassmannian. The proof uses the combinatorics of the recently found quantum Chevalley formula for $\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+1)$, together with the Perron-Frobenius theory of nonnegative matrices., Comment: 9 pages

The odd symplectic Grassmannian $\mathrm{IG}:=\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+1)$ parametrizes $k$ dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^{2n+1}$ which are isotropic with respect to a general (necessarily degenerate) symplectic form. The odd symplectic group acts on $\mathrm{IG}$ with two orbits, and $\mathrm{IG}$ is itself a smooth Schubert variety in the submaximal isotropic Grassmannian $\mathrm{IG}(k, 2n+2)$. We use the technique of curve neighborhoods to prove a Chevalley formula in the equivariant quantum cohomology of $\mathrm{IG}$, i.e. a formula to multiply a Schubert class by the Schubert divisor class. We state a precise conjectural isomorphism between localizations of the equivariant quantum K-theory ring of a flag variety and the equivariant K-homology ring of the affine Grassmannian, in particular relating their Schubert bases and structure constants. This generalizes Peterson's isomorphism in (co)homology. Light-matter interaction in two-dimension photonic materials allows for confinement and control of free-space radiation on sub-wavelength scales. Most notably, the van der Waals heterostructure obtained by stacking graphene (G) and hexagonal Boron Nitride (hBN) can provide for hybrid hyperbolic plasmon phonon-polaritons (HP3). Here, we present a polariton diode effect and low-bias control of HP3 modes confined in G-hBN. Using broadband infrared synchrotron radiation coupled to a scattering-type near-field optical microscope, we launch HP3 waves over both hBN Reststrahlen bands and observe the unidirectional propagation of HP3 modes at in-plane heterointerfaces associated with the transition between different substrate dielectrics. By electric gating we further control the HP3 hybridization modifying the coupling between the continuum graphene plasmons and the discrete hyperbolic phonon polaritons of hBN as described by an extended Fano model. This is the first demonstration of unidirectional control of polariton propagation, with break in reflection/transmission symmetry for HP3 modes. G-hBN and related hyperbolic metamaterial nanostructures can therefore provide the basis for novel logic devices of on-chip nano-optics communication and computing.

In this work we probe the third-order non-linear optical property of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride and their heterostructure by the use of coherent anti-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy. When the energy difference of the two input fields match the phonon energy, the anti-Stokes emission intensity is enhanced in h-BN, as usually expected while for graphene a anomalous decrease is observed. This behaviour can be understood in terms of q coupling between the electronic continuum and a discrete phonon state. We have also measured a graphene/h-BN heterostructure and demonstrate that the anomalous effect in graphene dominates the heterostructure optical response., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

We report on magneto-transport studies of dual-gated, Bernal-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG) encapsulated in boron nitride crystals. We observe a quantum Hall effect staircase which indicates a complete lifting of the twelve-fold degeneracy of the zeroth Landau level. As a function of perpendicular electric field, our data exhibits a sequence of phase transitions between all integer quantum Hall states in the filling factor interval $-8<\nu<0$. We develop a theoretical model and argue that, in contrast to monolayer and bilayer graphene, the observed Landau level splittings and quantum Hall phase transitions can be understood within a single-particle picture, but imply the presence of a charge density imbalance between the inner and outer layers of TLG, even at charge neutrality and zero transverse electric field. Our results indicate the importance of a previously unaccounted band structure parameter which, together with a more accurate estimate of the other tight-binding parameters, results in a significantly improved determination of the electronic and Landau level structure of TLG., Comment: Accepted for publication in PRL

Combining experiment and theory, we investigate how the naturally created heterojunction at a graphene and metallic contact is modulated via interaction with molecular hydrogen (H2). Due to electrostatic interaction, a Cr/Au electrode induces a pn junction in graphene, leading to an asymmetrical resistance between the charge carriers (electron and hole). This asymmetry is well modeled by considering the preferential charge scattering at the pn junction, and we show that it can be modulated in a reversible, selective and asymmetrical manner by exposing H2 to the metal-graphene interface. Our results are valuable for understanding the nature of the metal-graphene interfaces and demonstrate a novel route towards hydrogen sensor application. KEYWORDS: graphene, contact resistance

We obtain an algorithm computing the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson (CSM) classes of Schubert cells in a generalized flag manifold G/B. In analogy to how the ordinary divided difference operators act on Schubert classes, each CSM class of a Schubert class is obtained by applying certain Demazure-Lusztig type operators to the CSM class of a cell of dimension one less. These operators define a representation of the Weyl group on the homology of G/B. By functoriality, we deduce algorithmic expressions for CSM classes of Schubert cells in any flag manifold G/P. We conjecture that the CSM classes of Schubert cells are an effective combination of (homology) Schubert classes, and prove that this is the case in several classes of examples. Consider the generalized flag manifold $G/B$ and the corresponding affine flag manifold $\mathcal{Fl}_G$. In this paper we use curve neighborhoods for Schubert varieties in $\mathcal{Fl}_G$ to construct certain affine Gromov-Witten invariants of $\mathcal{Fl}_G$, and to obtain a family of "affine quantum Chevalley" operators $\Lambda_0, \ldots, \Lambda_n$ indexed by the simple roots in the affine root system of $G$. These operators act on the cohomology ring $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ with coefficients in $\mathbb{Z}[q_0, \ldots,q_n]$. By analyzing commutativity and invariance properties of these operators we deduce the existence of two quantum cohomology rings, which satisfy properties conjectured earlier by Guest and Otofuji for $G= \mathrm{SL}_n(\mathbb{C})$. The first quantum ring is a deformation of the subalgebra of $\mathrm{H}^*(\mathcal{Fl}_G)$ generated by divisors. The second ring, denoted $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$, deforms the ordinary quantum cohomology ring $\mathrm{QH}^*(G/B)$ by adding an affine quantum parameter $q_0$. We prove that $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$ is a Frobenius algebra, and that the new quantum product determines a flat Dubrovin connection. Further, we develop an analogue of Givental and Kim formalism for this ring and we deduce a presentation of $\mathrm{QH}^*_{\mathrm{af}}(G/B)$ by generators and relations. A projected Gromov-Witten variety is the union of all rational curves of fixed degree that meet two opposite Schubert varieties in a homogeneous space X = G/P. When X is cominuscule we prove that the map from a related Gromov-Witten variety is cohomologically trivial. This implies that all (3 point, genus zero) K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of X are determined by the projected Gromov-Witten varieties, which extends an earlier result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer. A previous result of the authors with Chaput and Perrin states that the union of all rational curves of fixed degree passing through a Schubert variety in a homogeneous space G/P is again a Schubert variety. In this paper we identify this Schubert variety explicitly in terms of the Hecke product of Weyl group elements. We apply our result to give an explicit formula for any two-point Gromov-Witten invariant as well as a new proof of the quantum Chevalley formula and its equivariant generalization. ZnO nanowires have an enormous potential for applications as ultra-violet (UV) photodetectors. Their mechanism of photocurrent generation is intimately related with the presence of surface states where considerable efforts, such as surface chemical modifications, have been pursued to improve their photodetection capabilities. In this work, we report a step further in this direction demonstrating that the photosensitivity and quality factor (Q factor) of the photodetector are entirely tunable by an applied gate voltage. This mechanism enables UV photodetection selectivity ranging from wavelengths from tens of nanometers (full width at half maximum - FWHM) down to a narrow detection of 3 nm. Let X=G/P be a homogeneous space and e_k be the class of a simple coroot in H_2(X). A theorem of Strickland shows that for almost all X, the variety of pointed lines of degree e_k, denoted Z_k(X), is again a homogeneous space. For these X we show that the 3-point, genus 0, equivariant K-theoretic Gromov-Witten invariants of lines of degree e_k are equal to quantities obtained in the (ordinary) equivariant K-theory of Z_k(X). We apply this to compute the structure constants N_{u,v}^{w, e_k} for degree e_k from the multiplication of two Schubert classes in the equivariant quantum K-theory ring of X. Using geometry of spaces of lines through Schubert or Richardson varieties we prove vanishing and positivity properties of N_{u,v}^{w,e_k}. The product of two Schubert classes in the quantum K-theory ring of a homogeneous space X = G/P is a formal power series with coefficients in the Grothendieck ring of algebraic vector bundles on X. We show that if X is cominuscule, then this power series has only finitely many non-zero terms. The proof is based on a geometric study of boundary Gromov-Witten varieties in the Kontsevich moduli space, consisting of stable maps to X that take the marked points to general Schubert varieties and whose domains are reducible curves of genus zero. We show that all such varieties have rational singularities, and that boundary Gromov-Witten varieties defined by two Schubert varieties are either empty or unirational. We also prove a relative Kleiman-Bertini theorem for rational singularities, which is of independent interest. We demonstrate anisotropic etching of single-layer graphene by thermally-activated nickel nanoparticles. Using this technique, we obtain sub-10nm nanoribbons and other graphene nanostructures with edges aligned along a single crystallographic direction. We observe a new catalytic channeling behavior, whereby etched cuts do not intersect, resulting in continuously connected geometries. Raman spectroscopy and electronic measurements show that the quality of the graphene is resilient under the etching conditions, indicating that this method may serve as a powerful technique to produce graphene nanocircuits with well-defined crystallographic edges., Comment: Nano Letters 10.1021/nl900811r

For each infinite series of the classical Lie groups of type B,C or D, we introduce a family of polynomials parametrized by the elements of the corresponding Weyl group of infinite rank. These polynomials represent the Schubert classes in the equivariant cohomology of the appropriate flag variety. They satisfy a stability property, and are a natural extension of the (single) Schubert polynomials of Billey and Haiman, which represent non-equivariant Schubert classes. They are also positive in a certain sense, and when indexed by maximal Grassmannian elements, or by the longest element in a finite Weyl group, these polynomials can be expressed in terms of the factorial analogues of Schur's Q- or P-functions defined earlier by Ivanov., Comment: 41 pages, 2 tables; comments welcome

We show that (equivariant) K-theoretic 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants of genus zero on a Grassmann variety are equal to triple intersections computed in the ordinary (equivariant) K-theory of a two-step flag manifold, thus generalizing an earlier result of Buch, Kresch, and Tamvakis. In the process we show that the Gromov-Witten variety of curves passing through 3 general points is irreducible and rational. Our applications include Pieri and Giambelli formulas for the quantum K-theory ring of a Grassmannian, which determine the multiplication in this ring.
