Detecting microwave signals over a wide frequency range has numerous advantages as it enables simultaneous transmission of a large amount of information and access to more spectrum resources. This capability is crucial for applications such as microwave communication, remote sensing, and radar. However, conventional microwave receiving systems are limited by amplifiers and band-pass filters that can only operate efficiently in a specific frequency range. Typically, these systems can only process signals within a three-fold frequency range, which limits the data transfer bandwidth of the microwave communication systems. Developing novel atom-integrated microwave sensors, for example, radio frequency (RF)-chip coupled Rydberg atomic receiver, provides opportunities for a large working bandwidth of microwave sensing at the atomic level. Here, an ultra-wide dual-band RF sensing scheme is demonstrated by space-division multiplexing two RF-chip-integrated atomic receiver modules. The system can simultaneously receive dual-band microwave signals that span a frequency range exceeding 6 octaves (300 MHz and 24 GHz). The identification of tipping points is essential for prediction of collapses or other sudden changes in complex systems. Applications include studies of ecology, thermodynamics, climatology, and epidemiology. However, detecting early signs of proximity to a tipping is made challenging by complexity and non-linearity. Strongly interacting Rydberg atom gases offer model systems that offer both complexity and non-linearity, including phase transition and critical slowing down. Here, via an external probe we observe prior warning of the proximity of a phase transition of Rydberg thermal gases. This warning signal is manifested as a deviation from linear growth of the variance with increasing probe intensity. We also observed the dynamics of the critical slowing down behavior versus different time scales, and atomic densities, thus providing insights into the study of a Rydberg atom system's critical behavior. Our experiment suggests that the full critical slowing down dynamics of strongly-interacting Rydberg atoms can be probed systematically, thus providing a benchmark with which to identify critical phenomena in quantum many-body systems.

Engineering a Terahertz (THz) frequency comb spectroscopy at atomic level advances the precisely measurement in spectroscopy and sensing. Current progresses on THz frequency comb rely on difference-frequency generation, optical parametric oscillation, and other methods. Generating a THz frequency comb poses challenges in source stability and achieving a narrow bandwidth, which traditional THz devices are difficult to achieve. Furthermore, accurately measuring the generated THz frequency comb necessitates a high-performance THz detector. Rydberg atoms are well-suited for electric field sensing due to their ultra-wide radio frequency transition energy levels, making them especially sensitive to external electric fields in the DC to THz bandwidth. However, there have been no reports about generating THz frequency comb spectroscopy at the atomic level until now. This work presents a THz frequency comb spectroscopy with Rydberg atoms, in which a Floquet comb-like transition is engineered through a time-periodic drive field. Our approach simplifies the setup required for THz frequency comb spectroscopy while extending the working bandwidth for Rydberg atomic sensors. The THz frequency comb spectroscopy at the atomic level reported in this article shows great potential for various applications in astronomy, remote sensing, spectral detection of biological samples, and other related fields.

Developing microwave electric field sensing based on Rydberg atom has received significant attention due to its unique advantages. However, achieving effective coupling between Rydberg atom and the microwave electric field in the sensing process is a challenging problem that greatly impacts the sensitivity. To address this, we propose the use of a microwave resonant cavity to enhance the effective coupling between the Rydberg atoms and the microwave electric field. In our experiment, we use a three-photon excitation scheme to prepare Rydberg atoms, make measurements of electric fields without and with a microwave cavity in which the vapor cell is put inside. Through experimental testing, we achieve an 18 dB enhancement of power sensitivity. The experiment shows an effective enhancement in electric field pulse signal detection. This result provides a promising direction for enhancing the sensitivity of Rydberg atomic electric field sensors and paves the way for their application in precision electric field measurements.

A time crystal is an exotic phase of matter where time-translational symmetry is broken; this phase differs from the spatial symmetry breaking induced in crystals in space. Lots of experiments report the transition from a thermal equilibrium phase to time crystal phase. However, there is no experimental method to probe the bifurcation effect of distinct time crystals in quantum many-body systems. Here, in a driven and dissipative many-body Rydberg atom system, we observe multiple continuous dissipative time crystals and emergence of more complex temporal symmetries beyond the single time crystal phase. Bifurcation of time crystals in strongly interacting Rydberg atoms is observed; the process manifests as a transition from a time crystal state of long temporal order to one of short temporal order, or vice versa. By manipulating the driving field parameters, we observe the time crystal's bistability and a hysteresis loop. Quantum many-body systems near phase transitions respond collectively to externally applied perturbations. We explore this phenomenon in a laser-driven dissipative Rydberg gas that is tuned to a bistable regime. Here two metastable phases coexist, which feature a low and high density of Rydberg atoms, respectively. The ensuing collective dynamics, which we monitor in situ, is characterized by stochastic collective jumps between these two macroscopically distinct many-body phases. We show that the statistics of these jumps can be controlled using a dual-tone microwave field. In particular, we find that the distribution of jump times develops peaks corresponding to subharmonics of the relative microwave detuning. Our study demonstrates the control of collective statistical properties of dissipative quantum many-body systems without the necessity of fine-tuning or of ultra cold temperatures. Such robust phenomena may find technological applications in quantum sensing and metrology.

Microwave sensing has important applications in areas such as data communication and remote sensing, so it has received much attention from international academia, industry, and governments. Atomic wireless sensing uses the strong response of the large electric dipole moment of a Rydberg atom to an external field to achieve precise measurement of a radio frequency (RF) electric field. This has advantages over traditional wireless sensing. The advantage of a Rydberg atom is its ultra-wide energy level transitions, which make it responsive to RF electric fields over a wide bandwidth. Here, we briefly review the progress of electric field measurement based on Rydberg atoms. The main contents include the properties of Rydberg atoms, measurement using Rydberg atoms, and experimental progress in electric field measurement in different bands. We show the different methods for detecting electric fields such as atomic superheterodyne, machine learning, and critically enhanced measurement. The development of Rydberg atomic measurement focuses on the advantages of Rydberg atomic sensing, especially compared with conventional microwave receivers. It is challenging to probe ergodicity breaking trends of a quantum many-body system when dissipation inevitably damages quantum coherence originated from coherent coupling and dispersive two-body interactions. Rydberg atoms provide a test bed to detect emergent exotic many-body phases and non-ergodic dynamics where the strong Rydberg atom interaction competes with and overtakes dissipative effects even at room temperature. Here we report experimental evidence of a transition from ergodic towards ergodic breaking dynamics in driven-dissipative Rydberg atomic gases. The broken ergodicity is featured by the long-time phase oscillation, which is attributed from the formation of Rydberg excitation clusters in limit cycle phases. The broken symmetry in the limit cycle is a direct manifestation of many-body interactions, which is verified by tuning atomic densities in our experiment. The reported result reveals that Rydberg many-body systems are a promising candidate to probe ergodicity breaking dynamics, such as limit cycles, and enable the benchmark of non-equilibrium phase transition.

The spectral properties of an interacting many-body system may display critical character and have potential applications in precision metrology. Here, we demonstrate such many-body enhanced metrology for microwave (MW) electric fields in a non-equilibrium Rydberg atomic gas. Near criticality the high sensitivity of Rydberg atoms to external MW electric fields, combined with many-body enhancement induces significant changes in the optical transmission. We quantify this behavior using the Fisher information. For continuous optical transmission at the critical point, the Fisher information is three orders of magnitude larger than in independent particle systems, the measured data provides an equivalent sensitivity of 49 nV/cm/$\textrm{Hz}^{1/2}$. The reported results constitute a milestone towards the application of many-body effects in precision metrology.

Rydberg atoms have great potential in electric field measurement and have an advantage with a large frequency bandwidth from the kHz to the THz scale. However, the sensitivity for measuring a weak MHz electric field signal is limited by the spectroscopic resolution, because the weak electric field induces only a small perturbation of the population and energy level shift of the Rydberg atoms. Here, we report highly sensitive measurement of a weak MHz electric field using electromagnetically induced transparency with Rydberg atoms in a thermal atomic system. Using the heterodyne method on a 30-MHz electric field, we successfully measure the minimum electric field strength to be \textcolor{black}{37.3 $\mathrm{\mu V/cm}$} with a sensitivity up to $-65$ dBm/Hz and a linear dynamic range over 65 dB. Additionally, we measure an amplitude-modulated signal and demodulate the signal with a fidelity over 98\%. Developing frequency combs spectral technologies has potential applications and prospects in the wide fields of cosmology, meteorology, and microwave measurement. Here, we demonstrate a Rydberg microwave frequency comb spectrometer via multiple-microwave field dressing, providing precise microwave measurement. The Rydberg microwave frequency comb spectrum provides a real-time and absolute frequency measurement with a range of 125 MHz and gives the relative phase of a single-frequency microwave signal. The collective effect of large amounts of atoms exhibit an enhanced interaction between light and atoms. This holds great interest in quantum optics, and quantum information. When a collective excited state of a group of atoms during Rabi oscillation is varying, the oscillation exhibits rich dynamics. Here, we experimentally observe a size-reduction effect of the Rydberg collective state during Rabi oscillation in cold atomic dilute gases. The Rydberg collective state was first created by the Rydberg quantum memory, and we observed a decreased oscillation frequency effect by measuring the time traces of the retrieved light field amplitude, which exhibited chirped characteristics. This is caused by the simultaneous decay to the overall ground state and the overall loss of atoms. The observed oscillations are dependent on the effective Rabi frequency and detuning of the coupling laser, and the dephasing from inhomogeneous broadening. The reported results show the potential prospects of studying the dynamics of the collective effect of a large amount of atoms and manipulating a single-photon wave-packet based on the interaction between light and Rydberg atoms., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Recognition of multifrequency microwave (MW) electric fields is challenging because of the complex interference of multifrequency fields in practical applications. Rydberg atom-based measurements for multifrequency MW electric fields is promising in MW radar and MW communications. However, Rydberg atoms are sensitive not only to the MW signal but also to noise from atomic collisions and the environment, meaning that solution of the governing Lindblad master equation of light-atom interactions is complicated by the inclusion of noise and high-order terms. Here, we solve these problems by combining Rydberg atoms with deep learning model, demonstrating that this model uses the sensitivity of the Rydberg atoms while also reducing the impact of noise without solving the master equation. As a proof-of-principle demonstration, the deep learning enhanced Rydberg receiver allows direct decoding of the frequency-division multiplexed (FDM) signal. This type of sensing technology is expected to benefit Rydberg-based MW fields sensing and communication.

It is increasingly important to understand the spatial dynamics of epidemics. While there are numerous mathematical models of epidemics, there is a scarcity of physical systems with sufficiently well-controlled parameters to allow quantitative model testing. It is also challenging to replicate the macro non-equilibrium effects of complex models in microscopic systems. In this work, we demonstrate experimentally a physics analog of epidemic spreading using optically driven non-equilibrium phase transitions in strongly interacting Rydberg atoms. Using multiple laser beams we can impose any desired spatial structure. We observe spatially localized phase transitions and their interplay in different parts of the sample. These phase transitions simulate the outbreak of an infectious disease in multiple locations, as well as the dynamics towards herd immunity and endemic state in different regimes. Long-lived storage of arbitrary transverse multimodes is important for establishing a high-channel-capacity quantum network. Most of the pioneering works focused on atomic diffusion as the dominant impact on the retrieved pattern in an atom-based memory. In this work, we demonstrate that the unsynchronized Larmor precession of atoms in the inhomogeneous magnetic field dominates the distortion of the pattern stored in a cold-atom-based memory. We find that this distortion effect can be eliminated by applying a strong uniform polarization magnetic field. By preparing atoms in magnetically insensitive states, the destructive interference between different spin-wave components is diminished, and the stored localized patterns are synchronized further in a single spin-wave component; then, an obvious enhancement in preserving patterns for a long time is obtained. It is evident that increasing the intensive-care-unit (ICU) capacity and giving priority to admitting and treating younger patients will reduce the number of COVID-19 deaths, but a quantitative assessment of these measures has remained inadequate. We develop a comprehensive, non-Markovian state transition model, which is validated through accurate prediction of the daily death toll for two epicenters: Wuhan, China and Lombardy, Italy. The model enables prediction of COVID-19 deaths in various scenarios. For example, if treatment priorities had been given to younger patients, the death toll in Wuhan and Lombardy would have been reduced by 10.4\% and 6.7\%, respectively. The strategy depends on the epidemic scale and is more effective in countries with a younger population structure. Analyses of data from China, South Korea, Italy, and Spain suggest that countries with less per capita ICU medical resources should implement this strategy in the early stage of the pandemic to reduce mortalities., Comment: 39 pages, 14 figures

The spread of disease on complex networks has attracted widely attention in the physics community. Recent works have demonstrated that heterogeneous degree and weight distributions have a significant influence on the epidemic dynamics. In this study, a novel edge-weight based compartmental approach is developed to estimate the epidemic threshold and epidemic size (final infected density) on networks with general degree and weight distributions, and a remarkable agreement with numerics is obtained. Even in complex network with the strong heterogeneous degree and weight distributions, this approach is worked. We then propose an edge-weight based removal strategy with different biases, and find that such a strategy can effectively control the spread of epidemic when the highly weighted edges are preferentially removed, especially when the weight distribution of a network is extremely heterogenous. We present the results of a three-year photometric study of the $\delta$ Scuti star UV Trianguli. Our data sets consist of 9378 differential measurements in Johnson V together with a few data collected into the Str\"{o}mgren {\em uvby$\beta$} system. UV Tri is at least a biperiodic variable. The two best-fitting frequencies, $f_1$=9.3298 d$^{-1}$ and $f_2$=10.8513 d$^{-1}$, are still not the complete set of pulsation frequencies representing the star's light variations. A suspected third frequency might present in the star. Several ``anomalous cycles'' are observed in the light curves. They seem real, but are aperiodic. We derive the colour indices and physical parameters for the variable and conclude that it is a Population I $\delta$ Sct star with normal metal abundance ([Me/H]=0.0$\pm$n0.1 dex) evolving on its main sequence stage at an early evolutionary phase before the turn-off point. Finally, we compare the observed oscillation frequencies with theoretical models.
