Search

We search for an optimal filter design for the estimation of stellar metallicity, based on synthetic photometry from Gaia XP spectra convolved with a series of filter-transmission curves defined by different central wavelengths and bandwidths. Unlike previous designs based solely on maximizing metallicity sensitivity, we find that the optimal solution provides a balance between the sensitivity and uncertainty of the spectra. With this optimal filter design, the best precision of metallicity estimates for relatively bright ($G \sim 11.5$) stars is excellent, $\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]} = 0.034$\,dex for FGK dwarf stars, superior to that obtained utilizing custom sensitivity-optimized filters (e.g., SkyMapper\,$v$). By selecting hundreds of high-probabability member stars of the open cluster M67, our analysis reveals that the intrinsic photometric-metallicity scatter of these cluster members is only 0.036\,dex, consistent with this level of precision. Our results clearly demonstrate that the internal precision of photometric-metallicity estimates can be extremely high, even providing the opportunity to perform chemical tagging for very large numbers of field stars in the Milky Way. For any integer $n\ge 0$ and any ring $R$, \ $(\mathcal {PGF}_n, \ \mathcal P_n^\perp \cap \mathcal {PGF}^{\perp})$ proves to be a complete hereditary cotorsion pair in $R$-Mod, where $\mathcal {PGF}$ is the class of PGF modules, introduced by J. \v{S}aroch and J. \v{S}\'{t}ov\'{i}\v{c}ek, and \ $\mathcal {PGF}_n$ is the class of $R$-modules of PGF dimension $\le n$. For any Artin algebra $R$, \ $(\mathcal {GP}_n, \ \mathcal P_n^\perp \cap \mathcal {GP}^{\perp})$ proves to be a complete and hereditary cotorsion pair in $R$-Mod, where $\mathcal {GP}_n$ is the class of modules of Gorenstein projective dimension $\le n$. These cotorsion pairs induce two chains of hereditary Hovey triples \ $(\mathcal {PGF}_n, \ \mathcal P_n^\perp, \ \mathcal {PGF}^{\perp})$ and \ $(\mathcal {GP}_n, \ \mathcal P_n^\perp, \ \mathcal {GP}^{\perp})$, and the corresponding homotopy categories in the same chain are the same. It is observed that some complete cotorsion pairs in $R$-Mod can induce complete cotorsion pairs in some special extension closed subcategories of $R$-Mod. Then corresponding results in exact categories $\mathcal {PGF}_n$, \ $\mathcal {GP}_n$, \ $\mathcal {GF}_n$, \ $\mathcal {PGF}^{<\infty}$, \ $\mathcal {GP}^{<\infty}$ and $\mathcal {GF}^{<\infty}$, are also obtained. As a byproduct, $\mathcal{PGF} = \mathcal {GP}$ for a ring $R$ if and only if $\mathcal{PGF}^\perp\cap\mathcal{GP}_n=\mathcal P_n$ for some $n$.

We combine photometric data from GALEX GR6+7 AIS and Gaia EDR3 with stellar parameters from the SAGA and PASTEL catalogs to construct high-quality training samples for dwarfs ($\rm 0.4< BP-RP<1.6$) and giants ($\rm 0.6< BP-RP <1.6$). We apply careful reddening corrections using empirical temperature- and extinction-dependent extinction coefficients. Using the two samples, we establish a relationship between stellar loci (NUV$-$BP vs. BP$-$RP colors), metallicity, and $\rm M_G$. For a given BP$-$RP color, a 1 dex change in [Fe/H] corresponds to an approximately 1 magnitude change in NUV$-$BP color for solar-type stars. These relationships are employed to estimate metallicities based on NUV$-$BP, BP$-$RP, and $\rm M_G$. Thanks to the strong metallicity dependence in the GALEX NUV-band, our models enable a typical photometric-metallicity precision of approximately $\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]}$ = 0.11 dex for dwarfs and $\sigma_{\rm [Fe/H]}$ = 0.17 dex for giants, with an effective metallicity range extending down to [Fe/H] $= -3.0$ for dwarfs and [Fe/H] $= -4.0$ for giants. We also find that the NUV-band based photometric-metallicity estimate is not as strongly affected by carbon enhancement as previous photometric techniques. With the Gaia and GALEX data, we have estimated metallicities for about 5 million stars across almost the entire sky, including approximately 4.5 million dwarfs and 0.5 million giants. We present an X-ray spectrum of the diffuse X-ray background (DXRB) between 1.5 and 120 keV, as measured with the Low-Energy Detector (LE) and the High-Energy Detector (HE) aboard the Insight-HXMT satellite, based on 'blank-sky' observations. LE covers a nominal energy range of 1-15 keV and HE 20-250 keV, but calibration issues and data quality narrowed the energy range for this work. The LE background was directly measured with `blind' detector modules, while the HE background was derived from Earth-occultation data. With the LE data alone, the measured DXRB spectrum can be well described by a power law; fitting the LE and HE data jointly, however, a spectral cut-off must be introduced in the model to account for the measurements above 30 keV. Modelling the combined spectrum with a cut-off power law, the best-fit photon index is 1.40, normalisation $9.57$~$\rm ph~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}~keV^{-1}~sr^{-1} $ (at 1 keV), and cut-off energy 55 keV, after correcting for the effects of the Earth albedo and atmospheric emission (which are significant in the HE band). Based on the best-fit cut-off power law, we derived the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the DXRB. The shape of the SED is in general agreement with the published measurements, but the overall normalization is lower by varying amounts, except for the HEAO-1 result, with which our result is in good agreement., Comment: 9 pages, 14 figures, published in MNRAS

GRB 221009A is the brightest gamma-ray burst ever detected since the discovery of this kind of energetic explosions. However, an accurate measurement of the prompt emission properties of this burst is very challenging due to its exceptional brightness. With joint observations of \textit{Insight}-HXMT and GECAM-C, we made an unprecedentedly accurate measurement of the emission during the first $\sim$1800 s of GRB 221009A, including its precursor, main emission (ME, which dominates the burst in flux), flaring emission and early afterglow, in the hard X-ray to soft gamma-ray band from $\sim$ 10 keV to $\sim$ 6 MeV. Based on the GECAM-C unsaturated data of the ME, we measure a record-breaking isotropic equivalent energy ($E_{\rm iso}$) of $\bf \sim 1.5 \times 10^{55}$ erg, which is about eight times the total rest-mass energy of the Sun. The early afterglow data require a significant jet break between 650 s and 1100 s, most likely at $\sim950$ s from the afterglow starting time $T_{AG}$, which corresponds to a jet opening angle of $\sim {0.7^\circ} \ (\eta_\gamma n)^{1/8}$, where $n$ is the ambient medium density in units of $\rm cm^{-3}$ and $\eta_\gamma$ is the ratio between $\gamma$-ray energy and afterglow kinetic energy. The beaming-corrected total $\gamma$-ray energy $E_{\gamma}$ is $\sim 1.15 \times10^{51} \ (\eta_\gamma n)^{1/4}$ erg, which is typical for long GRBs. These results suggest that this GRB may have a special central engine, which could launch and collimate a very narrowly beamed jet with an ordinary energy budget, leading to exceptionally luminous gamma-ray radiation per unit solid angle. Alternatively, more GRBs might have such a narrow and bright beam, which are missed by an unfavorable viewing angle or have been detected without distance measurement., Comment: Submitted to National Science Review. Purpose: We present the five-year in-orbit background evolution of Insight-HXMT since the launch, as well as the effects of the background model in data analysis. Methods: The backgrounds of the three main payloads, i.e., Low-Energy Telescope, Medium-Energy Telescope and High-Energy Telescope, are described, respectively. The evolution of the background over time is obtained by simply comparing the background in every year during the in-orbit operation of Insight-HXMT. Results: The major observational characteristics of the Insight-HXMT in-orbit background are presented, including the light curve, spectrum, geographical distribution, and long-term evolution. The systematic error in background estimation is investigated for every year. Conclusion: The observational characteristics of the five-year in-orbit background are consistent with our knowledge of the satellite design and the space environment, and the background model is still valid for the latest observations of Insight-HXMT., Comment: 22 pages, 25 figures, accepted for publication in RDTM

Purpose: The High-Energy X-ray telescope (HE), one of the three main payloads of the \textit{Insight}-HXMT mission, is composed of eighteen NaI(Tl)/CsI(Na) phoswich detectors, where NaI(Tl) serves as the primary detector covering 20--250\,keV, and CsI(Na) is used as an active shield detector to suppress the background of NaI(Tl) and also serves as an all-sky gamma-ray burst monitor covering 0.2--3\,MeV. In this paper, we review the in-orbit performance of HE in the first 5 years since \textit{Insight}-HXMT was launched on June 15, 2017. Methods: The major performances we concern include the gain and energy resolution of NaI(Tl) and CsI(Na) detectors, the performance of pulse-shape-discriminator (PSD) and system dead-time. In this work, we investigate these performances mainly using the data of blank-sky observations and the data when the telescope in earth occultation. Results: The overall performance of HE/NaI(Tl) is very stable in the first 5 years, whereas the gain of HE/CsI(Na) shows a continuously increasing trend and should be calibrated regularly. Conclusion: In general, HE is still in good health and well-calibrated status after five-year's operation. The in-orbit performance of HE has no significant deviation from expectation. Persistent spin textures (PSTs) in solid-state materials arise from a unidirectional spin-orbit field in momentum space and offer a route to deliver long carrier spin lifetimes sought for future quantum microelectronic devices. Nonetheless, few three-dimensional materials are known to host PSTs owing to crystal symmetry and chemical requirements. There are even fewer examples demonstrated experimentally. Here we report that high-quality persistent spin textures can be obtained in the polar point groups containing an odd number of mirror operations. We use representation theory analysis and electronic structure calculations to formulate general discovery principles to identify PSTs hidden in known complex ternary layered and perovskite structures with large electric polarizations. We then show some of these materials exhibit PSTs without requiring any special crystalline symmetries. This finding removes the limitation imposed by mirror-symmetry protected PSTs that has limited compound discovery. Our general design approach enables the pursuit of persistent spin helices in materials exhibiting the $C_{3v}$ crystal class adopted by many quantum materials exhibiting large Rashba coefficients.

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), is China's first X-ray astronomy satellite launched on June 15, 2017. The anti-coincidence CsI detectors of the High Energy X-ray telescope (HE) onboard Insight-HXMT could serve as an all-sky gamma-ray monitor in about 0.2-3 MeV. In its first four years of operation, Insight-HXMT has detected 322 Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) by offline search pipeline including blind search and targeted search. For the GOLDEN sample of Insight-HXMT GRBs, joint analyses were performed with other GRB missions, including Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (Fermi/GBM), Swift Burst Alert Telescope (Swift/BAT) and Gravitational wave high-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM). It shows that Insight-HXMT can provide better constraint on GRB spectrum at higher energy band. The properties of Insight-HXMT GRBs are reported in detail, including their trigger time, duration, spectral parameters, peak fluxes of different time scales and fluence. We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate EXO 1846-031 during its outburst in 2019 with the observations of Insight-HXMT, NICER and MAXI. This outburst can be classfied roughly into four different states. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (about 0.1-6Hz) and Insight-HXMT (about 0.7-8Hz) are also reported in this work. Meanwhile, we study various physical quantities related to QPO frequency.The QPO rms-frequency relationship in three energy band 1-10 keV indicates that there is a turning pointing in frequency around 2 Hz,which is similar to that of GRS 1915+105. A possible hypothesis for the relationship above may be related to the inclination of the source, which may require a high inclination to explain it. The relationships between QPO frequency and QPO rms,hardness,total fractional rms and count rate have also been found in other transient sources, which can indicate that the origin of type-C QPOs is non-thermal.

Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are commonly found in black hole X-ray binaries, and their origin is still under debate. The properties of LFQPOs at high energies (above 30 keV) are closely related to the nature of the accretion flow in the innermost regions, and thus play a crucial role in critically testing various theoretical models. The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) is capable of detecting emissions above 30 keV, and is therefore an ideal instrument to do so. Here we report the discovery of LFQPOs above 200 keV in the new black hole MAXI J1820+070 in the X-ray hard state, which allows us to understand the behaviours of LFQPOs at hundreds of kiloelectronvolts. The phase lag of the LFQPO is constant around zero below 30 keV, and becomes a soft lag (that is, the high-energy photons arrive first) above 30 keV. The soft lag gradually increases with energy and reaches ~0.9s in the 150-200 keV band. The detection at energies above 200 keV, the large soft lag and the energy-related behaviors of the LFQPO pose a great challenge for most currently existing models, but suggest that the LFQPO probably originates from the precession of a small-scale jet., Comment: 36 pages, 12 figures, 3 tables; published in Nature Astronomy

Accurate background estimation is essential for spectral and temporal analysis in astrophysics. In this work, we construct the in-orbit background model for the High-Energy Telescope (HE) of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (dubbed as Insight-HXMT). Based on the two-year blank sky observations of Insight-HXMT/HE, we first investigate the basic properties of the background and find that both the background spectral shape and intensity have long-term evolution at different geographical sites. The entire earth globe is then divided into small grids, each with a typical area of 5x5 square degrees in geographical coordinate system. For each grid, an empirical function is used to describe the long-term evolution of each channel of the background spectrum; the intensity of the background can be variable and a modification factor is introduced to account for this variability by measuring the contemporary flux of the blind detector. For a given pointing observation, the background model is accomplished by integrating over the grids that are passed by the track of the satellite in each orbit. Such a background model is tested with both the blank sky observations and campaigns for observations of a series of celestial sources. The results show an average systematic error of 1.5% for the background energy spectrum (26-100 keV) under a typical exposure of 8 ks, and <3% for background light curve estimation (30-150 keV). With more than 150 blank sky observations at high Galactic latitude, we make a systematic study to the background of the Low Energy Telescope (LE) of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (dubbed as Insight-HXMT). Both the on-ground simulation and the in-orbit observation indicate that the background spectrum mainly has two components. One is the particle background that dominates above 7 keV and its spectral shape is consistent in every geographical locations. Another is the diffuse X-ray background that dominates below 7 keV and has a stable spectrum less dependent of the sky region. The particle background spectral shape can be obtained from the blind detector data of all the blank sky observations, and the particle background intensity can be measured by the blind detector at 10-12.5 keV. The diffuse X-ray background in the high Galactic latitude can also be obtained from the blank sky spectra after subtracting the particle background. Based on these characteristics, we develop the background model for both the spectrum and the light curve. The systematic error for the background spectrum is investigated with different exposures (T_exp). For the spectrum with T_exp=1 ks, the average systematic errors in 1-7 keV and 1-10 keV are 4.2% and 3.7%, respectively. We also perform the systematic error analyses of the background light curves with different energy bands and time bins. The Medium Energy X-ray Telescope (ME) is one of the main payloads of the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (dubbed as Insight-HXMT). The background of Insight-HXMT/ME is mainly caused by the environmental charged particles and the background intensity is modulated remarkably by the geomagnetic field, as well as the geographical location. At the same geographical location, the background spectral shape is stable but the intensity varies with the level of the environmental charged particles. In this paper, we develop a model to estimate the ME background based on the ME database that is established with the two-year blank sky observations of the high Galactic latitude. In this model, the entire geographical area covered by Insight-HXMT is divided into grids of $5^{\circ}\times5^{\circ}$ in geographical coordinate system. For each grid, the background spectral shape can be obtained from the background database and the intensity can be corrected by the contemporary count rate of the blind FOV detectors. Thus the background spectrum can be obtained by accumulating the background of all the grids passed by Insight-HXMT during the effective observational time. The model test with the blank sky observations shows that the systematic error of the background estimation in $8.9-44.0$ keV is $\sim1.3\%$ for a pointing observation with an average exposure $\sim5.5$ ks. We also find that the systematic error is anti-correlated with the exposure, which indicates the systematic error is partly contributed by the statistical error of count rate measured by the blind FOV detectors., Comment: to be published in Journal of High Energy Astrophysics

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.

The multi-armed bandit (MAB) problem is a classic example of the exploration-exploitation dilemma. It is concerned with maximising the total rewards for a gambler by sequentially pulling an arm from a multi-armed slot machine where each arm is associated with a reward distribution. In static MABs, the reward distributions do not change over time, while in dynamic MABs, each arm's reward distribution can change, and the optimal arm can switch over time. Motivated by many real applications where rewards are binary, we focus on dynamic Bernoulli bandits. Standard methods like $\epsilon$-Greedy and Upper Confidence Bound (UCB), which rely on the sample mean estimator, often fail to track changes in the underlying reward for dynamic problems. In this paper, we overcome the shortcoming of slow response to change by deploying adaptive estimation in the standard methods and propose a new family of algorithms, which are adaptive versions of $\epsilon$-Greedy, UCB, and Thompson sampling. These new methods are simple and easy to implement. Moreover, they do not require any prior knowledge about the dynamic reward process, which is important for real applications. Full functional and performance tests were performed many times before the Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) launch. During one of the tests, the count rate curves of the 18 High Energy Detectors (HED) have been found increased consistently within an interval of time. A further study on the correlation between the count rate and rainfall was carried out,and the increased net spectrum was also analyzed. The analysis results indicate that the short-lived 222Rn decay products (214Pb and 214Bi) in rainwater were responsible for the transient changes of the background radiation spectra in HEDs. The results show that the HXMT/HEDs have a good detection sensitivity on X/gamma rays, and the detector calibration results are effective., Comment: 6 pages,6 figures (2subplot in fig.2), submitted to Chinese Physics C

A first-principles approach called the {\it{self-consistent quasiharmonic approximation}} (SC-QHA) method is formulated to calculate the thermal expansion, thermomechanics, and thermodynamic functions of solids at finite temperatures with both high efficiency and accuracy. The SC-QHA method requires fewer phonon calculations than the conventional QHA method, and also facilitates the convenient analysis of the microscopic origins of macroscopic thermal phenomena. The superior performance of the SC-QHA method is systematically examined by comparing it with the conventional QHA method and experimental measurements on silicon, diamond, and alumina. It is then used to study the effects of pressure on the anharmonic lattice properties of diamond and alumina. The thermal expansion and thermomechanics of Ca$_3$Ti$_2$O$_7$, which is a recently discovered important ferroelectric ceramic with a complex crystal structure that is computationally challenging for the conventional QHA method, are also calculated using the formulated SC-QHA method. The SC-QHA method can significantly reduce the computational expense for various quasiharmonic thermal properties especially when there are a large number of structures to consider or when the solid is structurally complex. It is anticipated that the algorithm will be useful for a variety of fields, including oxidation, corrosion, high-pressure physics, ferroelectrics, and high-throughput structure screening when temperature effects are required to accurately describe realistic properties.

The presence of a switchable spontaneous electric polarization makes ferroelectrics ideal candidates for the use in many applications such as memory and sensors devices. Since known ferroelectrics are rather limited, finding new ferroelectric (FE) materials has become a flourishing field. One promising route is to design the so-called hybrid improper ferroelectricity. However, the previous approach based on the Landau theory is not easily adopted to the systems that are unrelated to the Pbnm perovskite structure. To this end, we develop a general design rule that is applicable to any systems. By combining this rule with density functional theory calculations, we identify previously unrecognized classes of FE materials. It shows that the R-3c perovskite structure can become FE by substituting half of the B-site cations. ZnSrO2 with a non-perovskite layered structure can also be FE through the anion substitution. It has become widely known that when two flows of pedestrians cross stripes emerge spontaneously by which the pedestrians of the two walking directions manage to pass each other in an orderly manner. In this work, we report about the results of an experiment on crossing flows which has been carried out at a German school. These results include that previously reported high flow volumes on the crossing area can be confirmed. We designed and implemented a signal generator that can simulate the output of the NaI (Tl)CsI (Na) detectors pre amplifier onboard the Hard X ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT). Using the development of FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) with VHDL language and adding random constituent, we have finally produced the double exponential random pulse signal generator. The statistical distribution of signal amplitude is programmable.
