- Abstract
In California, computers are needed for students to participate in the annual state assessments, the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). Public school districts across the state of California are required to formulate Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs) each year. This mixed-method study first conducted content analysis of LCAPs of 80 school districts in Los Angeles county focusing on the type of devices identified in the LCAP. The content analysis resulted in four categories of school districts (those with no iPads and Chromebooks, those with iPads only, those with Chromebooks only, and those with both iPads and Chromebooks). Differences in the means were found followed by post hoc analyses to provide further details on which of these means are significantly different from each other. This study found that school districts having iPads scored below those school districts that do not have iPads or Chromebooks. School districts that have Chromebooks scored above those that do not have iPads or Chromebooks. School districts that have both iPads and Chromebooks had the highest student achievements as measured on the 2016 California state assessments for English Language Arts and Math.
