We study the unflavored Schur indices in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory for the $B_n,C_n,D_n, G_2$ gauge groups. We explore two methods, namely the character expansion method and the Fermi gas method, to efficiently compute the $q$-series expansion of the Schur indices to some high orders. Using the available data and the modular properties, we are able to fix the exact formulas for the general gauge groups up to some high ranks and discover some interesting new features. We also identify some empirical modular anomaly equations, but unlike the case of $A_n$ groups, they are quite complicated and not sufficiently useful to fix exact formulas for gauge groups of arbitrary rank., Comment: 30 pages

We consider the von Neumann entropy of a thermal mixed state in quantum systems derived from mirror curves, where the kinetic terms are exponential functions of the momentum operators. Using the mathematical results on the asymptotics of the energy eigenvalues, we compute the asymptotic entropy in high temperature limit and compare with that of the conventional models. Recently, a novel measure for the complexity of operator growth is proposed based on Lanczos algorithm and Krylov recursion method. We study this Krylov complexity in quantum mechanical systems derived from some well-known local toric Calabi-Yau geometries, as well as some non-relativistic models. We find that for the Calabi-Yau models, the Lanczos coefficients grow slower than linearly for small $n$'s, consistent with the behavior of integrable models. On the other hand, for the non-relativistic models, the Lanczos coefficients initially grow linearly for small $n$'s, then reach a plateau. Although this looks like the behavior of a chaotic system, it is mostly likely due to saddle-dominated scrambling effects instead, as argued in the literature. In our cases, the slopes of linearly growing Lanczos coefficients almost saturate a bound by the temperature. We propose the refined topological string correspondence to the expectation values of half-BPS Wilson loop operators in 5d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theory partition function on the Omega-deformed background $\mathbb{R}^4_{\epsilon_{1,2}}\times S^1$. We provide the refined topological vertex method and the refined holomorphic anomaly equation method in the topological string theory, from which we have exact computations on the 5d Wilson loops partition functions in both A- and B-models. Finally, with the exact results we have in B-model, we recover the quantum periods of local $\mathbb{P}^1\times\mathbb{P}^1$ model and local $\mathbb{P}^2$ model in the study of quantum geometry and we further give a refined generalization of A-period., Comment: 61 pages, 11 figures

We propose a novel modular anomaly equation for the unflavored Schur index in the $\mathcal{N}=4$ $SU(N)$ super-Yang-Mills theory. The vanishing conditions overdetermine the modular ambiguity ansatz from the equation, thus together they are sufficient to recursively compute the exact Schur indices for all $SU(N)$ gauge groups. Recently, a novel bootstrap method for numerical calculations in matrix models and quantum mechanical systems is proposed. We apply the method to certain quantum mechanical systems derived from some well-known local toric Calabi-Yau geometries, where the exact quantization conditions have been conjecturally related to topological string theory. We find that the bootstrap method provides a promising alternative for the precision numerical calculations of the energy eigenvalues. An improvement in our approach is to use a larger set of two-dimensional operators instead of one-dimensional ones. We also apply our improved bootstrap methods to some non-relativistic models in the recent literature and demonstrate better numerical accuracies., Comment: 21 pages, 21 figures

Recently, Okuyama and Sakai proposed a novel holomorphic anomaly equation for the partition function of 2d Yang-Mills theory on a torus, based on an anholomorphic deformation of the propagator in the bosonic formulation. Recently, we proposed a novel entry of the pp-wave holographic dictionary, which equated the Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) two-point functions in free $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory with the norm squares of the quantum unitary transition amplitudes between the corresponding tensionless strings in the infinite curvature limit, for the cases with no more than three string modes in different transverse directions. A seemingly highly non-trivial conjectural consequence, particularly in the case of three string modes, is the non-negativity of the BMN two-point functions at any higher genus for any mode numbers. In the type IIB maximally supersymmetric pp-wave background, stringy excited modes are described by BMN (Berenstein-Madalcena-Nastase) operators in the dual $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. In this paper, we continue the studies of higher genus free BMN correlators with more stringy modes, mostly focusing on the case of genus one and four stringy modes in different transverse directions. Surprisingly, we find that the non negativity of torus two-point functions, which is a consequence of a previously proposed probability interpretation and has been verified in the cases with two and three stringy modes, is no longer true for the case of four or more stringy modes. Nevertheless, the factorization formula, which is also a proposed holographic dictionary relating the torus two-point function to a string diagram calculation, is still valid. We also check the correspondence of planar three-point functions with Green-Schwarz string vertex with many string modes. We discuss some issues in the case of multiple stringy modes in the same transverse direction. We make a proposal for calculating refined Gopakumar-Vafa numbers (GVN) on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds based on refined holomorphic anomaly equations. The key examples are smooth elliptic fibrations over (almost) Fano surfaces. We include a detailed review of existing mathematical methods towards defining and calculating the (unrefined) Gopakumar-Vafa invariants (GVI) and the GVNs on compact Calabi-Yau 3-folds using moduli of stable sheaves, in a language that should be accessible to physicists. In particular, we discuss the dependence of the GVNs on the complex structure moduli and on the choice of an orientation. We calculate the GVNs in many instances and compare the B-model predictions with the geometric calculations. We also derive the modular anomaly equations from the holomorphic anomaly equations by analyzing the quasi-modular properties of the propagators. We continue the study of a novel relation between quantum periods and TBA(Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz)-like difference equations, generalize previous works to a large class of Calabi-Yau geometries described by three-term quantum operators. We give two methods to derive the TBA-like equations. One method uses only elementary functions while the other method uses Faddeev's quantum dilogarithm function. In real-world single image super-resolution (SISR) task, the low-resolution image suffers more complicated degradations, not only downsampled by unknown kernels. However, existing SISR methods are generally studied with the synthetic low-resolution generation such as bicubic interpolation (BI), which greatly limits their performance. Recently, some researchers investigate real-world SISR from the perspective of the camera and smartphone. However, except the acquisition equipment, the display device also involves more complicated degradations. In this paper, we focus on the camera-screen degradation and build a real-world dataset (Cam-ScreenSR), where HR images are original ground truths from the previous DIV2K dataset and corresponding LR images are camera-captured versions of HRs displayed on the screen. We conduct extensive experiments to demonstrate that involving more real degradations is positive to improve the generalization of SISR models. Moreover, we propose a joint two-stage model. Firstly, the downsampling degradation GAN(DD-GAN) is trained to model the degradation and produces more various of LR images, which is validated to be efficient for data augmentation. Then the dual residual channel attention network (DuRCAN) learns to recover the SR image. The weighted combination of L1 loss and proposed Laplacian loss are applied to sharpen the high-frequency edges. Extensive experimental results in both typical synthetic and complicated real-world degradations validate the proposed method outperforms than existing SOTA models with less parameters, faster speed and better visual results. Moreover, in real captured photographs, our model also delivers best visual quality with sharper edge, less artifacts, especially appropriate color enhancement, which has not been accomplished by previous methods.

We study a class of quantum integrable systems derived from dimer graphs and also described by local toric Calabi-Yau geometries with higher genus mirror curves, generalizing some previous works on genus one mirror curves. We compute the spectra of the quantum systems both by standard perturbation method and by Bohr-Sommerfeld method with quantum periods as the phase volumes. In this way, we obtain some exact analytic results for the classical and quantum periods of the Calabi-Yau geometries. We also determine the differential operators of the quantum periods and compute the topological string free energy in Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) limit. There is an interesting relation between the quantum periods on a certain limit of local $\mathbb{P}^1\times \mathbb{P}^1$ Calabi-Yau space and a TBA (Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz) system appeared in the studies of ABJM (Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena) theory. In a previous paper, we proposed a probability interpretation for higher genus amplitudes of BMN (Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase) strings in a pp-wave background with infinite negative curvature. This provides a natural definition of the entropy of a BMN string as the Shannon entropy of its corresponding probability distribution. We prove a universal upper bound that the entropy grows at most logarithmically in the strong string coupling limit. In a previous paper we proposed a factorization principle for the correlation functions of Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase (BMN) operators in free $\mathcal{N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. These correlators are conjectured to described physical string amplitudes in an infinitely curved Ramond-Ramond pp-wave background. There was a puzzle that the factorization seems to break down for $S$-channel in the $2\rightarrow 2$ scattering process. Here we resolve this puzzle by including some diagrams missed in the previous paper. This review summarizes the recent developments in topological string theory from the author's perspective, mostly focused on aspects of research in which the author is involved. After a brief overview of the theory, we discuss two aspects of these developments. First, we discuss the computational progress in the topological string partition functions on a class of elliptic Calabi-Yau manifolds. We propose to use Jacobi forms as an ansatz for the partition function. For non-compact models, the techniques often provide complete solutions, while for compact models, though it is still not completely solvable, we compute to higher genus than previous works. Second, we explore a remarkable connection of refined topological strings on a class of non-compact toric Calabi-Yau threefolds with non-perturbative effects in quantum-mechanical systems. Style transfer of polyphonic music recordings is a challenging task when considering the modeling of diverse, imaginative, and reasonable music pieces in the style different from their original one. To achieve this, learning stable multi-modal representations for both domain-variant (i.e., style) and domain-invariant (i.e., content) information of music in an unsupervised manner is critical. In this paper, we propose an unsupervised music style transfer method without the need for parallel data. Besides, to characterize the multi-modal distribution of music pieces, we employ the Multi-modal Unsupervised Image-to-Image Translation (MUNIT) framework in the proposed system. This allows one to generate diverse outputs from the learned latent distributions representing contents and styles. Moreover, to better capture the granularity of sound, such as the perceptual dimensions of timbre and the nuance in instrument-specific performance, cognitively plausible features including mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC), spectral difference, and spectral envelope, are combined with the widely-used mel-spectrogram into a timber-enhanced multi-channel input representation. The Relativistic average Generative Adversarial Networks (RaGAN) is also utilized to achieve fast convergence and high stability. We conduct experiments on bilateral style transfer tasks among three different genres, namely piano solo, guitar solo, and string quartet. Results demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method in music style transfer with improved sound quality and in allowing users to manipulate the output.

We apply the modular approach to computing the topological string partition function on non-compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau 3-folds with higher Kodaira singularities in the fiber. The approach consists in making an ansatz for the partition function at given base degree, exact in all fiber classes to arbitrary order and to all genus, in terms of a rational function of weak Jacobi forms. Our results yield, at given base degree, the elliptic genus of the corresponding non-critical 6d string, and thus the associated BPS invariants of the 6d theory. The required elliptic indices are determined from the chiral anomaly 4-form of the 2d worldsheet theories, or the 8-form of the corresponding 6d theories, and completely fix the holomorphic anomaly equation constraining the partition function. We introduce subrings of the known rings of Weyl invariant Jacobi forms which are adapted to the additional symmetries of the partition function, making its computation feasible to low base wrapping number. In contradistinction to the case of simpler singularities, generic vanishing conditions on BPS numbers are no longer sufficient to fix the modular ansatz at arbitrary base wrapping degree. G\"{o}ttsche-Nakajima-Yoshioka K-theoretic blowup equations characterize the Nekrasov partition function of five dimensional $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmetric gauge theories compactified on a circle, which via geometric engineering correspond to the refined topological string theory on $SU(N)$ geometries. In this paper, we study the K-theoretic blowup equations for general local Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find that both vanishing and unity blowup equations exist for the partition function of refined topological string, and the crucial ingredients are the $\bf r$ fields introduced in our previous paper. These blowup equations are in fact the functional equations for the partition function and each of them results in infinite identities among the refined free energies. Evidences show that they can be used to determine the full refined BPS invariants of local Calabi-Yau threefolds. This serves an independent and sometimes more powerful way to compute the partition function other than the refined topological vertex in the A-model and the refined holomorphic anomaly equations in the B-model. We study the modular properties of the blowup equations and provide a procedure to determine all the vanishing and unity $\bf r$ fields from the polynomial part of refined topological string at large radius point. F-theory compactifications on appropriate local elliptic Calabi-Yau manifolds engineer six dimensional superconformal field theories and their mass deformations. The partition function $Z_{top}$ of the refined topological string on these geometries captures the particle BPS spectrum of this class of theories compactified on a circle. Organizing $Z_{top}$ in terms of contributions $Z_\beta$ at base degree $\beta$ of the elliptic fibration, we find that these, up to a multiplier system, are meromorphic Jacobi forms of weight zero with modular parameter the Kaehler class of the elliptic fiber and elliptic parameters the couplings and mass parameters. The indices with regard to the multiple elliptic parameters are fixed by the refined holomorphic anomaly equations, which we show to be completely determined from knowledge of the chiral anomaly of the corresponding SCFT. We express $Z_\beta$ as a quotient of weak Jacobi forms, with a universal denominator inspired by its pole structure as suggested by the form of $Z_{top}$ in terms of 5d BPS numbers. The numerator is determined by modularity up to a finite number of coefficients, which we prove to be fixed uniquely by imposing vanishing conditions on 5d BPS numbers as boundary conditions. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach with many examples, in particular solving the E-string and M-string theories including mass deformations, as well as theories constructed as chains of these. We make contact with previous work by showing that spurious singularities are cancelled when the partition function is written in the form advocated here. Finally, we use the BPS invariants of the E-string thus obtained to test a generalization of the Goettsche-Nakajima-Yoshioka $K$-theoretic blowup equation, as inspired by the Grassi-Hatsuda-Marino conjecture, to generic local Calabi-Yau threefolds., Comment: 64 pages; v2: typos corrected

We establish the precise relation between the Nekrasov-Shatashvili (NS) quantization scheme and Grassi-Hatsuda-Marino conjecture for the mirror curve of arbitrary toric Calabi-Yau threefold. For a mirror curve of genus $g$, the NS quantization scheme leads to $g$ quantization conditions for the corresponding integrable system. The exact NS quantization conditions enjoy a self S-duality with respect to Planck constant $\hbar$ and can be derived from the Lockhart-Vafa partition function of nonperturbative topological string. Based on a recent observation on the correspondence between spectral theory and topological string, another quantization scheme was proposed by Grassi-Hatsuda-Marino, in which there is a single quantization condition and the spectra are encoded in the vanishing of a quantum Riemann theta function. We demonstrate that there actually exist at least $g$ nonequivalent quantum Riemann theta functions and the intersections of their theta divisors coincide with the spectra determined by the exact NS quantization conditions. This highly nontrivial coincidence between the two quantization schemes requires infinite constraints among the refined Gopakumar-Vafa invariants. The equivalence for mirror curves of genus one has been verified for some local del Pezzo surfaces. In this paper, we generalize the correspondence to higher genus, and analyze in detail the resolved $\mathbb{C}^3/\mathbb{Z}_5$ orbifold and several $SU(N)$ geometries. We propose a new exact quantization condition for a class of quantum mechanical systems derived from local toric Calabi-Yau three-folds. Our proposal includes all contributions to the energy spectrum which are non-perturbative in the Planck constant, and is much simpler than the available quantization condition in the literature. We check that our proposal is consistent with previous works and implies non-trivial relations among the topological Gopakumar-Vafa invariants of the toric Calabi-Yau geometries. We give evidence that the all genus amplitudes of topological string theory on compact elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau manifolds can be written in terms of meromorphic Jacobi forms whose weight grows linearly and whose index grows quadratically with the base degree. The denominators of these forms have a simple universal form with the property that the poles of the meromorphic form lie only at torsion points. The modular parameter corresponds to the fibre class while the role of the string coupling is played by the elliptic parameter. This leads to very strong all genus results on these geometries, which are checked against results from curve counting. The structure can be viewed as an indication that an N=2 analog of the reciprocal of the Igusa cusp form exists that might govern the topological string theory on these Calabi-Yau manifolds completely., Comment: 80 pages, 1 figure

A precise formula for the elliptic genus of three E-strings is presented. The related refined free energy coincides with the result calculated from topological string on local half K3 Calabi-Yau threefold up to genus twelve. The elliptic genus of three heterotic strings computed from M9 domain walls matches with the result from orbifold formula to high orders. This confirms the n=3 case of the recent conjecture that n pairs of E-strings can recombine into n heterotic strings., Comment: 32 pages

We consider the quantum spectral problem appearing the Fermi gas formulation of the ABJM (Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena) matrix model. This is known to related to the refined topological string on local P^1*P^1 Calabi-Yau geometry. In the ABJM setting the problem is formulated by an integral equation, and is somewhat different from the one formulated directly in terms of the Calabi-Yau geometry and studied in our earlier paper. We use the similar method in our earlier paper to determine the non-perturbative contributions to the quantum phase volume in the ABJM case from the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition. As in our earlier paper, the non-perturbative contributions contain higher order smooth corrections beyond those required by singularity cancellations with the perturbative contributions proposed by Kallen and Marino. We consider certain quantum spectral problems appearing in the study of local Calabi-Yau geometries. The quantum spectrum can be computed by the Bohr-Sommerfeld quantization condition for a period integral. For the case of small Planck constant, the periods are computed perturbatively by deformation of the Omega background parameters in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit. We compare the calculations with the results from the standard perturbation theory for the quantum Hamiltonian. There have been proposals in the literature for the non-perturbative contributions based on singularity cancellation with the perturbative contributions. We compute the quantum spectrum numerically with some high precisions for many cases of Planck constant. We find that there are also some higher order non-singular non-perturbative contributions, which are not captured by the singularity cancellation mechanism. We use mirror symmetry, quantum geometry and modularity properties of elliptic curves to calculate the refined free energies in the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit on non-compact toric Calabi-Yau manifolds, based on del Pezzo surfaces. Quantum geometry here is to be understood as a quantum deformed version of rigid special geometry, which has its origin in the quantum mechanical behaviour of branes in the topological string B-model. We will argue that, in the Seiberg-Witten picture, only the Coulomb parameters lead to quantum corrections, while the mass parameters remain uncorrected. In certain cases we will also compute the expansion of the free energies at the orbifold point and the conifold locus. We use mirror symmetry, the refined holomorphic anomaly equation and modularity properties of elliptic singularities to calculate the refined BPS invariants of stable pairs on non-compact Calabi-Yau manifolds, based on del Pezzo surfaces and elliptic surfaces, in particular the half K3. The BPS numbers contribute naturally to the five-dimensional N=1 supersymmetric index of M-theory, but they can be also interpreted in terms of the superconformal index in six dimensions and upon dimensional reduction the generating functions count N=2 Seiberg-Witten gauge theory instantons in four dimensions. Using the M/F-theory uplift the additional information encoded in the spin content can be used in an essential way to obtain information about BPS states in physical systems associated to small instantons, tensionless strings, gauge symmetry enhancement in F-theory by [p,q]-strings as well as M-strings., Comment: 120 pages, 21 figures

We study the instanton partition functions of two well-known superconformal field theories with mass deformations. Two types of anomaly equations, namely, the modular anomaly and holomorphic anomaly, have been discovered in the literature. We provide a clean solution to the long standing puzzle about their precise relation, and obtain some universal formulas. We study the Nekrasov-Shatashvili limit of the N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory and topological string theory on certain local toric Calabi-Yau manifolds. In this limit one of the two deformation parameters \epsilon_{1,2} of the Omega background is set to zero and we study the perturbative expansion of the topological amplitudes around the remaining parameter. We derive differential equations from Seiberg-Witten curves and mirror geometries, which determine the higher genus topological amplitudes up to a constant. We show that the higher genus formulae previously obtained from holomorphic anomaly equations and boundary conditions satisfy these differential equations. We give an interpretation of the Omega deformed B-model that leads naturally to the generalized holomorphic anomaly equations. Direct integration of the latter calculates topological amplitudes of four dimensional rigid N=2 theories explicitly in general Omega-backgrounds in terms of modular forms. These amplitudes encode the refined BPS spectrum as well as new gravitational couplings in the effective action of N=2 supersymmetric theories. The rigid N=2 field theories we focus on are the conformal rank one N=2 Seiberg-Witten theories. The failure of holomorphicity is milder in the conformal cases, but fixing the holomorphic ambiguity is only possible upon mass deformation. Our formalism applies irrespectively of whether a Lagrangian formulation exists. In the class of rigid N=2 theories arising from compactifications on local Calabi-Yau manifolds, we consider the theory of local P2. We systematically study the factorization and recursion relations in higher genus correlation functions of BMN (Berenstein-Maldacena-Nastase) operators in free N=4 super Yang Mills theory. These properties were found in a previous paper by the author, and were conjectured to result from the correspondence with type IIB string theory on the infinitely curved pp-wave background, where the strings become effectively infinitely long. Here we push the calculations to higher genus, provide more clarifications and verifications of the factorization and recursion relations. We extend the direct integration method of the holomorphic anomaly equations to general Omega backgrounds for pure SU(2) N=2 Super-Yang-Mills theory and topological string theory on non-compact Calabi-Yau threefolds. We find that an extension of the holomorphic anomaly equation, modularity and boundary conditions provided by the perturbative terms as well as by the gap condition at the conifold are sufficient to solve the generalized theory in the above cases. In particular we use the method to solve the topological string for the general Omega backgrounds on non-compact toric Calabi-Yau spaces. The conifold boundary condition follows from that the N=2 Schwinger-Loop calculation with BPS states coupled to a self-dual and an anti-self-dual field strength. We calculate such BPS states also for the decompactification limit of Calabi-Yau spaces with regular K3 fibrations and half K3s embedded in Calabi-Yau backgrounds., Comment: 37 pages, 2 pstex figures

We study the discovery potential of string resonances decaying to $t\bar{t}$ final state at the LHC. We point out that top quark pair production is a promising and an advantageous channel for studying such resonances, due to their low Standard Model background and unique kinematics. We study the invariant mass distribution and angular dependence of the top pair production cross section via exchanges of string resonances. The mass ratios of these resonances and the unusual angular distribution may help identify their fundamental properties and distinguish them from other new physics. We find that string resonances for a string scale below 4 TeV can be detected via the $t\bar{t}$ channel, either from reconstructing the $t\bar{t}$ semi-leptonic decay or recent techniques in identifying highly boosted tops., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures

We compute the large scalar four-point correlation functions in general single field inflation models, where the inflaton Lagrangian is an arbitrary function of the inflaton and its first derivative. We find that the leading order trispectra have four different shapes determined by three parameters. We study features in these shapes that can be used to distinguish among themselves, and between them and the trispectra of the local form. For the purpose of data analyses, we give two simple representative forms for these "equilateral trispectra". We calculate the gravitational corrections to the effective action of N=2 SU(2) Seiberg-Witten theory with matter using modularity, the holomorphic anomaly equation and expected behavior at the boundaries of the moduli space. As in pure gauge theory we show that the gap condition at the dyon singularities completely fixes the gravitational corrections. We discuss the behavior of the gravitational corrections at the conformal points. We analyze the trajectories for multifield DBI inflation, which can arise in brane inflation models, and show that the trajectories are the same as in typical slow roll inflation. We calculate the power spectrum and find that the higher derivative terms of the DBI action lead to a suppression of the contribution from the isocurvature perturbations. We study five-dimensional black holes obtained by compactifying M theory on Calabi-Yau threefolds. Recent progress in solving topological string theory on compact, one-parameter models allows us to test numerically various conjectures about these black holes. We give convincing evidence that a microscopic description based on Gopakumar-Vafa invariants accounts correctly for their macroscopic entropy, and we check that highly nontrivial cancellations -which seem necessary to resolve the so-called entropy enigma in the OSV conjecture- do in fact occur. We also study analytically small 5d black holes obtained by wrapping M2 branes in the fiber of K3 fibrations. By using heterotic/type II duality we obtain exact formulae for the microscopic degeneracies in various geometries, and we compute their asymptotic expansion for large charges., Comment: 42 pages, 20 eps figures, small corrections

The topological string partition function Z=exp(lambda^{2g-2} F_g) is calculated on a compact Calabi-Yau M. The F_g fulfill the holomorphic anomaly equations, which imply that Z transforms as a wave function on the symplectic space H^3(M,Z). This defines it everywhere in the moduli space of M along with preferred local coordinates. Modular properties of the sections F_g as well as local constraints from the 4d effective action allow us to fix Z to a large extend. We compute the leading order contribution to the four-point function of the primordial curvature perturbation in a class of single field models where the inflationary Lagrangian is a general function of the inflaton and its first derivative. This class of models includes string motivated inflationary models such as DBI inflation. We find that the trispectrum for some range of parameters could potentially be observed in future experiments. Moreover, the trispectrum can distinguish DBI inflation from other inflation models with large non-Gaussianities which typically have a similar bispectrum. We use the holomorphic anomaly equation to solve the gravitational corrections to Seiberg-Witten theory and a two-cut matrix model, which is related by the Dijkgraaf-Vafa conjecture to the topological B-model on a local Calabi-Yau manifold. In both cases we construct propagators that give a recursive solution in the genus modulo a holomorphic ambiguity. In the case of Seiberg-Witten theory the gravitational corrections can be expressed in closed form as quasimodular functions of Gamma(2). In the matrix model we fix the holomorphic ambiguity up to genus two. We perform a general study of primordial scalar non-Gaussianities in single field inflationary models in Einstein gravity. We consider models where the inflaton Lagrangian is an arbitrary function of the scalar field and its first derivative, and the sound speed is arbitrary. We find that under reasonable assumptions, the non-Gaussianity is completely determined by 5 parameters. In special limits of the parameter space, one finds distinctive ``shapes'' of the non-Gaussianity. In models with a small sound speed, several of these shapes would become potentially observable in the near future. The exact FZZT brane partition function for topological gravity with matter is computed using the dual two-matrix model. We show how the effective theory of open strings on a stack of FZZT branes is described by the generalized Kontsevich matrix integral, extending the earlier result for pure topological gravity. Using the well-known relation between the Kontsevich integral and a certain shift in the closed-string background, we conclude that these models exhibit open/closed string duality explicitly. Just as in pure topological gravity, the unphysical sheets of the classical FZZT moduli space are eliminated in the exact answer. Four-dimensional supersymmetric SU(N) Yang-Mills theory on a sphere has highly charged baryon-like states built from anti-symmetric combinations of the adjoint scalars. We show that these states, which are equivalently described as holes in a free fermi sea of a reduced matrix model, are D-branes. Their excitations are stringlike and effectively realize Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions in various directions. The low energy brane dynamics should realize an emergent gauge theory that is local on a new space. We show that the Gauss' Law associated to this emergent gauge symmetry appears from combinatorial identities relating the stringy excitations. Although these excitations are not BPS, they can be near-BPS and we can hope to study them in perturbation theory. This thesis consists of two parts. In the first part we study some topics in $\mathcal{N}=1$ supersymmeric gauge theory and the relation to matrix models. We review the relevant non-perturbative techniques for computing effective superpotential, such as Seiberg-Witten curve. Then we review the proposal of Dijkgraaf and Vafa that relates the glueball superpotentials to the computation in matrix models. We then consider a case of multi-trace superpotential. We perform the perturbative computation of glueball superpotential in this case and explain the subtlety in identifying the glueball superfield. We also use these techniques to study phases of $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theory with flavors. In the second part we study topics in AdS/CFT correspondence and its plane wave limit. We review the plane wave geometry and BMN operators that corresponding to string modes. Then we study string interactions in the case of a highly curved plane wave background, and demonstrate the agreements between calculations of string interaction amplitudes in the two dual theories. Finally we study D3-brane giant gravitons and open string attached to them. We explore the phases of N = 1 supersymmetric U(N) gauge theories with fundamental matter that arise as deformations of N = 2 SQCD by the addition of a superpotential for the adjoint chiral multiplet. As the parameters in the superpotential are varied, the vacua of this theory sweep out various branches, which in some cases have multiple semiclassical limits. In such limits, we recover the vacua of various product gauge group theories, with flavors charged under some group factors. We describe in detail the structure of the vacua in both classical and quantum regimes, and develop general techniques such as an addition and a multiplication map which relate vacua of different gauge theories. We consider N = 1 supersymmetric U(N) field theories in four dimensions with adjoint chiral matter and a multi-trace tree-level superpotential. We show that the computation of the effective action as a function of the glueball superfield localizes to computing matrix integrals. Unlike the single-trace case, holomorphy and symmetries do not forbid non-planar contributions. Nevertheless, only a special subset of the planar diagrams contributes to the exact result. Some of the data of this subset can be computed from the large-N limit of an associated multi-trace Matrix model. However, the prescription differs in important respects from that of Dijkgraaf and Vafa for single-trace superpotentials in that the field theory effective action is not the derivative of a multi-trace matrix model free energy. The basic subtlety involves the correct identification of the field theory glueball as a variable in the Matrix model, as we show via an auxiliary construction involving a single-trace matrix model with additional singlet fields which are integrated out to compute the multi-trace results. Along the way we also describe a general technique for computing the large-N limits of multi-trace Matrix models and raise the challenge of finding the field theories whose effective actions they may compute. Since our models can be treated as N = 1 deformations of pure N =2 gauge theory, we show that the effective superpotential that we compute also follows from the N = 2 Seiberg-Witten solution. We consider non-planar contributions to the correlation functions of BMN operators in free N = 4 super Yang Mills theory. We recalculate these non-planar contributions from a different kind of diagram and find some exact agreements. The vertices of these diagrams are represented by free planar three point functions, thus our calculations provide some interesting identities for correlation functions of BMN operators in N = 4 super Yang Mills theory. These diagrams look very much like loop diagrams in a second quantized string field theory, thus these identities could possibly be interpreted as natural consequences of the pp-wave/CFT correspondence., Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures.
