Search

Compact device models play a significant role in connecting device technology and circuit design. BSIM-CMG and BSIM-IMG are industry standard compact models suited for the FinFET and UTBB technologies, respectively. Its surface potential based modeling framework and symmetry preserving properties make them suitable for both analog/RF and digital design. In the era of artificial intelligence / deep learning, compact models further enhanced our ability to explore RRAM and other NVM-based neuromorphic circuits. We have demonstrated simulation of RRAM neuromorphic circuits with Verilog-A based compact model at NCKU. We present results derived from four stellar occultations by the plutino object (208996) 2003~AZ$_{84}$, detected at January 8, 2011 (single-chord event), February 3, 2012 (multi-chord), December 2, 2013 (single-chord) and November 15, 2014 (multi-chord). Our observations rule out an oblate spheroid solution for 2003~AZ$_{84}$'s shape. Instead, assuming hydrostatic equilibrium, we find that a Jacobi triaxial solution with semi axes $(470 \pm 20) \times (383 \pm 10) \times (245 \pm 8)$~km % axis ratios $b/a= 0.82 \pm 0.05$ and $c/a= 0.52 \pm 0.02$, can better account for all our occultation observations. Combining these dimensions with the rotation period of the body (6.75~h) and the amplitude of its rotation light curve, we derive a density $\rho=0.87 \pm 0.01$~g~cm$^{-3}$ a geometric albedo $p_V= 0.097 \pm 0.009$. A grazing chord observed during the 2014 occultation reveals a topographic feature along 2003~AZ$_{84}$'s limb, that can be interpreted as an abrupt chasm of width $\sim 23$~km and depth $> 8$~km or a smooth depression of width $\sim 80$~km and depth $\sim 13$~km (or an intermediate feature between those two extremes).

We present a detailed study of V899 Mon (a new member in the FUors/EXors family of young low-mass stars undergoing outburst), based on our long-term monitoring of the source starting from November 2009 to April 2015. Our optical and near-infrared photometric and spectroscopic monitoring recorded the source transitioning from its first outburst to a short duration quiescence phase ($<$ 1 year), and then returning to a second outburst. We report here the evolution of the outflows from inner region of the disk as the accretion rate evolved in various epochs. Our high resolution (R$\sim$37000) optical spectrum could resolve interesting clumpy structures in the outflow traced by various lines. Change in far-infrared flux was also detected between two outburst epochs. Based on our observations we constrained various stellar and envelope parameters of V899 Mon, as well as the kinematics of its accretion and outflow. The photometric and spectroscopic properties of this source fall between classical FUors and EXors. Our investigation of V899 Mon hints instability associated with magnetospheric accretion to be the physical cause of sudden short duration pause of outburst in 2011. We present results of our time variability studies of Mg II and Al III absorption lines in a sample of 22 Low Ionization Broad Absorption Line QSOs (LoBAL QSOs) at 0.2 <= zem <= 2.1 using the 2m telescope at IUCAA Girawali Observatory over a time-scale of 10 days to 7.69 years in the QSO's rest frame. Spectra are analysed in conjunction with photometric light curves from Catalina Real-Time Transient Survey. Long time-scale (i.e >= 1 year) absorption line variability is seen in 8 cases (36% systems) while only 4 of them (i.e 18% systems) show variability over short time-scales (i.e < 1 year). We notice a tendency of highly variable LoBAL QSOs to have high ejection velocity, low equivalent width and low redshift. The detection rate of variability in LoBAL QSOs showing Fe fine-structure lines (FeLoBAL QSOs) is less than that seen in non-Fe LoBAL QSOs. Absorption line variability is more frequently detected in QSOs having continuum dominated by Fe emission lines compared to rest of the QSOs. Confirming these trends with a bigger sample will give vital clues for understanding the physical distinction between different BAL QSO sub-classes. We correlate the absorption line variability with various parameters derived from continuum light curves and find no clear correlation between continuum flux and absorption line variabilities. However, sources with large absorption line variability also show large variability in their light curves. We also see appearance/disappearance of absorption components in 2 cases and clear indications for profile variations in 4 cases. We present a detailed study of McNeil's nebula (V1647 Ori) in its ongoing outburst phase starting from September 2008 to March 2013. Our 124 nights of photometric observations were carried out in optical V, R, I and near-infrared J, H, K bands, and 59 nights of medium resolution spectroscopic observations were done in 5200 - 9000 Ang wavelength range. All observations were carried out with 2-m Himalayan Chandra Telescope and 2-m IUCAA Girawali Telescope. Our observations show that over last four and a half years, V1647 Ori and the region C near Herbig-Haro object, HH 22A, have been undergoing a slow dimming at a rate of ~0.04 mag/yr and ~0.05 mag/yr respectively in R-band, which is 6 times slower than the rate during similar stage of V1647 Ori in 2003 outburst. We detected change in flux distribution over the reflection nebula implying changes in circumstellar matter distribution between 2003 and 2008 outbursts. Apart from steady wind of velocity ~350 km/s we detected two episodic magnetic reconnection driven winds. Forbidden [O I] 6300 Ang and [Fe II] 7155 Ang lines were also detected implying shock regions probably from jets. We tried to explain the outburst timescales of V1647 Ori using the standard models of FUors kind of outburst and found that pure thermal instability models like Bell & Lin (1994) cannot explain the variations in timescales. In the framework of various instability models we conclude that one possible reason for sudden ending of 2003 outburst in 2005 November was due to a low density region or gap in the inner region (~ 1 AU) of the disc., Comment: 30 pages, 19 figures, 4 tables. The loss tangent of medium, low and very low loss dielectric substrates (including the Rogers RT Duroid 5880 and 6010.2, LaAlO3, (La, Sr)(Al, Ta)O3, MgO and Quartz) was measured at varying temperatures with two TE01{\delta} dielectric resonators to ensure verification of the tests. The accuracy of the measurements has been researched and discussed for split post dielectric resonator (SPDR) in a copper enclosure and a single post dielectric resonator (SuPDR) in a superconducting enclosure in the temperature range from 15K to 300 K., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures

Yttrium Vanadate (YVO4) is a birefringent crystal material used in optical isolators and circulators with potentials for application in cryogenic microwave devices. As microwave properties of the YVO4 are not known, we measured the complex permittivity at the frequency of 25 GHz, using the Hakki-Coleman dielectric resonator technique in the temperature range from 13 K to 80 K. The real part of relative permittivity of YVO4 turned out to be similar to that of Sapphire - one of popular dielectric materials, used at microwave frequencies. The measured loss tangent tang {\delta} of the YVO4 was of the order of 10^(-6) at cryogenic temperatures. Surface resistance of HTS films is typically measured using Sapphire dielectric rod resonators enclosed in a copper cavity. In this paper we present surface resistance measurements of YBa2Cu3O7-{\delta} films using Strontium Lanthanum Aluminate (SLAO) at a resonant frequency of 18.2 GHz. We have performed the error analysis of the cavity loaded with SLAO dielectric rod and also verification measurements using two Sapphire (Al2O3) rod resonators operating at resonant frequencies of 24.6 GHz and 10 GHz respectively. Good agreement between the values of Rs of two sets of YBa2Cu3O7-{\delta} films measured using the SLAO and the Sapphire dielectrics has been obtained after a frequency scaling of Rs was applied. Using different dielectric rods of the same size in the same cavity for measurements of Rs of HTS films, it is feasible to do microwave characterization of the same films at differing frequencies., Comment: 4 pages, 10 figures

A split post dielectric resonator in a copper enclosure and a single post dielectric resonator in a cavity with superconducting end-plates have been constructed and used for the complex permittivity measurements of single crystal substrates. (La,Sr)(Al,Ta)O3, LaAlO3, MgO and quartz substrates have been measured at temperatures from 20 K to 300 K in the split post resonator and from 15 K to 80 K in the single post resonator. The TE01delta mode resonant frequencies and unloaded Qo-factors of the empty resonators at temperature of 20 K were: 9.952 GHz and 25,000 for the split post resonator and 10.808 GHz and 240,000 for the single post resonator respectively., Comment: 4 pages, 8 figures, 1 table

Properties of calcium fluoride (CaF2) have been well researched at UV, visible and IR range of frequencies, but not at ultra high frequencies. In this work we report the loss tangent and the real part of relative permittivity of CaF2, measured in the temperatures range of 15 - 81 K and the frequency of 29.25 GHz. The loss tangent and the real part of relative permittivity were determined by measurements of the resonant frequency and the Qo - factor of a TE011 mode cylindrical copper cavity with superconducting plates containing the sample under test. The measured real part of relative permittivity of CaF2 was found to change from 6.484 to 6.505, and the loss tangent from 3.1x10^(-6) to 22.7x10^(-6), when the temperature was varied from 15 to 81 K. Accurate data of complex permittivity of dielectric substrates are needed for efficient design of HTS microwave planar circuits. We have tested MgO substrates from three different manufacturing batches using a dielectric resonator with superconducting parts recently developed for precise microwave characterization of laminar dielectrics at cryogenic temperatures. The measurement fixture has been fabricated using a SrLaAlO3 post dielectric resonator with DyBa2Cu3O7 end plates and silver-plated copper sidewalls to achieve the resolution of loss tangent measurements of 2 {\times} 10-6. The tested MgO substrates exhibited the average relative permittivity of 9.63 and tan {\delta} from 3.7 {\times} 10-7 to 2 {\times} 10-5 at frequency of 10.5 GHz in the temperature range from 14 to 80 K., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

A comparative study of unloaded Q-factor measurements of a TE011 mode sapphire dielectric resonator with unloaded Q-factor value of 731,000 at a frequency of 10 GHz and temperature of 65 K using two best Q-factor measurement methods are presented. The Transmission (TMQF) and Reflection methods are based on relevant multi-frequency S-parameter measurements and circle fitting procedures to compute the unloaded Q-factor of the resonator. Microwave properties of High Temperature Superconductors (HTS) exhibit dependence on RF power levels. Effects of nonlinear phenomena causing this dependence can be modelled using lumped element circuits. Several RLC circuits to model the surface impedance of HTS were investigated (with equations expressing transmitted power derived) and assessed. Linear, quadratic and exponential dependences of surface resistance RS and inductance LS on the RF power for the model chosen as the best have been examined and used in simulations of electromagnetic responses of superconducting films in a Hakki-Coleman dielectric resonator., Comment: 4 pages, 7 figures

The FU Orionis (FUor) or EX Orionis (EXor) phenomenon has attracted increasing attention in recent years and is now accepted as a crucial element in the early evolution of low-mass stars. FUor and EXor eruptions of young stellar objects (YSOs) are caused by strongly enhanced accretion from the surrounding disk. FUors display optical outbursts of $\sim$ 4 mag or more and last for several decades, whereas EXors show smaller outbursts ($\Delta$m $\sim$ 2 - 3 mag) that last from a few months to a few years and may occur repeatedly. Therefore, FUor/EXor eruptions represent a rare but very important phenomenon in early stellar evolution, during which a young low-mass YSO brightens by up to several optical magnitudes. Hence, long-term observations of this class of eruptive variable are important to design theoretical models of low-mass star formation. We study the time variability of five Fe Low ionization Broad Absorption Line (FeLoBAL) QSOs using repeated spectroscopic observations with the 2m telescope at IUCAA Girawali observatory (IGO) spanning an interval of upto 10 years. We report a dramatic variation in Al III and Fe III fine-structure lines in the spectra of SDSS J221511.93-004549.9 (z_em ~ 1.478). However, there is no such strong variability shown by the C IV absorption. This source is known to be unusual with (i) the continuum emission dominated by Fe emission lines, (ii) Fe III absorption being stronger than Fe II and (iii) the apparent ratio of Fe III UV 48 to Fe III UV 34 absorption suggesting an inverted population ratio. This is the first reported detection of time variability in the Fe III fine-structure lines in QSO spectra. There is a strong reduction in the absorption strength of these lines between year 2000 and 2008. Using the template fitting techniques, we show that the apparent inversion of strength of UV lines could be related to the complex spectral energy distribution of this QSO. The observed variability can be related to change in the ionization state of the gas or due to transverse motion of this absorbing gas. The shortest variability timescale of Al III line gives a lower limit on the electron density of the absorbing gas as n_e >= 1.1 x 10^4 cm^-3. The remaining 4 FeLoBALs do not show any changes beyond the measurement uncertainties either in optical depth or in the velocity structure. We present the long-term photometric light curve for all of our sources. We present results on the star-formation activity of an optically obscured region containing an embedded cluster (S255-IR) and molecular gas between two evolved HII regions S255 and S257. We have studied the complex using optical, near-infrared (NIR) imaging, optical spectroscopy and radio continnum mapping at 15 GHz, along with Spitzer-IRAC results. It is found that the main exciting sources of the evolved HII regions S255 and S257 and the compact HII regions associated with S255-IR are of O9.5 - B3 V nature, consistent with previous observations. Our NIR observations reveal 109 likely young stellar object (YSO) candidates in an area of ~ 4'.9 x 4'.9 centered on S255-IR, which include 69 new YSO candidates. Our observations increased the number of previously identified YSOs in this region by 32%. To see the global star formation, we constructed the V-I/V diagram for 51 optically identified IRAC YSOs in an area of ~ 13' x 13' centered on S255-IR. We suggest that these YSOs have an approximate age between 0.1 - 4 Myr, indicating a non-coeval star formation. Using spectral energy distribution models, we constrained physical properties and evolutionary status of 31 and 16 YSO candidates outside and inside the gas ridge, respectively. The models suggest that the sources associated within the gas ridge are of younger population (mean age ~ 1.2 Myr) than the sources outside the gas ridge (mean age ~ 2.5 Myr). The positions of the young sources inside the gas ridge at the interface of the HII regions S255 and S257, favor a site of induced star formation., Comment: 46 pages, 14 figures, 5 tables. We report on the discovery and observations of the extremely luminous optical transient CSS100217:102913+404220 (CSS100217 hereafter). Spectroscopic observations show this transient was coincident with a galaxy at redshift z=0.147, and reached an apparent magnitude of V ~ 16.3. After correcting for foreground Galactic extinction we determine the absolute magnitude to be M_V =-22.7 approximately 45 days after maximum light. Based on our unfiltered optical photometry the peak optical emission was L = 1.3 x 10^45 erg s^-1, and over a period of 287 rest-frame days had an integrated bolometric luminosity of 1.2 x 10^52 erg. Analysis of the pre-outburst SDSS spectrum of the source shows features consistent with a Narrow-line Seyfert1 (NLS1) galaxy. High-resolution HST and Keck followup observations show the event occurred within 150pc of nucleus of the galaxy, suggesting a possible link to the active nuclear region. However, the rapid outburst along with photometric and spectroscopic evolution are much more consistent with a luminous supernova. Line diagnostics suggest that the host galaxy is undergoing significant star formation. We use extensive follow-up of the event along with archival CSS and SDSS data to investigate the three most likely sources of such an event; 1) an extremely luminous supernova; 2) the tidal disruption of a star by the massive nuclear black hole; 3) variability of the central AGN. We find that CSS100217 was likely an extremely luminous type IIn supernova that occurred within range of the narrow-line region of an AGN. We discuss how similar events may have been missed in past supernova surveys because of confusion with AGN activity., Comment: submitted to ApJ

The present research scholars are having keen interest in doing their research activities in the area of Data mining all over the world. Especially, [13]Mining Image data is the one of the essential features in this present scenario since image data plays vital role in every aspect of the system such as business for marketing, hospital for surgery, engineering for construction, Web for publication and so on. The other area in the Image mining system is the Content-Based Image Retrieval (CBIR) which performs retrieval based on the similarity defined in terms of extracted features with more objectiveness. The drawback in CBIR is the features of the query image alone are considered. Hence, a new technique called Image retrieval based on optimum clusters is proposed for improving user interaction with image retrieval systems by fully exploiting the similarity information. The index is created by describing the images according to their color characteristics, with compact feature vectors, that represent typical color distributions [12].

We present a sample of 46 [OIII]-emitting galaxies at z<0.8 detected in the fibre spectra of quasars from the SDSS-DR7 through an automatic search procedure. We also detect [OII] and Hb emission lines from most of these galaxies in the SDSS spectra. We study both the emission and absorption properties of a sub-sample of 17 galaxies in the redshift range z=0.4-0.7, where MgII lines are covered by the SDSS spectra. The measured lower-limits on the star-formation rates of these galaxies are in the range 0.2-20 M_sun/yr. The emission line luminosities and (O/H) metallicities from R23 measured in this sample are similar to what is found in normal galaxies at these redshifts. Thus, this constitutes a unique sample of intermediate redshift star-forming galaxies where we can study the QSO absorber - galaxy connection. Strong MgII (W>1A) as well as MgI absorption lines are detected in the QSO spectra at the redshift of most of these galaxies. Strong FeII (W>1A) absorption lines are also generally detected whenever the appropriate wavelength ranges are covered. This suggests that most of these systems could be bona-fide Damped Lyman-alpha systems. We investigate various possible relations between the MgII rest equivalent widths and the emission line properties. We find a possible (2 sigma) correlation between the emission-line metallicity of the galaxies and the MgII rest equivalent width of the absorbers [truncated]., Comment: 15 pages, 11 figures, 5 tables. accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report long-slit spectroscopic observations of SDSS J092712+294344 carried-out at the recently commissioned 2m telescope in IUCAA Girawali Observatory, India. This AGN-like source is known to feature three sets of emission lines at zem = 0.6972, 0.7020 and 0.7128. Different scenarios such as a recoiling black hole after asymmetric emission of gravitational waves, binary black holes and possible merging systems are proposed for this object. We test these scenarios by comparing our spectra with that from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), obtained 4 years prior to our observations. Comparing the redshifts of [OIII]4960,5008 we put a 3 sigma limit on the relative acceleration to be less than 32 km s^-1 yr^-1 between different emitting regions. Using the 2D spectra obtained at different position angles we show that the [OIII]5008 line from the zem = 0.7128 component is extended beyond the spectral point spread function. We infer the linear extent of this line emitting region is ~8 kpc. We also find a tentative evidence for an offset between the centroid of the [OIII]5008 line at zem = 0.7128 and the QSO trace when the slit is aligned at a position angle of 299 degrees. This corresponds to the zem = 0.7128 system being at an impact parameter of ~1 kpc with respect to the zem = 0.6972 in the north west direction. Based on our observations we conclude that the binary black hole model is most unlikely. We present observations of the afterglow of GRB 080319B at optical, mm and radio frequencies from a few hours to 67 days after the burst. Present observations along with other published multi-wavelength data have been used to study the light-curves and spectral energy distributions of the burst afterglow. The nature of this brightest cosmic explosion has been explored based on the observed properties and it's comparison with the afterglow models. Our results show that the observed features of the afterglow fits equally good with the Inter Stellar Matter and the Stellar Wind density profiles of the circum-burst medium. In case of both density profiles, location of the maximum synchrotron frequency $\nu_m$ is below optical and the value of cooling break frequency $\nu_c$ is below $X-$rays, $\sim 10^{4}$s after the burst. Also, the derived value of the Lorentz factor at the time of naked eye brightness is $\sim 300$ with the corresponding blast wave size of $\sim 10^{18}$ cm. Context: L-type ultra-cool dwarfs and brown dwarfs have cloudy atmospheres that could host weather-like phenomena. The detection of photometric or spectral variability would provide insight into unresolved atmospheric heterogeneities, such as holes in a global cloud deck. Aims: It has been proposed that growth of heterogeneities in the global cloud deck may account for the L- to T-type transition as brown dwarf photospheres evolve from cloudy to clear conditions. Such a mechanism is compatible with variability. We searched for variability in the spectra of five L6 to T6 brown dwarfs in order to test this hypothesis. Methods: We obtained spectroscopic time series using VLT/ISAAC, over 0.99-1.13um, and IRTF/SpeX for two of our targets, in J, H and K bands. We search for statistically variable lines and correlation between those. Results: High spectral-frequency variations are seen in some objects, but these detections are marginal and need to be confirmed. We find no evidence for large amplitude variations in spectral morphology and we place firm upper limits of 2 to 3% on broad-band variability, on the time scale of a few hours. The T2 transition brown dwarf SDSS J1254-0122 shows numerous variable features, but a secure variability diagnosis would require further observations. Conclusions: Assuming that any variability arises from the rotation of patterns of large-scale clear and cloudy regions across the surface, we find that the typical physical scale of cloud cover disruption should be smaller than 5-8% of the disk area for four of our targets. AIMS. A recent catalogue by Flesch & Hardcastle presents two major anomalies in the spatial distribution of QSO candidates: i/ an apparent excess of such objects near bright galaxies, and ii/ an excess of very bright QSO candidates compared to random background expectations in several regions of the sky. Because anyone of these anomalies would be relevant in a cosmological context, we carried out an extensive analysis of the probabilities quoted in that catalogue. METHODS. We determine the nature and redshift of a subsample of 30 sources in that catalogue by analysing their optical spectra (another 11 candidates were identified from existing public databases). These have allowed us to statistically check the reliability of the probabilities QSO status quoted by Flesch & Hardcastle for their candidates. RESULTS. Only 12 of the 41 candidates turned out QSOs (7 of which have been identified here for the first time). CONCLUSIONS. The probabilities of the QSOs' being the candidates given by Flesch & Hardcastle are overestimated for m_B<17 and for objects projected near (<1 arcmin) bright galaxies. We report results of multiband optical monitoring of two well known blazars, S5 0716+714 and BL Lacertae, carried out in 1996 and 2000-01 with an aim to study optical variations on time scales from minutes to hours and longer.The light curves were derived relative to comparison stars present on the CCD frames. Night to night flux variations of >0.1 mag were observed in S5 0716+714 during a campaign of ~2 weeks in 1996.A good correlation between the lightcurves in different optical bands was found for both inter-night and intra-night observations. Two prominent events of intra-night optical variability were detected in S5 0716+714.Each of these rapidly varying segments of the lightcurves trace an exponential flux profile whose rate of variation is the same in both cases. Our long-term monitoring data of S5 0716+714 showed a distinct flare around JD 2451875 which can be identified in the BVRI bands.This flare coincides with the brightest phase recorded during 1994-2001 in the long-term lightcurves reported by Raiteri et al.(2003). No evidence for the bluer when brighter trend was noticed on inter-night and intra-night time scales. On the other hand, our nearly simultaneous multiband observations of BL Lacertae in October 2001 showed flux variations that were not achromatic. This blazar was found to become bluer when brighter on intra-night time scales and there is a hint of the same trend on inter-night time scales. Based on five nights of observations during a week, BL Lacertae showed a peak night-to-night variability of ~0.6 mag in B. Thus, we found that the present observations of the two blazars, reveal a contrasting behaviour in terms of the dependence of spectral hardening with increasing brightness, at least on intra-night, and possibly also on inter-night, time scales., Comment: 11 pages with 10 figures,uses mn2e.cls, Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Having ruled out the possibility that stellar objects are the main contributor of the dark matter embedding galaxies, microlensing experiments cannot exclude the hypothesis that a significant fraction of the Milky Way dark halo might be made of MACHOs with masses in the range $0.5-0.8 \msun$. Ancient white dwarfs are generally considered the most plausible candidates for such MACHOs. We report the results of a search for such white dwarfs in a proper motion survey covering a 0.16 sqd field at three epochs at high galactic latitude, and 0.938 sqd at two epochs at intermediate galactic latitude (VIRMOS survey), using the CFH telescope. Both surveys are complete to I = 23, with detection efficiency fading to 0 at I = 24.2. Proper motion data are suitable to separate unambiguously halo white dwarfs identified by belonging to a non rotating system. No candidates were found within the colour-magnitude-proper motion volume where such objects can be safely discriminated from any standard population as well as from possible artefacts. In the same volume, we estimate the maximum white dwarf halo fraction compatible with this observation at different significance levels if the halo is at least 14 gigayears old and under different ad hoc initial mass functions. Our data alone rules out a halo fraction greater than 14% at 95% confidence level. Combined with two previous investigations exploring comparable volumes pushes the limit below 4 % (95% confidence level) or below 1.3% (64% confidence), this implies that if baryonic dark matter is present in galaxy halos, it is not, or it is only marginally in the form of faint hydrogen white dwarfs., Comment: accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics (19-05-2004)

We present multiwavelength observations of a gamma-ray burst detected by INTEGRAL (GRB 030227) between 5.3 hours and ~1.7 days after the event. Here we report the discovery of a dim optical afterglow (OA) that would not have been detected by many previous searches due to its faintess (R~23). This OA was seen to decline following a power law decay with index Alpha_R= -0.95 +/- 0.16. The spectral index Beta_opt/NIR yielded -1.25 +/- 0.14. These values may be explained by a relativistic expansion of a fireball (with p = 2.0) in the cooling regime. (Abridged) We report on observations of the optical and NIR afterglow of GRB020405. Ground-based optical observations started about 1 day after the GRB and spanned a period of ~10 days; archival HST data extended the coverage up to 70 days after the GRB. We report the first detection of the afterglow in NIR bands. The detection of emission lines in the optical spectrum indicates that the GRB is located at z = 0.691. Absorptions are also detected at z = 0.691 and at z = 0.472. The latter system is likely caused by clouds in a galaxy located 2 arcsec southwest of the GRB host. Hence, for the first time, the galaxy responsible for an intervening absorption system in the spectrum of a GRB afterglow is identified. Optical and NIR photometry indicates that the decay in all bands follows a single power law of index alpha = 1.54. The late-epoch VLT and HST points lie above the extrapolation of this power law, so that a plateau is apparent in the VRIJ light curves at 10-20 days after the GRB. The light curves at epochs later than day ~20 after the GRB are consistent with a power-law decay with index alphaprime = 1.85. We suggest that this deviation can be modeled with a SN having the same temporal profile as SN2002ap, but 1.3 mag brighter at peak, and located at the GRB redshift. Alternatively, a shock re-energization may be responsible for the rebrightening. A polarimetric R-band measurement shows that the afterglow is polarized, with P = 1.5 % and theta = 172 degrees. Optical-NIR spectral flux distributions show a change of slope across the J band which we interpret as due to the presence of nu_c. The analysis of the multiwavelength spectrum within the fireball model suggests that a population of relativistic electrons produces the optical-NIR emission via synchrotron in an adiabatically expanding blastwave, and the X-rays via IC., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication on A&A, main journal

The CCD magnitudes in Johnson $B,V$ and Cousins $R$ and $I$ photometric passbands are determined for the bright long duration GRB 021004 afterglow from 2002 October 4 to 16 starting $\sim$ 3 hours after the $\gamma-$ray burst. Light curves of the afterglow emission in $B$,$V$,$R$ and $I$ passbands are obtained by combining these measurements with other published data. The earliest optical emission appears to originate in a revese shock. Flux decay of the afterglow shows a very uncommon variation relative to other well-observed GRBs. Rapid light variations, especially during early times ($\Delta t < 2$ days) is superposed on an underlying broken power law decay typical of a jetted afterglow. The flux decay constants at early and late times derived from least square fits to the light curve are $0.99\pm0.05$ and $2.0\pm0.2$ respectively, with a jet break at around 7 day. Comparison with a standard fireball model indicates a total extinction of $E(B-V)=0.20$ mag in the direction of the burst. Our low-resolution spectra corrected for this extinction provide a spectral slope $\beta = 0.6\pm0.02$. This value and the flux decay constants agree well with the electron energy index $p\sim 2.27$ used in the model. The derived jet opening angle of about $7^{\circ}$ implies a total emitted gamma-ray energy $E_{\gamma} = 3.5\times10^{50}$ erg at a cosmological distance of about 20 Gpc. We report photometric observations of the optical afterglow of GRB010222 in V,R and I passbands carried out at UPSO, Naini Tal between 22-27 Feb 2001. We determine CCD Johnson BV and Cousins RI photometric magnitudes for 31 stars in the field of GRB010222 and use them to calibrate our measurements as well as other published BVRI photometric magnitudes of GRB010222 afterglow. We construct the light curve in V,R,I passbands and from a broken power-law fit determine the decay indices of 0.74+/-0.05 and 1.35+/-0.04 before and after the break at 0.7 days. Using reported X-ray flux measurements at 0.35 and 9.13 days after the burst we determine X-ray to opt/IR spectral index of 0.61+/-0.02 and 0.75+/-0.02 on these two days. We also report upper limits to the radio flux obtained from the RATAN-600 telescope and the GMRT, and millimeter-wave upper limits obtained from the Plateau de Bure Millimeter interferometer. We argue that the synchrotron cooling frequency is below the optical band for most of the observing period. Observations of the extraordinarily bright optical afterglow (OA) of GRB 991208 started 2.1 d after the event. The flux decay constant of the OA in the R-band is -2.30 +/- 0.07 up to 5 d, which is very likely due to the jet effect, and after that it is followed by a much steeper decay with constant -3.2 +/- 0.2, the fastest one ever seen in a GRB OA. A negative detection in several all-sky films taken simultaneously to the event implies either a previous additional break prior to 2 d after the occurrence of the GRB (as expected from the jet effect). The existence of a second break might indicate a steepening in the electron spectrum or the superposition of two events. Once the afterglow emission vanished, contribution of a bright underlying SN is found, but the light curve is not sufficiently well sampled to rule out a dust echo explanation. Our determination of z = 0.706 indicates that GRB 991208 is at 3.7 Gpc, implying an isotropic energy release of 1.15 x 10E53 erg which may be relaxed by beaming by a factor > 100. Precise astrometry indicates that the GRB coincides within 0.2" with the host galaxy, thus given support to a massive star origin. The absolute magnitude is M_B = -18.2, well below the knee of the galaxy luminosity function and we derive a star-forming rate of 11.5 +/- 7.1 Mo/yr. The quasi-simultaneous broad-band photometric spectral energy distribution of the afterglow is determined 3.5 day after the burst (Dec 12.0) implying a cooling frequency below the optical band, i.e. supporting a jet model with p = -2.30 as the index of the power-law electron distribution., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics, 9 pages, 6 figures (Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 have been updated)

CCD Johnsons BV and Cousins RI photometric magnitudes are determined for 20 stars in the field of GRB 000926. Using them as calibrators, B and R band light curves are constructed of the afterglow from ours and other published observations. They show a steepening of the flux decay, from a decay constant of 1.4+/-0.1 to 2.6+/-0.06 at about 1.7 days after the burst. Attributing this break to the onset of sideways expansion of a jet-like ejecta, we estimate an initial jet opening angle of ~0.14 radian, and a burst energy of ~10^51 erg. We construct the X-ray-optical-near infrared spectrum of the afterglow and derive a spectral index of ~ -0.9. From the spectrum we also estimate that the source has a rather large intrinsic extinction, amounting to E(B-V)=0.36+/-0.02., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Bull. Astr. The CCD magnitudes in Johnson V and Cousins R and I photometric passbands are determined for GRB 000301C afterglow starting ~ 1.5 day after the gamma-ray burst. In fact we provide the earliest optical observations for this burst. Light curves of the afterglow emissions in U, B, V, R, I, J and K' passbands are obtained by combining the present measurements with the published data. Flux decay shows a very uncommon variation relative to other well observed GRBs. Overall, there is a steepening of the optical and near-infrared flux decay caused by a geometric and sideways expanding jet. This is superimposed by a short term variability especially during early time (Delta t < 8 days). The cause of variability is not well understood, though it has occurred simultaneously with similar amplitude in all the filters. We derive the early and late time flux decay constants using jet model. The late time flux decay is the steepest amongst the GRB OTs observed so far with alpha ~ 3. Steepening in the flux decay seems to have started simultaneously around Delta t ~ 7.6 day in all passbands. The value of spectral index in the optical-near IR region is ~ -1.0. Redshift determination with z=2.0335 indicates cosmological origin of the GRB having a luminosity distance of 16.6 Gpc. Thus it becomes the second farthest amongst the GRBs with known distances. An indirect estimate of the fluence > 20 keV indicates, if isotropic,> =10^53 ergs of release of energy. The enormous amount of released energy will be reduced, if the radiation is beamed which is the case for this event. Using a jet break time of 7.6 days, we infer a jet opening angle of ~ 0.15 radian. The CCD magnitudes in Cousins R and I photometric passbands are determined for GRB 991216 and GRB 991208 afterglows respectively about 1 and about 3 day after trigger of the corresponding gamma-ray bursts. Light curves of the afterglow emissions are obtained by combining the published data with the present measurements in R and I passbands for GRB 991208 and in R, Gunn I and J passbands for GRB 991216. They indicate that the flux decay constants of a GRB are almost the same in each passband with values about 2.2 for GRB 991208 and about 1.2 for GRB 991216 indicating very fast optical flux decay in the case of former which may be due to beaming effect. However, cause of steepening by 0.23 +/- 0.06 dex in the R light curve of GRB 991216 afterglow between 2 to 2.5 day after the burst, is presently not understood. Redshift determinations indicate that both GRBs are at cosmological distance with a value of 4.2 Gpc for GRB 991208 and 6.2 Gpc for GRB 991216. The observed fluence above 20 keV indicates, if isotropic, release of energy about 1.3 x 10^{53} erg for GRB 991208 and about 6.7 x 10^{53} erg for GRB 991216 by these bright gamma-ray flashes. The enormous amount of released energy will be reduced, if the radiation is beamed which seems to be case for GRB 991208 afterglow.The quasi-simultaneous broad-band photometric spectral energy distributions of the afterglows are determined about 8.5 day and about 35 hour after the bursts of GRB 991208 and GRB 991216 respectively.The flux decreases exponentially with frequency. The value of spectral index in the optical-near IR region is -0.75 +/- 0.03 for GRB 991208 and -1.0 +/- 0.12 for GRB 991216., Comment: 13 pages and 5 figures

A photometric and proper motion survey has been obtained in 2 directions at intermediate latitude: ($l=167.5^\circ$, $b=47.4^\circ$; $\alpha_{2000}=9^h41^m26^s$,$\delta_{2000}=+49^\circ53'27''$) and ($l=278^\circ$, $b=47^\circ$; $\alpha_{2000}=11^h42^m56^s$, $\delta_{2000}=-12^\circ31'42''$). The survey covers 7.13 and 20.84 square degrees, respectively. The limiting magnitude is about 18.5 in V for both directions. We have derived the density laws for stars (M$_{V}$ $\ge$ 3.5) as a function of distance from the galactic plane. The density laws for stars follow a sum of two exponentials with scale heights of 240 pc (thin disk) and 790 pc (thick disk), respectively. The local density of thick disk is found to be 6.1$\pm$3 % relative to the thin disk. The kinematical distribution of stars has been probed to distances up to 3.5 kpc above the galactic plane. New estimates of the parameters of velocity ellipsoid have been derived for the thick disk of the Galaxy. A comparison of our data sets with the Besan\c con model star count predictions has been performed, giving a good agreement in the magnitude range V = 13 to 18., Comment: 13 pages, 8 PS figures, To appear in A&A

These observations have been taken approximately 12 hours after trigger of the gamma-ray burst. BVR photometric light curves are obtained by combining the published data with the present measurements. They indicate that the flux decay constants in $BV$ and $R$ passbands are almost the same. We have been doing a photometric and astrometric sample survey programme on Schmidt plates in a few selected directions in the Galaxy with an aim to study galactic stellar populations. In order to calibrate Schmidt plates photometrically, it is necessary to have a number of photometric standards which cover the entire range of magnitudes to be studied on the plates. As Schmidt plates cover a wide area of the sky, the standards should also be spread over the surface of the plate so as to minimise geometrical effects present on the plate. This paper is first in a series of papers aimed at to provide photometric standards in the selected galactic directions to be studied. In this paper we present photometric magnitudes obtained through CCD observation in the galactic direction (l=170deg, b=45deg) centered at alpha(2000) = 9h 41m 20s and delta(2000) = +49deg 54' 20'' and covering an area of 14 sq degs. B and V magnitudes have been obtained for a total of 214 stars out of which for 73 stars U magnitudes also have been obtained. The magnitude range covered is 11

We have derived a new photographic photometry and proper motions for 20000 stars with completeness to V = 18 in the direction of galactic center at the intermediate latitude (l = 3 deg,b = 47 deg; alpha(1950)=15h 18m, delta(1950) = +02deg 16') for a 15.5 sq deg field. The combination of four glass copies of the Palomar Observatory Sky Survey (i.e. POSS 1402 E&O and POSS 1429 E&O) has been used as a first epoch for proper motion determination. The random error of the proper motions is approximately 0.''3/cen to V=17. The photometric accuracy ranges between 0.07 to 0.10 in the V, B and U bands. We stress the importance of the magnitude and color effects in astrometric surveys of field stars. Using color-magnitude diagrams of a few cluster member stars, a new distance of 6.9+-0.5 kpc is derived for M5 and 20.3+-0.8 kpc for Pal 5 globular clusters. This is in good agreement with other determinations. We have analyzed the components of U+W and V galactic space motions resulting from the accurate proper motions survey. No dependence with z distance is found in the asymmetric drift of the thick disk population. Materials are more flammable in oxygen rich environments than in air. When the structural elements of a system containing oxygen ignite and burn, the results are often catastrophic, causing loss of equipment and perhaps even human lives. Therefore, selection of the proper metallic and non-metallic materials for use in oxygen systems is extremely important. While test methods for the selection of non-metallic materials have been available for years, test methods for the selection of alloys have not been available until recently. Presented here are several test methods that were developed recently at NASA's White Sands Test Facility (WSTF) to study the ignition and combustion of alloys, including the supersonic and subsonic speed particle impact tests, the frictional heating and coefficient of friction tests, and the promoted combustion test. These test methods are available for commercial use.
