This study investigates the electronic states and physical quantities of an organic charge-transfer complex HMTSF-TCNQ, which undergoes a charge-density-wave (CDW) phase transition at temperature $T_c\simeq 30$ K. A first-principles calculation is utilized to determine that the normal state is a topological semimetal with open nodal lines. Besed on the first-principles calculation, we develop a tight-binding model to investigate the electronic state in detail. Below $T_c$, the CDW phase is examined in the tight-binding scheme using the mean-field approximation. It is shown that the open nodal lines are deformed into closed ones, and their shapes are sensitive to the order parameter. Using this tight-binding model, we theoretically evaluate the temperature dependencies of two physical quantities: the spin-lattice relaxation time $T_1$ and the orbital magnetic susceptibility. In particular, an anomalous plateau is obtained at low temperatures in the orbital diamagnetism. We presume that this anomalous plateau originates owing to the conflict between the interband diamagnetism, impurity scattering, and the nodal line deformation. We also conduct an experiment to investigate the orbital magnetism, and the results are in excellent quantitative agreement with the theory.

A Dirac electron system in solids mimics a relativistic quantum physics that is compatible with Maxwell's equations, by which we anticipate unified electromagnetic responses. We find a large orbital diamagnetism only along the interplane direction and the nearly temperature-independent conductance of the order of e2/h for the new 2D Dirac organic conductor, a-(BETS)2I3. Distinct from conventional electrons in solids whose nonrelativistic effects bifurcate electric and magnetic responses, the observed orbital diamagnetism scales the electrical conductivity for a wide temperature range. This demonstrates that an electromagnetic duality that is valid only within the relativistic framework is revived in solids.

We study the thermal conductivity in the excitonic insulator using a simple quasi one-dimensional two-band model consisting of electron and hole bands with the Coulomb interactions between these bands. Based on the linear response theory within a mean-field scheme, we develop a method to identify the contributions to thermal conductivity driven by excitonic insulator. It is found that there is an additional heat current operator owing to the excitonic phase transition, and that it gives contributions to thermal conductivity which are not expressed in the form of Sommerfeld-Bethe relations written in the form of an imaginary-time derivative of the electric current operator. Finally, we discuss the relationship between the newly-found additional contribution and the heat current carried by excitons., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

In Dirac semimetals, inter-band mixing has been known theoretically to give rise to a giant orbital diamagnetism when the Fermi level is close to the Dirac point. In Bi$ _{1-x}$Sb$ _x$ and other Dirac semimetals, an enhanced diamagnetism in the magnetic susceptibility $\chi$ has been observed and interpreted as a manifestation of such giant orbital diamagnetism. Experimentally proving their orbital origin, however, has remained challenging. Cubic antiperovskite Sr$ _3$PbO is a three-dimensional Dirac electron system and shows the giant diamagnetism in $\chi$ as in the other Dirac semimetals. $ ^{207}$Pb NMR measurements are conducted in this study to explore the microscopic origin of diamagnetism. From the analysis of the Knight shift $K$ as a function of $\chi$ and the relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ for samples with different hole densities, the spin and the orbital components in $K$ are successfully separated. The results establish that the enhanced diamagnetism in Sr$ _3$PbO originates from the orbital contribution of Dirac electrons, which is fully consistent with the theory of giant orbital diamagnetism.

Using high-resolution spin-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we observed a thermal spin depolarization to which all spin-polarized electrons contribute. Furthermore we observed a distinct minority spin state near the Fermi level and a corresponding depolarization that seldom contributes to demagnetization. The origin of this depolarization has been identified as the many-body effect characteristics of half-metallic ferromagnets. The kinetic features of holes (electrons) in the Hubbard model are studied using a variational Monte Carlo method. In doped Mott insulators (U>U_co), holes are classified, in the sense of conduction, into two categories: (i) The holes appearing in doublon-holon pairs are localized, encourage singlet pair formation, and gain the energy to induce a superconducting transition. (ii) The doped holes become carriers, make the system itinerant (superconducting or metallic), but lose the energy in the transition. These two roles are distinguished in correlated superconductivity. Nuclear magnetic relaxation rate 1/T_1 in iron-pnictide superconductors is calculated using the gap function obtained in a microscopic calculation. Based on the obtained results, we discuss the issues such as the rapid decrease of 1/T_1 just below the transition temperature and the difference between nodeless and nodal s-wave gap functions. We also investigate the effect of Coulomb interaction on 1/T_1 in the random phase approximation and show its importance in interpreting the experimental results., Comment: Proceedings of 9th International Conference on Materials and Mechanisms of Superconductivity. We propose a simple way to parameterize the gap function in iron pnictides. The key idea is to use orbital representation, not band representation, and to assume real-space short-range pairing. Our parameterization reproduces fairly well the structure of gap function obtained in microscopic calculation. At the same time the present parameterization is simple enough to obtain an intuitive picture and to develop a phenomenological theory. Muon spin relaxation ($\mu$SR) measurements on the new layered cobalt oxide superconductor Na$_{0.35}$CoO$_{2}\cdot$1.3H$_{2}$O and its parent, non-superconducting compounds, have revealed unconventional nature of superconductivity through: (1) a small superfluid energy which implies a surprisingly high effective mass of the charge carriers, approximately 100 times the bare electron mass; (2) the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$ scaling with the superfluid energy following the correlations found in high-$T_{c}$ cuprate and some other two-dimensional superconductors; (3) an anisotropic pairing without broken time-reversal symmetry; and (4) the proximity of a magnetically ordered insulating phase at Na$_{0.5}$CoO$_{2}$ below $T_{N}$ = 53 K., Comment: 6 pages 4 figures: Contact Y.J. A new type of analytic estimation of the effect of strong correlation is developed for the two-dimensional t-J model. It is based on the Gutzwiller approximation which gives the renormalization of parameters, t and J, due to the Gutzwiller's projection operator excluding the double occupancies. The finite-range correlations are taken into account compared with the conventional Gutzwiller approximation where only the on-site expectation values are considered. It is shown that the essential point of the renormalization is its nonlinear dependence on the expectation values of Cooper pairs and antiferromagnetic moment. In particular the renormalization factor of J becomes anisotropic in the presence of antiferromagnetic moment, i.e., that for the z-component is enhanced compared with that for the xy-component. The physical origin of this enhancement is identified as the surrounding antiferromagnetic correlations of a bond. The self-consistency equations for the uniform variational wave functions are derived and solved numerically. Our result gives a reasonable estimate of antiferromagnetic order parameters near half filling, in contrast to the conventional slave-boson mean-field theory and the original Gutzwiller approximation. It is also found that, at half filling, the renormalization of J represents some of the quantum fluctuations of the Heisenberg spin system in a different manner from the spin-wave theory. For finite doping, our results have some similarity to SO(5) symmetric theory. Fermi surface of the two-dimensional t-J model is studied using the variational Monte Carlo method. We study the Gutzwiller projected d-wave superconducting state with an additional variational parameter t'_v corresponding to the next-nearest neighbor hopping term. It is found that the finite t'_v<0 gives the lowest variational energy in the wide range of hole-doping rates. The obtained momentum distribution function shows that the Fermi surface deforms spontaneously. It is also shown that the van Hove singularity is always located very close to the Fermi energy. Using the Gutzwiller approximation, we show that this spontaneous deformation is due to the Gutzwiller projection operator or the strong correlation., Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures, revtex

Spatial dependencies of the pair potential and the local density of states near the surfaces of $d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$-wave superconductors are studied theoretically. The calculation is based on the t-J model within a mean-field theory with Gutzwiller approximation. Various types of surface geometries are considered. Similar to our result in the extended Hubbard model, it is found that the formation of zero-energy states strongly depends on the surface geometry. In addition to this feature, the zero-energy states give peak splitting for the (110) surfaces when the super-exchange interaction $J$ is large. This is due to the induced s-wave component near the surface. The present result explains the microscopic origin of the spontaneous time- reversal symmetry breaking at the surfaces of high-$T_{c}$ superconductors., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, to appear in Journal of the Physical Society of Japan Vol.67 No.4

The effects of non-magnetic impurities randomly doped into a two-leg Heisenberg spin ladder are investigated. Using the continuous time quantum Monte Carlo loop algorithm we calculate the uniform and staggered susceptibilities of such a system. The obtained uniform susceptibility is well described in terms of an effective model of weakly interacting local moments induced by non-magnetic impurities for a 1% doping case, but not for higher concentrations. The staggered susceptibility however is significantly enhanced over that in the effective model already at 1% doping. Using a mean field approximation for the interladder coupling, we explain qualitatively the phase diagram of Sr(Cu_{1-x}Zn_x)_2O_3., Comment: Some grammatical or typographical errors are corrected. 4 pages and 5 figures

Two-dimensional Heisenberg model with anisotropic couplings in the $x$ and $y$ directions ($J_x \neq J_y$) is considered. The model is first solved in the Schwinger-boson mean-field approximation. Then the solution is Gutzwiller projected to satisfy the local constraint that there is only one boson at each site. The energy and spin-spin correlation of the obtained wavefunction are calculated for systems with up to $20 \times 20$ sites by means of the variational Monte Carlo simulation. The current status of communications satellite development in Japan is presented. It is shown that beginning with research on satellite communucations in the late 1950's, progress was made in the areas of communications, remote sensing, and technology experimentation. The current status of communication satellites is presented, stressing development in the areas of CFRP construction elements, the use of LSI and MIC circuits, advanced multibeam antenna systems, Ku and Ka band transmission systems, and the shift to small-scale earth stations. Methods for reducing costs and increasing transmission efficiency are shown. The technical specifications of all satellite projects currently under development are given. Users of Japanese communications satellite are presented.
