Statistical 3D shape models of the head, hands, and fullbody are widely used in computer vision and graphics. Despite their wide use, we show that existing models of the head and hands fail to capture the full range of motion for these parts. Moreover, existing work largely ignores the feet, which are crucial for modeling human movement and have applications in biomechanics, animation, and the footwear industry. The problem is that previous body part models are trained using 3D scans that are isolated to the individual parts. Such data does not capture the full range of motion for such parts, e.g. the motion of head relative to the neck. Our observation is that full-body scans provide important information about the motion of the body parts. Consequently, we propose a new learning scheme that jointly trains a full-body model and specific part models using a federated dataset of full-body and body-part scans. Specifically, we train an expressive human body model called SUPR (Sparse Unified Part-Based Human Representation), where each joint strictly influences a sparse set of model vertices. The factorized representation enables separating SUPR into an entire suite of body part models. Note that the feet have received little attention and existing 3D body models have highly under-actuated feet. Using novel 4D scans of feet, we train a model with an extended kinematic tree that captures the range of motion of the toes. Additionally, feet deform due to ground contact. To model this, we include a novel non-linear deformation function that predicts foot deformation conditioned on the foot pose, shape, and ground contact. We train SUPR on an unprecedented number of scans: 1.2 million body, head, hand and foot scans. We quantitatively compare SUPR and the separated body parts and find that our suite of models generalizes better than existing models. We demonstrate training of a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) for prediction of optical property maps (scattering and absorption) using spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) image data sets generated synthetically with free open-source 3D modelling and rendering software, Blender. The flexibility of Blender is exploited to simulate 3 models with real-life relevance to clinical SFDI of diseased tissue: flat samples, flat samples with spheroidal tumours and cylindrical samples with spheroidal tumours representing imaging inside a tubular organ e.g. the gastro-intestinal tract. In all 3 scenarios we show the GAN provides accurate reconstruction of optical properties from single SFDI images with mean normalised error ranging from 1-1.2% for absorption and 0.7-1.2% for scattering, resulting in visually improved contrast for tumour spheroid structures. This compares favourably with 25% absorption error and 10% scattering error achieved using GANs on experimental SFDI data. However, some of this improvement is due to lower noise and availability of perfect ground truths so we therefore cross-validate our synthetically-trained GAN with a GAN trained on experimental data and observe visually accurate results with error of <40% for absorption and <25% for scattering, due largely to the presence of spatial frequency mismatch artefacts. Our synthetically trained GAN is therefore highly relevant to real experimental samples, but provides significant added benefits of large training datasets, perfect ground-truths and the ability to test realistic imaging geometries, e.g. inside cylinders, for which no conventional single-shot demodulation algorithms exist. In future we expect that application of techniques such as domain adaptation or training on hybrid real-synthetic datasets will create a powerful tool for fast, accurate production of optical property maps from real clinical imaging systems., Comment: 17 pages

People touch their face 23 times an hour, they cross their arms and legs, put their hands on their hips, etc. While many images of people contain some form of self-contact, current 3D human pose and shape (HPS) regression methods typically fail to estimate this contact. To address this, we develop new datasets and methods that significantly improve human pose estimation with self-contact. First, we create a dataset of 3D Contact Poses (3DCP) containing SMPL-X bodies fit to 3D scans as well as poses from AMASS, which we refine to ensure good contact. Second, we leverage this to create the Mimic-The-Pose (MTP) dataset of images, collected via Amazon Mechanical Turk, containing people mimicking the 3DCP poses with selfcontact. Third, we develop a novel HPS optimization method, SMPLify-XMC, that includes contact constraints and uses the known 3DCP body pose during fitting to create near ground-truth poses for MTP images. Fourth, for more image variety, we label a dataset of in-the-wild images with Discrete Self-Contact (DSC) information and use another new optimization method, SMPLify-DC, that exploits discrete contacts during pose optimization. Finally, we use our datasets during SPIN training to learn a new 3D human pose regressor, called TUCH (Towards Understanding Contact in Humans). We show that the new self-contact training data significantly improves 3D human pose estimates on withheld test data and existing datasets like 3DPW. Not only does our method improve results for self-contact poses, but it also improves accuracy for non-contact poses. Locust infestation of some regions in the world, including Africa, Asia and Middle East has become a concerning issue that can affect the health and the lives of millions of people. In this respect, there have been attempts to resolve or reduce the severity of this problem via detection and monitoring of locust breeding areas using satellites and sensors, or the use of chemicals to prevent the formation of swarms. However, such methods have not been able to suppress the emergence and the collective behaviour of locusts. The ability to predict the location of the locust swarms prior to their formation, on the other hand, can help people get prepared and tackle the infestation issue more effectively. Here, we use machine learning to predict the location of locust swarms using the available data published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. The data includes the location of the observed swarms as well as environmental information, including soil moisture and the density of vegetation. The obtained results show that our proposed model can successfully, and with reasonable precision, predict the location of locust swarms, as well as their likely level of damage using a notion of density.

The SMPL body model is widely used for the estimation, synthesis, and analysis of 3D human pose and shape. While popular, we show that SMPL has several limitations and introduce STAR, which is quantitatively and qualitatively superior to SMPL. First, SMPL has a huge number of parameters resulting from its use of global blend shapes. These dense pose-corrective offsets relate every vertex on the mesh to all the joints in the kinematic tree, capturing spurious long-range correlations. To address this, we define per-joint pose correctives and learn the subset of mesh vertices that are influenced by each joint movement. This sparse formulation results in more realistic deformations and significantly reduces the number of model parameters to 20% of SMPL. When trained on the same data as SMPL, STAR generalizes better despite having many fewer parameters. Second, SMPL factors pose-dependent deformations from body shape while, in reality, people with different shapes deform differently. Consequently, we learn shape-dependent pose-corrective blend shapes that depend on both body pose and BMI. Third, we show that the shape space of SMPL is not rich enough to capture the variation in the human population. We address this by training STAR with an additional 10,000 scans of male and female subjects, and show that this results in better model generalization. The rise of deep learning in today's applications entailed an increasing need in explaining the model's decisions beyond prediction performances in order to foster trust and accountability. Recently, the field of explainable AI (XAI) has developed methods that provide such explanations for already trained neural networks. In computer vision tasks such explanations, termed heatmaps, visualize the contributions of individual pixels to the prediction. So far XAI methods along with their heatmaps were mainly validated qualitatively via human-based assessment, or evaluated through auxiliary proxy tasks such as pixel perturbation, weak object localization or randomization tests. Due to the lack of an objective and commonly accepted quality measure for heatmaps, it was debatable which XAI method performs best and whether explanations can be trusted at all. In the present work, we tackle the problem by proposing a ground truth based evaluation framework for XAI methods based on the CLEVR visual question answering task. Our framework provides a (1) selective, (2) controlled and (3) realistic testbed for the evaluation of neural network explanations. We compare ten different explanation methods, resulting in new insights about the quality and properties of XAI methods, sometimes contradicting with conclusions from previous comparative studies. The field of video compression has developed some of the most sophisticated and efficient compression algorithms known in the literature, enabling very high compressibility for little loss of information. Whilst some of these techniques are domain specific, many of their underlying principles are universal in that they can be adapted and applied for compressing different types of data. In this work we present DeepCABAC, a compression algorithm for deep neural networks that is based on one of the state-of-the-art video coding techniques. Concretely, it applies a Context-based Adaptive Binary Arithmetic Coder (CABAC) to the network's parameters, which was originally designed for the H.264/AVC video coding standard and became the state-of-the-art for lossless compression. Moreover, DeepCABAC employs a novel quantization scheme that minimizes the rate-distortion function while simultaneously taking the impact of quantization onto the accuracy of the network into account. Experimental results show that DeepCABAC consistently attains higher compression rates than previously proposed coding techniques for neural network compression. For instance, it is able to compress the VGG16 ImageNet model by x63.6 with no loss of accuracy, thus being able to represent the entire network with merely 8.7MB. We present DeepCABAC, a novel context-adaptive binary arithmetic coder for compressing deep neural networks. It quantizes each weight parameter by minimizing a weighted rate-distortion function, which implicitly takes the impact of quantization on to the accuracy of the network into account. Subsequently, it compresses the quantized values into a bitstream representation with minimal redundancies. We show that DeepCABAC is able to reach very high compression ratios across a wide set of different network architectures and datasets. Recently, several methods have been proposed to explain the predictions of recurrent neural networks (RNNs), in particular of LSTMs. The goal of these methods is to understand the network's decisions by assigning to each input variable, e.g., a word, a relevance indicating to which extent it contributed to a particular prediction. In previous works, some of these methods were not yet compared to one another, or were evaluated only qualitatively. We close this gap by systematically and quantitatively comparing these methods in different settings, namely (1) a toy arithmetic task which we use as a sanity check, (2) a five-class sentiment prediction of movie reviews, and besides (3) we explore the usefulness of word relevances to build sentence-level representations. To facilitate the analysis of human actions, interactions and emotions, we compute a 3D model of human body pose, hand pose, and facial expression from a single monocular image. To achieve this, we use thousands of 3D scans to train a new, unified, 3D model of the human body, SMPL-X, that extends SMPL with fully articulated hands and an expressive face. Learning to regress the parameters of SMPL-X directly from images is challenging without paired images and 3D ground truth. Consequently, we follow the approach of SMPLify, which estimates 2D features and then optimizes model parameters to fit the features. We improve on SMPLify in several significant ways: (1) we detect 2D features corresponding to the face, hands, and feet and fit the full SMPL-X model to these; (2) we train a new neural network pose prior using a large MoCap dataset; (3) we define a new interpenetration penalty that is both fast and accurate; (4) we automatically detect gender and the appropriate body models (male, female, or neutral); (5) our PyTorch implementation achieves a speedup of more than 8x over Chumpy. We use the new method, SMPLify-X, to fit SMPL-X to both controlled images and images in the wild. We evaluate 3D accuracy on a new curated dataset comprising 100 images with pseudo ground-truth. This is a step towards automatic expressive human capture from monocular RGB data. Visual Question Answering (VQA) requires AI models to comprehend data in two domains, vision and text. Current state-of-the-art models use learned attention mechanisms to extract relevant information from the input domains to answer a certain question. Thus, robust attention mechanisms are essential for powerful VQA models. In this paper, we propose a recurrent attention mechanism and show its benefits compared to the traditional convolutional approach. We perform two ablation studies to evaluate recurrent attention. First, we introduce a baseline VQA model with visual attention and test the performance difference between convolutional and recurrent attention on the VQA 2.0 dataset. Secondly, we design an architecture for VQA which utilizes dual (textual and visual) Recurrent Attention Units (RAUs). Using this model, we show the effect of all possible combinations of recurrent and convolutional dual attention. Our single model outperforms the first place winner on the VQA 2016 challenge and to the best of our knowledge, it is the second best performing single model on the VQA 1.0 dataset. Furthermore, our model noticeably improves upon the winner of the VQA 2017 challenge. We are witnessing a proliferation of massive visual data. Unfortunately scaling existing computer vision algorithms to large datasets leaves researchers repeatedly solving the same algorithmic, logistical, and infrastructural problems. Our goal is to democratize computer vision; one should not have to be a computer vision, big data and distributed computing expert to have access to state-of-the-art distributed computer vision algorithms. We present CloudCV, a comprehensive system to provide access to state-of-the-art distributed computer vision algorithms as a cloud service through a Web Interface and APIs.

Plagiarism of material from the Internet is a widespread and growing problem. Several methods used to detect the plagiarism and similarity between the source document and suspected documents such as fingerprint based on character or n-gram. In this paper, we discussed a new method to detect the plagiarism based on graph representation; however, Preprocessing for each document is required such as breaking down the document into its constituent sentences. Segmentation of each sentence into separated terms and stop word removal. We build the graph by grouping each sentence terms in one node, the resulted nodes are connected to each other based on order of sentence within the document, all nodes in graph are also connected to top level node "Topic Signature". Topic signature node is formed by extracting the concepts of each sentence terms and grouping them in such node. The main advantage of the proposed method is the topic signature which is main entry for the graph is used as quick guide to the relevant nodes. which should be considered for the comparison between source documents and suspected one.
