Search

Bringing increasingly complex polyatomic molecules within reach of precision measurement experiments offers fascinating and far-reaching prospects ranging from Earth sciences and astrophysics, to metrology and quantum sciences. Here, we demonstrate sub-Doppler spectroscopic measurements in the mid-IR fingerprint region of, to our knowledge, the largest molecule to date. To this end, we use a high-resolution ~10.3 $\mu$m spectrometer based on a sub-Hz quantum cascade laser remotely calibrated against state-of-the-art primary frequency standards via a metrology-grade fibre link. We perform saturated absorption spectroscopy in the v5 CO stretching mode of 1,3,5-trioxane, (H2CO)3, at a resolution of ~100 kHz, allowing us to measure the absolute frequency of hundreds of rovibrational transitions at unprecedented uncertainties for such a complex species, as low as ~5 kHz. Our work demonstrates the extension of frequency metrology methodologies to ever larger molecular system, confirming the potential of the technologies we develop for bringing increasingly complex species within reach of ultra-precise measurement experiments.

Using a mid-infrared quantum cascade laser and wavelength modulation absorption spectroscopy, we measure the frequencies of ro-vibrational transitions of N$_2$O in the 17 $\mu$m region with uncertainties below 5 MHz. These lines, corresponding to the bending mode of the molecule, can be used for calibration of spectrometers in this spectral region. We present a model for the lineshapes of absorption features in wavelength modulation spectroscopy that takes into account Doppler broadening, collisional broadening, saturation of the absorption, and lineshape distortion due to frequency and intensity modulation. Combining our data with previous measurements, we provide a set of spectroscopic parameters for several vibrational states of N$_2$O. The lines measured here fall in the same spectral region as a mid-infrared frequency reference that we are currently developing using trapped, ultracold molecules. With such a frequency reference, the spectroscopic methods demonstrated here have the potential to improve frequency calibration in this part of the spectrum., Comment: 33 pages, 8 figures. We demonstrate a free-space amplitude modulator for mid-infrared radiation (lambda=9.6 um) that operates at room temperature up to at least 20 GHz (above the -3dB cutoff frequency measured at 8.2 GHz). The device relies on the ultra-fast transition between weak and strong-coupling regimes induced by the variation of the applied bias voltage. Such transition induces a modulation of the device reflectivity. It is made of a semiconductor heterostructure enclosed in a judiciously designed array of metal-metal optical resonators, that - all-together - behave as an electrically tunable surface. At negative bias, it operates in the weak light-matter coupling regime. Upon application of an appropriate positive bias, the quantum wells populate with electrons and the device transitions to the strong-coupling regime. The modulator transmission keeps linear with input RF power in the 0dBm - 9dBm range. The increase of optical powers up to 25 mW exhibit a weak beginning saturation a little bit below.

We report the upgrade and operation of a frequency-comb-assisted high-resolution mid-infrared molecular spectrometer allowing us to combine high spectral purity, SI-traceability, wide tunability and high sensitivity. An optical frequency comb is used to transfer the spectral purity of a SI-traceable 1.54 $\mu$m metrology-grade frequency reference to a 10.3 $\mu$m quantum cascade laser (QCL). The near-infrared reference is operated at the French time/frequency metrology institute, calibrated there to primary frequency standards, and transferred to Laboratoire de Physique des Lasers via the REFIMEVE fiber network. The QCL exhibits a line width of $\delta\nu\sim 0.1$ Hz, a sub-$10^{-15}$ relative frequency stability from 0.1 to 10 s and its frequency is traceable to the SI with a total relative uncertainty better than $4\times10^{-14}$ after 1-s averaging time. We have developed the instrumentation allowing comb modes to be continuously tuned over 9 GHz resulting in a QCL of record spectral purity uninterruptedly tunable at the precision of the reference over an unprecedented span of $\Delta\nu$ = 1.4 GHz. We have used our apparatus to conduct sub-Doppler spectroscopy of methanol in a multi-pass cell, demonstrating state-of-art frequency uncertainties down to the few kilohertz level ($\sim10^{-10}$ in relative value). We have observed weak intensity resonances unreported so far, resolved subtle doublets never seen before and brought to light discrepancies with the HITRAN database. This demonstrates the potential of our apparatus for probing subtle internal molecular processes, building accurate spectroscopic models of polyatomic molecules of atmospheric or astrophysical interest, and carrying out precise spectroscopic tests of fundamental physics., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

We describe the properties of a continuous-wave room-temperature quantum cascade laser operating at the long wavelength of 17 $\mu$m. Long wavelength mid-infrared quantum cascade lasers offer new opportunities for chemical detection, vibrational spectroscopy and metrological measurements using molecular species. In particular, probing low energy vibrational transitions would be beneficial to the spectroscopy of large and complex molecules, reducing intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution which acts as a decoherence channel. By performing linear absorption spectroscopy of the v2 fundamental vibrational mode of N2O molecules, we have demonstrated the spectral range and spectroscopic potential of this laser, and characterized its free-running frequency noise properties. Finally, we also discuss the potential application of this specific laser in an experiment to test fundamental physics with ultra-cold molecules.

This work presents two distinct approaches to estimating the exponent related to the distribution of optical rogue waves observed in supercontinuum generated in a single-mode fiber, that is, to quantifying the rogueness. The first is a generalization of the well-known Hill estimator, and the second relies on estimating all parameters of a multi-parameter model. We show that the model shows a good correspondence with experimental data, and that the two estimating approaches provide consistent results, which are significantly more accurate than those obtained with earlier methods of estimation. Furthermore, alternative visualization through the tail function revealed the presence of pump depletion as well as detector saturation leading to the breakdown of power-law behavior for the largest observations. We characterized this breakdown via a combination of an exponential and a generalized Pareto distribution. Additionally, we have uncovered a weak memory effect in the data, which can be attributed to changes of the refractive index in the single-mode fiber., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

Continuously graded parabolic quantum wells with excellent optical performances are used to overcome the low-frequency and thermal limitations of square quantum wells at terahertz frequencies. The formation of microcavity intersubband polaritons at frequencies as low as 1.8 THz is demonstrated, with a sustained ultra-strong coupling regime up to a temperature of 200K. It is additionally shown that the ultra-strong coupling regime is preserved when the active region is embedded in sub-wavelength resonators, with an estimated relative strength $\eta = \Omega_R / \omega_0 = 0.12$. This represents an important milestone for future studies of quantum vacuum radiation because such resonators can be optically modulated at ultrafast rates, possibly leading to the generation of non-classical light via the dynamic Casimir effect. Finally, with an effective volume of $2.10^{-6} \lambda_0^3$, it is estimated that fewer than 3000 electrons per resonator are ultra-strongly coupled to the quantized electromagnetic mode, proving it is also a promising approach to explore few-electron polaritonic systems operating at relatively high temperatures., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

In this work, using the theory of first-order macroscopic crowd models, we introduce a compartmental advection-diffusion model, describing the spatio-temporal dynamics of a population in different human behaviors (alert, panic and control) during a catastrophic event. For this model, we prove the local existence, uniqueness and regularity of a solution, as well as the positivity and $L^1$--boundedness of this solution. Then, in order to study the spatio-temporal propagation of these behavioral reactions within a population during a catastrophic event, we present several numerical simulations for different evacuation scenarios.

We demonstrate that absorption saturation of a mid-infrared intersubband transition can be engineered to occur at moderate light intensities of the order of 10-20 kW$.$cm$^{-2}$ and at room temperature. The structure consists of an array of metal-semiconductor-metal patches hosting a judiciously designed 253 nm thick GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor heterostructure. At low incident intensity the structure operates in the strong light-matter coupling regime and exhibits two absorption peaks at wavelengths close to 8.9 $\mu$m. Saturation appears as a transition to the weak coupling regime - and therefore to a single-peaked absorption - when increasing the incident intensity. Comparison with a coupled mode theory model explains the data and permits to infer the relevant system parameters. When the pump laser is tuned at the cavity frequency, the reflectivity decreases with increasing incident intensity. When instead the laser is tuned at the polariton frequencies, the reflectivity non-linearly increases with increasing incident intensity. At those wavelengths the system therefore mimics the behavior of a saturable absorption mirror (SESAM) in the mid-IR range, a technology that is currently missing.

Recently, the concept of strong light-matter coupling has been demonstrated in semiconductor structures, and it is poised to revolutionize the design and implementation of components, including solid state lasers and detectors. We demonstrate an original nanospectroscopy technique that permits to study the light-matter interaction in single subwavelength-sized nano-cavities where far-field spectroscopy is not possible using conventional techniques. We inserted a thin ($\approx$ 150 nm) polymer layer with negligible absorption in the mid-IR (5 $\mu$m < $\lambda$ < 12 $\mu$m) inside a metal-insulator-metal resonant cavity, where a photonic mode and the intersubband transition of a semiconductor quantum well are strongly coupled. The intersubband transition peaks at $\lambda$ = 8.3 $\mu$m, and the nano-cavity is overall 270 nm thick. Acting as a non-perturbative transducer, the polymer layer introduces only a limited alteration of the optical response while allowing to reveal the optical power absorbed inside the concealed cavity. Spectroscopy of the cavity losses is enabled by the polymer thermal expansion due to heat dissipation in the active part of the cavity, and performed using an atomic force microscope (AFM). This innovative approach allows the typical anticrossing characteristic of the polaritonic dispersion to be identified in the cavity loss spectra at the single nano-resonator level. Results also suggest that near-field coupling of the external drive field to the top metal patch mediated by a metal-coated AFM probe tip is possible, and it enables the near-field mapping of the cavity mode symmetry including in the presence of strong light-matter interaction.

We analyse the effect of a strong perpendicular magnetic field on an intersubband transition in a disordered doped quantum well strongly coupled to an optical cavity. The magnetic field changes the lineshape of the intersubband optical transition due to the interface roughness of the quantum well from a Lorentzian to a Gaussian one. In this regime, a novel form of magnetic-field-induced cavity protection sets in, which strongly reduces the polariton linewidth to the cavity contribution only. Implications of our results for fundamental studies of nonlinear polariton dynamics and for technological applications to polariton lasers are finally highlighted.

The ultrafast scattering dynamics of intersubband polaritons in dispersive cavities embedding GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells are studied directly within their band structure using a non-collinear pump-probe geometry with phase-stable mid-infrared pulses. Selective excitation of the lower polariton at a frequency of ~25 THz and at a finite in-plane momentum, $k_{||}$, leads to the emergence of a narrowband maximum in the probe reflectivity at $k_{||}=0$. A quantum mechanical model identifies the underlying microscopic process as stimulated coherent polariton-polariton scattering. These results mark an important milestone towards quantum control and bosonic lasing in custom-tailored polaritonic systems in the mid and far-infrared.

We theoretically study the coherent nonlinear response of electrons confined in semiconductor quantum wells under the effect of an electromagnetic radiation close to resonance with an intersubband transition. Our approach is based on the time-dependent Schr\"odinger-Poisson equation stemming from a Hartree description of Coulomb-interacting electrons. This equation is solved by standard numerical tools and the results are interpreted in terms of approximated analytical formulas. For growing intensity, we observe a redshift of the effective resonance frequency due to the reduction of the electric dipole moment and the corresponding suppression of the depolarization shift. The competition between coherent nonlinearities and incoherent saturation effects is discussed. The strength of the resulting optical nonlinearity is estimated across different frequency ranges from mid-IR to THz with an eye to ongoing experiments on Bose-Einstein condensation of intersubband polaritons and to the speculative exploration of quantum optical phenomena such as single-photon emission in the mid-IR and THz windows.

We present a mid-IR ($\lambda \approx$ 8.3 $\mu$m) quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) fabricated on a mid-IR transparent substrate, allowing photodetection with illumination from either the front surface or through the substrate. The device is based on a 400 nm-thick GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor QWIP heterostructure enclosed in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) cavity and hosted on a mid-IR transparent ZnSe substrate. Metallic stripes are symmetrically patterned by e-beam lithography on both sides of the active region. The detector spectral coverage spans from $\lambda \approx 7.15$ $\mu$m to $\lambda \approx 8.7$ $\mu$m by changing the stripe width L - from L = 1.0 $\mu$m to L = 1.3 $\mu$m - thus frequency-tuning the optical cavity mode. Both micro-FTIR passive optical characterizations and photocurrent measurements of the two-port system are carried out. We experimentally resolve the dispersion of multiple vibro-polariton modes issued from the strong coupling of different vibrational bands of the methylene group (CH2) in a 2.56$\mu$m thick polyethylene film with the confined modes of a mid-infrared Fabry-Perot micro-cavity. We measure a Rabi frequency of 111 cm$^{-1}$ for the stretching doublet around 2950 cm$^{-1}$ and a Rabi frequency of 29 cm$^{-1}$ for the scissoring doublet around 1460 cm$^{-1}$. This simple experimental approach offers the possibility to accurately fit the measured molecular film dielectric function. We propose a unified description of intersubband absorption saturation for quantum wells inserted in a resonator, both in the weak and strong light-matter coupling regimes. We demonstrate how absorption saturation can be engineered. In particular we show that the saturation intensity increases linearly with the doping in the strong coupling regime, while it remains doping independent in weak coupling. Hence, countering intuition, the most suitable region to exploit low saturation intensities is not the ultra-strong coupling regime, but is instead at the onset of the strong light-matter coupling. We further derive explicit conditions for the emergence of bistability. This work sets the path towards yet unexisting ultrafast mid-infrared semiconductor saturable absorption mirrors (SESAMs) and bistable systems. As an example, we show how to design a mid-infrared SESAM with a three orders of magnitude reduction in saturation intensity, down to about 5 kW/cm2.

Maritime domain is one of the most challenging scenarios for object detection due to the complexity of the observed scene. In this article, we present a new approach to detect unidentified floating objects in the maritime environment. The proposed approach is capable of detecting floating objects without any prior knowledge of their visual appearance, shape or location. The input image from the video stream is denoised using a visual dictionary learned from a K-SVD algorithm. The denoised image is made of self-similar content. Later, we extract the residual image, which is the difference between the original image and the denoised (self-similar) image. Thus, the residual image contains noise and salient structures (objects). These salient structures can be extracted using an a contrario model. We demonstrate the capabilities of our algorithm by testing it on videos exhibiting varying maritime scenarios., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Applications relying on mid-infrared radiation (Mid-IR, $\lambda\sim$ 3-30 $\mu$m) have progressed at a very rapid pace in recent years, stimulated by scientific and technological breakthroughs. Mid-IR cameras have propelled the field of thermal imaging. And the invention of the quantum cascade laser (QCL) has been a milestone, making compact, semiconductor-based mid-IR lasers available to a vast range of applications. All the recent breakthrough advances stemmed from the development of a transformative technology. In addition to the generation and detection of light, a key functionality for most photonics systems is the electrical control of the amplitude and/or phase of an optical beam at ultra-fast rates (GHz or more). However, standalone, broadband, integrated modulators are missing from the toolbox of present mid-IR photonics integrated circuits and systems developers. We have developed a free-space amplitude modulator for mid-IR radiation ($\lambda\sim$ 10 $\mu$m) that can operate up to at least 1.5 GHz (-3dB cut-off at $\sim$ 750 MHz) and at room-temperature. The device relies on a semiconductor hetero-structure enclosed in a judiciously designed metal-metal optical resonator. At zero bias, it operates in the strong light-matter coupling regime up to 300K. By applying an appropriate bias, the device transitions to the weak coupling regime. The large change in reflectivity due to the disappearance of the polaritonic states is exploited to modulate the intensity of a mid-IR continuous-wave laser up to speeds of more than 1.5 GHz.

In contrast to interband excitons in undoped quantum wells, doped quantum wells do not display sharp resonances due to excitonic bound states. In these systems the effective Coulomb interaction between electrons and holes typically only leads to a depolarization shift of the single-electron intersubband transitions. Non-perturbative light-matter interaction in solid-state devices has been investigated as a pathway to tune optoelectronic properties of materials. A recent theoretical work [Cortese et al., Optica 6, 354 (2019)] predicted that, when the doped quantum wells are embedded in a photonic cavity, emission-reabsorption processes of cavity photons can generate an effective attractive interaction which binds electrons and holes together, leading to the creation of an intraband bound exciton. Spectroscopically, this bound state manifests itself as a novel discrete resonance which appears below the ionisation threshold only when the coupling between light and matter is increased above a critical value. Here we report the first experimental observation of such a bound state using doped GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells embedded in metal-metal resonators whose confinement is high enough to permit operation in strong coupling. Our result provides the first evidence of bound states of charged particles kept together not by Coulomb interaction, but by the exchange of transverse photons. Light-matter coupling can thus be used as a novel tool in quantum material engineering, tuning electronic properties of semiconductor heterostructures beyond those permitted by mere crystal structures, with direct applications to mid-infrared optoelectronics.

We present a brief review of our progress towards measuring parity violation in heavy-metal chiral complexes using mid-infrared Ramsey interferometry. We discuss our progress addressing the main challenges, including the development of buffer-gas sources of slow, cold polyatomic molecules, and the frequency-stabilisation of quantum cascade lasers calibrated using primary frequency standards. We report investigations on achiral test species of which promising chiral derivatives have been synthesized.

We describe the design and show first results of a large solid angle X-ray emission spectrometer that is optimized for energies between 1.5 keV and 5.5 keV. The spectrometer is based on an array of 11 cylindrically bent Johansson crystal analyzers arranged in a non-dispersive Rowland circle geometry. The smallest achievable energy bandwidth is smaller than the core hole lifetime broadening of the absorption edges in this energy range. Energy scanning is achieved using an innovative design, maintaining the Rowland circle conditions for all crystals with only four motor motions. The entire spectrometer is encased in a high-vacuum chamber that allocates a liquid helium cryostat and provides sufficient space for in situ cells and operando catalysis reactors., Comment: Manuscript (11 pages, 10 figures) plus supporting information (8 pages, 12 figures)

We developed a technique that enables to replace a metallic waveguide cladding with a low-index (n $\sim$ 1.4) material - CaF2 or BaF2 - that in addition is transparent from the mid-IR up to the visible range: elevated confinement is preserved while introducing an optical entryway through the substrate. Replacing the metallic backplane also allows double-side patterning of the active region. Using this approach, we demonstrate strong light-matter coupling between an intersubband transition (lambda $\sim$ 10 microns) and a dispersive resonator, at 300 K and at 78 K. Finally, we evaluate the potential of this approach as a platform for waveguiding in the mid-IR spectral range, with numerical simulations that reveal losses in the 1-10 cm$^{-1}$ range., Comment: just accepted in optics express

Extreme events appear in many physics phenomena, whenever the probability distribution has a ''heavy tail'', differing very much from the equilibrium one. Most unusual are the cases of power-law (Pareto) probability distributions. Among their many manifestations in physics, from ''rogue waves'' in the ocean to L\'evy flights in random walks, Pareto dependences can follow very different power laws. For some outstanding cases the power exponents are less than 2, leading to indefinite mean values, let alone higher moments. Here we present the first evidence of indefinite-mean Pareto distribution of photon numbers at the output of nonlinear effects pumped by parametrically amplified vacuum noise, known as bright squeezed vacuum (BSV). We observe a Pareto distribution with power exponent 1.31 when BSV is used as a pump for supercontinuum generation, and other heavy-tailed distributions (however with definite moments) when it pumps optical harmonics generation. Unlike in other fields, we can flexibly control the Pareto exponent by changing the experimental parameters. This extremely fluctuating light is interesting for ghost imaging and quantum thermodynamics as a resource to produce more efficiently non-equilibrium states by single-photon subtraction, the latter we demonstrate experimentally.

The blinking dynamics of colloidal core-shell CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods is studied in detail at the single particle level. Analyzing the autocorrelation function of the fluorescence intensity, we demonstrate that these nanoemitters are characterized by a short value of the mean duration of bright periods (ten to a few hundreds of microseconds). The comparison of the results obtained for samples with different geometries shows that not only the shell thickness is crucial but also the shape of the dot- in-rods. Increasing the shell aspect ratio results in shorter bright periods suggesting that surface traps impact the stability of the fluorescence intensity.

We report experimental evidence of longitudinal optical (LO) phonon-intersubband polariton scattering processes under resonant injection of light. The scattering process is resonant with both the initial (upper polariton) and final (lower polariton) states and is induced by the interaction of confined electrons with longitudinal optical phonons. The system is optically pumped with a mid-IR laser tuned between 1094 cm-1 and 1134 cm-1 (lambda=9.14 um and lambda=8.82 um). The demonstration is provided for both GaAs/AlGaAs and InGaAs/AlInAs doped quantum well systems whose intersubband plasmon lies at lambda=10 um wavelength. In addition to elucidating the microscopic mechanism of the polariton-phonon scattering, that is found to differ substantially from the standard single particle electron-LO phonon scattering mechanism, this work constitutes the first step towards the hopefully forthcoming demonstration of an intersubband polariton laser., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

We study nonclassical features of multiphoton light emitted by clusters of single-photon emitters. As signatures of nonclassicality, we use violation of inequalities for normalized correlation functions of different orders or the probabilities of multiphoton detection. In experiment, for clusters of 2 to 14 colloidal CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods we observe nonclassical behavior, which gets even more pronounced for larger clusters., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

We demonstrate that intersubband (ISB) polaritons are robust to inhomogeneous effects originating from the presence of multiple quantum wells (MQWs). In a series of samples that exhibit mid-infrared ISB absorption transitions with broadenings varying by a factor of 5 (from 4 meV to 20meV), we have observed polariton linewidths always lying in the 4 - 7 meV range only. We have experimentally verified the dominantly inhomogeneous origin of the broadening of the ISB transition, and that the linewidth reduction effect of the polariton modes persists up to room-temperature. This immunity to inhomogeneous broadening is a direct consequence of the coupling of the large number of ISB oscillators to a single photonic mode. It is a precious tool to gauge the natural linewidth of the ISB plasmon , that is otherwise masked in such MQWs system , and is also beneficial in view of perspective applications such as intersubband polariton lasers.

The phase uncertainty of an unseeded nonlinear interferometer, where the output of one nonlinear crystal is transmitted to the input of a second crystal that analyzes it, is commonly said to be below the shot-noise level but highly dependent on detection and internal loss. Unbalancing the gains of the first (source) and second (analyzer) crystals leads to a configuration that is tolerant against detection loss. However, in terms of sensitivity, there is no advantage in choosing a stronger analyzer over a stronger source, and hence the comparison to a shot-noise level is not straightforward. Internal loss breaks this symmetry and shows that it is crucial whether the source or analyzer is dominating. Based on these results, claiming a Heisenberg scaling of the sensitivity is more subtle than in a balanced setup., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

In an unseeded SU(1,1) interferometer composed of two cascaded degenerate parametric amplifiers, with direct detection at the output, we demonstrate a phase sensitivity overcoming the shot noise limit by 2.3 dB. The interferometer is strongly unbalanced, with the parametric gain of the second amplifier exceeding the gain of the first one by a factor of 2, which makes the scheme extremely tolerant to detection losses. We show that by increasing the gain of the second amplifier, the phase supersensitivity of the interferometer can be preserved even with detection losses as high as 80%. This finding can considerably improve the state-of-the-art interferometry, enable sub-shot-noise phase sensitivity in spectral ranges with inefficient detection, and allow extension to quantum imaging.

Bright squeezed vacuum, a promising tool for quantum information, can be generated by high-gain parametric down-conversion. However, its frequency and angular spectra are typically quite broad, which is undesirable for applications requiring single-mode radiation. We tailor the frequency spectrum of high-gain parametric down-conversion using an SU(1,1) interferometer consisting of two nonlinear crystals with a dispersive medium separating them. The dispersive medium allows us to select a narrow band of the frequency spectrum to be exponentially amplified by high-gain parametric amplification. The frequency spectrum is thereby narrowed from (56.5 +- 0.1) to (1.22 +- 0.02) THz and, in doing so, the number of frequency modes is reduced from approximately 50 to 1.82 +- 0.02. We present the development, manufacturing and performance of spherically bent crystal analyzers (SBCAs) of 100 mm diameter and 0.5 m bending radius. The elastic strain in the crystal wafer is partially released by a "strip-bent" method where the crystal wafer is cut in strips prior to the bending and the anodic bonding process. Compared to standard 1 m SBCAs, a gain in intensity is obtained without loss of energy resolution. The gain ranges between 2.5 and 4.5, depending on the experimental conditions and the width of the emission line measured. This reduces the acquisition times required to perform high energy-resolution x-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy on ultra-dilute species, accessing concentrations of the element of interest down to, or below, the ppm (ng/mg) level., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures

The sensitivity properties of an SU(1,1) interferometer made of two cascaded parametric amplifiers, as well as of an ordinary SU(2) interferometer preceded by a squeezer and followed by an anti-squeezer, are theoretically investigated. Several possible experimental configurations are considered, such as the absence or presence of a seed beam, direct or homodyne detection scheme. In all cases we formulate the optimal conditions to achieve phase super-sensitivity, meaning a sensitivity overcoming the shot-noise limit. We show that for a given gain of the first parametric amplifier, unbalancing the interferometer by increasing the gain of the second amplifier improves the interferometer properties. In particular, a broader super-sensitivity phase range and a better overall sensitivity can be achieved by gain unbalancing., Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures

We demonstrate room-temperature strong-coupling between a mid-infrared ($\lambda$=9.9 $\mu$m) intersubband transition and the fundamental cavity mode of a metal-insulator-metal resonator. Patterning of the resonator surface enables surface-coupling of the radiation and introduces an energy dispersion which can be probed with angle-resolved reflectivity. In particular, the polaritonic dispersion presents an accessible energy minimum at k=0 where - potentially - polaritons can accumulate. We also show that it is possible to maximize the coupling of photons into the polaritonic states and - simultaneously - to engineer the position of the minimum Rabi splitting at a desired value of the in-plane wavevector. This can be precisely accomplished via a simple post-processing technique. The results are confirmed using the temporal coupled mode theory formalism and their significance in the context of the concept of strong critical coupling is highlighted.

Nowadays, integrated photonics is a key technology in quantum information processing (QIP) but achieving all-optical buses for quantum networks with efficient integration of single photon emitters remains a challenge. Photonic crystals and cavities are good candidates but do not tackle how to effectively address a nanoscale emitter. Using a nanowire nanowaveguide, we realise an hybrid nanodevice which locally excites a single photon source (SPS). The nanowire acts as a passive or active sub-wavelength waveguide to excite the quantum emitter. Our results show that localised excitation of a SPS is possible and is compared with free-space excitation. Our proof of principle experiment presents an absolute addressing efficiency {\eta}a = 10-4 only 50% lower than the one using free-space optics. This important step demonstrates that sufficient guided light in a nanowaveguide made of a semiconductor nanowire is achievable to excite a single photon source. We accomplish a hybrid system offering great potentials for electrically driven SPSs and efficient single photon collection and detection, opening the way for optimum absorption/emission of nanoscale emitters. The photon statistics of CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods nanocrystals is studied with a method involving post-selection of the photon detection events based on the photoluminescence count rate. We show that flickering between two states needs to be taken into account to interpret the single-photon emission properties. With post-selection we are able to identify two emitting states: the exciton and the charged exciton (trion), characterized by different lifetimes and different second order correlation functions. Measurements of the second order autocorrelation function at zero delay with post- selection shows a degradation of the single photon emission for CdSe/CdS dot-in-rods in a charged state that we explain by deriving the neutral and charged biexciton quantum yields., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

Images of semiconductor `dot in rods' and their small clusters are studied by measuring the second-order correlation function with a spatially resolving ICCD camera. This measurement allows one to distinguish between a single dot and a cluster and, to a certain extent, to estimate the number of dots in a cluster. A more advanced measurement is proposed, based on higher-order correlations, enabling more accurate determination of the number of dots in a small cluster. The ALICE experiment has measured quarkonium production in Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt{sNN} = 2.76 TeV and in p-Pb collisions at \sqrt{sNN} = 5.02 TeV. The measurements are performed in the dielectron de- cay channel at mid-rapidity (|yLAB| < 0.9) and in the dimuon decay channel at forward rapidity (2.5 < yLAB < 4). We focus in particular on the J/{\psi} nuclear modification factor measured both in Pb-Pb and p- -Pb collisions and on the {\Upsilon}(1S) nuclear modification factor measured in Pb-Pb collisions.

The production of muons from heavy flavour decays is measured at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4) with the muon spectrometer of the ALICE experiment at the LHC. In pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV, the measurement of the transverse momentum and rapidity differential production cross section of muons from heavy flavour decays is carried out from a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of Lint = 16.5 nb^-1 and results are compared to predictions based on perturbative QCD calculations. In Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}}= 2.76 TeV, the analysis of a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of Lint = 2.48 \mub^-1 provides a measurement of the ratio of inclusive muon yield in central to peripheral collisions (RCP) as a function of the collision centrality.

We report the recent measurements of the inclusive J/{\psi} production in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV, in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV and in Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The J/{\psi} mesons are detected down to pT = 0 GeV/c via their di-muon decay channel at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4) and via their di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9). A special emphasis is put on the nuclear modification factor which is compared to the predictions of current J/{\psi} production models.

The ALICE Collaboration has measured inclusive J/psi production in pp collisions at a center of mass energy sqrt(s)=2.76 TeV at the LHC. The results presented in this Letter refer to the rapidity ranges |y|<0.9 and 2.5

In this paper, we present an interesting method to microfabricate a tilted micro air jet generator. We used the well-know deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) technique in order to realize in a silicon substrate a double side etching. For aircraft and cars, micro air jets will take an important place for fluid control. Micro air jets are characterized by their speed, frequency and tilt. Usually, this micro air jets are produced by fluidic microsystems. We presented experimental results about micro tilted air jets. A comparison between finite element method simulation, theory and experimental results are performed to define the microsystem geometry leading a specific air jet angle.
