The recent advances in Large Language Model's generation and reasoning capabilities present an opportunity to develop truly conversational recommendation systems. However, effectively integrating recommender system knowledge into LLMs for natural language generation which is tailored towards recommendation tasks remains a challenge. This paper addresses this challenge by making two key contributions. First, we introduce a new dataset (REGEN) for natural language generation tasks in conversational recommendations. REGEN (Reviews Enhanced with GEnerative Narratives) extends the Amazon Product Reviews dataset with rich user narratives, including personalized explanations of product preferences, product endorsements for recommended items, and summaries of user purchase history. REGEN is made publicly available to facilitate further research. Furthermore, we establish benchmarks using well-known generative metrics, and perform an automated evaluation of the new dataset using a rater LLM. Second, the paper introduces a fusion architecture (CF model with an LLM) which serves as a baseline for REGEN. And to the best of our knowledge, represents the first attempt to analyze the capabilities of LLMs in understanding recommender signals and generating rich narratives. We demonstrate that LLMs can effectively learn from simple fusion architectures utilizing interaction-based CF embeddings, and this can be further enhanced using the metadata and personalization data associated with items. Our experiments show that combining CF and content embeddings leads to improvements of 4-12% in key language metrics compared to using either type of embedding individually. We also provide an analysis to interpret how CF and content embeddings contribute to this new generative task.

We propose Diffusion Model Predictive Control (D-MPC), a novel MPC approach that learns a multi-step action proposal and a multi-step dynamics model, both using diffusion models, and combines them for use in online MPC. On the popular D4RL benchmark, we show performance that is significantly better than existing model-based offline planning methods using MPC and competitive with state-of-the-art (SOTA) model-based and model-free reinforcement learning methods. We additionally illustrate D-MPC's ability to optimize novel reward functions at run time and adapt to novel dynamics, and highlight its advantages compared to existing diffusion-based planning baselines., Comment: Preprint

A framework of finite-velocity model based Boltzmann equation has been developed for convection-diffusion equations. These velocities are kept flexible and adjusted to control numerical diffusion. A flux difference splitting based kinetic scheme is then introduced for solving a wide variety of nonlinear convection-diffusion equations numerically. Based on this framework, a generalized kinetic Lax-Wendroff scheme is also derived, recovering the classical Lax-Wendroff method as one of the choices. Further, a total variation diminishing version of this kinetic flux difference splitting scheme is presented, combining it with the kinetic Lax-Wendroff scheme using a limiter function. The numerical scheme has been extensively tested and the results for benchmark test cases, for 1D and 2D nonlinear convection and convection-diffusion equations, are presented.

This paper describes our approach for SemEval-2024 Task 9: BRAINTEASER: A Novel Task Defying Common Sense. The BRAINTEASER task comprises multiple-choice Question Answering designed to evaluate the models' lateral thinking capabilities. It consists of Sentence Puzzle and Word Puzzle subtasks that require models to defy default common-sense associations and exhibit unconventional thinking. We propose a unique strategy to improve the performance of pre-trained language models, notably the Gemini 1.0 Pro Model, in both subtasks. We employ static and dynamic few-shot prompting techniques and introduce a model-generated reasoning strategy that utilizes the LLM's reasoning capabilities to improve performance. Our approach demonstrated significant improvements, showing that it performed better than the baseline models by a considerable margin but fell short of performing as well as the human annotators, thus highlighting the efficacy of the proposed strategies.

The proliferation of LLMs in various NLP tasks has sparked debates regarding their reliability, particularly in annotation tasks where biases and hallucinations may arise. In this shared task, we address the challenge of distinguishing annotations made by LLMs from those made by human domain experts in the context of COVID-19 symptom detection from tweets in Latin American Spanish. Hallucinations in large language models (LLMs) have recently become a significant problem. A recent effort in this direction is a shared task at Semeval 2024 Task 6, SHROOM, a Shared-task on Hallucinations and Related Observable Overgeneration Mistakes. This paper describes our winning solution ranked 1st and 2nd in the 2 sub-tasks of model agnostic and model aware tracks respectively. We propose a meta-regressor framework of LLMs for model evaluation and integration that achieves the highest scores on the leaderboard. We also experiment with various transformer-based models and black box methods like ChatGPT, Vectara, and others. Transformers achieve state-of-the-art accuracy and robustness across many tasks, but an understanding of the inductive biases that they have and how those biases are different from other neural network architectures remains elusive. Various neural network architectures such as fully connected networks have been found to have a simplicity bias towards simple functions of the data; one version of this simplicity bias is a spectral bias to learn simple functions in the Fourier space. In this work, we identify the notion of sensitivity of the model to random changes in the input as a notion of simplicity bias which provides a unified metric to explain the simplicity and spectral bias of transformers across different data modalities. We show that transformers have lower sensitivity than alternative architectures, such as LSTMs, MLPs and CNNs, across both vision and language tasks. We also show that low-sensitivity bias correlates with improved robustness; furthermore, it can also be used as an efficient intervention to further improve the robustness of transformers., Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures, 3 tables

Architectural Knowledge Management (AKM) involves the organized handling of information related to architectural decisions and design within a project or organization. An essential artifact of AKM is the Architecture Decision Records (ADR), which documents key design decisions. ADRs are documents that capture decision context, decision made and various aspects related to a design decision, thereby promoting transparency, collaboration, and understanding. Despite their benefits, ADR adoption in software development has been slow due to challenges like time constraints and inconsistent uptake. Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) may help bridge this adoption gap by facilitating ADR generation. However, the effectiveness of LLM for ADR generation or understanding is something that has not been explored. To this end, in this work, we perform an exploratory study that aims to investigate the feasibility of using LLM for the generation of ADRs given the decision context. In our exploratory study, we utilize GPT and T5-based models with 0-shot, few-shot, and fine-tuning approaches to generate the Decision of an ADR given its Context. Our results indicate that in a 0-shot setting, state-of-the-art models such as GPT-4 generate relevant and accurate Design Decisions, although they fall short of human-level performance. Additionally, we observe that more cost-effective models like GPT-3.5 can achieve similar outcomes in a few-shot setting, and smaller models such as Flan-T5 can yield comparable results after fine-tuning. Self-attention, the core mechanism of transformers, distinguishes them from traditional neural networks and drives their outstanding performance. Towards developing the fundamental optimization principles of self-attention, we investigate the implicit bias of gradient descent (GD) in training a self-attention layer with fixed linear decoder in binary classification. Drawing inspiration from the study of GD in linear logistic regression over separable data, recent work demonstrates that as the number of iterations $t$ approaches infinity, the key-query matrix $W_t$ converges locally (with respect to the initialization direction) to a hard-margin SVM solution $W_{mm}$. Our work enhances this result in four aspects. Firstly, we identify non-trivial data settings for which convergence is provably global, thus shedding light on the optimization landscape. Secondly, we provide the first finite-time convergence rate for $W_t$ to $W_{mm}$, along with quantifying the rate of sparsification in the attention map. Thirdly, through an analysis of normalized GD and Polyak step-size, we demonstrate analytically that adaptive step-size rules can accelerate the convergence of self-attention. Additionally, we remove the restriction of prior work on a fixed linear decoder. Our results reinforce the implicit-bias perspective of self-attention and strengthen its connections to implicit-bias in linear logistic regression, despite the intricate non-convex nature of the former., Comment: 41 pages, 7 figures

Ensuring reliable confidence scores from deep neural networks is of paramount significance in critical decision-making systems, particularly in real-world domains such as healthcare. Recent literature on calibrating deep segmentation networks has resulted in substantial progress. Nevertheless, these approaches are strongly inspired by the advancements in classification tasks, and thus their uncertainty is usually modeled by leveraging the information of individual pixels, disregarding the local structure of the object of interest. Indeed, only the recent Spatially Varying Label Smoothing (SVLS) approach considers pixel spatial relationships across classes, by softening the pixel label assignments with a discrete spatial Gaussian kernel. In this work, we first present a constrained optimization perspective of SVLS and demonstrate that it enforces an implicit constraint on soft class proportions of surrounding pixels. Furthermore, our analysis shows that SVLS lacks a mechanism to balance the contribution of the constraint with the primary objective, potentially hindering the optimization process. Based on these observations, we propose NACL (Neighbor Aware CaLibration), a principled and simple solution based on equality constraints on the logit values, which enables to control explicitly both the enforced constraint and the weight of the penalty, offering more flexibility. Comprehensive experiments on a wide variety of well-known segmentation benchmarks demonstrate the superior calibration performance of the proposed approach, without affecting its discriminative power. Lack of diverse perspectives causes neutrality bias in Wikipedia content leading to millions of worldwide readers getting exposed by potentially inaccurate information. Hence, neutrality bias detection and mitigation is a critical problem. Although previous studies have proposed effective solutions for English, no work exists for Indian languages. First, we contribute two large datasets, mWikiBias and mWNC, covering 8 languages, for the bias detection and mitigation tasks respectively. Next, we investigate the effectiveness of popular multilingual Transformer-based models for the two tasks by modeling detection as a binary classification problem and mitigation as a style transfer problem. We make the code and data publicly available.

Neural networks (NNs) are known to exhibit simplicity bias where they tend to prefer learning 'simple' features over more 'complex' ones, even when the latter may be more informative. Simplicity bias can lead to the model making biased predictions which have poor out-of-distribution (OOD) generalization. To address this, we propose a framework that encourages the model to use a more diverse set of features to make predictions. We first train a simple model, and then regularize the conditional mutual information with respect to it to obtain the final model. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this framework in various problem settings and real-world applications, showing that it effectively addresses simplicity bias and leads to more features being used, enhances OOD generalization, and improves subgroup robustness and fairness. Patterns of microcircuitry suggest that the brain has an array of repeated canonical computational units. Yet neural representations are distributed, so the relevant computations may only be related indirectly to single-neuron transformations. It thus remains an open challenge how to define canonical distributed computations. We integrate normative and algorithmic theories of neural computation into a mathematical framework for inferring canonical distributed computations from large-scale neural activity patterns. At the normative level, we hypothesize that the brain creates a structured internal model of its environment, positing latent causes that explain its sensory inputs, and uses those sensory inputs to infer the latent causes. At the algorithmic level, we propose that this inference process is a nonlinear message-passing algorithm on a graph-structured model of the world. Given a time series of neural activity during a perceptual inference task, our framework finds (i) the neural representation of relevant latent variables, (ii) interactions between these variables that define the brain's internal model of the world, and (iii) message-functions specifying the inference algorithm. These targeted computational properties are then statistically distinguishable due to the symmetries inherent in any canonical computation, up to a global transformation. As a demonstration, we simulate recordings for a model brain that implicitly implements an approximate inference algorithm on a probabilistic graphical model. Given its external inputs and noisy neural activity, we recover the latent variables, their neural representation and dynamics, and canonical message-functions. We highlight features of experimental design needed to successfully extract canonical computations from neural data. In-context learning (ICL) is one of the most powerful and most unexpected capabilities to emerge in recent transformer-based large language models (LLMs). Yet the mechanisms that underlie it are poorly understood. In this paper, we demonstrate that comparable ICL capabilities can be acquired by an alternative sequence prediction learning method using clone-structured causal graphs (CSCGs). Moreover, a key property of CSCGs is that, unlike transformer-based LLMs, they are {\em interpretable}, which considerably simplifies the task of explaining how ICL works. Specifically, we show that it uses a combination of (a) learning template (schema) circuits for pattern completion, (b) retrieving relevant templates in a context-sensitive manner, and (c) rebinding of novel tokens to appropriate slots in the templates. We go on to marshall evidence for the hypothesis that similar mechanisms underlie ICL in LLMs. For example, we find that, with CSCGs as with LLMs, different capabilities emerge at different levels of overparameterization, suggesting that overparameterization helps in learning more complex template (schema) circuits. By showing how ICL can be achieved with small models and datasets, we open up a path to novel architectures, and take a vital step towards a more general understanding of the mechanics behind this important capability.

Factual consistency is one of the most important requirements when editing high quality documents. It is extremely important for automatic text generation systems like summarization, question answering, dialog modeling, and language modeling. Still, automated factual inconsistency detection is rather under-studied. Existing work has focused on (a) finding fake news keeping a knowledge base in context, or (b) detecting broad contradiction (as part of natural language inference literature). However, there has been no work on detecting and explaining types of factual inconsistencies in text, without any knowledge base in context. In this paper, we leverage existing work in linguistics to formally define five types of factual inconsistencies. Based on this categorization, we contribute a novel dataset, FICLE (Factual Inconsistency CLassification with Explanation), with ~8K samples where each sample consists of two sentences (claim and context) annotated with type and span of inconsistency. When the inconsistency relates to an entity type, it is labeled as well at two levels (coarse and fine-grained). Further, we leverage this dataset to train a pipeline of four neural models to predict inconsistency type with explanations, given a (claim, context) sentence pair. Explanations include inconsistent claim fact triple, inconsistent context span, inconsistent claim component, coarse and fine-grained inconsistent entity types. The proposed system first predicts inconsistent spans from claim and context; and then uses them to predict inconsistency types and inconsistent entity types (when inconsistency is due to entities). We experiment with multiple Transformer-based natural language classification as well as generative models, and find that DeBERTa performs the best. Named Entity Recognition(NER) is a task of recognizing entities at a token level in a sentence. This paper focuses on solving NER tasks in a multilingual setting for complex named entities. Our team, LLM-RM participated in the recently organized SemEval 2023 task, Task 2: MultiCoNER II,Multilingual Complex Named Entity Recognition. With the advent of multilingual models like mBART, mT5, IndicBART etc., summarization in low resource Indian languages is getting a lot of attention now a days. But still the number of datasets is low in number. In this work, we (Team HakunaMatata) study how these multilingual models perform on the datasets which have Indian languages as source and target text while performing summarization. We experimented with IndicBART and mT5 models to perform the experiments and report the ROUGE-1, ROUGE-2, ROUGE-3 and ROUGE-4 scores as a performance metric.

Commonsense question-answering (QA) methods combine the power of pre-trained Language Models (LM) with the reasoning provided by Knowledge Graphs (KG). A typical approach collects nodes relevant to the QA pair from a KG to form a Working Graph (WG) followed by reasoning using Graph Neural Networks(GNNs). This faces two major challenges: (i) it is difficult to capture all the information from the QA in the WG, and (ii) the WG contains some irrelevant nodes from the KG. To address these, we propose GrapeQA with two simple improvements on the WG: (i) Prominent Entities for Graph Augmentation identifies relevant text chunks from the QA pair and augments the WG with corresponding latent representations from the LM, and (ii) Context-Aware Node Pruning removes nodes that are less relevant to the QA pair. We evaluate our results on OpenBookQA, CommonsenseQA and MedQA-USMLE and see that GrapeQA shows consistent improvements over its LM + KG predecessor (QA-GNN in particular) and large improvements on OpenBookQA.

Lack of encyclopedic text contributors, especially on Wikipedia, makes automated text generation for low resource (LR) languages a critical problem. Existing work on Wikipedia text generation has focused on English only where English reference articles are summarized to generate English Wikipedia pages. But, for low-resource languages, the scarcity of reference articles makes monolingual summarization ineffective in solving this problem. Hence, in this work, we propose XWikiGen, which is the task of cross-lingual multi-document summarization of text from multiple reference articles, written in various languages, to generate Wikipedia-style text. Accordingly, we contribute a benchmark dataset, XWikiRef, spanning ~69K Wikipedia articles covering five domains and eight languages. We harness this dataset to train a two-stage system where the input is a set of citations and a section title and the output is a section-specific LR summary. The proposed system is based on a novel idea of neural unsupervised extractive summarization to coarsely identify salient information followed by a neural abstractive model to generate the section-specific text. Extensive experiments show that multi-domain training is better than the multi-lingual setup on average.

Transferring latent structure from one environment or problem to another is a mechanism by which humans and animals generalize with very little data. Inspired by cognitive and neurobiological insights, we propose graph schemas as a mechanism of abstraction for transfer learning. Graph schemas start with latent graph learning where perceptually aliased observations are disambiguated in the latent space using contextual information. Latent graph learning is also emerging as a new computational model of the hippocampus to explain map learning and transitive inference. Our insight is that a latent graph can be treated as a flexible template -- a schema -- that models concepts and behaviors, with slots that bind groups of latent nodes to the specific observations or groundings. By treating learned latent graphs (schemas) as prior knowledge, new environments can be quickly learned as compositions of schemas and their newly learned bindings. We evaluate graph schemas on two previously published challenging tasks: the memory & planning game and one-shot StreetLearn, which are designed to test rapid task solving in novel environments. Graph schemas can be learned in far fewer episodes than previous baselines, and can model and plan in a few steps in novel variations of these tasks. We also demonstrate learning, matching, and reusing graph schemas in more challenging 2D and 3D environments with extensive perceptual aliasing and size variations, and show how different schemas can be composed to model larger and more complex environments. Massive knowledge graphs like Wikidata attempt to capture world knowledge about multiple entities. Recent approaches concentrate on automatically enriching these KGs from text. However a lot of information present in the form of natural text in low resource languages is often missed out. Cross Lingual Information Extraction aims at extracting factual information in the form of English triples from low resource Indian Language text. Despite its massive potential, progress made on this task is lagging when compared to Monolingual Information Extraction. Clause recommendation is the problem of recommending a clause to a legal contract, given the context of the contract in question and the clause type to which the clause should belong. With not much prior work being done toward the generation of legal contracts, this problem was proposed as a first step toward the bigger problem of contract generation. As an open-ended text generation problem, the distinguishing characteristics of this problem lie in the nature of legal language as a sublanguage and the considerable similarity of textual content within the clauses of a specific type. This similarity aspect in legal clauses drives us to investigate the importance of similar contracts' representation for recommending clauses. Generating domain-specific content such as legal clauses based on minimal user-provided information can be of significant benefit in automating legal contract generation. In this paper, we propose a controllable graph-based mechanism that can generate legal clauses using only the topic or type of the legal clauses. Our pipeline consists of two stages involving a graph-based planner followed by a clause generator. The planner outlines the content of a legal clause as a sequence of keywords in the order of generic to more specific clause information based on the input topic using a controllable graph-based mechanism. The generation stage takes in a given plan and generates a clause. The pipeline consists of a graph-based planner followed by text generation. Multiple studies have focused on predicting the prospective popularity of an online document as a whole, without paying attention to the contributions of its individual parts. We introduce the task of proactively forecasting popularities of sentences within online news documents solely utilizing their natural language content. We model sentence-specific popularity forecasting as a sequence regression task. For training our models, we curate InfoPop, the first dataset containing popularity labels for over 1.7 million sentences from over 50,000 online news documents. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first dataset automatically created using streams of incoming search engine queries to generate sentence-level popularity annotations. We propose a novel transfer learning approach involving sentence salience prediction as an auxiliary task. Our proposed technique coupled with a BERT-based neural model exceeds nDCG values of 0.8 for proactive sentence-specific popularity forecasting. Notably, our study presents a non-trivial takeaway: though popularity and salience are different concepts, transfer learning from salience prediction enhances popularity forecasting. Fascinating and puzzling phenomena, such as landmark vector cells, splitter cells, and event-specific representations to name a few, are regularly discovered in the hippocampus. Without a unifying principle that can explain these divergent observations, each experiment seemingly discovers a new anomaly or coding type. Here, we provide a unifying principle that the mental representation of space is an emergent property of latent higher-order sequence learning. Treating space as a sequence resolves myriad phenomena, and suggests that the place-field mapping methodology where sequential neuron responses are interpreted in spatial and Euclidean terms might itself be a source of anomalies. Our model, called Clone-structured Causal Graph (CSCG), uses a specific higher-order graph scaffolding to learn latent representations by mapping sensory inputs to unique contexts. Learning to compress sequential and episodic experiences using CSCGs result in the emergence of cognitive maps - mental representations of spatial and conceptual relationships in an environment that are suited for planning, introspection, consolidation, and abstraction. We demonstrate that over a dozen different hippocampal phenomena, ranging from those reported in classic experiments to the most recent ones, are succinctly and mechanistically explained by our model.

Code-mixed machine translation has become an important task in multilingual communities and extending the task of machine translation to code mixed data has become a common task for these languages. In the shared tasks of WMT 2022, we try to tackle the same for both English + Hindi to Hinglish and Hinglish to English. The first task dealt with both Roman and Devanagari script as we had monolingual data in both English and Hindi whereas the second task only had data in Roman script. To our knowledge, we achieved one of the top ROUGE-L and WER scores for the first task of Monolingual to Code-Mixed machine translation. In this paper, we discuss the use of mBART with some special pre-processing and post-processing (transliteration from Devanagari to Roman) for the first task in detail and the experiments that we performed for the second task of translating code-mixed Hinglish to monolingual English.

Multiple business scenarios require an automated generation of descriptive human-readable text from structured input data. Hence, fact-to-text generation systems have been developed for various downstream tasks like generating soccer reports, weather and financial reports, medical reports, person biographies, etc. Unfortunately, previous work on fact-to-text (F2T) generation has focused primarily on English mainly due to the high availability of relevant datasets. Only recently, the problem of cross-lingual fact-to-text (XF2T) was proposed for generation across multiple languages alongwith a dataset, XALIGN for eight languages. However, there has been no rigorous work on the actual XF2T generation problem. We extend XALIGN dataset with annotated data for four more languages: Punjabi, Malayalam, Assamese and Oriya. We conduct an extensive study using popular Transformer-based text generation models on our extended multi-lingual dataset, which we call XALIGNV2. Further, we investigate the performance of different text generation strategies: multiple variations of pretraining, fact-aware embeddings and structure-aware input encoding. Our extensive experiments show that a multi-lingual mT5 model which uses fact-aware embeddings with structure-aware input encoding leads to best results on average across the twelve languages. We make our code, dataset and model publicly available, and hope that this will help advance further research in this critical area.

Customers' reviews and comments are important for businesses to understand users' sentiment about the products and services. However, this data needs to be analyzed to assess the sentiment associated with topics/aspects to provide efficient customer assistance. LDA and LSA fail to capture the semantic relationship and are not specific to any domain. In this study, we evaluate BERTopic, a novel method that generates topics using sentence embeddings on Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) data. Our work shows that BERTopic is flexible and yet provides meaningful and diverse topics compared to LDA and LSA. Furthermore, domain-specific pre-trained embeddings (FinBERT) yield even better topics. Multiple studies have demonstrated that obtaining standardized fetal brain biometry from mid-trimester ultrasonography (USG) examination is key for the reliable assessment of fetal neurodevelopment and the screening of central nervous system (CNS) anomalies. Obtaining these measurements is highly subjective, expertise-driven, and requires years of training experience, limiting quality prenatal care for all pregnant mothers. In this study, we propose a deep learning (DL) approach to compute 3 key fetal brain biometry from the 2D USG images of the transcerebellar plane (TC) through the accurate and automated caliper placement (2 per biometry) by modeling it as a landmark detection problem. We leveraged clinically relevant biometric constraints (relationship between caliper points) and domain-relevant data augmentation to improve the accuracy of a U-Net DL model (trained/tested on: 596 images, 473 subjects/143 images, 143 subjects). We performed multiple experiments demonstrating the effect of the DL backbone, data augmentation, generalizability and benchmarked against a recent state-of-the-art approach through extensive clinical validation (DL vs. 7 experienced clinicians). For all cases, the mean errors in the placement of the individual caliper points and the computed biometry were comparable to error rates among clinicians. This paper describes progress, challenges and opportunities of using policy to advance educational equity and excellence at scale in the United States. It begins with a look-back that examines two key elements of the standards-based education (SBE) era: First, it traces policy shifts and implementation challenges of the SBE era. Second, it examines student achievement trends over 30 years, with particular attention to learning outcomes for Black, Hispanic, and students from low-income backgrounds. The paper then provides a landscape analysis of key stakeholders that are actively engaged in shaping, guiding, developing and implementing educational improvement efforts. The landscape analysis also identifies those who have not been adequately involved but should be going forward, such as grassroots and community leaders, parents, teachers and students, particularly from people of color. To conclude, the report recommends bringing together a cross-section of diverse stakeholders from key educational sectors--such as policymakers, community-organizers, practitioners and researchers, students and families--to form a multi-year listening and learning community that engages in a series of field-based learning experiences. The learning engagements would allow stakeholders to consider strategies to: (1) broaden the vision of youth development; (2) build supports for equity; and (3) bolster community engagement.

Quality assessment of prenatal ultrasonography is essential for the screening of fetal central nervous system (CNS) anomalies. The interpretation of fetal brain structures is highly subjective, expertise-driven, and requires years of training experience, limiting quality prenatal care for all pregnant mothers. With recent advancement in Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically deep learning (DL), assistance in precise anatomy identification through semantic segmentation essential for the reliable assessment of growth and neurodevelopment, and detection of structural abnormalities have been proposed. However, existing works only identify certain structures (e.g., cavum septum pellucidum, lateral ventricles, cerebellum) from either of the axial views (transventricular, transcerebellar), limiting the scope for a thorough anatomical assessment as per practice guidelines necessary for the screening of CNS anomalies. Further, existing works do not analyze the generalizability of these DL algorithms across images from multiple ultrasound devices and centers, thus, limiting their real-world clinical impact. In this study, we propose a DL based segmentation framework for the automated segmentation of 10 key fetal brain structures from 2 axial planes from fetal brain USG images (2D). We developed a custom U-Net variant that uses inceptionv4 block as a feature extractor and leverages custom domain-specific data augmentation. Quantitatively, the mean (10 structures; test sets 1/2/3/4) Dice-coefficients were: 0.827, 0.802, 0.731, 0.783. Irrespective of the USG device/center, the DL segmentations were qualitatively comparable to their manual segmentations. Multiple critical scenarios (like Wikipedia text generation given English Infoboxes) need automated generation of descriptive text in low resource (LR) languages from English fact triples. Previous work has focused on English fact-to-text (F2T) generation. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no previous attempt on cross-lingual alignment or generation for LR languages. Building an effective cross-lingual F2T (XF2T) system requires alignment between English structured facts and LR sentences. We propose two unsupervised methods for cross-lingual alignment. We contribute XALIGN, an XF2T dataset with 0.45M pairs across 8 languages, of which 5402 pairs have been manually annotated. Most of the cloud service providers store data in plain text format or in secured manner but client will not be known the method in which it is stored. Homomorphic encryption is the encryption which allows the operation on cipher text thus generating an encrypted result which when decrypted, matches the result of operations performed on the plaintext. This is sometimes a desirable feature in modern communication system architectures. There are several homomorphic algorithms, one of them is AHEE. User need to use their own encryption algorithm to secure their data if required. The data needs to be decrypted whenever it is to be processed. In this paper, we present a computationally efficient technique based on the \emph{Method of Lines} (MOL) for the approximation of the Bermudan option values via the associated partial differential equations (PDEs). The MOL converts the Black Scholes PDE to a system of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). The solution of the system of ODEs so obtained only requires spatial discretization and avoids discretization in time. Additionally, the exact solution of the ODEs can be obtained efficiently using the exponential matrix operation, making the method computationally attractive and straightforward to implement. An essential advantage of the proposed approach is that the associated Greeks can be computed with minimal additional computations. We illustrate, through numerical experiments, the efficacy of the proposed method in pricing and computation of the sensitivities for a European call, cash-or-nothing, powered option, and Bermudan put option.

Across the social sectors, a growing number of organizations are embracing continuous improvement approaches and organizing themselves as networks in order to attack complex problems. To succeed, networks must learn quickly by studying their own practices, continuously adapting to changing circumstances within their organizations and in the broader environment, and incorporating this learning into their ongoing work. In this paper, we describe an integrated approach--which we call Evidence for Improvement (EFI)--that explains how a variety of tools and practices drawn from diverse forms of program evaluation can inform the leaders of these networks in advancing productive change. We propose that improvement networks can be conceptualized and measured using a three-level nested model composed of a working theory of improvement, an improvement enterprise, and environmental contexts. As they engage in inquiry targeted at each level, those with evaluative expertise should become authentic partners with improvement leaders and fully align their analytic efforts with the improvement activities and social contexts of the network. The EFI approach we describe is designed to enhance a network's internal learning processes and, in turn, lead to more positive impacts for educators and students. It has implications for improvement practitioners, evaluators, and funders.

Embedded systems or micro controller based modules have become increasingly prevalent in our daily lives. However, the security of embedded devices as well as the authenticity of hardware has become an increasing concern within the growing Internet of Things (IoT) space. In this paper we setup an experiment environment where SLC flash program disturbance is observed. We discovered that intra-page disturbance is easier to be produced than inter-page disturbance. We also observed that adjacent pages are paired in (2n, 2n+1) manner, and disturbance only occurs within a pair. Lastly, we found that as page number increases from 0 to 63, it becomes more difficult to observe the first bit flip within a page, and thus more difficult to achieve the disturbance stable state.

A low diffusive flux difference splitting based kinetic scheme is developed based on a discrete velocity Boltzmann equation, with a novel three velocity model. While two discrete velocities are used for upwinding, the third discrete velocity is utilized to introduce appropriate additional numerical diffusion only in the expansion regions, identified using relative entropy (Kullback-Liebler divergence) at the cell-interface, along with the estimation of physical entropy. This strategy provides an interesting alternative to entropy fix, which is typically needed for low diffusive schemes. Grid-aligned steady discontinuities are captured exactly by fixing the primary numerical diffusion such that flux equivalence leads to zero numerical diffusion across discontinuities. Results for bench-mark test problems are presented for inviscid and viscous compressible flows.

Coherence is an important aspect of text quality and is crucial for ensuring its readability. It is essential desirable for outputs from text generation systems like summarization, question answering, machine translation, question generation, table-to-text, etc. An automated coherence scoring model is also helpful in essay scoring or providing writing feedback. A large body of previous work has leveraged entity-based methods, syntactic patterns, discourse relations, and more recently traditional deep learning architectures for text coherence assessment. Previous work suffers from drawbacks like the inability to handle long-range dependencies, out-of-vocabulary words, or model sequence information. We hypothesize that coherence assessment is a cognitively complex task that requires deeper models and can benefit from other related tasks. Accordingly, in this paper, we propose four different Transformer-based architectures for the task: vanilla Transformer, hierarchical Transformer, multi-task learning-based model, and a model with fact-based input representation. Our experiments with popular benchmark datasets across multiple domains on four different coherence assessment tasks demonstrate that our models achieve state-of-the-art results outperforming existing models by a good margin., Comment: added link to the codebase

Deep metric learning has been effectively used to learn distance metrics for different visual tasks like image retrieval, clustering, etc. In order to aid the training process, existing methods either use a hard mining strategy to extract the most informative samples or seek to generate hard synthetics using an additional network. Such approaches face different challenges and can lead to biased embeddings in the former case, and (i) harder optimization (ii) slower training speed (iii) higher model complexity in the latter case. In order to overcome these challenges, we propose a novel approach that looks for optimal hard negatives (LoOp) in the embedding space, taking full advantage of each tuple by calculating the minimum distance between a pair of positives and a pair of negatives. Unlike mining-based methods, our approach considers the entire space between pairs of embeddings to calculate the optimal hard negatives. Here we explore the structural, magnetic and dielectric properties of Co based compound Na$_5$Co$_{15.5}$Te$_6$O$_{36}$ as a candidate of short-range magnetic correlations driven development of dielectric anomaly above N$\acute{e}$el temperature of ($T_N$=) 50 K. Low temperature neutron powder diffraction (NPD) in zero applied magnetic field clearly indicates that the canted spin structure is responsible for the antiferromagnetic transition and partially occupied Co form short range magnetic correlation with other Co, which further facilitates the structural distortion and consequent development of dielectric anomaly above antiferromagnetic transition. Additionally, the temperature dependent magnetic heat capacity and electron spin resonance measurements reveal the presence of short-range magnetic correlations which coincides with an anomaly in the dielectric constant vs temperature curve. Moreover, significant changes in the lattice parameters are also observed around the same temperature, indicating presence of noticeable spin-lattice coupling. Further, sharp jump in the magnetic field dependent magnetization clearly indicates the presence of metamagnetic transition and magnetic field dependent NPD confirms that rotations of Co spins with applied magnetic field are responsible for this metamagnetic phase transition. As a result, this transition causes the magnetocaloric effect to be developed in the system, which is suitable for the application in low temperature refrigeration.

We investigate a specific finite element model to study the thermoelastic behavior of an elastic body within the context of nonlinear strain-limiting constitutive relation. As a special subclass of implicit relations, the thermoelastic response of our interest is such that stresses can be arbitrarily large, but strains remain small, especially in the neighborhood of crack-tips. Thus, the proposed model can be inherently consistent with the assumption of the small strain theory. In the present communication, we consider a two-dimensional coupled system-linear and quasilinear partial differential equations for temperature and displacements, respectively. Two distinct temperature distributions of the Dirichlet type are considered for boundary condition, and a standard finite element method of continuous Galerkin is employed to obtain the numerical solutions for the field variables. For a domain with an edge-crack, we find that the near-tip strain growth of our model is much slower than the growth of stress, which is the salient feature compared to the inconsistent results of the classical linearized description of the elastic body. Current study can provide a theoretical and computational framework to develop physically meaningful models and examine other coupled multi-physics such as an evolution of complex network of cracks induced by thermal shocks.

We propose a knowledge-based approach for extraction of Cause-Effect (CE) relations from biomedical text. Our approach is a combination of an unsupervised machine learning technique to discover causal triggers and a set of high-precision linguistic rules to identify cause/effect arguments of these causal triggers. We evaluate our approach using a corpus of 58,761 Leukaemia-related PubMed abstracts consisting of 568,528 sentences. We could extract 152,655 CE triplets from this corpus where each triplet consists of a cause phrase, an effect phrase and a causal trigger. As compared to the existing knowledge base - SemMedDB (Kilicoglu et al., 2012), the number of extractions are almost twice. Moreover, the proposed approach outperformed the existing technique SemRep (Rindflesch and Fiszman, 2003) on a dataset of 500 sentences.

Many physical, biological and neural systems behave as coupled oscillators, with characteristic phase coupling across different frequencies. Methods such as $n:m$ phase locking value and bi-phase locking value have previously been proposed to quantify phase coupling between two resonant frequencies (e.g. $f$, $2f/3$) and across three frequencies (e.g. $f_1$, $f_2$, $f_1+f_2$), respectively. However, the existing phase coupling metrics have their limitations and limited applications. They cannot be used to detect or quantify phase coupling across multiple frequencies (e.g. $f_1$, $f_2$, $f_3$, $f_4$, $f_1+f_2+f_3-f_4$), or coupling that involves non-integer multiples of the frequencies (e.g. $f_1$, $f_2$, $2f_1/3+f_2/3$). To address the gap, this paper proposes a generalized approach, named multi-phase locking value (M-PLV), for the quantification of various types of instantaneous multi-frequency phase coupling. Different from most instantaneous phase coupling metrics that measure the simultaneous phase coupling, the proposed M-PLV method also allows the detection of delayed phase coupling and the associated time lag between coupled oscillators. The M-PLV has been tested on cases where synthetic coupled signals are generated using white Gaussian signals, and a system comprised of multiple coupled R\"ossler oscillators. Results indicate that the M-PLV can provide a reliable estimation of the time window and frequency combination where the phase coupling is significant, as well as a precise determination of time lag in the case of delayed coupling. The evolution of social media platforms have empowered everyone to access information easily. Social media users can easily share information with the rest of the world. This may sometimes encourage spread of fake news, which can result in undesirable consequences. In this work, we train models which can identify health news related to COVID-19 pandemic as real or fake. Our models achieve a high F1-score of 98.64%. Automatic text summarization has been widely studied as an important task in natural language processing. Traditionally, various feature engineering and machine learning based systems have been proposed for extractive as well as abstractive text summarization. Recently, deep learning based, specifically Transformer-based systems have been immensely popular. Summarization is a cognitively challenging task - extracting summary worthy sentences is laborious, and expressing semantics in brief when doing abstractive summarization is complicated. In this paper, we specifically look at the problem of summarizing scientific research papers from multiple domains. We differentiate between two types of summaries, namely, (a) LaySumm: A very short summary that captures the essence of the research paper in layman terms restricting overtly specific technical jargon and (b) LongSumm: A much longer detailed summary aimed at providing specific insights into various ideas touched upon in the paper. While leveraging latest Transformer-based models, our systems are simple, intuitive and based on how specific paper sections contribute to human summaries of the two types described above. Evaluations against gold standard summaries using ROUGE metrics prove the effectiveness of our approach. Identifying adverse and hostile content on the web and more particularly, on social media, has become a problem of paramount interest in recent years. With their ever increasing popularity, fine-tuning of pretrained Transformer-based encoder models with a classifier head are gradually becoming the new baseline for natural language classification tasks. In our work, we explore the gains attributed to Task Adaptive Pretraining (TAPT) prior to fine-tuning of Transformer-based architectures. We specifically study two problems, namely, (a) Coarse binary classification of Hindi Tweets into Hostile or Not, and (b) Fine-grained multi-label classification of Tweets into four categories: hate, fake, offensive, and defamation. Building up on an architecture which takes emojis and segmented hashtags into consideration for classification, we are able to experimentally showcase the performance upgrades due to TAPT. Detecting and classifying instances of hate in social media text has been a problem of interest in Natural Language Processing in the recent years. Our work leverages state of the art Transformer language models to identify hate speech in a multilingual setting. Capturing the intent of a post or a comment on social media involves careful evaluation of the language style, semantic content and additional pointers such as hashtags and emojis. In this paper, we look at the problem of identifying whether a Twitter post is hateful and offensive or not. We further discriminate the detected toxic content into one of the following three classes: (a) Hate Speech (HATE), (b) Offensive (OFFN) and (c) Profane (PRFN). With a pre-trained multilingual Transformer-based text encoder at the base, we are able to successfully identify and classify hate speech from multiple languages. On the provided testing corpora, we achieve Macro F1 scores of 90.29, 81.87 and 75.40 for English, German and Hindi respectively while performing hate speech detection and of 60.70, 53.28 and 49.74 during fine-grained classification. In our experiments, we show the efficacy of Perspective API features for hate speech classification and the effects of exploiting a multilingual training scheme. This paper reviews the second AIM learned ISP challenge and provides the description of the proposed solutions and results. The participating teams were solving a real-world RAW-to-RGB mapping problem, where to goal was to map the original low-quality RAW images captured by the Huawei P20 device to the same photos obtained with the Canon 5D DSLR camera. The considered task embraced a number of complex computer vision subtasks, such as image demosaicing, denoising, white balancing, color and contrast correction, demoireing, etc. The target metric used in this challenge combined fidelity scores (PSNR and SSIM) with solutions' perceptual results measured in a user study. Compressive sensing (CS) is widely used to reduce the acquisition time of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Although state-of-the-art deep learning based methods have been able to obtain fast, high-quality reconstruction of CS-MR images, their main drawback is that they treat complex-valued MRI data as real-valued entities. Most methods either extract the magnitude from the complex-valued entities or concatenate them as two real-valued channels. In both the cases, the phase content, which links the real and imaginary parts of the complex-valued entities, is discarded. In order to address the fundamental problem of real-valued deep networks, i.e. their inability to process complex-valued data, we propose a novel framework based on a complex-valued generative adversarial network (Co-VeGAN). Our model can process complex-valued input, which enables it to perform high-quality reconstruction of the CS-MR images. Further, considering that phase is a crucial component of complex-valued entities, we propose a novel complex-valued activation function, which is sensitive to the phase of the input. Extensive evaluation of the proposed approach on different datasets using various sampling masks demonstrates that the proposed model significantly outperforms the existing CS-MRI reconstruction techniques in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio as well as structural similarity index. Further, it uses significantly fewer trainable parameters to do so, as compared to the real-valued deep learning based methods.
