Muon spin rotation/relaxation measurements were performed to investigate magnetic properties of FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ thin films on LaAlO$_3$. A drastic decrease of the initial asymmetry was observed together with the peak structure in the temperature dependence of the relaxation rate of muon spins almost at the same temperature where kink anomalies were observed in the temperature dependent resistivity. With increasing S content, the anomaly temperature increased and the magnetic fluctuations at the lowest temperature were suppressed. These results show that the S substitution induces magnetism at low temperatures in FeSe$_{1-x}$S$_x$ thin films. Although the behaviors of the magnetic and nematic phases in FeSe films towards chemical pressure by S substitution are similar to those for bulk FeSe towards hydrostatic pressure, the behavior of $T_{\mathrm c}$ is significantly different between these systems. Our results demonstrate that the detailed comparative investigation among physical and chemical pressure effects is essentially important to understand the interplay of the magnetism, the nematicity and the superconductivity in iron chalcogenides., Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures

We employ the Monte Carlo particle collision code DPMJET3.04 to determine the multiplicity spectra of various secondary particles (in addition to $\pi^0$'s) with $\gamma$'s as the final decay state, that are produced in cosmic-ray ($p$'s and $\alpha$'s) interactions with the interstellar medium. We derive an easy-to-use $\gamma$-ray production matrix for cosmic rays with energies up to about 10 PeV. This $\gamma$-ray production matrix is applied to the GeV excess in diffuse Galactic $\gamma$-rays observed by EGRET, and we conclude the non-$\pi^0$ decay components are insufficient to explain the GeV excess, although they have contributed a different spectrum from the $\pi^0$-decay component. We also test the hypothesis that the TeV-band $\gamma$-ray emission of the shell-type SNR RX J1713.7-3946 observed with HESS is caused by hadronic cosmic rays which are accelerated by a cosmic-ray modified shock. By the $\chi^2$ statistics, we find a continuously softening spectrum is strongly preferred, in contrast to expectations. In this work we study the individual contribution to diffuse $\gamma$-ray emission from the secondary products in hadronic interactions generated by cosmic rays (CRs), in addition to the contribution of $\pi^0$ decay via the decay mode $\pi^0 \to 2\gamma$. For that purpose we employ the Monte Carlo particle collision code DPMJET3.04 to determine the multiplicity spectra of various secondary particles with $\gamma$'s as the final decay state, that result from inelastic collisions between cosmic-ray protons and Helium nuclei and the interstellar medium with standard composition. We thus derive an easy-to-use $\gamma$-ray production matrix for cosmic ray up to about 10 PeV, that can be used to interpret the $\gamma$-ray spectra of diffuse galactic emission and supernova remnants (SNR). We apply the $\gamma$-ray production matrix to the GeV excess in diffuse galactic $\gamma$-rays that was seen with EGRET. Although the non-$\pi^0$ contributions to the total emission have a different spectrum than the $\pi^0$-decay component, they are insufficient to explain the GeV excess. We also test the hypothesis that the TeV-band $\gamma$-ray emission of the shell-type SNR RX J1713-3946, that was observed with HESS, is caused by shock-accelerated hadronic cosmic rays. This scenario implies a very high efficacy of particle acceleration, so the particle spectrum is expected to continuously harden toward high energies on account of cosmic-ray modification of the shock. Using the $\chi^2$ statistic we find that a continuously softening spectrum is strongly preferred, in contrast to expectations. High-energy x-ray diffraction experiments peformed on rhombohedral (1-x)Pb(Zn1/3Nb2/3)O3-xPbTiO3(PZN-xPT) crystals with x= 4.5 and 8% show that an electric field applied along the [001] direction induces the tetragonal phase, as proposed by Park and Shrout. Our experiments reveal that in 4.5PT such phase change occurs via a third phase with monoclinic symmetry, MA, which is observed at intermediate field values. This is in agreement with first-principles calculations by Fu and Cohen predicting the rotation of the polarization between the rhombohedral and tetragonal phases in this material. A different polarization path between the rhombohedral and tetragonal phases, through a second monoclinic phase, MC, has been previously reported in 8PT. The microscopic characterization of these crystals allows us to explain the ultra-high macroscopic strain observed in PZN-x%PT under an electric field. Moreover, some unusual scattering profiles displayed by exceptionally good crystals, are experimental evidence of the high anharmonicities and near-degeneracy of the different phases in these extremely deformable materials., Comment: REVTeX4, 8 two-column pages, 8 figures embedded

Recent neutron scattering measurements performed on the relaxor ferroelectric Pb[(Zn1/3Nb2/3)0.92Ti0.08]O3 (PZN-8%PT) in its cubic phase at 500 K, have revealed an anomalous ridge of inelastic scattering centered ~0.2 A-1 from the zone center (Gehring et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 84, 5216 (2000)). This ridge of scattering resembles a waterfall when plotted as a phonon dispersion diagram, and extends vertically from the transverse acoustic (TA) branch near 4 meV to the transverse optic (TO) branch near 9 meV. No zone center optic mode was found. We report new results from an extensive neutron scattering study of pure PZN that exhibits the same waterfall feature. We are able to model the dynamics of the waterfall using a simple coupled-mode model that assumes a strongly q-dependent optic mode linewidth Gamma1(q) that increases sharply near 0.2 A-1 as one approaches the zone center. This model was motivated by the results of Burns and Dacol in 1983, who observed the formation of a randomly-oriented local polarization in PZN at temperatures far above its ferroelectric phase transition temperature. The dramatic increase in Gamma1 is believed to occur when the wavelength of the optic mode becomes comparable to the size of the small polarized micro-regions (PMR) associated with this randomly-oriented local polarization, with the consequence that longer wavelength optic modes cannot propagate and become overdamped. Below Tc=410 K, the intensity of the waterfall diminishes. At lowest temperatures ~30 K the waterfall is absent, and we observe the recovery of a zone center transverse optic mode near 10.5 meV., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures (one color). The origin of ultrahigh piezoelectricity in the relaxor ferroelectric PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3-PbTiO3 was studied with an electric field applied along the [001] direction. The zero-field rhombohedral R phase starts to follow the direct polarization path to tetragonal symmetry via an intermediate monoclinic M phase, but then jumps irreversibly to an alternate path involving a different type of monoclinic distortion. Details of the structure and domain configuration of this novel phase are described. This result suggests that there is a nearby R-M phase boundary as found in the Pb(Ti,Zr)O3 system., Comment: REVTeX file. 4 pages. New version after referees' comments

A summary of the work recently carried out on the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) of PZT is presented. By means of x-ray powder diffraction on ceramic samples of excellent quality, the MPB has been successfully characterized by changing temperature in a series of closely spaced compositions. As a result, an unexpected monoclinic phase has been found to exist in between the well-known tetragonal and rhombohedral PZT phases. A detailed structural analysis, together with the investigation of the field effect in this region of compositions, have led to an important advance in understanding the mechanisms responsible for the physical properties of PZT as well as other piezoelectric materials with similar morphotropic phase boundaries., Comment: 5 pages REVTeX file, 6 figures embedded. Neutron inelastic scattering measurements of the polar TO phonon mode dispersion in the cubic relaxor Pb(Zn_1/3Nb_2/3)_0.92Ti_0.08O_3 at 500K reveal anomalous behavior in which the optic branch appears to drop precipitously into the acoustic branch at a finite value of the momentum transfer q=0.2 inverse Angstroms, measured from the zone center. High resolution x-ray powder diffraction measurements on poled PbZr(1-x)TixO3 (PZT) ceramic samples close to the rhombohedral-tetragonal phase boundary (the so-called morphotropic phase boundary, MPB) have shown that for both rhombohedral and tetragonal compositions, the piezoelectric elongation of the unit cell does not occur along the polar directions but along those directions associated with the monoclinic distortion. The perovskite-like ferroelectric system PbZr(1-x)Ti(x)O3 (PZT) has a nearly vertical morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) around x=0.45-0.50. Recent synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction measurements by Noheda et al. [Appl. Phys. Lett. 74, 2059 (1999)] have revealed a new monoclinic phase between the previously-established tetragonal and rhombohedral regions. In the present work we describe a Rietveld analysis of the detailed structure of the tetragonal and monoclinic PZT phases on a sample with x= 0.48 for which the lattice parameters are respectively: at= 4.044 A, ct= 4.138 A, at 325 K, and am= 5.721 A, bm= 5.708 A, cm= 4.138 A, beta= 90.496 deg., at 20K. In the tetragonal phase the shifts of the atoms along the polar [001] direction are similar to those in PbTiO3 but the refinement indicates that there are, in addition, local disordered shifts of the Pb atoms of ~0.2 A perpendicular to the polar axis.. The monoclinic structure can be viewed as a condensation along one of the <110> directions of the local displacements present in the tetragonal phase. It equally well corresponds to a freezing-out of the local displacements along one of the <100> directions recently reported by Corker et al.[J. Phys. Condens. Matter 10, 6251 (1998)] for rhombohedral PZT. The monoclinic structure therefore provides a microscopic picture of the MPB region in which one of the "locally" monoclinic phases in the "average" rhombohedral or tetragonal structures freezes out, and thus represents a bridge between these two phases., Comment: REVTeX, 7 figures. A previously unreported ferroelectric phase has been revealed on a highly homogeneous sample of Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 by high-resolution synchrotron x-ray powder diffraction measurements. At ambient temperature the sample has tetragonal symmetry (at= 4.037 A, ct= 4.138 A), and transforms below ~250 K into a phase which, unexpectedly, has monoclinic symmetry (am= 5.717 A, bm= 5.703 A, cm= 4.143 A, beta= 90.53 deg., at 20K). The intensity data strongly indicate that the polar axis lies in the monoclinic ac plane close to the pseudo-cubic [111] direction, which would be an example of the species m3m(12)A2Fm predicted on symmetry grounds by Shuvalov., Comment: 6 pages HTML file including 4 figures.
