We conducted a review of the fundamental aspects of describing and detecting the Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) feature in galaxy surveys, emphasizing the optimal tools for constraining this probe based on the type of observation. Additionally, we included new results with two spectroscopic datasets to determine the best-fit model for the power spectrum, $P(k)$. Using the framework described in a previous analysis, we applied this to a different sub-sample of the BOSS survey, specifically galaxies with redshifts $0.3

Mathematical modeling can offer valuable insights into the behavior of biological systems upon treatment. Different mathematical models (empirical, semi-empirical, and mechanistic) have been designed to predict the efficacy of either hyperthermia (HT), radiotherapy (RT), or their combination. However, mathematical approaches capable of modeling cell survival from shared general principles for both mono-treatments alone and their co-application are rare. Moreover, some cell cultures show dose-dependent saturation in response to HT or RT, manifesting in survival curve flattenings. An advanced survival model must, therefore, appropriately reflect such behavior. We propose a cell survival model to predict the effect of both treatments based on the general principle of sublethal damage (SLD) accumulation for the induction of cell death and irreversible proliferation arrest. Our approach extends Jung's model on heat-induced cellular inactivation by incorporating dose-dependent recovery rates that delineate changes in SLD restoration. The resulting unified model (Umodel) accurately describes not only HT but also RT survival outcomes, is applicable to simultaneous thermoradiotherapy modeling, and particularly suited to reproduce and predict survival curve flattening phenomena. The Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) are one of the most used probes to understand the accelerated expansion of the Universe. Traditional methods rely on fiducial model information within their statistical analysis, which may be a problem when constraining different families of models. This work aims to provide a method that constrains $\theta_{BAO}$ through a model-independent approach using the covariance matrix from the galaxy sample from thin redshift bins, later validated with a mock sample covariance matrix. We used widths of $\delta z = 0.002$ separation for all samples as the basis for a sample covariance matrix weighted by the statistical importance of the redshift bin. Each sample belongs to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey: BOSS1, BOSS2, and eBOSS, with effective redshift $z_{eff}$: 0.35, 0.51, 0.71, and different numbers of bins with 50, 100, and 200. To get $\theta_{BAO}$, we correct the angular separation from the polynomial fit ($\theta_{fit}$) by comparing each bin correlation function with the correlation function of the whole set, a parameter named $\tilde{\alpha}$. We also tested such correction by choosing the bin at $z_{eff}$ and found that for eBOSS $\theta_{BAO}$ is in $1 \sigma$ agreement with the Planck 18 model. Finally, we found that the sample covariances are noisy compared to the mocks for lower $z$ samples, something expected due to nonlinear effects. Such noise impact can be seen in the parameter constraints but does not affect the eBOSS covariance sample. It is shown that mocks' results do tend to its chosen fiducial cosmology $\theta_{BAO}$. The earliest evolution of star clusters involves a phase of co-existence of both newly-formed stars, and the gas from which they are forming. Observations of the gas in such regions provide a wealth of data that can inform the simulations which are needed to follow the evolution of such objects forward in time. We present a method for transforming the observed gas properties into initial conditions for simulations that include gas, stars, and ongoing star formation. We demonstrate our technique using the Orion Nebula Cluster. Since the observations cannot provide all the necessary information for our simulations, we make choices for the missing data and assess the impact of those choices. We find that the results are insensitive to the adopted choices of the gas velocity in the plane of the sky. The properties of the surrounding gas cloud (e.g. overall density and size), however, have an effect on the star formation rate and pace of assembly of the resultant star cluster. We also analyze the stellar properties of the cluster and find that the stars become more tightly clustered and in a stronger radial distribution even as new stars form in the filament., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

In this paper, we investigate primeness of groupoid graded rings. We provide a set of necessary and sufficient conditions for primeness of a nearly-epsilon strongly groupoid graded ring. Furthermore, we apply our main result to get a characterization of prime partial skew groupoid rings, and in particular of prime groupoid rings, thereby generalizing a classical result by Connell and partially generalizing recent results by Steinberg., Comment: 20 pages. The James Webb Space Telescope's Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (JWST-NIRISS) flies a 7-hole non-redundant mask (NRM), the first such interferometer in space, operating at 3-5 \micron~wavelengths, and a bright limit of $\simeq 4$ magnitudes in W2. We describe the NIRISS Aperture Masking Interferometry (AMI) mode to help potential observers understand its underlying principles, present some sample science cases, explain its operational observing strategies, indicate how AMI proposals can be developed with data simulations, and how AMI data can be analyzed. We also present key results from commissioning AMI. Since the allied Kernel Phase Imaging (KPI) technique benefits from AMI operational strategies, we also cover NIRISS KPI methods and analysis techniques, including a new user-friendly KPI pipeline. The NIRISS KPI bright limit is $\simeq 8$ W2 magnitudes. AMI (and KPI) achieve an inner working angle of $\sim 70$ mas that is well inside the $\sim 400$ mas NIRCam inner working angle for its circular occulter coronagraphs at comparable wavelengths., Comment: 30 pages, 10 figures

We present a detection of correlated clustering between MeerKAT radio intensity maps and galaxies from the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey. We find a $7.7\sigma$ detection of the cross-correlation power spectrum, the amplitude of which is proportional to the product of the HI density fraction ($\Omega_{\rm HI}$), HI bias ($b_{\rm HI}$) and the cross-correlation coefficient ($r$). We therefore obtain the constraint $\Omega_{\rm HI} b_{\rm HI} r\,{=}\,[0.86\,{\pm}\,0.10\,({\rm stat})\,{\pm}\,0.12\,({\rm sys})]\,{\times}\,10^{-3}$, at an effective scale of $k_{\rm eff}\,{\sim}\,0.13\,h\,{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. The intensity maps were obtained from a pilot survey with the MeerKAT telescope, a 64-dish pathfinder array to the SKA Observatory (SKAO). The data were collected from 10.5 hours of observations using MeerKAT's L-band receivers over six nights covering the 11hr field of WiggleZ, in the frequency range $1015-973\,{\rm MHz}$ (0.400$\,{<}\,z\,{<}\,$0.459 in redshift). This detection is the first practical demonstration of the multi-dish auto-correlation intensity mapping technique for cosmology. Substance use is a frequently cited health risk behavior in the youth gang literature, yet little is known about how substance use patterns vary among gang-involved youth or the social ecological factors that contribute to potential variation. Developing relevant and effective service approaches will require an understanding of this variation and the malleable factors that are likely to promote or inhibit particular patterns of use. Using latent class analysis, we identified four substance use classes within a school-based sample of gang-involved youth (n = 2,770): Non-Users (38%), Past Users (15%), Casual Users (27%), and Frequent Multi-Users (21%). These classes were distinguished by substance type, frequency of use, and source of access. Demographic and substance use-specific ecological factors across the family, peer, school, and neighborhood contexts were found to significantly differentiate these classes. Specifically, acceptance of use by parents, friends, and neighbors, along with a lack of family rules and high accessibility in the neighborhood, significantly differentiated use patterns. Findings highlight the need for service approaches that are responsive to the unique needs of individuals and their environments. Implications for practice are discussed, including the potential utility of applying a harm reduction service framework to address youth gang substance use. Perceived discrimination is common and consequential. Yet, little support is available to ease handling of these experiences. Addressing this gap, we report on a need-finding study to guide us in identifying relevant technologies and their requirements. Specifically, we examined unfolding experiences of perceived discrimination among college students and found factors to address in providing meaningful support. We used semi-structured retrospective interviews with 14 students to understand their perceptions, emotions, and coping in response to discriminatory behaviors within the prior ten-week period. These 14 students were among 90 who provided experience sampling reports of unfair treatment over the same ten-week period. We found that discrimination is more distressing if students face related academic and social struggles or when the incident triggers beliefs of inefficacy. We additionally identified patterns of effective coping. By grounding the findings in an extended stress processing framework, we offer a principled approach to intervention design, which we illustrate through incident-specific and proactive intervention paradigms.

We present spectroscopic follow-up observations of 68 red, faint candidates from our multi-epoch, multi-wavelength, previously published survey of NGC 2264. Using near-infrared spectra from VLT/KMOS, we measure spectral types and extinction for 32 young low-mass sources. We confirm 13 as brown dwarfs in NGC 2264, with spectral types between M6 and M8, corresponding to masses between 0.02 and 0.08$M_{\odot}$. These are the first spectroscopically confirmed brown dwarfs in this benchmark cluster. 19 more objects are found to be young M-type stars of NGC 2264 with masses of 0.08 to 0.3$\,M_{\odot}$. 7 of the confirmed brown dwarfs as well as 15 of the M-stars have IR excess caused by a disc. Comparing with isochrones, the typical age of the confirmed brown dwarfs is $<$0.5 to 5Myr. More than half of the newly identified brown dwarfs and very low mass stars have ages $<$0.5Myr, significantly younger than the bulk of the known cluster population. Based on the success rate of our spectroscopic follow-up, we estimate that NGC 2264 hosts 200-600 brown dwarfs in total (in the given mass range). This would correspond to a star-to-brown dwarf ratio between 2.5:1 and 7.5:1. We determine the slope of the substellar mass function as $\alpha = 0.43^{+0.41}_{-0.56}$, these values are consistent with those measured for other young clusters. Motivation: In spite of great success of genome-wide association studies (GWAS), multiple challenges still remain. First, complex traits are often associated with many single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), each with small or moderate effect sizes. Second, our understanding of the functional mechanisms through which genetic variants are associated with complex traits is still limited. To address these challenges, we propose GPA-Tree and it simultaneously implements association mapping and identifies key combinations of functional annotations related to risk-associated SNPs by combining a decision tree algorithm with a hierarchical modeling framework. Results: First, we implemented simulation studies to evaluate the proposed GPA-Tree method and compared its performance with existing statistical approaches. The results indicate that GPA-Tree outperforms existing statistical approaches in detecting risk-associated SNPs and identifying the true combinations of functional annotations with high accuracy. Second, we applied GPA-Tree to a systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) GWAS and functional annotation data including GenoSkyline and GenoSkylinePlus. The results from GPA-Tree highlight the dysregulation of blood immune cells, including but not limited to primary B, memory helper T, regulatory T, neutrophils and CD8+ memory T cells in SLE. These results demonstrate that GPA-Tree can be a powerful tool that improves association mapping while facilitating understanding of the underlying genetic architecture of complex traits and potential mechanisms linking risk-associated SNPs with complex traits., Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures

We apply for the first time Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) as a foreground removal technique in the context of single-dish, low redshift HI intensity mapping, and present an open-source Python toolkit for doing so. We use MeerKAT and SKA1-MID-like simulations of 21cm foregrounds (including polarisation leakage), HI cosmological signal and instrumental noise. We find that it is possible to use GPR as a foreground removal technique in this context, and that it is better suited in some cases to recover the HI power spectrum than Principal Component Analysis (PCA), especially on small scales. GPR is especially good at recovering the radial power spectrum, outperforming PCA when considering the full bandwidth of our data. Both methods are worse at recovering the transverse power spectrum, since they rely on frequency-only covariance information. When halving our data along frequency, we find that GPR performs better in the low frequency range, where foregrounds are brighter. It performs worse than PCA when frequency channels are missing, to emulate RFI flagging. We conclude that GPR is an excellent foreground removal option for the case of single-dish, low redshift HI intensity mapping in the absence of missing frequency channels. We use photometric and kinematic data from Gaia DR2 to explore the structure of the star forming region associated with the molecular cloud of Perseus. Apart from the two well known clusters, IC 348 and NGC 1333, we present five new clustered groups of young stars, which contain between 30 and 300 members, named Autochthe, Alcaeus, Heleus, Electryon and Mestor. We demonstrate these are co-moving groups of young stars, based on how the candidate members are distributed in position, proper motion, parallax and colour-magnitude space. By comparing their colour-magnitude diagrams to isochrones we show that they have ages between 1 and 5 Myr. Using 2MASS and WISE colours we find that the fraction of stars with discs in each group ranges from 10 to 50 percent. The youngest of the new groups is also associated with a reservoir of cold dust, according to the Planck map at 353 GHz. We compare the ages and proper motions of the five new groups to those of IC 348 and NGC 1333. Autochthe is clearly linked with NGC 1333 and may have formed in the same star formation event. The seven groups separate roughly into two sets which share proper motion, parallax and age: Heleus, Electryon, Mestor as the older set, and NGC 1333, Autochthe as the younger set. Alcaeus is kinematically related to the younger set, but at a more advanced age, while the properties of IC 348 overlap with both sets. A consequence of a growing incarceration rate is that an increasing number of children face having an incarcerated household member, a known contributor to diverse lifelong behavioral health risks such as substance use and mental health impairment. Few studies have explored how household incarceration uniquely contributes to these subsequent behavioral health concerns, nor mediational contributors to these associations, within a theoretical framework. Using state Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey data (n=14,001), this study tests pathways of household incarceration and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to mental health impairment and substance use in adulthood. Within a life course stress process perspective, this study uses structural equation modeling to examine mediational pathways through adulthood incarceration and indicators of adulthood adversity, low income, and supportive resources. In line with stress process theorizing, results indicate significant direct and indirect paths of ACEs through nearly all theorized mediators, and indirect pathways of household incarceration, through incarceration and low income, to adulthood mental health impairment and substance use. Implications of these findings address preventive and interventive leverage points to mitigate long-term consequences of household incarceration and other childhood adversities. This study applies cumulative adversity and stress proliferation theories to examine risk and protective resource profiles of youth with three different levels of housing and parental care instability. Data derive from a state representative sample (n=27,087) of school-based adolescent students. ANCOVA analyses identified significant differences in sociodemographic and psychosocial functioning variables for youth with 0, 1, or 2 forms of housing and parental care instability, with more deleterious functioning being observed among youth with greater levels of instability. Those experiencing either or both housing and parental care instability are more represented by males, sexual minorities, and youth of color; psychosocial risk and protective factors demonstrated consistent differences between instability groups. Dimensions of cumulative adversity operate with social marginalities (e.g., race, sexual minority status) relative to instability, with higher frequency of victimization, lower grades, diminished self-regulation capabilities and school engagement, weakened psychological health, and strained family and peer relationships. The paper discusses theorized mechanisms through which cumulative adversity conveys effects as well as implications for social work prevention and resilience-fostering strategies in schools and other youth-serving settings. While most purpose-built 21cm intensity mapping experiments are close-packed interferometer arrays, general-purpose dish arrays should also be capable of measuring the cosmological 21cm signal. This can be achieved most efficiently if the array is used as a collection of scanning autocorrelation dishes rather than as an interferometer. As a first step towards demonstrating the feasibility of this observing strategy, we show that we are able to successfully calibrate dual-polarisation autocorrelation data from 64 MeerKAT dishes in the L-band (856-1712 MHz, 4096 channels), with 10.5 hours of data retained from six nights of observing. We describe our calibration pipeline, which is based on multi-level RFI flagging, periodic noise diode injection to stabilise gain drifts and an absolute calibration based on a multi-component sky model. We show that it is sufficiently accurate to recover maps of diffuse celestial emission and point sources over a 10 deg x 30 deg patch of the sky overlapping with the WiggleZ 11hr field. The reconstructed maps have a good level of consistency between per-dish maps and external datasets, with the estimated thermal noise limited to 1.4 x the theoretical noise level (~ 2 mK). The residual maps have rms amplitudes below 0.1 K, corresponding to <1% of the model temperature. The reconstructed Galactic HI intensity map shows excellent agreement with the Effelsberg-Bonn HI Survey, and the flux of the radio galaxy 4C+03.18 is recovered to within 3.6%, which demonstrates that the autocorrelation can be successfully calibrated to give the zero-spacing flux and potentially help in the imaging of MeerKAT interferometric data. The brown dwarf population in the canonical star forming region NGC2264 is so far poorly explored. We present a deep, multi-wavelength, multi-epoch survey of the star forming cluster NGC2264, aimed to identify young brown dwarf candidates in this region. Using criteria including optical/near-infrared colours, variability, Spitzer mid-infrared colour excess, extinction, and Gaia parallax and proper motion (in order of relevance), we select 902 faint red sources with indicators of youth. Within this sample we identify 429 brown dwarf candidates based on their infrared colours. The brown dwarf candidates are estimated to span a mass range from 0.01 to 0.08$M_{\odot}$. We find rotation periods for 44 sources, 15 of which are brown dwarf candidates, ranging from 3.6 hours to 6.5 days. A subset of 38 brown dwarf candidates show high level irregular variability indicative of ongoing disc accretion, similar to the behaviour of young stars., Comment: 10 pages, 14 figures

We assess the performance of the multipole expansion formalism in the case of single-dish HI intensity mapping, including instrumental and foreground removal effects. This formalism is used to provide MCMC forecasts for a range of HI and cosmological parameters, including redshift space distortions and the Alcock-Paczynski effect. We first determine the range of validity of our power spectrum modelling by fitting to simulation data, concentrating on the monopole, quadrupole, and hexadecapole contributions. We then show that foreground subtraction effects can lead to severe biases in the determination of cosmological parameters, in particular the parameters relating to the transverse BAO rescaling, the growth rate and the HI bias ($\alpha_\perp$, $\overline{T}_\text{HI} f\sigma_8$, and $\overline{T}_\text{HI} b_\text{HI} \sigma_8$, respectively). We attempt to account for these biases by constructing a 2-parameter foreground modelling prescription, and find that our prescription leads to unbiased parameter estimation at the expense of increasing the estimated uncertainties on cosmological parameters. In addition, we confirm that instrumental and foreground removal effects significantly impact the theoretical covariance matrix, and cause the covariance between different multipoles to become non-negligible. We present a framework and an open-source python toolkit to analyse the 2-point statistics of 3D fluctuations in the context of HI intensity maps using the multipole expansion formalism. We include simulations of the cosmological HI signal using N-body and log-normal methods, foregrounds and their removal, as well as instrumental effects. Using these simulations and analytical modelling, we investigate the impact of foreground cleaning and the instrumental beam on the power spectrum multipoles as well as on the Fourier space clustering wedges. We find that both the instrumental beam and the foreground removal can produce a quadrupole (and a hexadecapole) signal, and demonstrate the importance of controlling and accurately modelling these effects for precision radio cosmology. We conclude that these effects can be modelled with reasonable accuracy using our multipole expansion technique. We also perform an MCMC analysis to showcase the effect of foreground cleaning on the estimation of the HI abundance and bias parameters. We determine the cosmic abundance of molecular hydrogen (H2) in the local universe from the xCOLD GASS survey. To constrain the H2 mass function at low masses and correct for the effect of the lower stellar mass limit of 10^9 Msun in the xCOLD GASS survey, we use an empirical approach based on an observed scaling relation between star formation rate and gas mass. We also constrain the HI and HI+H2 mass functions using the xGASS survey, and compare it to the HI mass function from the ALFALFA survey. We find the cosmic abundance of molecular gas in the local Universe to be Omega_H2=(5.34+/-0.47)x10^-5 h^-1. Molecular gas accounts for 19.6 +/- 3.9% of the total abundance of cold gas, Omega_HI+H2=(4.66+/-0.70)x10^-4 h^-1. Galaxies with stellar masses in excess of 10^9 Msun account for 89% of the molecular gas in the local Universe, while in comparison such galaxies only contain 73% of the cold atomic gas as traced by the HI 21cm line. The xCOLD GASS CO, molecular gas and cold gas mass functions and Omega_H2 measurements provide constraints for models of galaxy evolution and help to anchor blind ALMA and NOEMA surveys attempting to determine the abundance of molecular gas at high redshifts., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to MNRAS

Understanding disk dissipation is essential for studying how planets form. Disk gaps and holes, which almost correspond to dust-free regions, are inferred from infrared observations of T Tauri stars (TTS), indicating the existence of a transitional phase between thick accreting disks and debris disks. Transition disks are usually referred to as candidates for newly formed planets. We searched for transition disk candidates belonging to NGC 2264. We characterized accretion, disk, and stellar properties of transition disk candidates and compared them to systems with a full disk and diskless stars We modeled the spectral energy distribution (SED) of a sample of 401 TTS, with Hyperion SED fitting code using photometric data from the U band to the MIPS band. We used the SED modeling to distinguish transition disk candidates, full disk systems, and diskless stars. We classified $52\%$ of the sample as full disk systems, $41\%$ as diskless stars, and $7\%$ of the systems as transition disk candidates, among which seven systems are new transition disk candidates belonging to the NGC 2264 cluster. The sample of transition disk candidates present dust in the inner disk similar to anemic disks, according to the $\alpha_{IRAC}$ classification, which shows that anemic disk systems can be candidate transition disks. We show that the presence of a dust hole in the inner disk does not stop the accretion process since $82\%$ of transition disk candidates accrete and show $H\alpha$, UV excess, and mass accretion rates at the same level as full disk systems. We estimate the inner hole sizes, ranging from 0.1 to $78AU$, for the sample of transition disk candidates. In only $18\%$ of the transition disk candidates, the hole size could be explained by X-ray photoevaporation from stellar radiation., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We have extended and refined the existing young stellar object (YSO) catalogs for the Orion A molecular cloud, the closest massive star-forming region to Earth. This updated catalog is driven by the large spatial coverage (18.3 deg$^2$, $\sim$950 pc$^2$), seeing limited resolution ($\sim$0.7$"$), and sensitivity ($K_s<19$ mag) of the ESO-VISTA near-infrared survey of the Orion A cloud (VISION). Combined with archival mid- to far-infrared data, the VISTA data allow for a refined and more robust source selection. We estimate that among previously known protostars and pre-main-sequence stars with disks, source contamination levels (false positives) are at least $\sim$6.4% and $\sim$2.3%, respectively, mostly due to background galaxies and nebulosities. We identify 274 new YSO candidates using VISTA/Spitzer based selections within previously analyzed regions, and VISTA/WISE based selections to add sources in the surroundings, beyond previously analyzed regions. The WISE selection method recovers about 59% of the known YSOs in Orion A's low-mass star-forming part L1641, which shows what can be achieved by the all-sky WISE survey in combination with deep near-infrared data in regions without the influence of massive stars. The new catalog contains 2980 YSOs, which were classified based on the de-reddened mid-infrared spectral index into 188 protostars, 185 flat-spectrum sources, and 2607 pre-main-sequence stars with circumstellar disks. We find a statistically significant difference in the spatial distribution of the three evolutionary classes with respect to regions of high dust column-density, confirming that flat-spectrum sources are at a younger evolutionary phase compared to Class IIs, and are not a sub-sample seen at particular viewing angles., Comment: 39 pages, 25 figures, Accepted for publication by A&A

New radio (MeerKAT and Parkes) and X-ray (XMM-Newton, Swift, Chandra, and NuSTAR) observations of PSR J1622-4950 indicate that the magnetar, in a quiescent state since at least early 2015, reactivated between 2017 March 19 and April 5. The radio flux density, while variable, is approximately 100x larger than during its dormant state. The X-ray flux one month after reactivation was at least 800x larger than during quiescence, and has been decaying exponentially on a 111+/-19 day timescale. This high-flux state, together with a radio-derived rotational ephemeris, enabled for the first time the detection of X-ray pulsations for this magnetar. At 5%, the 0.3-6 keV pulsed fraction is comparable to the smallest observed for magnetars. The overall pulsar geometry inferred from polarized radio emission appears to be broadly consistent with that determined 6-8 years earlier. However, rotating vector model fits suggest that we are now seeing radio emission from a different location in the magnetosphere than previously. This indicates a novel way in which radio emission from magnetars can differ from that of ordinary pulsars. The torque on the neutron star is varying rapidly and unsteadily, as is common for magnetars following outburst, having changed by a factor of 7 within six months of reactivation., Comment: Published in ApJ (2018 April 5); 13 pages, 4 figures

The classical T Tauri star AA Tau presented photometric variability attributed to an inner disk warp, caused by the interaction between the inner disk and an inclined magnetosphere. Previous studies of NGC 2264 have shown that similar photometric behavior is common among CTTS. The goal of this work is to investigate the main causes of the observed photometric variability of CTTS in NGC 2264 that present AA Tau-like light curves, and verify if an inner disk warp could be responsible for their variability. We investigate veiling variability in their spectra and u-r color variations and estimate parameters of the inner disk warp using an occultation model proposed for AA Tau. We compare infrared and optical light curves to analyze the dust responsible for the occultations. AA Tau-like variability is transient on a timescale of a few years. We ascribe it to stable accretion regimes and aperiodic variability to unstable accretion regimes and show that a transition, and even coexistence, between the two is common. We find evidence of hot spots associated with occultations, indicating that the occulting structures could be located at the base of accretion columns. We find average values of warp maximum height of 0.23 times its radial location, consistent with AA Tau, with variations of on average 11% between rotation cycles. We show that extinction laws in the inner disk indicate the presence of grains larger than interstellar grains. The inner disk warp scenario is consistent with observations for all but one periodic star in our sample. AA Tau-like systems comprise 14% of CTTS observed in NGC 2264, though this increases to 35% among systems of mass 0.7M_sun

We aim at characterizing the accretion properties of several hundred members of the star-forming cluster NGC 2264 (3 Myr). We performed a deep u,g,r,i mapping and a simultaneous u+r monitoring of the region with CFHT/MegaCam in order to directly probe the accretion process from UV excess measurements. Photometric properties and stellar parameters are determined homogeneously for about 750 monitored young objects, spanning the mass range 0.1-2 Mo. About 40% are classical (accreting) T Tauri stars, based on various diagnostics (H_alpha, UV and IR excesses). The remaining non-accreting members define the (photospheric+chromospheric) reference UV emission level over which flux excess is detected and measured. We revise the membership status of cluster members based on UV accretion signatures and report a new population of 50 CTTS candidates. A large range of UV excess is measured for the CTTS population, varying from a few 0.1 to 3 mag. We convert these values to accretion luminosities and obtain mass accretion rates ranging from 1e-10 to 1e-7 Mo/yr. Taking into account a mass-dependent detection threshold for weakly accreting objects, we find a >6sigma correlation between mass accretion rate and stellar mass. A power-law fit, properly accounting for upper limits, yields M_acc $\propto$ M^{1.4+/-0.3}. At any given stellar mass, we find a large spread of accretion rates, extending over about 2 orders of magnitude. The monitoring of the UV excess on a timescale of a couple of weeks indicates that its variability typically amounts to 0.5 dex, much smaller than the observed spread. We suggest that a non-negligible age spread across the cluster may effectively contribute to the observed spread in accretion rates at a given mass. Context. Understanding the role of fragmentation is one of the most important current questions of star formation. To better understand the process of star and cluster formation, we need to study in detail the physical structure and properties of the parental molecular cloud. The Spokes cluster, or NGC 2264 D, is a rich protostellar cluster where previous N2H+(1-0) observations of its dense cores presented linewidths consistent with supersonic turbulence. However, the fragmentation of the most massive of these cores appears to have a scale length consistent with that of the thermal Jeans length, suggesting that turbulence was not dominant. Aims. These two results probe different density regimes. Our aim is to determine if there is subsonic or less-turbulent gas (than previously reported) in the Spokes cluster at higher densities. Methods. We present APEX N2H+(3-2) and N2D+(3-2) observations of the NGC2264-D region to measure the linewidths and the deuteration fraction of the higher density gas. The critical densities of the selected transitions are more than an order of magnitude higher than that of N2H+(1-0). Results. We find that the N2H+(3-2) and N2D+(3-2) emission present significantly narrower linewidths than the emission from N2H+(1-0) for most cores. In two of the spectra, the nonthermal component is close (within 1-sigma) to the sound speed. In addition, we find that the three spatially segregated cores, for which no protostar had been confirmed show the highest levels of deuteration. Conclusions. These results show that the higher density gas, probed with N2H+ and N2D+(3-2), reveals more quiescent gas in the Spokes cluster than previously reported. More high-angular resolution interferometric observations using high-density tracers are needed to truly assess the kinematics and substructure within NGC2264-D. This study aims to determine the impact of stellar binary companions on the lifetime and evolution of circumstellar disks in the Chamaeleon I (Cha I) star-forming region by measuring the frequency and strength of accretion and circumstellar dust signatures around the individual components of T Tauri binary stars. We used high-angular resolution adaptive optics JHKL'-band photometry and 1.5-2.5mu spectroscopy of 19 visual binary and 7 triple stars in Cha I - including one newly discovered tertiary component - with separations between ~25 and ~1000au. The data allowed us to infer stellar component masses and ages and, from the detection of near-infrared excess emission and the strength of Brackett-gamma emission, the presence of ongoing accretion and hot circumstellar dust of the individual stellar component of each binary. Of all the stellar components in close binaries with separations of 25-100au, 10(+15-5)% show signs of accretion. This is less than half of the accretor fraction found in wider binaries, which itself appears significantly reduced (~44%) compared with previous measurements of single stars in Cha I. Hot dust was found around 50(+30-15)% of the target components, a value that is indistinguishable from that of Cha I single stars. Only the closest binaries (<25au) were inferred to have a significantly reduced fraction (<~25%) of components that harbor hot dust. Accretors were exclusively found in binary systems with unequal component masses M_secondary/M_primary < 0.8, implying that the detected accelerated disk dispersal is a function of mass-ratio. This agrees with the finding that only one accreting secondary star was found, which is also the weakest accretor in the sample. The results imply that disk dispersal is more accelerated the stronger the dynamical disk truncation, i.e., the smaller the inferred radius of the disk. We present a high angular resolution map of 850 um continuum emission of the Orion Molecular Cloud-3 (OMC 3) obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA); the map is a mosaic of 85 pointings covering an approximate area of 6'.5 x 2'.0 (0.88 x 0.27 pc). We detect 12 spatially resolved continuum sources, each with an H_2 mass between 0.3-5.7 Mo and a projected source size between 1400-8200 AU. All the detected sources are on the filamentary main ridge n_H2>10^6 cm^-3), and analysis based on the Jeans theorem suggests that they are most likely gravitationally unstable. Comparison of multi-wavelength data sets indicates that of the continuum sources, 6/12 (50 %) are associated with molecular outflows, 8/12 (67 %) are associated with infrared sources, and 3/12 (25 %) are associated with ionized jets. The evolutionary status of these sources ranges from prestellar cores to protostar phase, confirming that OMC-3 is an active region with ongoing embedded star-formation. We detect quasi-periodical separations between the OMC-3 sources of ~17"/0.035 pc. This spatial distribution is part of a large hierarchical structure, that also includes fragmentation scales of GMC (~35 pc), large-scale clumps (~1.3 pc), and small-scale clumps (~0.3 pc), suggesting that hierarchical fragmentation operates within the Orion A molecular cloud. The fragmentation spacings are roughly consistent with the thermal fragmentation length in large-scale clumps, while for small-scale cores it is smaller than the local fragmentation length. These smaller spacings observed with the SMA can be explained by either a helical magnetic field, cloud rotation, or/and global filament collapse. Near-infrared (IR) imaging polarimetry in the J, H, and Ks bands has been carried out for the protostellar cluster region around NGC 2264 IRS 2 in the Monoceros OB1 molecular cloud. Various infrared reflection nebulae clusters (IRNCs) associated with NGC 2264 IRS 2 and IRAS 12 S1 core were detected as well as local infrared reflection nebulae (IRNe). The illuminating sources of the IRNe were identified with known or new near- and mid-IR sources. In addition, 314 point-like sources were detected in all three bands and their aperture polarimetry was studied. Using a color-color diagram, reddened field stars and diskless pre-main sequence stars were selected to trace the magnetic field (MF) structure of the molecular cloud. The mean polarization position angle of the point-like sources is 81 \pm 29 degree in the cluster core, and 58 \pm 24 degree in the perimeter of the cluster core, which is interpreted as the projected direction on the sky of the MF in the observed region of the cloud. The Chandrasekhar-Fermi method gives a rough estimate of the MF strength to be about 100 {\mu}G. A comparison with recent numerical simulations of the cluster formation implies that the cloud dynamics is controlled by the relatively strong MF. The local MF direction is well associated with that of CO outflow for IRAS 12 S1 and consistent with that inferred from submillimeter polarimetry. When studying the evolutionary stages of protostars that form in clusters, the role of any intracluster medium cannot be neglected. High foreground extinction can lead to situations where young stellar objects (YSOs) appear to be in earlier evolutionary stages than they actually are, particularly when using simple criteria like spectral indices. To address this issue, we have assembled detailed SED characterizations of a sample of 56 Spitzer-identified candidate YSOs in the clusters NGC 2264 and IC 348. For these, we use spectra obtained with the Infrared Spectrograph onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope and ancillary multi-wavelength photometry. The primary aim is twofold: 1) to discuss the role of spectral features, particularly those due to ices and silicates, in determining a YSO's evolutionary stage, and 2) to perform comprehensive modeling of spectral energy distributions (SEDs) enhanced by the IRS data. The SEDs consist of ancillary optical-to-submillimeter multi-wavelength data as well as an accurate description of the 9.7 micron silicate feature and of the mid-infrared continuum derived from line-free parts of the IRS spectra. We find that using this approach, we can distinguish genuine protostars in the cluster from T Tauri stars masquerading as protostars due to external foreground extinction. Our results underline the importance of photometric data in the far-infrared/submillimeter wavelength range, at sufficiently high angular resolution to more accurately classify cluster members. This essay discusses the uses and consequences of high-stakes tests, which are sometimes believed to interfere with high quality education. High-stakes tests put extreme pressure on students and can create a narrow curriculum with reduced instructional time because of test prepping. Using tests for high-stakes decisions causes problems because tests are not perfect, and making important decisions on limited or imperfect information can lead to bad decisions that can harm students and teachers. Strong academic standards are being developed and implemented in many states across the United States. One such state is Louisiana. The authentic standards-based reform in Louisiana is being implemented with an assessment design that aligns assessment with the content standards and benchmarks defined by the state. The Louisiana Educational Assessment Program is being developed to be a high-stakes test that reflects standards-based education directly. It is reasonable to accept that schools should be held accountable to a standards-based education in some way or other, and high-stakes tests of the sort Louisiana is developing may have a payoff in terms of a quality education. Several trends in education are affecting administrators on a daily basis. This paper attempts to heighten understanding of a few of the current trends in administration. The first trend that is increasingly coming to the forefront is the lack of personnel willing to pursue a career in administration. Personnel in schools are not willing to take on the job of administration due to the lack of control, high stress level, and what is perceived as inadequate compensation for the job. Another trend is the number of administrators leaving their current positions. They do not want the added responsibility that has come with school accountability. If these trends continue, there will be a severe shortage of administrators in the next few years. The question we must now ask is why. Another trend is the changing role of administrators. While no school should become stagnant, administrators are constantly confronting additional responsibilities. The roles of administrators are now as diverse as the administrators themselves. Administration and the trends affecting it are changing with the times. Hopefully, we will be able to fill the administrator positions in the future with qualified candidates. (Author/WFA)

A study examined the extent to which demographic factors predict rural values in Kentucky public school district hiring officials. Among the demographic factors considered were school district metropolitan classification, school district size, community racial composition, decision makers' position in the organizational hierarchy, and decision makers' background. Rural values were identified as community centrism, traditionalism, primary group preferences, and social conservatism. Surveys were conducted with 214 Kentucky school district superintendents and principals, of whom 77 percent were from nonmetropolitan districts, 64 percent were from small districts, and 75 percent were from racially homogeneous communities. Findings indicate that in each case, individuals who were in rural areas, had rural backgrounds, were from small, racially homogeneous school districts, and held a superintendency were more likely to possess rural values than their demographic counterparts. Moreover, individuals who fit each of the rural profiles were more likely to harbor rural values than individuals who fit only some of the categories. In fact, it seems that the combination of the variables, as much as any singular factor, contributed to the values formation. Implications are discussed for the person-organization fit model of influences on teacher hiring decisions. (Contains 56 references) (TD)

This paper examines how English language learners (ELLs) are provided for in the U.S. public school system and whether they are receiving an equitable education. It focuses on: the development of assessment and accountability in the education of ELLs; the education of ELLs in San Francisco, California, whether there was great controversy over how to educate and evaluate these students; measuring growth in English by tracking students' development in English itself rather than using standardized tests; teaching ELLs (there has been little inservice or preservice training for current or future ELL teachers, although university teacher training programs nationwide are beginning to address the issue and inservice teacher training is being developed to promote the success of all students); the role of high school counselors (who can assist ELLs through the educational system and appropriately advise and inform them); English as a Second Language standards, which are necessary in order for counselors, teachers, parents, and students to all be on the same page; and the future of English language development (with a concrete set of standards specific to ELLs in place, the next step in securing educational equity is to ensure that educators are familiar with the standards and their implementation). We present 5 to 15 micron Spitzer Infrared Spectrograph (IRS) low resolution spectral data of a candidate debris disk around an M4.5 star identified as a likely member of the ~40 Myr old cluster NGC2547. The IRS spectrum shows a silicate emission feature, indicating the presence of warm, small, (sub)micron-sized dust grains in the disk. Of the fifteen previously known candidate debris disks around M-type stars, the one we discuss in this paper is the first to have an observed mid-infrared spectrum and is also the first to have measured silicate emission. We combined the IRS data with ancillary data (optical, JHKs, and Spitzer InfraRed Array Camera and 24 micron data) to build the spectral energy distribution (SED) of the source. Monte Carlo radiation transfer modeling of the SED characterized the dust disk as being very flat (h100=2AU) and extending inward within at least 0.13AU of the central star. With only six known examples, M-dwarf debris disks are rare, even though M dwarfs constitute the majority of stars in the Galaxy. After finding a new M dwarf debris disk in a shallow mid-infrared observation of NGC 2547, we present a considerably deeper Spitzer-MIPS image of the region, with a maximum exposure time of 15 minutes per pixel. Among sources selected from a previously published membership list, we identify nine new M dwarfs with excess emission at 24 micron tracing warm material close to the snow line of these stars, at orbital radii of less than 1 AU. We argue that these are likely debris disks, suggesting that planet formation is under way in these systems. Part of a larger ongoing study of the impact of antiracism mentoring on black student achievement, this report of a developmental study used a before-after approach to evaluate the pattern, direction, and significance of change in participating white teachers' white racial identity as a function of antiracism professional development. Using the Helms and Carter (1994) White Racial Identity Attitude Survey to verify the status of prospective white mentors' racial identities prior to their service as the antiracism mentors of black middle school students, this study's effect sizes data indicate that the participant group advanced in three of five areas of white racial identity. Adopting the conventional standard for practically significant effect sizes, the analysis of the difference between pretest and posttest subscale means indicates that participants advanced on the disintegration, pseudo-independence, and autonomy subscales. The study concludes that the antiracism professional development effectively advanced the prospective antiracism mentors' white identity status. Discussion focuses on the theoretical and practical implications of the results for the larger ongoing study of antiracism mentoring as a means to close the black-white achievement gap. We present new infrared imaging of the NGC 2264 G protostellar outflow region, obtained with the InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC) on-board the Spitzer Space Telescope. A jet in the red outflow lobe (eastern lobe) is clearly detected in all four IRAC bands and, for the first time, is shown to continuously extend over the entire length of the red outflow lobe traced by CO observations. The redshifted jet also extends to a deeply embedded Class 0 source, VLA 2, confirming previous suggestions that it is the driving source of the outflow (Gomez et al. 1994). The images show that the easternmost part of the redshifted jet exhibits what appear to be multiple changes of direction. To understand the redshifted jet morphology we explore several mechanisms that could generate such apparent changes of direction. From this analysis, we conclude that the redshifted jet structure and morphology visible in the IRAC images can be largely, although not entirely, explained by a slowly precessing jet (period ~8000 yr) that lies mostly on the plane of the sky. It appears that the observed changes in the redshifted jet direction may be sufficient to account for a significant fraction of the broadening of the outflow lobe observed in the CO emission., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. We present sensitive and high angular resolution (~1") 1.3 mm continuum observations of the dusty core D-MM1 in the Spokes cluster in NGC 2264 using the Submillimeter Array. A dense micro-cluster of seven Class 0 sources was detected in a 20" x 20" region with masses between 0.4 to 1.2 solar masses and deconvolved sizes of about 600 AU. We interpret the 1.3 mm emission as arising from the envelopes of the Class 0 protostellar sources. The mean separation of the 11 known sources (SMA Class 0 and previously known infrared sources) within D-MM1 is considerably smaller than the characteristic spacing between sources in the larger Spokes cluster and is consistent with hierarchical thermal fragmentation of the dense molecular gas in this region., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present new Spitzer Space Telescope observations of the young cluster NGC2264. Observations at 24 micron with the Multiband Imaging Photometer has enabled us to identify the most highly embedded and youngest objects in NGC2264. This letter reports on one particular region of NGC2264 where bright 24 micron sources are spatially configured in curious linear structures with quasi-uniform separations. The majority of these sources (~60% are found to be protostellar in nature with Class I spectral energy distributions. Comparison of their spatial distribution with sub-millimeter data from Wolf-Chase (2003) and millimeter data from Peretto et al. (2005) shows a close correlation between the dust filaments and the linear spatial configurations of the protostars, indicating that star formation is occurring primarily within dense dusty filaments. Finally, the quasi-uniform separations of the protostars are found to be comparable in magnitude to the expected Jeans length suggesting thermal fragmentation of the dense filamentary material., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJL, 5 pages, 4 figures. We present deep NIR observations of a dense region of Lupus 3 obtained with ESO's NTT and VLT. Using the NICE method we construct a dust extinction map of the cloud, which reveals embedded globules, a dense filament, and a dense ring structure. We derive dust column densities and masses for the entire cloud and for the individual structures therein. We construct radial extinction profiles for the embedded globules and find a range of profile shapes from relatively shallow profiles for cores with low peak extinctions, to relatively steep profiles for cores with high extinction. Overall the profiles are similar to those of pressure truncated isothermal spheres of varying center-to-edge density contrast. We apply Bonnor-Ebert analysis to compare the density profiles of the embedded cores in a quantitative manner and derive physical parameters such as temperatures, central densities, and external pressures. We examine the stability of the cores and find that two cores are likely stable and two are likely unstable. One of these latter cores is known to harbor an active protostar. Finally, we discuss the relation between an emerging cluster in Lupus 3 and the ring structure identified in our extinction map. Assuming that the ring is the remnant of the core within which the cluster originally formed we estimate that a star formation efficiency of ~ 30% characterized the formation of the small cluster. Our observations of Lupus 3 suggest an intimate link between the structure of a dense core and its state of star forming activity. The dense cores are found to span the entire range of evolution from a stable, starless core of modest central concentration, to an unstable, star-forming core which is highly centrally concentrated, to a significantly disrupted core from which a cluster of young stars is emerging., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal. The PACE mission represents NASA’s next investment in ocean color, cloud, and aerosol data records to enable continued and advanced insight into oceanographic and atmospheric responses to Earth’s changing climate. The Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission represents NASA’s next investment in satellite ocean color and the study of Earth’s ocean-atmosphere system, enabling new insights into oceanographic and atmospheric responses to Earth's changing climate. PACE objectives include extending systematic cloud, aerosol, and ocean biological and biogeochemical data records, making essential ocean color measurements to further understand marine carbon cycles, food web processes, and ecosystem responses to a changing climate, and improving knowledge of how aerosols influence ocean ecosystems and, conversely, how ocean ecosystems and photochemical processes affect the atmosphere. PACE objectives also encompass management of fisheries, large freshwater bodies, and air and water quality and reducing uncertainties in climate and radiative forcing models of the Earth system. PACE observations will provide information on radiative properties of land surfaces and characterization of the vegetation and soils that dominate their reflectance. The primary PACE instrument is a spectrometer that spans the ultraviolet to shortwave infrared, with a ground sample distance of 1-km at nadir. This payload is complemented by two multi-angle polarimeters with spectral ranges that span the visible to near-infrared region. Scheduled for launch in late 2022-to-early 2023, the PACE observatory will enable significant advances in the study of Earth’s biogeochemistry, carbon cycle, clouds, hydrosols, and aerosols in the ocean-atmosphere-land system. Here, we present an overview of the PACE mission, including its developmental history, science objectives, instrument payload, observatory characteristics, and data products.

Variability of experience and outcomes among violence-exposed people pose considerable challenges toward developing effective prevention and treatment protocols. To address these needs, the authors present an approach to research and a class of methodologies referred to as person oriented. Person-oriented tools support assessment of meaningful patterns among people that distinguish one group from another, subgroups for whom different interventions are indicated. The authors review the conceptual base of person-oriented methods, outline their distinction from more familiar variable-oriented methods, present descriptions of selected methods as well as empirical applications of person-oriented methods germane to violence exposure, and conclude with discussion of implications for future research and translation between research and practice. The authors focus on violence against women as a population, drawing on stress and coping theory as a theoretical framework. Unlike other faults where the space craft’s automated Fault Protection (FP) routines can be relied upon to provide a carrier signal and telemetered data to the ground-based Spacecraft Operations Flight Support (SOFS) team to facilitate vehicle acquisition, diagnosis, and fault recovery, a complete Loss-of-Spacecraft-Signal (LOS) condition will yield no information at all to help re-acquire the vehicle and resolve the fault. For any FP response activation, the spacecraft’s downlink signal must be acquired via the Deep Space Network (DSN) on the expected (post-fault) Radio Frequency Subsystem (RFS) device configuration commanded by the FP; data that will not be attainable in the case of a complete LOS condition since there is no signal available for the ground station to lock onto. In the case of the Cassini Mission-to-Saturn spacecraft, numerous fault possibilities exist that can cause a LOS condition. Activations of the onboard RFS-related FP can reconfigure the post-fault RFS states, impeding the ground team’s ability to acquire the spacecraft’s downlink signal
