Intended for advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students, this book summarizes and puts into a coherent framework the research on reading processes conducted by cognitive psychologists since the early 1970s. The book focuses on the process of reading: how information is extracted from the printed page and comprehended. Part 1 provides background information on reading, writing, and word perception. Part 2 discusses eye movements and inner speech occurring during reading, part 3 deals with understanding text through words, sentences, and discourse structures. Part 4 discusses beginning reading and reading disabilities, while part 5 covers speedreading, proofreading, and individual differences in the context of developing a model of reading.
