Laser-driven ion beams are defined by a number of unique features, including a large spread in energy. A stack configuration of radiochromic film (RCF) can be utilized to characterize such beams through measurements of their energy spectra. A spectroscopic procedure is reported that allows the proton energy density within each active layer of a radiochromic film (RCF) stack to be retrieved. This is based upon on a deconvolution algorithm developed through Geant4 Monte Carlo simulations to correct the contributions of energy depositions within a given film layer. Through Monte Carlo calculations, the spectrum retrieved from a simulated film stack can be retrieved and compared with a known energy spectrum, providing an examination of the efficacy of this tool. Application of the developed deconvolution procedure thus offers the potential to correctly reconstruct the incident energy spectrum of a laser-driven proton and ion beam from a stack of irradiated RCF., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, submission as a proceeding to ECPD 2021

Airway mucus is a complex material with both viscoelastic and viscoplastic properties that vary with healthy and pathological lung conditions. In this study, the effects of these conditions on airway closure are examined in a model problem, where an elastoviscoplastic (EVP) single liquid layer lines the inner wall of a rigid pipe and surrounds the air core. The EVP liquid layer is modelled using the Saramito-HB model. Model parameters are obtained for the mucus in healthy, asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis (CF) conditions by fitting the rheological model to experimental data. Then, liquid plug formation is studied by varying the Laplace number and undisturbed liquid film thickness. According to previous studies, airway epithelial cells can be damaged by high peak of the wall stresses and stress gradients during liquid plug formation. Here, we show that these stresses are also related to the EVP features of the liquid layer. Yielded zones of the liquid layer are examined for different mucus conditions. Before closure, liquid layer is found to be unyielded, indicating that this phase is dominated by the elastic behaviour and solvent viscosity. This is further confirmed by showing that the elastic coefficient is important in determining whether closure occurs or not. Wall stresses are also investigated for pathological and healthy cases. Their peaks are higher in COPD and CF due to the viscoelastic extra stress contribution. Unlike the Newtonian case, COPD and CF wall stresses do not relax after closure but remain approximately as high as the Newtonian peak. Moreover, the local normal wall stress gradients are smaller in COPD and CF liquid layers since their higher stiffness causes smaller curvature at the capillary wave. The local tangential wall stress gradients are also lower in these cases due to slower accumulation of the liquid at the bulge.

Challenging space missions include those at very low altitudes, where the atmosphere is source of aerodynamic drag on the spacecraft that finally defines the missions lifetime unless way to compensate for it is provided. This environment is named Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) and is defined for $h<450~km$. In addition to the satellite's aerodynamic design, to extend the lifetime of such missions an efficient propulsion system is required. One solution is Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) that collects atmospheric particles to be used as propellant for an electric thruster. The system would minimize the requirement of limited propellant availability and can also be applied to any planetary body with atmosphere, enabling new missions at low altitude ranges for longer times. One of the objectives of the H2020 DISCOVERER project, is the development of an intake and an electrode-less plasma thruster for an ABEP system. The article describes the characteristics of intake design and the respective final deigns providing collection efficiencies up to $94\%$. On the other side, the radio frequency (RF) Helicon-based plasma thruster (IPT) developed at IRS, is hereby presented as well, while its performances are being evaluated, the thruster has been operated with single atmospheric species as propellant, and has highlighted very low input power requirement for operation at comparable mass flow rates $P\sim 60~W$., Comment: arXiv admin note: substantial text overlap with arXiv:2106.15912

Operating satellites in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) benefits the already expanding New Space industry in applications including Earth Observation and beyond. However, long-term operations at such low altitudes require propulsion systems to compensate for the large aerodynamic drag forces. When using conventional propulsion systems, the amount of storable propellant limits the maximum mission lifetime. The latter can be avoided by employing Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) system, which collects the residual atmospheric particles and uses them as propellant for an electric thruster. Thus, the requirement of on-board propellant storage can ideally be nullified. At the Institute of Space Systems (IRS) of the University of Stuttgart, an intake, and a RF Helicon-based Plasma Thruster (IPT) for ABEP system are developed within the Horizons 2020 funded DISCOVERER project. In order to assess possible future use cases, this paper proposes and analyzes several novel ABEP based mission scenarios. Beginning with technology demonstration mission in VLEO, more complex mission scenarios are derived and discussed in detail. These include, amongst others, orbit maintenance around Mars as well as refuelling and space tug missions. The results show that the ABEP system is not only able to compensate drag for orbit maintenance but also capable of performing orbital maneuvers and collect propellant for applications such as Space Tug and Refuelling. Fast neutron detection is often based on the neutron-proton elastic scattering reaction: the ionization caused by recoil protons in a hydrogenous material constitutes the basic information for the design and development of a class of neutron detectors. Although experimental techniques have continuously improved, proton-recoil track imaging remains still at the frontier of n-detection systems, due to the high photon sensitivity required. Several state-of-the-art approaches for neutron tracking by using n-p single and double scattering - referred to as Recoil Proton Track Imaging (RPTI) - can be found in the literature. So far, they have showed limits in terms of detection efficiency, complexity, cost, and implementation. In order to address some of these deficiencies, we have proposed RIPTIDE a novel recoil-proton track imaging detector in which the light output produced by a fast scintillator is used to perform a complete reconstruction in space and time of the interaction events. The proposed idea is viable thanks to the dramatic advances in low noise and single photon counting achieved in the last decade by new scientific CMOS cameras as well as pixel sensors, like Timepix or MIMOSIS. This study considers the self-consistent formation and dynamics of electron clouds interacting with a background neutral gas through elastic and inelastic (ionisation) collisions in coaxial geometries similar to gyrotron electron guns. These clouds remain axially trapped as the result of crossed magnetic field lines and electric equipotential lines creating potential wells similar to those used in Penning traps. Contrary to standard Penning traps, in this study we consider a strong externally applied radial electric field which is of the same order as that of the space-charge field. In particular, the combination of coaxial geometry, strong radial electric fields and electron collisions with the residual neutral gas (RNG) present in the chamber induce non-negligible radial particle transport and ionisation. In this paper, the dynamics of the cloud density and currents resulting from electron-neutral collisions are studied using a 2D3V particle-in-cell code. Simulation results and parametric scans are hereby presented. A system of permanent magnet quadrupoles (PMQs) is going to be realized by INFNLNS to be used as a collection system for the injection of laser driven ion beams up to 60 AMeV in an energy selector based on four resistive dipoles. This system is the first element of the ELIMED (ELI-Beamlines MEDical and Multidisciplinary applications) beam transport, dosimetry and irradiation line that will be developed by INFN-LNS (It) and installed at the ELI-Beamlines facility in Prague (Cz). ELIMED will be the first users open transport beam-line where a controlled laser-driven ion beam will be used for multidisciplinary researches. The definition of well specified characteristics, both in terms of performances and field quality, of the magnetic lenses is crucial for the system realization, for the accurate study of the beam dynamics and for the proper matching with the magnetic selection system which will be designed in the next months. Here, we report the design of the collection system and the adopted solutions in order to realize a robust system form the magnetic point of view. Moreover, the first preliminary transport simulations are also described.

To extend the lifetime of such missions, an efficient propulsion system is required. One solution is Atmosphere-Breathing Electric Propulsion (ABEP) that collects atmospheric particles to be used as propellant for an electric thruster. The system would minimize the requirement of limited propellant availability and can also be applied to any planetary body with atmosphere, enabling new missions at low altitude ranges for longer times. IRS is developing, within the H2020 DISCOVERER project, an intake and a thruster for an ABEP system. The article describes the design and simulation of the intake, optimized to feed the radio frequency (RF) Helicon-based plasma thruster developed at IRS. The article deals in particular with the design of intakes based on diffuse and specular reflecting materials, which are analysed by the PICLas DSMC-PIC tool. Orbital altitudes $h=150-250$ km and the respective species based on the NRLMSISE-00 model (O, $N_2$, $O_2$, He, Ar, H, N) are investigated for several concepts based on fully diffuse and specular scattering, including hybrid designs. The major focus has been on the intake efficiency defined as $\eta_c=\dot{N}_{out}/\dot{N}_{in}$, with $\dot{N}_{in}$ the incoming particle flux, and $\dot{N}_{out}$ the one collected by the intake. Finally, two concepts are selected and presented providing the best expected performance for the operation with the selected thruster. The first one is based on fully diffuse accommodation yielding to $\eta_c<0.46$ and the second one based un fully specular accommodation yielding to $\eta_c<0.94$. BaBiO$_3$ is a charged ordered Peierls-like perovskite well known for its superconducting properties upon K or Pb doping. We present a study on the transport and electronic properties of BaBiO$_3$ perovskite with strong Bi-deficiency. We show that it is possible to synthesize BaBiO$_3$ thin layers with Bi-vacancies above 8-10% by depositing an yttrium-stabilized zirconia capping layer. By combining transport measurements with ab initio calculations we propose an scenario where the Bi-vacancies give rise to the formation of polarons and suggest that the electrical transport is dominated by the migration of these polarons trapped at Bi$^{3+}$ sites. Our work shows that cation vacancies engineering -- hardly explored to date -- appears as a promising pathway to tune the electronic and functional properties of perovskites.

The Satellite for Orbital Aerodynamics Research (SOAR) is a CubeSat mission, due to be launched in 2021, to investigate the interaction between different materials and the atmospheric flow regime in very low Earth orbits (VLEO). Improving knowledge of the gas-surface interactions at these altitudes and identification of novel materials that can minimise drag or improve aerodynamic control are important for the design of future spacecraft that can operate in lower altitude orbits. Such satellites may be smaller and cheaper to develop or can provide improved Earth observation data or communications link-budgets and latency. Using precise orbit and attitude determination information and the measured atmospheric flow characteristics the forces and torques experienced by the satellite in orbit can be studied and estimates of the aerodynamic coefficients calculated. This paper presents the scientific concept and design of the SOAR mission. The methodology for recovery of the aerodynamic coefficients from the measured orbit, attitude, and in-situ atmospheric data using a least-squares orbit determination and free-parameter fitting process is described and the experimental uncertainty of the resolved aerodynamic coefficients is estimated. The presented results indicate that the combination of the satellite design and experimental methodology are capable of clearly illustrating the variation of drag and lift coefficient for differing surface incidence angle. The lowest uncertainties for the drag coefficient measurement are found at approximately 300 km, whilst the measurement of lift coefficient improves for reducing orbital altitude to 200 km., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. Very low Earth orbits (VLEO), typically classified as orbits below approximately 450 km in altitude, have the potential to provide significant benefits to spacecraft over those that operate in higher altitude orbits. This paper provides a comprehensive review and analysis of these benefits to spacecraft operations in VLEO, with parametric investigation of those which apply specifically to Earth observation missions. The most significant benefit for optical imaging systems is that a reduction in orbital altitude improves spatial resolution for a similar payload specification. Alternatively mass and volume savings can be made whilst maintaining a given performance. Similarly, for radar and lidar systems, the signal-to-noise ratio can be improved. Additional benefits include improved geospatial position accuracy, improvements in communications link-budgets, and greater launch vehicle insertion capability. The collision risk with orbital debris and radiation environment can be shown to be improved in lower altitude orbits, whilst compliance with IADC guidelines for spacecraft post-mission lifetime and deorbit is also assisted. Finally, VLEO offers opportunities to exploit novel atmosphere-breathing electric propulsion systems and aerodynamic attitude and orbit control methods. However, key challenges associated with our understanding of the lower thermosphere, aerodynamic drag, the requirement to provide a meaningful orbital lifetime whilst minimising spacecraft mass and complexity, and atomic oxygen erosion still require further research. Given the scope for significant commercial, societal, and environmental impact which can be realised with higher performing Earth observation platforms, renewed research efforts to address the challenges associated with VLEO operations are required., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures. The Time-of-Flight (ToF) technique coupled with semiconductor-like detectors, as silicon carbide and diamond, is one of the most promising diagnostic methods for high-energy, high repetition rate, laser-accelerated ions allowing a full on-line beam spectral characterization. A new analysis method for reconstructing the energy spectrum of high-energy laser-driven ion beams from TOF signals is hereby presented and discussed. The proposed method takes into account the detector's working principle, through the accurate calculation of the energy loss in the detector active layer, using Monte Carlo simulations. The analysis method was validated against well-established diagnostics, such as the Thomson Parabola Spectrometer, during an experimental campaign carried out at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL, UK) with the high-energy laser-driven protons accelerated by the VULCAN Petawatt laser.

This manuscript provides a response to a recent report by Mazzone et al. available online on arXiv that, in turn, tentatively aims at demonstrating the inefficacy of proton boron capture in hadrotherapy. We clarify that Mazzone et al. do not add any scientific or technical insights to the points extensively discussed in the original manuscript by Cirrone et al., and/or in the series of iterations had with the Referee, which ultimately lead to the publication of our original and pioneering experimental work. Here we summarize some of the key points of the long scientific debate we had during the review process of paper by Cirrone et al., which are very similar to the considerations presented by Mazzone et al.. In conclusion, no quantitative explanation of our robust experimental achievements presented in Cirrone et al. is provided in Mazzone et al., Comment: Response to the paper arXiv:1802.09482v2

The ELIMED (MEDical and multidisciplinary application at ELI Beamlines) beam line is being developed at INFN-LNS with the aim of transporting and selecting in energy proton and ion beams accelerated by laser-matter interaction at ELI Beamlines in Prague. It will be a section of the ELIMAIA (ELI Multidisciplinary Applications of laser-Ions Acceleration) beam line, dedicated to applications, including the medical one, of laser-accelerated ion beams [1,2]. A Monte Carlo model has been developed to support the design of the beam line in terms of particle transport efficiency, to optimize the transport parameters at the irradiation point in air and, furthermore, to predict beam parameters in order to deliver dose distributions of clinical relevance. The application has been developed using the Geant4 [3] Monte Carlo toolkit and has been designed in a modular way in order to easily switch on/off geometrical components according to different experimental setups and users requirements, as reported in [4], describing the early-stage code and simulations. The application has been delivered to ELI Beamlines and will be available for future ELIMAIA's users as ready-to-use tool useful during experiment preparation and analysis. PANDORA, Plasmas for Astrophysics, Nuclear Decays Observation and Radiation for Archaeometry, is planned as a new facility based on a state-of-the-art plasma trap confining energetic plasma for performing interdisciplinary research in the fields of Nuclear Astrophysics, Astrophysics, Plasma Physics and Applications in Material Science and Archaeometry: the plasmas become the environment for measuring nuclear decays rates in stellar-like condition (such as 7Be decay and beta-decay involved in s-process nucleosynthesis), especially as a function of the ionization state of the plasma ions. These studies are of paramount importance for addressing several astrophysical issues in both stellar and primordial nucleosynthesis environment (e.g. determination of solar neutrino flux and 7Li Cosmological Problem), moreover the confined energetic plasma will be a unique light source for high performance stellar spectroscopy measurements in the visible, UV and X-ray domains, offering advancements in observational astronomy. As to magnetic fields, the experimental validation of theoretical first and second order Land\'e factors will drive the layout of next generation polarimetric units for the high resolution spectrograph of the future giant telescopes. In PANDORA new plasma heating methods will be explored, that will push forward the ion beam output, in terms of extracted intensity and charge states. More, advanced and optimized injection methods of ions in an ECR plasma will be experimented, with the aim at optimizing its capture efficiency. This will be applied to the ECR-based Charge Breeding technique, that will improve the performances of the SPES ISOL-facility currently installed at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro-INFN. Finally, PANDORA will be suitable for energy conversion, making the plasma as a source of electromagnetic radiation, for applications in Material Science and Archaeometry.

Protontherapy is hadrontherapy fastest-growing modality and a pillar in the battle against cancer. Hadrontherapy superiority lies in its inverted depth-dose profile, hence tumour-confined irradiation. Protons, however, lack distinct radiobiological advantages over photons or electrons. Higher LET (Linear Energy Transfer) $^{12}$C ions can overcome cancer radioresistance: DNA lesion complexity increases with LET, resulting in efficient cell killing, i.e. higher Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE). However, economic and radiobiological issues hamper $^{12}$C-ion clinical amenability. Thus, enhancing proton RBE is desirable. To this end, we exploited the p + $^{11}$B $\rightarrow$3$\alpha$ reaction to generate high-LET alpha particles with a clinical proton beam. To maximize the reaction rate, we used sodium borocaptate (BSH) with natural boron content. Boron-Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) uses $^{10}$B-enriched BSH for neutron irradiation-triggered alpha-particles. We recorded significantly increased cellular lethality and chromosome aberration complexity. Hadrontherapy is an emerging technique in cancer therapy that uses beams of charged particles. To meet the improved capability of hadrontherapy in matching the dose release with the cancer position, new dose monitoring techniques need to be developed and introduced into clinical use. The measurement of the fluxes of the secondary particles produced by the hadron beam is of fundamental importance in the design of any dose monitoring device and is eagerly needed to tune Monte Carlo simulations. We report the measurements done with charged secondary particles produced from the interaction of a 80 MeV/u fully stripped carbon ion beam at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, Catania, with a Poly-methyl methacrylate target. Charged secondary particles, produced at 90$\degree$ with respect to the beam axis, have been tracked with a drift chamber, while their energy and time of flight has been measured by means of a LYSO scintillator. Secondary protons have been identified exploiting the energy and time of flight information, and their emission region has been reconstructed backtracking from the drift chamber to the target. Moreover a position scan of the target indicates that the reconstructed emission region follows the movement of the expected Bragg peak position. Exploting the reconstruction of the emission region, an accuracy on the Bragg peak determination in the submillimeter range has been obtained. The measured differential production rate for protons produced with $E^{\rm Prod}_{\rm kin} >$ 83 MeV and emitted at 90$\degree$ with respect to the beam line is: $dN_{\rm P}/(dN_{\rm C}d\Omega)(E^{\rm Prod}_{\rm kin} > 83 {\rm ~MeV}, \theta=90\degree)= (2.69\pm 0.08_{\rm stat} \pm 0.12_{\rm sys})\times 10^{-4} sr^{-1}$., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Proton and carbon ion therapy is an emerging technique used for the treatment of solid cancers. The monitoring of the dose delivered during such treatments and the on-line knowledge of the Bragg peak position is still a matter of research. A possible technique exploits the collinear $511\ \kilo\electronvolt$ photons produced by positrons annihilation from $\beta^+$ emitters created by the beam. This paper reports rate measurements of the $511\ \kilo\electronvolt$ photons emitted after the interactions of a $80\ \mega\electronvolt / u$ fully stripped carbon ion beam at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) of INFN, with a Poly-methyl methacrylate target. The time evolution of the $\beta^+$ rate was parametrized and the dominance of $^{11}C$ emitters over the other species ($^{13}N$, $^{15}O$, $^{14}O$) was observed, measuring the fraction of carbon ions activating $\beta^+$ emitters $A_0=(10.3\pm0.7)\cdot10^{-3}$. The average depth in the PMMA of the positron annihilation from $\beta^+$ emitters was also measured, $D_{\beta^+}=5.3\pm1.1\ \milli\meter$, to be compared to the expected Bragg peak depth $D_{Bragg}=11.0\pm 0.5\ \milli\meter$ obtained from simulations.

Results from the gas gain monitoring (GGM) system for the muon detector using RPC in the CMS experiment at the LHC is presented. The status of the CMS RPC Gas Gain Monitoring (GGM) system developed at the Frascati Laboratory of INFN (Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare) is reported on. The GGM system is a cosmic ray telescope based on small RPC detectors operated with the same gas mixture used by the CMS RPC system. The GGM gain and efficiency are continuously monitored on-line, thus providing a fast and accurate determination of any shift in working point conditions. We evaluate the location of the gas-liquid coexistence line and of the associated critical point for the primitive model for water (PMW), introduced by Kolafa and Nezbeda [J. Kolafa and I. Nezbeda, Mol. Phys. 61, 161 (1987)]. Besides being a simple model for a molecular network forming liquid, the PMW is representative of patchy proteins and novel colloidal particles interacting with localized directional short-range attractions. We show that the gas-liquid phase separation is metastable, i.e. it takes place in the region of the phase diagram where the crystal phase is thermodynamically favored, as in the case of articles interacting via short-range attractive spherical potentials. Differently from spherical potentials, we do not observe crystallization close to the critical point. The region of gas-liquid instability of this patchy model is significantly reduced as compared to equivalent models of spherically interacting particles, confirming the possibility of observing kinetic arrest in an homogeneous sample driven by bonding as opposed to packing., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures May 8th, 2007: Corrected typos, corrected density critical exponent, fixed fugacity scale in Fig. 6

The Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) detector of the CMS experiment at the LHC proton collider (CERN, Switzerland) will employ an online gas analysis and monitoring system of the freon-based gas mixture used. We give an overview of the CMS RPC gas system, describe the project parameters and first results on gas-chromatograph analysis.
