In this paper we study the linear stability of selfinteracting boson stars in the nonrelativistic limit of the Einstein-Klein-Gordon theory. For this purpose, based on a combination of analytic and numerical methods, we determine the behavior of general linear perturbations around the stationary and spherically symmetric solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii-Poisson system. In particular, we conclude that ground state configurations are linearly stable if the selfinteraction is repulsive, whereas there exist a state of maximum mass that divides the stable and the unstable branches in case the selfinteraction is attractive. Regarding the excited states, they are in general unstable under generic perturbations, although we identify a stability band in the first excited states of the repulsive theory. This result is independent of the mass of the scalar field and the details of the selfinteraction potential, and it is in contrast to the situation of vanishing selfinteraction, in which excited states are always unstable., Comment: 15+1 pages and 10 figures. In previous work we analyzed the linear stability of non-relativistic $\ell$-boson stars with respect to radial modes and showed that ground state configurations are stable with respect to these modes, whereas excited states are unstable. In this work we extend the analysis to non-spherical linear mode perturbations. To this purpose, we expand the wave function in terms of tensor spherical harmonics which allows us to decouple the perturbation equations into a family of radial problems. By using a combination of analytic and numerical methods, we show that ground state configurations with $\ell > 1$ possess exponentially in time growing non-radial modes, whereas only oscillating modes are found for $\ell=0$ and $\ell=1$. The gravitational deflection of light is a critical test of modified theories of gravity. A few years ago, Gibbons and Werner introduced a definition of the deflection angle based on the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. In more recent years, Arakida proposed a related idea for defining the deflection angle in non-asymptotically flat spacetimes. We revisit this idea and use it to compute the angular difference in the Kottler geometry and a non-asymptotically flat solution in Horndeski gravity. Our analytic and numerical calculations show that a triangular array of laser beams can be designed so that the proposed definition of the deflection angle is sensitive to different sources of curvature. Moreover, we find that near the photon sphere, the deflection angle in the Horndeski solution is similar to its Schwarzschild counterpart, and we confirm that the shadows seen by a static observer are identical., Comment: 32+1 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

We study the linear stability of nonrelativistic $\ell$-boson stars, describing static, spherically symmetric configurations of the Schr\"odinger-Poisson system with multiple wave functions having the same value of the angular momentum $\ell$. In this work we restrict our analysis to time-dependent perturbations of the radial profiles of the $2\ell+1$ wave functions, keeping their angular dependency fixed. Based on a combination of analytic and numerical methods, we find that for each $\ell$, the ground state is linearly stable, whereas the $n$'th excited states possess $2n$ unstable (exponentially in time growing) modes. We establish the existence of static and spherically symmetric fermion-boson stars, in a low energy effective model of (beyond) Horndeski theories. These stars are in equilibrium, and are composed by a mixing of scalar and fermionic matters that only interact gravitationally one with each other. Properties such as mass, radius, and compactness are studied, highlighting the existence of two families of configurations defined by the parameter $c_4$. These families have distinctive properties, although in certain limits both are reduced to their counterparts in General Relativity. Finally, by assuming the same conditions used in General Relativity, we find the maximum compactness of these hybrid stars and determine that it remains below the so-called Buchdahl's limit., Comment: 25 pages, 8 figures, 1 tables. We establish the existence of time-dependent solitons in a modified gravity framework, which is defined by the low energy limit of theories with a weakly broken galileon symmetry and a mass term. These are regular vacuum configurations of finite energy characterized by a single continuous parameter representing the amplitude of the scalar degree of freedom at the origin. When the central field amplitude is small the objects are indistinguishable from boson stars. In contrast, increasing the central value of the amplitude triggers the effect of higher derivative operators in the effective theory, leading to departures from the previous solutions, until the theory becomes strongly coupled and model-dependent. The higher order operators are part of the (beyond) Horndeski theory, hence the name of the compact objects. Moreover, a remnant of the galileon non-renormalization theorem guarantees that the existence and properties of these solutions are not affected by quantum corrections. Finally, we discuss the linear stability under small radial perturbations, the mass-radius relation, the compactness, the appearance of innermost stable circular orbits and photon spheres, and some astrophysical signatures (accretion disks, gravitational radiation and lensing) that may be relevant to falsify the model., Comment: 49+1 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables. The deflection of light in the strong field limit is an important test for alternative theories of gravity. However, solutions for the metric that allow for analytic computations are not always available. We implement a hybrid analytic-numerical approximation to determine the deflection angle in static, spherically symmetrics pacetimes. We apply this to a set of numerical black hole solutions within the class of theories known as Degenerate Higher Order Scalar-tensor Theories. Comparing our results to a more time consuming full numerical integration, we find that we can accurately describe the deflection angle for light rays passing at arbitrary distances from the photon sphere with a combination of two analytic-numerical approximations. Furthermore, we find a range of parameters where our DHOST black holes predict strong lensing effects whose size is comparable with the uncertainty in the properties of the supermassive black hole in M87 reported by the Event Horizon Telescope, showing that strong lensing is a viable alternative to put constraints on these models., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

Cold Dark Stars made of self-gravitating fermions in the degenerate limit are constructed in General Relativity and in R-square gravity, $f(R)=R+\alpha R^2$. The properties of the resulting Cold Dark Stars in both theories of gravity are studied. It is found that the same gravitational potential is generated for different election of the parameters of the model, such as the mass of the fermion, the self-interacting strength or the value of $\alpha$, thus, a possible confusion in the determination of the dark matter properties and the favored theory of gravity might arise., Comment: Accepted for publication in Physical Review D

In this paper we investigate, from the dynamical systems perspective, the evolution of a Kantowski-Sachs metric in a generic class of $f(R)$ models. We present conditions (i. e., differentiability conditions, existence of minima, monotony intervals, etc.) for a free input function related to the $f(R)$, that guarantee the asymptotic stability of well-motivated physical solutions, specially, self-accelerated solutions, allowing to describe both inflationary- and late-time acceleration stages of the cosmic evolution. We discuss which $f(R)$ theories allows for a cosmic evolution with an acceptable matter era, in correspondence to the modern cosmological paradigm. We find a very rich behavior, and amongst others the universe can result in isotropized solutions with observables in agreement with observations, such as de Sitter, quintessence-like, or phantom solutions.
