We present new radio observations of the galaxy cluster merger CIZA J0107.7+5408 (CIZA0107), a large, roughly equal mass, post-core passage, dissociative binary system at z = 0.1066. CIZA0107 is an elongated, disturbed system, hosting two subclusters with optical galaxy number density peaks offset from their associated X-ray density peaks and double-peaked diffuse radio structure. We present new 240-470 MHz and 2.0-4.0 GHz Very Large Array observations of CIZA0107. We image the diffuse emission at high resolution, constrain its integrated spectrum, and map the spectral index distribution. We confirm the presence of steep-spectrum ($\alpha$ $\sim$ -1.3) emission on a scale of about 0.5 Mpc in both subclusters. We identify two smaller ultra-steep spectrum ($\alpha$ $<$ -2) regions, superimposed on larger-scale radio emission associated with the southwestern subcluster. At 340 MHz, we detect a radio edge bounding the emission to the south and show that it is coincident with a weak (M $\sim$ 1.2) shock identified in the Chandra image. At 3 GHz, the emission does not show any corresponding edge-like feature, and in fact it extends beyond the shock. We investigate the nature of the emission in CIZA0107 and find that, while the system may host a double halo structure, we cannot rule out a scenario in which the emission arises from two relics projected on the central cluster regions., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures, 4 tables, ApJ submitted, comments welcome!

Radio galaxies can extend far beyond the stellar component of their originating host galaxies, and their radio emission can consist of multiple discrete components. Furthermore, the apparent source structure will depend on survey sensitivity, resolution and the observing frequency. Associated discrete radio components and their originating host galaxy are typically identified through a visual comparison of radio and mid-infrared survey images. We present the first data release of Radio Galaxy Zoo, an online citizen science project that enlists the help of citizen scientists to cross-match extended radio sources from the Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty Centimeters (FIRST) and the Australia Telescope Large Area Survey (ATLAS) surveys, often with complex structure, to host galaxies in 3.6 um infrared images from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the Spitzer Space Telescope. This first data release consists of 100,185 classifications for 99,146 radio sources from the FIRST survey and 583 radio sources from the ATLAS survey. We include two tables for each of the FIRST and ATLAS surveys: 1)the identification of all components making up each radio source; and 2) the cross-matched host galaxies. These classifications have an average reliability of 0.83 based on the weighted consensus levels of our citizen scientists. The reliability of the DR1 catalogue has been further demonstrated through several parallel studies which used the pre-release versions of this catalogue to train and prototype machine learning-based classifiers. We study eigenfunction localization for higher dimensional cat maps, a popular model of quantum chaos. These maps are given by linear symplectic maps in ${\mathrm Sp}(2g,\mathbb Z)$, which we take to be ergodic. Under some natural assumptions, we show that there is a density one sequence of integers $N$ so that as $N$ tends to infinity along this sequence, all eigenfunctions of the quantized map at the inverse Planck constant $N$ are uniformly distributed. For the two-dimensional case ($g=1$), this was proved by P. Kurlberg and Z. Rudnick (2001). The higher dimensional case offers several new features and requires a completely different set of tools, including from additive combinatorics, in particular Bourgain's bound (2005) for Mordell sums, and a study of tensor product structures for the cat map.

Modern telescopes generate catalogs of millions of objects with the potential for new scientific discoveries, but this is beyond what can be examined visually. Here we introduce Astronomaly: Protege, an extension of the general purpose machine learning-based active anomaly detection framework Astronomaly. Protege is designed to provide well-selected recommendations for visual inspection, based on a small amount of optimized human labeling. The resulting sample contains rare or unusual sources which are simultaneously as diverse as the human trainer chooses, and of scientific interest to them. We train Protege on images from the MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey, leveraging the self-supervised deep learning algorithm Bootstrap Your Own Latent to find a low-dimensional representation of the radio galaxy cutouts. By operating in this feature space, Protege is able to recommend interesting sources with completely different morphologies in image space to those it has been trained on. This provides important advantages over similarity searches, which can only find more examples of known sources, or blind anomaly detection, which selects unusual, but not necessarily scientifically interesting sources. Using an evaluation subset, we show that, with minimal training, Protege provides excellent recommendations and find that it is even able to recommend sources that the authors missed. We briefly highlight some of Protege's top recommendations, which include X- and circular-shaped sources, filamentary structures and one-sided structures. These results illustrate the power of an optimized human-machine collaboration such as Protege to make unexpected discoveries in samples beyond human-accessible scales., Comment: 36 pages, 25 figures. Recent theoretical work and targeted observational studies suggest that filaments are sites of galaxy preprocessing. The aim of the WISESize project is to directly probe galaxies over the full range of environments to quantify and characterize extrinsic galaxy quenching in the local Universe. In this paper, we use GALFIT to measure the infrared 12$\mu$m ($R_{12}$) and 3.4$\mu$m ($R_{3.4}$) effective radii of 603 late-type galaxies in and surrounding the Virgo cluster. We find that Virgo cluster galaxies show smaller star-forming disks relative to their field counterparts at the $2.5\sigma$ level, while filament galaxies show smaller star-forming disks to almost $1.5\sigma$. Our data, therefore, show that cluster galaxies experience significant effects on their star-forming disks prior to their final quenching period. There is also tentative support for the hypothesis that galaxies are preprocessed in filamentary regions surrounding clusters. On the other hand, galaxies belonging to rich groups and poor groups do not differ significantly from those in the field. We additionally find hints of a positive correlation between stellar mass and size ratio for both rich group and filament galaxies, though the uncertainties on these data are consistent with no correlation. We compare our size measurements with the predictions from two variants of a state-of-the-art semi-analytic model (SAM), one which includes starvation and the other incorporating both starvation and ram-pressure stripping (RPS). Our data appear to disfavor the SAM, which includes RPS for the rich group, filament, and cluster samples, which contributes to improved constraints for general models of galaxy quenching., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures. We introduce the construction of polarized intensity cubes $P$(RA, Dec, $\Phi$) and their visualization as movies, as a powerful technique for interpreting Faraday structure. $P$ is constructed from maps of peak polarized intensity P(RA, Dec) with their corresponding Faraday depth maps $\Phi$(RA, Dec). We illustrate the extensive scientific potential of such visualizations with a variety of science use cases from ASKAP and MeerKAT, presenting models that are consistent with the data but not necessarily unique. We demonstrate how one can, in principle, distinguish between cube structures which originate from unrelated foreground screens from those due to magnetized plasmas local to the emitting source. Other science use cases illustrate how variations in the local $n_e$ $B$, and line-of-sight distance to the synchrotron emitting regions can be distinguished using Faraday rotation. We show, for the first time, how the line-of-sight orientation of AGN jets can be determined. We also examine the case of M87 to show how internal jet magnetic field configurations can be identified, and extend earlier results. We recommend using this technique to re-evaluate all previous analyses of polarized sources that are well-resolved both spatially and in Faraday depth. High-velocity outflows are ubiquitous in compact, massive (M$_* \sim$ 10$^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$), z $\sim$ 0.5 galaxies with extreme star formation surface densities ($\Sigma_{SFR} \sim$ 2000 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-2}$). We have previously detected and characterized these outflows using MgII absorption lines. To probe their full extent, we present Keck/KCWI integral field spectroscopy of the [OII] and MgII emission nebulae surrounding all of the 12 galaxies in this study. We find that [OII] is more effective than MgII in tracing low surface brightness, extended emission in these galaxies. The [OII] nebulae are spatially extended beyond the stars, with radial extent R$_{90}$ between 10 and 40 kpc. The nebulae exhibit non-gravitational motions, indicating galactic outflows with maximum blueshifted velocities ranging from -335 to -1920 km s$^{-1}$. The outflow kinematics correlate with the bursty star formation histories of these galaxies. Galaxies with the most recent bursts of star formation (within the last $<$ 3 Myr) exhibit the highest central velocity dispersions ($\sigma >$ 400 km s$^{-1}$), while the oldest bursts have the lowest-velocity outflows. Many galaxies exhibit both high-velocity cores and more extended, slower-moving gas indicative of multiple outflow episodes. Context. Tailed radio galaxies are shaped by ram pressure owing to the high-velocity motion of their host through the intracluster medium (ICM). Recent works have reported on the increasing complexity of the phenomenology of tailed galaxies, with departures from theoretical ageing models and evidence of re-energising mechanisms, which are yet unclear. Aims. The nearby (z = 0.0894) galaxy cluster Abell 2142 hosts two tailed galaxies, namely T1 and T2, which exhibit peculiar morphological features. We aim to investigate the properties of T1 and T2 and constrain their spectral evolution, dynamics, and interactions with the ICM. Methods. We combined LOw Frequency Array (LOFAR), upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT), Very Large Array (VLA), and MeerKAT data (from 30 MHz to 6.5 GHz) to carry out a detailed spectral analysis of T1 and T2. We analysed surface brightness profiles, measured integrated and spatially-resolved spectral indices, and performed a comparison with single injection ageing models. Chandra X-ray data were used to search for discontinuities in the ICM properties in the direction of the targets. Results. The spectral properties of T1 at low frequencies are predicted by ageing models, and provide constraints on the 3D dynamics of the host by assuming a constant velocity. However, sharp transitions along sub-regions of the tail, local surface brightness enhancements, and a spectral shape at high frequencies that is not predicted by models suggest a more complex scenario, possibly involving hydrodynamical instabilities and particle mixing. T2 exhibits unusual morphological and surface brightness features, and its spectral behaviour is not predicted by standard models. Galaxy evolution depends on the environment in which galaxies are located. The various physical processes (ram-pressure stripping, tidal interactions, etc.) that can affect the gas content in galaxies have different efficiencies in different environments. In this work, we examine the gas (atomic \ce{HI} and molecular \ce{H2}) content of local galaxies inside and outside clusters, groups, and filaments as well as in isolation using observational and simulated data. We exploited a catalog of galaxies in the Virgo cluster(including the surrounding filaments) and compared the data against the predictions of the Galaxy Evolution and Assembly(GAEA) semi-analytic model, which has explicit prescriptions for partitioning the cold gas content in its atomic and molecular phases. We extracted from the model a mock catalog that mimics the observational biases and one not tailored to observations to study the impact of observational limits on the results and predict trends in regimes not covered by the current observations. The observations and simulated data show that galaxies within filaments exhibit intermediate cold gas content between galaxies in clusters and isolation. The amount of \ce{HI} is typically more sensitive to the environment than \ce{H2} and low-mass galaxies ($\log_{10} [{\rm M}_{\star} / \rm{M}_{\sun} ] < 10$) are typically more affected than their massive ($\log_{10} [{\rm M}_{\star} / \rm{M}_{\sun} ] > 10$) counterparts. Considering only model data, we identified two distinct populations among filament galaxies present in similar proportions: those simultaneously lying in groups and isolated galaxies. The former has properties more similar to cluster and group galaxies, and the latter is more similar to those of field galaxies. We therefore did not detect filaments' strong effects on galaxies' gas content, and we ascribe the results to the presence of groups in filaments., Comment: 21 pages, A&A accepted

Dissolved oxygen (DO) is a non-conservative tracer of interactions at the air-sea interface, respiration and photosynthesis, and advection. In this manuscript, we study extremes in the degree of oxygen saturation (SO), the ratio of DO to the maximum concentration given the water's temperature, salinity, and depth with SO=1 critically saturated. We perform the analysis with the California Underwater Glider Network (CUGN), which operates gliders on four lines that extend from the California coast to several hundred kilometers offshore, profiling to 500m depth every 3km. Since ~2017, the gliders have been equipped with a Sea-Bird 63 optode sensor to measure the DO content. We find that parcels with SO>1.1, hyperoxic extrema, occur primarily near-shore in the upper 50m of the water column and during non-winter months. Along Line 90 which originates in San Diego, these hyperoxic events occur primarily in stratified waters with shallow mixed layers. We hypothesize that photosynthesis elevates DO in sub-surface water that can not rapidly ventilate with the surface. Along the three other lines, hyperoxic extrema occur almost exclusively at the surface and are correlated with elevated Chl-a fluorescence suggesting they are primarily driven by blooms of photosynthesis. We also examine hypoxic extrema, finding that parcels with SO<0.9 and z<50m occur most frequently along the northernmost line where upwelling has greatest impact., Comment: 10 pages, 16 figures; submitted to Journal of Physical Oceanography

Magnetic fields remain an enigmatic part of the content of galaxy clusters. Faraday rotation and depolarisation of extragalactic radio sources are useful probes, but the limited availability of polarised radio sources necessitates stacking clusters to study average magnetic field profiles and correlation scales. We recently presented a VLA survey of the 124 most massive Planck clusters at low redshift ($z<0.35$), where a clear depolarisation trend with the cluster impact parameter was found. In this study, we combine the depolarisation information with the observed rotation measure (RM) and present an investigation into the average magnetic field properties of the sample, using both background sources and sources embedded in clusters. We observe a significant increase in the RM scatter, $\sigma_\mathrm{RRM}$, closer to the cluster centres. Averaging all 124 clusters, we find a scatter within $R_\mathrm{500}$ of $\sigma_\mathrm{RRM}=209\pm37$ rad m$^{-2}$, with background sources and cluster members showing similar values ($200\pm33$ and $219\pm66$ rad m$^{-2}$, respectively). In the simple assumption of a uniform magnetic field with a single fluctuation scale $\Lambda_c$, this translates to an average magnetic field strength of $2\,(\Lambda_c/10\mathrm{kpc})^{-0.5}\, \mu$G. The profile of $\sigma_\mathrm{RRM}$ as a function of projected radius is inconsistent with a model that has a simple scaling $B \propto n_e^\eta$, with an observed deficit near the centre of clusters possibly caused by the fact that the highest RM sources near the centre of clusters are depolarised. In a full forward model, we find that the magnetic field power spectrum agrees with the Kolmogorov value, but that none of the Gaussian random field models can fully explain the observed relatively flat profiles. We present initial results from the Polarisation Sky Survey of the Universe's Magnetism (POSSUM), analysing 22,817 Faraday Rotation Measures (RMs) with median uncertainties of 1.2 rad m^-2 across 1,520 square degrees to study magnetised gas associated with 55 nearby galaxy groups (z less than 0.025) with halo masses between 10^12.5 and 10^14.0 M_sun. We identify two distinct gas phases: the Intragroup Medium (IGrM) within 0-2 splashback radii and the Warm-Hot Intergalactic Medium (WHIM) extending from 2 to 7 splashback radii. These phases enhance the standard deviation of residual (i.e., Galactic foreground RM-subtracted) RMs by 6.9 +/- 1.8 rad m^-2 and 4.2 +/- 1.2 rad m^-2, respectively. Estimated magnetic field strengths are several microGauss within the IGrM and 0.1-1 microGauss in the WHIM. We estimate the plasma beta in both phases and show that magnetic pressure might be more dynamically important than in the ICM of more massive clusters or sparse cosmic web filaments. Our findings indicate that "missing baryons" in the WHIM likely extend beyond the gravitational radii of group-mass halos to Mpc scales, consistent with large-scale, outflow-driven "magnetised bubbles" seen in cosmological simulations. We demonstrate that RM grids are an effective method for detecting magnetised thermal gas at galaxy group interfaces and within the cosmic web. This approach complements X-ray and Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect methods, and when combined with Fast Radio Burst Dispersion Measures, data from the full POSSUM survey, comprising approximately a million RMs, will allow direct magnetic field measurements to further our understanding of baryon circulation in these environments and the magnetised universe., Comment: 15 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. We present radio observations of the galaxy cluster Abell S1136 at 888 MHz, using the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder radio telescope, as part of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe Early Science program. We compare these findings with data from the Murchison Widefield Array, XMM-Newton, the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, the Digitised Sky Survey, and the Australia Telescope Compact Array. Our analysis shows the X-ray and radio emission in Abell S1136 are closely aligned and centered on the BCG, while the X-ray temperature profile shows a relaxed cluster with no evidence of a cool core. We find that the diffuse radio emission in the centre of the cluster shows more structure than seen in previous low-resolution observations of this source, which appeared formerly as an amorphous radio blob, similar in appearance to a radio halo; our observations show the diffuse emission in the Abell S1136 galaxy cluster contains three narrow filamentary structures visible at 888 MHz, between$\sim 80$ and 140 kpc in length; however the properties of the diffuse emission do not fully match that of a radio (mini-)halo or (fossil) tailed radio source., Comment: To appear in PASA

We derive exact results for the critical Casimir force (CCF) within the Nagle-Kardar model with periodic boundary conditions (PBC's). The model represents one-dimensional Ising chain with long-range equivalent-neighbor ferromagnetic interactions of strength $J_{l}/N>0$ superimposed on the nearest-neighbor interactions of strength $J_{s}$ which could be either ferromagnetic ($J_{s}>0$) or antiferromagnetic ($J_{s}<0$). In the infinite system limit the model exhibits in the plane $(K_s=\beta J_s,K_l=\beta J_l)$ a critical line $2 K_l=\exp{\left(-2 K_s\right)}, K_s>-\ln3/4$, which ends at a tricritical point $(K_l=-\sqrt{3}/2, K_s=-\ln3/4)$. The critical Casimir amplitudes are: $\Delta_{\rm Cas}^{\rm (cr)}=1/4$ at the critical line, and $\Delta_{\rm Cas}^{\rm (tr)}=1/3$ at the tricritical point. Quite unexpectedly, with the imposed PBC's the CCF exhibits very unusual behavior as a function of temperature and magnetic field. It is \textit{repulsive} near the critical line and tricritical point, decaying rapidly with separation from those two singular regimes fast away from them and becoming \textit{attractive}, displaying in which the maximum amplitude of the attraction exceeds the maximum amplitude of repulsion. This represents a violation of the widely-accepted ``boundary condition rule,'' which holds that the CCF is attractive for equivalent BC's and repulsive for conflicting BC's \textit{independently} of the actual bulk universality class of the phase transition under investigation., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; to appear in PRE as a letter

Modern wide field radio surveys typically detect millions of objects. Techniques based on machine learning are proving to be useful for classifying large numbers of objects. The self-organizing map (SOM) is an unsupervised machine learning algorithm that projects a many-dimensional dataset onto a two- or three-dimensional lattice of neurons. This dimensionality reduction allows the user to visualize common features of the data better and develop algorithms for classifying objects that are not otherwise possible with large datasets. To this aim, we use the PINK implementation of a SOM. PINK incorporates rotation and flipping invariance so that the SOM algorithm may be applied to astronomical images. In this cookbook we provide instructions for working with PINK, including preprocessing the input images, training the model, and offering lessons learned through experimentation. The problem of imbalanced classes can be improved by careful selection of the training sample and increasing the number of neurons in the SOM (chosen by the user). Because PINK is not scale-invariant, structure can be smeared in the neurons. This can also be improved by increasing the number of neurons in the SOM. We also introduce pyink, a Python package used to read and write PINK binary files, assist in common preprocessing operations, perform standard analyses, visualize the SOM and preprocessed images, and create image-based annotations using a graphical interface. A tutorial is also provided to guide the user through the entire process. We present an application of PINK to VLA Sky Survey (VLASS) images. We demonstrate that the PINK is generally able to group VLASS sources with similar morphology together. We use the results of PINK to estimate the probability that a given source in the VLASS QuickLook Catalogue is actually due to sidelobe contamination., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Computing

The changes in colors across a galaxy are intimately connected to the galaxy's formation, growth, quenching history, and dust content. A particularly important epoch in the growth of galaxies is near $z \sim 2$ often referred to as `cosmic noon', where galaxies on average reach the peak of their star formation. We study a population of 125 cluster galaxies at $z \sim 1.6$ in three Hubble Space Telescope (HST) filters, F475W, F625W, and F160W, roughly corresponding to the rest-frame FUV, NUV, and r band, respectively. By comparing to a control sample of 200 field galaxies at similar redshift, we reveal clear, statistically significant differences in the overall spatially resolved colors and color gradients in galaxies across these two different environments. On average, cluster galaxies have redder UV colors in both the inner and outer regions bounded by $r_{\mathrm{50}}$, as well as an overall wider dispersion of outside-in color gradients. The presence of these observed differences, along with evidence from ancillary data from previous studies, strongly suggests that the environment drives these population-level color differences, by affecting the stellar populations and/or dust content., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

OLIMPO is a proposed Antarctic balloon-borne Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect (SZE) imager to study gas dynamics associated with structure formation along with the properties of the warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) residing in the connective filaments. During a 25 day flight OLIMPO will image a total of 10 z~0.05 galaxy clusters and 8 bridges at 145, 250, 365, and 460 GHz at an angular resolution of 1.0'-3.3'. The maps will be significantly deeper than those planned from CMB-S4 and CCAT-P, and will have excellent fidelity to the large angular scales of our low-z targets, which are difficult to probe from the ground. In combination with X-ray data from eROSITA and XRISM we will transform our current static view of galaxy clusters into a full dynamic picture by measuring the internal intra-cluster medium (ICM) velocity structure with the kinematic SZE, X-ray spectroscopy, and the power spectrum of ICM fluctuations. Radio observations from ASKAP and MeerKAT will be used to better understand the connection between ICM turbulence and shocks with the relativistic plasma. Beyond the cluster boundary, we will combine thermal SZE maps from OLIMPO with X-ray imaging from eROSITA to measure the thermodynamics of the WHIM residing in filaments, providing a better understanding of its properties and its contribution to the total baryon budget., Comment: From the proceedings of the mm Universe 2023

The Polarisation Sky Survey of the Universe's Magnetism (POSSUM) will conduct a sensitive $\sim$1 GHz radio polarization survey covering 20 000 square degrees of the Southern sky with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). In anticipation of the full survey, we analyze pilot observations of low-band (800-1087 MHz), mid-band (1316-1439 MHz), and combined-band observations for an extragalactic field and a Galactic-plane field (low-band only). Using the POSSUM processing pipeline, we produce prototype RM catalogs that are filtered to construct prototype RM grids. We assess typical RM grid densities and RM uncertainties and their dependence on frequency, bandwidth, and Galactic latitude. We present a median filter method for separating foreground diffuse emission from background components, and find that after application of the filter, 99.5% of measured RMs of simulated sources are within 3$\sigma$ of their true RM, with a typical loss of polarized intensity of 5% $\pm$ 5%. We find RM grid densities of 35.1, 30.6, 37.2, and 13.5 RMs per square degree and median uncertainties on RM measurements of 1.55, 12.82, 1.06, and 1.89 rad m$^{-2}$ for the median-filtered low-band, mid-band, combined-band, and Galactic observations, respectively. We estimate that the full POSSUM survey will produce an RM catalog of $\sim$775 000 RMs with median-filtered low-band observations and $\sim$877 000 RMs with median-filtered combined-band observations. We construct a structure function from the Galactic RM catalog, which shows a break at $0.7^{\circ}$, corresponding to a physical scale of 12-24 pc for the nearest spiral arm., Comment: 51 pages, 19 figures, 5 tables

We investigate the nature of a Galactic center source, G0.17+0.15, lying along the northern extension of the Radio Arc near l~0.2deg. G0.17+0.15 is an HII region located toward the eastern edge of the radio bubble, embedded within the highly polarized Galactic center eastern Lobe where a number of radio filaments appear to cross through the HII region. We report the detection of hydrogen and helium recombination lines with a radial velocity exceeding 140 km/s based on GBT and VLA observations. The morphology of G0.17+0.15, aided by kinematics, and spectral index characteristics, suggests the presence of an external pressure dragging and shredding the ionized gas. We argue that this ionized cloud is interacting with a bundle of radio filaments and is entrained by the ram pressure of the radio bubble, which itself is thought to be produced by cosmic-ray driven outflows at the Galactic center. In this interpretation, the gas streamers on the western side of G0.17+0.15 are stripped, accelerated from 0 to deltav~35 km/s, over a time scale roughly 8x10^4 years, implying that ablating ram pressure is ~700 eV cm-3, comparable to the ~10^3 eV cm-3 cosmic-ray driven wind pressure in the Galactic center region., Comment: 23 pages, 12 figures, MNRAS (in press)

Odd Radio Circles (ORCs) are a class of low surface brightness, circular objects approximately one arcminute in diameter. ORCs were recently discovered in the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) data, and subsequently confirmed with follow-up observations on other instruments, yet their origins remain uncertain. In this paper, we suggest that ORCs could be remnant lobes of powerful radio galaxies, re-energised by the passage of a shock. Using relativistic hydrodynamic simulations with synchrotron emission calculated in post-processing, we show that buoyant evolution of remnant radio lobes is alone too slow to produce the observed ORC morphology. However, the passage of a shock can produce both filled and edge-brightnened ORC-like morphologies for a wide variety of shock and observing orientations. Circular ORCs are predicted to have host galaxies near the geometric centre of the radio emission, consistent with observations of these objects. Significantly offset hosts are possible for elliptical ORCs, potentially causing challenges for accurate host galaxy identification. Clusters of galaxies have been found to host Mpc-scale diffuse, non-thermal radio emission in the form of central radio halos and peripheral relics. Turbulence and shock-related processes in the intra-cluster medium are generally considered responsible for the emission, though details of these processes are still not clear. The low surface brightness makes detection of the emission a challenge, but with recent surveys with high-sensitivity radio telescopes we are beginning to build large samples of these sources. The Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) is a Southern Sky survey being performed by the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) over the next few years and is well-suited to detect and characterise such emission. To assess prospects of the full survey, we have performed a pilot search of diffuse sources in 71 clusters from the Planck Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) cluster catalogue (PSZ2) found in archival ASKAP observations. After re-imaging the archival data and performing both (u,v)-plane and image-plane angular scale filtering, we detect 21 radio halos (12 for the first time, excluding an additional six candidates), 11 relics (in seven clusters, and six for the first time, excluding a further five candidate relics), along with 12 other, unclassified diffuse radio sources. From these detections, we predict the full EMU survey will uncover up to ~254 radio halos and ~85 radio relics in the 858 PSZ2 clusters that will be covered by EMU. The percentage of clusters found to host diffuse emission in this work is similar to the number reported in recent cluster surveys with the LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) Two-metre Sky Survey (Botteon, et al. 2022a, A&A, 660, A78), suggesting EMU will complement similar searches being performed in the Northern Sky and provide us with statistically significant samples of halos and relics at the completion of the full survey., Comment: 46 pages, 116 individual figure files, accepted in PASA

Attention in the literature has increasingly turned to the issue of the dependence on ensemble and boundary conditions of fluctuation-induced forces. We have recently investigated this problem in the one-dimensional Ising model with periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions (Annals of Physics {\bf 459}, 169533 (2023)). Significant variations of the behavior of Casimir and Helmholtz forces was observed, depending on both ensemble and boundary conditions. Here we extend our study by considering the problem in the important case of Dirichlet (also termed free, or missing neighbors) boundary conditions. The advantage of the mathematical formulation of the problem in terms of Chebyshev polynomials is demonstrated and, in this approach, expressions for the partition functions in the canonical and the grand canonical ensembles are presented. Many quiescent galaxies discovered in the early Universe by \textit{JWST} raise fundamental questions on when and how these galaxies became and stayed quenched. Making use of the latest version of the semi-analytic model GAEA that provides good agreement with the observed quenched fractions up to $z\sim 3$, we make predictions for the expected fractions of quiescent galaxies up to $z\sim 7$ and analyze the main quenching mechanism. We find that in a simulated box of $685~{\rm Mpc}$ on a side, the first quenched massive ($M_{\star} \sim 10^{11} {\rm M}_{\odot}$), Milky Way mass, and low mass ($M_{\star} \sim 10^{9.5} {\rm M}_{\odot}$ ) galaxies appear at $z\sim 4.5$, $z\sim 6.2$, and before $z = 7$. Most quenched galaxies identified at early redshifts remain quenched for more than 1 Gyr. Independently of galaxy stellar mass, the dominant quenching mechanism at high redshift is accretion disk feedback (quasar winds) from a central massive black hole, which is triggered by mergers in massive and MW-mass galaxies, and by disk instabilities in low-mass galaxies. We have identified 189 candidate $z > 1.3$ protoclusters and clusters in the LSST Deep Drilling Fields. This sample will enable the measurement of the metal enrichment and star formation history of clusters during their early assembly period through the direct measurement of the rate of supernovae identified through the LSST. The protocluster sample was selected from galaxy overdensities in a $Spitzer$/IRAC colour-selected sample using criteria that were optimised for protocluster purity using a realistic lightcone. Our tests reveal that $60-80\%$ of the identified candidates are likely to be genuine protoclusters or clusters, which is corroborated by a $\sim4\sigma$ stacked X-ray signal from these structures. We provide photometric redshift estimates for 47 candidates which exhibit strong peaks in the photo-$z$ distribution of their candidate members. However, the lack of a photo-$z$ peak does not mean a candidate is not genuine, since we find a stacked X-ray signal of similar significance from both the candidates that exhibit photo-$z$ peaks and those that do not. Tests on the lightcone reveal that our pursuit of a pure sample of protoclusters results in that sample being highly incomplete ($\sim4\%$) and heavily biased towards larger, richer, more massive, and more centrally concentrated protoclusters than the total protocluster population. Most ($\sim75\%$) of the selected protoclusters are likely to have a maximum collapsed halo mass of between $10^{13}-10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, with only $\sim25\%$ likely to be collapsed clusters above $10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$. However, the aforementioned bias ensures our sample is $\sim50\%$ complete for structures that have already collapsed into clusters more massive than $10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$., Comment: 18 pages, 14 figures

We establish a density one version of Braak's conjecture on the fine structure of the spectrum of the quantum Rabi model, as well as a recent conjecture of Braak, Nguyen, Reyes-Bustos and Wakayama on the nearest neighbor spacings of the spectrum. The proof uses a three-term asymptotic expansion for large eigenvalues due to Boutet de Monvel and Zielinski, and a number theoretic argument from uniform distribution theory.

A new class of extragalactic astronomical sources discovered in 2021, named Odd Radio Circles (ORCs, Norris et al. 2021), are large rings of faint, diffuse radio continuum emission spanning ~1 arcminute on the sky. Galaxies at the centers of several ORCs have photometric redshifts of z~0.3-0.6, implying physical scales of several 100 kiloparsecs in diameter for the radio emission, the origin of which is unknown. Here we report spectroscopic data on an ORC including strong [OII] emission tracing ionized gas in the central galaxy of ORC4 at z=0.4512. The physical extent of the [OII] emission is ~40 kpc in diameter, larger than expected for a typical early-type galaxy (Pandya et al, 2017) but an order of magnitude smaller than the large-scale radio continuum emission. We detect a ~200 km/s velocity gradient across the [OII] nebula, as well as a high velocity dispersion of ~180 km/s. The [OII] equivalent width (EW, ~50 Ang) is extremely high for a quiescent galaxy. The morphology, kinematics, and strength of the [OII] emission are consistent with the infall of shock ionized gas near the galaxy, following a larger-scale, outward moving shock driven by a galactic wind. We investigate exponential sums modulo primes whose phase function is a sparse polynomial, with exponents growing with the prime. In particular, such sums model those which appear in the study of the quantum cat map. While they are not amenable to treatment by algebro-geometric methods such as Weil's bounds, Bourgain (2005) gave a nontrivial estimate for these and more general sums. In this work we obtain explicit bounds with reasonable savings over various types of averaging. We also initiate the study of the value distribution of these sums.

Recently, attention has turned to the issue of the ensemble dependence of fluctuation induced forces. As a noteworthy example, in $O(n)$ systems the statistical mechanics underlying such forces can be shown to differ in the constant $\vec{M}$ magnetic canonical ensemble (CE) from those in the widely-studied constant $\vec{h}$ grand canonical ensemble (GCE). Here, the counterpart of the Casimir force in the GCE is the \textit{Helmholtz} force in the CE. Given the difference between the two ensembles for finite systems, it is reasonable to anticipate that these forces will have, in general, different behavior for the same geometry and boundary conditions. Here we present some exact results for both the Casimir and the Helmholtz force in the case of the one-dimensional Ising model subject to periodic and antiperiodic boundary conditions and compare their behavior. We note that the Ising model has recently being solved in Phys.Rev. E {\bf 106} L042103(2022), using a combinatorial approach, for the case of fixed value $M$ of its order parameter. Here we derive exact result for the partition function of the one-dimensional Ising model of $N$ spins and fixed value $M$ using the transfer matrix method (TMM); earlier results obtained via the TMM were limited to $M=0$ and $N$ even. As a byproduct, we derive several specific integral representations of the hypergeometric function of Gauss. Using those results, we rigorously derive that the free energies of the CE and grand GCE are related to each other via Legendre transformation in the thermodynamic limit, and establish the leading finite-size corrections for the canonical case, which turn out to be much more pronounced than the corresponding ones in the case of the GCE., Comment: 35 pages, 7 figures. We study the zeros of cusp forms of large weight for the modular group, which have a very large order of vanishing at infinity, so that they have a fixed number D of finite zeros in the fundamental domain. We show that for large weight the zeros of these forms cluster near D vertical lines, with the zeros of a weight k form lying at height approximately log(k). This is in contrast to previously known cases, such as Eisenstein series, where the zeros lie on the circular part of the boundary of the fundamental domain, or the case of cuspidal Hecke eigenforms where the zeros are uniformly distributed in the fundamental domain. Our method uses the Faber polynomials. The Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP) radio telescope has carried out a survey of the entire Southern Sky at 887.5MHz. The wide area, high angular resolution, and broad bandwidth provided by the low-band Rapid ASKAP Continuum Survey (RACS-low) allow the production of a next-generation rotation measure (RM) grid across the entire Southern Sky. Here we introduce this project as Spectral and Polarisation in Cutouts of Extragalactic sources from RACS (SPICE-RACS). In our first data release, we image 30 RACS-low fields in Stokes $I$, $Q$, $U$ at 25'' angular resolution, across 744 to 1032MHz with 1MHz spectral resolution. Using a bespoke, highly parallelised, software pipeline we are able to rapidly process wide-area spectro-polarimetric ASKAP observations. Notably, we use 'postage stamp' cutouts to assess the polarisation properties of \ncomponents\ radio components detected in total intensity. We find that our Stokes $Q$ and $U$ images have an rms noise of ~80$\mu$Jy/PSF, and our correction for instrumental polarisation leakage allows us to characterise components with >1% polarisation fraction over most of the field of view. We produce a broadband polarised radio component catalogue that contains \nrms\ RM measurements over an area of ~1300deg^2 with an average error in RM of 1.6+1.1-1.0rad/m^2, and an average linear polarisation fraction 3.4+3.0-1.6%. We determine this subset of components using the conditions that the polarised signal-to-noise ratio is $>8$, the polarisation fraction is above our estimated polarised leakage, and the Stokes $I$ spectrum has a reliable model. Our catalogue provides an areal density of $4\pm2$ RMs/deg^2; an increase of $\sim4$ times over the previous state-of-the-art (Taylor et al. 2009). Meaning that, having used just 3% of the RACS-low sky area, we have produced the 3rd largest RM catalogue to date. Protoclusters are the densest regions in the distant universe ($z>2$) and are the progenitors of massive galaxy clusters ($M_{halo}>10^{14}{\rm M}_\odot$) in the local universe. They undoubtedly play a key role in early massive galaxy evolution and they may host the earliest sites of galaxy quenching or even induce extreme states of star formation. Studying protoclusters therefore not only gives us a window into distant galaxy formation but also provides an important link in our understanding of how dense structures grow over time and modify the galaxies within them. Current protocluster samples are completely unable to address these points because they are small and selected in a heterogeneous way. We propose the Roman-Cosmic Noon survey, whose centerpiece is an extremely deep (30ksec) and wide area (10 deg$^2$) prism slitless spectroscopy survey to identify the full range of galaxy structures at $210^{10.5} {\rm M}_\odot$ across the full range of star formation histories as well as many more lower mass star-forming galaxies. The survey will also contain field galaxies to much lower masses than in the High Latitude Wide Area Survey, but over an area dwarfing any current or planned deep spectroscopy probe at $z>2$. With the prism spectroscopy and some modest additional imaging this survey will measure precise stellar mass functions, quenched fractions, galaxy and protocluster morphologies, stellar ages, emission-line based SFRs, and metallicities. We explore models of massive ($\gt 10^{10}~{\rm M}_{\odot}$) satellite quenching in massive clusters at $z\gtrsim1$ using an MCMC framework, focusing on two primary parameters: $R_{\rm quench}$ (the host-centric radius at which quenching begins) and $\tau_{\rm quench}$ (the timescale upon which a satellite quenches after crossing $R_{\rm quench}$). Our MCMC analysis shows two local maxima in the 1D posterior probability distribution of $R_{\rm quench}$ at approximately $0.25$ and $1.0~R_{\rm{200}}$. Analyzing four distinct solutions in the $\tau_{\rm quench}$-$R_{\rm quench}$ parameter space, nearly all of which yield quiescent fractions consistent with observational data from the GOGREEN survey, we investigate whether these solutions represent distinct quenching pathways and find that they can be separated between \textquote{starvation} and \textquote{core quenching} scenarios. The starvation pathway is characterized by quenching timescales that are roughly consistent with the total cold gas (H$_{2}$+H{\scriptsize I}) depletion timescale at intermediate $z$, while core quenching is characterized by satellites with relatively high line-of-sight velocities that quench on short timescales ($\sim 0.25$ Gyr) after reaching the inner region of the cluster ($\lt 0.30~R_{\rm{200}}$). Lastly, we break the degeneracy between these solutions by comparing the observed properties of transition galaxies from the GOGREEN survey. We conclude that only the \textquote{starvation} pathway is consistent with the projected phase-space distribution and relative abundance of transition galaxies at $z \sim 1$. We present a comparison between the performance of a selection of source finders using a new software tool called Hydra. The companion paper, Paper~I, introduced the Hydra tool and demonstrated its performance using simulated data. Here we apply Hydra to assess the performance of different source finders by analysing real observational data taken from the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) Pilot Survey. EMU is a wide-field radio continuum survey whose primary goal is to make a deep ($20\mu$Jy/beam RMS noise), intermediate angular resolution ($15^{\prime\prime}$), 1\,GHz survey of the entire sky south of $+30^{\circ}$ declination, and expecting to detect and catalogue up to 40 million sources. With the main EMU survey expected to begin in 2022 it is highly desirable to understand the performance of radio image source finder software and to identify an approach that optimises source detection capabilities. Hydra has been developed to refine this process, as well as to deliver a range of metrics and source finding data products from multiple source finders. We present the performance of the five source finders tested here in terms of their completeness and reliability statistics, their flux density and source size measurements, and an exploration of case studies to highlight finder-specific limitations., Comment: Paper accepted for publication in PASA

The latest generation of radio surveys are now producing sky survey images containing many millions of radio sources. In this context it is highly desirable to understand the performance of radio image source finder (SF) software and to identify an approach that optimises source detection capabilities. We have created Hydra to be an extensible multi-SF and cataloguing tool that can be used to compare and evaluate different SFs. Hydra, which currently includes the SFs Aegean, Caesar, ProFound, PyBDSF, and Selavy, provides for the addition of new SFs through containerisation and configuration files. The SF input RMS noise and island parameters are optimised to a 90\% ''percentage real detections'' threshold (calculated from the difference between detections in the real and inverted images), to enable comparison between SFs. Hydra provides completeness and reliability diagnostics through observed-deep ($\mathcal{D}$) and generated-shallow ($\mathcal{S}$) images, as well as other statistics. In addition, it has a visual inspection tool for comparing residual images through various selection filters, such as S/N bins in completeness or reliability. The tool allows the user to easily compare and evaluate different SFs in order to choose their desired SF, or a combination thereof. This paper is part one of a two part series. In this paper we introduce the Hydra software suite and validate its $\mathcal{D/S}$ metrics using simulated data. We present a novel natural language processing (NLP) approach to deriving plain English descriptors for science cases otherwise restricted by obfuscating technical terminology. We address the limitations of common radio galaxy morphology classifications by applying this approach. We experimentally derive a set of semantic tags for the Radio Galaxy Zoo EMU (Evolutionary Map of the Universe) project and the wider astronomical community. We collect 8,486 plain English annotations of radio galaxy morphology, from which we derive a taxonomy of tags. The tags are plain English. The result is an extensible framework which is more flexible, more easily communicated, and more sensitive to rare feature combinations which are indescribable using the current framework of radio astronomy classifications., Comment: 17 pages, 11 Figures, Accepted at MNRAS

Polarized synchrotron emission from multiple Faraday depths can be separated by calculating the complex Fourier transform of the Stokes' parameters as a function of the wavelength squared, known as Faraday Synthesis. As commonly implemented, the transform introduces an additional term $\lambda_0^2$, which broadens the real and imaginary spectra, but not the amplitude spectrum. We use idealized tests to investigate whether additional information can be recovered with a clean process restoring beam set to the narrower width of the peak in the real ``full" resolution spectrum with $\lambda_0^2=0$. We find that the $\lambda_0^2$ choice makes no difference, except for the use of a smaller restoring beam. With this smaller beam, the accuracy and phase stability are unchanged for single Faraday components. However, using the smaller restoring beam for multiple Faraday components we find a) better discrimination of the components, b) significant reductions in blending of structures in tomography images, and c) reduction of spurious features in the Faraday spectra and tomography maps. We also discuss the limited accuracy of information on scales comparable to the width of the amplitude spectrum peak, and note a clean-bias, reducing the recovered amplitudes. We present examples using MeerKAT L-band data. We also revisit the maximum width in Faraday depth to which surveys are sensitive, and introduce the variable $W_{max}$, the width for which the power drops by a factor of 2. We find that most surveys cannot resolve continuous Faraday distributions unless the narrower full restoring beam is used., Comment: 17 pages, 23 figures, published in MNRAS

We investigate the role of dense environments in suppressing star formation by studying $\rm \log_{10}(M_\star/M_\odot) > 9.7$ star-forming galaxies in nine clusters from the Local Cluster Survey ($0.0137 < z < 0.0433$) and a large comparison field sample drawn from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We compare the star-formation rate (SFR) versus stellar mass relation as a function of environment and morphology. After carefully controlling for mass, we find that in all environments, the degree of SFR suppression increases with increasing bulge-to-total (B/T) ratio. In addition, the SFRs of cluster and infall galaxies at a fixed mass are more suppressed than their field counterparts at all values of B/T. These results suggest a quenching mechanism that is linked to bulge growth that operates in all environments and an additional mechanism that further reduces the SFRs of galaxies in dense environments. We limit the sample to $B/T < 0.3$ galaxies to control for the trends with morphology and find that the excess population of cluster galaxies with suppressed SFRs persists. We model the timescale associated with the decline of SFRs in dense environments and find that the observed SFRs of the cluster core galaxies are consistent with a range of models including: a mechanism that acts slowly and continuously over a long (2-5 Gyr) timescale, and a more rapid ($<1$ Gyr) quenching event that occurs after a delay period of 1-6 Gyr. Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) can often be identified in radio images as two lobes, sometimes connected to a core by a radio jet. This multi-component morphology unfortunately creates difficulties for source-finders, leading to components that are a) separate parts of a wider whole, and b) offset from the multiwavelength cross identification of the host galaxy. In this work we define an algorithm, \textsc{DRAGNhunter}, for identifying Double Radio Sources associated with Active Galactic Nuclei (DRAGNs) from component catalog data in the first epoch \textit{Quick Look} images of the high resolution ($\approx 3''$ beam size) Very Large Array Sky Survey (VLASS). We use \textsc{DRAGNhunter} to construct a catalog of $>17,000$ DRAGNs in VLASS for which contamination from spurious sources is estimated at $\approx 11\,\%$. A `high-fidelity' sample consisting of $90\,\%$ of our catalog is identified for which contamination is $<3\,\%$. Host galaxies are found for $\approx 13,000$ DRAGNs as well as for an additional $234,000$ single-component radio sources. Using these data we explore the properties of our DRAGNs, finding them to be typically consistent with Fanaroff-Riley class II sources and allowing us to report the discovery of $31$ new giant radio galaxies identified using VLASS., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJS. 33 pages, 25 figures, 6 tables. We present results on the properties of extreme gas outflows in massive ($\rm M_* \sim$10$^{11} \ \rm M_{\odot}$), compact, starburst ($\rm SFR \sim$$200 \, \rm M_{\odot} \ yr^{-1}$) galaxies at z = $0.4-0.7$ with very high star formation surface densities ($\rm \Sigma_{SFR} \sim$$2000 \,\rm M_{\odot} \ yr^{-1} \ kpc^{-2}$). Using optical Keck/HIRES spectroscopy of 14 HizEA starburst galaxies we identify outflows with maximum velocities of $820 - 2860$ \kmps. High-resolution spectroscopy allows us to measure precise column densities and covering fractions as a function of outflow velocity and characterize the kinematics and structure of the cool gas outflow phase (T $\sim$10$^4$ K). We find substantial variation in the absorption profiles, which likely reflects the complex morphology of inhomogeneously-distributed, clumpy gas and the intricacy of the turbulent mixing layers between the cold and hot outflow phases. There is not a straightforward correlation between the bursts in the galaxies' star formation histories and their wind absorption line profiles, as might naively be expected for starburst-driven winds. The lack of strong \mgii \ absorption at the systemic velocity is likely an orientation effect, where the observations are down the axis of a blowout. We infer high mass outflow rates of $\rm \sim$50 $-$ 2200 $\rm M_{\odot} \, yr^{-1}$, assuming a fiducial outflow size of 5 kpc, and mass loading factors of $\eta\sim$5 for most of the sample. %with $\eta\sim$20 for two galaxies. The Makani galaxy hosts the poster child of a galactic wind on scales of the circumgalactic medium. It consists of a two-episode wind in which the slow, outer wind originated 400 Myr ago (Episode I; R_I = 20-50 kpc) and the fast, inner wind is 7 Myr old (Episode II; R_II = 0-20 kpc). While this wind contains ionized, neutral, and molecular gas, the physical state and mass of the most extended phase--the warm, ionized gas--is unknown. Here we present Keck optical spectra of the Makani outflow. These allow us to detect hydrogen lines out to r = 30-40 kpc and thus constrain the mass, momentum, and energy in the wind. Many collisionally-excited lines are detected throughout the wind, and their line ratios are consistent with 200-400 km/s shocks that power the ionized gas, with v_shock = $\sigma$_wind. Combining shock models, density-sensitive line ratios, and mass and velocity measurements, we estimate that the ionized mass and outflow rate in the Episode II wind could be as high as that of the molecular gas: M_II(HII) ~ M_II(H_2) = (1-2)x10^9 Msun and dM/dt_II(HII) ~ dM/dt_II(H_2) = 170-250 Msun/yr. The outer wind has slowed, so that dM/dt_I(HII) ~ 10 Msun/yr, but it contains more ionized gas: M_I(HII) = 5x10^9 Msun. The momentum and energy in the recent Episode II wind imply a momentum-driven flow (p ``boost" ~ 7) driven by the hot ejecta and radiation pressure from the Eddington-limited, compact starburst. Multifrequency studies of galaxy clusters are crucial for inferring their dynamical states and physics. Moreover, these studies allow us to investigate cluster-embedded sources, whose evolution is affected by the physical and dynamical condition of the cluster itself. So far, these kinds of studies have been preferentially conducted on clusters visible from the northern hemisphere due to the high-fidelity imaging capabilities of ground-based radio interferometers located there. In this paper, we conducted a multifrequency study of the poorly known galaxy cluster Abell 3718. We investigated the unknown origin of an extended radio source with a length of $\sim$612 kpc at 943 MHz detected in images from the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) and POlarisation Sky Survey of the Universe's Magnetism (POSSUM) surveys. We analyzed optical and X-ray data to infer the dynamical state of the cluster and, in particular, the merger activity. We conducted a radio spectral index study from 943 MHz up to 9 GHz. We also evaluated the polarization properties of the brightest cluster-embedded sources to understand if they are related to the radio emission observed on larger scales. We study the variance of a linear statistic of the Laplace eigenvalues on a hyperbolic surface, when the surface varies over the moduli space of all surfaces of fixed genus, sampled at random according to the Weil-Petersson measure. The ensemble variance of the linear statistic was recently shown to coincide with that of the corresponding statistic in the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) of random matrix theory, in the double limit of first taking large genus and then shrinking size of the energy window. In this note we show that in this same limit, the energy variance for a typical surface is close to the GOE result, a feature called "ergodicity" in the random matrix theory literature., Comment: 13 pages

Luminous Red Galaxies, or LRGs, are representative of the most massive galaxies and were originally selected in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey as good tracers of large scale structure. They are dominated by by uniformly old stellar populations, have low star formation rates, early type morphologies, and little cold gas. Despite having old stellar populations and little in situ star formation, studies have shown that they have grown their stellar mass since z=1, implying that they grow predominantly via the accretion of satellites. Tests of this picture have been limited because of the lack of deep imaging data sets that both covers a large enough area of the sky to contain substantial numbers of LRGs and that also is deep enough to detect faint satellites. We use the 25 square degree Early Data Release (EDR) of the DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys to characterize the satellite galaxy population of LRGs out to z=0.65. The DESI Legacy Imaging Surveys are comprised of grz imaging to 2-2.5 mag deeper than SDSS and with better image quality. We use a new statistical background technique to identify excess populations of putative satellite galaxies around 1823 LRGs at 0.2

We study the fluctuations of smooth linear statistics of Laplace eigenvalues of compact hyperbolic surfaces lying in short energy windows, when averaged over the moduli space of surfaces of a given genus. The average is taken with respect to the Weil-Petersson measure. We show that first taking the large genus limit, then a short window limit, the distribution tends to a Gaussian. The variance was recently shown to be given by the corresponding quantity for the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE), and the Gaussian fluctuations are also consistent with those in Random Matrix Theory, as conjectured in the physics literature for a fixed surface.

We report the discovery of a unique object in the MeerKAT Galaxy Cluster Legacy Survey (MGCLS) using the machine learning anomaly detection framework Astronomaly. This strange, ring-like source is 30' from the MGCLS field centred on Abell 209, and is not readily explained by simple physical models. With an assumed host galaxy at redshift 0.55, the luminosity (10^25 W/Hz) is comparable to powerful radio galaxies. The source consists of a ring of emission 175 kpc across, quadrilateral enhanced brightness regions bearing resemblance to radio jets, two "ears" separated by 368 kpc, and a diffuse envelope. All of the structures appear spectrally steep, ranging from -1.0 to -1.5. The ring has high polarization (25%) except on the bright patches (<10%). We compare this source to the Odd Radio Circles recently discovered in ASKAP data and discuss several possible physical models, including a termination shock from starburst activity, an end-on radio galaxy, and a supermassive black hole merger event. No simple model can easily explain the observed structure of the source. We define deriving semantic class targets as a novel multi-modal task. By doing so, we aim to improve classification schemes in the physical sciences which can be severely abstracted and obfuscating. Recent observations have shown that the environmental quenching of galaxies at z ~ 1 is qualitatively different to that in the local Universe. However, the physical origin of these differences has not yet been elucidated. In addition, while low-redshift comparisons between observed environmental trends and the predictions of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations are now routine, there have been relatively few comparisons at higher redshifts to date. Here we confront three state-of-the-art suites of simulations (BAHAMAS+MACSIS, EAGLE+Hydrangea, IllustrisTNG) with state-of-the-art observations of the field and cluster environments from the COSMOS/UltraVISTA and GOGREEN surveys, respectively, at z ~ 1 to assess the realism of the simulations and gain insight into the evolution of environmental quenching. We show that while the simulations generally reproduce the stellar content and the stellar mass functions of quiescent and star-forming galaxies in the field, all the simulations struggle to capture the observed quenching of satellites in the cluster environment, in that they are overly efficient at quenching low-mass satellites. Furthermore, two of the suites do not sufficiently quench the highest-mass galaxies in clusters, perhaps a result of insufficient feedback from AGN. The origin of the discrepancy at low stellar masses (Mstar <~ 1E10 Msun), which is present in all the simulations in spite of large differences in resolution, feedback implementations, and hydrodynamical solvers, is unclear. We present a measurement of the intrinsic space density of intermediate redshift ($z\sim0.5$), massive ($M_{*} \sim 10^{11} \ \text{M}_{\odot}$), compact ($R_{e} \sim 100$ pc) starburst ($\Sigma_{SFR} \sim 1000 \ \text{M}_{\odot} \ \text{yr}^{-1} \text{kpc}^{-1}$) galaxies with tidal features indicative of them having undergone recent major mergers. A subset of them host kiloparsec scale, $>1000 \ \text{km}\ \text{s}^{-1}$ outflows and have little indication of AGN activity, suggesting that extreme star formation can be a primary driver of large-scale feedback. The aim for this paper is to calculate their space density so we can place them in a better cosmological context. We do this by empirically modeling the stellar populations of massive, compact starburst galaxies. We determine the average timescale for which galaxies that have recently undergone an extreme nuclear starburst would be targeted and included in our spectroscopically selected sample. We find that massive, compact starburst galaxies targeted by our criteria would be selectable for $\sim 148 ^{+27}_{-24}$ Myr and have an intrinsic space density $n_{\text{CS}} \sim (1.1^{+0.5}_{-0.3}) \times 10^{-6} \ \ \text{Mpc}^{-3}$. This space density is broadly consistent with our $z\sim0.5$ compact starbursts being the most extremely compact and star forming low redshift analogs of the compact star forming galaxies in the early Universe as well as them being the progenitors to a fraction of intermediate redshift post starburst and compact quiescent galaxies., Comment: 27 pages, 13 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We investigate the resolved kinematics of the molecular gas, as traced by ALMA in CO (2-1), of 25 cluster member galaxies across three different clusters at a redshift of $z\sim1.6$. This is the first large-scale analysis of the molecular gas kinematics of cluster galaxies at this redshift. By separately estimating the rotation curve of the approaching and receding side of each galaxy via kinematic modeling, we quantify the difference in total circular velocity to characterize the overall kinematic asymmetry of each galaxy. 3/14 of the galaxies in our sample that we are able to model have similar degrees of asymmetry as that observed in galaxies in the field at similar redshift. However, this leaved 11/14 galaxies in our sample with significantly higher asymmetry, and some of these galaxies have degrees of asymmetry of up to $\sim$50 times higher than field galaxies observed at similar redshift. Some of these extreme cases also have one-sided tail-like morphology seen in the molecular gas, supporting a scenario of tidal and/or ram pressure interaction. Such stark differences in the kinematic asymmetry in clusters versus the field suggest the evolutionary influence of dense environments, established as being a major driver of galaxy evolution at low-redshift, is also active in the high-redshift universe., Comment: Submission pre-referee report
