Organic electrochemical transistors are extensively studied for applications ranging from bioelectronics to analog and neuromorphic computing. Despite significant advances, the fundamental interactions between the polymer semiconductor channel and the electrolyte, which critically determine the device performance, remain underexplored. Here, we examine the coupling between the benchmark semiconductor PEDOT:PSS and ionic liquids to explain the bistable and non-volatile behavior observed in OECTs. Using X-ray scattering and spectroscopy techniques, we demonstrate how the electrolyte modifies the channel composition, enhances molecular order, and reshapes the electronic and energetic landscape. Notably, the observed bistability arises from asymmetric and path-dependent energetics during doping and dedoping, resulting in two distinct, stable states, driven by a direct interaction between the electronic and ionic charge carriers. These findings highlight a compelling method to control charge carrier dynamics via the electrolyte, positioning it as a powerful yet underutilized tool for enabling novel device functionalities.

Strain induced through fabrication, both by patterning and capping, can be used to change the properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials or other thin films. Here, we explore how capping layers impart strain to monolayer MoS$_{2}$ using direct x-ray diffraction measurements of the lattice. We first observe the impact of naturally-oxidized metal layers ($\sim$1.5 nm Al) and subsequently-deposited Al$_{2}$O$_{3}$ (15 nm to 25 nm thick) on the 2D material, and find that the strain imparted to MoS$_{2}$ is mainly controlled by the interfacial adhesion of the seed layer in addition to the substrate adhesion. Then, using test structures which mimic transistor contacts, we measure enhanced strain from such patterns compared to blanket films. Furthermore, we observe significant tensile strain - up to 2% in monolayer MoS$_{2}$, one of the largest experimental values to date on a rigid substrate - due to highly-stressed blanket metal capping layers. These results provide direct evidence supporting previous reports of strain effects in 2D material devices.

The human brain has immense learning capabilities at extreme energy efficiencies and scale that no artificial system has been able to match. For decades, reverse engineering the brain has been one of the top priorities of science and technology research. Despite numerous efforts, conventional electronics-based methods have failed to match the scalability, energy efficiency, and self-supervised learning capabilities of the human brain. On the other hand, very recent progress in the development of new generations of photonic and electronic memristive materials, device technologies, and 3D electronic-photonic integrated circuits (3D EPIC ) promise to realize new brain-derived neuromorphic systems with comparable connectivity, density, energy-efficiency, and scalability. When combined with bio-realistic learning algorithms and architectures, it may be possible to realize an 'artificial brain' prototype with general self-learning capabilities. This paper argues the possibility of reverse-engineering the brain through architecting a prototype of a brain-derived neuromorphic computing system consisting of artificial electronic, ionic, photonic materials, devices, and circuits with dynamicity resembling the bio-plausible molecular, neuro/synaptic, neuro-circuit, and multi-structural hierarchical macro-circuits of the brain based on well-tested computational models. We further argue the importance of bio-plausible local learning algorithms applicable to the neuromorphic computing system that capture the flexible and adaptive unsupervised and self-supervised learning mechanisms central to human intelligence. Most importantly, we emphasize that the unique capabilities in brain-derived neuromorphic computing prototype systems will enable us to understand links between specific neuronal and network-level properties with system-level functioning and behavior., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures

Exchanging hydrophobic alkyl-based side chains to hydrophilic glycol-based side chains is a widely adopted method for improving mixed-transport device performance, despite the impact on solid state packing and polymer-electrolyte interactions being poorly understood. Presented here is a Molecular Dynamics (MD) force field for modelling alkoxylated and glycolated polythiophenes. The force field is validated against known packing motifs for their monomer crystals. MD simulations, coupled with X-ray Diffraction (XRD), show that alkoxylated polythiophenes will pack with a `tilted stack' and straight interdigitating side chains, whilst their glycolated counterpart will pack with a `deflected stack' and an s-bend side chain configuration. MD simulations reveal water penetration pathways into the alkoxylated and glycolated crystals - through the {\pi}-stack and through the lamellar stack respectively. Finally, the two distinct ways tri-ethylene glycol polymers can bind to cations are revealed, showing the formation of a meta-stable single bound state, or an energetically deep double bound state, both with a strong side chain length dependance. The minimum energy pathways for the formation of the chelates are identified, showing the physical process through which cations can bind to one or two side chains of a glycolated polythiophene, with consequences for ion transport in bithiophene semiconductors., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

Modern computation based on the von Neumann architecture is today a mature cutting-edge science. In the Von Neumann architecture, processing and memory units are implemented as separate blocks interchanging data intensively and continuously. This data transfer is responsible for a large part of the power consumption. The next generation computer technology is expected to solve problems at the exascale with 1018 calculations each second. Even though these future computers will be incredibly powerful, if they are based on von Neumann type architectures, they will consume between 20 and 30 megawatts of power and will not have intrinsic physically built-in capabilities to learn or deal with complex data as our brain does. These needs can be addressed by neuromorphic computing systems which are inspired by the biological concepts of the human brain. This new generation of computers has the potential to be used for the storage and processing of large amounts of digital information with much lower power consumption than conventional processors. Among their potential future applications, an important niche is moving the control from data centers to edge devices. The aim of this Roadmap is to present a snapshot of the present state of neuromorphic technology and provide an opinion on the challenges and opportunities that the future holds in the major areas of neuromorphic technology, namely materials, devices, neuromorphic circuits, neuromorphic algorithms, applications, and ethics. The Roadmap is a collection of perspectives where leading researchers in the neuromorphic community provide their own view about the current state and the future challenges. A new class of donor-acceptor (D-A) copolymers found to produce high charge carrier mobilities competitive with amorphous silicon ($> 1 cm^{2}V^{-1}s^{-1}$) exhibits the puzzling microstructure of substantial local order, however lacking long-range order and crystallinity previously deemed necessary for achieving high mobility. Here, we demonstrate the application of low-dose transmission electron microscopy to image and quantify the nanoscale and mesoscale organization of an archetypal D-A copolymer across areas comparable to electronic devices (~ $9 {\mu}m^{2}$). The local structure is spatially resolved by mapping the backbone (001) spacing reflection, revealing nanocrystallites of aligned polymer chains over nearly the entire film. Analysis of the nanoscale structure of its ordered domains suggests significant short- and medium-range order and preferential grain boundary orientations. Synaptic devices with linear high-speed switching can accelerate learning in artificial neural networks (ANNs) embodied in hardware. Conventional resistive memories however suffer from high write noise and asymmetric conductance tuning, preventing parallel programming of ANN arrays as needed to surpass conventional computing efficiency. Electrochemical random-access memories (ECRAMs), where resistive switching occurs by ion insertion into a redox-active channel address these challenges due to their linear switching and low noise. ECRAMs using two-dimensional (2D) materials and metal oxides suffer from slow ion kinetics, whereas organic ECRAMs enable high-speed operation but face significant challenges towards on-chip integration due to poor temperature stability of polymers. Here, we demonstrate ECRAMs using 2D titanium carbide (Ti3C2Tx) MXene that combines the high speed of organics and the integration compatibility of inorganic materials in a single high-performance device. Our ECRAMs combine the speed, linearity, write noise, switching energy and endurance metrics essential for parallel acceleration of ANNs, and importantly, they are stable after heat treatment needed for back-end-of-line integration with Si electronics. The high speed and performance of these ECRAMs introduces MXenes, a large family of 2D carbides and nitrides with more than 30 compositions synthesized to date, as very promising candidates for devices operating at the nexus of electrochemistry and electronics., Comment: Fig. 4 now shows film stability up to 400C (replacing earlier 300C data). Nonradiative processes limit optoelectronic functionality of nanocrystals and curb their device performance. Nevertheless, the dynamic structural origins of nonradiative relaxations in nanocrystals are not understood. Here, femtosecond electron diffraction measurements corroborated by atomistic simulations uncover transient lattice deformations accompanying radiationless electronic processes in semiconductor nanocrystals. Investigation of the excitation energy dependence shows that hot carriers created by a photon energy considerably larger than the bandgap induce structural distortions at nanocrystal surfaces on few picosecond timescales associated with the localization of trapped holes. On the other hand, carriers created by a photon energy close to the bandgap result in transient lattice heating that occurs on a much longer 200 ps timescale, governed by an Auger heating mechanism. Elucidation of the structural deformations associated with the surface trapping of hot holes provides atomic-scale insights into the mechanisms deteriorating optoelectronic performance and a pathway towards minimizing these losses in nanocrystal devices., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Metal contacts are a key limiter to the electronic performance of two-dimensional (2D) semiconductor devices. Here we present a comprehensive study of contact interfaces between seven metals (Y, Sc, Ag, Al, Ti, Au, Ni, with work functions from 3.1 to 5.2 eV) and monolayer MoS2 grown by chemical vapor deposition. We evaporate thin metal films onto MoS2 and study the interfaces by Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and electrical characterization. We uncover that, 1) ultrathin oxidized Al dopes MoS2 n-type (> 2x10^12 1/cm^2) without degrading its mobility, 2) Ag, Au, and Ni deposition causes varying levels of damage to MoS2 (broadening Raman E' peak from <3 1/cm to >6 1/cm), and 3) Ti, Sc, and Y react with MoS2. Reactive metals must be avoided in contacts to monolayer MoS2, but control studies reveal the reaction is mostly limited to the top layer of multilayer films. Finally, we find that 4) thin metals do not significantly strain MoS2, as confirmed by X-ray diffraction. These are important findings for metal contacts to MoS2, and broadly applicable to many other 2D semiconductors.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exist in various crystal structures with semiconducting, semi-metallic, and metallic properties. The dynamic control of these phases is of immediate interest for next generation electronics such as phase change memories. Of the binary Mo and W-based TMDs, MoTe2 is attractive for electronic applications because it has the lowest energy difference (40 meV) between the semiconducting (2H) and semi-metallic (1T') phases, allowing for MoTe2 phase change by electrostatic doping. Here we report phase change between the 2H and 1T' polymorphs of MoTe2 in thicknesses ranging from the monolayer case to effective bulk (73nm) using an ionic liquid electrolyte at room temperature and in air. We find consistent evidence of a partially reversible 2H-1T' transition using in-situ Raman spectroscopy where the phase change occurs in the top-most layers of the MoTe2 flake. We find a thickness-dependent transition voltage where higher voltages are necessary to drive the phase change for thicker flakes. We also show evidence of electrochemical activity during the gating process by observation of Te metal deposition. This finding suggests the formation of Te vacancies which have been reported to lower the energy difference between the 2H and 1T' phase, potentially aiding the phase change process. Our discovery that the phase change can be achieved on the surface layer of bulk materials reveals that this electrochemical mechanism does not require isolation of a single layer and the effect may be more broadly applicable than previously thought., Comment: Paper is 15 pages with 7 figures. Halide perovskites have indisputably exceptional optical and electronic properties, which are attractive for next-generation optoelectronic device technologies. We report on a reversible photoluminescence (PL) peak in iodide-based organic-inorganic lead halide perovskite materials under a two-photon absorption (TPA) process, while tuning the excitation wavelength. This phenomenon occurs when the incoming femtosecond (fs) laser photon energy is higher than a threshold energy. Intriguingly, this phenomenon also occurs in other kinds of iodide perovskite materials. Moreover, two more shorter wavelength peaks exhibit and become prominent when the excitation photon energy is being tuned in the high energy wavelength spectrum, while laser power is remained constant. However, the spectral PL energy window between the original material peak and the first high energy peak can vary based on the optoelectronic properties of the prepared films. The same phenomenon of reversible PL peak is also observed in various iodide based organic-inorganic halides as well as all-inorganic perovskite single crystals and polycrystals. We attribute to the reversible PL peak to the photoinduced structural deformation and the associated change in optical bandgap of iodide perovskites under the femtosecond laser excitation. The optoelectronic properties of macromolecular semiconductors depend fundamentally on their solid-state microstructure. For example, the molecular-weight distribution influences polymeric- semiconductor properties via diverse microstructures; polymers of low weight-average molecular weight (Mw) form unconnected, extended-chain crystals, usually of a paraffinic structure. Because of the non-entangled nature of the relatively short-chain macromolecules, this leads to a polycrystalline, one-phase morphology. In contrast, with high-Mw materials, where average chain lengths are longer than the length between entanglements, two-phase morphologies, comprised of crystalline moieties embedded in largely unordered (amorphous) regions, are obtained. We investigate charge photogeneration processes in neat regioregular poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) of varying Mw by means of time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. At 10 K, PL originating from recombination of long-lived charge pairs decays over microsecond timescales. Both the amplitude and decay rate distribution depend strongly on Mw. In films with dominant one-phase chain-extended microstructures, the delayed PL is suppressed as a result of a diminished yield of photoinduced charges, and its decay is significantly faster than in two-phase microstructures. However, independent of Mw, charge recombination regenerates singlet excitons in torsionally disordered chains forming more strongly coupled photophysical aggregates than those in the steady-state ensemble, with delayed PL lineshape reminiscent of that in paraffinic morphologies at steady state. We conclude that highly delocalized excitons in disordered regions between crystalline and amorphous phases dissociate extrinsically with yield and spatial distribution that depend intimately upon microstructure., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

We have developed and applied a mobility edge model that takes into account drift and diffusion currents to characterize the space charge limited current in organic semiconductors. The numerical solution of the drift-diffusion equation allows the utilization of asymmetric contacts to describe the built-in potential within the device. The model has been applied to extract information of the distribution of traps from experimental current-voltage measurements of a rubrene single crystal from Krellner et al. [Phys. Rev. B, 75(24), 245115] showing excellent agreement across several orders of magnitude of current. Although the two contacts are made of the same metal, an energy offset of 580 meV between them, ascribed to differences in the deposition techniques (lamination vs. evaporation) was essential to correctly interpret the shape of the current-voltage characteristics at low voltage. A band mobility 0.13 cm2/Vs for holes was estimated, which is consistent with transport along the long axis of the orthorhombic unit cell. The total density of traps deeper than 0.1 eV was 2.2\times1016 cm-3. The sensitivity analysis and error estimation in the obtained parameters shows that it is not possible to accurately resolve the shape of the trap distribution for energies deeper than 0.3 eV or shallower than 0.1 eV above the valence band edge. The total number of traps deeper than 0.3 eV however can be estimated. Contact asymmetry and the diffusion component of the current play an important role in the description of the device at low bias, and are required to obtain reliable information about the distribution of deep traps.

We quantify the degree of disorder in the {\pi}-{\pi} stacking direction of crystallites of a high performing semicrystalline semiconducting polymer with advanced X-ray lineshape analysis. Using first principles calculations, we obtain the density of states of a system of {\pi}-{\pi} stacked polymer chains with increasing amounts of paracrystalline disorder. We find that for an aligned film of PBTTT the paracrystalline disorder is 7.3%. This type of disorder induces a tail of trap states with a breadth of ~100 meV as determined through calculation. This finding agrees with previous device modeling and provides physical justification for the mobility edge model., Comment: Text and figures are unchanged in the new version of the file.
