Background: Type I X-Ray bursts (XRBs) are energetic stellar explosions that occur on the surface of a neutron star in an accreting binary system with a low-mass H/He-rich companion. The rate of the $^{34}$Ar($\alpha,p$)$^{37}$K reaction may influence features of the light curve that results from the underlying thermonuclear runaway, as shown in recent XRB stellar modelling studies. Purpose: In order to reduce the uncertainty of the rate of this reaction, properties of resonances in the compound nucleus $^{38}$Ca, such as resonance energies, spins, and particle widths, must be well constrained. Method: This work discusses a study of resonances in the $^{38}$Ca compound nucleus produced in the $^{34}$Ar($\alpha,p$) reaction. The experiment was performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory, with the ReA3 facility by measuring proton scattering using an unstable $^{37}$K beam. The kinematics were designed specifically to identify and characterize resonances in the Gamow energy window for the temperature regime relevant to XRBs. Results: The spins and proton widths of newly identified and previously known states in $^{38}$Ca in the energy region of interest for the $^{34}$Ar($\alpha,p$)$^{37}$K reaction have been constrained through an R-Matrix analysis of the scattering data. Conclusions: Using these constraints, a newly estimated rate is applied to an XRB model built using Modules for Experiments in Stellar Astrophysics (MESA), to examine its impact on observables, including the light curve. It is found that the newly determined reaction rate does not substantially affect the features of the light curve.

Studies aiming to determine the astrophysical origins of nuclei produced by the rapid neutron capture process ($r$ process) rely on nuclear properties as inputs for simulations. The solar abundances can be used as a benchmark for such calculations, with the $r$-process rare-earth peak (REP) around mass number ($A$) 164 being of special interest due to its presently unknown origin. With the advancement of rare isotope beam production over the last decade and improvement in experimental sensitivities, many of these REP nuclides have become accessible for measurement. Masses are one of the most critical inputs as they impact multiple nuclear properties, namely the neutron-separation energies, neutron capture rates, $\beta$-decay rates, and $\beta$-delayed neutron emission probabilities. In this work, we report masses of 20 neutron-rich nuclides (along the Ba, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Gd, Dy and Ho isotopic chains) produced at the CAlifornium Rare Isotope Breeder Upgrade (CARIBU) facility at Argonne National Laboratory. The masses were measured with the Canadian Penning trap (CPT) mass spectrometer using the Phase-Imaging Ion-Cyclotron-Resonance (PI-ICR) technique. We then use these new masses along with previously published CPT masses to inform predictions for a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedure aiming to identify the astrophysical conditions consistent with both solar data and mass measurements. We show that the MCMC responds to this updated mass information, producing refined results for both mass predictions and REP abundances., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures

About half of the heavy elements beyond iron are known to be produced by the rapid neutron capture process, known as r-process. However, the astrophysical site producing the r-process is still uncertain. Chemical abundances observed in several cosmic sites indicate that different mechanisms should be at play. For instance, the abundances around silver measured in a subset of metal-poor stars indicate the presence of a weak r-process. This process may be active in neutrino-driven winds of core collapse supernovae where (${\alpha}$,n) reactions dominate the synthesis of Z ~ 40 elements in the expelled materials. Scarcely measured, the rates of (${\alpha}$,n) reactions are determined from statistical Hauser-Feshbach calculations with ${\alpha}$-optical-model potentials, which are still poorly constrained. The uncertainties of the (${\alpha}$,n) reaction rates therefore make a significant contribution to the uncertainties of the abundances determined from stellar modeling. In this work, the $^{88}$Sr(${\alpha}$,n)$^{91}$Zr reaction which impacts the weak r-process abundances has been probed at astrophysics energy for the first time; directly measuring the total cross sections at astrophysical energies of 8.37 - 13.09 MeV in the center of mass (3.8 - 7.5 GK). Two measurements were performed at ATLAS with the electrically-segmented ionization chamber MUSIC, in inverse kinematics, while following the active target technique. The cross sections of this ${\alpha}$-induced reaction on $^{88}$Sr, located at the shell closure N = 50, have been found to be lower than expected, by a factor of 3, despite recent statistical calculations validated by measurements on neighboring nuclei. This result encourages more experimental investigations of (${\alpha}$,n) reactions, at N = 50 and towards the neutron-rich side, to further test the predictive power and reliability of such calculations., Comment: 9 pages, 6 conference

The $^{22}$Mg($\alpha$,$p$)$^{25}$Al reaction rate has been identified as a major source of uncertainty for understanding the nucleosynthesis flow in Type-I x-ray bursts (XRBs). We report a direct measurement of the energy- and angle-integrated cross sections of this reaction in a 3.3-6.9 MeV center-of-mass energy range using the MUlti-Sampling Ionization Chamber (MUSIC). The new $^{22}$Mg($\alpha$,$p$)$^{25}$Al reaction rate is a factor of $\sim$4 higher than the previous direct measurement of this reaction within temperatures relevant for XRBs, resulting in the $^{22}$Mg waiting point of x-ray burst nucleosynthesis flow to be significantly bypassed via the ($\alpha,p$) reaction, Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures, 1 table

Deuteron elastic scattering from 15C and inelastic scattering reactions to the first excited state of 15C were studied using a radioactive beam of 15C in inverse kinematics. The scattered deuterons were measured using HELIOS. The elastic scattering differential cross sections were analyzed using the optical model. A matter deformation length {\delta}d = 1.04(11) fm has been extracted from the differential cross sections of inelastic scattering to the first excited state. The ratio of neutron and proton matrix elements Mn/Mp = 3.6(4) has been determined from this quadrupole transition. Neutron effective charges and core-polarization parameters of 15C were determined and discussed. Results from ab-initio no-core configuration interaction calculations were also compared with the experimental observations. This result supports a moderate core decoupling effect of the valence neutron in 15C similarly to its isotone 17O, in line with the interpretation of other neutron-rich carbon isotopes.

Understanding the explosion mechanism of a core-collapse supernova (CCSN) is important to accurately model CCSN scenarios for different progenitor stars using model-observation comparisons. The uncertainties of various nuclear reaction rates relevant for CCSN scenarios strongly affect the accuracy of these stellar models. Out of these reactions, the $^{13}$N($\alpha$,$p$)$^{16}$O reaction has been found to affect various stages of a CCSN at varying temperatures. This work presents the first direct measurement of the $^{13}$N($\alpha$,$p$)$^{16}$O reaction performed using a 34.6 MeV beam of radioactive $^{13}$N ions and the active-target detector MUSIC (MUlti-Sampling Ionization Chamber) at Argonne National Laboratory. The resulting total $^{13}$N($\alpha$,$p$)$^{16}$O reaction cross sections from this measurement in the center-of-mass energy range of 3.26 - 6.02 MeV are presented and compared with calculations using the Hauser-Feshbach formalism. The isomeric state of $^{16}$N was studied using the $^{16}$N$^{g,m}$($d$,$^3$He)~proton-removal reactions at \mbox{11.8~MeV/$u$} in inverse kinematics. The $^{16}$N beam, of which 24% was in the isomeric state, was produced using the ATLAS in-fight facility and delivered to the HELIOS spectrometer, which was used to analyze the $^{3}$He ions from the ($d$,$^{3}$He) reactions. The simultaneous measurement of reactions on both the ground and isomeric states, reduced the systematic uncertainties from the experiment and in the analysis. A direct and reliable comparison of the relative spectroscopic factors was made based on a Distorted-Wave Born Approximation approach. The experimental results suggest that the isomeric state of $^{16}$N is an excited neutron-halo state. The results can be understood through calculations using a Woods-Saxon potential model, which captures the effects of weak-binding., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figurs

The level density of quantum states in statistical mesoscopic systems is a critical input for various fields of physics, including nuclear physics, nuclear astrophysics, atomic physics and their applications. In atomic nuclei, the level density is a fundamental measure of their complex structure at relatively high energies. Here we present the first model-independent measurement of the absolute partial nuclear level density for a short-lived unstable nucleus. For this purpose, we introduce the ``Shape method'' to extract the shape of the $\gamma$-ray strength function. Combining the Shape method with the existing $\beta$-Oslo technique allows the extraction of the nuclear level density without the need for theoretical input. We benchmark the Shape method using results for the stable $^{76}$Ge nucleus, finding an excellent agreement to previous experimental results. We apply the Shape method to new experimental data on the short-lived $^{88}$Kr nucleus. Our method opens the door for measurements of the nuclear level density and $\gamma$-ray strength function far away from stability, a pivotal input required to understand the role of exotic nuclei in forming the cosmos.

The $^{15}$O($\alpha$,$\gamma$)$^{19}$Ne reaction is responsible for breakout from the hot CNO cycle in Type I x-ray bursts. Understanding the properties of resonances between $E_x = 4$ and 5 MeV in $^{19}$Ne is crucial in the calculation of this reaction rate. The spins and parities of these states are well known, with the exception of the 4.14- and 4.20-MeV states, which have adopted spin-parities of 9/2$^-$ and 7/2$^-$, respectively. Gamma-ray transitions from these states were studied using triton-$\gamma$-$\gamma$ coincidences from the $^{19}$F($^{3}$He,$t\gamma$)$^{19}$Ne reaction measured with GODDESS (Gammasphere ORRUBA Dual Detectors for Experimental Structure Studies) at Argonne National Laboratory. The observed transitions from the 4.14- and 4.20-MeV states provide strong evidence that the $J^\pi$ values are actually 7/2$^-$ and 9/2$^-$, respectively. These assignments are consistent with the values in the $^{19}$F mirror nucleus and in contrast to previously accepted assignments.

Detection of nuclear-decay $\gamma$ rays provides a sensitive thermometer of nova nucleosynthesis. The most intense $\gamma$-ray flux is thought to be annihilation radiation from the $\beta^+$ decay of $^{18}$F, which is destroyed prior to decay by the $^{18}$F($p$,$\alpha$)$^{15}$O reaction. Estimates of $^{18}$F production had been uncertain, however, because key near-threshold levels in the compound nucleus, $^{19}$Ne, had yet to be identified. This Letter reports the first measurement of the $^{19}$F($^{3}$He,$t\gamma$)$^{19}$Ne reaction, in which the placement of two long-sought 3/2$^+$ levels is suggested via triton-$\gamma$-$\gamma$ coincidences. The precise determination of their resonance energies reduces the upper limit of the rate by a factor of $1.5-17$ at nova temperatures and reduces the average uncertainty on the nova detection probability by a factor of 2.1., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The $^{36}$Ar$(n,\gamma)^{37}$Ar ($t_{1/2}$ = 35 d) and $^{38}$Ar$(n,\gamma)^{39}$Ar (269 y) reactions were studied for the first time with a quasi-Maxwellian ($kT \sim 47$ keV) neutron flux for Maxwellian Average Cross Section (MACS) measurements at stellar energies. Gas samples were irradiated at the high-intensity Soreq applied research accelerator facility-liquid-lithium target neutron source and the $^{37}$Ar/$^{36}$Ar and $^{39}$Ar/$^{38}$Ar ratios in the activated samples were determined by accelerator mass spectrometry at the ATLAS facility (Argonne National Laboratory). The $^{37}$Ar activity was also measured by low-level counting at the University of Bern. Experimental MACS of $^{36}$Ar and $^{38}$Ar, corrected to the standard 30 keV thermal energy, are 1.9(3) mb and 1.3(2) mb, respectively, differing from the theoretical and evaluated values published to date by up to an order of magnitude. The neutron capture cross sections of $^{36,38}$Ar are relevant to the stellar nucleosynthesis of light neutron-rich nuclides; the two experimental values are shown to affect the calculated mass fraction of nuclides in the region A=36-48 during the weak $s$-process. The new production cross sections have implications also for the use of $^{37}$Ar and $^{39}$Ar as environmental tracers in the atmosphere and hydrosphere., Comment: 18 pages + Supp. Mat. A beam containing a substantial component of both the $J^{\pi}=5^+$, $T_{1/2}=162$ ns isomeric state of $^{18}$F and its $1^+$, 109.77-min ground state has been utilized to study members of the ground-state rotational band in $^{19}$F through the neutron transfer reaction $(d$,$p)$ in inverse kinematics. The resulting spectroscopic strengths confirm the single-particle nature of the 13/2$^+$ band-terminating state. The agreement between shell-model calculations, using an interaction constructed within the $sd$ shell, and our experimental results reinforces the idea of a single-particle/collective duality in the descriptions of the structure of atomic nuclei.

The $^{23}$Na$(\alpha,p)^{26}$Mg and $^{23}$Na$(\alpha,n)^{26}$Al reactions are important for our understanding of the $^{26}$Al abundance in massive stars. The aim of this work is to report on a direct and simultaneous measurement of these astrophysically important reactions using an active target system. The reactions were investigated in inverse kinematics using $^{4}$He as the active target gas in the detector. We measured the excitation functions in the energy range of about 2 to 6 MeV in the center of mass. We have found that the cross sections of the $^{23}$Na$(\alpha,p)^{26}$Mg and the $^{23}$Na$(\alpha,n)^{26}$Al reactions are in good agreement with previous experiments, and with statistical model calculations.

A large number of $(\alpha,p)$ and $(\alpha,n)$ reactions are known to play a fundamental role in nuclear astrophysics. This work presents a novel technique to study these reactions with the active target system MUSIC whose segmented anode allows the investigation of a large energy range of the excitation function with a single beam energy. In order to verify the method, we performed a direct measurements of the previously measured reactions $^{17}$O$(\alpha,n)^{20}$Ne, $^{23}$Na$(\alpha,p)^{26}$Mg, and $^{23}$Na$(\alpha,n)^{26}$Al. These reactions were investigated in inverse kinematics using $^{4}$He gas in the detector to study the excitation function in the range of about 2 to 6 MeV in the center of mass. We found good agreement between the cross sections of the $^{17}$O$(\alpha,n)^{20}$Ne reaction measured in this work and previous measurements. Furthermore we have successfully performed a simultaneous measurement of the $^{23}$Na$(\alpha,p)^{26}$Mg and $^{23}$Na$(\alpha,n)^{26}$Al reactions.

Using an array of high-purity Compton-suppressed germanium detectors, we performed an independent measurement of the $\beta$-decay branching ratio from $^{12}\mathrm{B}$ to the second-excited (Hoyle) state in $^{12}\mathrm{C}$. Our result is $0.64(11)\%$, which is a factor $\sim 2$ smaller than the previously established literature value, but is in agreement with another recent measurement. This could indicate that the Hoyle state is more clustered than previously believed. The angular correlation of the Hoyle state $\gamma$ cascade has also been measured for the first time. It is consistent with theoretical predictions.

Background: Accurate knowledge of the $^{13}$C($\alpha$,$n$)$^{16}$O reaction cross section is important for the understanding of the s-process in AGB stars, since it is considered to be the main source of neutrons. The sub-threshold 1/2$^+$ state at excitation energy of 6.356 MeV in $^{17}$O has a strong influence on the reaction cross section at energies relevant for astrophysics. Several experiments have been performed to determine the contribution of this state to the $^{13}$C($\alpha,n)^{16}$O reaction rate. Nevertheless, significant discrepancies between different measurements remain. Purpose: The aim of this work is to investigate these discrepancies. Method: An 8 MeV $^{13}$C beam (below the Coulomb barrier) was used to study the $\alpha$-transfer reaction $^6$Li($^{13}$C,$d$)$^{17}$O. Results: The squared Coulomb modified ANC of the 1/2$^+$ state in $^{17}$O measured in this work is $(\tilde C^{^{17}\text{O}(1/2+)}_{\alpha-^{13}\text{C}})^2=3.6\pm0.7\hspace{0.2cm}\text{fm}^{-1}$. Conclusions: Discrepancy between the results of $\alpha$-transfer experiments have been resolved. However, some discrepancy with the most recent measurement using the Trojan Horse method remains.

Background. The $^{12}$C$(\alpha,\gamma)^{16}$O reaction plays a fundamental role in astrophysics and needs to be known with accuracy better than 10%. Cascade $\gamma$ transitions through the excited states of $^{16}$O are contributing to the uncertainty. Purpose. To constrain the contribution of the 0$^+$ (6.05 MeV) and 3$^-$ (6.13 MeV) cascade transitions. Method. The $\alpha$ Asymptotic Normalization Coefficient for these states were measured using the $\alpha$-transfer reaction $^{12}$C$(^6$Li,$d)^{16}$O at sub-Coulomb energies. Results. The 0$^+$ and 3$^-$ cascade transitions contribution was found to be 1.96$\pm$0.3 keV b and 0.12$\pm$0.04 keV b for destructive interference of the direct and resonance capture and 4.36$\pm$0.45 keV b and 1.44$\pm$0.12 keV b for constructive interference respectively. Conclusions. The combined contribution of the 0$^+$ and 3$^-$ cascade transitions to the reaction at 300 keV does not exceed 4%. Significant uncertainties have been dramatically reduced.

Background. Many important $\alpha$-particle induced reactions for nuclear astrophysics may only be measured using indirect techniques due to small cross sections at the energy of interest. One of such indirect technique, is to determine the Asymptotic Normalization Coefficients (ANC) for near threshold resonances extracted from sub-Coulomb $\alpha$-transfer reactions. This approach provides a very valuable tool for studies of astrophysically important reaction rates since the results are practically model independent. However, the validity of the method has not been directly verified. Purpose. The aim of this letter is to verify the technique using the $^{16}$O($^6$Li,$d$)$^{20}$Ne reaction as a benchmark. The $^{20}$Ne nucleus has a well known $1^-$ state at excitation energy of 5.79 MeV with a width of 28 eV. Reproducing the known value with this technique is an ideal opportunity to verify the method. Method. The 1$^-$ state at 5.79 MeV is studied using the $\alpha$-transfer reaction $^{16}$O($^6$Li,$d$)$^{20}$Ne at sub-Coulomb energies. Results. The partial $\alpha$ width for the $1^-$ state at excitation energy of 5.79 MeV is extracted and compared with the known value, allowing the accuracy of the method to be evaluated. Conclusions. This study demonstrates that extracting the Asymptotic Normalization Coefficients using sub-Coulomb $\alpha$-transfer reactions is a powerful tool that can be used to determine the partial $\alpha$ width of near threshold states that may dominate astrophysically important nuclear reaction rates. \end{description}
