We report spectroscopic confirmations of 15 Lyα galaxies at z ∼ 7, implying a spectroscopic confirmation rate of ∼80% on candidates selected from the Lyα Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization (LAGER), which is the largest (24 deg2) survey aimed at finding Lyα emitters (LAEs) at z ∼ 7 and uses deep narrowband imaging from the Dark Energy Camera at CTIO. LAEs at high redshifts are sensitive probes of cosmic reionization, and narrowband imaging is a robust and effective method for selecting a large number of LAEs. In this work, we present results from the spectroscopic follow-up of LAE candidates in two LAGER fields, COSMOS and WIDE-12, using observations from Keck/LRIS. We report the successful detection of Lyα emission in 15 candidates. Three of these in COSMOS have matching confirmations from a previous spectroscopic follow-up and are part of the overdense region, LAGER-z7OD1. Two other candidates that were not detected with LRIS have prior spectroscopic confirmations from Magellan. Including these, we obtain a spectroscopic confirmation success rate of ∼80% for LAGER LAE candidates. Thorough checks were performed to reject the possibility of these detections being foreground emission resulting with a probability of, at most, one contaminant. We do not detect any other UV nebular lines in our LRIS spectra, apart from Lyα. We estimate a 2σ upper limit for the ratio of N v/Lyα, fNV/fLyα ≲ 0.27. Including confirmations from this work, a total of 33 LAE sources from LAGER are now spectroscopically confirmed. LAGER has more than doubled the sample of spectroscopically confirmed LAE sources at z ∼ 7.

We present a catalog of 208 0.3 < z < 2.1 emission-line galaxies (ELGs) selected from 1D slitless spectroscopy obtained using Hubble's WFC3 G102 grism, as part of the Faint Infrared Grism Survey. We identify ELG candidates by searching for significant peaks in all continuum-subtracted G102 spectra and, where possible, confirm candidates by identifying consistent emission lines in other available spectra or with published spectroscopic redshifts. We provide derived emission-line fluxes and errors, redshifts, and equivalent widths for Hα λ6563, [O iii] λλ4959, 5007, and [O ii] λ3727 emission lines, for ELGs down to AB(F105W) >28 and >10^(−17) erg/ sq. cms line flux. We use the resulting line catalog to investigate a possible relationship between line emission and a galaxy's environment. We use seventh-nearest-neighbor distances to investigate the typical surroundings of ELGs compared to non-ELGs, and we find that [O iii] emitters are preferentially found at intermediate galaxy densities near galaxy groups. We characterize these ELGs in terms of the galaxy specific star formation rate (SFR) versus stellar mass and find no significant influence of environment on that relation. We calculate SFRs and find no dependence of SFR on local galaxy surface density for 0.3 < z < 0.8 Hα emitters and for 0.8 < z < 1.3 [O iii] emitters. We find similar rates of close-pair interaction between ELGs and non-ELGs. For galaxy surface densities Σ ≤ 30 Mp/sq.c, we find no consistent effect of environment on star formation.

We present the largest-ever sample of 79 Lyα emitters (LAEs) at z ~ 7.0 selected in the COSMOS and CDFS fields of the LAGER project (the Lyman Alpha Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization). Our newly amassed ultradeep narrowband exposure and deeper/wider broadband images have more than doubled the number of LAEs in COSMOS, and we have selected 30 LAEs in the second field CDFS. We detect two large-scale LAE-overdense regions in the COSMOS that are likely protoclusters at the highest redshift to date. We perform injection and recovery simulations to derive the sample incompleteness. We show that significant incompleteness comes from blending with foreground sources, which, however, has not been corrected in LAE luminosity functions (LFs) in the literature. The bright-end bump in the Lyα LF in COSMOS is confirmed with six (two newly selected) luminous LAEs (LLyα > 1043.3 erg s−1). Interestingly, the bump is absent in CDFS, in which only one luminous LAE is detected. Meanwhile, the faint-end LFs from the two fields agree well with each other. The six luminous LAEs in COSMOS coincide with two LAE-overdense regions, while such regions are not seen in CDFS. The bright-end LF bump could be attributed to ionized bubbles in a patchy reionization. It appears associated with cosmic overdensities and thus supports an inside-out reionization topology at z ~ 7.0, i.e., the high-density peaks were ionized earlier compared to the voids. An average neutral hydrogen fraction of xH I ~ 0.2–0.4 is derived at z ~ 7.0 based on the cosmic evolution of the Lyα LF.
