We study theoretically the temporal evolution and the spatial structure of the interface between two polymer melts involving three different species (A, A* and B). The first melt is composed of two different polymer species A and A* which are fairly indifferent to one another (Flory parameter chi_AA* ~ 0). The second melt is made of a pure polymer B which is strongly attracted to species A (chi_AB < 0) but strongly repelled by species A* (chi_A*B > 0). We then show that, due to these contradictory tendencies, interesting properties arise during the evolution of the interface after the melts are put into contact: as diffusion proceeds, the interface structures into several adjacent "compartments", or layers, of differing chemical compositions, and in addition, the central mixing layer grows in a very asymmetric fashion. Such unusual behaviour might lead to interesting mechanical properties, and demonstrates on a specific case the potential richness of multi-component polymer interfaces (as compared to conventional two-component interfaces) for various applications., Comment: Revised version, to appear in Macromolecules

In this paper, we present a qualitative analysis of the dissipative processes during the failure of the interface between a viscoelastic polymer and a solid surface. We reassess the "viscoelastic trumpet" model [P.-G. de Gennes, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris, 307, 1949 (1988)], and show that, for a crosslinked polymer, the interface toughness G(V) starts from a relatively low value, G_0, due to local processes near the fracture tip, and rises up to a maximum of order $G_0 (\mu_{\infty}/\mu_0)$ (where $\mu_0$ and $\mu_{\infty}$ stand for the elastic modulus of the material, respectively at low and high strain frequencies). This enhancement of fracture energy is due to far-field viscous dissipation in the bulk material, and begins for peel-rates V much lower than previously thought. For a polymer melt, the adhesion energy is predicted to scale as 1/V. In the second part of this paper, we compare some of our theoretical predictions with experimental results about the viscoelastic adhesion between a polydimethylsiloxane polymer melt and a glass surface. In particular, the expected dependence of the fracture energy versus separation rate is confirmed by the experimental data, and the observed changes in the concavity of the crack profile are in good agreement with our simple model., Comment: Revised version to appear in Macromolecules

In this paper we present a theoretical model for the dewetting of ultra-thin polymer films. Assumming that the shear-thinning properties of these films can be described by a Cross-type constitutive equation, we analyze the front morphology of the dewetting film, and characterize the time evolution of the dry region radius, and of the rim height. Different regimes of growth are expected, depending on the initial film thickness, and on the power-law index involved in the constitutive equation. In the thin-films regime, the dry radius and the rim height obey power-law time dependences. We then compare our predictions with the experimental results obtained by Debr\'egeas {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 75}, 3886 (1995)] and by Reiter [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 87}, 186101 (2001)]., Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures

Dewetting of ultra-thin polymer films near the glass transition exhibits unexpected front morphologies [G. Reiter, Phys. Rev. Lett., 87, 186101 (2001)]. We present here the first theoretical attempt to understand these features, focusing on the shear-thinning behaviour of these films. We analyse the profile of the dewetting film, and characterize the time evolution of the dry region radius, $R_{d}(t)$, and of the rim height, $h_{m}(t)$. After a transient time depending on the initial thickness, $h_{m}(t)$ grows like $\sqrt{t}$ while $R_{d}(t)$ increases like $\exp{(\sqrt{t})}$.
