In an effective-field-theory approach, the rate for $\mu\to e$ conversion in nuclei depends on a set of effective operators mediating the lepton-flavor-violating interaction at a high scale, renormalization group corrections that describe the evolution to lower scales, and hadronic and nuclear matrix elements that turn quark-level interactions into hadronic ones and then embed the latter into nuclear responses. In particular, combining information from $\mu\to e\gamma$, $\mu\to 3e$, and $\mu\to e $ conversion in nuclei, it becomes possible to disentangle different underlying sources of lepton flavor violation. However, to assess the discriminatory power it is critical that uncertainties at each step of the analysis be controlled and fully quantified. In this regard, nuclear response functions related to the coupling to neutrons are notoriously problematic, since they are not directly constrained by experiment. We address these shortcomings by combining ab initio calculations with a recently improved determination of charge distributions from electron scattering by exploiting strong correlations among charge, point-proton, and point-neutron radii and densities. Understanding the interactions between nucleons in dense matter is one of the outstanding challenges of theoretical physics. Effective field theories have emerged as the dominant approach to address this problem at low energies, with many successful applications to the structure of nuclei and the properties of dense nucleonic matter. However, how far into the interior of neutron stars these interactions can describe dense matter is an open question. Here, we develop a framework that enables the inference of three-nucleon couplings in dense matter directly from astrophysical neutron-star observations. We apply this formalism to the LIGO/Virgo gravitational-wave event GW170817 and the X-ray measurements from NASA's Neutron-Star Interior Composition Explorer and establish direct constraints for the couplings that govern three-nucleon interactions in chiral effective field theory. Furthermore, we demonstrate how next-generation observations of a population of neutron-star mergers can offer stringent constraints on three-nucleon couplings, potentially at a level comparable to those from laboratory data. Pulse profile modeling of X-ray data from NICER is now enabling precision inference of neutron star mass and radius. Combined with nuclear physics constraints from chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT), and masses and tidal deformabilities inferred from gravitational wave detections of binary neutron star mergers, this has lead to a steady improvement in our understanding of the dense matter equation of state (EOS). Here we consider the impact of several new results: the radius measurement for the 1.42$\,M_\odot$ pulsar PSR J0437$-$4715 presented by Choudhury et al. (2024), updates to the masses and radii of PSR J0740$+$6620 and PSR J0030$+$0451, and new $\chi$EFT results for neutron star matter up to 1.5 times nuclear saturation density. Using two different high-density EOS extensions -- a piecewise-polytropic (PP) model and a model based on the speed of sound in a neutron star (CS) -- we find the radius of a 1.4$\,M_\odot$ (2.0$\,M_\odot$) neutron star to be constrained to the 95% credible ranges $12.28^{+0.50}_{-0.76}\,$km ($12.33^{+0.70}_{-1.34}\,$km) for the PP model and $12.01^{+0.56}_{-0.75}\,$km ($11.55^{+0.94}_{-1.09}\,$km) for the CS model. The maximum neutron star mass is predicted to be $2.15^{+0.14}_{-0.16}\,$$M_\odot$ and $2.08^{+0.28}_{-0.16}\,$$M_\odot$ for the PP and CS model, respectively. We explore the sensitivity of our results to different orders and different densities up to which $\chi$EFT is used, and show how the astrophysical observations provide constraints for the pressure at intermediate densities. In this Letter, we present mass-ratio measurements on highly charged Yb$^{42+}$ ions with a precision of $4\times 10^{-12}$ and isotope-shift measurements on Yb$^{+}$ on the $^{2}$S$_{1/2}$ $\to$ $^{2}$D$_{5/2}$ and $^{2}$S$_{1/2}$ $\to$ $^{2}$F$_{7/2}$ transitions with a precision of $4\times 10^{-9}$ for the isotopes $^{168,170,172,174,176}$Yb. We present a new method that allows us to extract higher-order changes in the nuclear charge distribution along the Yb isotope chain, benchmarking ab-initio nuclear structure calculations. Additionally, we perform a King plot analysis to set bounds on a fifth force in the keV$/c^2$ to MeV$/c^2$ range coupling to electrons and neutrons.

The dynamics in mergers of binary neutron star (BNS) systems depend sensitively on the equation of state (EOS) of dense matter. This has profound implications on the emission of gravitational waves (GWs) and the ejection of matter in the merger and post-merger phases and is thus of high interest for multi-messenger astronomy. Today, a variety of nuclear EOSs are available with various underlying microphysical models. This calls for a study to focus on EOS effects from different physical nuclear matter properties and their influence on BNS mergers. We perform simulations of equal-mass BNS mergers with a set of 9 different EOSs based on Skyrme density functionals. In the models, we systematically vary the effective nucleon mass, incompressibility, and symmetry energy at saturation density. This allows us to investigate the influence of specific nuclear matter properties on the dynamics of BNS mergers. We analyze the impact of these properties on the merger dynamics, the fate of the remnant, disk formation, ejection of matter, and gravitational wave emission. Our results indicate that some aspects of the merger are sensitive to the EOS around saturation density while others are sensitive to the behavior towards higher densities, e.g., characterized by the slope of the pressure as a function of density. We investigate the nuclear symmetry energy and neutron star properties using a Bayesian analysis based on constraints from different chiral effective field theory calculations using new energy density functionals that allow for large variations at high densities. Constraints at high densities are included from observations of GW170817 and from NICER. In particular, we show that both NICER analyses lead to very similar posterior results for the symmetry energy and neutron star properties when folded into our equation-of-state framework. Using the posteriors, we provide results for the symmetry energy and the slope parameter, as well as for the proton fraction, the speed of sound, and the central density in neutron stars. Moreover, we explore correlations of neutron star radii with the pressure and the speed of sound in neutron stars. Our 95\% credibility ranges for the symmetry energy $S_v$, the slope parameter $L$, and the radius of a 1.4$\msun$ neutron star, $R_{1.4}$, are $S_v=(30.6\text{--}33.9)$\,MeV, $L=(43.7\text{--}70.0)$\,MeV, and $R_{1.4}=(11.6\text{--}13.2)$\,km. Our analysis for the proton fraction shows that larger and/or heavier neutron stars are more likely to cool rapidly via the direct Urca process. We present new maximally local two-nucleon interactions derived in $\Delta$-less chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^3$LO), which include all contact and pion-exchange contributions to the nuclear Hamiltonian up to this order. Our interactions are fit to nucleon-nucleon phase shifts using a Bayesian statistical approach, and explore a wide cutoff range from $0.6-0.9$ fm ($\approx 660 - 440$ MeV). These interactions can be straightforwardly employed in quantum Monte Carlo methods, such as the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method. Together with local three-nucleon forces, calculations with these new interactions will provide improved benchmarks for the structure of atomic nuclei and serve as crucial input to analyses of astrophysical phenomena of neutron stars, such as binary neutron-star mergers., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures. The development of emulators for the evaluation of many-body observables has gained increasing attention over the last years. In particular the framework of eigenvector continuation (EC) has been identified as a powerful tool when the Hamiltonian admits for a parametric dependence. By training the emulator on a set of training data the many-body solution for arbitrary parameter values can be robustly predicted in many cases. Furthermore, it can be used to resum perturbative expansions that otherwise diverge. In this work, we apply EC to the pairing Hamiltonian and show that EC-resummed perturbation theory is in qualitative agreement with the exact solution and that EC-based emulators robustly predict the ground-state energy once the training data are chosen appropriately. We study current bounds on strong first-order phase transitions (PTs) along the equation of state (EOS) of dense strongly interacting matter in neutron stars, under the simplifying assumption that on either side of the PT the EOS can be approximated by a simple polytropic form. We construct a large ensemble of possible EOSs of this form, anchor them to chiral effective field theory calculations at nuclear density and perturbative QCD at high densities, and subject them to astrophysical constraints from high-mass pulsars and gravitational-wave observations. Within this setup, we find that a PT permits neutron-star solutions with larger radii, but only if the transition begins below twice nuclear saturation density. We also identify a large parameter space of allowed PTs currently unexplored by numerical-relativity studies. Additionally, we locate a small region of parameter space allowing twin-star solutions, though we find them to only marginally pass the current astrophysical constraints. Finally, we find that sizeable cores of high-density matter beyond the PT may be located in the centers of some stable neutron stars, primarily those with larger masses., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures; version accepted for publication in ApJ. We calculate the nuclear matrix element for the two-neutrino $\beta\beta$ decay of $^{136}$Xe into the first excited $0^+$ state of $^{136}$Ba. We use different many-body methods: the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) framework, the nuclear shell model, the interacting boson model (IBM-2), and an effective field theory (EFT) for $\beta$ and $\beta\beta$ decays. While the QRPA suggests a decay rate at the edge of current experimental limits, the shell model points to a half-life about two orders of magnitude longer. The predictions of the IBM-2 and the EFT lie in between, and the latter provides systematic uncertainties at leading order. An analysis of the running sum of the nuclear matrix element indicates that subtle cancellations between the contributions of intermediate states can explain the different theoretical predictions. We investigate the appearance of resonances in three-body systems using pionless effective field theory at leading order. The Faddeev equation is analytically continued to the unphysical sheet adjacent to the positive real energy axis using a contour rotation. We consider both, the three-boson system and the three-neutron system. For the former, we calculate the trajectory of Borromean three-body Efimov states turning into resonances as they cross the three-body threshold. For the latter, we find no sign of three-body resonances or virtual states at leading order. We study neutrinoless double-beta decay in an effective field theory (EFT) for heavy nuclei, which are treated as a spherical core coupled to additional neutrons and/or protons. Since the low-energy constants of the EFT cannot be fitted to data for this unobserved decay, we follow an alternative strategy to constrain these through a correlation with double Gamow-Teller transitions. This correlation was recently found to hold for shell-model calculations, energy-density functionals, and other nuclear structure models. We therefore first calculate the nuclear matrix elements for double Gamow-Teller transitions in the EFT for heavy nuclei. The combination of the EFT uncertainty with the correlation uncertainty enables predictions of nuclear matrix elements for neutrinoless double-beta decay for a broad range of isotopes with quantified uncertainties. Eigenvector continuation (EC) has recently attracted a lot attention in nuclear structure and reactions as a variational resummation tool for many-body expansions. While previous applications focused on ground-state energies, excited states can be accessed on equal footing. This work is dedicated to a detailed understanding of the emergence of excited states from the eigenvector continuation approach. For numerical applications the one-dimensional quartic anharmonic oscillator is investigated, which represents a strongly non-perturbative quantum system where the use of standard perturbation techniques break down. We discuss how different choices for the construction of the EC manifold affect the quality of the EC resummation and investigate in detail the results from EC for excited states compared to results from a full diagonalization as a function of the basis-space size., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted in Phys. The symmetry energy and its density dependence are pivotal for many nuclear physics and astrophysics applications, as they determine properties ranging from the neutron-skin thickness of nuclei to the crust thickness and the radius of neutron stars. Recently, PREX-II reported a value of $0.283\pm0.071$ fm for the neutron-skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb, $R_{\rm skin}^{^{208}\text{Pb}}$, implying a symmetry-energy slope parameter $L$ of $106\pm37$ MeV, larger than most ranges obtained from microscopic calculations and other nuclear experiments. We use a nonparametric equation of state representation based on Gaussian processes to constrain the symmetry energy $S_0$, $L$, and $R_{\rm skin}^{^{208}\text{Pb}}$ directly from observations of neutron stars with minimal modeling assumptions. The resulting astrophysical constraints from heavy pulsar masses, LIGO/Virgo, and NICER favor smaller values of the neutron skin and $L$, as well as negative symmetry incompressibilities. Combining astrophysical data with chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT) and PREX-II constraints yields $S_0 = 33.0^{+2.0}_{-1.8}$ MeV, $L=53^{+14}_{-15}$ MeV, and $R_{\rm skin}^{^{208}\text{Pb}} = 0.17^{+0.04}_{-0.04}$ fm. We also examine the consistency of several individual $\chi$EFT calculations with astrophysical observations and terrestrial experiments. We consider the problem of extrapolating the perturbation series for the dilute Fermi gas in three dimensions to the unitary limit of infinite scattering length and into the BEC region, using the available strong-coupling information to constrain the extrapolation problem. In this constrained extrapolation problem (CEP) the goal is to find classes of approximants that give well converged results already for low perturbative truncation orders. First, we show that standard Pad\'{e} and Borel methods are too restrictive to give satisfactory results for this CEP. A generalization of Borel extrapolation is given by the so-called Maximum Entropy extrapolation method (MaxEnt). However, we show that MaxEnt requires extensive elaborations to be applicable to the dilute Fermi gas and is thus not practical for the CEP in this case. Instead, we propose order-dependent-mapping extrapolation (ODME) as a simple, practical, and general method for the CEP. We find that the ODME approximants for the ground-state energy of the dilute Fermi gas are robust with respect to changes of the mapping choice and agree with results from quantum Monte Carlo simulations within uncertainties., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures. The cross section for coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CE$\nu$NS) depends on the response of the target nucleus to the external current, in the Standard Model (SM) mediated by the exchange of a $Z$ boson. This is typically subsumed into an object called the weak form factor of the nucleus. Here, we provide results for this form factor calculated using the large-scale nuclear shell model for a wide range of nuclei of relevance for current CE$\nu$NS experiments, including cesium, iodine, argon, fluorine, sodium, germanium, and xenon. In addition, we provide the responses needed to capture the axial-vector part of the cross section, which does not scale coherently with the number of neutrons, but may become relevant for the SM prediction of CE$\nu$NS on target nuclei with nonzero spin. We then generalize the formalism allowing for contributions beyond the SM. In particular, we stress that in this case, even for vector and axial-vector operators, the standard weak form factor does not apply anymore, but needs to be replaced by the appropriate combination of the underlying nuclear structure factors. We provide the corresponding expressions for vector, axial-vector, but also (pseudo-)scalar, tensor, and dipole effective operators, including two-body-current effects as predicted from chiral effective field theory. The strength of the $N$ = 28 magic number in neutron-rich argon isotopes is examined through high-precision mass measurements of $^{46-48}$Ar, performed with the ISOLTRAP mass spectrometer at ISOLDE/CERN. The new mass values are up to 90 times more precise than previous measurements. While they suggest the persistence of the $N$ = 28 shell closure for argon, we show that this conclusion has to be nuanced in light of the wealth of spectroscopic data and theoretical investigations performed with the \emph{SDPF-U} phenomenological shell model interaction. Our results are also compared with \emph{ab initio} calculations using the Valence Space In-Medium Similarity Renormalization Group and the Self-Consistent Green's Function approaches. Both calculations provide a very good account of mass systematics at and around $Z$ = 18 and, generally, a consistent description of the physics in this region. This combined analysis indicates that $^{46}$Ar is the transition between the closed-shell $^{48}$Ca and collective $^{44}$S., Comment: 17 pages, 14 figures

We present a determination of optical potentials using the double-folding method based on chiral effective field theory nucleon-nucleon interactions at next-to-next-to-leading order combined with dispersion relations to constrain the imaginary part. This approach is benchmarked on $^{16}$O--$^{16}$O collisions, and extended to the $^{12}$C--$^{12}$C and $^{12}$C--$^{16}$O cases. Predictions derived from these potentials are compared to data for elastic scattering at energies up to 1000 MeV, as well as for fusion at low energy. Without adjusting parameters, excellent agreement with experiment is found. In addition, we study the sensitivity of the corresponding cross sections to the nucleon-nucleon interactions and nuclear densities used.

Quantum many-body theory has witnessed tremendous progress in various fields, ranging from atomic and solid-state physics to quantum chemistry and nuclear structure. Due to the inherent computational burden linked to the ab initio treatment of microscopic fermionic systems, it is desirable to obtain accurate results through low-order perturbation theory. In atomic nuclei however, effects such as strong short-range repulsion between nucleons can spoil the convergence of the expansion and make the reliability of perturbation theory unclear. Mathematicians have devised an extensive machinery to overcome the problem of divergent expansions by making use of so-called resummation methods. In large-scale many-body applications such schemes are often of limited use since no a priori analytical knowledge of the expansion is available. We present here eigenvector continuation as an alternative resummation tool that is both efficient and reliable because it is based on robust and simple mathematical principles., Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures

We exploit the many-body self-consistent Green's function method to analyze finite-temperature properties of infinite nuclear matter and to explore the behavior of the thermal index used to simulate thermal effects in equations of state for astrophysical applications. We show how the thermal index is both density and temperature dependent, unlike often considered, and we provide an error estimate based on our ${\it ab~initio}$ calculations. The inclusion of many-body forces is found to be critical for the density dependence of the thermal index. We also compare our results to a parametrization in terms of the density dependence of the nucleon effective mass. Chiral effective field theory allows one to calculate the response of few-nucleon systems to external currents, both for currents that can be probed in the Standard Model and ones that only exist in Standard-Model extensions. In combination with state-of-the-art many-body methods, the constraints from chiral symmetry can then be implemented in nuclear structure factors that describe the response of atomic nuclei in direct-detection searches for dark matter. We present nuclear structure factors that describe the generalized spin-independent coupling of weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) to nuclei. Our results are based on state-of-the-art nuclear structure calculations using the large-scale nuclear shell model. Starting from quark- and gluon-level operators, we consider all possible coherently enhanced couplings of spin-1/2 and spin-0 WIMPs to one and two nucleons up to third order in chiral effective field theory. This includes a comprehensive discussion of the structure factors corresponding to the leading two-nucleon currents covering, for the first time, the contribution of spin-2 operators. We provide results for the most relevant nuclear targets considered in present and planned dark matter direct detection experiments: fluorine, silicon, argon, and germanium, complementing our previous work on xenon. In this White Paper we present the potential of the Enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission for determining the nature of dense matter; neutron star cores host an extreme density regime which cannot be replicated in a terrestrial laboratory. The tightest statistical constraints on the dense matter equation of state will come from pulse profile modelling of accretion-powered pulsars, burst oscillation sources, and rotation-powered pulsars. Additional constraints will derive from spin measurements, burst spectra, and properties of the accretion flows in the vicinity of the neutron star. We investigate the impact of different properties of the nuclear equation of state in core-collapse supernovae, with a focus on the proto-neutron-star contraction and its impact on the shock evolution. To this end, we introduce a range of equations of state that vary the nucleon effective mass, incompressibility, symmetry energy, and nuclear saturation point. This allows us to point to the different effects in changing these properties from the Lattimer and Swesty to the Shen et al. equations of state, the two most commonly used equations of state in simulations. In particular, we trace the contraction behavior to the effective mass, which determines the thermal nucleonic contributions to the equation of state. Larger effective masses lead to lower pressures at nuclear densities and a lower thermal index. The neutron-rich isotopes $^{58-63}$Cr were produced for the first time at the ISOLDE facility and their masses were measured with the ISOLTRAP spectrometer. The new values are up to 300 times more precise than those in the literature and indicate significantly different nuclear structure from the new mass-surface trend. A gradual onset of deformation is found in this proton and neutron mid-shell region, which is a gateway to the second island of inversion around \emph{N}=40. We construct valence-space Hamiltonians for use in shell-model calculations, where the residual two-body interaction is based on symmetry principles and the low-momentum expansion from chiral effective field theory. In addition to the usual free-space contact interactions, we also include novel center-of-mass--dependent operators that arise due to the Galilean invariance breaking by in-medium effects. We fitted the low-energy constants to 441 ground- and excited-state energies in the sd shell and obtained a root-mean-square derivation of 1.8 MeV at leading order and of 0.5 MeV at next-to-leading order, with natural low-energy constants in all cases. We study $\beta$ decays within an effective theory that treats nuclei as a spherical collective core with an even number of neutrons and protons that can couple to an additional neutron and/or proton. First we explore Gamow-Teller $\beta$ decays of parent odd-odd nuclei into low-lying ground-, one-, and two-phonon states of the daughter even-even system. The low-energy constants of the effective theory are adjusted to data on $\beta$ decays to ground states or Gamow-Teller strengths. The corresponding theoretical uncertainty is estimated based on the power counting of the effective theory. For a variety of medium-mass and heavy isotopes the theoretical matrix elements are in good agreement with experiment within the theoretical uncertainties. We then study the two-neutrino double-$\beta$ decay into ground and excited states. Searches for invisible Higgs decays at the Large Hadron Collider constrain dark matter Higgs-portal models, where dark matter interacts with the Standard Model fields via the Higgs boson. While these searches complement dark matter direct-detection experiments, a comparison of the two limits depends on the coupling of the Higgs boson to the nucleons forming the direct-detection nuclear target, typically parameterized in a single quantity $f_N$. We evaluate $f_N$ using recent phenomenological and lattice-QCD calculations, and include for the first time the coupling of the Higgs boson to two nucleons via pion-exchange currents. We observe a partial cancellation for Higgs-portal models that makes the two-nucleon contribution anomalously small. Our results, summarized as $f_N=0.308(18)$, show that the uncertainty of the Higgs-nucleon coupling has been vastly overestimated in the past. Neutrino-pair production and annihilation through nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung is included in current supernova simulations by rates that are based on the one-pion-exchange approximation. Here we explore the consequences of bremsstrahlung rates based on a modern nuclear interactions for proto-neutron star cooling and the corresponding neutrino emission. We find that despite a reduction of the bremsstrahlung emission by a factor of 2-5 in the neutrinospheric region, models with the improved treatment exhibit only $\lesssim$5% changes of the neutrino luminosities and an increase of $\lesssim$0.7 MeV of the average energies of the radiated neutrino spectra, with the largest effects for the antineutrinos of all flavors and at late times. We show that the empirical linear relation between the magnitude of the EMC effect in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei and the short range correlation scaling factor $a_2$ extracted from high-energy quasi-elastic scattering at $x\ge 1$ is a natural consequence of scale separation and derive the relationship using effective field theory. While the scaling factor $a_2$ is a ratio of nuclear matrix elements that individually depend on the calculational scheme, we show that the ratio is independent of this choice. We perform Green's function Monte Carlo calculations with both chiral and Argonne-Urbana potentials to verify this and determine the scaling factors for light nuclei. The resulting values for $^3$He and $^4$He are in good agreement with experimental values. We propose a formalism for the analysis of direct-detection dark-matter searches that covers all coherent responses for scalar and vector interactions and incorporates QCD constraints imposed by chiral symmetry, including all one- and two-body WIMP-nucleon interactions up to third order in chiral effective field theory. One of the free parameters in the WIMP-nucleus cross section corresponds to standard spin-independent searches, but in general different combinations of new-physics couplings are probed. We identify the interference with the isovector counterpart of the standard spin-independent response and two-body currents as the dominant corrections to the leading spin-independent structure factor, and discuss the general consequences for the interpretation of direct-detection experiments, including minimal extensions of the standard spin-independent analysis. One of the primary science goals of the next generation of hard X-ray timing instruments is to determine the equation of state of the matter at supranuclear densities inside neutron stars, by measuring the radius of neutron stars with different masses to accuracies of a few percent. Three main techniques can be used to achieve this goal. The first involves waveform modelling. The flux we observe from a hotspot on the neutron star surface offset from the rotational pole will be modulated by the star's rotation, giving rise to a pulsation. Information about mass and radius is encoded into the pulse profile via relativistic effects, and tight constraints on mass and radius can be obtained. The second technique involves characterising the spin distribution of accreting neutron stars. The most rapidly rotating stars provide a very clean constraint, since the mass-shedding limit is a function of mass and radius. However the overall spin distribution also provides a guide to the torque mechanisms in operation and the moment of inertia, both of which can depend sensitively on dense matter physics. The third technique is to search for quasi-periodic oscillations in X-ray flux associated with global seismic vibrations of magnetars (the most highly magnetized neutron stars), triggered by magnetic explosions. The vibrational frequencies depend on stellar parameters including the dense matter equation of state. We illustrate how these complementary X-ray timing techniques can be used to constrain the dense matter equation of state, and discuss the results that might be expected from a 10m$^2$ instrument. We also discuss how the results from such a facility would compare to other astronomical investigations of neutron star properties. We calculate the properties of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter based on chiral nucleon-nucleon (NN) and three-nucleon (3N) interactions. To this end, we develop an improved normal-ordering framework that allows to include general 3N interactions starting from a plane-wave partial-wave-decomposed form. We present a common chiral power-counting scheme for vector, axial-vector, scalar, and pseudoscalar WIMP-nucleon interactions, and derive all one- and two-body currents up to third order in the chiral expansion. Matching our amplitudes to non-relativistic effective field theory, we find that chiral symmetry predicts a hierarchy amongst the non-relativistic operators. We study the impact of the nucleon-$\alpha$ P-wave resonances on neutrino-pair bremsstrahlung. Because of the non-central spin-orbit interaction, these resonances lead to an enhanced contribution to the nucleon spin structure factor for temperatures $T \lesssim 4$ MeV. If the $\alpha$-particle fraction is significant and the temperature is in this range, this contribution is competitive with neutron-neutron bremsstrahlung. This may be relevant for neutrino production in core-collapse supernovae or other dense astrophysical environments. We present the first study of pairing in nuclei including three-nucleon forces. We perform systematic calculations of the odd-even mass staggering generated using a microscopic pairing interaction at first order in chiral low-momentum interactions. Significant repulsive contributions from the leading chiral three-nucleon forces are found. Two- and three-nucleon interactions combined account for approximately 70% of the experimental pairing gaps, which leaves room for self-energy and induced interaction effects that are expected to be overall attractive in nuclei., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

Understanding and predicting the formation of shell structure from nuclear forces is a central challenge for nuclear physics. While the magic numbers N=2,8,20 are generally well understood, N=28 is the first standard magic number that is not reproduced in microscopic theories with two-nucleon forces. In this Letter, we show that three-nucleon forces give rise to repulsive interactions between two valence neutrons that are key to explain 48Ca as a magic nucleus, with a high 2+ excitation energy and a concentrated magnetic dipole transition strength. The discrete energy-eigenvalues of two nucleons interacting with a finite-range nuclear force and confined to a harmonic potential are used to numerically reconstruct the free-space scattering phase shifts. The extracted phase shifts are compared to those obtained from the exact continuum scattering solution and agree within the uncertainties of the calculations. Our results suggest that it might be possible to determine the amplitudes for the scattering of complex systems, such as n-d, n-t or n-alpha, from the energy-eigenvalues confined to finite volumes using ab-initio bound-state techniques., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures

We present a detailed study of partial-wave contributions of nuclear forces to pairing in nuclei. For T=1, J=0 pairing, partial waves beyond the standard 1S0 channel play an interesting role for the pair formation in nuclei. The additional contributions are dominated by the repulsive 3P1 partial wave. Their effects, and generally spin-triplet nuclear forces between paired nucleons, are influenced by the interplay of spin-orbit partners. We explore the impact of including partial waves beyond the 1S0 channel on neutron-neutron pairing gaps in semi-magic isotopic chains. In addition, we show that nuclear forces favor T=1, J=0 over T=0, J=1 pairing, except in low-j orbitals. This is in contrast to the free-space motivation that suggests the formation of deuteron-like T=0 pairs in N=Z nuclei. The suppression of T=0 pairing is because the 3S1 strength is distributed on spin-orbit partners and because of the effects of the repulsive 1P1 channel and of D waves., Comment: 10 pages, 16 figures

The limit of neutron-rich nuclei, the neutron drip-line, evolves regularly from light to medium-mass nuclei except for a striking anomaly in the oxygen isotopes. This anomaly is not reproduced in shell-model calculations derived from microscopic two-nucleon forces. Here, we present the first microscopic explanation of the oxygen anomaly based on three-nucleon forces that have been established in few-body systems. This leads to repulsive contributions to the interactions among excess neutrons that change the location of the neutron drip-line from $^{28}$O to the experimentally observed $^{24}$O. We present a perturbative calculation of the neutron matter equation of state based on low-momentum two- and three-nucleon interactions. Our results are compared to the model-independent virial equation of state and to variational calculations, and we provide theoretical error estimates by varying the cutoff used to regulate nuclear interactions. In addition, we study the dependence of the BCS $^1$S$_0$ superfluid pairing gap on nuclear interactions and on the cutoff. We show that two new intra-species P-wave superfluid phases appear in two-component asymmetric Fermi systems with short-range S-wave interactions. In the BEC limit, phonons of the molecular BEC induce P-wave superfluidity in the excess fermions. In the BCS limit, density fluctuations induce P-wave superfluidity in both the majority and the minority species. We show how the renormalization group is used to construct a low-momentum nucleon-nucleon interaction V_{low k}, which unifies all potential models used in nuclear structure calculations. V_{low k} can be directly applied to the nuclear shell model or to nucleonic matter without a G matrix resummation. It is argued that V_{low k} parameterizes a high-order chiral effective field theory two-nucleon force. We use cutoff dependence as a tool to assess the error in the truncation of nuclear forces to two-nucleon interactions and introduce a low-momentum three-nucleon force, which regulates A=3,4 binding energies. The adjusted three-nucleon interaction is perturbative for small cutoffs. We discuss how the renormalization group can be used to derive effective nuclear interactions. Starting from the model-independent low-momentum interaction V_{low k}, we successively integrate out high-lying particle and hole states from momentum shells around the Fermi surface as proposed by Shankar. The renormalization group approach allows for a systematic calculation of induced interactions and yields similar contributions to the scattering amplitude as the two-body parquet equations. We review results for the 1S0 and 3P2 superfluid pairing gaps as well as the spin dependence of effective interactions in neutron matter. The effective low-momentum interaction Vlowk is applied to three- and four-nucleon systems. We investigate the 3H, 3He and 4He binding energies for a wide range of the momentum cutoffs. By construction, all low-energy two-body observables are cutoff-independent, and therefore, any cutoff dependence is due to missing three-body or higher-body forces. We argue that for reasonable cutoffs Vlowk is similar to high-order interactions derived from chiral effective field theory. This motivates augmenting Vlowk by corresponding three-nucleon forces. Renormalization group methods can be applied to the nuclear many-body problem using the approach proposed by Shankar. We start with the two-body low momentum interaction V_{low k} and use the RG flow from the particle-hole channels to calculate the full scattering amplitude in the vicinity of the Fermi surface. This is a new straightforward approach to the many-body problem which is applicable also to condensed matter systems without long-range interactions, such as liquid 3He. We derive the one-loop renormalization group equations for the quasiparticle interaction and the scattering amplitude at zero temperature. The RG presents an elegant method to maintain all momentum scales and preserve the antisymmetry of the scattering amplitude. As a first application we solve the RG equations for neutron matter. The resulting quasiparticle interaction includes effects due to the polarization of the medium, the so-called induced interaction of Babu and Brown.
