We present a numerical procedure allowing one to extract Feshbach resonance parameters from numerical calculations without relying on approximate fitting procedures. Our approach is based on a simple decomposition of the reactance matrix in terms of poles and residual background contribution, and can be applied to the general situation of inelastic overlapping resonances. A simple lineshape for overlapping inelastic resonances, equivalent to known results in the particular cases of isolated and overlapping elastic features, is also rigorously derived., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures

We study polar alkali dimer scattering in a quasi-1D geometry for both reactive and non-reactive species. Elastic and reactive rates are computed as a function of the amplitude of a static electric field within a purely long-range model with suitable boundary conditions at shorter range. We describe the diatomic molecules as rigid rotors and results are compared to the fixed-dipole approximation. We show in particular that for molecules with a sufficiently strong induced dipole moment oriented perpendicular to the trap axis, the long-range repulsive interaction leads to the suppression of short-range processes. Such shielding effect occurs for both reactive and non-reactive molecules, preventing two-body reactions as well as losses due to "sticky processes" [Phys. Rev. A 85, 062712 (2012)] from occurring. We study atom losses associated to a previously unreported magnetic Feshbach resonance in potassium 39. This resonance is peculiar in that it presents $d$-wave character both in the open and in the closed channels, directly coupled by the dominant spin-exchange interaction. The losses associated to a $d$-wave open-channel resonance present specific signatures such as strong temperature dependance and anisotropic line shapes. The resonance strength and position depend on the axial projection of the orbital angular momentum of the system and are extracted from rigorous multichannel calculations. A two-step model, with an intermediate collision complex being ejected from the trap after collisions with free atoms, permits to reproduce the observed dependance of the loss rate as a function of temperature and magnetic field.

We report on the production of a 41K-87Rb dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate in a hybrid trap, consisting of a magnetic quadrupole and an optical dipole potential. After loading both atomic species in the trap, we cool down 87Rb first by magnetic and then by optical evaporation, while 41K is sympathetically cooled by elastic collisions with 87Rb. We eventually produce two-component condensates with more than 10^5 atoms and tunable species population imbalance. We observe the immiscibility of the quantum mixture by measuring the density profile of each species after releasing them from the trap., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

We apply the spectral element method to the determination of scattering and bound states of the multichannel Schr\"odinger equation. In our approach the reaction coordinate is discretized on a grid of points whereas the internal coordinates are described by either purely diabatic or locally diabatic (diabatic-by-sector) bases. Bound levels and scattering matrix elements are determined with spectral accuracy using relatively small numbers of points. The scattering problem is cast as a linear system solved using state-of-the-art sparse matrix non iterative packages. Boundary conditions can be imposed so to compute a single column of the matrix solution. A comparison with log-derivative propagators customarily used in molecular physics is performed. The same discretization scheme can also be applied to bound levels that are computed using direct scalable sparse-matrix solvers., Comment: 24 pages, 5 figures

We show that a pseudospectral representation of the wavefunction using multiple spatial domains of variable size yields a highly accurate, yet efficient method to solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation. The overall spatial domain is split into non-overlapping intervals whose size is chosen according to the local de Broglie wavelength. A multi-domain weak formulation of the Schr\"odinger equation is obtained by representing the wavefunction by Lagrange polynomials with compact support in each domain, discretized at the Legendre-Gauss-Lobatto points. The resulting Hamiltonian is sparse, allowing for efficient diagonalization and storage. Accurate time evolution is carried out by the Chebychev propagator, involving only sparse matrix-vector multiplications. Our approach combines the efficiency of mapped grid methods with the accuracy of spectral representations based on Gaussian quadrature rules and the stability and convergence properties of polynomial propagators. We apply this method to high-harmonic generation and examine the role of the initial state for the harmonic yield near the cutoff.

We study theoretically magnetically induced Feshbach resonances and near-threshold bound states in isotopic NaK pairs. Our calculations accurately reproduce Feshbach spectroscopy data on Na$^{40}$K and explain the origin of the observed multiplets in the p-wave [Phys. Rev. A 85, 051602(R) (2012)]. We apply the model to predict scattering and bound state threshold properties of the boson-boson Na$^{39}$K and Na$^{41}$K systems. We find that the Na$^{39}$K isotopic pair presents broad magnetic Feshbach resonances and favorable ground-state features for producing non-reactive polar molecules by two-photon association. We study theoretically ultracold collisions in quasi one-dimensional optical traps for bosonic and fermionic reactive molecules in the presence of a periodic potential along the trap axis. Elastic, reactive, and umklapp processes due to non-conservation of the center of mass motion are investigated for parameters of relevant experimental interest. The model naturally keeps into account the effect of excited energy bands and is particularly suited for being adapted to rigorous close-coupled calculations. Our formalism shows that a correct derivation of the parameters in tight-binding effective models must include the strong momentum dependence of the coupling constant we predict even for deep lattices., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures

We study polar molecule scattering in quasi-one-dimensional geometries. Elastic and reactive collision rates are computed as a function of collision energy and electric dipole moment for different confinement strengths. The numerical results are interpreted in terms of first order scattering and of adiabatic models. Universal dipolar scattering is also discussed. Our results are relevant to experiments where control of the collision dynamics through one dimensional confinement and an applied electric field is envisioned., Comment: 25 pages, 13 figures

We measure the critical scattering length for the appearance of the first three-body bound state, or Efimov three-body parameter, at seven different Feshbach resonances in ultracold 39K atoms. We study both intermediate and narrow resonances, where the three-body spectrum is expected to be determined by the non-universal coupling of two scattering channels. We observe instead approximately the same universal relation of the three-body parameter with the two-body van der Waals radius already found for broader resonances, which can be modeled with a single channel. This unexpected observation suggests the presence of a new regime for three-body scattering at narrow resonances.

We report the realization of Bose-Einstein condensates of 39K atoms without the aid of an additional atomic coolant. Our route to Bose-Einstein condensation comprises Sub Doppler laser cooling of large atomic clouds with more than 10^10 atoms and evaporative cooling in optical dipole traps where the collisional cross section can be increased using magnetic Feshbach resonances. Large condensates with almost 10^6 atoms can be produced in less than 15 seconds. Our achievements eliminate the need for sympathetic cooling with Rb atoms which was the usual route implemented till date due to the unfavourable collisional property of 39K. Our findings simplify the experimental set-up for producing Bose-Einstein condensates of 39K atoms with tunable interactions, which have a wide variety of promising applications including atom-interferometry to studies on the interplay of disorder and interactions in quantum gases., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We study ultracold atom-ion collisions in the presence of an external magnetic field. At low collision energy the field can drastically modify the translational motion of the ion, which follows quantized cyclotron orbits. We present a rigorous theoretical approach for the calculation of quantum scattering amplitudes in these conditions. Collisions in different magnetic field regimes, identified by the size of the cyclotron radius with respect to the range of the interaction potential, are investigated. We develop an analytical model for ultracold atom-ion collisions using the multichannel quantum-defect formalism. The model is based on the analytical solutions of the r^-4 long-range potential and on the application of a frame transformation between asymptotic and molecular bases. This approach allows the description of the atom-ion interaction in the ultracold domain in terms of three parameters only: the singlet and triplet scattering lengths, assumed to be independent of the relative motion angular momentum, and the lead dispersion coefficient of the asymptotic potential. We also introduce corrections to the scattering lengths that improve the accuracy of our quantum-defect model for higher order partial waves, a particularly important result for an accurate description of shape and Feshbach resonances at finite temperature. The theory is applied to the system composed of a 40Ca+ ion and a Na atom, and compared to numerical coupled-channel calculations carried out using ab initio potentials. For this particular system, we investigate the spectrum of bound states, the rate of charge-transfer processes, and the collision rates in the presence of magnetic Feshbach resonances at zero and finite temperature., Comment: 39 pages, 21 figures

We study atom-ion scattering in the ultracold regime. To this aim, an analytical model based on the multichannel quantum defect formalism is developed and compared to close-coupled numerical calculations. We investigate the occurrence of magnetic Feshbach resonances focusing on the specific 40Ca+ - Na system. The presence of several resonances at experimentally accessible magnetic fields should allow the atom-ion interaction to be precisely tuned. A fully quantum-mechanical study of charge exchange processes shows that charge-exchange rates should remain small even in the presence of resonance effects. We perform extensive magnetic Feshbach spectroscopy of an ultracold mixture of fermionic 40K and bosonic 87Rb atoms. The magnetic-field locations of 14 interspecies resonances is used to construct a quantum collision model able to predict accurate collisional parameters for all K-Rb isotopic pairs. In particular we determine the interspecies s-wave singlet and triplet scattering lengths for the 40K-87Rb mixture as -111 +/- 5 Bohr and -215 +/- 10 Bohr respectively. We also predict accurate scattering lengths and position of Feshbach resonances for the other K-Rb isotopic pairs. We discuss the consequences of our results for current and future experiments with ultracold K-Rb mixtures., Comment: 5 pages, revised version
