Tracking the time evolution of a quantum state allows one to verify the thermalization rate or the propagation speed of correlations in generic quantum systems. Inspired by the energy-time uncertainty principle, bounds have been demonstrated on the maximal speed at which a quantum state can change, resulting in immediate and practical tasks. Based on a programmable superconducting quantum processor, we test the dynamics of various emulated quantum mechanical systems encompassing single- and many-body states. We show that one can test the known quantum speed limits and that modifying a single Hamiltonian parameter allows the observation of the crossover of the different bounds on the dynamics. We also unveil the observation of minimal quantum speed limits in addition to more common maximal ones, i.e., the lowest rate of change of a unitarily evolved quantum state. In this paper, we first introduce the concept of Rota-Baxter family BiHom-$\Omega$-associative algebras, then we define the cochain complex of BiHom-$\Omega$-associative algebras and verify it via Maurer-Cartan methods. Next, we further introduce and study the cohomology theory of Rota-Baxter family BiHom-$\Omega$-associative algebras of weight $\lambda$ and show that this cohomology controls the corresponding deformations. Seismic tomography has long been an effective tool for constructing reliable subsurface structures. However, simultaneous inversion of P- and S-wave velocities presents a significant challenge for conventional seismic tomography methods, which depend on numerical algorithms to calculate traveltimes. A physics informed neural network (PINN)-based seismic tomography method (PINNtomo) has been proposed to solve the eikonal equation and construct the velocity model. Leveraging the powerful approximation capabilities of neural networks, we propose extending PINNtomo to perform multiparameter inversion of P- and S-wave velocities jointly, which we refer to as PINNPStomo. In PINNPStomo, we employ two neural networks: one for the P- and S-wave traveltimes, and another for the P- and S-wave velocities. By optimizing the misfits of P- and S-wave first-arrival traveltimes calculated from the eikonal equations, we can obtain the predicted P- and S-wave velocities that determine these traveltimes. Recognizing that the original PINNtomo utilizes a multiplicative factored eikonal equation, which depends on background traveltimes corresponding to a homogeneous velocity at the source location. We propose a new factored eikonal equation for PINNPStomo to eliminate this dependency. The proposed PINNPStomo, incorporating the new factored eikonal equation, demonstrates superior convergence speed and multiparameter inversion accuracy. Bell nonlocality is an intrinsic feature of quantum mechanics, which can be certified via the violation of Bell inequalities. It is therefore a fundamental question to certify Bell nonlocality from experimental data. Here, we present an optimization scheme to improve nonlocality certification by exploring flexible mappings between Bell inequalities and Hamiltonians corresponding to the Bell operators. We show that several Hamiltonian models can be mapped to new inequalities with improved classical bounds than the original one, enabling a more robust detection of nonlocality. From the other direction, we investigate the mapping from fixed Bell inequalities to Hamiltonians, aiming to maximize quantum violations while considering experimental imperfections. As a practical demonstration, we apply this method to an XXZ-like honeycomb-lattice model utilizing over 70 superconducting qubits. Quantum nonlocality describes a stronger form of quantum correlation than that of entanglement. It refutes Einstein's belief of local realism and is among the most distinctive and enigmatic features of quantum mechanics. It is a crucial resource for achieving quantum advantages in a variety of practical applications, ranging from cryptography and certified random number generation via self-testing to machine learning. Nevertheless, the detection of nonlocality, especially in quantum many-body systems, is notoriously challenging. Here, we report an experimental certification of genuine multipartite Bell correlations, which signal nonlocality in quantum many-body systems, up to 24 qubits with a fully programmable superconducting quantum processor. In particular, we employ energy as a Bell correlation witness and variationally decrease the energy of a many-body system across a hierarchy of thresholds, below which an increasing Bell correlation depth can be certified from experimental data. As an illustrating example, we variationally prepare the low-energy state of a two-dimensional honeycomb model with 73 qubits and certify its Bell correlations by measuring an energy that surpasses the corresponding classical bound with up to 48 standard deviations. In addition, we variationally prepare a sequence of low-energy states and certify their genuine multipartite Bell correlations up to 24 qubits via energies measured efficiently by parity oscillation and multiple quantum coherence techniques. Our results establish a viable approach for preparing and certifying multipartite Bell correlations, which provide not only a finer benchmark beyond entanglement for quantum devices, but also a valuable guide towards exploiting multipartite Bell correlation in a wide spectrum of practical applications., Comment: 11 pages,6 figures + 14 pages, 6 figures

Recent advancements of intermediate-scale quantum processors have triggered tremendous interest in the exploration of practical quantum advantage. The simulation of fluid dynamics, a highly challenging problem in classical physics but vital for practical applications, emerges as a good candidate for showing quantum utility. Here, we report an experiment on the digital simulation of unsteady flows, which consists of quantum encoding, evolution, and detection of flow states, with a superconducting quantum processor. The quantum algorithm is based on the Hamiltonian simulation using the hydrodynamic formulation of the Schr\"odinger equation. With the median fidelities of 99.97% and 99.67% for parallel single- and two-qubit gates respectively, we simulate the dynamics of a two-dimensional (2D) compressible diverging flow and a 2D decaying vortex with ten qubits. The experimental results well capture the temporal evolution of averaged density and momentum profiles, and qualitatively reproduce spatial flow fields with moderate noises. This work demonstrates the potential of quantum computing in simulating more complex flows, such as turbulence, for practical applications.

Non-Abelian topological orders offer an intriguing path towards fault-tolerant quantum computation, where information can be encoded and manipulated in a topologically protected manner immune to arbitrary local noises and perturbations. However, realizing non-Abelian topologically ordered states is notoriously challenging in both condensed matter and programmable quantum systems, and it was not until recently that signatures of non-Abelian statistics were observed through digital quantum simulation approaches. Despite these exciting progresses, none of them has demonstrated the appropriate type of topological orders and associated non-Abelian anyons whose braidings alone support universal quantum computation. Here, we report the realization of non-Abelian topologically ordered states of the Fibonacci string-net model and demonstrate braidings of Fibonacci anyons featuring universal computational power, with a superconducting quantum processor. We exploit efficient quantum circuits to prepare the desired states and verify their nontrivial topological nature by measuring the topological entanglement entropy. In addition, we create two pairs of Fibonacci anyons and demonstrate their fusion rule and non-Abelian braiding statistics by applying unitary gates on the underlying physical qubits. Our results establish a versatile digital approach to exploring exotic non-Abelian topological states and their associated braiding statistics with current noisy intermediate-scale quantum processors.

The spectral form factor (SFF) captures universal spectral fluctuations as signatures of quantum chaos, and has been instrumental in advancing multiple frontiers of physics including the studies of black holes and quantum many-body systems. However, the measurement of SFF in many-body systems is challenging due to the difficulty in resolving level spacings that become exponentially small with increasing system size. Here we experimentally measure the SFF to probe the presence or absence of chaos in quantum many-body systems using a superconducting quantum processor with a randomized measurement protocol. For a Floquet chaotic system, we observe signatures of spectral rigidity of random matrix theory in SFF given by the ramp-plateau behavior. For a Hamiltonian system, we utilize SFF to distinguish the quantum many-body chaotic phase and the prethermal many-body localization. We observe the dip-ramp-plateau behavior of random matrix theory in the chaotic phase, and contrast the scaling of the plateau time in system size between the many-body chaotic and localized phases. Furthermore, we probe the eigenstate statistics by measuring a generalization of the SFF, known as the partial SFF, and observe distinct behaviors in the purities of the reduced density matrix in the two phases. Quantum speed limits (QSLs) impose fundamental constraints on the evolution speed of quantum systems. Traditionally, the Mandelstam-Tamm (MT) and Margolus-Levitin (ML) bounds have been widely employed, relying on the standard deviation and mean of energy distribution to define the QSLs. However, these universal bounds only offer loose restrictions on the quantum evolution. Here we introduce the generalized ML bounds, which prove to be more stringent in constraining dynamic evolution, by utilizing moments of energy spectra of arbitrary orders, even noninteger orders. To validate our findings, we conduct experiments in a superconducting circuit, where we have the capability to prepare a wide range of quantum photonic states and rigorously test these bounds by measuring the evolution of the system and its photon statistics using quantum state tomography. While, in general, the MT bound is effective for short-time evolution, we identify specific parameter regimes where either the MT or the generalized ML bounds suffice to constrain the entire evolution. Our findings not only establish new criteria for estimating QSLs but also substantially enhance our comprehension of the dynamic evolution of quantum systems.

The ability to realize high-fidelity quantum communication is one of the many facets required to build generic quantum computing devices. In addition to quantum processing, sensing, and storage, transferring the resulting quantum states demands a careful design that finds no parallel in classical communication. Existing experimental demonstrations of quantum information transfer in solid-state quantum systems are largely confined to small chains with few qubits, often relying upon non-generic schemes. Here, by using a large-scale superconducting quantum circuit featuring thirty-six tunable qubits, accompanied by general optimization procedures deeply rooted in overcoming quantum chaotic behavior, we demonstrate a scalable protocol for transferring few-particle quantum states in a two-dimensional quantum network. These include single-qubit excitation and also two-qubit entangled states, and two excitations for which many-body effects are present. With the productive evolution of large language models (LLMs) in the field of natural language processing (NLP), tons of effort has been made to effectively fine-tune common pre-trained LLMs to fulfill a variety of tasks in one or multiple specific domain. In practice, there are two prevailing ways, in which the adaptation can be achieved: (i) Multiple Independent Models: Pre-trained LLMs are fine-tuned a few times independently using the corresponding training samples from each task. (ii) An Integrated Model: Samples from all tasks are employed to fine-tune a pre-trianed LLM unitedly. To address the high computing cost and seesawing issue simultaneously, we propose a unified framework that implements a 1 + N mutli-task fine-tuning pattern in LLMs using a novel Customized Gate Control (CGC) Low-rank Adaptation (LoRA) algorithm. Our work aims to take an advantage of both MTL (i.e., CGC) and PEFT (i.e., LoRA) scheme. For a given cluster of tasks, we design an innovative layer that contains two types of experts as additional trainable parameters to make LoRA be compatible with MTL. To comprehensively evaluate the proposed framework, we conduct well-designed experiments on two public datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the unified framework with CGC-LoRA modules achieves higher evaluation scores than all benchmarks on both two datasets.

Topologically ordered phases of matter elude Landau's symmetry-breaking theory, featuring a variety of intriguing properties such as long-range entanglement and intrinsic robustness against local perturbations. Their extension to periodically driven systems gives rise to exotic new phenomena that are forbidden in thermal equilibrium. Here, we report the observation of signatures of such a phenomenon -- a prethermal topologically ordered time crystal -- with programmable superconducting qubits arranged on a square lattice. By periodically driving the superconducting qubits with a surface-code Hamiltonian, we observe discrete time-translation symmetry breaking dynamics that is only manifested in the subharmonic temporal response of nonlocal logical operators. We further connect the observed dynamics to the underlying topological order by measuring a nonzero topological entanglement entropy and studying its subsequent dynamics. Seismic traveltime is critical information conveyed by seismic waves, widely utilized in various geophysical applications. Conventionally, the simulation of seismic traveltime involves solving the eikonal equation. However, the efficiency of traditional numerical solvers is hindered, as they are typically capable of simulating seismic traveltime for only a single source at a time. Recently, deep learning tools, particularly physics-informed neural networks (PINNs), have proven effective in simulating seismic traveltimes for multiple sources. Nonetheless, PINNs face challenges such as limited generalization capabilities across different models and difficulties in training convergence. To address these issues, we have developed a method for simulating multi-source seismic traveltimes in variable velocity models using a deep-learning technique, known as the physics-informed Fourier neural operator (PIFNO). The PIFNO-based method for seismic traveltime generation takes both velocity and background traveltime as inputs, generating the perturbation traveltime as the output. This method incorporates a factorized eikonal equation as the loss function and relies solely on physical laws, eliminating the need for labeled training data. We demonstrate that our proposed method is not only effective in calculating seismic traveltimes for velocity models used during training but also shows promising prediction capabilities for test velocity models. The morphing of 3D structures is suitable for i) future tunable material design for customizing material properties and ii) advanced manufacturing tools for fabricating 3D structures on a 2D plane. However, there is no inverse design method for topologically variable and volumetric morphing or morphing with shape locking, which limits practical engineering applications. In this study, we construct a general inverse design method for 3D architected materials for topologically variable and volumetric morphing, whose shapes are lockable in the morphed states, which can contribute to future tunable materials, design, and advanced manufacturing. Volumetric mapping of bistable unit cells onto any 3D morphing target geometry with kinematic and kinetic modifications can produce flat-foldable and volumetric morphing structures with shape-locking. This study presents a generalized inverse design method for 3D metamaterial morphing that can be used for structural applications with shape locking. Topologically variable morphing enables the manufacture of volumetric structures on a 2D plane, saving tremendous energy and materials compared with conventional 3D printing. Volumetric morphing can significantly expand the design space with tunable physical properties without limiting the selection of base materials.

User modeling, which aims to capture users' characteristics or interests, heavily relies on task-specific labeled data and suffers from the data sparsity issue. Several recent studies tackled this problem by pre-training the user model on massive user behavior sequences with a contrastive learning task. Generally, these methods assume different views of the same behavior sequence constructed via data augmentation are semantically consistent, i.e., reflecting similar characteristics or interests of the user, and thus maximizing their agreement in the feature space. However, due to the diverse interests and heavy noise in user behaviors, existing augmentation methods tend to lose certain characteristics of the user or introduce noisy behaviors. Thus, forcing the user model to directly maximize the similarity between the augmented views may result in a negative transfer. To this end, we propose to replace the contrastive learning task with a new pretext task: Augmentation-Adaptive SelfSupervised Ranking (AdaptSSR), which alleviates the requirement of semantic consistency between the augmented views while pre-training a discriminative user model. Specifically, we adopt a multiple pairwise ranking loss which trains the user model to capture the similarity orders between the implicitly augmented view, the explicitly augmented view, and views from other users. We further employ an in-batch hard negative sampling strategy to facilitate model training. Moreover, considering the distinct impacts of data augmentation on different behavior sequences, we design an augmentation-adaptive fusion mechanism to automatically adjust the similarity order constraint applied to each sample based on the estimated similarity between the augmented views. As a potential revolutionary topic in future information processing, mechanical computing has gained tremendous attention for replacing or supplementing conventional electronics vulnerable to power outages, security attacks, and harsh environments. Despite its potential for constructing intelligent matter towards nonclassical computing systems beyond the von Neumann architecture, most works on mechanical computing demonstrated that the ad hoc design of simple logic gates cannot fully realize a universal mechanical processing framework involving interconnected arithmetic logic components and memory. However, such a logic-with-memory computing architecture is critical for complex and persistent state-dependent computations such as sequential logic. Here we propose a mechanical transistor (M-Transistor), abstracting omnipresent temperatures as the input-output mechanical bits, which consists of a metamaterial thermal channel as the gate terminal driving a nonlinear bistable soft actuator to selectively connect the output terminal to two other variable thermal sources. This M-Transistor is an elementary unit to modularly form various combinational and sequential circuits, such as complex logic gates, registers (volatile memory), and long-term memories (non-volatile memory) with much fewer units than the electronic counterparts. Moreover, they can establish a universal processing core comprising an arithmetic circuit and a register in a compact, reprogrammable network involving periodic read, write, memory, and logic operations of the mechanical bits. Text-based delivery addresses, as the data foundation for logistics systems, contain abundant and crucial location information. How to effectively encode the delivery address is a core task to boost the performance of downstream tasks in the logistics system. Pre-trained Models (PTMs) designed for Natural Language Process (NLP) have emerged as the dominant tools for encoding semantic information in text. Though promising, those NLP-based PTMs fall short of encoding geographic knowledge in the delivery address, which considerably trims down the performance of delivery-related tasks in logistic systems such as Cainiao. To tackle the above problem, we propose a domain-specific pre-trained model, named G2PTL, a Geography-Graph Pre-trained model for delivery address in Logistics field. G2PTL combines the semantic learning capabilities of text pre-training with the geographical-relationship encoding abilities of graph modeling. Specifically, we first utilize real-world logistics delivery data to construct a large-scale heterogeneous graph of delivery addresses, which contains abundant geographic knowledge and delivery information. Then, G2PTL is pre-trained with subgraphs sampled from the heterogeneous graph. Comprehensive experiments are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of G2PTL through four downstream tasks in logistics systems on real-world datasets. G2PTL has been deployed in production in Cainiao's logistics system, which significantly improves the performance of delivery-related tasks. In this paper, we firstly construct an $L_\infty[1]$-algebra via the method of higher derived brackets, whose Maurer-Cartan elements correspond to relative $\Omega$-family Rota-Baxter algebras structures of weight $\lambda$. Shor's algorithm has seriously challenged information security based on public key cryptosystems. However, to break the widely used RSA-2048 scheme, one needs millions of physical qubits, which is far beyond current technical capabilities. Here, we report a universal quantum algorithm for integer factorization by combining the classical lattice reduction with a quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA). The number of qubits required is O(logN/loglog N), which is sublinear in the bit length of the integer $N$, making it the most qubit-saving factorization algorithm to date. We demonstrate the algorithm experimentally by factoring integers up to 48 bits with 10 superconducting qubits, the largest integer factored on a quantum device. We estimate that a quantum circuit with 372 physical qubits and a depth of thousands is necessary to challenge RSA-2048 using our algorithm. Non-Abelian anyons are exotic quasiparticle excitations hosted by certain topological phases of matter. They break the fermion-boson dichotomy and obey non-Abelian braiding statistics: their interchanges yield unitary operations, rather than merely a phase factor, in a space spanned by topologically degenerate wavefunctions. They are the building blocks of topological quantum computing. However, experimental observation of non-Abelian anyons and their characterizing braiding statistics is notoriously challenging and has remained elusive hitherto, in spite of various theoretical proposals. Here, we report an experimental quantum digital simulation of projective non-Abelian anyons and their braiding statistics with up to 68 programmable superconducting qubits arranged on a two-dimensional lattice. By implementing the ground states of the toric-code model with twists through quantum circuits, we demonstrate that twists exchange electric and magnetic charges and behave as a particular type of non-Abelian anyons, i.e., the Ising anyons. In particular, we show experimentally that these twists follow the fusion rules and non-Abelian braiding statistics of the Ising type, and can be explored to encode topological logical qubits. Furthermore, we demonstrate how to implement both single- and two-qubit logic gates through applying a sequence of elementary Pauli gates on the underlying physical qubits. Our results demonstrate a versatile quantum digital approach for simulating non-Abelian anyons, offering a new lens into the study of such peculiar quasiparticles.

Quantum many-body simulation provides a straightforward way to understand fundamental physics and connect with quantum information applications. However, suffering from exponentially growing Hilbert space size, characterization in terms of few-body probes in real space is often insufficient to tackle challenging problems such as quantum critical behavior and many-body localization (MBL) in higher dimensions. Here, we experimentally employ a new paradigm on a superconducting quantum processor, exploring such elusive questions from a Fock space view: mapping the many-body system onto an unconventional Anderson model on a complex Fock space network of many-body states. By observing the wave packet propagating in Fock space and the emergence of a statistical ergodic ensemble, we reveal a fresh picture for characterizing representative many-body dynamics: thermalization, localization, and scarring. In addition, we observe a quantum critical regime of anomalously enhanced wave packet width and deduce a critical point from the maximum wave packet fluctuations, which lend support for the two-dimensional MBL transition in finite-sized systems. Our work unveils a new perspective of exploring many-body physics in Fock space, demonstrating its practical applications on contentious MBL aspects such as criticality and dimensionality. Topological photonics provides a novel platform to explore topological physics beyond traditional electronic materials and stimulates promising applications in topologically protected light transport and lasers. Classical degrees of freedom such as polarizations and wavevectors are routinely used to synthesize topological light modes. Beyond the classical regime, inherent quantum nature of light gives birth to a wealth of fundamentally distinct topological states, which offer topological protection in quantum information processing. Here we implement such experiments on topological states of quantized light in a superconducting circuit, on which three resonators are tunably coupled to a gmon qubit. We construct one and two-dimensional Fock-state lattices where topological transport of zero-energy states, strain induced pseudo-Landau levels, valley Hall effect and Haldane chiral edge currents are demonstrated. Our study extends the topological states of light to the quantum regime, bridges topological phases of condensed matter physics with circuit quantum electrodynamics, and offers a new freedom in controlling the quantum states of multiple resonators., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

In the management of lung nodules, we are desirable to predict nodule evolution in terms of its diameter variation on Computed Tomography (CT) scans and then provide a follow-up recommendation according to the predicted result of the growing trend of the nodule. In order to improve the performance of growth trend prediction for lung nodules, it is vital to compare the changes of the same nodule in consecutive CT scans. Motivated by this, we screened out 4,666 subjects with more than two consecutive CT scans from the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST) dataset to organize a temporal dataset called NLSTt. In specific, we first detect and pair regions of interest (ROIs) covering the same nodule based on registered CT scans. After that, we predict the texture category and diameter size of the nodules through models. Last, we annotate the evolution class of each nodule according to its changes in diameter. Based on the built NLSTt dataset, we propose a siamese encoder to simultaneously exploit the discriminative features of 3D ROIs detected from consecutive CT scans. Then we novelly design a spatial-temporal mixer (STM) to leverage the interval changes of the same nodule in sequential 3D ROIs and capture spatial dependencies of nodule regions and the current 3D ROI. According to the clinical diagnosis routine, we employ hierarchical loss to pay more attention to growing nodules. The extensive experiments on our organized dataset demonstrate the advantage of our proposed method. The ability to morph flat sheets into complex 3D shapes is extremely useful for fast manufacturing and saving materials while also allowing volumetrically efficient storage and shipment and a functional use. Direct 4D printing is a compelling method to morph complex 3D shapes out of as-printed 2D plates. However, most direct 4D printing methods require multi-material systems involving costly machines. Moreover, most works have used an open-cell design for shape shifting by encoding a collection of 1D rib deformations, which cannot remain structurally stable. Here, we demonstrate the direct 4D printing of an isotropic single-material system to morph 2D continuous bilayer plates into doubly curved and multimodal 3D complex shapes whose geometry can also be locked after deployment. We develop an inverse-design algorithm that integrates extrusion-based 3D printing of a single-material system to directly morph a raw printed sheet into complex 3D geometries such as a doubly curved surface with shape locking. Furthermore, our inverse-design tool encodes the localized shape-memory anisotropy during the process, providing the processing conditions for a target 3D morphed geometry. Our approach could be used for conventional extrusion-based 3D printing for various applications including biomedical devices, deployable structures, smart textiles, and pop-up Kirigami structures.

Quantum computing promises to enhance machine learning and artificial intelligence. Different quantum algorithms have been proposed to improve a wide spectrum of machine learning tasks. Yet, recent theoretical works show that, similar to traditional classifiers based on deep classical neural networks, quantum classifiers would suffer from the vulnerability problem: adding tiny carefully-crafted perturbations to the legitimate original data samples would facilitate incorrect predictions at a notably high confidence level. This will pose serious problems for future quantum machine learning applications in safety and security-critical scenarios. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of quantum adversarial learning with programmable superconducting qubits. We train quantum classifiers, which are built upon variational quantum circuits consisting of ten transmon qubits featuring average lifetimes of 150 $\mu$s, and average fidelities of simultaneous single- and two-qubit gates above 99.94% and 99.4% respectively, with both real-life images (e.g., medical magnetic resonance imaging scans) and quantum data. We demonstrate that these well-trained classifiers (with testing accuracy up to 99%) can be practically deceived by small adversarial perturbations, whereas an adversarial training process would significantly enhance their robustness to such perturbations. Our results reveal experimentally a crucial vulnerability aspect of quantum learning systems under adversarial scenarios and demonstrate an effective defense strategy against adversarial attacks, which provide a valuable guide for quantum artificial intelligence applications with both near-term and future quantum devices., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, 8 algorithms

Quantum many-body scarring (QMBS) -- a recently discovered form of weak ergodicity breaking in strongly-interacting quantum systems -- presents opportunities for mitigating thermalization-induced decoherence in quantum information processsing. However, the existing experimental realizations of QMBS are based on kinetically-constrained systems where an emergent dynamical symmetry "shields" such states from the thermalizing bulk of the spectrum. Here, we experimentally realize a distinct kind of QMBS phenomena by approximately decoupling a part of the many-body Hilbert space in the computational basis. Utilizing a programmable superconducting processor with 30 qubits and tunable couplings, we realize Hilbert space scarring in a non-constrained model in different geometries, including a linear chain as well as a quasi-one-dimensional comb geometry. By performing full quantum state tomography on 4-qubit subsystems, we provide strong evidence for QMBS states by measuring qubit population dynamics, quantum fidelity and entanglement entropy following a quench from initial product states. Our experimental findings broaden the realm of QMBS mechanisms and pave the way to exploiting correlations in QMBS states for applications in quantum information technology.

Solving the wave equation numerically constitutes the majority of the computational cost for applications like seismic imaging and full waveform inversion. An alternative approach is to solve the frequency domain Helmholtz equation, since it offers a reduction in dimensionality as it can be solved per frequency. However, computational challenges with the classical Helmholtz solvers such as the need to invert a large stiffness matrix can make these approaches computationally infeasible for large 3D models or for modeling high frequencies. Moreover, these methods do not have a mechanism to transfer information gained from solving one problem to the next. This becomes a bottleneck for applications like full waveform inversion where repeated modeling is necessary. Therefore, recently a new approach based on the emerging paradigm of physics informed neural networks (PINNs) has been proposed to solve the Helmholtz equation. The method has shown promise in addressing several challenging associated with the conventional algorithms, including flexibility to model additional physics and the use of transfer learning to speed up computations. However, the approach still needs further developments to be fully practicable. Foremost amongst the challenges is the slow convergence speed and reduced accuracy, especially in presence of sharp heterogeneities in the velocity model. Therefore, with an eye on exploring how improved convergence can be obtained for the PINN Helmholtz solvers, we study different activation functions routinely used in the PINN literature, in addition to the swish activation function - a variant of ReLU that has shown improved performance on a number of data science problems. Through a comparative study, we find that swish yields superior performance compared to the other activation functions routinely used in the PINN literature.

We report the observation of a symmetry-protected topological time crystal, which is implemented with an array of programmable superconducting qubits. Unlike the time crystals reported in previous experiments, where spontaneous breaking of the discrete time translational symmetry occurs for local observables throughout the whole system, the topological time crystal observed in our experiment breaks the time translational symmetry only at the boundaries and has trivial dynamics in the bulk. More concretely, we observe robust long-lived temporal correlations and sub-harmonic temporal response for the edge spins up to 40 driving cycles. We demonstrate that the sub-harmonic response is independent of whether the initial states are random product states or symmetry-protected topological states, and experimentally map out the phase boundary between the time crystalline and thermal phases. Synthesizing many-body interaction Hamiltonian is a central task in quantum simulation. However, it is challenging to synthesize interactions including more than two spins. Borrowing tools from quantum optics, we synthesize five-body spin-exchange interaction in a superconducting quantum circuit by simultaneously exciting four independent qubits with time-energy correlated photon quadruples generated from a qudit. During the dynamic evolution of the five-body interaction, a Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state is generated in a single step with fidelity estimated to be $0.685$. We compare the influence of noise on the three-, four- and five-body interaction as a step toward answering the question on the quantum origin of chiral molecules. We also demonstrate a many-body Mach-Zehnder interferometer which potentially has a Heisenberg-limit sensitivity. Real-world recommendation systems often consist of two phases. In the first phase, multiple predictive models produce the probability of different immediate user actions. In the second phase, these predictions are aggregated according to a set of 'strategic parameters' to meet a diverse set of business goals, such as longer user engagement, higher revenue potential, or more community/network interactions. In addition to building accurate predictive models, it is also crucial to optimize this set of 'strategic parameters' so that primary goals are optimized while secondary guardrails are not hurt. In this setting with multiple and constrained goals, this paper discovers that a probabilistic strategic parameter regime can achieve better value compared to the standard regime of finding a single deterministic parameter. The new probabilistic regime is to learn the best distribution over strategic parameter choices and sample one strategic parameter from the distribution when each user visits the platform. To pursue the optimal probabilistic solution, we formulate the problem into a stochastic compositional optimization problem, in which the unbiased stochastic gradient is unavailable. Our approach is applied in a popular social network platform with hundreds of millions of daily users and achieves +0.22% lift of user engagement in a recommendation task and +1.7% lift in revenue in an advertising optimization scenario comparing to using the best deterministic parameter strategy.

Solving the wave equation is one of the most (if not the most) fundamental problems we face as we try to illuminate the Earth using recorded seismic data. The Helmholtz equation provides wavefield solutions that are dimensionally reduced, per frequency, compared to the time domain, which is useful for many applications, like full waveform inversion (FWI). However, our ability to attain such wavefield solutions depends often on the size of the model and the complexity of the wave equation. Thus, we use here a recently introduced framework based on neural networks to predict functional solutions through setting the underlying physical equation as a loss function to optimize the neural network parameters. For an input given by a location in the model space, the network learns to predict the wavefield value at that location, and its partial derivatives using a concept referred to as automatic differentiation, to fit, in our case, a form of the Helmholtz equation. We specifically seek the solution of the scattered wavefield considering a simple homogeneous background model that allows for analytical solutions of the background wavefield. Providing the neural network (NN) a reasonable number of random points from the model space will ultimately train a fully connected deep NN to predict the scattered wavefield function. The size of the network depends mainly on the complexity of the desired wavefield, with such complexity increasing with increasing frequency and increasing model complexity. However, smaller networks can provide smoother wavefields that might be useful for inversion applications. Preliminary tests on a two-box-shaped scatterer model with a source in the middle, as well as, the Marmousi model with a source on the surface demonstrate the potential of the NN for this application. Additional tests on a 3D model demonstrate the potential versatility of the approach.

Wavefield reconstruction inversion (WRI) formulates a PDE-constrained optimization problem to reduce cycle skipping in full-waveform inversion (FWI). WRI often requires expensive matrix inversions to reconstruct frequency-domain wavefields. Physics-informed neural network (PINN) uses the underlying physical laws as loss functions to train the neural network (NN), and it has shown its effectiveness in solving the Helmholtz equation and generating Green's functions, specifically for the scattered wavefield. By including a data-constrained term in the loss function, the trained NN can reconstruct a wavefield that simultaneously fits the recorded data and satisfies the Helmholtz equation for a given initial velocity model. Using the predicted wavefields, we rely on a small-size NN to predict the velocity using the reconstructed wavefield. In this velocity prediction NN, spatial coordinates are used as input data to the network and the scattered Helmholtz equation is used to define the loss function. After we train this network, we are able to predict the velocity in the domain of interest. We develop this PINN-based WRI method and demonstrate its potential using a part of the Sigsbee2A model and a modified Marmousi model. The results show that the PINN-based WRI is able to invert for a reasonable velocity with very limited iterations and frequencies, which can be used in a subsequent FWI application.

Seismic traveltime tomography using transmission data is widely used to image the Earth's interior from global to local scales. In seismic imaging, it is used to obtain velocity models for subsequent depth-migration or full-waveform inversion. In addition, cross-hole tomography has been successfully applied for a variety of applications, including mineral exploration, reservoir monitoring, and CO2 injection and sequestration. Conventional tomography techniques suffer from a number of limitations, including the use of a smoothing regularizer that is agnostic to the physics of wave propagation. Here, we propose a novel tomography method to address these challenges using developments in the field of scientific machine learning. Using seismic traveltimes observed at seismic stations covering part of the computational model, we train neural networks to approximate the traveltime factor and the velocity fields, subject to the physics-informed regularizer formed by the factored eikonal equation. This allows us to better compensate for the ill-posedness of the tomography problem compared to conventional methods and results in a number of other attractive features, including computational efficiency. We show the efficacy of the proposed method and its capabilities through synthetic tests for surface seismic and cross-hole geometries. Contrary to conventional techniques, we find the performance of the proposed method to be agnostic to the choice of the initial velocity model.

Since the original algorithm by John Vidale in 1988 to numerically solve the isotropic eikonal equation, there has been tremendous progress on the topic addressing an array of challenges including improvement of the solution accuracy, incorporation of surface topography, adding more accurate physics by accounting for anisotropy/attenuation in the medium, and speeding up computations using multiple CPUs and GPUs. Despite these advances, there is no mechanism in these algorithms to carry on information gained by solving one problem to the next. Moreover, these approaches may breakdown for certain complex forms of the eikonal equation, requiring approximation methods to estimate the solution. Therefore, we seek an alternate approach to address the challenge in a holistic manner, i.e., a method that not only makes it simpler to incorporate topography, allow accounting for any level of complexity in physics, benefiting from computational speedup due to the availability of multiple CPUs or GPUs, but also able to transfer knowledge gained from solving one problem to the next. We develop an algorithm based on the emerging paradigm of physics-informed neural network to solve various forms of the eikonal equation. We show how transfer learning and surrogate modeling can be used to speed up computations by utilizing information gained from prior solutions. We also propose a two-stage optimization scheme to expedite the training process in presence of sharper heterogeneity in the velocity model. Furthermore, we demonstrate how the proposed approach makes it simpler to incorporate additional physics and other features in contrast to conventional methods that took years and often decades to make these advances. Quantum emulators, owing to their large degree of tunability and control, allow the observation of fine aspects of closed quantum many-body systems, as either the regime where thermalization takes place or when it is halted by the presence of disorder. The latter, dubbed many-body localization (MBL) phenomenon, describes the non-ergodic behavior that is dynamically identified by the preservation of local information and slow entanglement growth. Here, we provide a precise observation of this same phenomenology in the case the onsite energy landscape is not disordered, but rather linearly varied, emulating the Stark MBL. To this end, we construct a quantum device composed of thirty-two superconducting qubits, faithfully reproducing the relaxation dynamics of a non-integrable spin model. Generative adversarial networks are an emerging technique with wide applications in machine learning, which have achieved dramatic success in a number of challenging tasks including image and video generation. When equipped with quantum processors, their quantum counterparts--called quantum generative adversarial networks (QGANs)--may even exhibit exponential advantages in certain machine learning applications. Here, we report an experimental implementation of a QGAN using a programmable superconducting processor, in which both the generator and the discriminator are parameterized via layers of single- and multi-qubit quantum gates. The programmed QGAN runs automatically several rounds of adversarial learning with quantum gradients to achieve a Nash equilibrium point, where the generator can replicate data samples that mimic the ones from the training set. Our implementation is promising to scale up to noisy intermediate-scale quantum devices, thus paving the way for experimental explorations of quantum advantages in practical applications with near-term quantum technologies.

Frequency-domain wavefield solutions corresponding to the anisotropic acoustic wave equations can be used to describe the anisotropic nature of the earth. To solve a frequency-domain wave equation, we often need to invert the impedance matrix. This results in a dramatic increase in computational cost as the model size increases. It is even a bigger challenge for anisotropic media, where the impedance matrix is far more complex. To address this issue, we use the emerging paradigm of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) to obtain wavefield solutions for an acoustic wave equation for transversely isotropic (TI) media with a vertical axis of symmetry (VTI). PINNs utilize the concept of automatic differentiation to calculate its partial derivatives. Thus, we use the wave equation as a loss function to train a neural network to provide functional solutions to form of the acoustic VTI wave equation. Instead of predicting the pressure wavefields directly, we solve for the scattered pressure wavefields to avoid dealing with the point source singularity. We use the spatial coordinates as input data to the network, which outputs the real and imaginary parts of the scattered wavefields and auxiliary function. After training a deep neural network (NN), we can evaluate the wavefield at any point in space instantly using this trained NN. We demonstrate these features on a simple anomaly model and a layered model. Additional tests on a modified 3D Overthrust model and a model with irregular topography also show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Quantum computers are an increasingly hopeful means for understanding large quantum many-body systems bearing high computational complexity. Such systems exhibit complex evolutions of quantum states, and are prevailing in fundamental physics, e.g., quantum gravity. Computing the transition amplitudes between different quantum states by quantum computers is one of the promising ways to solve such computational complexity problems. In this work, we apply a 10-qubit superconducting quantum processor, where the all-to-all circuit connectivity enables a many-body entangling gate that is highly efficient for state generation, to studying the transition amplitudes in loop quantum gravity. With the device metrics such as qubit coherence, control accuracy, and integration level being continuously improved, superconducting quantum processors are expected to outperform their classical counterparts in handling many-body dynamics and may lead to a deeper understanding of quantum gravity., Comment: 12 Pages, 8 figures, 5 tables

A major challenge in developing quantum computing technologies is to accomplish high precision tasks by utilizing multiplex optimization approaches, on both the physical system and algorithm levels. Loss functions assessing the overall performance of quantum circuits can provide the foundation for many optimization techniques. In this paper, we use the quadratic error loss and the final-state fidelity loss to characterize quantum circuits. We find that the distribution of computation error is approximately Gaussian, which in turn justifies the quadratic error loss. It is shown that these loss functions can be efficiently evaluated in a scalable way by sampling from Clifford-dominated circuits. We demonstrate the results by numerically simulating ten-qubit noisy quantum circuits with various error models as well as executing four-qubit circuits with up to ten layers of two-qubit gates on a superconducting quantum processor. The eikonal equation is utilized across a wide spectrum of science and engineering disciplines. In seismology, it regulates seismic wave traveltimes needed for applications like source localization, imaging, and inversion. Several numerical algorithms have been developed over the years to solve the eikonal equation. However, these methods require considerable modifications to incorporate additional physics, such as anisotropy, and may even breakdown for certain complex forms of the eikonal equation, requiring approximation methods. Moreover, they suffer from computational bottleneck when repeated computations are needed for perturbations in the velocity model and/or the source location, particularly in large 3D models. Here, we propose an algorithm to solve the eikonal equation based on the emerging paradigm of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs). By minimizing a loss function formed by imposing the eikonal equation, we train a neural network to output traveltimes that are consistent with the underlying partial differential equation. We observe sufficiently high traveltime accuracy for most applications of interest. We also demonstrate how the proposed algorithm harnesses machine learning techniques like transfer learning and surrogate modeling to speed up traveltime computations for updated velocity models and source locations. Furthermore, we use a locally adaptive activation function and adaptive weighting of the terms in the loss function to improve convergence rate and solution accuracy. We also show the flexibility of the method in incorporating medium anisotropy and free-surface topography compared to conventional methods that require significant algorithmic modifications. These properties of the proposed PINN eikonal solver are highly desirable in obtaining a flexible and efficient forward modeling engine for seismological applications.

For a finite graph $G$, we study the maximum $2$-edge colorable subgraph problem and a related ratio $\frac{\mu(G)}{\nu(G)}$, where $\nu(G)$ is the matching number of $G$, and $\mu(G)$ is the size of the largest matching in any pair $(H,H')$ of disjoint matchings maximizing $|H| + |H'|$ (equivalently, forming a maximum $2$-edge colorable subgraph). Previously, it was shown that $\frac{4}{5} \le \frac{\mu(G)}{\nu(G)} \le 1$, and the class of graphs achieving $\frac{4}{5}$ was completely characterized. We show here that any rational number between $\frac{4}{5}$ and $1$ can be achieved by a connected graph. Furthermore, we prove that every graph with ratio less than $1$ must admit special subgraphs.

Here we report the first observation of simultaneous excitation of two noninteracting atoms by a pair of time-frequency correlated photons in a superconducting circuit. The strong coupling regime of this process enables the synthesis of a three-body interaction Hamiltonian, which allows the generation of the tripartite Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger state in a single step with a fidelity as high as 0.95. We further demonstrate the quantum Zeno effect of inhibiting the simultaneous two-atom excitation by continuously measuring whether the first photon is emitted. The naturally persistent flow of hundreds of dust particles is experimentally achieved in a dusty plasma system with the asymmetric sawteeth of gears on the electrode. It is also demonstrated that the direction of the dust particle flowcan be controlled by changing the plasma conditions of the gas pressure or the plasma power. Numerical simulations of dust particles with the ion drag inside the asymmetric sawteeth verify the experimental observations of the flow rectification of dust particles. Both experiments and simulations suggest that the asymmetric potential and the collective effect are the twokeys in this dusty plasma ratchet.With the nonequilibrium ion drag, the dust flow along the asymmetric orientation of this electric potential of the ratchet can be reversed by changing the balance height of dust particles using different plasma conditions., Comment: 5 pages,5 figures

Superradiance and subradiance concerning enhanced and inhibited collective radiation of an ensemble of atoms have been a central topic in quantum optics. However, precise generation and control of these states remain challenging. Here we deterministically generate up to 10-qubit superradiant and 8-qubit subradiant states, each containing a single excitation, in a superconducting quantum circuit with multiple qubits interconnected by a cavity resonator. The $\sqrt{N}$-scaling enhancement of the coupling strength between the superradiant states and the cavity is validated. By applying appropriate phase gate on each qubit, we are able to switch the single collective excitation between superradiant and subradiant states. While the subradiant states containing a single excitation are forbidden from emitting photons, we demonstrate that they can still absorb photons from the resonator. However, for even number of qubits, a singlet state with half of the qubits being excited can neither emit nor absorb photons, which is verified with 4 qubits. We report on deterministic generation of 18-qubit genuinely entangled Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) state and multi-component atomic Schr\"{o}dinger cat states of up to 20 qubits on a quantum processor, which features 20 superconducting qubits interconnected by a bus resonator. By engineering a one-axis twisting Hamiltonian enabled by the resonator-mediated interactions, the system of qubits initialized coherently evolves to an over-squeezed, non-Gaussian regime, where atomic Schr\"{o}dinger cat states, i.e., superpositions of atomic coherent states including GHZ state, appear at specific time intervals in excellent agreement with theory. With high controllability, we are able to take snapshots of the dynamics by plotting quasidistribution $Q$-functions of the 20-qubit atomic cat states, and globally characterize the 18-qubit GHZ state which yields a fidelity of $0.525\pm0.005$ confirming genuine eighteen-partite entanglement. Our results demonstrate the largest entanglement controllably created so far in solid state architectures, and the process of generating and detecting multipartite entanglement may promise applications in practical quantum metrology, quantum information processing and quantum computation., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 1 table including supplementary material

Medium-scale quantum devices that integrate about hundreds of physical qubits are likely to be developed in the near future. However, such devices will lack the resources for realizing quantum fault tolerance. Therefore, the main challenge of exploring the advantage of quantum computation is to minimize the impact of device and control imperfections without encoding. Quantum error mitigation is a solution satisfying the requirement. Here, we demonstrate an error mitigation protocol based on gate set tomography and quasiprobability decomposition. One- and two-qubit circuits are tested on a superconducting device, and computation errors are successfully suppressed. Because this protocol is universal for digital quantum computers and algorithms computing expected values, our results suggest that error mitigation can be an essential component of near-future quantum computation.

A central task towards building a practical quantum computer is to protect individual qubits from decoherence while retaining the ability to perform high-fidelity entangling gates involving arbitrary two qubits. Here we propose and demonstrate a dephasing-insensitive procedure for storing and processing quantum information in an all-to-all connected superconducting circuit involving multiple frequency-tunable qubits, each of which can be controllably coupled to any other through a central bus resonator. Although it is generally believed that the extra frequency tunability enhances the control freedom but induces more dephasing impact for superconducting qubits, our results show that any individual qubit can be dynamically decoupled from dephasing noise by applying a weak continuous and resonant driving field whose phase is reversed in the middle of the pulse. More importantly, we demonstrate a new method for realizing two-qubit phase gate with inherent dynamical decoupling via the combination of continuous driving and qubit-qubit swapping coupling. When a quantum system is driven adiabatically through a parametric cycle in a degenerate Hilbert space, the state would acquire a non-Abelian geometric phase, which is stable and forms the foundation for holonomic quantum computation (HQC). However, in the adiabatic limit, the environmental decoherence becomes a significant source of errors. Recently, various non-adiabatic HQC schemes have been proposed, but all at the price of increased sensitivity to control errors. Alternatively, there exist theoretical proposals for speeding up HQC by the technique of "shortcut to adiabaticity" (STA), but no experimental demonstration has been reported so far, as these proprosals involve a complicated control of four energy levels simultaneously. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate that HQC via shortcut to adiabaticity can be constructed with only three energy levels, using a superconducting qubit in a scalable architecture. With this scheme, all holonomic single-qubit operations can be realized non-adiabatically through a single cycle of state evolution. As a result, we are able to experimentally benchmark the stability of STA+HQC against NHQC in the same platform. The flexibility and simplicity of our scheme makes it also implementable on other systems, such as nitrogen-vacancy center, quantum dots, and nuclear magnetic resonance., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

We have synthesized the anti-symmetric spin exchange interaction (ASI), which is also called the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, in a superconducting circuit containing five superconducting qubits connected to a bus resonator, by periodically modulating the transition frequencies of the qubits with different modulation phases. This allows us to show the chiral spin dynamics in three-, four- and five-spin clusters. We also demonstrate a three-spin chiral logic gate and entangle up to five qubits in Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger states. Geometric phase, associated with holonomy transformation in quantum state space, is an important quantum-mechanical effect. Besides fundamental interest, this effect has practical applications, among which geometric quantum computation is a paradigm, where quantum logic operations are realized through geometric phase manipulation that has some intrinsic noise-resilient advantages and may enable simplified implementation of multiqubit gates compared to the dynamical approach. Here we report observation of a continuous-variable geometric phase and demonstrate a quantum gate protocol based on this phase in a superconducting circuit, where five qubits are controllably coupled to a resonator. Our geometric approach allows for one-step implementation of $n$-qubit controlled-phase gates, which represents a remarkable advantage compared to gate decomposition methods, where the number of required steps dramatically increases with $n$. Following this approach, we realize these gates with $n$ up to 4, verifying the high efficiency of this geometric manipulation for quantum computation., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures
