In this study, we successfully developed two-dimensional paper-based analytical devices using a hybrid technique of injection molding and embossing. This innovative approach involves passive or active delivery of molten wax onto a glass substrate through a sealed chip, facilitating wax stamp creation.

Objective: Most existing fine-tuned biomedical large language models (LLMs) focus on enhancing performance in monolingual biomedical question answering and conversation tasks. To investigate the effectiveness of the fine-tuned LLMs on diverse biomedical NLP tasks in different languages, We present Taiyi, a bilingual fine-tuned LLM for diverse biomedical tasks. Materials and Methods: We first curated a comprehensive collection of 140 existing biomedical text mining datasets (102 English and 38 Chinese datasets) across over 10 task types. Subsequently, a two-stage strategy is proposed for supervised fine-tuning to optimize the model performance across varied tasks. Results: Experimental results on 13 test sets covering named entity recognition, relation extraction, text classification, question answering tasks demonstrate that Taiyi achieves superior performance compared to general LLMs. The case study involving additional biomedical NLP tasks further shows Taiyi's considerable potential for bilingual biomedical multi-tasking. Conclusion: Leveraging rich high-quality biomedical corpora and developing effective fine-tuning strategies can significantly improve the performance of LLMs within the biomedical domain. Taiyi shows the bilingual multi-tasking capability through supervised fine-tuning. However, those tasks such as information extraction that are not generation tasks in nature remain challenging for LLM-based generative approaches, and they still underperform the conventional discriminative approaches of smaller language models.

To address the major challenges to obtain high spatial resolution in snapshot hyperspectral imaging, 3D printed glass lightguide array has been developed to sample the intermediate image in high spatial resolution and redistribute the pixels in the output end to achieve high spectral resolution. Curved 3D printed lightguide array can significantly simplify the snapshot hyperspectral imaging system, achieve better imaging performance, and reduce the system complexity and cost. We have developed two-photon polymerization process to print glass lightguide array, and demonstrated the system performance with biological samples. This new snapshot technology will catalyze new hyperspectral imaging system development and open doors for new applications from UV to IR.

Image bitmaps have been widely used in in-memory applications, which consume lots of storage space and energy. Compared with legacy DRAM, non-volatile memories (NVMs) are suitable for bitmap storage due to the salient features in capacity and power savings. However, NVMs suffer from higher latency and energy consumption in writes compared with reads. Although compressing data in write accesses to NVMs on-the-fly reduces the bit-writes in NVMs, existing precise or approximate compression schemes show limited performance improvements for data of bitmaps, due to the irregular data patterns and variance in data. We observe that the data containing bitmaps show the pixel-level similarity due to the analogous contents in adjacent pixels. By exploiting the pixel-level similarity, we propose SimCom, an efficient similarity-aware compression scheme in hardware layer, to compress data for each write access on-the-fly. The idea behind SimCom is to compress continuous similar words into the pairs of base words with runs. With the aid of domain knowledge of images, SimCom adaptively selects an appropriate compression mode to achieve an efficient trade-off between image quality and memory performance. We implement SimCom on GEM5 with NVMain and evaluate the performance with real-world workloads. Our results demonstrate that SimCom reduces 33.0%, 34.8% write latency and saves 28.3%, 29.0% energy than state-of-the-art FPC and BDI with minor quality loss of 3%., Comment: 14 pages, 21 figures

As one important means of ensuring secure operation in a power system, the contingency selection and ranking methods need to be more rapid and accurate. A novel method-based least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) algorithm is proposed in this paper to apply to online static security assessment (OSSA). The assessment is based on a security index, which is applied to select and screen contingencies. Firstly, the multi-step adaptive Lasso (MSA-Lasso) regression algorithm is introduced based on the regression algorithm, whose predictive performance has an advantage. Then, an OSSA module is proposed to evaluate and select contingencies in different load conditions. In addition, the Lasso algorithm is employed to predict the security index of each power system operation state with the consideration of bus voltages and power flows, according to Newton-Raphson load flow (NRLF) analysis in post-contingency states. Finally, the numerical results of applying the proposed approach to the IEEE 14-bus, 118-bus, and 300-bus test systems demonstrate the accuracy and rapidity of OSSA., Comment: Accepted by Applied Sciences

Searching for two-dimensional (2D) organic Dirac materials, which have more adaptable practical applications in comparing with inorganic ones, is of great significance and has been ongoing. However, only two kinds of these materials with low Fermi velocity have been discovered so far. Herein, we report the design of an organic monolayer with C$_4$N$_3$H stoichiometry which possesses fascinating structure and good stability in its free-standing state. More importantly, we demonstrate that this monolayer is a semimetal with anisotropic Dirac cones and very high Fermi velocity. This Fermi velocity is roughly one order of magnitude larger than that in 2D organic Dirac materials ever reported, and is comparable to that in graphene. The Dirac states in this monolayer arise from the extended $\pi$-electron conjugation system formed by the overlapping 2\emph{p}$_z$ orbitals of carbon and nitrogen atoms. Data deduplication is able to effectively identify and eliminate redundant data and only maintain a single copy of files and chunks. Hence, it is widely used in cloud storage systems to save storage space and network bandwidth. However, the occurrence of deduplication can be easily identified by monitoring and analyzing network traffic, which leads to the risk of user privacy leakage. The attacker can carry out a very dangerous side channel attack, i.e., learn-the-remaining-information (LRI) attack, to reveal users' privacy information by exploiting the side channel of network traffic in deduplication. Existing work addresses the LRI attack at the cost of the high bandwidth efficiency of deduplication. In order to address this problem, we propose a simple yet effective scheme, called randomized redundant chunk scheme (RRCS), to significantly mitigate the risk of the LRI attack while maintaining the high bandwidth efficiency of deduplication. The basic idea behind RRCS is to add randomized redundant chunks to mix up the real deduplication states of files used for the LRI attack, which effectively obfuscates the view of the attacker, who attempts to exploit the side channel of network traffic for the LRI attack. Our security analysis shows that RRCS could significantly mitigate the risk of the LRI attack. We implement the RRCS prototype and evaluate it by using three large-scale real-world datasets. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and efficacy of RRCS.
