Skyrmion lattices (SkL) in centrosymmetric materials typically have a magnetic period on the nanometer-scale, so that the coupling between magnetic superstructures and the underlying crystal lattice cannot be neglected. Here, we reveal the commensurate locking of a SkL to the atomic lattice in Gd$_3$Ru$_4$Al$_{12}$ via high-resolution resonant elastic x-ray scattering (REXS). Weak easy-plane magnetic anisotropy, demonstrated here by a combination of ferromagnetic resonance and REXS, penalizes placing a skyrmion core on a site of the atomic lattice. Under these conditions, a commensurate SkL, locked to the crystal lattice, is stable at finite temperatures -- but gives way to a competing incommensurate ground state upon cooling. We discuss the role of Umklapp-terms in the Hamiltonian for the formation of this lattice-locked state, its magnetic space group, the role of slight discommensurations, or (line) defects in the magnetic texture, and contrast our findings with the case of SkLs in noncentrosymmetric material platforms., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, additional SI included (19 pages, 11 figures, 1 table)

Optical control of crystal structures is a promising route to change physical properties including topological nature of a targeting material. Time-resolved X-ray diffraction measurements using the X-ray free-electron laser are performed to study the ultrafast lattice dynamics of VTe$_2$, which shows a unique charge-density-wave (CDW) ordering coupled to the topological surface states as a first-order phase transition. A significant oscillation of the CDW amplitude mode is observed at a superlattice reflection as well as Bragg reflections. The frequency of the oscillation is independent of the fluence of the pumping laser, which is prominent to the CDW ordering of the first-order phase transition. Furthermore, the timescale of the photoinduced 1$T^{\prime\prime}$ to 1$T$ phase transition is independent of the period of the CDW amplitude mode.

Lattice and electronic states of thin FeSe films on LaAlO$_3$ substrates are investigated in the vicinity of the nematic phase transition. No evidence of structural phase transition is found by x-ray diffraction below $T^\ast \sim 90$ K, while results obtained from resistivity measurement and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy clearly show the appearance of a nematic state. These results indicate formation of a pure nematic state in the iron-based superconductor and provide conclusive evidence that the nematic state originates from the electronic degrees of freedom. This pure nematicity in the thin film implies difference in the electron-lattice interaction from bulk FeSe crystals. FeSe films provide valuable playgrounds for observing the pure response of "bare" electron systems free from the electron-lattice interaction, and should make important contribution to investigate nematicity and its relationship with superconductivity.

Incomplete cancellation of collinear antiparallel spins gives rise to ferrimagnetism. Even if the oppositely polarized spins are owing to the equal number of a single magnetic element having the same valence state, in principle, a ferrimagnetic state can still arise from the crystallographic inequivalence of the host ions. However, experimental identification of such a state as ferrimagnetic is not straightforward because of the tiny magnitude expected for M and the requirement for a sophisticated technique to differentiate similar magnetic sites. We report a synchrotron-based resonant x-ray investigation at the Fe L2,3 edges on an epitaxial film of CaFe2O4, which exhibits two magnetic phases with similar energies. We find that while one phase of CaFe2O4 is antiferromagnetic, the other one is ferrimagnetic with an antiparallel arrangement of an equal number of spins between two distinct crystallographic sites with very similar local coordination environments. Our results further indicate two distinct origins of an overall minute M; one is intrinsic, from distinct Fe3+ sites, and the other one is extrinsic, arising from defective Fe2+ likely forming weakly-coupled ferrimagnetic clusters. These two origins are uncorrelated and have very different coercive fields. Hence, this work provides a direct experimental demonstration of ferrimagnetism solely due to crystallographic inequivalence of the Fe3+ as the origin of the weak M of CaFe2O4., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures

NaOsO$_3$ has recently attracted significant attention for the strong coupling between its electronic band structure and magnetic ordering. Here, we used time-resolved magnetic X-ray diffraction to determine the timescale of the photoinduced \afm dynamics in NaOsO$_3$. Our measurements are consistent with a sub-100~fs melting of the \afm long-range order, that occurs significantly faster than the lattice dynamics as monitored by the transient change in intensity of selected Bragg structural reflections, which instead show a decrease of intensity on a timescale of several ps., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures

Understanding ultrafast magnetization dynamics on the microscopic level is of strong current interest due to the potential for applications in information storage. In recent years, the spin-lattice coupling has been recognized to be essential for ultrafast magnetization dynamics. Magnetoelectric multiferroics of type II possess intrinsic correlations among magnetic sublattices and electric polarization (P) through spin-lattice coupling, enabling fundamentally coupled dynamics between spins and lattice. Here we report on ultrafast magnetization dynamics in a room-temperature multiferroic hexaferrite possessing ferrimagnetic and antiferromagnetic sublattices, revealed by time-resolved resonant x-ray diffraction. A femtosecond above-bandgap excitation triggers a coherent magnon in which the two magnetic sublattices entangle and give rise to a transient modulation of P. A novel microscopic mechanism for triggering the coherent magnon in this ferrimagnetic insulator based on the spin-lattice coupling is proposed. An ultrafast atomic motion of a photo-induced coherent phonon of bismuth at low temperatures was directly observed with time-resolved x-ray diffraction. A cryostat with a window that is transparent to both optical lasers and x-rays enabled versatile diffraction measurements in a wide temperature range including below 10 K. It is found that an atomic displacement in a fully symmetric A$_{\mathrm{1g}}$ phonon mode is suppressed at low temperatures. This result indicates the displacive excitation process is suppressed in the phonon generation with decreasing temperature.

The simultaneous condensation of electronic and structural degrees of freedom gives rise to new states of matter, including superconductivity and charge-density-wave formation. When exciting such a condensed system, it is commonly assumed that the ultrafast laser pulse disturbs primarily the electronic order, which in turn destabilizes the atomic structure. Contrary to this conception, we show here that structural destabilization of few atoms causes melting of the macroscopic ordered charge-density wave in 1T-TiSe2. Using ultrafast pump-probe non-resonant and resonant X-ray diffraction, we observe full suppression of the Se 4p orbital order and the atomic structure at excitation energies more than one order of magnitude below the suggested excitonic binding energy. Complete melting of the charge-density wave occurs 4-5 times faster than expected from a purely electronic charge-screening process, strongly suggesting a structurally assisted breakup of excitonic correlations. Our experimental data clarifies several questions on the intricate coupling between structural and electronic order in stabilizing the charge-density-wave in 1T-TiSe2. The results further show that electron-phonon-coupling can lead to different, energy dependent phase-transition pathways in condensed matter systems, opening new possibilities in the conception of non-equilibrium phenomena at the ultrafast scale., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures

The control of materials properties with light is a promising approach towards the realization of faster and smaller electronic devices. With phases that can be controlled via strain, pressure, chemical composition or dimensionality, nickelates are good candidates for the development of a new generation of high performance and low consumption devices. Here we analyze the photoinduced dynamics in a single crystalline NdNiO$_3$ film upon excitation across the electronic gap. Using time-resolved reflectivity and resonant x-ray diffraction, we show that the pump pulse induces an insulator-to-metal transition, accompanied by the melting of the charge order. Finally we compare our results to similar studies in manganites and show that the same model can be used to describe the dynamics in nickelates, hinting towards a unified description of these photoinduced phase transitions., Comment: 17 pages, 6 figures

Measuring how the magnetic correlations throughout the Brillouin zone evolve in a Mott insulator as charges are introduced dramatically improved our understanding of the pseudogap, non-Fermi liquids and high $T_C$ superconductivity. Recently, photoexcitation has been used to induce similarly exotic states transiently. However, understanding how these states emerge has been limited because of a lack of available probes of magnetic correlations in the time domain, which hinders further investigation of how light can be used to control the properties of solids. Here we implement magnetic resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at a free electron laser, and directly determine the magnetization dynamics after photo-doping the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We find that the non-equilibrium state 2~ps after the excitation has strongly suppressed long-range magnetic order, but hosts photo-carriers that induce strong, non-thermal magnetic correlations. The magnetism recovers its two-dimensional (2D) in-plane N\'eel correlations on a timescale of a few ps, while the three-dimensional (3D) long-range magnetic order restores over a far longer, fluence-dependent timescale of a few hundred ps. By means of circularly polarized x-ray beam at Dy L3 and Fe K absorption edges, the chiral structure of the electric quadrupole was investigated for a single crystal of DyFe3(BO3)4 in which both Dy and Fe ions are arranged in spiral manners. The integrated intensity of the resonant x- ray diffraction of space-group forbidden reflections 004 and 005 is interpreted within the electric dipole transitions from Dy 2p3 to 5d and Fe 1s to 4p, respectively. We have confirmed that the 2 handedness of the crystal observed at Dy L3 and Fe K edges is consistent with that observed at Dy M5 edge in the previous study. By analyzing the azimuth scans of the diffracted intensity, the electronic quadrupole moments of Dy 5d and Fe 4p are derived. The temperature profiles of the integrated intensity of 004 at the Dy L3 and the Fe K edges are similar to those of Dy-O and Fe-O bond lengths, while that at the Dy M5 edge does not. The results indicate that the helix chiral orientations of quadrupole moments due to Dy 5d and Fe 4p electrons are more strongly affected by the crystal fields than Dy 4f.

We investigate the structural and magnetic origins of the unusual ultrafast second-harmonicgeneration (SHG) response of femtosecond-laser-excited nickel oxide (NiO) previously attributed to oscillatory reorientation dynamics of the magnetic structure induced by d-d excitations. Using time-resolved x-ray diffraction from the (3/2 3/2 3/2) magnetic planes, we show that changes in the magnitude of the magnetic structure factor following ultrafast optical excitation are limited to $\Delta/$ = 1.5% in the first 30 ps. An extended investigation of the ultrafast SHG response reveals a strong dependence on wavelength as well as characteristic echoes, both of which give evidence for an acoustic origin of the dynamics. We therefore propose an alternative mechanism for the SHG response based on perturbations of the nonlinear susceptibility via optically induced strain in a spatially confined medium. In this model, the two observed oscillation periods can be understood as the times required for an acoustic strain wave to traverse one coherence length of the SHG process in either the collinear or anti-collinear geometries., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures

We present an effective system for simulating dust continuum observations by radiative transfer simulations. By using workflow management system RENKEI-WFT, we utilized distributed computing resources and automated a sequence of computational tasks required for radiative transfer modeling, namely, main radiative transfer simulations, pre-/post-processes, and data transfer between computing resources. Our system simultaneously executes a lot of radiative transfer simulations with different input parameters on distributed computing resources. This capability of our system enables us to conduct effective research by radiative transfer simulation. As a demonstration of our system, we simulated dust continuum observations of protoplanetary disk. We performed hydrodynamic simulation modeling photoevaporating protoplanetary disk irradiated by ultra violet radiation from nearby massive stars. Results of this hydrodynamic simulation were used as input data for radiative transfer simulations. CuFeO_2 is one of the multiferroic materials and is the first case that the electric polarization is not explained by the magnetostriction model or the spin-current model. We have studied this material using soft x-ray resonant diffraction and found that superlattice reflection 0, 1 - 2q, 0 appears in the ferroelectric and incommensurate magnetic ordered phase at the Fe L2,3 absorption edges and moreover that the rotation of the x-ray polarization such as from {\sigma} to {\pi} or from {\pi} to {\sigma} is allowed at this reflection. These findings definitely provide direct evidence that the 3d orbital state of Fe ions has a long range order in the ferroelectric state and support the spin-dependent d-p hybridization mechanism., Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures
