In this paper we review some aspects of the theory of magnetic threaded disks. We discuss in particular the equations that determine the position of the inner disk boundary by using different prescriptions for the neutron star-accretion disk interaction. We apply the results to several accretion powered X-ray pulsars that showed both quasi-periodic oscillations in their X-ray flux and spin-up/spin-down torque reversals. Under the hypothesis that the beat-frequency model is applicable to the quasi-periodic oscillations, we show that these sources provide an excellent opportunity to test models of the disk-magnetosphere interaction. A comparison is carried out between the magnetospheric radius obtained with all the prescriptions used in threaded disk models; this shows that none of those prescriptions is able to reproduce the combination of quasi-periodic oscillations and torque behaviour observed for different X-ray luminosity levels in the X-ray pulsars in the present sample. This suggests that the problem of accretion disk threading by stellar magnetic field is still lacking a comprehensive solution. We present a semi-analytical kinetic calculation of the process of non-linear diffusive shock acceleration (NLDSA) which includes the magnetic field amplification due to cosmic ray induced streaming instability, the dynamical reaction of the amplified magnetic field and the possible effects of turbulent heating. The approach is specialized to parallel shock waves and the parameters we chose are the ones appropriate to forward shocks in Supernova Remnants. Our calculation allows us to show that the net effect of the amplified magnetic field is to enhance the maximum momentum of accelerated particles while reducing the concavity of the spectra, with respect to the standard predictions of NLDSA. This is mainly due to the dynamical reaction of the amplified field on the shock, which noticeably reduces the modification of the shock precursor. The total compression factors which are obtained for parameters typical of supernova remnants are $R_{tot}\sim 7-10$, in good agreement with the values inferred from observations. The strength of the magnetic field produced through excitation of streaming instability is found in good agreement with the values inferred for several remnants if the thickness of the X-ray rims are interpreted as due to severe synchrotron losses of high energy electrons. We study the evolution of an accelerating hyperrelativistic shock under the presence of upstream inhomogeneities wrinkling the discontinuity surface. The investigation is conducted by means of numerical simulations using the PLUTO code for astrophysical fluid dynamics. The reliability and robustness of the code are demonstrated against well known results coming from the linear perturbation theory. We then follow the nonlinear evolution of two classes of perturbing upstream atmospheres and conclude that no lasting wrinkle can be preserved indefinitely by the flow. Finally we derive analytically a description of the geometrical effects of a turbulent upstream ambient on the discontinuity surface., Comment: 54 Pages, 24 Figures. We determine the spectrum of particles accelerated at shocks with arbitrary speed and arbitrary scattering properties for different choices of the equation of state of the downstream plasma. More specifically we consider the effect of energy exchange between the electron and proton thermal components downstream, and the effect of generation of a turbulent magnetic field in the downstream plasma. The slope of the spectrum turns out to be appreciably affected by all these phenomena, especially in the Newtonian and trans-relativistic regime, while in the ultra-relativistic limit the universal spectrum $s\approx 4.3$ seems to be a very solid prediction., Comment: 21 pages, 8 figs

Fast Quasi-Periodic Oscillations (QPOs, frequencies of $\sim 20 - 1840$ Hz) have been recently discovered in the ringing tail of giant flares from Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs), when the luminosity was of order $10^{41}-10^{41.5}$ erg/s. These oscillations persisted for many tens of seconds, remained coherent for up to hundreds of cycles and were observed over a wide range of rotational phases of the neutron stars believed to host SGRs. Therefore these QPOs must have originated from a compact, virtually non-expanding region inside the star's magnetosphere, emitting with a very moderate degree of beaming (if at all). The fastest QPOs imply a luminosity variation of $\Delta L/\Delta t \simeq 6 \times 10^{43}$ erg s$^{-2}$, the largest luminosity variation ever observed from a compact source. It exceeds by over an order of magnitude the usual Cavallo-Fabian-Rees (CFR) luminosity variability limit for a matter-to-radiation conversion efficiency of 100%. We show that such an extreme variability can be reconciled with the CFR limit if the emitting region is immersed in a magnetic field $\gtrsim 10^{15}$ G at the star surface, providing independent evidence for the superstrong magnetic fields of magnetars., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, Part I

A mathematical approach to investigate particle acceleration at shock waves moving at arbitrary speed in a medium with arbitrary scattering properties was first discussed in (Vietri 2003) and (Blasi & Vietri 2005}. We use this method and somewhat extend it in order to include the effect of a large scale magnetic field in the upstream plasma, with arbitrary orientation with respect to the direction of motion of the shock. We also use this approach to investigate the effects of anisotropic scattering on spectra and anisotropies of the distribution function of the accelerated particles., Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We analyze high resolution spectroscopic observations of the optical afterglow of GRB050730, obtained with UVES@VLT about hours after the GRB trigger. The spectrum shows that the ISM of the GRB host galaxy at z = 3.967 is complex, with at least five components contributing to the main absorption system. We detect strong CII*, SiII*, OI* and FeII* fine structure absorption lines associated to the second and third component. For the first three components we derive information on the relative distance from the site of the GRB explosion. Component 1, which has the highest redshift, does not present any fine structure nor low ionization lines; it only shows very high ionization features, such as CIV and OVI, suggesting that this component is very close to the GRB site. From the analysis of low and high ionization lines and fine structure lines, we find evidences that the distance of component 2 from the site of the GRB explosion is 10-100 times smaller than that of component 3. We evaluated the mean metallicity of the z=3.967 system obtaining values about 0.01 of the solar metallicity or less. However, this should not be taken as representative of the circumburst medium, since the main contribution to the hydrogen column density comes from the outer regions of the galaxy while that of the other elements presumably comes from the ISM closer to the GRB site. Furthermore, difficulties in evaluating dust depletion correction can modify significantly these values. The mean [C/Fe] ratio agrees well with that expected by single star-formation event models. Interestingly the [C/Fe] of component 2 is smaller than that of component 3, in agreement with GRB dust destruction scenarios, if component 2 is closer than component 3 to the GRB site., Comment: 11 pages, 15 postscript figures, accepted for pubblication in A&A

Aims: We aim at detecting and determining the properties of the host galaxy of the dark GRB 050223. Methods: We use VLT optical/NIR images coupled to Swift X-ray positioning, and optical spectra of the host galaxy to measure its properties. Results: We find a single galaxy within the Swift error box of GRB 050223. It is located at z = 0.584 and its luminosity is L ~ 0.4 L*. Emission lines in the galaxy spectrum imply an intrinsic SFR > 7 Msun/yr, and a large extinction A_V > 2 mag within it. We also detect absorption lines, which reveal an underlying stellar population with an age between 40 Myr and 1.5 Gyr. Conclusions: The identification of a host galaxy with atypical properties using only the X-ray transient suggests that a bias may be present in the former sample of host galaxies. We present optical observations of the short/hard gamma-ray burst GRB 050709, the first such event with an identified optical counterpart. The object is coincident with a weak X-ray source and is located inside a galaxy at redshift z = 0.1606 +- 0.0002. Multiband photometry allowed us to study the broad-band spectral energy distribution. Late-time monitoring places strong limits on any supernova simultaneous with the GRB. The host galaxy is not of early type. Spectra show that the dominant stellar population is relatively young (~ 1 Gyr), and that ongoing star formation is present at a level of 2-3 (L/L*) Msun/yr. This is at least 2 orders of magnitude larger than that observed in the elliptical hosts of the short GRB 050509B and GRB 050724. This shows that at least some short GRBs originate in a young population. Short/hard GRB models based on the merger of a binary degenerate system are compatible with the host galaxy characteristics, although there is still the possibility of a connection between young stars and at least a fraction of such events., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters

[Abridged] Very recently, relations between the peak energy of Gamma-Ray Burst burst spectra, the isotropic-equivalent energy of the burst, and the radiated energy of the burst have been found. In a way that is exactly analogous to the way in which the relation between the peak luminosity and the rate of decline of the light curve of Type Ia supernovae can be used to make Type Ia supernovae excellent standard candles for cosmology, so too, the relations between Epk, Eiso, and Egamma point toward a methodology for using GRBs as excellent standard candles for cosmology. In addition, GRBs occur over the broad redshift range from z=0.1 to at least z=4.5, and both they and their afterglows are easily detectable out to z > 8. Thus GRBs show great promise as cosmological ``yardsticks'' to measure the rate of expansion of the universe over time, and therefore the properties of dark energy (i.e., Omega_M, Omega_Lambda, w_0, and w_a). We describe a concept for a possible MIDEX-class mission dedicated to using GRBs to constrain the properties of dark energy that would obtain these quantities for > 800 bursts in the redshift range 0.1 >~ z <~ 10 during a 2-year mission. This burst sample would enable both Omega_M and w_0 to be determined to +/- 0.07 and +/- 0.06 (68% CL), respectively, and w_a to be significantly constrained., Comment: White paper submitted to the Dark Energy Task Force. 37 pages

Using the narrow clustering of the geometrically corrected gamma-ray energies released by gamma-ray bursts, we investigate the possibility of using these sources as standard candles to probe cosmological parameters such as the matter density Omega_m and the cosmological constant energy density Omega_Lambda. By simulating different samples of gamma-ray bursts, we find that Omega_m can be determined with accuracy ~7% with data from 300 sources. We also show that, if Omega = 1 is due to a quintessence field, some of the models proposed in the literature may be discriminated from a Universe with cosmological constant, by a similar-sized sample of gamma-ray bursts., Comment: 21 pages, 4 figures

We present the first high resolution (R=20000--45000, corresponding to 14 km/s at 4200A to 6.6 km/s at 9000A) observations of the optical afterglow of Gamma Ray Bursts. GRB020813 and GRB021004 were observed by UVES@VLT 22.19 hours and 13.52 hours after the trigger, respectively. These spectra show that the inter--stellar matter of the GRB host galaxies is complex, with many components contributing to each main absorption system, and spanning a total velocity range of up to about 3000 km/s. Several narrow components are resolved down to a width of a few tens of km/s. In the case of GRB021004 we detected both low and high ionization lines. Combined with photoionization results obtained with CLOUDY, the ionization parameters of the various systems are consistent with a remarkably narrow range with no clear trend with system velocity. This can be interpreted as due to density fluctuations on top of a regular R^-2 wind density profile., Comment: Most figure improved, a few typos corrected, added a new subsection. ApJ in press

We report on observation results of the prompt X- and gamma-ray emission from GRB011211. This event was detected with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and one of the Wide Field Cameras aboard the BeppoSAX satellite. The optical counterpart to the GRB was soon identified and its redshift determined (z = 2.140), while with the XMM-Newton satellite, the X-ray afterglow emission was detected. Evidence of soft X-ray emission lines was reported by Reeves et al. (2002), but not confirmed by other authors. In investigating the spectral evolution of the prompt emission we find the possible evidence of a transient absorption feature at 6.9^{+0.6}_{-0.5} keV during the rise of the primary event. The significance of the feature is derived with non parametric tests and numerical simulations, finding a chance probability which ranges from 3x10^{-3} down to 4x10^{-4}. The feature shows a Gaussian profile and an equivalent width of 1.2^{+0.5}_{-0.6} keV. We discuss our results and their possible interpretation., Comment: 23 pages, 3 Tables, 6 Figures. In light of the recent finding of the narrow clustering of the geometrically-corrected gamma-ray energies emitted by Gamma Ray Bursts (GRBs), we investigate the possibility to use these sources as standard candles to probe cosmological parameters such as the matter density Omega_m and the cosmological constant energy density Omega_Lambda. We present the results of a VLT polarimetric monitoring campaign of the GRB 020813 optical afterglow carried out in three nights, from 0.88 to 4.20 days after the gamma-ray event. The mean values of the degree of linear polarization (P) and its position angle (Theta) resulting from our campaign are =1.18+/-0.10% and Theta = 148.7+/-2.3 deg after correcting for Galactic interstellar polarization. Our VLT data set is most naturally described by a constant degree of linear polarization and position angle, nonetheless a slow Theta evolution cannot be entirely ruled out by our data. The VLT monitoring campaign did not reveal either a significant Theta rotation respect to the Keck spectropolarimetric observations performed ~0.25 days after the GRB (Barth et al. 2003). However, is a factor of two lower than the polarization degree measured from Keck. Additionally, the VLT polarization data allowed us to construct an accurate V-band light curve. The V-band photometric data revealed a smooth light curve with a break located between the last Keck and our first VLT polarimetric measurement, 0.33 < t_(break, V) < 0.88 days after the GRB. The typical magnitude fluctuations of the VLT V-band lightcurve are 0.003 mag, 0.010 mag and 0.016 mag for our three observing nights, respectively. Recent observations of X-ray afterglows reveal the presence of a redshifted Kalpha iron line in emission in four bursts. In GRB 991216, the line was detected by the low energy grating of Chandra, which showed the line to be broad, with a full width of ~15,000 km/s. These observations indicate the presence of a >1 solar mass of iron rich material in the close vicinity of the burst, most likely a supernova remnant. The fact that such strong lines are observed less than a day after the trigger strongly limits the size of the remnant, which must be very compact. If the remnant had the observed velocity since the supernova explosion, its age would be less than a month. In this case nickel and cobalt have not yet decayed into iron. The absorption feature detected in the prompt X-ray emission of GRB 990705 bears important consequences. We investigate different production mechanisms and we conclude that the absorbing material cannot be very close to the burster and is likely to be moderately clumped. These properties challenge any model in which the burst explodes in coincidence with the core-collapse of a massive rotating star. We show that the straightforward interpretation of the absorption feature as a photoionization K edge of neutral iron faces a severe problem in that it requires a huge amount of iron in the close vicinity of the burster. We then discuss an alternative scenario, in which iron ions are kept in a high ionization state by the burst flux, and the absorption feature is produced by resonant scattering from hydrogen-like iron, broadened by a range outflow velocities. In this case the physical conditions and geometry of the absorbing material are fully consistent with the presence of a young supernova remnant surrounding the burst site at a radius R ~ 10^{16} cm. We report on the prompt X- and gamma-ray observations of GRB990712 with the BeppoSAX Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor and Wide Field Camera No. 2. Due to Sun constraints, we could not perform a follow-up observation with the BeppoSAX Narrow Field Instruments. The light curve of the prompt emission shows two pulses and a total duration of about 40s in X-rays. In gamma-rays the event is even shorter. The 2-700 keV spectral emission with time shows a discontinuity in the peak energy Ep of the E F(E) spectrum: Ep is above our energy passband during the first pulse and goes down to ~10 keV during the second pulse. Another peculiarity is noted in this event for the first time: the possible evidence of a 2s duration emission feature during the tail of the first pulse. The feature is consistent with either a Gaussian profile with centroid energy of 4.5 keV or a blackbody spectrum with kTbb ~1.3 keV. We discuss the possible origin of the feature. We report the discovery of a transient equivalent hydrogen column density with an absorption edge at ~3.8 kiloelectron volts in the spectrum of the prompt x-ray emission of gamma-ray burst (GRB) 990705. This feature can be satisfactorily modeled with a photoelectric absorption by a medium located at a redshift of ~0.86 and with an iron abundance of ~75 times the solar one. The transient behavior is attributed to the strong ionization produced in the circumburst medium by the GRB photons. The high iron abundance points to the existence of a burst environment enriched by a supernova along the line of sight. The supernova explosion is estimated to have occurred about 10 years before the burst. We report on the discovery of two emission features observed in the X-ray spectrum of the afterglow of the gamma-ray burst (GRB) of 16 Dec. 1999 by the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. These features are identified with the Ly$_{\alpha}$ line and the narrow recombination continuum by hydrogenic ions of iron at a redshift $z=1.00\pm0.02$, providing an unambiguous measurement of the distance of a GRB. Line width and intensity imply that the progenitor of the GRB was a massive star system that ejected, before the GRB event, $\approx 0.01 \Ms$ of iron at a velocity $\approx 0.1 c$, probably by a supernova explosion., Comment: 11 pages,2 fig.s, link to the published paper in Science, 290, 955 (2000) through http://www.ias.rm.cnr.it/grb/gb991216.html

We report the detection (3 sigma significance level) of a strong iron emission line in the X-ray spectrum of the afterglow of GRB 000214 (``Valentine's Day Burst'') observed by BeppoSAX. An emission line feature was observed with a centroid energy of 4.7+/-0.2 keV which, if interpreted as K-alpha emission from hydrogen-like iron, corresponds to a redshift of z=0.47. The observed intensity (EW ~2 keV) and duration (tens of hours) of the line give information on the distance, from the burst region, of the emitting material (R>3x10^15 cm) and its mass (M>1.4 solar mass). Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) afterglows close to their peak intensity are among the brightest X-ray sources in the sky. Despite their fast power-law like decay, when fluxes are integrated from minutes up to hours after the GRB event, the corresponding number counts (logN-logF relation) far exceeds that of any other high redshift (z>0.5) source, the flux of which is integrated over the same time interval. We discuss how to use X-ray afterglows of GRBs as distant beacons to probe the warm (10^5 K=300) would be very well suited to exploit the new diagnostic and study the physical conditions in the Universe at the critical moment when structure is being formed., Comment: ApJ Letters in press

We discuss observations of the prompt X and gamma-ray emission and X-ray afterglow from GRB981226. This event has the weakest gamma-ray peak flux detected with the Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor. It shows an isolated X-ray precursor and the highest X-ray to gamma-ray fluence ratio measured thus far with the Wide Field Cameras. The event was followed up with the Narrow Field Instruments, and the X-ray afterglow was detected up to 10 keV. The afterglow flux is observed to rise from a level below the sensitivity of the MECS/LECS telescopes up to a peak flux of (5 +/-1) * 10^(-13) erg cm-2 s-1, in the 2-10 keV energy band. This rise is followed by a decline according to a power law with index of 1.31 (+0.44,-0.39). We report the possible detection (99.3% of statistical significance) of redshifted Fe iron line emission in the X-ray afterglow of Gamma-ray burst GRB970508 observed by BeppoSAX. Its energy is consistent with the redshift of the putative host galaxy determined from optical spectroscopy. In contrast to the fairly clean environment expected in the merging of two neutron stars, the observed line properties would imply that the site of the burst is embedded in a large mass of material ($>0.5 \Ms$), consistent with pre-explosion ejecta of a very massive star. This material could be related with the outburst observed in the afterglow 1 day after the GRB and with the spectral variations measured during this phase. We did not find evidence of Fe line in two other GRB with known redshift (GB971214 and GB980613), but we note that the upper limits are of the same order of the intensity measured in GB97508 and that none of these afterglows shows rebursting activity., Comment: 2 pages, 1 figure, proc. of Gamma-Ray Bursts in the Afterglow Era, Nov. 1998, Rome, F. Models for gamma-ray burst afterglows envisage an hyper-relativistic fireball that is decelerated in the ambient medium around the explosion site. This interaction produces a shock wave which amplifies the magnetic field and accelerates electrons to relativistic energies, setting the conditions for an efficient production of synchrotron photons. If produced in a region of large-scale ordered magnetic field, synchrotron radiation can be highly polarized. The optical transient associated with GRB 990510 was observed ~18.5 hr after the event and linear polarization in the R band was measured at a level of 1.7 +/- 0.2 %. This is the first detection of linear polarization in the optical afterglow of a gamma-ray burst. We exclude that this polarization is due to dust in the interstellar material, either in our Galaxy or in the host galaxy of the gamma-ray burst. These results provide important new evidence in favor of the synchrotron origin of the afterglow emission, and constrains the geometry of the fireball and/or magnetic field lines., Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figures, accepted for publication in A&A Letters Raw data available upon request

Recently, BeppoSAX and ASCA have reported an unusual resurgence of soft X-ray emission during the afterglows of GRB 970508 and GRB 970828, together with marginal evidence for the existence of Fe-lines in both objects. We consider the implications of the existence of a torus of iron-rich material surrounding the sites of gamma ray bursts as would be expected in the SupraNova model; in particular, we show that the fireball will quickly hit this torus, and bring it to a temperature ~3x10^7 K. Bremsstrahlung emission from the heated up torus will cause a resurgence of the soft X-ray emission with all expected characteristics (flux level, duration and spectral hardening with time) identical to those observed during the reburst. Also, thermal emission from the torus will account for the observed iron line flux. These events are also observable, for instance by new missions such as SWIFT, when beaming away from our line sight makes us miss the main burst, as Fast (soft) X-ray Transients, with durations ~10^3 s, and fluences ~10^-7-10^-4 erg cm^-2. We report the possible detection (99.3% of statistical significance) of redshifted Fe iron line emission in the X-ray afterglow of Gamma-ray burst GRB970508 observed by BeppoSAX. Its energy is consistent with the redshift of the putative host galaxy determined from optical spectroscopy. The line disappeared about 1 day after the burst. We have also analyzed the spectral variability during the outburst event that characterizes the X-ray afterglow of this GRB. The spectrum gets harder during the flare, turning to steep when the flux decreases. The variability, intensity and width of the line indicate that the emitting region should have a mass approximately greater than 0.5 solar masses (assuming the iron abundance similar to its solar value), a size of about 3 times 10^15 cm, be distributed anisotropically, and be moving with sub-relativistic speed. In contrast to the fairly clean environment expected in the merging of two neutron stars, the observed line properties would imply that the site of the burst is embedded in a large mass of material, consistent with pre-explosion ejecta of a very massive star. We compute exactly the Lense-Thirring precession frequency for point masses in the Kerr metric, for arbitrary black hole mass and specific angular momentum. We show that this frequency, for point masses at or close to the innermost stable orbit, and for holes with moderate to extreme rotation, is less than, but comparable to the rotation frequency. Thus, if the quasi periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed in the modulation of the X-ray flux from some black holes candidates are due to Lense-Thirring precession of orbiting material, we predict that a separate, distinct QPO ought to be observed in each object., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. Until recently the positions of gamma ray bursts were not sufficiently well known within a short timescale to localize and identify them with known celestial sources. Following the historical detection of the X-ray afterglow of the burst GRB970228, extending from 30 s to 3 days after the main peak, by the Beppo-SAX satellite and that of an optical transient 21 hr after the burst, we report here the detection of the same optical transient, in images obtained only 16 hours after the burst., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters, Springer LateX needed

As a first step of a program aimed to the detection of dark matter (or radial variations of M/L) in early-type galaxies, we report deep spectroscopic observations of the bulge-dominated edge-on S0 galaxy NGC 3115, made at ESO, La Silla, using EFOSC at the 3.6m telescope and EMMI at NTT. Such observations allow measurements of the rotational velocity out to 1.8 a_e (effective radii) from the galaxy center, where the surface brightness is \mu_B ~ 24 mag arcsec**-2. The rotation curve quickly reaches an asymptotic value, v_f ~ 260 km/s, with only marginal indication of systematic decline within the range of our observations. The line-of-sight velocity dispersion has also been measured; it decreases steeply from a rather high central value and flattens out (<\sigma> ~ 100 km/s) within our observing range (a ~< 1.3 a_e). Models built on these data and simple dynamical arguments show that the M/L of NGC 3115 must thus be increasing from M/L = 6 (in solar units) in the inner regions (~ 1 a_e) to at least M/L >= 10 in the outermost regions (~ 2 a_e)., Comment: Latex + L-AA Vers. 3.0, figures available from the authors

The Large Observatory For x-ray Timing (LOFT) is a mission concept which was proposed to ESA as M3 and M4 candidate in the framework of the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. Thanks to the unprecedented combination of effective area and spectral resolution of its main instrument and the uniquely large field of view of its wide field monitor, LOFT will be able to study the behaviour of matter in extreme conditions such as the strong gravitational field in the innermost regions close to black holes and neutron stars and the supra-nuclear densities in the interiors of neutron stars. The science payload is based on a Large Area Detector (LAD, is greater than 8m2 effective area, 2-30 keV, 240 eV spectral resolution, 1 degree collimated field of view) and a Wide Field Monitor (WFM, 2-50 keV, 4 steradian field of view, 1 arcmin source location accuracy, 300 eV spectral resolution). The WFM is equipped with an on-board system for bright events (e.g., GRB) localization. The trigger time and position of these events are broadcast to the ground within 30 s from discovery. In this paper we present the current technical and programmatic status of the mission.

It is proposed here that a significant fraction of BL Lac objects are optically violently variable quasars whose continuum emission has been greatly amplified, relative to the line emission, by pointlike gravitational lenses in intervening galaxies. Several anomalous physical and statistical properties of BL Lacs can be understood on the basis of this model, which is immediately testable on the basis of absorption line studies and by direct imaging.

The method of Schmidt and Green (1983) for calculating the luminosity function of quasars is combined with gravitational-lensing theory to compute expected properties of lensed systems. Multiple quasar images produced by galaxies are of order 0.001 of the observed quasars, with the numbers over the whole sky calculated to be (0.86, 120, 1600) to limiting B magnitudes of (16, 19, 22). The amount of 'false evolution' is small except for an interesting subset of apparently bright, large-redshift objects for which minilensing by starlike objects may be important. Some of the BL Lac objects may be in this category, with the galaxy identified as the parent object really a foreground object within which stars have lensed a background optically violent variable quasar.
