The observation of high-$T_c$ superconductivity (HTSC) in concomitant with pressure-induced orthorhombic-tetragonal structural transition in the bilayer La$_{3}$Ni$_2$O$_7$ has sparked hopes of achieving HTSC by stabilizing the tetragonal phase at ambient pressure. To mimic the effect of external physical pressures, the application of chemical pressure via replacing La$^3$$^+$ with smaller rare-earth R$^3$$^+$ has been considered as a potential route. Here we clarify the distinct effects of chemical and physical pressures on the structural transition of bilayer nickelates through a combined experimental and theoretical investigation. Contrary to general expectations, we find that substitutions of smaller R$^3$$^+$ for La$^3$$^+$ in La$_{3-x}$R$_x$Ni$_2$O$_{7-\delta}$, despite of an overall lattice contraction, produce stronger orthorhombic structural distortions and thus require higher pressures to induce the structural transition. We established a quantitative relationship between the critical pressure $P_c$ for structural transition and the average size of $A$-site cations. A linear extrapolation of $P_c$ versus <$r_A$> yields a putative critical value of <$r_A$>$_c$ ~ 1.23 angstrom for $P_c$ ~ 1 bar. The negative correlation between $P_c$ and <$r_A$> indicates that it is unlikely to reduce $P_c$ to ambient by replacing La$^3$$^+$ with smaller R$^3$$^+$ ions. Instead, partial substitution of La$^3$$^+$ with larger cations such as alkaline-earth Sr$^2$$^+$ or Ba$^2$$^+$ might be a feasible approach. The Ruddlesden-Popper (R-P) bilayer nickelate, La3Ni2O7, was recently found to show signatures of high-temperature superconductivity (HTSC) at pressures above 14 GPa. Subsequent investigations achieved zero resistance in single- and poly-crystalline samples under hydrostatic pressure conditions. Yet, obvious diamagnetic signals, the other hallmark of superconductors, are still lacking owing to the filamentary nature with low superconducting volume fraction. The presence of a novel "1313" polymorph and competing R-P phases obscured proper identification of the phase for HTSC. Thus, achieving bulk HTSC and identifying the phase at play are the most prominent tasks at present. Here, we address these issues in the praseodymium (Pr)-doped La2PrNi2O7 polycrystalline samples. We find that the substitutions of Pr for La effectively inhibits the intergrowth of different R-P phases, resulting in nearly pure bilayer structure. For La2PrNi2O7, pressure-induced orthorhombic-to-tetragonal structural transition takes place at Pc ~ 11 GPa, above which HTSC emerges gradually upon further compression. The superconducting transition temperatures at 18-20 GPa reach Tconset = 82.5 K and Tczero = 60 K, which are the highest values among known nickelate superconductors. More importantly, bulk HTSC was testified by detecting clear diamagnetic signals below ~75 K corresponding to an estimated superconducting volume fraction ~ 57(5)% at 20 GPa. Our results not only resolve the existing controversies but also illuminate directions for exploring bulk HTSC in the bilayer nickelates.

Following the recent report by Dasenbrock-Gammon et al. (2023) of near-ambient superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium trihydride (LuH3-{\delta}N{\epsilon}), significant debate has emerged surrounding the composition and interpretation of the observed sharp resistance drop. Here, we meticulously revisit these claims through comprehensive characterization and investigations. We definitively identify the reported material as lutetium dihydride (LuH2), resolving the ambiguity surrounding its composition. Under similar conditions (270-295 K and 1-2 GPa), we replicate the reported sharp decrease in electrical resistance with a 30% success rate, aligning with Dasenbrock-Gammon et al.'s observations. However, our extensive investigations reveal this phenomenon to be a novel, pressure-induced metal-to-metal transition intrinsic to LuH2, distinct from superconductivity. Intriguingly, nitrogen doping exerts minimal impact on this transition. Our work not only elucidates the fundamental properties of LuH2 and LuH3 but also critically challenges the notion of superconductivity in these lutetium hydride systems. These findings pave the way for future research on lutetium hydride systems while emphasizing the crucial importance of rigorous verification in claims of ambient temperature superconductivity.

Recent progress on the signatures of pressure-induced high temperature superconductivity in Ruddlesden Popper (RP) nickelates (Lan+1NinO3n+1) has attracted growing interest in both theoretical calculations and experimental efforts. The fabrication of high-quality single crystalline RP nickelate thin films is critical for possible reducing the superconducting transition pressure and advancing applications in microelectronics in the future. In this study, we report the observations of an active phase transition in RP nickelate films induced by misfit strain. We found that RP nickelate films favor the perovskite structure (n = infinite) under tensile strains, while compressive strains stabilize the La3Ni2O7 (n = 2) phase. The selection of distinct phases is governed by the strain dependent formation energy and electronic configuration. In compressively strained La3Ni2O7, we experimentally determined splitting energy is ~0.2 eV and electrons prefer to occupy in-plane orbitals. First principles calculations unveil a robust coupling between strain effects and the valence state of Ni ions in RP nickelates, suggesting a dual driving force for the inevitable phase co-existence transition in RP nickelates. Our work underscores the sensitivity of RP nickelate formation to epitaxial strain, presenting a significant challenge in fabricating pure-phase RP nickelate films. The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in the Ruddlesden-Popper phase La3Ni2O7 under high pressure marks a significant breakthrough in the field of 3d transition-metal oxide superconductors. For an emerging novel class of high-Tc superconductors, it is crucial to find more analogous superconducting materials with a dedicated effort toward broadening the scope of nickelate superconductors. Here, we report on the observation of high-Tc superconductivity in the high-pressure tetragonal I4/mmm phase of La2PrNi2O7 above ~10 GPa, which is distinct from the reported orthorhombic Fmmm phase of La3Ni2O7 above 14 GPa. For La2PrNi2O7, the onset and the zero-resistance temperatures of superconductivity reach Tconset = 78.2 K and Tczero = 40 K at 15 GPa. We synthesized polycrystalline La3Ni2O7 samples by using the sol-gel method without post-annealing under high oxygen pressure, and then measured temperature-dependent resistivity under various hydrostatic pressures up to 14.5 GPa in a cubic anvil cell apparatus. We find that the density-wave-like anomaly in resistivity is progressively suppressed with increasing pressure and the resistivity drop corresponding to the onset of superconductivity emerges at pressure as low as 7 GPa. Zero resistivity is achieved at 9 GPa below 6.6 K, which increases quickly with pressure to 35.6 K at 14.5 GPa. The observation of zero-resistance state in the polycrystalline La3Ni2O7 samples under high pressures not only corroborates the recent report of superconductivity in the pressurized La3Ni2O7 crystals but also facilitates further studies on this emerging family of nickelate high-Tc superconductors., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures

Hydrogen-rich materials offer a compelling avenue towards room temperature superconductivity, albeit under ultra-high pressure. However, the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure remains elusive, due to the inherent instability of most of the hydrogen-rich materials upon pressure release. Very recently, nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride was claimed to host room temperature superconductivity under near ambient pressure but was disproven by following works. Upon decompression, nitrogen doped lutetium hydride manifests a stable metallic phase with dark blue color. Moreover, high temperature superconductivity has been reported in lutetium hydrides Lu4H23 (~71 K) under around 200 GPa. These properties engender an unprecedented opportunity, allowing for the experimental investigation of the electronic band structure intrinsic to hydrogen-rich material. In this work, using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the non-superconducting nitrogen doped lutetium hydride, we observed significant flat band and Van Hove singularity marginally below the Fermi level. These salient features, identified as critical elements, proffer potential amplifiers for the realization of heightened superconductivity, as evidenced by prior research. Our results not only unveil a confluence of potent strong correlation effects and anisotropy within the Lu-H-N compound, but also provide a prospect for engineering high temperature superconductivity through the strategic manipulation of flat band and the VHS, effectively tailoring their alignment with the Fermi energy., Comment: 26 pages, 9 figures

The stoichiometric bulk LuH2 is a paramagnetic metal with high electrical conductivity comparable to simple metals. Here we show that the resistivity of cold-pressed (CP) LuH2 samples varies sensitively upon modifying the grain size or surface conditions via the grinding process, i.e., the CP pellets made of commercially purchased LuH2 powder remain metallic but exhibit thousands of times higher resistivity, while additional grinding of LuH2 powders in air further enhances the resistivity and even results in weakly localized behaviors. For these CP samples, interestingly, we can occasionally observe abrupt resistivity drops at high temperatures, which also show dependences on magnetic fields and electrical current. Measurements of variable-temperature XRD, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat exclude the possibilities of structural, magnetic, and superconducting transitions for the observed resistivity drops. Instead, we tentatively attribute these above observations to the presence of insulating layers on the grain surface due to the modification of hydrogen stoichiometry or the pollution by oxygen/nitrogen. Percolation of the metallic grains through the insulating surfaces can explain the sudden drop in resistivity. The present results thus call for caution in asserting the resistivity drops as superconductivity and invalidate the background subtraction in analyzing the resistivity data., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

Recently, the claim of room-temperature superconductivity in nitrogen-doped lutetium hydride at near-ambient conditions has attracted tremendous attention. Criticism of the work rises shortly, while further explorations are needed to settle the dispute. One of the intriguing observations is the pressured-induced color change, which has been reproduced in the lutetium dihydride LuH2 while its mechanism remains unclear. Through optical reflectivity measurements of LuH2 in the visible to near-infrared region, we observe strong light absorption next to the sharp plasmon resonance, which continuously shifts to higher energies with increasing pressure. It gives rise to the increased reflection of red light and suppressed reflection of blue light. The sub-packetization $\ell$ and the field size $q$ are of paramount importance in the MSR array code constructions. For optimal-access MSR codes, Balaji et al. proved that $\ell\geq s^{\left\lceil n/s \right\rceil}$, where $s = d-k+1$. Rawat et al. showed that this lower bound is attainable for all admissible values of $d$ when the field size is exponential in $n$. After that, tremendous efforts have been devoted to reducing the field size. However, till now, reduction to linear field size is only available for $d\in\{k+1,k+2,k+3\}$ and $d=n-1$. In this paper, we construct the first class of explicit optimal-access MSR codes with the smallest sub-packetization $\ell = s^{\left\lceil n/s \right\rceil}$ for all $d$ between $k+1$ and $n-1$, resolving an open problem in the survey (Ramkumar et al., Foundations and Trends in Communications and Information Theory: Vol. 19: No. 4). We further propose another class of explicit MSR code constructions (not optimal-access) with even smaller sub-packetization $s^{\left\lceil n/(s+1)\right\rceil }$ for all admissible values of $d$, making significant progress on another open problem in the survey. Previously, MSR codes with $\ell=s^{\left\lceil n/(s+1)\right\rceil }$ and $q=O(n)$ were only known for $d=k+1$ and $d=n-1$. The lutetium dihydride LuH2 is stable at ambient conditions. Here we show that its color undergoes sequential changes from dark blue at ambient pressure to pink at ~2.2 GPa and then to bright red at ~4 GPa upon compression in a diamond anvil cell. Such a pressure-induced color change in LuH2 is reversible and it is very similar to that recently reported in the N-doped lutetium hydride. However, our preliminary resistance measurements on LuH2 under pressures up to 7.7 GPa evidenced no superconductivity down to 1.5 K.

Wang et al. (IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, vol. 62, no. 8, 2016) proposed an explicit construction of an $(n=k+2,k)$ Minimum Storage Regenerating (MSR) code with $2$ parity nodes and subpacketization $2^{k/3}$. The number of helper nodes for this code is $d=k+1=n-1$, and this code has the smallest subpacketization among all the existing explicit constructions of MSR codes with the same $n,k$ and $d$. In this paper, we present a new construction of MSR codes for a wider range of parameters. More precisely, we still fix $d=k+1$, but we allow the code length $n$ to be any integer satisfying $n\ge k+2$. The field size of our code is linear in $n$, and the subpacketization of our code is $2^{n/3}$. This value is slightly larger than the subpacketization of the construction by Wang et al. because their code construction only guarantees optimal repair for all the systematic nodes while our code construction guarantees optimal repair for all nodes.

L10-FePt distinguishes itself for its ultrahigh perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), which enables memory cells with sufficient thermal stability to scale down to 3 nm. The recently discovered "bulk" spin-orbit torques in L10-FePt provide an efficient and scalable way to manipulate the L10-FePt magnetization. However, the existence of external field during the switching limits its practical application, and therefore field-free switching of the L10-FePt is in highly demand. In this manuscript, we demonstrate the field-free switching of the L10-FePt by growing it on vicinal MgO (001) substrates. This method is different from previously established strategies, as it does not need to add other functional layers or create asymmetry in the film structure. We demonstrate the field-free switching is robust and can withstand strong field disturbance up to ~1 kOe. The dependence on vicinal angle, film thickness, and growth temperature demonstrated a wide operation window for the field-free switching of the L10-FePt. We confirmed that the physical origin of the field-free switching is the vicinal surface-induced the tilted anisotropy of L10-FePt. We quantitatively characterize the spin-orbit torques in the L10-FePt films, and found the spin-orbit torques are not significantly influenced by the lattice strain from vicinal substrates. We report the path from the charge density wave (CDW)-bearing superconductor CuIr2Te4 to the metal insulator transition (MIT)-bearing compound CuIr2S4 by chemical alloying with the gradual substitution of S for Te. The evolution of structural and physical properties of the CuIr2Te4-xSx polycrystalline system with the doping range from 0 to 4 is systemically examined. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) results imply CuIr2Te4-xSx in the range between 0 and 0.5 crystallizes in a NiAs defected trigonal structure, whereas it adapts to the cubic spinel structure in the doping range from 3.6 to 4 and it is a mixed phase in the doping range from 0.5 to 3.6. Unexpectedly, the resistivity and magnetization measurements reveal that small-concentration S substitution for Te can suppress the CDW transition, but it reappears around x = 0.2, and the CDW transition temperature enhances clearly as x augments in the range from 0.2 to 0.5. Besides, the superconducting critical temperature (Tc) first increases with S doping content and then decreases after reaching a maximum Tc = 2.82 K for CuIr2Te3.85S0.15. MIT order has been observed in the spinel region from 3.6 to 4 associated with TMI increasing with x increasing. Finally, the rich electronic phase diagram of temperature versus x for this CuIr2Te4-xSx system is assembled, where the superconducting dome is associated with the suppression and re-emergence of CDW as well as MIT states at the end upon sulfur substitution in the CuIr2Te4-xSx chalcogenides., Comment: 33 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables; The manuscript with the same title will be published by JOURNAL OF PHYSICS-CONDENSED MATTER

We report the crystal structure, charge-density-wave (CDW), superconductivity (SC), and ferromagnetism (FM) in CuIr2-xCrxTe4 chalcogenides. Powder x-ray diffraction (PXRD) results reveal that CuIr2-xCrxTe4 series are distinguished between two structural types and three different regions: (i) layered trigonal structure region, (ii) mixed phase regions, (iii) spinel structure region. Besides, Cr substitution for Ir site results in rich physical properties including the collapse of CDW, the formation of dome-shaped like SC, and the emergence of magnetism. Cr doping slightly elevates the superconducting critical temperature (Tsc) to its highest Tsc = 2.9 K around x = 0.06. As x increases from 0.3 to 0.4, the ferromagnetic Curie temperature (Tc) increases from 175 to 260 K. However, the Tc remains unchanged in the spinel range from 1.9 to 2. The rich nontrivial topological phases rooted in the interplay between magnetism and topology in the layered antiferromagnet EuCd2As2 have captured vast attention, especially the ideal Weyl semimetal state realized in the spin-polarized ferromagnetic (FM) structure driven by a moderate external magnetic field. In this work, combining high-pressure magnetotransport measurements, structure chracterizations and first principles calculations, we find that application of pressure can also realize the ideal Weyl state in EuCd2As2 through driving the in-plane antiferromagnetic state across an intermediate in-plane FM state then into the out-of-plane FM state. Our high-pressure angle dispersive X-ray diffraction and X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy measurements excluded structure transition and/or change of Eu2+ valence state as the sources for the magnetic phase transitions. Alternatively, the apparently reduced axial ratio (c/a) and compressed Eu-layer space distance should play important roles. Our result provides an alternative way to realize the ideal Weyl semimetal state in EuCd2As2 and would be instructive for the exploration of exotic topological properties in such layered magnetic topological phase with strongly competing magnetic exchanges by using high pressure., Comment: main text 16 pages,4 figures and SI 8 pages, 4 figures

We report the anomalous charge density wave (CDW) state evolution and dome-like superconductivity (SC) in CuIr2Te4-xSex series. Room temperature powder X ray-diffraction (PXRD) results indicate that CuIr2Te4-xSex compounds retain the same structure as the host CuIr2Te4 and the unit cell constants a and c manifest a linear decline with increasing Se content. Magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity results suggest that superconducting transition temperature (Tc) exhibits a weak dome-like variation as substituting Te by Se with the maximum Tc = 2.83 K for x = 0.1 followed by suppression in Tc and simultaneous decrease of the superconducting volume fraction. Unexpectedly, the CDW-like transition (TCDW) is suppressed with lower Se doping but re-emerges at higher doping. Meanwhile, the temperature-dependent XRD measurements show that the trigonal structure is stable at 20 K, 100 K and 300 K for the host sample and the doping composition with x = 0.5, thus we propose that the behaviour CDW-like transition arises from the disorder effect created by chemical doping and is not related to structural transition. We systematically measure the superconducting (SC) and mixed state properties of high-quality CsV3Sb5 single crystals with Tc ~ 3.5 K. We find that the upper critical field Hc2(T) exhibits a large anisotropic ratio of Hc2^(ab)/Hc2^(c) ~ 9 at zero temperature and fitting its temperature dependence requires a minimum two-band effective model. Moreover, the ratio of the lower critical field, Hc1^(ab)/Hc1^(c), is also found to be larger than 1, which indicates that the in-plane energy dispersion is strongly renormalized near Fermi energy. Both Hc1(T) and SC diamagnetic signal are found to change little initially below Tc ~ 3.5 K and then to increase abruptly upon cooling to a characteristic temperature of ~2.8 K. Furthermore, we identify a two-fold anisotropy of in-plane angular-dependent magnetoresistance in the mixed state. Interestingly, we find that, below the same characteristic T ~ 2.8 K, the orientation of this two-fold anisotropy displays a peculiar twist by an angle of 60o characteristic of the Kagome geometry. Our results suggest an intriguing superconducting state emerging in the complex environment of Kagome lattice, which, at least, is partially driven by electron-electron correlation., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures

Transformer has been widely-used in many Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks and the scaled dot-product attention between tokens is a core module of Transformer. This attention is a token-wise design and its complexity is quadratic to the length of sequence, limiting its application potential for long sequence tasks. In this paper, we propose a dimension-wise attention mechanism based on which a novel language modeling approach (namely TensorCoder) can be developed. The dimension-wise attention can reduce the attention complexity from the original $O(N^2d)$ to $O(Nd^2)$, where $N$ is the length of the sequence and $d$ is the dimensionality of head. We verify TensorCoder on two tasks including masked language modeling and neural machine translation. Compared with the original Transformer, TensorCoder not only greatly reduces the calculation of the original model but also obtains improved performance on masked language modeling task (in PTB dataset) and comparable performance on machine translation tasks.

Double emulsion formation in a hierarchical flow-focusing channel is systematically investigated using a free energy ternary lattice Boltzmann model. A three dimensional formation regime diagram is constructed based on the capillary numbers of the inner ($Ca_i$), middle ($Ca_m$) and outer ($Ca_o$) phase fluids. The results show that the formation diagram can be classified into periodic two-step region, periodic one-step region, and non-periodic region. By varying $Ca_i$ and $Ca_m$ in the two-step formation region, different morphologies are obtained, including the regular double emulsions, decussate regimes with one or two alternate empty droplets, and structures with multiple inner droplets contained in the continuous middle phase thread. Bidisperse behaviors are also frequently encountered in the two-step formation region. In the periodic one-step formation region, scaling laws are proposed for the double emulsion size and for the size ratio between the inner droplet and the overall double emulsion. Furthermore, we show that the interfacial tension ratio can greatly change the morphologies of the obtained emulsion droplets, and the channel geometry plays an important role in changing the formation regimes and the double emulsion sizes. The optical memristive switches are electrically activated optical switches that can memorize the current state. They can be used as optical latching switches in which the switching state is changed only by applying an electrical Write/Erase pulse and maintained without external power supply. We demonstrate an optical memristive switch based on a silicon MMI structure covered with nanoscale-size Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) material on top. The phase change of GST is triggered by resistive heating of the silicon layer beneath GST with an electrical pulse. Experimental results reveal that the optical transmissivity can be tuned in a controllable and repeatable manner with the maximum transmission contrast exceeding 20 dB. Partial crystallization of GST is obtained by controlling the width and amplitude of the electric pulses. Crucially, we also demonstrate that both Erase and Write operations, to and from any intermediate level, are possible with accurate control of the electrical pulses. RGB-D salient object detection aims to identify the most visually distinctive objects in a pair of color and depth images. Based upon an observation that most of the salient objects may stand out at least in one modality, this paper proposes an adaptive fusion scheme to fuse saliency predictions generated from two modalities. Specifically, we design a two-streamed convolutional neural network (CNN), each of which extracts features and predicts a saliency map from either RGB or depth modality. Then, a saliency fusion module learns a switch map that is used to adaptively fuse the predicted saliency maps. A loss function composed of saliency supervision, switch map supervision, and edge-preserving constraints is designed to make full supervision, and the entire network is trained in an end-to-end manner. Benefited from the adaptive fusion strategy and the edge-preserving constraint, our approach outperforms state-of-the-art methods on three publicly available datasets.
