Search

When creating training data for machine-learned interatomic potentials (MLIPs), it is common to create initial structures and evolve them using molecular dynamics to sample a larger configuration space. We benchmark two other modalities of evolving structures, contour exploration and dimer-method searches against molecular dynamics for their ability to produce diverse and robust training density functional theory data sets for MLIPs. We also discuss the generation of initial structures which are either from known structures or from random structures in detail to further formalize the structure-sourcing processes in the future. The polymorph-rich zirconium-oxygen composition space is used as a rigorous benchmark system for comparing the performance of MLIPs trained on structures generated from these structural evolution methods. Using Behler-Parrinello neural networks as our machine-learned interatomic potential models, we find that contour exploration and the dimer-method searches are generally superior to molecular dynamics in terms of spatial descriptor diversity and statistical accuracy., Comment: 13 pages, 15 figures, 4 tables

Infrared laser systems are vital for applications in spectroscopy, communications, and biomedical devices, where infrared nonlinear optical (NLO) crystals are required for broadband frequency down-conversion. Such crystals need to have high non-resonant NLO coefficients, a large bandgap, low absorption coefficient, phase-matchability among other competing demands, e.g., a larger bandgap leads to smaller NLO coefficients. Here, we report the successful growth of single crystals of $\gamma$-NaAsSe$_2$ that exhibit a giant second harmonic generation (SHG) susceptibility of d$_{11}$=590 pm V$^{-1}$ at 2$\mu$m wavelength; this is ~ eighteen times larger than that of commercial AgGaSe$_2$ while retaining a similar bandgap of ~1.87eV, making it an outstanding candidate for quasi-phase-matched devices utilizing d$_{11}$. In addition, $\gamma$-NaAsSe$_2$ is both Type I and Type II phase-matchable, and has a transparency range up to 16$\mu$m wavelength. We introduce a method of exploring potential energy contours in complex dynamical systems based on potentiostatic kinematics wherein the systems are evolved with minimal changes to their potential energy. We construct a simple iterative algorithm for performing potentiostatic kinematics, which uses an estimate curvature to predict new configurations space coordinates on the potential energy contour and a potentiostat term component to correct for errors in prediction. Our methods are then applied to atomic structure models using an interatomic potential for energy and force evaluations as would commonly be invoked in a molecular dynamics simulation. Using several model systems, we assess the stability and accuracy of the method on different hyperparameters in the implementation of the potentiostatic kinematics. Here we present a novel approach to control magnetic interactions in atomic-scale nanowires. Our ab initio calculations demonstrate the possibility to tune magnetic properties of Fe nanowires formed on vicinal Cu surfaces. Both intrawire and interwire magnetic exchange parameters are extracted from DFT calculations. This study suggests that the effective interwire magnetic exchange parameters exhibit Ruderman--Kittel--Kasuya--Yosida-like (RKKY) oscillations as a function of Fe interwire separation. The choice of vicinal Cu surface offers possibilities for controlling the magnetic coupling. Furthermore, an anisotropic Heisenberg model was used in Monte Carlo simulations to examine the stability of these magnetic configurations at finite temperature. The predicted critical temperatures of the Fe nanowires on Cu(422) and Cu(533) surfaces are well-above room temperature.

Exciton dissociation at heterojunctions in photovoltaic devices is not completely understood despite being fundamentally necessary to generate electrical current. One of the fundamental issues for ab initio calculations is that hybrid interfaces combining materials with Wannier-Mott excitons and those with Frenkel excitons can easily require thousands of atoms to encompass the exciton-wave function. The problem is further exacerbated by a large permittivity difference at the interface, which requires meso-scale boundary conditions to accurately predict electrostatic potentials. For these reasons, we have constructed a model of excited states at hybrid interfaces based on an effective mass Schroedinger equation. In this continuum model, carrier wave functions are represented by their envelope function rather than resolving the atomic scale variations. Electrostatic interactions are accounted for using the Poisson equation. For our model system, we use a pentacene/silicon interface. Because carrier mobility is low in pentacene relative to silicon, the hole is frozen such that it only interacts with the electron though an immobile positive charge density. The inputs to this model are as follows: dielectric permittivities, electron effective masses, interfacial width, band alignment, and the hole wave function. We find that the energetic favorability of charge transfer states relative to bulk excitons is most easily controlled by band alignment. However, when both states have similar energies, interface proximity and electrostatics become important secondary means of tuning the relative stability of these states., Comment: 22 pages, 10 figures

Exciton and polaron pair dissociation is a key functional aspect of photovoltaic devices. To improve upon the current state of interfacial transport models, we augment the existing classical models of dielectric interfaces by incorporating results from ab initio calculations, allowing us to calculate exciton and polaron binding energies more accurately. We demonstrate the predictive capabilities of this new model using two interfaces: (i) the boron subphthalocyanine chloride (SubPc) and C60 interface, which is an archetype for many organic photovoltaic devices; and (ii) pentacene and silicon (100), which represents a hybrid between organic and inorganic semiconductors. Our calculations predict that the insertion of molecular dipoles at interfaces can be used for improving polaron pair dissociation and that sharp transitions in dielectric permittivity can have a stronger effect on the polaron pair dissociation than even the electron-hole Coulomb interaction., Comment: 37 Pages, 14 Figures

Boron subphthalocyanine chloride is an electron donor material used in small molecule organic photovoltaics with an unusually large molecular dipole moment. Using first-principles calculations, we investigate enhancing the electronic and optical properties of boron subphthalocyanine chloride, by substituting the boron and chlorine atoms with other trivalent and halogen atoms in order to modify the molecular dipole moment. Gas phase molecular structures and properties are predicted with hybrid functionals. Using positions and orientations of the known compounds as the starting coordinates for these molecules, stable crystalline structures are derived following a procedure that involves perturbation and accurate total energy minimization. Electronic structure and photonic properties of the predicted crystals are computed using the GW method and the Bethe-Salpeter equation, respectively. Coupling between a magnetic impurity and an external bath can give rise to many-body quantum phenomena, including Kondo and Hund's impurity states in metals, and Yu-Shiba-Rusinov states in superconductors. While advances have been made in probing the magnetic properties of d-shell impurities on surfaces, the confinement of f orbitals makes them difficult to access directly. Here we show that a 4f driven Kondo resonance can be modulated spatially by asymmetric coupling between a metallic surface and a molecule containing a 4f-like moment. Strong hybridisation of dysprosium double-decker phthalocyanine with Cu(001) induces Kondo screening of the central magnetic moment. Misalignment between the symmetry axes of the molecule and the surface induces asymmetry in the molecule's electronic structure, spatially mediating electronic access to the magnetic moment through the Kondo resonance. The adiabatic elastic modulus is often useful in the high frequency response of materials. Unfortunately, it can be much more difficult to directly measure the adiabatic elastic modulus of material than the isothermal elastic modulus. We derive the relationship between the adiabatic and isothermal elastic tensors from the first law of thermodynamics.

Responding to the need for research in rural mathematics education, three investigators develop an initial research agenda in this area. Because this development is perhaps unique, the investigators envision the utility of this initial agenda in terms of both product and process. Drawing from 190 questions from multiple sources in mathematics, mathematics education, and rural education, the authors develop 12 questions and 48 illustrative subquestions as an initial agenda. The questions are developed both to indicate relevancy as research and to indicate dispersion among possible variations of specific questions. Four recommendations are made about the process of developing these questions involving cross-disciplinary collaboration, technical processes, and applications. This manuscript is an outgrowth of the current work by the research initiative of the Appalachian Collaborative Center for Learning, Assessment, and Instruction in Mathematics (ACCLAIM).
