Abstract

The presentation covered in this paper offers participants (i.e., teachers) an interactive, guided practice engagement with three specific instructional strategies appropriate for all learners, literacy strategies through which authentic writing and reading may be connected both to content and to the learners themselves as active creators of knowledge, not passive consumers of knowledge. The paper cites four objectives for participants, delineates three activities, and gives assessment intentions. It further explains the three activities: (1) Freudian Sentences: Prompting Content-Based Instruction; (2) Thematic Asterisks: Prompting Content-Based Knowledge Constructions; and (3) Collaborative Compositions: Prompting Content-Based Expression. The paper includes an addendum on games that serve as literacy tools. Contains a 10-item bibliography. (NKA)

2. Changing Attitudes with 'Identification Theory.'

Study designed to determine which version of a game developed in strict compliance with competing models of incentive and dissonance would be more effective in producing attitude change found that results were similar in the experimental groups. Discussion of conditions under which simulation games promote changes in attitudes focuses on identification theory as a predictor of attitude change. Three groups of 109 undergraduates evidenced attitude shifts from participation to simulation games which were structured in accordance with either the cognitive dissonance or incentive models of attitude change. Identification was suggested as an extra factor influencing attitude change. (CMV)

7. Comparison of in-flight and ground-based simulator derived flying qualities and pilot performance for approach and landing tasks

Abstract

For the case of an approach-and-landing piloting task emphasizing response to the landing flare, pilot opinion and performance parameters derived from jet transport aircraft six-degree-of-freedom ground-based and in-flight simulators were compared in order to derive data for the flight-controls/flying-qualities engineers. The data thus obtained indicate that ground simulation results tend to be conservative, and that the effect of control sensitivity is more pronounced for ground simulation. The pilot also has a greater tendency to generate pilot-induced oscillation in ground-based simulation than in flight.
