This paper investigates the influence of directed networks on decentralized stochastic non-convex optimization associated with column-stochastic mixing matrices. Surprisingly, we find that the canonical spectral gap, a widely used metric in undirected networks, is insufficient to characterize the impact of directed topology on decentralized algorithms. To overcome this limitation, we introduce a novel metric termed equilibrium skewness. This metric, together with the spectral gap, accurately and comprehensively captures the influence of column-stochastic mixing matrices on decentralized stochastic algorithms. With these two metrics, we clarify, for the first time, how the directed network topology influences the performance of prevalent algorithms such as Push-Sum and Push-Diging. Furthermore, we establish the first lower bound of the convergence rate for decentralized stochastic non-convex algorithms over directed networks. Since existing algorithms cannot match our lower bound, we further propose the MG-Push-Diging algorithm, which integrates Push-Diging with a multi-round gossip technique. MG-Push-Diging attains our lower bound up to logarithmic factors, demonstrating its near-optimal performance and the tightness of the lower bound. Numerical experiments verify our theoretical results.

In the paper, we study the non-Hermitian system under dissipation and give the effective 2*2 Hamiltonian in the k-space by reducing the N*N Hamiltonian in the real space for them. It is discovered that the energy band shows an imaginary line gap. To describe these phenomena, we propose the theory of "non-Hermitian tearing", in which the tearability we define reveals a continuous phase transition at the exceptional point. The non-Hermitian tearing manifests in two forms -- separation of bulk state and decoupling of boundary state. In addition, we also explore the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model and the Qi-Wu-Zhang model under dissipation using the theory of non-Hermitian tearing. Our results provide a theoretical approach for exploring the controlling of non-Hermitian physics on topological quantum states.

The speed of sound in QCD matter at finite temperature and density is investigated within the Polyakov loop improved Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. The spinodal structure associated with the chiral first-order chiral phase transition is considered to describe the continuous variation of the speed of sound. The behaviors of the squared sound speed in different phases, including the stable, metastable and unstable phases, are derived. The relation between speed of sound and QCD phase transitions is systematically explored. In particular, the boundary of vanishing sound velocity is derived in the temperature-density phase diagram, and the region where the sound wave equation being broken is pointed out. We systematically investigate the speed of sound in QCD matter under different conditions in the grand canonical ensemble within the Polyakov loop improved Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (PNJL) model. The numerical results indicate that the dependence of speed of sound on parameters like temperature and chemical potential can be indicative of QCD phase transition. Some new features of speed of sound are discovered, for instance, the hierarchy of sound velocity for $u(d)$ and $s$ quark at low temperature with the increasing chemical potential and the squared sound velocity approaching to almost zero in the critical region. We also formulate the relations between differently defined sound velocity using the fundamental thermodynamic relations. Some conclusions derived are useful for hydrodynamics simulation and calculation of transport coefficient of bulk viscosity., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

This paper proposes AB-SAGA, a first-order distributed stochastic optimization method to minimize a finite-sum of smooth and strongly convex functions distributed over an arbitrary directed graph. AB-SAGA removes the uncertainty caused by the stochastic gradients using a node-level variance reduction and subsequently employs network-level gradient tracking to address the data dissimilarity across the nodes. Unlike existing methods that use the nonlinear push-sum correction to cancel the imbalance caused by the directed communication, the consensus updates in AB-SAGA are linear and uses both row and column stochastic weights. We show that for a constant step-size, AB-SAGA converges linearly to the global optimal. We quantify the directed nature of the underlying graph using an explicit directivity constant and characterize the regimes in which AB-SAGA achieves a linear speed-up over its centralized counterpart. Numerical experiments illustrate the convergence of AB-SAGA for strongly convex and nonconvex problems.

Decentralized optimization is a promising parallel computation paradigm for large-scale data analytics and machine learning problems defined over a network of nodes. This paper is concerned with decentralized non-convex composite problems with population or empirical risk. In particular, the networked nodes are tasked to find an approximate stationary point of the average of local, smooth, possibly non-convex risk functions plus a possibly non-differentiable extended valued convex regularizer. Under this general formulation, we propose the first provably efficient, stochastic proximal gradient framework, called ProxGT. Specifically, we construct and analyze several instances of ProxGT that are tailored respectively for different problem classes of interest. Remarkably, we show that the sample complexities of these instances are network topology-independent and achieve linear speedups compared to that of the corresponding centralized optimal methods implemented on a single node.

This paper considers decentralized stochastic optimization over a network of $n$ nodes, where each node possesses a smooth non-convex local cost function and the goal of the networked nodes is to find an $\epsilon$-accurate first-order stationary point of the sum of the local costs. We focus on an online setting, where each node accesses its local cost only by means of a stochastic first-order oracle that returns a noisy version of the exact gradient. In this context, we propose a novel single-loop decentralized hybrid variance-reduced stochastic gradient method, called GT-HSGD, that outperforms the existing approaches in terms of both the oracle complexity and practical implementation. The GT-HSGD algorithm implements specialized local hybrid stochastic gradient estimators that are fused over the network to track the global gradient. Remarkably, GT-HSGD achieves a network topology-independent oracle complexity of $O(n^{-1}\epsilon^{-3})$ when the required error tolerance $\epsilon$ is small enough, leading to a linear speedup with respect to the centralized optimal online variance-reduced approaches that operate on a single node. We study decentralized non-convex finite-sum minimization problems described over a network of nodes, where each node possesses a local batch of data samples. In this context, we analyze a single-timescale randomized incremental gradient method, called GT-SAGA. GT-SAGA is computationally efficient as it evaluates one component gradient per node per iteration and achieves provably fast and robust performance by leveraging node-level variance reduction and network-level gradient tracking. For general smooth non-convex problems, we show the almost sure and mean-squared convergence of GT-SAGA to a first-order stationary point and further describe regimes of practical significance where it outperforms the existing approaches and achieves a network topology-independent iteration complexity respectively. When the global function satisfies the Polyak-Lojaciewisz condition, we show that GT-SAGA exhibits linear convergence to an optimal solution in expectation and describe regimes of practical interest where the performance is network topology-independent and improves upon the existing methods. Decentralized optimization to minimize a finite sum of functions over a network of nodes has been a significant focus within control and signal processing research due to its natural relevance to optimal control and signal estimation problems. More recently, the emergence of sophisticated computing and large-scale data science needs have led to a resurgence of activity in this area. In this article, we discuss decentralized first-order gradient methods, which have found tremendous success in control, signal processing, and machine learning problems, where such methods, due to their simplicity, serve as the first method of choice for many complex inference and training tasks. In particular, we provide a general framework of decentralized first-order methods that is applicable to undirected and directed communication networks alike, and show that much of the existing work on optimization and consensus can be related explicitly to this framework. We further extend the discussion to decentralized stochastic first-order methods that rely on stochastic gradients at each node and describe how local variance reduction schemes, previously shown to have promise in the centralized settings, are able to improve the performance of decentralized methods when combined with what is known as gradient tracking. We motivate and demonstrate the effectiveness of the corresponding methods in the context of machine learning and signal processing problems that arise in decentralized environments.

This paper considers decentralized minimization of $N:=nm$ smooth non-convex cost functions equally divided over a directed network of $n$ nodes. Specifically, we describe a stochastic first-order gradient method, called GT-SARAH, that employs a SARAH-type variance reduction technique and gradient tracking (GT) to address the stochastic and decentralized nature of the problem. We show that GT-SARAH, with appropriate algorithmic parameters, finds an $\epsilon$-accurate first-order stationary point with $O\big(\max\big\{N^{\frac{1}{2}},n(1-\lambda)^{-2},n^{\frac{2}{3}}m^{\frac{1}{3}}(1-\lambda)^{-1}\big\}L\epsilon^{-2}\big)$ gradient complexity, where ${(1-\lambda)\in(0,1]}$ is the spectral gap of the network weight matrix and $L$ is the smoothness parameter of the cost functions. This gradient complexity outperforms that of the existing decentralized stochastic gradient methods. In particular, in a big-data regime such that ${n = O(N^{\frac{1}{2}}(1-\lambda)^{3})}$, this gradient complexity furthers reduces to ${O(N^{\frac{1}{2}}L\epsilon^{-2})}$, independent of the network topology, and matches that of the centralized near-optimal variance-reduced methods. Moreover, in this regime GT-SARAH achieves a non-asymptotic linear speedup, in that, the total number of gradient computations at each node is reduced by a factor of $1/n$ compared to the centralized near-optimal algorithms that perform all gradient computations at a single node. To the best of our knowledge, GT-SARAH is the first algorithm that achieves this property. In addition, we show that appropriate choices of local minibatch size balance the trade-offs between the gradient and communication complexity of GT-SARAH. In this paper, we propose Push-SAGA, a decentralized stochastic first-order method for finite-sum minimization over a directed network of nodes. Push-SAGA combines node-level variance reduction to remove the uncertainty caused by stochastic gradients, network-level gradient tracking to address the distributed nature of the data, and push-sum consensus to tackle the challenge of directed communication links. We show that Push-SAGA achieves linear convergence to the exact solution for smooth and strongly convex problems and is thus the first linearly-convergent stochastic algorithm over arbitrary strongly connected directed graphs. We also characterize the regimes in which Push-SAGA achieves a linear speed-up compared to its centralized counterpart and achieves a network-independent convergence rate. We illustrate the behavior and convergence properties of Push-SAGA with the help of numerical experiments on strongly convex and non-convex problems.

In this paper, we study decentralized online stochastic non-convex optimization over a network of nodes. Integrating a technique called gradient tracking in decentralized stochastic gradient descent, we show that the resulting algorithm, GT-DSGD, enjoys certain desirable characteristics towards minimizing a sum of smooth non-convex functions. In particular, for general smooth non-convex functions, we establish non-asymptotic characterizations of GT-DSGD and derive the conditions under which it achieves network-independent performances that match the centralized minibatch SGD. In contrast, the existing results suggest that GT-DSGD is always network-dependent and is therefore strictly worse than the centralized minibatch SGD. When the global non-convex function additionally satisfies the Polyak-Lojasiewics (PL) condition, we establish the linear convergence of GT-DSGD up to a steady-state error with appropriate constant step-sizes. Moreover, under stochastic approximation step-sizes, we establish, for the first time, the optimal global sublinear convergence rate on almost every sample path, in addition to the asymptotically optimal sublinear rate in expectation. Since strongly convex functions are a special case of the functions satisfying the PL condition, our results are not only immediately applicable but also improve the currently known best convergence rates and their dependence on problem parameters.

In this report, we study decentralized stochastic optimization to minimize a sum of smooth and strongly convex cost functions when the functions are distributed over a directed network of nodes. In contrast to the existing work, we use gradient tracking to improve certain aspects of the resulting algorithm. In particular, we propose the~\textbf{\texttt{S-ADDOPT}} algorithm that assumes a stochastic first-order oracle at each node and show that for a constant step-size~$\alpha$, each node converges linearly inside an error ball around the optimal solution, the size of which is controlled by~$\alpha$. For decaying step-sizes~$\mathcal{O}(1/k)$, we show that~\textbf{\texttt{S-ADDOPT}} reaches the exact solution sublinearly at~$\mathcal{O}(1/k)$ and its convergence is asymptotically network-independent. Thus the asymptotic behavior of~\textbf{\texttt{S-ADDOPT}} is comparable to the centralized stochastic gradient descent. Numerical experiments over both strongly convex and non-convex problems illustrate the convergence behavior and the performance comparison of the proposed algorithm.

Decentralized methods to solve finite-sum minimization problems are important in many signal processing and machine learning tasks where the data is distributed over a network of nodes and raw data sharing is not permitted due to privacy and/or resource constraints. In this article, we review decentralized stochastic first-order methods and provide a unified algorithmic framework that combines variance-reduction with gradient tracking to achieve both robust performance and fast convergence. We provide explicit theoretical guarantees of the corresponding methods when the objective functions are smooth and strongly-convex, and show their applicability to non-convex problems via numerical experiments. This paper describes a novel algorithmic framework to minimize a finite-sum of functions available over a network of nodes. The proposed framework, that we call~\GTVR, is stochastic and decentralized, and thus is particularly suitable for problems where large-scale, potentially private data, cannot be collected or processed at a centralized server. The \GTVR~framework leads to a family of algorithms with two key ingredients: (i) \textit{local variance reduction}, that enables estimating the local batch gradients from arbitrarily drawn samples of local data; and, (ii) \textit{global gradient tracking}, which fuses the gradient information across the nodes. Naturally, combining different variance reduction and gradient tracking techniques leads to different algorithms of interest with valuable practical tradeoffs and design considerations. Our focus in this paper is on two instantiations of the~$\GTVR$ framework, namely~\textbf{\texttt{GT-SAGA}} and~\textbf{\texttt{GT-SVRG}}, that, similar to their centralized counterparts (\SAGA~and~\SVRG), exhibit a compromise between space and time. We show that both~\textbf{\texttt{GT-SAGA}} and~\textbf{\texttt{GT-SVRG}} achieve accelerated linear convergence for smooth and strongly convex problems and further describe the regimes in which they achieve non-asymptotic, network-independent linear convergence rates that are faster with respect to the existing decentralized first-order schemes. Moreover, we show that both algorithms achieve a linear speedup in such regimes, in that, the total number of gradient computations required at each node is reduced by a factor of $1/n$, where $n$ is the number of nodes, compared to their centralized counterparts that process all data at a single node. Extensive simulations illustrate the convergence behavior of the corresponding algorithms.

Decentralized stochastic optimization has recently benefited from gradient tracking methods \cite{DSGT_Pu,DSGT_Xin} providing efficient solutions for large-scale empirical risk minimization problems. In Part I \cite{GT_SAGA} of this work, we develop \textbf{\texttt{GT-SAGA}} that is based on a decentralized implementation of SAGA \cite{SAGA} using gradient tracking and discuss regimes of practical interest where \textbf{\texttt{GT-SAGA}} outperforms existing decentralized approaches in terms of the total number of local gradient computations. In this paper, we describe \textbf{\texttt{GT-SVRG}} that develops a decentralized gradient tracking based implementation of SVRG \cite{SVRG}, another well-known variance-reduction technique. Decentralized solutions to finite-sum minimization are of significant importance in many signal processing, control, and machine learning applications. In such settings, the data is distributed over a network of arbitrarily-connected nodes and raw data sharing is prohibitive often due to communication or privacy constraints. In this article, we review decentralized stochastic first-order optimization methods and illustrate some recent improvements based on gradient tracking and variance reduction, focusing particularly on smooth and strongly-convex objective functions. We provide intuitive illustrations of the main technical ideas as well as applications of the algorithms in the context of decentralized training of machine learning models.

In this paper, we study distributed stochastic optimization to minimize a sum of smooth and strongly-convex local cost functions over a network of agents, communicating over a strongly-connected graph. Assuming that each agent has access to a stochastic first-order oracle ($\mathcal{SFO}$), we propose a novel distributed method, called $\mathcal{S}$-$\mathcal{AB}$, where each agent uses an auxiliary variable to asymptotically track the gradient of the global cost in expectation. The $\mathcal{S}$-$\mathcal{AB}$ algorithm employs row- and column-stochastic weights simultaneously to ensure both consensus and optimality. Since doubly-stochastic weights are not used, $\mathcal{S}$-$\mathcal{AB}$ is applicable to arbitrary strongly-connected graphs. We show that under a sufficiently small constant step-size, $\mathcal{S}$-$\mathcal{AB}$ converges linearly (in expected mean-square sense) to a neighborhood of the global minimizer. We present numerical simulations based on real-world data sets to illustrate the theoretical results.

In this letter, we introduce a distributed Nesterov method, termed as $\mathcal{ABN}$, that does not require doubly-stochastic weight matrices. Instead, the implementation is based on a simultaneous application of both row- and column-stochastic weights that makes this method applicable to arbitrary (strongly-connected) graphs. Since constructing column-stochastic weights needs additional information (the number of outgoing neighbors at each agent), not available in certain communication protocols, we derive a variation, termed as FROZEN, that only requires row-stochastic weights but at the expense of additional iterations for eigenvector learning. We numerically study these algorithms for various objective functions and network parameters and show that the proposed distributed Nesterov methods achieve acceleration compared to the current state-of-the-art methods for distributed optimization.

In this paper, we provide a distributed optimization algorithm, termed as TV-$\mathcal{AB}$, that minimizes a sum of convex functions over time-varying, random directed graphs. Contrary to the existing work, the algorithm we propose does not require eigenvector estimation to estimate the (non-$\mathbf{1}$) Perron eigenvector of a stochastic matrix. Instead, the proposed approach relies on a novel information mixing approach that exploits both row- and column-stochastic weights to achieve agreement towards the optimal solution when the underlying graph is directed. We show that TV-$\mathcal{AB}$ converges linearly to the optimal solution when the global objective is smooth and strongly-convex, and the underlying time-varying graphs exhibit bounded connectivity, i.e., a union of every $C$ consecutive graphs is strongly-connected. We derive the convergence results based on the stability analysis of a linear system of inequalities along with a matrix perturbation argument. Simulations confirm the findings in this paper.

We study distributed optimization to minimize a global objective that is a sum of smooth and strongly-convex local cost functions. Recently, several algorithms over undirected and directed graphs have been proposed that use a gradient tracking method to achieve linear convergence to the global minimizer. However, a connection between these different approaches has been unclear. In this paper, we first show that many of the existing first-order algorithms are in fact related with a simple state transformation, at the heart of which lies the $\mathcal{AB}$ algorithm. We then describe \textit{distributed heavy-ball}, denoted as $\mathcal{AB}m$, i.e., $\mathcal{AB}$ with momentum, that combines gradient tracking with a momentum term and uses nonidentical local step-sizes. By simultaneously implementing both row- and column-stochastic weights, $\mathcal{AB}m$ removes the conservatism in the related work due to doubly-stochastic weights or eigenvector estimation. $\mathcal{AB}m$ thus naturally leads to optimization and average-consensus over both undirected and directed graphs, casting a unifying framework over several well-known consensus algorithms over arbitrary strongly-connected graphs. We show that $\mathcal{AB}m$ has a global $R$-linear rate when the largest step-size is positive and sufficiently small. Following the standard practice in the heavy-ball literature, we numerically show that $\mathcal{AB}m$ achieves accelerated convergence especially when the objective function is ill-conditioned.

In this paper, we discuss distributed optimization over directed graphs, where doubly-stochastic weights cannot be constructed. Most of the existing algorithms overcome this issue by applying push-sum consensus, which utilizes column-stochastic weights. The formulation of column-stochastic weights requires each agent to know (at least) its out-degree, which may be impractical in e.g., broadcast-based communication protocols. In contrast, we describe FROST (Fast Row-stochastic-Optimization with uncoordinated STep-sizes), an optimization algorithm applicable to directed graphs that does not require the knowledge of out-degrees; the implementation of which is straightforward as each agent locally assigns weights to the incoming information and locally chooses a suitable step-size. We show that FROST converges linearly to the optimal solution for smooth and strongly-convex functions given that the largest step-size is positive and sufficiently small., Comment: Submitted for journal publication, currently under review

In this letter, we study distributed optimization, where a network of agents, abstracted as a directed graph, collaborates to minimize the average of locally-known convex functions. Most of the existing approaches over directed graphs are based on push-sum (type) techniques, which use an independent algorithm to asymptotically learn either the left or right eigenvector of the underlying weight matrices. This strategy causes additional computation, communication, and nonlinearity in the algorithm. In contrast, we propose a linear algorithm based on an inexact gradient method and a gradient estimation technique. Under the assumptions that each local function is strongly-convex with Lipschitz-continuous gradients, we show that the proposed algorithm geometrically converges to the global minimizer with a sufficiently small step-size. We present simulations to illustrate the theoretical findings.

We propose Directed-Distributed Projected Subgradient (D-DPS) to solve a constrained optimization problem over a multi-agent network, where the goal of agents is to collectively minimize the sum of locally known convex functions. Each agent in the network owns only its local objective function, constrained to a commonly known convex set. We focus on the circumstance when communications between agents are described by a \emph{directed} network. The D-DPS combines surplus consensus to overcome the asymmetry caused by the directed communication network. Position-sensitive-detectors (PSDs) based on lateral photoeffect has been widely used in diverse applications, including optical engineering, aerospace and military fields. With increasing demand in long distance, low energy consumption, and weak signal sensing systems, the poor responsivity of conventional PSDs has become a bottleneck limiting its applications. Herein, we present a high performance graphene based PSDs with revolutionary interfacial amplification mechanism. Signal amplification in the order of ~10^4 has been demonstrated by utilizing the ultrahigh mobility of graphene and long lifetime of photo-induced carriers at the interface of SiO2/Si. This would improve the detection limit of Si-based PSDs from uW to nW level, without sacrificing the spatial resolution and response speed. This paper considers a distributed optimization problem over a multi-agent network, in which the objective function is a sum of individual cost functions at the agents. We focus on the case when communication between the agents is described by a \emph{directed} graph. Existing distributed optimization algorithms for directed graphs require at least the knowledge of the neighbors' out-degree at each agent (due to the requirement of column-stochastic matrices). In contrast, our algorithm requires no such knowledge. Moreover, the proposed algorithm achieves the best known rate of convergence for this class of problems, $O(\mu^k)$ for $0<\mu<1$, where $k$ is the number of iterations, given that the objective functions are strongly-convex and have Lipschitz-continuous gradients. In this paper, we consider distributed optimization problems where the goal is to minimize a sum of objective functions over a multi-agent network. We focus on the case when the inter-agent communication is described by a strongly-connected, \emph{directed} graph. The proposed algorithm, ADD-OPT (Accelerated Distributed Directed Optimization), achieves the best known convergence rate for this class of problems,~$O(\mu^{k}),0<\mu<1$, given strongly-convex, objective functions with globally Lipschitz-continuous gradients, where~$k$ is the number of iterations. Moreover, ADD-OPT supports a wider and more realistic range of step-sizes in contrast to existing work. In particular, we show that ADD-OPT converges for arbitrarily small (positive) step-sizes. Simulations further illustrate our results.

SuperNEMO is a next generation neutrinoless double beta decay experiment with a design capability to reach a half-life sensitivity of $10^{26}$ years corresponding to an effective Majorana neutrino mass of $\langle m_{\beta\beta} \rangle$ $<$ 50 - 100 meV. To achieve this sensitivity, stringent radio-purity requirements are imposed resulting in an equally stringent screening programme. Dedicated facilities have been established in the UK for screening and selection of detector construction materials. Gamma ray spectroscopy using high-purity germanium (HPGe) detectors has been the standard method for the measurement of material contamination. A low-background facility has been established at Boulby Underground Laboratory. The first results from the 2 current HPGe detector are shown. Radon is one of the most critical backgrounds for SuperNEMO and most other low background experiments. It can enter the detector either through diffusion, contamination during construction or emanation from the detector materials resulting in radioactive daughter isotopes. To reach the target sensitivity, the $^{222}$Rn concentration inside the SuperNEMO tracker volume must be less than 150 $\mu$Bq/m3. A "Radon Concentration Line" (RnCL) was developed to be used in conjunction with a state-of-the-art radon detector to make a more sensitive measurement of large gas volumes. This apparatus has now been commissioned and is capable of measuring radon levels in large samples down to 10 $\mu$Bq/m3. The results from first measurements of radon content using the RnCL are presented. Correlation between nodes is found to be a common and important property in many complex networks. Here we investigate degree correlations of the Barabasi-Albert (BA) Scale-Free model with both analytical results and simulations, and find two neighboring regions, a disassortative one for low degrees and a neutral one for high degrees. The average degree of the neighbors of a randomly picked node is expected to diverge in the limit of infinite network size. As an generalization of the concept of correlation, we also study the correlations of other scalar properties, including age and clustering coefficient. Finally we propose a correlation measurement in bipartite networks.

In network evolution, the effect of aging is universal: in scientific collaboration network, scientists have a finite time span of being active; in movie actors network, once popular stars are retiring from stage; devices on the Internet may become outmoded with techniques developing so rapidly. Here we find in citation networks that this effect can be represented by an exponential decay factor, $e^{-\beta \tau}$, where $\tau $ is the node age, while other evolving networks (the Internet for instance) may have different types of aging, for example, a power-law decay factor, which is also studied and compared. It has been found that as soon as such a factor is introduced to the Barabasi-Albert Scale-Free model, the network will be significantly transformed. The network will be clustered even with infinitely large size, and the clustering coefficient varies greatly with the intensity of the aging effect, i.e. it increases linearly with $\beta $ for small values of $\beta $ and decays exponentially for large values of $\beta $. At the same time, the aging effect may also result in a hierarchical structure and a disassortative degree-degree correlation. Generally the aging effect will increase the average distance between nodes, but the result depends on the type of the decay factor. The network appears like a one-dimensional chain when exponential decay is chosen, but with power-law decay, a transformation process is observed, i.e., from a small-world network to a hypercubic lattice, and to a one-dimensional chain finally. The disparities observed for different choices of the decay factor, in clustering, average node distance and probably other aspects not yet identified, are believed to bear significant meaning on empirical data acquisition., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures,V2, accepted for publication in Phys.
