The MEG II experiment, based at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland, reports the result of a search for the decay $\mu^+\to e^+\gamma$ from data taken in the first physics run in 2021. No excess of events over the expected background is observed, yielding an upper limit on the branching ratio of B($\mu^+\to e^+\gamma$) < $7.5 \times 10^{-13}$ (90% C.L.). The combination of this result and the limit obtained by MEG gives B($\mu^+\to e^+\gamma$) < $3.1 \times 10^{-13}$ (90% C.L.), which is the most stringent limit to date. A ten-fold larger sample of data is being collected during the years 2022-2023, and data-taking will continue in the coming years., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures. To be published in EPJC

The MEG II experiment, located at the Paul Scherrer Institut (PSI) in Switzerland, is the successor to the MEG experiment, which completed data taking in 2013. MEG II started fully operational data taking in 2021, with the goal of improving the sensitivity of the mu+ -> e+ gamma decay down to 6e-14 almost an order of magnitude better than the current limit. This paper discusses the effects of radiation damage to SiPMs on the performances of plastic scintillator counters with series-connected SiPM readout, focusing on timing measurements. The performances of a counter composed of a $120 \times 40 \times5~\mathrm{mm}^3$ scintillator tile read out by two sets of six SiPMs from AdvanSiD connected in series attached on the short sides are presented, for different combinations of SiPMs at various levels of irradiation. Firstly, six SiPMs were equally irradiated with electrons from $^{90}$Sr sources up to a fluence of $\Phi_\mathrm{e^-}\approx 3 \times 10^{12}~\mathrm{cm}^{-2}$. The timing resolution of the counter gradually deteriorated by the increase in dark current. The dark current and the deterioration were reduced when the counter was cooled from 30$^\circ$C to 10$^\circ$C. Secondly, 33 SiPMs were irradiated with reactor neutrons. The characteristics of counters read out by series-connected SiPMs with non-uniform damage levels, were investigated. We present the first direct search for lepton flavour violating muon decay mediated by a new light particle X, $\mu^+ \to \mathrm{e}^+\mathrm{X}, \mathrm{X} \to \gamma\gamma$. This search uses a dataset resulting from $7.5\times 10^{14}$ stopped muons collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul Scherrer Institut in the period 2009--2013. No significant excess is found in the mass region 20--45 MeV/c$^2$ for lifetimes below 40 ps, and we set the most stringent branching ratio upper limits in the mass region of 20--40 MeV/c$^2$, down to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-11})$ at 90\% confidence level.

We have developed a new laser-based time calibration system for highly segmented scintillator counters like the MEG II pixelated Timing Counter (pTC), consisting of 512-centimeter scale scintillator counters read out by silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs). It is difficult to apply previous laser-based calibration methods for conventional meter-scale Time-Of-Flight detectors to the MEG II pTC from the implementation and the accuracy points of view. This paper presents a new laser-based time calibration system which can overcome such difficulties. A laser pulse is split into each scintillator counter via several optical components so that we can directly measure the time offset of each counter relative to the laser-emitted time. We carefully tested all the components and procedures prior to the actual operation. The laser system was installed into the pTC and thoroughly tested under the real experimental condition. The system showed good stability and being sensitive to any change of timing larger than ~10 ps. Moreover, it showed an uncertainty of 48 ps in the determination of the time offsets, which meets our requirements. The new method provides an example of the implementation of a precise timing alignment for the new type of detectors enabled by the advance of SiPM technology., Comment: 11 pages, 17 figures

Following the early prediction of the skyrmion lattice (SkL) - a periodic array of spin vortices - it has been observed recently in various magnetic crystals mostly with chiral structure. Although non-chiral but polar crystals with C$_{nv}$ symmetry were identifed as ideal SkL hosts in pioneering theoretical studies this archetype of SkL has remained experimentally unexplored. Here, we report the discovery of a SkL in the polar magnetic semiconductor GaV$_4$S$_8$ with rhombohedral (C$_{3v}$) symmetry and easy axis anisotropy. The SkL exists over an unusually broad temperature range compared with other bulk crystals and the orientation of the vortices is not controlled by the external magnetic feld but instead confned to the magnetic easy axis. Supporting theory attributes these unique features to a new non-chiral or N\'eel-type of SkL describable as a superposition of spin cycloids in contrast to the Bloch-type SkL in chiral magnets described in terms of spin helices.

The history of recovery of meteorite fragments in the Yamato Mountains, Allan Hills, and Victoria Land, Antarctica is reviewed. The Japanese collection of Antarctic meteorites were numbered, weighed, photographed, identified, and classified. Sample distribution of the Japanese Antarctic meteorites is described.

Thus far, organic analysis of carbonaceous chondrites has proven the only fruitful means of examining complex organic matter of extraterrestrial origin. The present paper presents the results of organic analysis of two Antarctic meteorites, Allan Hills (77306) and Yamato (74662), which may be considered free from terrestrial contamination. Ion-exchange chromatography, gas chromatography and mass spectrometery of meteorite samples reveal the presence in Yamato of 15 and in Allan Hills of 20 protein and nonprotein amino acids, the most abundant of which are glycine and alanine. Abundances of the D and L enantiomers of each amino acid are also found to be nearly equal. Data thus indicate an abiotic extraterrestrial origin for the matter, and confirm a lack of terrestrial contamination.

Evidence for the presence of amino acids of extraterrestrial origin in the Antarctic Yamato carbonaceous chrondrite is presented. Hydrolyzed and nonhydrolyzed water-extracted amino acid samples from exterior, middle and interior portions of the meteorite were analyzed by an amino acid analyzer and by gas chromatography of N-TFA-isopropyl amino acid derivatives. Nine protein and six nonprotein amino acids were detected in the meteorite at abundances between 34 and less than one nmole/g, with equal amounts in interior and exterior portions. Nearly equal abundances of the D and L enantiomers of alanine, aspartic acid and glutamic acid were found, indicating the abiotic, therefore extraterrestrial, origin of the amino acids. The Antarctic environment and the uniformity of protein amino acid abundances are discussed as evidence against the racemization of terrestrially acquired amino acids, and similarities between Yamato amino acid compositions and the amino acid compositions of the Murchison and Murray type II carbonaceous chrondrites are indicated.

Total carbon and sulfur abundances have been measured in five Antarctic meteorites. Two C2 carbonaceous chondrites Yamato 74662 and Allan Hills 77306 have sulfur abundances (3.490 plus or minus .040% and 3.863 plus or minus 0.050% respectively) similar to other C2 chondrites but their carbon abundances (1.514 plus or minus 0.050% and 1.324 plus or minus .040% respectively) are lower than previously measured C2 chondrites. The decreased carbon abundances may reflect the effects of weathering in cold environments. Carbon and sulfur abundances for one C4 carbonaceous chondrite, one E4 enstatite chondrite and one ureilite are similar to values reported previously for meteorites of the same petrologic grades.

A cube-like fragment with an approximately 4 mm edge was taken from the Yamato-74659 meteorite for the mineralogical and crystallographic examination discussed in the present paper. An analysis of powdered fragments by a standard wet chemical method showed that it matched to weathered ureilite. The chemical composition was found to differ from other ureilites in that the FeO content (8.83 wt%) is the lowest among known ureilites and it is richer in SiO2 contents (42.91 wt%).
